Happy 90th, Theatre-By-the-Sea!
90 years ago today (August 7, 1933), a charming if unremarkable summer stock theatre opened its doors right next to the beach in Matunuck, Rhode Island. In and of itself, I don’t know that I’ve ever have marked the date, there being probably hundreds of similar little small town resort theatres around the country — BUT for the fact that it’s located in my hometown and I worked there one summer…

Lula brings spotlight onto Gaza crisis during Celac speech
Tumblr media
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva Friday brought before the United Nations a proposal from the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) to end “the genocide” in the Gaza Strip. During his speech at the 8th Celac Summit in Kingstown (St Vincent and the Grenadines), the South American leader also referred to the situation in the Middle East as a “carnage.”
“The humanitarian tragedy in Gaza requires from all of us the ability to say enough is enough to the collective punishment that the Israeli government is imposing on the Palestinian people. People are dying in the queue for food. The indifference of the international community is shocking. I want to take advantage of the presence of the UN Secretary-General, my comrade António Guterres, to propose a motion from Celac for an immediate end to this genocide,” said Lula.
Lula suggested Guterres invoke Article 99 of the UN Charter, which gives him the power to draw the attention of the UN Security Council to any matter that could threaten international peace and security. The President also called on China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, to put aside their differences and “put an end to this killing spree.”
The South American leader also urged Japan, who took over the rotating presidency of the Security Council on Friday, to “take up the issue urgently” and put an end to the “carnage” taking place in the Middle East. “There have already been more than 30,000 deaths. The lives of thousands of innocent women and children are at stake. The lives of Hamas hostages are also at stake. I want to end by telling you that our dignity and humanity are at stake. That's why we need to stop the carnage in the name of the survival of humanity, which needs a lot of humanism.”

Glitter and Darkness [Chapter 1]
Looking at the screen of my phone reminded me of how pathetic I must be as my current account balance flashed a miserable 16$. With a sigh, I quickly made my way towards the audition for an anti-fungal foot cream ad! I know it isn’t glamorous but I couldn’t afford to be picky right now… Entering the audition room, I noticed there were just a handful of people; I guess not many wanted their face to be associated with fungal feet. Well I guess that makes less competition for me!
Three people were up before me so I had to wait for my turn backstage. I was seated next to a girl who was really engrossed with her phone. Looking for a means to pass time, I decided to glance one more time at the script that was provided to me. Soon enough it was turn and I nervously made my way to the stage. Two bored-looking judges were seated in front of the stage and motioned for me to go on. After performing my part they nodded and one replied in a flat tone “thanks that will be all! We’ll let you know later if you’re selected for the ad”. With a curt nod I quietly made my way to the waiting room and joined the previous contestants. While waiting for the others to finish their auditions, I decided to whip out my phone and scroll on social media. Around 30 minutes later I heard the judges calling everyone back on stage. Unfortunately for me I couldn’t get the role.
I made my way back home with a dejected expression as I thought of how I could raise money. I had no family to rely on as my mother passed out 5 years ago and my dad is pretty much a stranger since my birth. The only thing I got was this single cramped room where I used to live with my late mom situated in the slums of Kingstown. Plopping myself on the bed, I did more social media scrolling in quest of job announcements while eating the instant noodles I bought on my way back.
The evening was pretty uneventful until my phone started glitching then the background turned completely red and a strange message written in black appeared on the screen:
“Congratulations Milena Barns, Your Potential has been noticed
Welcome to your next stage!”
Thinking it’s just a malfunction; I decide to restart her phone and breathes a sigh of relief when I see my phone returned back to normal. Dismissing my worries, I decide to resume my job hunting search but quickly stumble on a trending news report featuring a familiar young girl of around my age lying in the pool of her own blood. With a closer look on the photo, I was mortified when I recognize the girl that I met backstage earlier!! Then my phone glitched again like before and another message appears
“Don’t make the same mistake like she did; you have been chosen!”
Few seconds later the message disappears without leaving any trace. I was filled horror and fear as I pondered about what I just got into. Maybe it is a prank but I find it hard to believe myself. Then I thought of reporting this to the police but there are no traces of the messages! Moreover I had this strange feeling of being observed; I quickly look around but found no one! Sitting and hugging my knees on the bed, I replayed the messages in my head until I noticed the early rays of the sun at the horizon. Then again, another message appears bearing instructions this time:
“The initiation will take place at the gate found in the south border of the town at 10pm prompt
Failure to be there on time will be a huge mistake!”

Composition wise, the Seventh Rhode Island differed from the other units Rhode Island sent to the Rebellion.
It was composed largely of men from southern and western Rhode Island, most of whom were farmers and mill workers, whose average age was 21.
Company G of the Seventh was recruited in South Kingstown.
Tragically one in three Company G men died serving in the war, an absolutely horrible record.
One of them was this man, Charles W. Gardiner. He was nineteen and a farmer from South Kingstown when he joined up on August 20, 1862.
Like so many members of the Seventh he got sick in Mississippi, and died of typhoid on August 24, 1863 at Cincinnati. Fortunately his remains were brought home and buried in the Usquepaugh Cemetery.
His epitaph includes this poem:
Time hath not the power to bear away, Thine image from the heart; No scenes that mark life's onward way, Can bid it hence depart. Yet while our souls with anguish ridden, Mourn dearest one for thee, We raise our tearful eyes to heaven, When our dark path appears. Tis sweet to know, thou canst not share, Our anguish and our tears, For thou has gained a brighter land, And death's cold stream is past.

The Farmer's Daughter in South County, Rhode Island
Here's some of the cute little "stores" and displays at this South Kingstown perfect fall destination. It is Autumn in New England, for sure!
The Witch's House with "notions, potions, devotions, herbarium, apothescary." It was a little creepy but also cute and kitschy. That green figure in the little garden was sufficient scary.
And the other little rooms of things for sale, especially the Halloween room, was really fun to look around.
I loved, of course, the growing flowers. Those will be in my next post. 🙂

A Glimpse into the Whimsical World of Local Artist David Bird
Tumblr media
In one photograph, the woodland creature Ryder dances joyfully under a flower. In another, Go Go hitches a ride on a mouse. A third depicts Silas splashing in a pool of water alongside a sparrow.  The characters, called Becorns, are the creation of South Kingstown artist David Bird. He builds the figurines out of sticks, […]
