Hmmm I really need to get some acoustic panelling (maybe some bass traps) for the office. I'm listening to music over my speakers in here right now and between how empty of a room it is at the moment (the only things in here are my desk, PC, guitars, and amp) and the barren walls, sound waves have a lot of long flat surfaces to reflect across. It makes the bass sound a lot boomier than it would otherwise, and the middle treble frequencies get a bit lost. The sound will improve once we put Cate's desk and a futon and some other furniture in here, but it still might be a bit too boomy.
Remember kids, one of the biggest contributors to an enjoyable audio experience is proper room treatment. At the very least, do your listening in a room that has lots of varied and soft surfaces which will absorb sound waves rather than reflect them. Bookshelves stuffed full of books and soft furniture like a couch work almost as well as acoustic panelling. The trick is to avoid large patches of flat, hard surface.
Honestly, I don't know how my old roommate was able to stand listening to anything in here with the way he had the room set up, and he always listened to music.

Seven on the button, and the doorbell rings. I hear it from the garden as I empty the contents on the lawn mower into the bin, grass stains on my new shoes, sweat on my brow. Dad comes to the back door.
“Bell,” he says.
“Is it someone for me?”
“I assume so. A young woman.”
“Didn’t you let her in?”
“No. I spotted her from my office window.”
I scoff. He’s so weird. Why wouldn’t he just answer? I wipe the grass from my hands onto the sides of my shorts, kick my dirty shoes off on the patio, and head down the hallway to the sounds of Ivy plonking on the piano.
It’s Evie, in her usual denim shorts and a thin green cardigan, hair straight and shiny and wearing a shy smile. Despite seeming slightly frazzled, she looks so nice, like she’s put in effort, unlike me, all grass stains, sweat, and hair that is no doubt sticking up at some wild angle. I run my fingers through it.
“Oh, hi,” I say. “I didn’t think you’d come so early. I… still have to shower.”
“Oh, God, sorry, am I the first one here?”
“Yeah, but come in, anyway. My sister is just practising for her piano lessons. She hasn’t played all summer.” I roll my eyes as the door clicks behind us. “In case you can’t tell. She’s a bit shite.”
Evie doesn’t respond, but looks around her with those big green eyes taking in her surroundings, skating up the panelled walls to the Georgian coving, the ceiling roses around the lights, all restored, faithful to the original house. It occurs to me to wonder, for the first time, what her home looks like, and the differences between our upbringings that didn’t matter an ounce on our little escapist slice of the beach.
“Do you want tea or something?”
She nods, and I take her through to the kitchen. There, she perches on a stool at the island and rests her elbows, trying not to be so obvious to her gawking. This time, she takes in the kitchen, this bespoke, perfect show-house-like kitchen with all of its integrated appliances, the state-of-the-art hob that’s barely used, the skinny cupboard made specifically for all the herbs and spices that still have the plastic wrap on them. It’s nice, sure, it’s like something from a magazine, but I would prefer this was the type of house that had magnets on the fridge door instead.
“I’m sorry I’m early,” Evie says with a rueful smile. “I thought you said seven.”
I drop a tea bag into a mug for her. “Yeah, I said seven in the text, but I suppose I should have been more specific.”
“More specific about…?”
“That seven doesn’t actually mean seven, you know? That it means, like, sometime after eight.”
“Oh, sorry. I didn’t know you expected me to decode your text.”
I laugh. The misunderstanding was my fault, really, and if I’d thought about it for even a minute, I would have known that Evie, a girl who likely doesn’t go to a lot of parties, wouldn’t know the procedure. I don’t mind that she’s here at all. I am happy to see her, but the fact that she is in my house at the same time as my family is awkward. Every time I hear someone moving about in another room, all my muscles tense up. I cannot bear for her to meet them, and be able to make some kind of judgement about who I truly am through the encounter, or worse, expose herself to their judgement and scrutiny.
As though on cue, my mother’s heels clack through the hallway, increasing in volume until all I can do is mentally prepare myself for her entrance. I curse under my breath while I fill Evie’s cup with boiling water.
In freshly pressed trousers, she strides into the room. All jangling keys, and an air of busyness about her, so self-absorbed that it takes a moment for her to realise we have a guest. She stops dead, and surveys Evie in dull surprise. She’s like some kind of wild, feline predator, and witnessing her interactions with people who don’t yet know her ways is excruciating.
“Oh, hello.”
“Mom, this is my friend Evie. Evie, this is my mom,” I say.
Evie fidgets in her seat. “Hello missus Turner,” she says, and it’s so polite that I squirm.
Mom lets out a short, percussive laugh. “Oh, no, darling. It’s just Colette. Are you one of those girls from the Holy Faith school?”
“No, actually, I’m not. I’m from Tullamore, in Offaly.”
Mom’s eyes glaze over so immediately and obviously that I cringe.
Pulling the tea bag out, I clarify, “She’s one of my friends from holiday.”
“Ah, Shane’s sister.”
Evie picks the mug from the counter and cradles it in her hands. “No, um… No, I’m not.”
“Ah.” She’s already rifling through her handbag. “Jude, have you seen my reading glasses? I haven’t been able to find them all afternoon.”
“Did you check the office?”
“Why would they be in there?”
“I’m just asking, did you check?”
She huffs. “Why would you suggest the office? Why on earth would I have left them there?”
“Because this is your house, and you can go into any of the rooms you like. Sorry if that’s an outrageous suggestion.”
“You know I’m never in there.”
“Well, maybe dad mistook them for his and took them in. I don’t know.”
Evie stares into her mug. I am aware of the atmosphere we’re generating here, my mom and I, but it’s hard not to descend into this childish bickering every time we speak to each other lately. Even seeing her ignites this rage in me, as she is a reminder of the injustices thrust upon me, and every time I see her smug face, I think about the position she has put me in. Dad too, obviously, but I mercifully don’t have to see him outside of occasional mealtimes, and whenever someone makes a noise that disturbs him.
Eventually, mom struts out of the room and flings open the door to the living room, curtly calling on Ivy to get ready to leave, and I thank God. I won’t relax until they do.
“How’s your tea?” I ask Evie, and she responds with a grateful smile. “It’s lovely, thank you.” I know she’s lying. I don’t know how the nuances of creating drinks I don’t enjoy. There are rules about the correct amount of milk, and how long to brew the tea bag. Maybe I shouldn’t have bashed it around in the cup with such vigour, as though transferring some of my contaminated energy into it. I wonder if she can taste it.
“That’s good,” I say, and we lapse into a long silence.

𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘩𝘺 𝘔𝘢𝘺 𝘋𝘢𝘺 𝘛𝘦𝘯: 𝘘𝘶𝘪𝘦𝘵 𝘕𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴
Rating: G Pairing: Mountain/Aether with brief appearances by Dew and Rain. Words: 750ish Using this one as an excuse to talk about the abbey library (since I wrote this while at the library it seems fitting). Mushy May brought to you by @forlorn-crows Divider by @ghuleh-recs
Aether loves the library after dark. When it’s been deserted by the day staff. Lights turned low. Doors left closed, but unlocked. He lets himself in after long shifts at the infirmary and wanders the stacks. It’s a way to decompress. Not that there is that much stress at the infirmary these days. Mostly he deals with colds, flus, sprains, stitches, the occasional baby. There was a time when trauma seemed to live in those walls. Where he would go in knowing he’d come home bloody.
But lately, things have calmed down. Evened out. He likes it. He likes the abbey quiet and stable. He knows it won’t last forever–can’t. That something will happen, another power shift, and the whole place will turn itself upside down again.
He’ll haunt the library then too.
He walks the whole library before he even thinks about a book. Weaving in between the tall shelves. Climbing the narrow stairs to the fiction section, lofted above stacks and stacks and stacks of history texts and dusty books about summonings.
He looks down over the library, it’s dark wood, and vaulted ceilings, and plush victorian era couches. He turns and plunges deeper into the stacks. Dragging his fingers over the spines of new fantasy books preferred by Rain, and the romances Cumulus and Sunshine read voraciously. He browses Dew’s horror section–in case there’s something new he should bring home to the fire ghoul. Glances at the young adult section that Aurora has devoured since she got here.
He snags a historical fiction for himself, and presses onward into the darkness. There’s a nook, Dew found it years ago, tucked away behind this section. A set of winding stairs hidden behind a wall panel. Aether touches two fingers to the section of wall and it clicks, and pops out, swinging on invisible hinges.
He steps into the stairwell and tugs it closed behind him. There’s light coming from above. The faint glow of the fairy lights he and Cirrus hung right after Dew found this spot. He follows that glow up the steep stairs and emerges into a small comfortable room. More of an attic than anything else–but transformed into something cozy. There’s a big window in the gable, flooding the room with moonlight. It’s warm and quiet, and not empty.
Mountain’s seated on one of the many floor pillows. A blanket curled up around his shoulders, back to the wall, horns just barely brushing the peaked ceiling. He’s fully absorbed in a book that Aether recognizes as one of Rain’s favorites. Not a usual pick for the earth ghoul.
Mountain looks up at him as Aether gets closer. He smiles, it’s warm and sleepy. He pats the pillow next to him.
“Did you just get off work?”
Aether nods, dropping down next to Mountain. Shifting so their thighs touch from hip to knee.
“What are you doing up?” Aether leans his head into Mountain’s shoulder. Mountain reaches up and scratches his fingers through Aether’s hair. Soothing fingers rubbing soft circles above his ear.
“Didn’t realize what time it was–got caught up.”
“Thought you didn’t like fiction.”
Mountain huffs out a little laugh. “Yeah, guess I was wrong. Rain has good taste.”
“He does,” Aether agrees. Settling in, he grabs a blanket of his own and opens his book. One he’s been meaning to read for a while. “You hanging out for a while?”
Aether doesn’t mind being here alone, but sometimes–especially tonight–the company sounds nice. Mountain’s ground presence sets him at ease like nothing else, he wants to drown in it.
Mountain nods. “Got 100 pages left–I need to finish it. And then there’s the sequel.” Mountain holds up another thick paperback.
Aether smiles, he leans his head a little deeper into Mountain’s shoulder and cracks his book. They fall into companionable silence, soft breathing turning into subtle purrs as the night wears on and the moon sets.
In the morning, when Dew comes looking for them–he finds them curled up together. Books drooping from their hands. Covered in the same blanket, heads tilted together. The room filled with soft snores. He takes a picture before he retreats. Sending it to Rain who’s out searching the greenhouse for signs of Mountain.
Found them he sends with the picture.
Adorable Rain responds seconds later.
Dew smiles at the sleeping ghouls in front of them, then turns away. He pads quietly down the stairs and closes the door softly behind him, and goes to finish making breakfast. They’ll emerge when they’re ready–but until then, Dew is more than happy to let them rest–they deserve it.

I made a horrifying symbiote AU where my shapeshifter OC, Raven, gets caught mid shift by Widow, a symbiote, and I'm the process they both absorbed Peter and made a terrifying amalgamation :)!! And then Harley has to find them like this and he and Stephen have to figure out a way to fix it :))

Harley couldn't believe he was doing this.
The old Hydra base was completely run down, crumbling beneath itself. Hazard signs and sharp fences were put all around it, like some sort of nuclear fallout plot.
Something was in here that Hydra didn't want them to see.
But this is where his siblings disappeared to. Everyone told him Hydra killed them. That they were killed in the midst of Armageddon by Schneider and his horrid organization of criminals. Of sick and twisted beings.
Nat had said they dissapeared one day, never coming back home. It was Hydra, Harley had found out.
Now here he stands, face to face with the building that apparently was his siblings' tomb.
Wish a deep, shaky breath in, he began to walk into the crumbled building, flashlight gripped tightly in his hand.
Traveling through the beginning of the Hydra base, he didn't find much else other than the broken down walls and shattered glass of the facility. Occasionally he'd find traces of an odd substance, purple, and almost gel-like, though he dare not touch it himself.
Soon, he reached a large, open room, with machinery and equipment everywhere. Some broken off from the ceiling, leaving dead wires dangling down. Others, large computers and control panels, smashed to pieces and torn apart.
The floor was covered with a smelly, black sludge, the same purple gel, and lots and lots of dried blood.
Harley's stomach churned. The only beast large enough to do this that he could think of Hydra getting their hands on was Raven, if she was made very, ::very:: angry.
Something deep down inside of him was trying to tell him that she was already gone. That all of this is just a lost cause. But he pushed past it, because he had to. Because he still felt like they were still out there...
The farther he traveled, the more the building became destroyed, to the point where he was having to climb over rubble, ducking and squeezing through tight cracks just to continue.
His mind was ***screaming*** for him to turn back, but he couldn't stop now.
He made his way through a thick wall of rubble, only to be met with the very distinct smell of rotten flesh that almost made him throw up there on the spot.
He gagged, pulling the mask he had brought with him up over his face, before continuing. What in the *world* could be the source of that smell??
As he looked around, shining his flashlight over the floor, he got his answer, jumping back at the sight of it.
What had to be at least ten Hydra guards lay on the floor in front of him, flies and maggots crawling all over their bodies, now rotting away after being left for too long, hollowed out sockets and rotten eyes staring back at him.
Harley turned, most definitely going to be sick. He had to turn around--- *he had too*. This was too much. Too dangerous.
Taking one last glance, he noticed a number of the bodies had massive chunks taken out of them, wounds only teeth from a massive monster could cause. Something had been *eating them.*
His previous hypothesis as to who that "beast" could have been flashes in his mind, and he fights down more bile, quickly turning away and beginning to try to escape.
But that's when he heard the breathing.
A deep, shuddering sound. Rattling around in massive, laboured lungs.
Harley froze, before swallowing and turning around, despite what his muscles were *screaming* for him to do. He's seen enough horror movies-- this is the part where you *run.*
But God, he was so curious-- ***what if it was her?***
He shone his flashlight around, until suddenly his light landed on something that looked like eyes. He jumped, almost dropping the flashlight.
He began to back up, eyes never leaving the hollow, *human* eye looking back at him, towering above him in an impossible hight.
Surrounding the eye was the same purple substance, forming a body around it. As his shaking light went over the thing's body, he noticed at least one arm sticking out of the thing, which was mostly a pile of sludge.
The thing's mouth hung open, gaping jaws filled with sharp, canid teeth, as well as human teeth stretched into the skin around, in unnatural and uncomfortable looking positions.
Then, it *moved.*
It pulled itself towards him, the breathing echoing in his ears. As it moved, a sickening, squelching sound reverberated around the room, as it's body morphed and changed to grow more limbs.
He had to get out of there.
He quickly turned and began running, hearing the thing screech in protest as he did. Heart thundering in his chest, he scrambled for the wall of rubble, squeezing back through it as fast as he could.
Just before he got out, his jacket got stuck, trapping him in the rubble. He could hear the squelching of the thing getting closer, as tears began to form he pulled at the jacket, frankly not caring if it tore.
And then, a weak, haunting voice echoed throughout the room, one that froze Harley's blood solid.
"H...ar...l.e...y?"
It knew his name.
***How did it know his name???***
He pulled free finally, and began backing away, gasping for air as he did. He looked around, as the sound processed more in his brain.
Why did that seem so familiar. Why was the voice so familiar????
Eyes widening in horror, he quickly began to realize what was happening.
That mutant abomination---that. Amalgamation of parts and pieces, an alien of mutation---

“We’re just going in and out, got it?” Miles Morales of Earth-1610 tells him. “C’mon, are you even listening, man?”
He’s not listening. His eyes are fixed on the portal that appeared in front of him, watching it distort and spin with a burning intensity. If the place they’re headed to can make hundreds of watches that can do this, well, Miles of Earth-42 can’t imagine what other tech they have there. Tech he can use.
“I hear you, I hear you,” he tells his doppelgänger, his mask sliding over his face and distorting his voice. “Let’s do this.”
His first experience with interdimensional travel reveals that it is as strange as it is unpleasant��� almost like he’s free-falling, but directionally. He’s not usually one to get queasy, but Miles’ stomach flips with the sensation. He can’t help but be grateful when his feet connect to solid ground.
The group of spandex-wearing teenagers he’s accompanying are unphased, talking in low voices about their big plan—ignoring the way the ground shifts below them— the panel they’re standing on beginning to rise.
Miles isn’t sticky like the rest of them are. When the elevator panel starts to rotate, flipping the group of teenagers upside down, he doesn’t bother trying to hang on. He drops back to the ground below, the shock absorbers in his shoes reducing the worst of the fall, and tries to take in his surroundings.
The place is huge, that’s for sure. There doesn’t seem to be anyone in his immediate vicinity, but getting around unnoticed isn’t going to be easy. His suit is particularly lacking in the spandex department, and even if he were to take his mask off, he happens to share a face with the universe’s most wanted teenager. Plus, the band of spider-delinquents he’s supposed to be with will surely come looking for him when they realize he’s missing. He needs to move quickly—and he needs to move now.
Miles was right about the tech here. Screens beep and buzz down every corridor he turns, holographs appear with no clear point of projection, gravity is casually defied—even the ringing sound of the alarm comes from all around despite there not being a speaker in sight.
Those idiots. Miles presses himself into a corner as a group of Spider-People rush past. He knows he should probably go help his pseudo-team, but the room is clear now, and something catches his eye.
There’s a flash, and a giant metal spider crawls back into its home on the ceiling. Or at least, he hopes it’s a robot. He can’t really tell from here, he needs to get closer.
His mask disengages as he inspects the equipment— he can’t get close to the spider creature— but the scanner itself moves around like it’s…animate. Miles’ curiosity makes him careless. He doesn’t notice she’s there until she’s behind him.
“Let me guess,” She says, her voice clear and amused, unphased by how quickly he whirls around with his claw raised. “You’re Miles, right?”
He stares at her and squints— until she smiles.
He can’t help the way his guard lowers.
“I’m Margo.”
He’s heard that name before. She’s on their side— the “inside man—” as the others had called her. She’s the one keeping an eye on the situation inside of HQ, providing them with the opportunity that let them get here undetected. It hadn’t really mattered to him before, but now that he’s face-to-face with her, it’s no longer something he can ignore.
Just like he can’t ignore the erratic beating of his own heart.
She’s undeterred by his lack of response— or the way his mouth hangs slightly open as she inspects him.
“I like your braids, they look really nice on you.”
God, his mouth is so dry. He has to swallow, trying to push down the red that he can feel rising to his cheeks.
“Also that suit is fire! Did you make it yourself?”
Miles can barely nod, trying to force words out of his mouth with little success. “You gotta show me the sketches for it sometime.”
The alarm changes, getting shriller and more urgent— demanding their attention. She raises an eyebrow at him.
“Lemme guess, that has something to do with you.”
He barely has time to give a sheepish shrug before the large bay doors slide open, a hoard of spider-themed ‘heroes’ push their way through.
Miles sees his opportunity and takes it, sliding his ungloved hand into Margo’s—trying not to think too hard about the way their fingers lock perfectly.
“Run.”

Behind The Scenes - Chapter 27: Actors At Work

A few days passed, and Steven woke up in his room, he picked up his phone and got a text from Mordecai. He and the crew were at the studio. Steven looks at the time, the numbers read 9:10 and under it, it said March 26.
Steven got out of bed and went to the bathroom.
He stepped out and went to his closet and picked out his bright red star shirt and a pair of black basketball shorts. The hybrid put them on grabbed his white Converse, put them on, and tied them.
He grabbed his hat that he bought a few days ago and put it atop his curly hair, grabbed his phone, and went out the door. Steven went on his phone and looked up the distance.
Twenty-five minutes. Perfect.
Steven walked downstairs, went out the door, grabbed his bike, and took the ride to Burbank. He decided to listen to music on the way.
He grabs his earbuds, plugs them in, and puts on a song.
The Cartoon Network movie lot was already bustling with life. Steven parked his bike, and put his feet on the ground, As a tall and grey rock man walked up. he wore a black guard uniform. “Rada rada.”
Steven showed him the text that he got from his friend Mordecai. “I’m here to watch them film Snitzhel.” He said.
Snitzhel nods and rasied the gate. Steven biked inside the studio and saw actors, Crew members, And even familiar faces studying their lines, he was looking for Regular Show.
“Oh, excuse me?” Steven asked. He sees a boy, he is wearing a white hat that covers his head and neck, his clothes are a blue shirt and shorts consisting of a green backpack worn on his back, completed with white socks that were cupped around his ankles and black shoes.
“Oh, hello.” the boy said.
“Oh my gosh! your Finn The Human from Adventure Time! Can I have a picture?” he asked.
“Sure, man,” he said, Finn walked over and put his arm around the boy’s shoulders, and Steven took a selfie with the boy.
“Oh, can you point me to where the Regular Show studio is?”
“Oh, you see that soundstage over there?” he asked. Steven nods. “It’s there, soundstage twelve.”
“Thanks, Finn! Hey. Happy late birthday by the way.”
“Thank you!” he said, then Steven rode off to the soundstage.
He’d made it, he walked in and saw a large, acoustically treated space designed for recording the show. Inside, he saw high ceilings and expansive floor space to accommodate various setups. The walls are often lined with sound-absorbing materials, such as foam panels or curtains, to minimize echoes and improve sound quality.

The man has straight, dark brown hair that falls over his forehead and ears. He is smiling broadly, displaying his teeth. He is wearing a light-colored, button-up shirt. He also has a black and white checkered lanyard around his neck, He holds a clipboard under his arm as he walks to the director's chair.
“Coooollll!” Steven whispered, his eyes going starry, his friends smiled at him.
“I will ask him if you can watch,” Mordecai said, Walking up to the director.
“So, Steven. you want to be an actor?” Margret asked.
“Heck yeah, I do! That will be AWESOME!” He said, jumping up into the air, Margret chuckled, she liked him.
“Yeah, It’s a lot of fun, I love it you know.”
“I bet!” he said. Then, the Blue Jay walked back towards him and gave the hybrid a thumbs up.
“Okay places, guys! And action!”

“Regular Show: Brain Eraser, Scene One. Take one.” the Clapper Loader said, clapping the clapperboard.
Mordecai and Rigby were deeply engrossed in their latest video game session, the screen flashing with vibrant colors and intense action. Suddenly, a loud explosion erupted from the television, accompanied by bold letters declaring, “PLAYER 1 WINS!” Rigby slumped back into the couch, frustration etched on his face.
“Ugh! I lost again,” he groaned, his eyes narrowing at the screen.
Mordecai, with a smug grin, simply shrugged, his amusement evident. “Hmph. Hmph,” he replied, relishing his victory.
Rigby’s annoyance quickly turned to distraction as he rummaged through the couch cushions. “This stupid thing was throwing me off,” he muttered, pulling out a magazine that read, “Mustaches Monthly - SPECIAL HANDLEBAR ISSUE!”
Mordecai’s eyes widened in realization. “Dude! Pops' Mustaches Monthly! Benson told us to deliver this weeks ago. You have to give this to Pops.”
Rigby’s protest was immediate. “What?! Why do I have to?”
“Because you’re the tool who crammed it between the sofa cushions!” Mordecai shot back, exasperated.
Rigby huffed, sinking deeper into the couch. “I can’t get up now. I’m going to lose this sweet butt cheek groove I’ve been working into this couch! It looks just like me!” He gestured to the distinct impression his body had left on the fabric.
Mordecai rolled his eyes. “I’m not going up those stairs, dude.”
After a moment of silence, Rigby proposed a solution. “Fine, let’s play rock-paper-scissors for it.”
With determination, Rigby threw out paper while Mordecai chose rock. “Hmph hmph,” Rigby smirked, reveling in his victory.
“Whatever,” Mordecai groaned, begrudgingly conceding. As Rigby resumed his gaming, Mordecai reluctantly made his way to Pops’ room, where he could hear the sound of running water.
“Pops. Yo, Pops. I found your Mustache Monthly,” he called out, placing the magazine on a chair. Just as he turned, he was met with a shocking sight—Pops, fresh out of the shower and completely naked.
“Aaaaagh!” both Mordecai and Pops screamed in unison, their eyes wide with horror.
In the chaos, Mordecai caught an unintended glimpse of Pops' “junk mail.” Panic surged through him as Pops hurriedly covered himself with his hat, while Mordecai instinctively shielded his eyes.
“Aaaaagh!” they both continued to exclaim, trying to escape the awkward situation, but finding themselves blocking each other’s path.
“Uh... uh... uh... uh...” Mordecai stammered his heart racing.
“Uh... uh... uh... uh...” Pops echoed, equally flustered.
Steven was trying his hardest to contain his laughter.
Finally, Mordecai managed to slip past Pops, darting out of the room just as Pops retreated into his bathroom. Breathing heavily, Mordecai made his way back downstairs and plopped onto the couch next to Rigby.
“Stop playing for a second,” Mordecai panted. “When I went upstairs, Pops was getting out of the shower.”
Rigby looked at him, puzzled. “Yeah, so?”
“And he didn’t have a towel,” Mordecai replied, his voice laced with disbelief.
Rigby’s face twisted in disgust. “Ewww!”
“Cut! Perfect guys!” J.G said, standing up, Steven then burst out laughing.
“Not funny, Steven.” he glares at his friend.
“It is! you saw Pops naked, dude!”
Rigby looks at his two friends back to back.
“It was for the scene!” he protested.
“I know! but was that acting or real? cause it looked pretty real to me.” Rigby said, Mordecai punched him in the arm.
“Owwww!” Rigby said as his friend glared at him.
“You did a good job,” Margret said. Mordecai could still see Pops’… stuff, it’s burned into his brain. And they were rehearsed this last week!
“Thanks, Margret,” he said. Sighing to himself.
Steven looks at Mordecai.
“Okay guys, places!” J.G. sat in the director’s chair holding a bottle of water in his hand. “And…” The man said. “Action.”
“Regular Show: Brain Eraser, Scene Two. Take two.” the Clapper Loader said, clapping the clapperboard.
Mordecai and Rigby were lounging in the park, the sun casting long shadows as the day wound down. Trying to be helpful, Mordecai picked up Mr. Peterson's magazine delivery, intending to drop it off at the old man's house on their way back.
"I tried not to look and just give him the magazine, but I saw his..." Mordecai began, his voice tinged with horror.
Rigby, ever the jokester, interjected with a smirk, "His junk mail? Ha ha ha ha ha ha!"
Mordecai's face turned pale. "No, dude, I'm mentally scarred. It's like the image is glued to the inside of my eyelids. Every saggy, wrinkled, shriveled, pasty..."
"Whoa, whoa! Don't put it in my head," Rigby quickly interrupted, holding up his hand as if to ward off the mental image.
Mordecai glared at him, the ghostly vision still unsettling in his mind. "This is your fault. You have to help me."
Rigby sighed, realizing the gravity of his friend's distress. "I'll help you to forget it if you promise to stop talking about it."
A glimmer of hope appeared in Mordecai's eyes. "Deal."
They shook hands, sealing the agreement, each hoping to put the disturbing incident behind them.
Steven watches the whole filming process from start to end.

The woman has short, curly dark hair and wears glasses. She is dressed in a plaid shirt with red, blue, and black colors over a light-colored top. She is standing with one hand in her pocket.
“I… I am so sorry.”
“It’s okay, It’s my fault. Should’ve watched where I was going.” The woman said Steven heard the woman’s voice. It was the most calming voice he had ever heard in his life.
“What’s your name?” the woman asked.
“I’m Steven Universe.
“I’m Rebecca Sugar, nice to meet you.”

“Told ya Sage was a good idea,” Karl said smugly from the wall. Rosemary was squealing as she toddled around, almost-walking and following the creature.
“What?”
“The goat. Named her Sage.”
“Uh--”
“You know, parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme?” A pause. “Guess we need to get two more goats.”
“Definitely not.”
Ethan rifled through the years of property deeds, bonds, and other items that Karl had brought from the vault and deposited on the desk. They were in a large, open room that sat above the ballroom. This room had tall windows and vaulted ceilings as well. After a thorough cleaning, it was Rosemary (and goat) proofed. Karl offered it to Ethan as an office, and then dumped the entire contents of the vault so that Ethan could do whatever needed to be done.
Ethan’s face was a consistent expression of awe, and he pored over the documents as Karl worked at the wall panel. Heisenberg didn't know shit about paperwork, but was restoring electricity to this room, as well as giving Ethan more outlets, while they waited to talk to Eva. “What about a bed and breakfast?” Ethan said in a hopeful voice. “Rich tourists, I--”
“I would rather have that boulder punching asshole come over here every day for lunch, than that.” Karl had an old Edison fuse in his mouth, but the spite in his tone was clear even with his lips around the metal.
“What if we built something down in the area where the village was, though? We could do that easy, with all these resources.”
“You’re killin’ me, Winters,” Karl sighed, screwing the fuse in place and pulling out a length of wire, inspecting the ends. “Come to the Village Bed N Breakfast, there’s a local witch who will potentially kill you and try to turn you into a vessel for a hundred-year-old dead kid, maybe. Maybe not!”
Eva’s voice crackled through the speaker. “I am not a kid!”
Ethan scratched his fluffy hair, not tearing his eyes away from the papers. “Farmer’s market then. Something. I know we’ll have to make sure it’s safe first, but all this land…it’s, just so many possibilities, Karl."
Karl was stripping wire, and he shook his head. “Shoulda never pulled your moldy ass back into the world.”
Ethan now stared at Heisenberg, slapping a palm onto the desk as his eyes again widened in excitement. “Karl! A wedding venue!”
Now finally the engineer turned, peering at Ethan over his dark glasses. His eyes held thinly veiled contempt. Ethan prepared for another snide remark, but Heisenberg batted his thick lashes and said instead, "I haven’t even said yes, Winters.”
Even in the chilly room, Ethan’s cheeks blazed. When he looked back at the desk full of paperwork, his lips twisted into a smile.

“What I have to show you, I’m afraid only Ethan can see,” Eva said as the trio sat on the floor of the carpeted office. They were in the liminal space, Ethan’s hand draped over Karl’s knee, and everyone save Rosemary lounged in the afternoon sunlight. The toddler could appear and disappear at will, it seemed, and she roved in and out of sight. Ethan was getting better at sensing her no matter where she was, which eased his anxiety more than anything ever had.
Karl was petting the goat, and nodded. Eva said directly to the brunette, “If I can find a way to record whatever Miranda is planning, is there a way for me to have that transcribed to your world? The way that you made the radio work. I do not want to be forced to remember it all, I want you both to know whatever it is that I know.”
“Shouldn’t be too hard,” Karl said with a shrug. “I’ve got a few ideas. We can experiment.”
“Good…then…Ethan? Shall we?”
He waited for the other man to raise a magnetic field; when he did, Ethan pulled his hand away. It no longer hurt Ethan to move back and forth between spaces, but it always hurt Karl. The field seemed to absorb some of the shock. Now with a snapping sound, Heisenberg sat in the room without the reddish-blue glow of liminal space. Ethan, surprisingly tender, stroked a piece of Heisenberg’s hair that was near his cheek scar. Well, one of them.
“Watch Rosemary for me?”
“She an’ I have way too much fun to tell you about, Papa,” Heisenberg said with a smirk. This earned him another kiss on the cheek before Ethan went back to Eva.

Eva’s powers were far more developed than Ethan’s. When she took his hands, they disappeared from the manor altogether (which confused Heisenberg greatly, to see Ethan just…vanish) and when they reappeared near the crater, Ethan groaned.
“This being, this world…is like, ehm,” Eva searched for words. “An onion. Layers and layers deep. As the years go by the layers get embedded deeper and deeper. However, there is always more to learn and more to grow. It is like a city, always growing with every soul added to it. And it takes time to navigate places with purpose.”
“Yeah, setting foot into Miranda’s layer last week showed that pretty clearly,” Ethan said ruefully, and Eva smiled widely.
“That’s actually where we’re going!”
“Uh,” Ethan said with raised eyebrows. “Are you sure that’s a good idea? Last time, she wasn’t happy--”
“There aren’t a lot of protections, or borders, around any of the worlds here. It is easy to get from one to the other,” Eva admitted, “With one exception. Your world. The real world. As long as a being is a stored copy of a person, it can never leave. Miranda would have to go through the trouble of doing what Heisenberg did for himself and you. Finding the crystallized body, regenerating it.”
“Where is Miranda’s crystallized body, then?” Ethan asked with a sigh. Eva shrugged.
“Nowhere, that I’ve seen. But we are about to go into a place that has existed as long as she has. It is her layer, so to speak. No one else’s. Did you ever have dreams, after awakening, where there are people in the background, perhaps faceless or with strange faces?”
“Every night,” Ethan said with a nod. “Are those…visitors? Travelers from other layers?”
“They can be,” she said with a nod of her own, “They can also be just imprints of your own memory. Going between layers is how Karl visited you while you slept. For lack of a better word. Most people who simply die are not aware they are in any sort of moveable, malleable world that they have eternity to travel. It is like dreaming, and maybe what people think heaven is like. An ongoing stream of consciousness that is affected by the person’s mind. Multiply that by the thousands and that is what the Mold is. Just a very big library of information with individual books that are their own world. Every mind is a book.”
“Does Eveline ever…visit Miranda?” Ethan asked, realizing how strange the question sounded. But his dreams were plagued by both of them, and yet they didn’t seem to communicate. Eva shook her head. “Only I have the skill to maneuver into these specific layers, and it took millions of attempts, over decades that felt like thousands of years.”
He had nothing to say to this, but felt a bit of admiration for the girl's persistence, and Eva continued. “I can disguise myself now, Miranda does not know who I am at all. I can do that for you, as well. Change your appearance.”
“Okay,” Ethan said in what he hoped sounded like a brave and not halting voice. “As long as she can’t see us. As much as I want her dead--”
“She cannot die here,” Eva confirmed. “It would just be a very exhausting fight.”
She took his hands again, and they suddenly appeared in the village. As Ethan had seen it that night. The grass was green, the buildings were new; it was almost unrecognizable. He wondered what month it was since even though there were flowers in bloom, the air was biting cold. Eva walked confidently past a tavern, and rounded the main cobblestone street toward a procession. He followed, feeling unease growing as he was in the once-beautiful village.
A band played, and a huge party was participating in a parade. Flower petals were strewn by young women carrying baskets, after the band played. Eva pointed meekly to one of them; Ethan noticed the resemblance. A young girl with a long braid under her headscarf tripped along tossing the petals. He stared with no expression as the flower-petal-throwers advanced.
“That’s you?”
“From Mother’s memory,” she confirmed. Next in the procession came a swathe of people dressed in black, some carrying flowers, others carrying flags. Most of this group were women, but some elderly couples walked as well. She nodded toward one in particular, and Ethan froze. It was Miranda, walking stonily, dressed in black from head to toe.
“These are the widowers and parents of soldiers who did not return,” Eva explained, and both of them kept their eyes trained on Miranda as she walked by, not seeming to notice them or the others watching from the side of the tavern at all.
“The soldiers will be next,” Eva said, peering past the group.
“Celebrating…” Ethan tried to remember the date on the gravestone. “The end of World War One, right?”
“Yes,” Eva said, and then she shifted suddenly. “Next.”
They appeared in front of the meadow by Moreau’s property gate. It was impossibly beautiful, Ethan realized…the whole place was, when it was properly cared for. It looked almost like an enchanted forest. Miranda was having a picnic on the tall grass with her daughter, who wore a flower crown and danced a very dramatic dance across the moss. The woman was laughing. Ethan was frightened at first, but when it became clear that Miranda could neither see nor hear them, he said in a low voice to Eva, “It’s hard to believe what she…became.”
“She was very broken even in this part of my life,” Eva acknowledged. “I tried very hard to make her happy. After losing Father, she turned to medicine and science…some of that likely had to do with the outbreak. But…” the light voice trailed off into sadness, and they stepped into another scene.
Miranda wailed from a building nearby; it was night in this new scene. Ethan recognized one of the larger buildings, now turned into a makeshift infirmary where many beds were laid out next to each other. Blankets covered bodies, and with a sickening twist of his stomach he realized most of the people on the beds were children. He also noticed as Eva daintily walked between them, that many of them were dead or near death.
“This is awful,” he said, his throat closing up.
She didn’t answer him, but stood aside as he approached Miranda. Several other villagers had paused to watch her as well. Nurses, dressed in white and wearing masks, pried her from the ground and stood her up. They were all speaking Romanian and seemed to want to move the woman, but she wouldn’t tear herself from the lifeless corpse in her arms.
The girl was wrapped in a blanket, but as Miranda wrenched for her, a pale arm fell out of the material, bobbing strangely. The nurses thrust the child back into Miranda’s arms and used that strategy to move her. As they succeeded in dragging the pair of them out of the main treatment area, the last thing Ethan saw was the shock of pale blond hair cascading from the death blanket.
“Almost at the end,” Eva said in a hollow voice, and the scene moved. They were in darkness. She put a finger to her lips to Ethan, and they both watched the red light coming from an arm of the mold, to Miranda’s outstretched fingers. Lightly she brushed along the vine-looking substance.
A chorus of voices swelled in Ethan’s ears. He saw Miranda’s eyes widen in the dark. He was hearing what she heard. It was the mold. Or…the people in the mold.
Among the voices, “Mama?”
Miranda, who looked quite malnourished and miserable, perked up, running her hand along the cavern wall. “Eva?”
“Unde esti, Mama?”
“Eu sunt aici,” Miranda answered frantically. She looked around, as if expecting to see the owner of the voice appear at any moment.
The pair continued speaking to each other, as Eva sighed. Suddenly they were out of the cave, standing in daylight on an overlook where the entrance to the cavern was. Ethan could still hear Miranda’s frantic Romanian, but now he could hear no reply.
“I called to her for a short while,” Eva admitted, “I was lost and scared. But from this earth I was able to see…somehow, what she did to our people. I stopped trying to come back when I realized it.”
Ethan thought for a moment. “How were you able to…how are you able to, see into our world, when most people who die are just stuck in a dream?”
Eva shrugged. “I have not quite figured it out.”
“But if this is Miranda’s loop, how do you think she will ever come back?”
The scene changed again, and they were in a stone-walled lab. Ethan stared around the dungeon-looking area with distaste. There were cages in it, cells. Countless medical cabinets and supplies. It looked like a Gothic Frankenstein’s lab, mixed with a little bit of gore and horror. Jars of cadou lined one wall.
“Sometimes, she gets…aware again. She is so lost and trapped in the cycle of grief that mostly our life together plays, day by day. But I have watched her break away and come here. I can not shield myself from her here, it is very dangerous for me. But I believe that she is slowly researching and making a plan every time she has a lucid moment. She comes and writes. And her entire library is here already, everything she knows she simply has to come back to. She may be able to move fast if she continues having lucid moments. And I believe she will."
Ethan said nothing, noticing a large ornate book with Heisenberg’s crest on it on a nearby table. He reached out and opened it carefully, surprised to see pages filled with medical notes. There were photos, gruesome ones, and sketches of internal organs. Small x-ray photos were wedged between the pages as well. It turned Ethan’s stomach to see all of this, and he put the book down with a frown. He ran his hand over the metal horse in almost an apology. He still didn't know exactly what Karl went through, but just last night the man had told him he hated the experiments so much that he had killed himself. To no avail.
Fuck Miranda.
“So we…wait, more or less?” Ethan said, hands in his pockets as he surveyed the room again. He hated it here almost as much as he hated being in the makeshift hospital full of dying people. “Find out how she’s going to escape and use it against her?”
“I believe that would be best, along with reading whatever you can find from your wife’s research. Although Ethan…” she stared at him with a gravity she usually didn’t carry. “I worry that you will not be able to handle what some of those papers say.”
“You don’t know what I’ve lived through,” he said a bit redundantly, as Eva probably had access to every memory he possessed, “I can handle it.”
“I hope so,” was all she said as she took his hand and brought him back to the comfort of Heisenberg, Rosemary, and Sage the Goat.
