Hi Eliot! First of all, I wanted to tell you I love your art so so much!! You inspire me so much as an artist and you and Viv are one of the main reasons I'm backing The Book of Devotion Kickstarter!
I am also a DnD player and I wanted to ask you, do you ever feel disconnected from your characters? I am currently playing a campaign set in Ravnica from Magic the Gathering and I absolutely love it (100% recommend as a setting as well) and I love my character Daphne, but for some reason the past few sessions I've been feeling very withdrawn and unhappy with my RP choices, I feel Daphne very far away from me If that makes sense? Have you ever experienced something similar? Would love to hear your thoughts on this!!
Thank you!!
Wah thank you so much!!! 🥺 it's SUCH a fun concept I hope you'll enjoy it! Oh man, I'm sorry to hear you're feeling disconnected. It's such a bummer when something that got us so immersed and invested feels more distant. I've only played one campaign with the same character, so I'm not sure if I can give the best advice here. But yes, I do know the unfortunate phenomena! I'm actually struggling with the same thing right now so maybe we can figure it out togethaa. I'll answer more in-depth under the cut but if anyone else has tips, do feel free to drop them.
So yes, this all sounds familiar. Recently I'm just "going through the motions" of playing a character, without being immersed in them. Even if we still very much enjoy everything about the character or the game. Personally, I tried to pinpoint where this could come from. Is it an ingame thing, or is it something outside? (stress kills my creative drive) Has this campaign been going on for a while, have there been any exciting things happening with Daphne? Have you had fun opportunities for her to shine, was there anything that moved you? Just throwing some questions out there to help the wheels turning. I think bringing this up with your group and DM is also worth considering. Being invested in roleplay and your character is such a major part of the game (to me!) and maybe there's something where everyone can help. Be that giving you opportunities for dramatic or heartfelt moments, or simply hyping each other and their characters up around the game, not even just during sessions. But, onto the actual things that have helped me: I found a song that feels very Kasper to me, and I always try and listen to it before a session to get back into my PC's mindset and get that special spark and feeling back. Deep immersion mode... I also find creating art or writing around the character also very rewarding and exciting. I often see folks write a diary in character, or simply write up how their character felt after a session. I did that for a while after work -- and rereading diary entries with some very dramatic sombre music in the background brought a bit of that connection back, haha. Rereading notes for next sessions, or old ones is also worth a shot. What's your character all about and what's important to them? In the same vein I like to indulge in some Imagining, Daydreaming of past and future RP moments that excite me. Of course, all while listening to dramatic music...
Anyway I hope either you did figure it out in the meantime, or this helps just a little. Wishing us all to have fun, be crazy for our little OCs and sharing exciting moments and stories with each other.

What I Did In 2023
Ever since finishing school in 2017, I've always had a hard time feeling like I've "accomplished anything" in a given year. The months all blur together, and it's crazy how quickly I will forget something that happened or something I did.
To help myself with this, I wrote up a post last year of What I Did In 2022, which honestly felt good. So I figured I'd try again.
Sorry if you find these kinds of posts obnoxious. Hidden under the Read More just in case you do!
A few things I accomplished in 2023:
I wrote some stuff
I wrote Chapters 3 and 4 of Soul Symphony: Abandoned Encore. This is a sequel to a webcomic called Soul Symphony that I made and completed from 2010-2015. Olivia Myers, former music maestro and magical-girl adventurer, lives life as a depressed freelancer after quitting her teaching job. I think literally only like 2 or 3 people are even reading this, but good enough!
I wrote about JOMO, the Joy of Missing Out, when players have to work with different characters and resources in games.
I wrote a review of Bittersweet, an album by Jamie Paige.
My big piece of the year, which I chipped away at for months, reflected on nostalgia in culture and our personal lives.
I wrote about Cozy Games, which bizarrely was recognized in a Critical Distance weekly roundup.
I wrote about my fear for the direction of art and social media, a review of the writing in Sea of Stars, and other Cohost/Tumblr posts, which you can find in the #blogofkylelab tag.
As usual, I've continued my work as a Writer working on Rhythm Doctor, detailed below.
Art and Game Dev
Another sad year of barely 👏 drawing 👏 anything 👏 which is a huge bummer but I'm coming to terms with it.
Don't have anything finished to show for it, but doing a lot of messing-around in Twine and RPGMaker, which has been good for practice at least.
I funded the guest art and music for an upcoming card game, Isle of Swaps. I commissioned around a dozen artists, who I think drew around 50 total cards. Getting paid work as an artist is getting rough out there, so I wanted to help freelance artists the best I could.
Still working on Rhythm Doctor and A Dance of Fire and Ice at 7th Beat Games
We released Act 5 of Rhythm Doctor, which was our huge undertaking of the year! I co-wrote this with fizzd, and for the first time we were working with a completely blank slate with no levels made beforehand. I was recently looking through my Google Docs and was reminded how many different drafts and outlines I had come up with for this Act, some of which were long before the "athlete" story was even decided upon at all. I eventually helped come up with the character of Lucky (designed by our pixel artist Winston), and we got it all built out from there. I had a part in almost every sentence you see in the Act, I believe. I think I did an okay job, and players seem to really like the story and characters of Act 5, so that's a big relief.
Other Stuff
I've been running IndieGamesOfCohost for more than a full year now! I hope people have been enjoying this. It's been really tough to make the spare time for it, especially getting multiple developer interviews up per month, but I'm gonna keep pushing forward. Maybe "one interview a month" is a better goal to aim for. It's hard to tell how much people enjoy the efforts, but people do keep Liking and Sharing and Following so hopefully that means I'm doing something good with my spare time lol.
My partner and I moved! Aside from Act 5 of Rhythm Doctor this was probably the biggest thing. It was my first time apartment-hunting, as well as finding and paying for a moving truck and buying big furniture, getting renters insurance and all sorts of annoying stuff. In past apartments, I was lucky enough to be invited in as a roommate after the place was already set up. I also helped my parents pack up to move from the house they lived in for 28 years. Lots of moving. Hopefully no moving in 2024.
I hope your 2023 was bearable! Take pride in the little things you were able to get done. Let's all push through 2024 together.

Bear update
Woah hi been a while wheheeeey!
So, update I guess. Hi, it's been like a few weeks, a month? Feels like forever, basically ya boi hasn't been in the best headspace for art, like, at all, even picking up a pen has been hard. The reason is a huge cocktail of emotions that have basically put me into mental gridlock. First, job stresses. I am attempting to find more fulfilling employment instead of my current job as a barman in a toxic location, I want to try getting into film and TV, maybe storyboarding but...well...I suck. I don't have a good portfolio and I just feel like I would be awful in the art world. I suck at commitments, really badly. Age is also an issue, I am 26, which means I am now past the pretty, cute newcomer stage of employment and into the "Oh wow he failed and is coping hard" stage of employment. Opportunities are slipping away and I have nothing to show for it, I wish I focused up in Uni, then maybe I'd be better, but at the same time I know I wouldn't, this is just who I am, someone with massive ideas and dreams, but literally 0 drive to attempt to achieve them.
Next, mentally, my head is filled with a billion things, like...I can't focus. Every day my brain is a cocktail of all these real life issues, then filled up with. "DnD, Homebrew, get a house, , move out you failure, Lackadaisy, Armored core, Cyberpunk, PLAY GAMES, NO DONT, GO TO WORK, WHAT ABOUT THIS?, DO ART, WHICH ART!?, Study, write a book! Learn to make a game! Learn blender, learn video editing, MAKE A MOD." This is only a fraction of what my mind goes through every waking moment, it's exhausting and it basically gridlocks me into just scrolling twitter and tumblr, then logging off and feeling shit that I didn't accomplish anything. Rinse and repeat for 5 years. Sorry for the bummer update, I am gonna try made something work, as much as I can. I am thinking maybe I need to see a doctor about my brain. Maybe try get some kind of medication, I don't have ADHD to my knowledge but...I dunno man. maybe I do.

Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story
Developed/Published by: Jeff Minter, Digital Eclipse / Digital Eclipse Released: 13/04/2024 Completed: n/a Completion: Played and viewed all of “The Early Years” and part way through "The Hairy Years" and still digging into the rest of it.
I know, I can’t believe it either. Every Game I’ve Finished topical for two weeks and even posting a write up of a game on its day of release (well, for supporters, anyway). It’s like I’m a games journalist again (spit).
I was hugely excited for this after enjoying what I’ve played of Atari 50 (better than those flashback collections!) and The Making of Karateka, and although this is absolutely, 100% not what I would choose to put out if I was attempting to be commercial after The Making of Karateka, I’ve gotta say… fair play to them. Though they’re pretty much nailing their flag in the terrain that says the Gold Master Series is not so much The Criterion Collection of games as it is like… Vinegar Syndrome or something. I mean there’s nothing wrong with that! Someone’s gotta put out deluxe versions of Bruno Mattei films [checks notes] oh hang on, no.
(To be fair, it’s actually a lot more like my buddy Justin’s boutique label Gold Ninja Video, which actually does insane work to put out work by filmmakers who should absolutely be known better.)
Anyway. They say there’s a stonking 42 games on this, but that’s a slight exaggeration because there’s technically on 33 different games with a few offering different versions based on system (Gridrunner, for example, is on VIC-20, C64, Atari 8-bit and as a remastered version) and most of the games are pre-1985 so there’s a lot of stuff here that’s really only going to be of interest if you like diving into some very dusty cupboards. This is something I honestly enjoy very much, so I loved pulling out a VIC-20 game and trying to make sense of it, but for many, I assume, the main draw here is the fact that it’s a proper re-release of his beloved Tempest 2000, a well that Minter has been back to a bunch of times–I loved TxK to pieces. It’s a slight bummer that this doesn’t re-release Minter’s more recent games which have been delisted like the iOS “Minotaur Project” (of which only a couple of games have been re-released as Minotaur Arcade.) However, it seems pretty obvious that would be a ton of fucking work to port, as would, say, getting a Nuon emulator up to spec so people could play Tempest 3000, so that's... fine.
(There’s also no Defender 2000, but that’s rights issues, and as far as I remember people don’t think that’s any great shakes.)
Presentation-wise, you know what to expect with this release, the same wrapper as in Atari 50 and The Making of Karateka with some different colours and music. This is fine! I think I’ve settled into this three releases in. You get a ton of interesting images, details, and box art to look at, though I still have issues with the layout of the documentary/museum (I can't remember which terminology Digital Eclipse would prefer.) I have small quibbles: in “The Early Years” if you go through it in order you play a version of Bomber on ZX Spectrum before they introduce the system into the narrative (admittedly the kind of thing you won't spot unless you're brutally anal on these kind of things like myself.) Then the final video you watch recaps everything you’ve just learned in a way that makes you feel like it should either have come first, or been split up into more videos.
But I’d argue there’s deeper structural issues if you’re really trying to get people excited about video game history, and I again place it at the decision to go pure chronological* (as I did in The Making of Karateka.) If you play each game as you go, you’ll play a series of games so old and so ropey that you have to already be interested in this story to see it out. If you don’t know why you should care about Jeff Minter, I’m sorry, but a video of some talking heads and then immediately playing 3D3D, a baffling and slow first person maze game for ZX81 that has literally no analogue in the entire rest of his career is… not going to help! And I have to again bang on that I feel they just don’t place the games in enough context of the wider games industry at the time.
(*There's a quirk in that it's not exactly chronological, because all the Atari 8-bit ports are later in the documentary, which is a bit weird when you, for example, play two versions of Gridrunner and then the Atari 8-bit version several games later. I'm unclear on the exact reason if it, and if you're going to be even that irreverent, feels like you might want to just wildly reorder the whole thing for the audience anyway.)
I think Digital Eclipse’s counter overall would be that I probably want something more verbose and detailed which wouldn’t be as accessible, which isn't wrong. They might even argue that I'm basing my criticism on a hypothetical consumer who isn't even their intended audience! It's a hard line to ride, but I’d still argue that there’s a sense for storytelling in the curation here that’s missing--and I really don't want them to limit their audience because as critical as I might be, I love this series already and I want it to go on forever.
So yes, this is still the exact kind of thing I want to be released and if it’s opening up people to learning more about Jeff Minter and Llamasoft on their own time then I think it’s brilliant. I just think that anyone who picks this up who isn't already steeped in this era needs to be a bit forgiving and skip past all the ropey old games after looking at them for a couple of minutes tops and just enjoy reading the text and watching the videos until they get to the good stuff, so consider this fair warning before you buy it (because you should buy it.)
I mean if you only want this to play Tempest 2000 (and Llamatron 2112, actually) there’s nowt wrong with that, and that’s already worth the money.
Will I ever play it again? I’m still working through it!
Final Thought: I will, of course, be playing every game on this, and although I won’t be giving every Llamasoft release a full post, I have at least started with a write-up of each of the games in "The Early Years", as an introduction to the kind of things you’d be playing if you pick this up (and which sadly explains why you probably won’t want to play most of them... it gets better by the time you get to The Hairy Years, and significantly). If you want to read it, it's a supporter-only post over at my ko-fi. I suppose saying that makes my usual please subscribe stinger a bit pointless but let's hammer the point home why not. Support Every Game I’ve Finished on ko-fi! You can pick up a digital copy of exp. 2600, a zine featuring all-exclusive writing at my shop, or join as a supporter at just $1 a month and get articles like this a week early.

I've seen a lot of people do it, so if you are up for it~ Ship your moots!
FINALLY. THE AWAITED LIST OF MOOTS IS COMPLETE. sorry this took forever anon!!
now, this is going to be long & i will try not to overexplain my ship pairings. did i take time to think about each paring? yes. but, will they be serious? no. they are dumb & silly.
let the crack pairings begin <3!!
@dekusneakers x BAKUGOU & TODOROKI now you would think? sneakers in a throuple? how come? mmm simple. i couldn’t choose one for her so she gets both. the more the merrier. besides, she deserves love from both sides, kisses on both cheeks. one begrudgingly smooch & one icy kith. as a deku kin, she’s completely satisfied. you’re welcome
@izusun x AIZAWA & ORCA similarly, i can’t have my bestie here with just ONE babe. so, i thought why don’t we get a fatherly figure & a dad bod to give her all the love she needs. so yes, bestie, you two deserves hugs at both sides of you. a twiggy one & a muscly one. the sun needs some shade, & that shade is these men.
@midnightpirates x SUKUNA he’s a mass murderer !! you can’t— oh, but i can. you see, yanna here hates mahito & guess who was the one to fuck up his shit. ah, that’s right, it was sukuna. two mahito an/tis sitting in a tree <3 it’s the perfect match made in hell.
@goth-himbo-dabi x DOCTOR WHO once again, people might wonder: why not dabi? my answer? it’s because my bby here finds the twiggy men attractive. i know, bummer. & you can’t get any twiggy-er than david tennant & matt smith. but which doctor? all of them.
@minisheku x KAMINARI i see you simp for his dunce face. & honestly, who wouldn’t?? also, i originally put sheepku,, but that’s ,, a bit weird. but, here’s the solution. you OWN a sheepku, with kaminari. ah yes, a modern day family unit. & he can entertain you, as well as be a source of electricity for your drawing tablet !! resources !!
@oyavaski x EN you said he was hot literally in your tags earlier in a reblog. so, i am simply gifting you water to quench your thirst. may you two meet in afo, & fall in love in the subconscious of deku’s mind. will deku feel awks? yeah. but like pfft, he’s so whipped for bkg, he’ll forget you two chilling in the corner of his thoughts.
@okworstie x GOJO & WATARI i never have to look up the gojo tag, like ever. because you’re always plastering his face all over my timeline. & yes, this is a good thing. but, the same applies to watari. i have never even seen bakudiez, or whatever it’s called, but apparently he’s aro, & there’s a moth man, & tape hits post limit thursday’s? yeah just keep both, mimi.
@rrandomtthings x AN/TI as one of fellow loyal, amazing bkdks, i think it’s only fitting that you find true love with a bkdk an/ti. create the banti we seek in our community. the enemies to lovers trope is in your blood, written in your deku genes. so, i dedicate the banti movement with this small offering of a ship. may you find diamonds on the minecraft server & build a diamond cabin.
@believeyourgalaxy x ITADORI you two are such cinnamon rolls !!!! super friendly. super kind. super relatable. & together, you guys can pin over megumi. maybe hopefully, sam can help itadori with his low iq brain to finally get together with megumi. because damn, sam can be like “this is my boyfriend, itadori. & this is itadori’s boyfriend, megumi.”
@wrensknight x SHIRAKUMO i didn’t even know it was oboro birthday, until you not only made a public post about to, but made art for him. cloud boy needs that partner to respect & cherish him entirely. & you just treat him so right?? draw him so good?? i hope you can go cloud watching & then later, ride the clouds with him. till death do you guys uh,, you know,,
@b1m0 x MIDORIYA you can't stand when he gets injured, let alone reckless & trying to save the world, when he should literally be saving his own ass. but, that just means you care about him DEEPLY. plus, you both are wholesome people. obviously two cinnamon rolls make a whole bakery !! & who doesn't want a bakery ?? i sure do! wehjw idk why i brought the point here, but just know you two make sense.
@mysterionrising x RENGOKU & VIGILANTE DEKU it’s that enemies to lovers trope once again !! for someone who wrote him off as annoying the first seconds she met him, kenny sure flipped over to the stan side. ever since then, i can only see kenny when i see rengoku. but, you know who else reminds me of kenny. vigilante deku. it’s super fruity that you have an entire bomb playlist for him. so keep him too !!
@kamishima x KIRISHIMA you are the biggest kiri simp i have ever met. you basically ship kiri with anyone who makes him happy. though, you do have a lot of ships, but with kiri it’s different. & so, i was thinking ‘mmm, if bug ships kiri with so many people?? shouldn’t she ship him with HERSELF?’ boom. suddenly both kiri & bug are happy, with a lovely home. my work here is done.
@ckatsudon x LAW LIET did i dig through your blog. why yes. & you know what i found? reblogs & tags dedicated to L. he’s best boy. he’s precious. he deserves a better end. an end with you. mmhmm !! because if we rewrote death note, where you were light, i think L & light could have been canon. & that also would make you happy. & the rest of the entire world
@drfox-kinnie x UNIKITTY i don’t even know the show, let alone who unikitty is exactly. but, you reblogged a banner, confirming your love for unikitty. & so, i am of course doing you a big favor !! she’s bubbly, friendly, & passionate just like you !! & bestie, while i may not know nothing about her, i know you love her. so, maybe you two platonically have a wonderful time, adventuring with the other wholesome characters !! also,, is she big enough to travel on? if so, look i got you a cat car!!
@midorree x MINACHAKO i ship you with another ship. why? because i can. besides, you are like my moot who is genuinely a head leader of the minachako ship on my timeline, & you have steadily been converting me?? but, i also noticed that mina AND uraraka have stolen your heart, & you have yet to fight them for it back. i hope you three can go into a brawl & see who can grab each other’s hands fastest.
@kiribakuxkacchakolover x HATSUME YOU HAVE IT AS YOUR TITLE HEADER. like you are literally having a billboard that calls mei your cutie patootie. &, you ask, & you shall receive. i hope you two can be the dorkiest nerds together, & ramble for eons & eons. i hope i’m invited to the transformer wedding you two will have <,3
@balaroo x MIRUKO like before, you too have your interest out in the open in your title header. but, you see, miruko is a total babe, with confidence & ego & with this stride that makes even the most alpha male quiver. you would be a total wife to miruko’s girlboss energy & that’s why this ship totally works.
@quix-mix x FREDDY FAZBEAR my precious lil young moot, i dug into your blog & noticed you enjoy the fnaf games. & mmm are you perhaps wanting to cuddle a certain demonic teddy bear? well, i approve. he'll fall in love, head over heels, with your art, he might not possess you right away !! might. but, listen, you always do enjoy the villains (; i gotchu !!
@lonely-rabbit x LANCE you said we’re moots & i agree, we are. however, i have noooo idea what even are your preferences. so, i went digging. & it’s such a coincidence that we bonded over our voltron trauma, & yet you still continue to simp over lance. &, like i don’t blame you !!! he’ll always be dumb baby & so all i ask is that you love him, for our sake. & sanity.
#star responds#THIS TOOK FOREVER STILL#EVEN WITH MY SHORT EXPLANATIONS#but tadaaaa#the moots have now been complied#& ahajsbkssj i HOPE you all like your pairings. even the dumb ones <#I ALREADY KNOW SOME OF YALL WILL LAUGH LMAOO#otherwise if you want to roast me & what my pairing would be. pls feel free to do so#this was so fun omgg thank you anon for this opportunity!!#anon#moots

request → “Hi~ I'm absolutely in love with your work. It makes me so soft uwu. I was wondering if you could write a Haechan one similar to the roommate Jeno one you wrote. About what it's like to just live with him” —@demiwizardstay
pairing → demon!haechan, reader, guardianangel!mark
word count → 4.5k
a/n → whoops i made this into a demon!haechan au hahaha sorry i hope this is domestic enough for u tho :D
your eyes must be playing tricks on you.
there’s no other reasonable explanation.
on the other hand, the shadow splayed out ever so comfortably on your couch seems to be very real. it must be just as aware of your presence as you are of its but to your surprise, it isn’t telling you to put your hands where it can see them or demanding to know where all your most valuable items are. it sits there, peacefully as if it owns the place. for a split second you consider the possibility that you walked into the wrong apartment but the key in your hand reminds you that the situation you are in is not your fault in any way.
“so... are you gonna scream or just stand there?”
the figure’s voice is unmistakably masculine and drips with sass. you know you should feel scared. your heart should be pounding as your shaky fingers dial 911 and you hysterically report an intruder to the authorities and beg them to come fast. however, it seems that this stranger’s calm aura has rubbed off on you as you respond with an equally as unbothered tone.
“well, i would appreciate it if you invited me in.” you pause. “oh wait, it’s my apartment.”
with that, you step inside and go about your regular routine with a calmness you didn’t know you possessed; especially when there was an… unwelcome visitor lounging on your sofa. despite that, you kick off your shoes and toss your jacket somewhere on the floor like you normally would. you twirl your keys around your fingers as you go to turn to flick on the light switch. it rids you of the darkness that had settled upon your apartment and the stranger is completely revealed to you.
the first thing you notice about them is their sun kissed skin that’s littered in the freckles you would compare to the most captivating constellation. although, the stranger’s flawless complexion is the least of your worries considering the two horns that peek out from underneath their tufts of brunette hair.
you physically restrain yourself from asking for his skin routine and instead opt for yet another sarcastic comment. “all ready for halloween, i see.” your eyes lock onto the appendages, choosing to ignore how realistic they were. “was party city having a sale?”
your comment seems to get your uninvited guest out of his daze as he scoffs. “are you kidding?”
“hey, this is my place, i ask the questions,” you scold.
he ignores you, instead going to tug on his horns. “these are all real, baby.”
you force yourself to maintain eye contact with him, waiting for him burst into laughter and tell you it was all a prank. instead, his unfaltering smug gaze pierces into you. you swear you stop breathing when his eyes flash bright red for a second.
“alright, you can tell the camera crew to come on out.” you glance around hoping this really was just some sort of hidden camera–practical joke type of thing. you half expect ashton kutcher jump out and tell you that you had gotten punk'd but you’re never granted that privilege. your eyes end up back on the boy lounging on your sofa and he returns the stare, eyes narrowed and mouth curved into a smirk.
it was almost… devilish.
“oh my god.”
“not quite.” he finally stands, stretching his limbs out without a care in the world. “wanna try again?”
you stay silent, mouth slightly agape. there was only one other explanation.
he’s satan. and he’s also in your living room. and the worst part was how undeniably hot he is.
you regret giving him the satisfaction of your stunned silence as it seems like that was the exact reaction he wanted. he laughs at your expression and it just sounds evil.
“alright, alright. i’ll tell you what i am. but only because you mortals are always so cute when you’re scared.”
“i’m not scared, you idiot,” you interject without a second thought. “i just didn’t know i’d be selling my soul today. it’s a total bummer. i’m so young, i still have so much to do. i never even got around to trying yoga with ryujin!”
the boy’s eyebrows furrow in confusion. “your soul? did i say i wanted your soul?”
“well, you’re like, satan right? isn’t that what you do?”
he rolls his eyes. “i’m obviously a demon. satan is a loser who never leaves his fiery throne. which, by the way, isn’t as cool as it sounds. we’re not on the best terms at the moment.”
“so... you don’t want my soul?”
he shakes his head vigorously, looking disgusted at the mere idea of it. “what would i even do with it?”
“i don’t know. honestly i’m just going off of what i see in the movies.”
“that was your first mistake, baby.” he makes his way closer to you. “this isn’t the movies.”
“okay, back it up,” you say, attempting to put some distance between you and him.
he raises his hands in defeat as he obeys, retreating back to your couch.
“why are you here of all places? shouldn’t you be sipping on a piña colada with satan right now?”
he crosses his legs nonchalantly. “like i said, we aren’t on speaking terms. in fact, i’m kind of… banned.”
“banned?” you echo. “from where?”
“hell? duh.”
you scowl at his attitude. “it’s not my fault you’re on timeout.”
he pinches the bridge of his nose in frustration. “don’t call it that. it’s just a punishment.”
“same thing,” you say, making your way into the kitchen. you weren’t sure if leaving a demon unattended in your living room was the best idea but the initial shock had already worn off. besides, it seemed like he had been in your apartment for a while already. “what did you do anyway?”
“it’s not even that bad,” he grumbles.
“must have been if you got kicked out of hell.” you chuckle to yourself as you open up your pantry, looking for something to stuff your face with. “do you understand how bad you must be if even the devil himself can’t stand you?”
“i’m not bad, per se,” he says, picking at his nails. “just a little annoying.”
“no kidding,” you grumble to yourself, rummaging through your pantry, in pursuit of your favorite snack. you were sure everything would make more sense once you got some food in your system. when all you find is an empty, crumpled bag where your chips had once been, you whine loudly. “did you eat all my hot cheetos?”
“they reminded me of home!”
“i can see why they kicked you out,” you retort.
“listen, i get that this is an inconvenience—”
“that’s kind of an understatement.”
“but, this is the only place i can stay. turns out people freak out when you appear in their living rooms. you were the only one that didn’t.”
“yeah, people usually don’t take too kindly to that—hold on, did you say stay?”
he crosses his arms over his chest. “where else am i supposed to go?”
“anywhere but here.”
he gives you an unamused stare, his eyes glinting red once again.
“i mean, don’t you have any demon friends you can stay with?”
“not here. we avoid earth at all costs. it’s trashy. that’s why this is a punishment.”
not even you can argue with that. “understandable. well, how long are you gonna be here?”
“don’t know.”
you blink at him. “so… you’re planning to crash with me until satan decides to be your friend again?”
he groans. “first of all, he’s never been my friend. second of all, yes, that was the plan i had in mind when i broke into your house.”
“broke in?”
“well, actually i used teleportation powered by the dark arts to get in but i don’t think your tiny human brain is ready for that conversation.”
“and i don’t think it’d be in your best interest to insult the person you’re currently trying to move in with.”
that seems to shut him up, as he purses his lips together and stares at you blankly.
“listen, if we’re going to do this, there’s gotta be some ground rules, okay?”
he stays silent so you decide to continue.
“you have to pull your own weight around here. you might be some powerful being of the underworld but that doesn’t mean you get out of laundry day and doing dishes, got it?”
he seems displeased, if the frustrated huff of air he lets out is anything to go by.
“and you have to promise me that by staying here you aren’t putting me in any kind of danger.”
“well, i can’t guarantee i won’t cause problems,” he says, raking his fingers through the hair in between his sharpened horns. “but i can protect you from whatever crap comes our way.”
you contemplate it. you weren’t entirely sure what a demon like him was capable of but it seemed like it would be a list that was equally lengthy as it was impressive. yet, you still can’t bring yourself to agree to anything.
as if he senses your apprehensive nature, he grabs your chin, forcing you to look into his hazelnut eyes. you only get to admire the warm tint for a split second before his eyes flash red yet again. they stay glowing longer than any of the previous times; long enough for you to notice how shiny and bright they are, reminding you of ripe cherries.
“i promise.”
the tone of his voice is surprisingly firm and definitely the most serious you’ve heard him the entire night. he retreats his hand from you and you find yourself leaning forward, almost craving his touch. his eyes go back to their original hue and you feel yourself regain your senses.
“what did you just do?” you ask, leaning back from him. “what kind of dark magic was that?”
he tries to conceal his smile but ultimately fails, his pearly whites coming onto display. “that wasn’t magic, baby. i believe you just got lost in my eyes but don’t worry. i would too.”
you let out a bitter laugh. “oh my god, you’re vain.”
“do you mortals have to mention him every five seconds?” he chides, grimacing.
it takes you a moment to realize who he’s referring to but when you do, you erupt in laughter. “really? that gets to you? you’re pretty sensitive for a big and bad demon.”
“i have a name, baby.”
“so do i.”
his lips curve into a coy smile. “donghyuck.”
you give him your name in response, not even bothering to think about it twice, much to your surprise. most would probably be more hesitant to introduce themself to a demon, much less invite them into their home.
yet here you were, doing both.
he offers you nothing more than a grin—it seemed more genuine than the last—before turning on his heel to make his way farther into your apartment. “so, where will i be sleeping? i was thinking your bed would be ideal.”
“well, i was thinking you could start with a thank you,” you suggest, trailing after him.
he saunters down the hallway, twisting the knob of the door second to the left and peeking in. you can only imagine how much snooping around he had done before you had arrived, judging by the fact that he maneuvered your home so expertly.
he hums as he scans the room as if it’s the first time (which you’re sure it’s not). “it looks comfortable enough for the two of us.”
you can tell there’s no arguing with him, especially as he steps inside and sits himself on the edge of your bed, hands running over the soft fabric of your comforter. he bounces up and down a couple times, seeming satisfied enough with the mattress.
in the blink of an eye, he’s underneath the heaps of blankets, tucked in snuggly.
you exhale, trying to maintain patience. “i can tell this whole dark magic thing is going to be a problem for me.”
even though only his eyes peek out from beneath the polyester sheets, you’re positive he’s wearing an obnoxious smirk. his voice comes out slightly muffled when he answers, “think of it as a blessing, not a curse.”
“we’ll see.” you try to suppress a yawn but it manages to escape you, eyes squinting and your hand clamping over your mouth. “right now, i gotta sleep. hopefully i’ll wake up tomorrow and realize this was all a dream.”
“so, what you’re implying is that i’m a dream?”
“i meant to say nightmare.”
“that’s more accurate.”
as if the dazed tone of his voice didn’t give his sleepiness away, donghyuck’s drowsy eyes and horns sinking into the soft plush of your pillow certainly did. he looked the least threatening right then and there and you decide that this is the donghyuck you like best. you can’t help the sudden urge you feel to curl up in bed right next to him and doze off into blissful unconsciousness.
“what are you waiting for? get in here.”
could demons read minds too? you can’t be bothered to think about it for another second before you take donghyuck’s very tempting offer and crawl into your bed. you don’t care that you’re not in your pajamas or that you smell like coffee beans, courtesy of the cafe you worked at.
all you can seem to focus on is the feeling of donghyuck’s soft breath against your neck and his oddly cute snores. it was ironic; a demon all cuddled up beside you, sleeping like a baby. you almost giggle at the striking comparison.
needless to say, you fall asleep with a smile on your face.
+
“you know, it really pisses me off to come home and see you sitting in the exact same position you were in when i left.”
donghyuck rolls his eyes, an expression he’s mastered over time. “what else am i supposed to do? you made it pretty clear that you hate my demonic rituals and that’s kind of my speciality.”
you shrug as you kick your shoes off upon entering your shared apartment. “i don’t know. but binging the entire marvel movie saga can’t possibly be healthy.”
“we don’t have this in hell!” donghyuck exclaims, gesturing to the television his eyes remained glued on.
“well, you should get used to life on earth considering you don’t know how long you’re gonna be stuck here.”
“i’m already on it. pop culture is actually really informative.”
“not what i meant. i was thinking more along the lines of a job.”
donghyuck finally tears his eyes away from the television to give you an unamused stare. “that’s really funny, y/n.”
“i’m serious! would it kill you to get off the sofa?”
“no. nothing would. i’m immortal, remember?”
you narrow your eyes. “oh yeah, almost forgot. you’re gonna be a bother to me forever and ever.”
“this isn’t the ideal situation for me either. but no need to torture me with low life mortal tasks.”
“bills gotta be paid, it’s a part of life,” you respond, taking a seat beside him. “or else we’ll both be breaking into people’s houses and begging them to move in.”
“i didn’t beg, alright? and i didn’t break in either! i simply... appeared.”
“that’s even worse.”
“you didn’t seem to mind when you were all snuggled into me this morning.”
donghyuck’s words paired with his taunting tone cause you to feel slightly warm but you ignore it for the sake of a comeback. “you seemed comfortable yourself because when my alarm for work went off your arm was pretty tight around me.”
you swear you see him pout for a moment. “that’s not my fault! there aren’t many people open to cuddling in hell! i was just… seizing the opportunity.”
“since you’re all about opportunities, you should really look into that job. remember what we agreed on? no slacking off.”
“i’m not! just look in the kitchen!”
you know whatever it is, you’re not prepared for it. nevertheless, you tiptoe to said area, hoping your roommate had simply followed instructions and done the dishes and swept. but, of course, that itself is too much to ask as you watch the sink overflow with suds, plates and silverware scrubbing themselves clean and floating into their respective cupboards. a broom dances across the tiled floor, dust flying everywhere. you find that the mess in your kitchen resembles a train wreck; you want to look away but you just can’t.
you call out to donghyuck, eyes still trained on the chaos before you, asking, “what did we say about rituals?”
“it’s a little more complicated than a ritual, baby!”
once you finally gather enough willpower to walk away from the kitchen and whatever is happening in it, you return to the living room, placing yourself in front of the television that donghyuck is so entranced in.
“you’re coming with me to work tomorrow, got it?”
donghyuck groans for a second before rolling his eyes dramatically hard. “fine. now, can you move? the avengers are about to fight thanos.”
you comply, retreating to your bedroom but not before shouting back, “iron man dies!”
you shut your door, donghyuck’s frustrated screeching still coming through loud and clear.
+
your phone alerts you that it’s 6 am by playing an alarm so loud donghyuck falls out of bed. comically enough, it’s the loud thump! that comes when donghyuck makes contact with the floor that really gets your eyes to flutter open. you peek over the edge of the bed, every bit of grogginess leaving your body the second you see your roommate tangled in your sheets, limbs sprawled on the ground.
“are you okay?” you ask, laughter lacing your words.
“doing just fine,” he mumbles in response. soon thereafter, his eyes shut once again.
“hey! no way are you going back to sleep, we have work!”
you drag yourself out of bed over to where donghyuck lays, attempting to resume his peaceful slumber. you grab his arms, attempting to hoist him up. you’re almost positive he’s making it more difficult than it should be as he lets his body go completely limp in your grasp. when you finally get him standing upright, he smiles lazily at you, obviously still half asleep.
“c’mon dork, you need to get ready. you’re gonna make some cash today!”
+
donghyuck makes it clear he understands nothing as the morning progresses.
he doesn’t get the importance of being on time or even working in the first place. he offers to just take out your landlord, which according to him will “solve all your problems”, more times than you count and you’re sure that if he mentions it one more time you’d actually consider it. he also claims he doesn’t understand the concept of a shower, asking you to help him out, yet the knowing smile on his face lets you know he’s more than well aware of what it entails. unfortunately, you realize this after spending more time than you’d care to admit explaining the concept of getting naked to him in a tight, confined space to him only for him to request a demonstration.
upon leaving your apartment, more new things are revealed to donghyuck. you can’t help but admire the wonder and awe in his eyes. the adoration quickly wears off when he throws a temper tantrum at the subway station, refusing to board it and you have to physically force him on and promise that no, he won’t get trapped inside.
despite the slight bumps in the road, you arrive at your shift with time to spare. the clock tells you that you won’t have to be behind the counter for another five minutes so you grab your apron and provide donghyuck with one too. you give him quite possibly the quickest tour of the cafe ever and explain to him over five times what you were there to do (“so, we just take people’s orders? we serve them?” “and they pay for it.” “just when i thought it couldn’t possibly get dumber”). you end putting him on cleaning duty since you were well aware of his lack of social skills. he frowns when you tell him he has to do it himself, no magic allowed. the last thing you needed was someone getting nearly knocked over by a levitating broom and bringing it to your manager’s attention. speaking of—
“good morning, y/n,” greets doyoung. his hair is slicked back and his eyes shine, as always. “always a pleasure to see you on your shift.”
donghyuck watches you cautiously, observing the way you smile nervously and avoid meeting doyoung’s eyes. he assumes he has some kind of authority over you.
“and hello there. who might you be?”
doyoung is now very aware of donghyuck’s presence, giving him a wide smile but a menacing stare. you don’t get a word out before donghyuck’s giving him a polite smile and nod of his head.
“i was just hired, y/n is showing me the ins and outs. i honestly could not be happier working under leaders like you, sir.”
doyoung hums, obviously enjoying donghyuck’s praise enough to let it blind him from the fact that you hadn’t even been hiring in the first place. “sir, huh? haven’t heard that one before.”
donghyuck holds his breath, wondering if he had overdone it.
“i like it. you seem like a hard working fellow. glad to have you on the team.” your boss gives him a firm pat on the back before walking away, probably to go scare some other employees.
donghyuck sticks his tongue out at him once his back is turned and you simply laugh, smile still present on your face when your first customer arrives.
+
“i’m here!”
you glance up from the cash register to catch your coworker rushing in, looking frazzled… as always.
“hey mark,” you greet, giving him a welcoming smile. “i’m so glad you’re here. there’s been this crazy demand for frappuccinos all day and you know i suck at those.”
mark chuckles as he ties on his apron. “no offense, but the only order you should be taking are the puppuccinos.”
you shoot him the most non-threatening glare possible which ends up with you bursting into a fit of laughter. “i’m not even gonna argue with that.”
“hypothetically, if i made doyoung’s coffee explode on him but made sure he didn’t know, would you be mad?”
you roll your eyes at donghyuck’s bold entrance yet you still giggle. “at this point, i say go for it. ooh, maybe we could even sneak out while he’s cleaning it up. what do you say, mark?”
where there would usually be a giddy laugh, there’s nothing but silence on your coworkers behalf. you put a pause on counting the money in the register to steal a glance at mark who’s eyes are dead set on donghyuck who also seems to be intensely focused on the blonde.
“demon,” mark mutters.
you feel yourself freeze up; how could he possibly know? despite the panic that settles upon you, you’re sure donghyuck will find a way to handle the situation. you expect a lie, maybe even some magic if the situation called for it. when you see his lips curve upwards sinisterly, you know you’re in for an entirely different outcome.
“angel.” there’s a teasing lilt in donghyuck’s voice; it sends chills up your spine.
mark’s jaw is clenched and you know he’s equally as tense as you are. “we should go, y/n.”
“mark, he’s just—”
“now.”
the sudden desperation yet dominance in mark’s tone is even more alarming than donghyuck’s.
“you know,” donghyuck begins, rounding the counter, dramatically. “i’ve never been a fan of the way guardian angels think they own their person.”
you swear your brain shuts down. there was no way you had come into contact with a demon and now an angel—your guardian angel. and there was definitely no way it was your closest coworker, right?
“it’s our responsibility—she is my responsibility.”
donghyuck folds his arms as he gives mark a once over. “you won’t mind if i take over, right?”
mark chuckles, begrudgingly. “you know i can’t let that happen.”
“i’m not hurting her, i’d never hurt her.” donghyuck takes his place next to you, wrapping an arm around you. he peers down at you, eyes glowing red for the first time since your first encounter. “my angel.”
you know the nickname is to piss mark off and you assume it works as you observe his hands clench into fists. although, you’re more focused on how the pet name effortlessly rolled off donghyuck’s tongue, like temptation itself.
“don’t make this difficult for yourself,” donghyuck continues. “you know feelings are dangerous. that’s what they tell you when you first sign up. just don’t let that get you into trouble, got it?”
the tension is suffocating and you almost wish a customer would enter the currently empty cafe to save you from it. although, donghyuck makes sure that you don’t have to endure it any longer as a second later, you’re both gone, only a cloud of red smoke left behind.
mark stands alone in the cafe.
he had gotten this job for you; to look after you.
perhaps he had caught feelings, as well.
he assumes that was his first mistake.
+
when donghyuck takes you back to your apartment, it seems the awkward atmosphere from the cafe has followed you home.
“uh, can i ask what that was all about?”
“that guy, mark was it? yeah, he’s your guardian angel. i can’t stand it when those guys act like they’re in charge of the person they’re sent to look after,” he seethes.
you watch donghyuck’s fit of frustration carefully, eyes wide. when he sees how confused you are he can’t help but sigh.
“i’m sorry, i just… didn’t appreciate him acting like you were his. guess i don’t really like the thought of that.”
you would have to be oblivious beyond compare to not realize donghyuck was completely and utterly jealous. you prod him further, asking, “well, then who would you rather i belong to?”
he glances up at you. “whoever you want, baby.”
“you know what? i think i have somebody in mind.”
not even a second later, donghyuck takes you back in the security of your bed, under your piles of fluffy blankets. what feels most comfortable (and strangely familiar) is the feeling of donghyuck’s arm clinging to you, making you sure you’re pressed right into his chest like a puzzle piece.
“the person you had in mind was me, right? ’cause if not, this might be awkward.”
your eyes roll back despite knowing he can’t see it. “no, it was mark.”
“not funny.”
your shoulders shake with laughter. “it’s a little funny.”
“whatever, keep laughing. just let me hold you, alright?”
“that would be heaven.” silence settles upon the both of you as you go into nearly hysterical laughter. “get it? because you’re a demon… from hell… and that’s like, the opposite—”
“yeah, i get it, baby.” he pauses. “how many more lame jokes surrounding me being a demon will i have to endure?”
“i definitely have more where that came from so my guess is... more than you can count.”
he moans in displeasure. “you’re lucky you’re cute… for a mortal.”

Can of Coffee
Bobby/Kim Jiwon Scenario
Request: 16. Bobby please✨
Prompt: “You look like an idol.” “Who?” And then you mentioned the name of the guy who’s talking to you.
“Oh God, I’m so sorry!”
“It’s fine...”
Saturday night, around 11PM to be precise. You sighed deeply as you looked down to what used to be coffee in your grasp, spilled as you got out the convenient store. Just your luck, a guy decided to go in, very quickly too, when you went out the door. You had not even sipped the coffee yet. Thankfully, it didn’t ruin your shoes but it was still an unfortunate event.
“Why is this person not looking at me?”
Standing in front of you was a guy quite taller than you. His hair was messy, almost looked like he just got up from bed, with his baggy pants and sweaters, layered with another jacket. A dark grey face mask was covering his face. You could barely see his eyes with how messy his hair were, and also, the looking away thing. Him looking away seemed more of trying to hide his face, rather than an expression of embarrassment or shyness.
“I’ll buy you a new one very quick—“
The guy quickly moved to ran back in the convenient store, it seemed like he was in such hurry and distressed, but you called him. “Wait,”
Silence.
“You look like an idol.” You blurted without thinking. “But I couldn’t quite put my finger on who...”
“Who?!” The guy replied quickly. There was a hint of nervousness in the tone of his voice, but you couldn’t really tell why.
“Uh, you know that guy from ikon? What was his name again...” You hummed. “B.I? No, the other one, Bobby... Yeah, Bobby!!!” You laughed at your own words. “Sorry, I’m a little random sometimes.”
“Uh...” The man awkwardly looked at you. “You still want the coffee? I mean, I don’t mind buying you two even.”
“Nah, it’s alright. I have plenty of that cheap-brand coffee at home anyway!” You laughed.
“I insist.”
You widened your eyes in amusement for a second. “Alright then, make it two, but the other one’s for you. How’s that sound?”
“Cool.” He shrugged and started walking back inside the store, with you following him from behind.
**
“So, what’s your name anyway?” You asked out of the blue when both of you reached the cashier.
The guy looked back at you for a good second, almost like the question you asked was so unbelievable.
“What? Oh... you thought I was hitting on you, huh?” You rolled your eyes.
“What?! No! I mean...” He shook his head, thanking the cashier after, as he grabbed the two cans of coffee. “Wanna sit down for a while? I mean, if you’re not in a hurry that is...”
“So, now YOU are hitting on me?” You folded your arms, grinning.
He finally broke into a laugh. His eyes turned into crescents. “My name’s Jiwon.” He said as he handed you the coffee.
You grabbed the can and told him your name. “I have a day off tomorrow anyway, so... yeah! I don’t mind sitting down for a while.”
“Alright.” He said casually, but immediately stopped his tracks. “Wait, does my name not ring any bell to you?”
“What bell again?” You laughed while pushing the store door open for both of you.
“Forget it.”
“You know what? I like your sense of humor, I think it kinda matches mine!” You laughed again as you sat down. “I like people with dry jokes!”
“Sure.” He laughed too and took the chair next to you. “What do you do anyway?”
“I’ve just graduated from university three months ago, but I decided to take some short course this summer before I jump into the work field.” You explained. “You?”
“I don’t really know if I should tell you what I do for a living...” He chuckled.
You gasped quietly. “Don’t tell me you’re some kind of drug dealer or something???”
He laughed, this time, out loud. “You’re so funny, I swear to God.”
For some odd reason, your heart skipped one beat.
“Don’t avoid the question!” You almost stutter.
“Hmm...” Jiwon rubbed his chin, thinking. “Let’s just say I work in the music industry...”
“Wow!!!” You beamed. “What are you, some kind of music composer? Writer?”
The guy laughed again and shook his head in disbelief. “You could say so.”
“Which entertainment are you working for? SM? No, AOMG? You kinda look like someone who could be friends with Jay Park!” You said excitedly. “Sorry, it’s the caffeine, I get a little too excited sometimes.” You giggled.
“I don’t mind.” Although you couldn’t see his face through the mask, his eyes turned into crescents again. You knew he was smiling. “No, I don’t work for AOMG sadly.”
“What a bummer! I was about to ask you to introduce me to Gray too!!!” You joked.
“You like hiphop?”
“I guess? I never really take too much time to memorize all the artists’ names though.” You shrugged. “The only guys I recalled clearly were Jay Park and Gray, and I guess, those two guys from ikon that I said kinda looked like you earlier.”
He suddenly cleared his throat. “Uh... Enough talking about me, you mentioned about taking a short course?”
“Oh, yeah, I’m taking some digital illustration class around four to five times a week.” You replied excitedly, totally oblivious that the guy you were talking with, was changing the topic.
“Awesome.” He said, amused. “You uh, draw human and stuff? Or just you know, cartoony, or I don’t know... I really don’t know too much about art.” He awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck.
“I’m focusing on fashion illustration, and also some advertising. Occasionally I do paintings too, but that’s just purely to waste some time...”
“Ah, I have a friend who’s super into painting as well!” He said with excitement, that he at least knew something.
“Oh? Do you have their Instagram or something? Can I see their works?”
Jiwon cursed silently. He really did not think the words that escaped his mouth through.
He couldn’t exactly show Mino from Winner’s Instagram account, can’t he?
“Wait... I— Oh, thank the heavens!”
“Huh?”
He took his phone out from his pocket, and swiped through his gallery for a while, before showing it to you.
“He sent this to me a few days ago, it’s his latest and I don’t think he has posted it online yet.”
You took your time to analyze the artwork. “Hmm... he has a very distinct style, it’s colorful yet dark at the same time.” Your eyes were still fixated on the phone. “I like it though, it seems like it has a deeper meaning.”
The lad smiled at you secretly. Admiring how passionate you were talking about art, that made you seem even more attractive.
**
Time passed by so quickly. Both of you were so indulged into the conversation, that was basically pure random talk, that you did not realize that it had been almost three hours since you dropped a can of coffee to the ground, and a stranger with messy hair insisted on buying you another can.
“Whoa! It’s already this late?!” You were shocked when you saw your watch. “Yah, we should probably head back now...”
“Yeah, you’re right.” He sighed. “I have to admit though,”
“Admit what?”
“I kinda don’t want our conversation to end this early... You can say I’m hitting on you all you want!” He giggled.
Another beat was skipped.
“You know what... yeah, it’s mutual!” You giggled too, but a blush crept onto your cheeks without you realizing.
It seemed like he was grinning from eye to eye, you could not really tell because of the mask. Speaking of the mask, he had not been taking them off since you first met him, making you curious of how he would look without it.
“Where do you live? Is it far? I can take you back home if you want.”
“I-It’s okay, I can just take a cab.” Did I just stutter?
“My place is nearby and I don’t mind.” He said, shrugging.
“No really, exactly why I don’t want you to do so.” You refused politely.
“Then I’ll pay for your cab?”
“No, Jiwon... you don’t have to—”
“I insist, again.” He winked.
This time, you were sure your heart was about to stop.
Just the luck, a cab immediately drove by, and he quickly called it. “Give me your number.” He suddenly said.
“I thought you wasn’t going to ask.” You smirked playfully, but deep down, your heart was doing a backflip.
“So I can pay you back on the cab!”
“Does that mean I’ll see you again in the future?” You hummed, liking the idea.
“Yeah...” He folded his arms. “Probably, most probably.”
“Alright.” You cheekily grinned after you typed your number on his phone. “Umm, I’ll see ya?”
“I’ll text you later.” He waved.
The whole trip back to your house, you could not stop smiling to yourself like an idiot. You literally felt like you were a high schooler again. It had been quite some time that you had not met a somewhat “romantic” encounter, if you could call it that.
You were too smitten, that you actually forgot that until you both bid your goodbyes, you still had not see the face behind his mask.
Just a few minutes after you arrived home, with a little unsettled feelings because of the face mask thingy, a notification popped up on your phone.
“Hey! Arrived safely? I forgot to... you know, show you my face today, didn’t I?” Followed by a grinning emoji.
You wasted no time in replying back. “What are you gonna do about it then? Send me a selfie?” You teased.
A minute later, another notification popped up again.
“I hope this doesn’t seem like a catfish lol. You can call me Bobby too, if you want!”
You did not expect him to actually send you a picture.
Nor did you expect him to look that handsome.
Also, you didn’t exactly expect him to be...
ACTUALLY BOBBY FROM iKON???
Bobby is just doing the social distancing y'all, that’s why he didn’t open the mask 😂😂😂
Jokes aside, I hope everyone’s staying safe and healthy. Please don’t just go outside because you’re bored at home like... I’m so sick of those kind of people :(
I hope this story could at least cheer y'all up even just a little bit! <3

Catching Up
@orime-stories and @risualto tagged me in this nice year-recap meme, thanks!
Three Ships:
@bi-stander and I started shipping our ShOH MCs in an AU and now I’m maybe more invested in the two of them than in Lev’s canon romance (I’m so sorry Trouble, ilu but you need to step up your game)
Watcher/Aloth gets the special commendation of being the only ship I’ve written actual content for this year, or any year, really.
Finally, Thanatos/Zagreus from Hades, one because it’s a lovely ship, and two because when I first met Than my reaction was “Hmmm. I think... They should kiss... They’re not going to, because this is an action roguelike and also I still don’t expect queer content from high-profile games like this. But like.... it would be neat. If they did.” And then Supergiant was like “Yea it would be neat. Here you go.” Thank you so much Supergiant I’m so sorry I ever doubted you.
Last songs listened to:
Everything by Seeming, Someday Lily by Seeming, Muscle Memory by Seeming.... There seems to be a pattern developing here.....
Currently watching:
It’s just me and my Polygon Content Background Noise Youtube Playlist against the world, baby.
Currently reading:
River of Stars by Guy Gavriel Kay! I probably did more reading in 2020 than in the three previous years combined, somehow. I think I mostly have my “GGK Quarentine Re-read Project” to thank for that, since it’s given me both a concrete goal to work towards and taken a lot of the decision-making out of figuing out what I want to read. I’m going to take a quick break after River of Stars to read House of Leaves, though, I’ve been in the mood for some good Haunted House content.
How’s it going:
It’s.....certainly going. I spent the first part of the year failing classes as usual (but online this time!) and being generaly miserable about it. All my ttrpg groups had to switch to remote meetings too, which was a bummer, I do so much better with in person sessions : (. BUT once I decided to stop banging my head against the wall trying to make Being In School work for me when it very clearly was not going to and started working towards being able to support myself with my art and my odd job/handyman/heavy-thing lifter/generic helpful person work things have been much much better. It’s still a long term, difficult goal, and kind of scary, but, more importantly, it doesn’t make me hate myself nearly as much as being in school did. Also we got a cat! Things just keep getting better!
Also, like pretty much everyone else Im sure, my online social life has been a huge, wonderful part of this past year! I’ve met so many fantastic people, especially through the Pillars fandom, and have had such a good time talking about these games and picking apart their lore and story.... it’s been really great everyone. ALSO also, shoutout to everyone in the ShOH and Void discords, @tropicrayder, @bimollymauks, @bi-stander again. Y’all should also do this meme, if you like.

Inside a fog
Here’s a little thing I wrote a while back but never posted. It’s pretty much a bummer, set during SV season 5.
--
Since you lost her, you exist inside a fog. Your joy comes from difficult places. It’s been months since you have really seen a bird.
You eke some small pleasure from the words “I find him intimidating.” Words that have never been spoken—not about self-effacing, accommodating Jared! not about you, that is to say—before. It is a novelty, this being feared by someone, and it thrills you the way all new things have. Like telling your first joke (age 19), your first Halloween costume (age 26), the first time you swore in front of someone (age 33, and certain you’d be struck dead on the spot). It feels good, transgressive, dangerous.
It is short-lived, though, this hot spike of joy, alight like a brief candle. Then, back to wringing your delight out of an old, bone-dry dishrag. A taste in your mouth like dirt.
--
“And you are the applicant’s... grandson?”
“No relation,” you amend. “I’m a friend.”
“A friend!” Mr. Dodson chuckles. He leans back in his chair and rests his feet up. Easy, casual. The room reminds you of many others you’ve spent time in: the psych 101 textbooks, generic motivational art, the lovely crocheted doilies. “I’ll be frank with you. We don't get too many of those around here. Friends, I mean. Not lobbying the way you are.”
You see an in here, a sign, something only you might see, something almost imperceptible. “If you'll forgive me, I don't mean to sound too forward, but whatever it takes to get Muriel into your facility... I’ll beg if I have to. It’s just - gosh, you come so highly recommended. If there's anything I could offer. If there's anything I could do. Sir,” you say (you know they like that). “Anything.”
You pause there, feeling foolish, feeling your face flush as it is studied and considered. Perhaps you’ve been too long off the corner, perhaps you’ve gone too far, presumed too much, overlooked some crucial sign or gesture.
Mr. Dodson sets down his clipboard. He reaches a hand up and loosens his bowtie. “You’d beg, huh? You sweet thing.”
Yes, yes. Relief courses through you. So you still know what power looks like, in the hands of a man who would abuse it. At least you have that in your favor.
Muriel wasn’t like the others. She never tried to take anything from you, didn’t want to see you give any more of yourself away. From the moment you met—the lobby at the cardiologist’s office, where she pointed out your copy of the National Audubon Society digest—you and Muriel looked after each other.
She wouldn’t like it, if she knew how it was she got bumped up the waitlist. But do you regret it? No. A part of you has always liked this, and a small part of you likes it now. You like giving. You like sacrifice. You like the rugburn on your knees. Nothing feels quite real until you’ve lost for it.
--
You catch yourself in Richard’s doorway, hanging around, waiting for scraps like a hungry dog under the table where you’re not wanted. How you long to tell him all the things on your mind. To talk about your fears, your dreams, to talk about Muriel, mostly. It’s a disgrace, you know: this selfish impulse to prattle on about yourself. The way you’ve never been able to stop telling these stories. As if sharing fragments of them will somehow make you whole.
You miss her. You miss him. You miss the taste of friendship, savored like chamomile with honey on your lips. You miss being a friend to someone, having something to do with your feelings, a target to focus your friendship on. You miss that maybe most of all.
--
With so little left to love, your love hardens into something harder.
You see Holden across the room. You watch with disdain as he struts around the office, as if he believes it’s already his own. You hate how little he seems to care, how little he has worked or lost for, how little he appreciates the unfathomable opportunity that’s fallen straight into his privileged lap.
This could be your chance: to find out if you have power, if confidence could ever be a color that suits you, in spite of what your fourth grade teacher said. You try them on, the harsh words and withheld compliments. You even put on a splash of the cologne that Gavin wore. The scent turns your stomach. It puts you in the proper mindset.
--
“We’re going to need some additional support staff. At least a couple more folks in operations, marketing, government relations.”
You’ll take care of the interview process, you say. The on-boarding, an extensive, three-day affair you’ve been excitedly planning for weeks now, replete with all the team-building exercises and safe space charades and trust falls usually reserved for your most decadent fantasies. The new hires will report directly to you. That much, at least, you as COO can happily take off your diligent captain’s already over-full plate.
“Yeah, ah. Jared. About that.” Richard glances around the room, careful not to make eye contact, as if he’s searching for an emergency exit, for some sort of shortcut out.
“Yes?” you ask. Sometimes that’s all it takes, you know. A gentle prod. A little course correction. It’s so easy with Richard. You rest your hand on his delicate shoulder and nudge him the right way.
“They - look - the HR department. They said they can't have you involved with all that.”
You laugh—“ha!”—a squawk, joyful and full-throated. “How silly! And what did you tell them? Why on earth would they say a thing like that?”
Richard scratches at his neck. You can sense he’s nervous and, with that, panic begins to rise inside your chest. “There’ve, well. There’ve been complaints. About the way you were with Holden. Jared, you’re just - I’m sorry, man - you’re not a good supervisor. And we’re gonna need to, uh - to keep you away from the new hires.”
Not good. Not good, Donald. You feel the blood in your ears. Your heart hammers. Not good not good not good.
“Are you saying”—you pause here, breathe and swallow, your fingers twitch into a fist—“that indolent - slothful - that Holden issued a complaint against me? Because I swear to god, Richard, I - ”
“No,” Richard says. “Not Holden. I did.”
--
It used to frighten you so, to think that you might become one of them. Perhaps if you let your guard down, failed to be sufficiently vigilant, if you let the darkness creep just a little too far in. You hadn’t meant to do it, not exactly. But perhaps you were always going to do it either way. Violence was a seed planted inside you, putrescent and rotten. Over years and in the thrall of different leaders, it took root. Chipping and chipping away, just as you were chipped and chipped away at, all the wounds and cuts and scrapes. The thing that lived inside you, put there by someone else.
--
Your hand is shaking. Your voice is shaking. You feel your face about to crack in two, in spite of your valiant effort to prevent it. You fall onto your knees, onto the floor in front of Richard. Your soft cheek rests against the rough of Richard’s jeans.
“Oh Richard,” you say, and it feels good, at last, to confess it. “How I resented him! How he got to be close to you when I didn’t. I was so lonely. Muriel, Gloria. Goodness, I missed you so much. I couldn’t bear to see it, how ungrateful he was, how he didn’t even know how lucky he was to serve you!” You sob, miserably, into Richard’s slender thigh.
“You know,” Richard almost laughs, “that’s not what everyone wants here? To ‘serve me’ or whatever, right?” He clambers, indelicately, out of the CEO chair and joins you on the floor.
You feel him draw close. You nod, press your eyelids closed, and await the punishment that must be duly meted. You deserve them now: every back that will turn toward you. And you would almost enjoy it, yes, it might almost feel good, knowing you could spin this—like straw into gold—to be about your grief and then, in turn, punishment for your selfishness.
And do not resent his rebuke, you think.
Your foster mother used to say that.
“Do you see now,” Richard says, “how trying to practice ‘emotional abstinence’ or whatever on me didn’t help? Fuck, Jared. It hurt us.”
“I’m so sorry, Richard.” You wipe your nose, indelicately, on the back of your large, pale hand.
“Jared,” Richard says, and you expect to hear get out of my office, to hear you're fired, to hear you selfish, treacherous, treasonous ingrate, I never want to see you again.
“Can I hug you,” Richard says, instead.
Outside, a bird perches on the windowsill. The fog begins, slowly, to lift.

Alright, this is possibly the biggest bummer of a thing I’ve had to admit to myself, but...
You Might Have a Type, the dating sim, is no longer in development. As in, further development is cancelled.
For those of you new here, a while back (almost two years, yikes!) I started playing around with developing a Dating Sim- in the end (via polls) it was decided the dateable options would be UT Sans, UF Sans, US Sans, and SF Sans.
tl;dr: I have to stop working on YMHaT due to technical, revision, and time struggles. BUT, there’s a browser-playable build of the intro up on Gamejolt! You can’t progress the game, but once the interactive intro is done, you can explore the game area (Grillby’s), talk to at least a few NPCs, and observe the back areas for multiple observation texts.
There’s no ending set, however, so just stop playing when you’re done looking around, and have a bit of patience as occasionally new talksprites take a moment to load.
More info about why I’ve had to let this project go below the cut:
I reworked the project from the ground up no less than three times (even switched entire game engines once) - and finished what should have been 95% of the art. However, I hit more and more problems in development - which I was doing alone. From realizing the ‘story’ wasn’t working, to needing to create much more art to ‘fix’ it (a year after I’d finished the majority of the art, creating style problems to say the least), to realizing the game was lagging upon export no matter what I tried to do to fix it... well, that is what I get for trying to manhandle RPGMaker MV into a different shape. The elements (used a bunch of plugins, along with other tactics) worked independently, and even running in my own environment, but they suffered as soon as I took that away.
In the end, I’ve been doing a lot of introspection and have to admit that having this unfinished project hanging over my head has been severely messing with my creative output. Guilt and worry, personal pressure (the longer I let it sit, the harder it’ll be to fix/copy the previous art style/etc), and just the mental real estate even a semi active project takes had a huge toll. This was supposed to be a fun, free fanproject, but my income is solely commission/art/freelance based- time spent desperately rehashing and working on a free fanproject is a worrying amount of time spent not making money to help make ends meet.
So, though it’s hard to accept I failed on this... I’ve got to throw in the towel. If I want to move forward and make new, cooler things, things that I’ve now got a lot more experience through the struggle of this game to make even better, I have to let this go. It’s obscenely sad, and don’t mind me I’m crying a bit, but! I want to continue having some time for other fanworks - fanart, fanfiction... and YMHaT was just the ball and chain I was only adding more weight onto this whole time.
That said, though I obviously was unable to release a finished version of the game- I have a workable intro, and have put up a browser-playable build! Like I mentioned above, there are those caveats - and seriously, once you’re done exploring, just exit out of the game tab. Nothing more will happen :C
I put a lot of work into this game (hundreds of hours...) so, upon the encouragement of the few friends I opened up to about this, I’m sharing at least this much. That way at the very least, some of the assets can be enjoyed, however briefly, and won’t go to absolute waste. TvT
I’ve certainly learned my lesson, and any future gamework I’ll probably stop trying to bend RPG Maker MV (a perfectly good game engine!) so out of shape to make it do things I should just suck it up and learn how to program in Unity, for example. But yeah, time is unfortunately money, especially for a freelancer, and we’ve all got to hustle, sigh. I just can’t justify sinking another hundred - or likely, two hundred plus - hours into a fanproject that’s already struggling and I can’t make any money off of. I know it sounds cynical, but y’know, thanks capitalism TvT
So, onwards, to new and better projects - I hope to still make a dating sim someday, but I’m afraid that unless I can find some crazy loopholes (or someone wants to drop several, several, several thousands of dollars on me) it probably won’t be a Sans-centric dating sim.
Hope you enjoy the unfinished demo - if you like anything, a comment left there or here would mean the world, so I’m not just chucking all that work completely down the drain ╥﹏╥ cheers to you all (esp those who read all this, wow!) and thanks for the support and interest you had in the project at all. I’m so sorry to let you guys down, but I thank you for the opportunity and damn if I didn’t learn a lot that’ll make me a better creator for the future.
#ymhat dev#no longer to be oTL#ymhat#this was one of the hardest creative decisions i've had to make#i think the technical struggles were the final nail in the coffin honestly - it's laggy even without every ending planned and put in there#i shudder to think of attempting to fix it only to find out 200 hours later that its nigh unplayable#just because assets won't load or the game crashes#sigh#i'm very very sorry everyone for letting you down#i wish i had the time and money to do this but#gods it's just not to be#i've tried very hard to do so but yeah - i just can't justify the sunk cost anymore as much as it breaks my heart#oTL#thank you so much again#for all your support!#i hope you like getting to poke around the unfinished demo#reminder to be patient a bit- give things a chance to load if the assets new#(mostly talk sprites)#(looking at you talks sprites)#(the thing that should be the most straightforward to load....)#ughhh i'm gonna go eat some sadness eggs now#this sucks#sorry again#blrgh#fingers crossed once i shake off the creative misery of abandoning a project you spent a lot of time on#i'll be able to bounce back and be a commission taking wiz and also have more mental space for fanworks!!

Presents. Hyung Line.
Masterlist.
Seokjin
“This is so embarrassing. Alexa, play Embarrassed by BTS,” rang through your mind. Recreating Alexa memes in your head was the least of your problems, in front of the situation you were facing.
Jin had announced that he finally managed to buy one of the action figures, he was after for a while. And now he explained you on the phone, how hard it had been to get it using all of his connections. Listening to his side of the story, everything was fine. More than that, you should be happy for him, he sounded so euphoric.
The only problem was, that you called him to say, that you managed to get the same exact figure as well. Not the fancy way though. You had followed every auction side on the internet, keeping an eye on them, in case someone had the figure you had in mind. And miraculously at the beginning of this week, it had appeared. And so you bid over the piece and won. Or maybe lost, your account was missing a big sum now. It was second hand, but Jin wouldn’t mind, you had thought. All he would use it for was staring at it for a while and wait for it to cover in dust.
“Babe, are you not happy? Don’t repeat your ‘Action figures are useless’ thing again, I’m too happy for that,” Jin said, after you didn't respond to him.
“No, Jin. It’s great news, re-really,” you stuttered, still unsure of what to do.
“But it’s a bummer, that I got just one, you know,” Jin added with a little less excited voice.
“Why? I always tell you not to be greedy, one piece of useless plastic on your shelf is enough, isn’t it?” No matter how confused you were, you couldn’t give up on ranting on him.
“Miss Problematic, I’m thinking about my best friend Namjoons, who happens to miss that one piece in his collection,” he mimicked your annoyed high pitched voice. But you weren’t annoyed anymore. You were blissed. The hundreds of dollars you spent weren’t for the cat, like your one weird German friend always said.
“What will you do, if I solve that problem for you?”
“We did talk about marriage, you are the one opposing it, I’m free this weekend.” Sometimes you regretted joking around him.
“Just make sure you have enough signed albums for me to bribe my colleges, I’ll be fine,” you changed the subject, and explained how you wanted to surprise him with your purchase, but failed, but also not. So he would gift his figure to Namjoon, and gladly accept your gift.
Yoongi
If buying sleep was possible, you would’ve been the first person to do it for him. Or maybe second, because Yoongi would possibly be the first one to do so. He was richer than you after all. Anyways, there was nothing that this boy wished for, as he either didn’t need anything, or was already in possession of it. It didn’t help, that he was quite minimalistic and practical in his way of living. He did smile and shine, when you gifted him decoration and couple items, but now he threatened you with buying you even more useless things in return, like items shown in those tiktok videos. So you were cautious.
“Don’t buy anything,” Yoongi interrupted your whining.
“Because my existence alone is enough right?,” you asked and pretended to vomit on him. He didn’t even react to it.
“Don’t be ridiculous,” this earned him a kick against the shin,”we don’t need to gift each other anymore.” “Whoa, just be honest and confess you are tired of me already,” you acted as if you were hurt by his words. You weren’t. But acting crazy made him react to you sometimes.
“I got an idea, how about you stop acting crazy? Great gift! For like a week or so?” Like you hoped, he entirely turned into your direction and tried to act all serious.
“So you can get bored even more? No I can’t risk that.” You sticked out your tongue. Only Yoongi could sit there and try to analyze your behavior like this. He didn’t label you as just plainly crazy, but tried to understand why you did this. After a long staring contest, he finally clapped his hands and turned back to the notebook in front of him.
“You already have a present, that’s why you are so bratty,” he said calmly.
“Is it because you’re a pisces? How do you always know, I don’t like that.” “Bring out the gift, so you can relax.” And with huffing and puffing you stood up and walked to your bag. Like he guessed, you already had his gift, you just wanted to annoy him a bit.Even though it never worked the way you hoped.
“Here,” you said and put the package under his nose.
“My girl is so mindful, how did you know I ran out of it?,” he asked, picking up his favorite perfume out of the box.
“I’m not, you were beginning to stink, that’s it,” you lied.
“Thank you, then? And you are welcome, for not stinking anymore?,” he said a little unsure.
Hoseok
It was easy to make Hoseok gifts. Get into mall, look out for the most expensive store and find the most expensive thing. Easy for the brain, a little hard for the wallet. But it’s fine. You reduced situations for gifting each other down to birthdays. It was fine to spent hundreds once a year. That’s what you told yourself.
The other way around, Hoseok was struggling enormously. To be fair, he had the money, but the ideas were missing. There was no brand you liked (you cursed way too many times about those capitalists, which included Hoseok sometimes), and you looked like you had everything you needed. In Hoseok’s eyes, it was never wrong to have far more than what you needed, but he didn’t want to buy you things that would age in the corner of your room.
“Just buy her something she mentioned before,” Jimin suggested,”exchange lists of what you want or something.”
“Is that what you do with your girlfriend?,” Hoseok asked confused.
“Yea, so we both can be happy,” Jimin answered.
“But aren’t surprises more fun though?,” Seokjin added.
“Don’t start with that shit, Hyung. Not only did your girl get you something you bought for yourself, but you did the same thing for her as well,” Hoseok said, not sure why he was asking his members for advice.
“That’s called fate and love, we just know each other too well,” Jin rolled his eyes at Hoseok.
“I thought about make-up? Or clothes, she rarely has time to go shopping,” Hoseok voiced some of his ideas.
“Please, she will say ‘Am I not pretty, do you want me to change?’ if you turn up with those things,” Yoongi said.
“Hyung, sorry but you are the only one dating a psycho,” Hoseok said.
“But Yoongi is right though, make-up and clothes are risky, one for her reaction but also you can’t match her taste 100% with those things,” Jin argued.
“Ah! I’ll gift a coupon, a shopping spree with me and I’m buying everything! What about that?,” Hoseok asked his members enthusiasticly.
“It’s pretty close to my idea, so I like it!,” Jimin said, and the others agreed as well.
Namjoon
Namjoon had animals, stars, parts of the moon, trees, hell even whole forests dedicated to him. So maybe some of the oxygen you breathed was his. How could you top that? How could you find better gifts for his birthday, when that boy literally owned parts of the universe? Of course, he had things he was passionate about, things he collected and bought. You couldn’t buy him a whole museum, neither a collector’s piece nor real paintings. But you hoped, that maybe if you created something, maybe he would love it like art on display.
So operation ‘Learn how to get into pottery and create an acceptable tea pot’ began two weeks before your anniversary. Not that Namjoon was a tea person, but he was a person with baby shoes in his studio. That boy only cared for aesthetics.
And you learned how to be patient with your untalented hands, started growing muscles, and finally created the most asymmetrical tea pot the world had seen. The artsy type of asymmetrical though. And it definitely had character, you like the plain design, and the gold accents you had added to cover up some uneven parts.
“Babe, this is gorgeous!,” Namjoon said, confirming that you did choose well.
“I’m happy you like it,” you responded, overly confident with how the pot turned out.
“I didn’t know you could do something like this, babe. It will look great in the studio.”
“How did you know I made it?,” you asked Namjoon, clearly with less confidence than earlier. Because you had thought about selling it as an artist piece, like that’s how pleased you were with the tea pot.
Noticing the shift in your mood, Namjoon was confused.
“Is it ugly?,” you asked, when he didn’t respond.
“I told you, it looks amazing! It’s missing-”
“It’s missing what?,” you interrupted.
“It’s missing a logo at the bottom, babe! Don’t be overdramatic!,” Namjoon laughed.

75, Izuku and Kaminari, angst? It might be a weird combo idk.
this was a really fun combo to write!! i haven’t written much kaminari before, so i hope i did him justice!
Prompt #75 - Can I be alone right now?
read on AO3 - request a prompt and character(s) for me to write!
Izuku would like to think that he had a pretty good grasp on the characters that made up his class, thank you very much. Not even a year had passed since they had started here, at U.A, and Izuku would be proud to call the nineteen other members of his class his friends.
Aside from the boy being very knowledgeable in all of their quirks (although this was not something he liked admitting out loud), but he figured he knew a great deal about the individual hobbies his classmates took on, or other little quirky things about them others might not notice.
He knew that Iida always set aside an hour for reading every day, except Sunday’s where he did two. He knew Uraraka, despite her money issues, often liked to partake in homemade craft, often using disposable items that people were about to recycle. He knew that Asui (no, Tsu, he reminded himself) had a collection of pebbles and small rocks in her room, some she had been holding onto since she was a small child with a variety of colors, sizes and shapes.
Kirishima often liked to make his own little wooden figurines that he painted as gifts, thanks to his quirks. Ashido was amazingly good at cooking spicy foods, sometimes even managing to rival Kacchan. Tokoyami would take any sweaters or jumpers that somehow got left in the common room, ’borrowing’ them in his room for the time being and Jirou seemed to, surprisingly, be a big fan of classical and orchestral music. Yaoyorozu and Kouda seemed to both be fans of writing and drawing, respectively.
Last he knew, the latter two were trying to work together and make a short story about their classmates, which he honestly couldn’t wait to see.
But yes, Izuku would say that he knew all of his classmates fairly well - even Kacchan, as hostile as ever, seemed to have a fascination in reptiles of all creatures, and was currently set on getting permission from Mr. Aizawa to bring one to the dorms.
The boy didn’t know if this was normal or not…after all, before coming to U.A, he hadn’t had many, if any friends at all, reluctant to even consider that Kacchan so close…so can you really blame him, wanting to know everything he could about his classmates?
But if he was being honest…there was one classmate who despite all of this, and despite his own outwardly demeanor…Izuku had to admit that he knew the least about this particular student.
And it wasn’t that he wasn’t observing the other - it was quite the opposite, really. It just appeared that the student, Kaminari, knew how to hide his interests extremely well. It wasn’t something one would call the electricity-quirked user - secretive.
But…Izuku didn’t know what else to put to the other boy. Maybe he was just really shy with whatever it was that he liked doing? But surely he knew none of the class would laugh or make fun of him…
Not to mention that he wasn’t exactly the closest with the blond - who was usually a member of Kacchan’s small group, and the thought of asking the explosive blond leader was out of the question. Kacchan would tell him…but in his own loud, profanity-filled Kacchan-esque way.
No, if Izuku wanted to get closer to another classmate, this was the perfect opportunity. This was his chance.
And Izuku might not be the best when it came to socializing and getting together with others…but surely it couldn’t be that hard, right?
—–
"Ah, Kaminari!!“
Izuku had waited until the following Monday, carefully keeping an eye on the blond as the group finished their classes for the day, waiting until they all got back to the dorms before he decided to approach the other with a raised hand and a light call. The boy startled out of whatever conversation he’d been having with Mineta, and Izuku only felt a little bad.
Judging by the blush and slight nosebleed on Mineta’s face, he should give himself a bigger pat on the back for stopping wherever that talk had been heading.
"Midoriya?”
The other hero-in-training looked confused, and Izuku couldn’t really blame him - neither went out of their way that much to talk about one another. Izuku could only smile sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Ah, it’s about the English assignment we got today…I know you’re pretty good with English, and Todoroki’s not available to help out today…mind if we maybe work out the assignment together?”
Kaminari looked shocked, as if he’d literally shocked himself with his own quirk. “You want me…to help you?”
In retrospect, maybe it wasn’t the best excuse…but Izuku wasn’t exactly lying either. His English could be downright awful at times. Even with his admiration of All Might…it left him with something less than desired.
"I…I don’t think I could really be that helpful, eh? I’d just be distraction…“
Izuku refused to back down, "Think about it, Kaminari– you say you always have trouble writing it all down, right? We can help each other…I could even give you some notes on our Maths and Art classes-”
Kaminari moved in the blink of an eye, snatching Izuku’s arms. “Why didn’t you say anything before?! Man, not that I appreciate help from Kacchan, but he can be a reaaaal bummer!”
Izuku smiled at the use of his childhood friend’s nickname, letting the other teen start to drag him along towards the elevators. “So I take that as a yes?”
“Totally!! Oh, dude, we’re gonna have soo much fun!” It seemed as if Kaminari forgot the whole reason they were doing this already, “We’ll go to my room…no offence, but studying and doing homework, All Might watching me from every corner? A real creepy vibe, dude.”
"Haha, yeah…….wait, what?“
—–
"Just throw your stuff wherever ya need to, bro!”
Izuku had seen the blond’s room once - when they had first moved in. He’d been…surprised, sure, by the others taste. But this…
“What an…interesting set up…”
Izuku had no clue where to look first. Kaminari just grinned, trotting right in and all but dumping his schoolbag onto the small table in the middle of the room, books spilling out as he searched through to find his English book.
And that’s when Izuku saw it.
A small notebook slid out, falling off the edge and landing on the floor with a quiet thump. Kaminari, too engrossed in finding the correct schoolwork, didn’t notice as Izuku walked over, picking up the notebook carefully in both hands.
It seemed to be about the same size as most of his quirk analysis notebooks…and it seemed extremely worn out, like it had been used a lot. On the front, in big kanji, was just one word that make the unruly-haired teen’s eyes lighten up in excitement.
‘QUIRKS’
Ehhh?! Kaminari keeps a book on quirks?! I mean, I guess it could be anything really…maybe he just thinks of quirks that would be cool to have? Or maybe…
“Hey, Kaminari? I never knew you were one for liking to know things about quirks!” Izuku proclaimed, waving the book around shyly with a hand as the blond’s head whipped up to look at him with wide eyes. Izuku just grinned, turning the notebook over in his hands, almost admiring it. “We should compare notes sometime! It’d be interesting to see how different or alike our notes could be…do you keep updated on heroes or just the class?”
As Izuku spoke excitedly, his scarred fingers began to open the cover of the book. He had no time to react to what came next. As fast as a snake striking, Kaminari’s hand grabbed onto Izuku’s wrist, squeezing tightly as the other hand grasped the book, snatching it out of Izuku’s own.
All Izuku could do was give some sort of yelp of surprise, yanking his hand back hard enough to almost stumble the other teen with his eyes wide.
A throbbing pain started in Izuku’s wrist, and he hissed, covering it with his free hand. “What was that for?”
The One for All user hadn’t seen how Kaminari’s face darkened, snapping back. “You shouldn’t open up other people’s stuff, Midoriya.”
Izuku had never heard as much malice in the others tone, and even Kaminari seemed caught off guard, taking a step back. “Holy crap dude, I didn’t mean to snap!” he murmured apologetically, keeping his distance as he set the notebook aside on his shelf. “Really, I was way out of line…my notes aren’t any good though, sorry to grab you like that. Is your wrist alright?”
“Ah…yeah, it’s ok…” Izuku mumbled , stretching his fingers before looking at the boy who’d lashed out. “It should be fine.”
“Let me go get you an ice pack from downstairs!” Kaminari insisted, hurrying towards his door. “We can compare notes when I get back, if you’re still up for it?”
“…sure.”
Izuku didn’t like the unease crawling in his gut, listening halfheartedly as the other told him to sit down and wait before dashing out. Izuku’s free hand tentatively rubbed at his sore wrist, frowning slightly at the force his classmate had decided to use.
Man, I mean, he’s right…but I’ve never seen Kaminari react like that before, and I know he tends to let other people get way closer than that…
An uneasy thought nagged at him, suggesting that perhaps the other had been hiding something within the notebooks contents - but Izuku decided to push that away with a shake of his head. This was Kaminari, after all, one of the nicest people in the class! Surely he, of all people, wasn’t hiding anything to warrant that kind of reaction…
But…
Izuku found himself carefully, quietly heading to the very same shelf Kaminari had put the notebook in the middle of the conflict, only hesitating for a few moments before he reached out, taking the item and sighing softly.
This feels really bad but…I feel like something’s…
Izuku couldn’t really put his finger on the unnatural, bad feeling about it all.
He opened the book–
only for the first page to be empty.
Frowning, Izuku flipped through the next five, that were equally as blank, and stopped for a moment, eyes raking down the page critically.
Is it invisible ink maybe? Or maybe he hasn’t even written anything…
But the hero student flipped to the next page, and his throat ran dry. For this page was full…very full. He nearly dropped it, green eyes frantically scanning the pages.
His stomach crawled as he read the information on the page.
Name: Aoyama Yuuga (Hero Name: Can’t Stop Twinkling)
D.O.B: 30/5/2XXX
Quirk: Naval Laser
Strengths: Able to shoot out laser in various spots with hero costume. Hyper-aware of surroundings. Able to bend his own light in various shapes. His quirk is exceptionally powerful on its own, and he has deadly accurate aim.
Weaknesses: Stomach hurts after using quirk at full-blast for 10-20 seconds. Has a bit of an ego. Body isn’t very adaptable to his quirk without his belt. Seems to be the odd one out in the class, and acts strangely around them - stands out.
Aoyama seems to think extremely highly of himself, and it would be quite easy to go under the guise of a fan of his, or even a civilian asking about what he calls his “fashion sense”. He loves anything related to France, as well as cheese. Not terribly too smart, but not one you would want to mess with, either. Has not yet trained himself in much when it comes to hand-to-hand or quirkless battling, and being hit with his quirk isn’t an option. Close range battling is best for taking him out.
Rating: 1/5. Body is too unstable to use for different quirks - however his quirk, with the right base, would be acceptable for H.E.N Project #021
and that wasn’t all - in any clear space were pictures of the boy himself in all his glory, for once unaware a photo had been taken. There was also a picture taken of the boys hero costume, little bits of writing detailing every part, and even where he would be most vulnerable to strike.
On the next page stated more information about the other blond in their class - his birthplace, current address, and even the basic information about his immediate family - and their quirks, too!
What the hell is all of this…? And this H.E.N Project…
Izuku wanted to put the book down and leave, feeling a chill go down his spine…but the boy kept going, flicking through the pages and feeling his stomach sink even lower with every filled page he came across.

and finally,
Midoriya Izuku
Izuku didn’t know how long he had been sitting there, staring at the bottom of Kacchan’s final page before turning it to his own, not sure what he was suppose to be expecting. Well, what he had been expecting, at the least, was writing about as detailed as all his other classmates.
But how wrong he was.
Kaminari’s assessment on him didn’t only have pictures on the hero student himself - no. There were pictures of several others - heroes.
All Might and Gran Torino.
Izuku’s heart sped up, all air leaving his lungs when he also noticed older photos - not of him, but of an younger Gran Torino, of a younger All Might.
Of Shimura Nana. All Might’s mentor.
Izuku’s hands shook as he finally read the information listed, although his green eyes only stuck to one very specific part, one that just about sent the boy into pure terror at the thought of being found out.
Quirk: One for All.
Counterpart to All for One. One for All allows Midoriya to have access to immense speed and strength. He is currently the ninth holder, inheriting the quirk from All Might, and is likely being trained to be the next Symbol of Peace. One for All grows as the holder grows and mends with the quirk themselves, meaning that Midoriya’s output will eventually be much stronger than that of All Might in his prime. It also appears that One for All can influence the user whenever stuck under any quirks that capture their mind, or force them to go against their will. One for All is not able to be stolen, and can only be passed with the holder’s permission. This quirk can cause dreams forced by those previous, some of which can cause the quirk to lash out violently whilst the current user is sleeping.
No…no way…Kaminari…
He know’s about One for All!
Izuku slammed the book shut, putting the book back where he found it as he stumbled back, eyes wide and body almost trembling. His hands found their way to the straps of his backpack, clutching tightly.
He knows about One for All…I know I’ve almost spilled it a couple of times, but there can’t be any way he could’ve heard one of my talks with All Might, or even Kacchan…No one else would’ve told him. No one else knew the secret and Kaminari well enough to talk about it, especially not to his face! What the heck am I suppose to tell All Might?!
…..
Unless…
All for One.
It felt as if cold water had been thrown over Izuku at the suggestion conquered up…logically, there was no other way the electric quirked boy knew but…
Kaminari…working with All for One? The League of Villains…?
…it all made too much sense. The attacks. The camp. Kacchan’s kidnapping and Kamino…everything.
He felt sick. Emotions coiled and squeezed at his insides, as if stones were weighing him down under water, and Izuku wasn’t aware of how hard he had been biting his lip, the coppery iron taste of blood filling his mouth. His face paled at what exactly he was accusing the other boy of.
Of being a traitor…
I have to go…I can’t be here, it’s too dangerous–
He couldn’t take the book with him. It would arouse too much suspicion. Izuku turned his back on the notebook, hurrying to the door, which Kaminari hadn’t closed behind him. But just before he got out to the hallway–
“Midoriya? Dude, you alright? You’re looking kinda pale there.”
Izuku jumped almost several feet in the air, whipping around in fright as Kaminari appeared at the other end of the hallway, coming to meet him with an ice pack in one hand. The One for All user couldn’t help but step back, earning a puzzled look from the blond.
“Midoriya…?”
“A-Ah, sorry Kaminari…something came up,” Izuku couldn’t stop the stutter in his voice, pulling on his bag straps and forcing a wane smile across his face in an attempt to convince the other. “My, uh, my mum called me. Something happened at home and I– I just really gotta go and sort this out, you know? I need to…can I be alone right now?”
Izuku’s gaze averted to the carpet hallway flooring, toeing at the material before he made to go around Kaminari, giving him another uncertain smile. “Thanks for the ice pack, but my wrist barely hurts–”
"Midoriya.“
Izuku blinked, and Kaminari went on the offensive. With his quirk crackling around his fingers, the blond had struck out, slamming a hand on Izuku’s chest and letting loose. All in time that was not enough for the target to react as the taller boys quirk reacted immediately, striking out.
The electricity ran its course through Izuku’s veins, setting them alight in fiery pain as he let out a shriek - one that Kaminari quickly covered up with his other hand, dropping the ice pack. Izuku’s legs gave way as the shocks zapped and crackled across his entire body, limbs locking up with Izuku’s mouth gaping open. His throat closed over, stopping any oxygen.
With a vision swimming of black and white, Izuku tried to give out a weak cry, doing his best to fight off the unconsciousness that threatened to submerge him. The sting of copper filled the back of his mouth, and Kaminari crouched besides the fallen boy, golden eyes watching him like a predator.
Kaminari, hair standing up due to the voltage of his quirk, only gave a sickly sweet smile at his classmates predicament, going to pat the cheek of the freckled boy. His voice was muffled, but Izuku could still hear him. Hear the calmness cold that took over the others tone.
"If only you had kept your hands to yourself, Deku…what a naive little hero wannabe.”
No…I can’t…All Might!! Someone…!
But the downed boy couldn’t move his mouth, his tongue as heavy as led, and the student above him sighed.
“I kinda liked your work ethic, ya know? But, well…all good things gotta come to an end, right?”
And that was the last thing Izuku heard, his body finally going into shutdown and static filling his eardrums, the unconsciousness gripping him and dragging him into the void with its deathly claws, claiming its prize.
Kaminari scowled at the now knocked-out boy, scoffing as he got up and nudged the smaller boy’s face with his foot. What an idiot.
He quickly looked, making sure no one was entering the floor nor leaving their rooms before he grabbed hold of one of Izuku’s arms, dragging him into his room and shutting the door behind him.
“That was easier than I thought…”
Dragging him across the floor, Kaminari quickly found some rope he had stored away to tie and bound the others arms and legs, shoving him all too roughly into his closet before fishing his phone out of his pocket.
The number he dialed he practically knew off by heart, and he was sure to send a password via text so that the receiver knew it was in fact him.
The phone rung three times before being picked up.
“You better have a good reason for calling, kid.”
Kaminari couldn’t help the grin that spread across his features. The giddiness that filled his being, almost wanting to make the boy prance around his room in delight.
“Dr. Tsubasa, I got him. Midoriya Izuku is ready for transport to your facility.”

Transferred (5)
Miraculous Whine and Cheese Club
---
After a couple days Marinette was finding herself well accommodated to her new school. She kinda knew where she was going from class to class, and had some nice new friends. Nanette and Quinn had basically adopted her and Kagami was always there with an open seat in classes. She had a routine which made everything easier to digest.
Wake up, go to school, hang out with friends, go home, have dinner, do homework, text Adrien, go to sleep.
That was another thing. Adrien and Marinette hadn’t seen one another since she transferred schools but they texted every night now. Usually about how their day had been. Small talk and dumb jokes. It was nice. Talking to him before she fell asleep was a perfect way to end her night.
This night was no exception. Marinette’s phone pinged with a new message from Adrien.
Do you wanna grab lunch tomorrow?
Her heart sped a little at the thought of seeing him again after so long apart.
Sounds great!
Marinette responded.
Great! Where do you wanna go?
My friend Nanette’s parents own a cute little cafe halfway between the schools. The Winking Violet. Sound good?
Sounds perfect! See you there!
Goodnight, Adrien
Goodnight, Marinette
Marinette let herself a small squee of joy before plugging her phone in to charge and going to sleep.
The next day Marinette headed over to the cafe. Nanette’s moms, whom Marinette had gotten to see a lot of these past couple days, saved a nice table inside. It was raining so the outdoor seating was closed which was a shame since it was great for people watching.
“Marinette?” Marinette looked up to see Aurore. “Hi, I thought that was you.”
“Hi, Aurore, what are you doing here?” she asked.
“Looking for a part-time job. No one is hiring weather girls so I thought I’d try my hand at waitressing.” Aurore shrugged, “What are you doing here?”
“Getting lunch with Adrien. Did you want to join us?” Marinette offered.
“I don’t want to intrude on your date.”
“It’s not a date. We’re just catching up.” Marinette’s face lit up with the mention of the word ‘date’. “I haven’t seen him since I transferred. I haven’t really talked to you either so I’d rather like it if you stayed.”
“Well…” Aurore looked out at the downpour before pulling up a chair at the little glass table. “I have missed you.”
The girls got to talking and were sipping some warm tea when Adrien finally showed up. “Sorry I’m late. It took me forever to convince father to let me come out for lunch.”
“No problem, Aurore’s been keeping me company.” Marientte nodded to their companion.
“Hey Adrien, I know I wasn’t invited--”
“You’re fine. It’s nice to see you outside of school.” Adrien assured her before sitting down and ordering a hot chocolate. This was turning out to be a better afternoon than Marinette pictured. Good company and a warm drink to sip while the rain pattered outside. It was so cozy.
After they exchanged the usual pleasantries and ordered their food they started to get into the real meat of the afternoon.
“How is your new school?” Aurore asked Marinette.
“Great. The people I’ve met are really nice and the teachers are first rate. Also, no Lila. It’s probably one of the best things to ever happen to me.” Marinette responded through bites of her sandwich.
“UUUUUGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!” Adrien threw his head back as he let out a long groan. It would have been funny if not for the multiple heads that swiveled their way.
“What’s going on with him?” Marinette whispered to Aurore.
“Oh, Lila has been dogging his heels ever since you left.” Aurore frowned, “He’s not too happy about it.”
“Oof.” Marinette looked back at Adrien, “How bad has it been?”
“I am trying to be the better person but I cannot keep it up.” Adrien grumbled. “It’s like since you left she thinks she has free reins to do as she pleases. She has practically taken over the school with her lies. She got the seating chart rearranged in class and now I’m stuck next to her in the front row because she convinced Nino to sit behind me with Alya.”
“I am so sorry for you.” Marinette couldn’t imagine the horror going on back at Dupont if Lila was uninhibited. “What else has she done?”
The next half hour was a well needed venting session from Adrien about all the crap Lila had been getting up to since Marinette’s departure. Her lies had somehow gotten even more ludicrous but everyone was stilling buying into them. With some help from Alya, and a lie about being Prince Ali’s go to for second opinions on political decisions, she had taken Marinette’s former position as class president. Not only was she gluing herself to Adrien’s side at every chance she was also furthering her efforts to paint Marinette as a monster. Even after she left she wasn’t done. She wanted to make sure that absolutely no one at Francoise Dupont had any sympathy for Marinette Dupain-Cheng.
First it was that Marinette was using subtle cheats and glitches to make herself a better gamer and not playing fairly in the school gaming tournament months prior. Then it was that she had stolen her derby hat design from a sketch of Lila’s. None of which Lila would even be able to justify because she hadn’t even joined the school at that point! She was just looking for documented cases of Marinette’s accomplishments and trying to debunk them. And the class apparently will just take her word for it because who else would be a good judge of those accomplishments? People who were actually there? Ha!
“Wow.” Marinette sat back and stared at the boy across from her, “You really needed that didn’t you?”
“It has been a long week, Marinette,” Adrien laid his head down on the table, “I am so tired.”
“There there,” Aurore gave his head a pat, “Rest easy sweet prince.”
“It sounds like Lila is on cloud nine.” Marinette muttered into her tea.
“She’s the only one,” Adrien said, his head still on the table, “The rest of the school has been really subdued lately.”
“What do you mean?”
“I’ve noticed it too.” Aurore said, “Everyone looks like they’re running on auto-pilot. There’s no life or excitement in anything they do anymore. Even when they’re talking about something fun.”
“I don’t get it.”
“Neither do I,” Aurore pushed her salad around in her bowl, “It’s kinda sad really.”
“It’s because Lila drove out our purveyor of optimism and happiness.” Adrien flashed Marinette his big, sad, green eyes. “You can really feel your absence at school.”
“You’re saying that to make me feel better.” Marinette told him.
“I’m serious. Ever since you left everyone has been either on edge or too tired to care about anything. Just the other day Kim and Max got into a yelling match in the main hall. Ivan and Mylene have practically turned into the couple that stand next to one another but never speak. Marc stopped coming to art class and hasn’t said a word to Nathaneal either. It is the saddest kind of surrealism.”
“You can’t blame all of that on me leaving. It’s getting colder, weather is getting worse, people fall into seasonal funks.” Marinette tried to explain it away.
“Really? You think it is a coincidence that everyone suddenly got worse when you weren’t there? I always said you were our everyday Ladybug and now I’m sure of it. You bring happiness and luck wherever you go. We were lucky to have you in our class. Now that you’re gone it’s like a year’s worth of karma is coming back to haunt us.” Adrien shuddered. “I think it can only get worse.”
“Aurore, tell him he’s being overdramatic.” Marinette rolled her eyes but she was secretly pleased the with the praise.
“No can do. The boy is right.” Aurore said, “You left and you took the class’ morale with you.”
“What about Chloe?” Marinette asked.
“What about her?”
“Chloe knows that Lila is a liar and we all know Chloe isn’t one to take things lying down. I refuse to believe Lila has gotten complete control over the school with Chloe there to butt heads with. What has she been doing?” Adrien and Aurore looked at one another. They hadn’t thought about this. Chloe fought everyone at pretty much every opportunity. Now that she had a new opponent, and Marinette’s blessing to be ruthless with said opponent, why had things gotten so out of control?
“She’s your friend, Agreste.” Aurore leaned back in her chair, “What’s Queen Bee been up to?”
“Chloe…” Adrien sat back and thought about it, “She’s been quiet, actually.”
“Seriously?”
“I mean she’s just been going about the day like everyone else. Not challenging Lila or getting into petty fights with the others. It’s really weird now that I think about it.” Adrien pulled out his phone and scrolled through his messages. “The last time she messaged me was three days ago. I get texts from her everyday. That’s not right.”
“Do you think she’s fallen into that depression you say the rest of the class is in?” Marinette couldn’t believe her ears. Chloe ‘I’m-the-daughter-of-the-mayor-so-you-must-obey-me’ Bourgeois, was being an amicable classmate?
“No, I think she’s the only one that looks like she’s there for a reason. Everyone else has that aura of, have to be there, surrounding them. Chloe...has energy in her deference. I can’t explain it. It’s like she’s flying under the radar for no reason.”
“Huh,” The three teenagers decided to stop moping about Lila and how much of a bummer Francois Dupont had become and moved onto happier conversation. Mainly it centered around Marinette regaling them with her time at her new school and funny moments from her new friends.
All in all it was a pretty good afternoon.
“I gotta get going,” Aurore stood up, “it was great seeing you again, Marinette.”
“You too, we should find a day to get together again.” Marinette smiled.
“Totally. See you at school, Adrien.” With that Aurore was gone.
“I should be heading back too. I have some catch up work I need to get done.” Marinette pushed her chair in.
“I’ll walk you home.” Adrien opened the door for her.
Thankfully the rain had stopped. The streets had that fresh rain smell and little puddles dotting the pavement that Marinette had to resist the urge to jump in.
"We should do this again." Adrien said, "I miss seeing you every day."
"Yeah?" Marinette felt herself blush once more.
"Yeah," was she delusional or was Adrien blushing too? "I--"
"MARINETTE!"
The next moment a blur of bright pink had tackled her to the ground.
"Oof," Marinette wheezed, "Nanette, I can't breathe."
"Sorry." Nanette stood up, "My mom told me you were in the cafe but I was in the middle of a painting and by the time I found a stopping point you were gone and--holy crap Adrien Agreste!"
"Are you okay?" Adrien helped Marinette up.
"Yep. I've taken harder falls than that." She brushed herself off, "Adrien this is Nanette. Nanette this Adrien."
"Nice to meet you." Adrien smiled at Nanette.
"You too. Marinette wasn't kidding when she said she knew you."
"Um, Nani," Marinette poked her, "You have paint all over you."
"And?"
Marinette pointed to her blouse now stained with green and blue streaks. "It's still wet."
"Oh no! I'm so sorry!" Nanette blanched, “I didn’t even think of that!”
“It’s okay. It’s just a little paint.” Marinette assured her. “Actually, I think this is a good excuse to try my hand at hand painting clothing. Maybe give it a water flower design.”
“I’ve done that before.” Nanette said, “I made Quinn a scarf for their birthday once and they loved it. If you want you can come back to my place and work there. I have every color of the rainbow in paint and a killer sound system we can jam to while working.”
“I would love to but I really do need to get home. Tomorrow maybe?” Marinette hated to disappoint her.
“No problem.” She shrugged, “I should let you two continue on your way. It was nice meeting you, Adrien. Marinette talks a lot about you.”
“Nanette!” shrieked through clenched teeth.
“She likes you a lot.”
“That’s good to hear. It would be awkward if she didn’t.” Adrien said placing a hand on Marinette’s shoulder.
Marinette didn’t hold out too much hope for his words to mean anything more than liking her as a friend. She loves Adrien but if she was being honest the boy is either too infatuated with Kagami to consider anyone else an option or he’s is really that dense about picking up hints. The only way she could be more blatant about her crush was if she told him she dreamed about marrying him one day.
“AWE!” Nanette gushed, “You two are so cute. Okay, I’ll let you go. Sorry for tackling your girlfriend, Adrien.”
“NANETTE!” Marinette was going to collapse into a puddle of anxiety, “He’s not my--”
“I’ll text you later!” Nanette shouted over her shoulder as she hustled back down the street.
“One of your new friends?” Adrien chuckled unperturbed by Nanette’s comment.
“Yeah, she’s...eccentric.”
“I like her hair. If I was a braver sort I would dye my hair something crazy like that.” Adrien ruffled his golden locks, “You think I could pull off pink hair?”
“I think you could pull off anything.” Marinette answered honestly.
“Even crocs?” he raised an eyebrow at her.
She imagined a pink haired Adrien wearing matching bright pink crocs. Amusing but not great. She shook her head. “Hair? Yes. Crocs? No. No one can. Nope.”
“You said--”
“I don’t care if you are Aphrodite incarnate, no one can pull off crocs! It is a comfort shoe meant to not see the light of day!”
“I’m getting you a pair for Christmas now.”
“I think if you were to spend those big boy model checks on something as abhorrent as crocs your dad would disown you on behalf of the fashion world.”
“Still failing to see a downside.”
“You little,” Marinette smacked his arm and they continued on their way to her house. “At the very least Lila may stop bothering you if you wore them to school.”
“Now I have to get a pair and test that theory.”
“She’s really gotten that bad?”
“You are super lucky that you got out when you did. Homeschooling is looking like the better option nowadays.”
“It’ll get better. For your sake I hope it does.”
“Thanks. I hope so too.” they made it to Marinette’s house and said their goodbyes. Marinette said hello to her parents before shutting herself in her room and changing out of her stained shirt. She set it aside to work on later and went to check her instagram. She scrolled through some pictures of her old friends hanging out. She hadn’t the heart to unfollow any of them yet.
Curious about Adrien’s past statement she went to Chloe’s page. Wow. Adrien wasn’t kidding. Chloe hasn’t posted anything on her social media in days. As someone who flooded her timeline with selfies and designer endorsements this was really weird. The last selfie she posted was her wearing a trilby and holding a magnifying glass up to her eye. The caption read: Detective Bourgeois and the case of Dolos and Aletheia.
What is up with her?

Like it or Not-Chapter 27
I’m so tired I’ll format this in the morning, just know that happy purple eyeshadow Virgil single handedly resurrected this story. (/j)
TW: Referenced self harm
“Happy Halloween,” Virgil says.
Logan narrows his eyes as his friend sits down. “It is October first.”
“Fine. Happy Halloween first.”
“Ah, I take it you’re a fan of the holiday?”
“Obviously. It matches the aesthetic. Plus the spooky stories, the intense costumes, the haunted houses-”
“The candy,” Logan deadpans. They both know what he means by that.
“Okay, so in past years it’s turned into kind of a bummer, but still.” Virgil shrugs, “Well, you’re here and you don’t look dead, I’m guessing talking to your dad went well?”
“That is debatable, but he’s letting me continue therapy.”
“That’s good, did you talk to him?”
“He just...came home and said he changed his mind.”
“Just like that? You didn’t even have to talk to him?”
“No. But if I ever do need to talk to him it’s not going to go well.”
“What makes you say that?”
“The one time I tell him about my disorders, about my suffering, he just decides to get rid of my one resource? I can’t exactly trust him after that.”
“Well….”
Logan raises an eyebrow, “Would you?”
“No,” Virgil says, “I wouldn’t. And I can’t blame you for not.”
Before Logan can say anything, their teacher walks to the front of the room.
“As you all know,” Mrs. Spencer starts, “We’re starting our new chapters on creative writing.” That gets varying reactions. Some kids groan, others lean further forward. “The first thing I want you to do is to take a Halloween monster, it can be one you make or a classic, and write a poem about it.”
“A poem?” a boy near the front sneers.
“Yes, a poem,” Mrs. Spencer levels her student with a stare. “We’ll be covering several forms of poetry-haikus, sonnets, slam poems, etcetera. But to begin, I just want you to write whatever you feel comfortable with. So, I am going to leave you guys to free write. Remember to keep talking to a minimum, and if you need to research, the computers are in the back.”
Her students start shifting, getting out pens and pencils and pieces of paper. Some immediately start writing, picking their favorite classic monster from childhood, while others gravitate towards the back of the class, where the computers are. Logan frowns deeply, before scribbling a few notes in his notebook. He goes to the bookcase where several classics are lined up alphabetically in the back and reaches up towards the top.
Virgil looks over at the book. Frankenstein. “I didn’t take you for a zombie person.”
“Not for the zombies,” Logan says, “For the history. The invention of science fiction, created by a woman. Besides, the real monster isn’t Frankenstein’s monster. It’s Dr. Frankenstein himself. After all, it was his creation, his longing to make something impactful that led him to the ultimate downfall.”
Virgil nodded. “A very interesting concept.”
“It is, really. It’s a shame it doesn’t get more credit.”
“I mean, it is a classic-”
“And classics are considered boring.”
“You got me there,” Virgil says.
“What are you going to write about?”
“I dunno? Vampires?”
“A good choice,” Logan nods, focusing on his own writing.
For the first time in months, Virgil puts a pen to paper with the intention to write a poem. He falls back into it easily, naturally, as if this was the way it was supposed to be. In fact, he flew through writing the poem. He looked around to find that his classmates were still working, some showing visible signs of struggle. He wondered if it should be more difficult.
He read his poem back silently, ducking his head and mouthing the words. He had no interest in performing slam poetry, but the art of it amazed him. He would spend hours and hours watching different poets perform if he could. But he always thought about if he was one of them, standing up on stage, would he stack up? Some of his poems did. Some fell short. Like this one.
Virgil crossed it out with a big X, frowning deeply, and flipped to the next page.
He tried again with the same result. Sounding good...didn’t stack up, big X, and a flip. Virgil brought his hand down his face. Maybe it was the monster. Maybe the trick was to use a strong emotion. And what would be stronger than fear?
He brought his pencil back to the page. That was it. He had to tap in to his fear. What was he really afraid of?
Virgil snorted to himself. That was a stupid question. Everything. He had anxiety.
He paused, thinking back to Roman’s project. The monsters. Specifically, the anxiety monster.
Virgil started furiously scribbling, writing out aspects of the effects in real life he wanted to include, as well as all the emotions he had felt. He turned phrases into stanzas and was just working on fitting them altogether when the bell rang.
^
Virgil doesn’t know a time when he didn’t have anxiety. The cutting, the eating disorder, those had dates, clear times set between “Before the Disorder” and “During the Disorder.” But anxiety had always been there, always been a thing-no, always been a friend to him. Something that kept him out of trouble, that always was there when things got rough. Sure, it didn’t feel good, but none of his coping mechanisms felt good.
There is a “Before Panic Attacks” and “Panic Attacks,” because he didn’t get those until the sixth grade. He thinks. He remembers it used to feel like a wave of emotion he was drowning under. It started as nervousness, but then it just built until it washed over him. He would cry and gasp for breath, but he would always try to hide it. Even from Elliot.
On the first day he can remember getting a panic attack, he went home and wrote down some of the words that came to mind-Drowning. Pulled under.
Empty.
He didn’t know what to do with them, so they just sat there. Even when he got rid of the notebook, they sat in his mind, refusing to go anywhere.
This is where his mind was when he was sitting at lunch. With those words.
“Earth to Charlie Frown,” Roman leaned over and waved a hand in front of Virgil’s face. Virgil blinked.
“Sorry, I’m just...thinking about this assignment.”
“The monster assignment?” Logan questioned.
“Yeah, Virgil, I’ve got to say I wasn’t so sure about giving out this assignment, but you seemed so inspired, I was glad I chose to,” Mrs. Spencer spoke up.
“I just was writing about vampires, and they were okay, but they weren’t good enough, so I just thought about what I was scared of most in life, but the reality is I’m terrified of everything-I have anxiety,” Virgil sighs, “So I’m writing about that. About my monster. Anxiety.”
“That’s good, Virgil!” Patton says, “You have an outlet!”
“Yeah, you don’t talk about your anxiety in group,” Roman says.
“I just don’t have much to say about it, it’s here, and it sucks,” Virgil shrugs.
“Where do you think it comes from?” Patton asks.
Virgil pauses. If he looked at this logically, he could reason that perhaps, maybe, it came from walking on eggshells around an abusive parent for years. But he doesn’t know if he should tell them that.
“I just...have it, I guess?” It’s a lame excuse, he knows.
“If you don’t want to tell us-”
“I don’t want to tell you,” Virgil immediately blurts out. They all turn to look at him. “I’m sorry. It’s not you. It’s just that....I’m still dealing with it myself. And Picani knows, so don’t be worried, but. It’s a lot.”
“The anxiety or what you don’t want to tell us?”
“Both,” Virgil tells Roman.
“It’s okay,” Patton says, “You don’t have to tell us. I shouldn’t have asked, I’m sorry.”
“You didn’t know,” Virgil says.
“I am writing about Dr. Frankenstein,” Logan says to fill the silence that follows, “And while I do find these creative things… challenging, I must say I’m much more thankful that I picked him and not something with emotions.”
“Dr. Frankenstein?” Roman says, “C’mon, live a little, do the real Frankenstein! The monster!”
“Roman, there’s much more complexity in the scientist-”
“But the monster is awesome, and he has such cool makeup-”
“That doesn’t matter, I’m not going to be him, I’m writing him-”
“Speaking of which, what are you all going to be for Halloween?” Roman asks, eyes lighting up like an excited puppy, “I was thinking a mummy, ooh! Or maybe an astronaut from Among Us! OOH! Or maybe-”
“It’s October 1st, when would we have chosen?” Logan asks.
“I have a few options,” Virgil speaks up.
“You would,” Roman says. “What about you, Patton? Surely something adorable, but what exactly-?”
“Actually, um,” Patton frowns, “I don’t really...do Halloween?”
The table goes silent.
“Why?” Virgil asks, finally, “Is it like a religion thing?”
“No…”
“Is it the candy?” Logan asks.
“I mean, it doesn’t help, but,” Patton sighs, “They don’t really...make costumes in my size?”
There’s silence again before Roman slams his hand down on the table. “Unacceptable!”
“Geez- would you give us a warning-?!”
“That is pure laziness on the costume’s part, besides we don’t need any cheap plastic costumes, we need some real ones!” Roman says over Virgil.
“For what?” Patton says, “I’m not going to a party or anything. It’s fine, I just….”
“Just what?”
“You know…”
“No, I genuinely don’t,” Logan says, “What do you do?”
“I isolate myself in my room and avoid it at all costs,” Patton admits.
“Now that is unacceptable,” Virgil says.
“Then what do you expect me to do? Hm? Call the companies and complain-”
“No, silly!” Roman says, “I will make you the costume!”
Patton snaps his mouth closed, “You’d...do that? For me?”
“Of course!” Roman says, “And for you two, too, if you want.”
“I can help,” Virgil says, “I have made costumes before, so…”
“I suppose it wouldn’t hurt,” Logan says after three expectant sets of eyes turn to look at him. “As long as I don’t look ridiculous.”

the waves aren’t that bad (my feelings for you are stronger)

A/N a good old summer au for the soul also i’m fairly sure part of this ended up being like my last jun (svt) au Please don’t @ me i already know lmao -Admin Ay
Water sprayed on your face as you stood against the rails of the boardwalk. There were a group of children running back and forth behind you with half of their ice cream cones dripping all over their shirts. You liked to sneak away from your home and watch as the boats moved in and out of the harbor.
Living in a lake town was really quiet in the winter. Houses on the shore were empty, the residents floated through the streets boredly, and the occasional dedicated fisherman sat on the docks with their hook in the water. Summer, when the sun obnoxiously beat on everyone’s skin, was when the town was as busy as Times Square. Well, at least you liked to think it was. You had never been.
Very often you would be able to spot the people who were in town for a vacation. They were louder, younger, and brighter amongst the residents who grew tired of seeing the same things every day. In technicality, yes you were also a lifelong resident, but in your heart you were just like the fresh faced tourists that drifted through annually.
“Honey–”
You jolted in your spot at the sound of the voice behind you. Knowing exactly who it was, you winced as you turned around to face your mother.
“Jesus kid, how many times do I have to tell you about being so close to the lake? It isn’t safe!”
Your groaned as your mother yanked you away, her grip paralleled with that of a bear’s. Part of you wanted to whine about how overbearing you mom was being, but you also understood it.
Your dad had died in the water. His boat too small and too far from the shore on such a stormy night. So rather than complaining whenever you were denied permission to go play in the deep water with friends, you would listen and find something to do by yourself.
“Hey, Mom? Could you at least let me go?”
Steps faltering, she did as requested and rubbed her hands on her pants. Your mother cleared her throat before speaking again.
“Go stop by the corner store before coming home, alright? We need more juice and and eggs.”
You sighed and nodded, splitting from your mother. You decided to go ahead and run the errand as you had nothing else to do. A loose rock on the ground kept you entertained throughout your journey as you kicked it, not having to pay much attention to your direction. You knew the town like the back of your hand.
Getting to the shop did not take long, with it being located two blocks away from the boardwalk, just on the edge of the gated residents. It’s where all the rich people lived, or stayed rather, in their large lake houses during vacation. The area was beautiful from what you could decipher whenever you got curious enough to peek through the gates.
As you walked in you saw a boy looking quite exasperated as he dug in his pockets. The cashier, Donghyuck (you were familiar with him, he typically worked the day shift)(he might have also been in your class once? He tended to stay to himself), tapped his foot loudly against the floor.
Finally, the boy huffed and dropped his hands.
“Sorry, I’ll just take the milk then.”
You noticed the pack of gel pens that the boy also had placed on the counter. Donghyuck began to slide the pens away before you stepped in.
“How much are they?”
The boy jumped as you settled next to him. Donghyuck looked at you tiredly.
“10 bucks.”
The boy gasped, eyes wide as he looked at you.
“Oh, no, you don’t have to!”
You smiled, “Don’t worry about it. Its my good deed of the week.”
Donghyuck snorted at the conflicted look on the boy’s face.
“Just take it, man.”
You hummed as you slid a ten dollar bill from your pocket and handed it to Donghyuck.
“I’ll pay you back, I swear.” said the boy.
You rolled your eyes. Then, an idea made way into your head.
“How about you tell me your name and you can help me carry my groceries home?”
“Its Renjun,” the boy said, shy smile stuck on his face as he took his now paid for items and followed you to the produce section.
You and Renjun fell into a comfortable rhythm as you talked. It wasn’t as if you were conversing about anything profound, just small talk. Unlike most small talk, filled with forced smiles and awkward pauses, it felt like you were catching up to an old friend. You learned that Renjun was only staying the summer with his aunt (she stayed in one of the fenced off lake houses) and that he liked to draw in his free time (hence the neat gel pens he were struggling to buy). Renjun learned that you lived with your mom in a condo above a flower shop (his eyes lit up at the fact).
Time flew, and before the both of you knew it, you were standing right in front of the said flower shop. Renjun began to turn around, but you couldn’t help that you wanted to stay with him longer.
“I guess I’ll just–”
“Uhm, do you want to come inside?”
Even to your own ears you sounded terribly desperate. Despite that, Renjun grinned.
“Sure, I mean,” he frowned, “is that okay? With your mom?”
You nodded, “Don’t worry about it.”
Your mother being fine with Renjun would be an understatement. She was quite charmed with how polite he was. She even had the gall to wink at you (very conspicuously, may you add) when you recounted the events that led to you becoming friends.
Your mother giggled at one of Renjun’s stories about his friends back at his home town. Then, she shot up at the sound of her phone alarm dinging.
“Ah, I have to pull my lasagna out the oven.” she scurried into the kitchen area.
Renjun leaned towards you, making eye contact. He mouthed the words “I love your mom,” causing you to snicker. Your mother placed the lasagna on the kitchen island and started decorating the countertop with other food items.
“Hey, sweetie, ask Renjun if he wants to stay for dinner!”
You rolled your eyes, as if Renjun couldn’t hear her.
Said boy glanced out the window and gasped. The sun was starting to set on the horizon. You caught on and placed a reassuring hand on Renjun’s shoulder.
“Actually, Mom, I don’t think he can. He was probably supposed to bring his milk home a long time ago.”
Renjun gasped again, “I totally forgot about the milk.”
Your mother laughed at that.
“That’s fine! I’d love to have you over another night, though.”
You looked at Renjun hopefully, and he smiled back at you.
“Of course, thank you for having me over!”
You stood up, making your way towards the door, “I’ll walk you out.”
You watched as Renjun gathered his things and shuffled your way. Once out of the building you both could hear your mother yelling from out the window.
“Come by whenever you want, young man!”
Your mother’s enthusiasm cracked him up, and the sound made you feel giddy. When he finally calmed down, Renjun cleared his throat and started rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet. You tapped your foot, trying to think of something to say.
“If you don’t have anything to do, you can come over tomorrow and hang around the shop.” You said, ending more on a question.
“Definitely.” Renjun said.
You didn’t notice the tightness in your chest until it was gone. With that, Renjun waved and finally left. He vanished around a street corner, and the remnants of his shadow followed.
The next day, you were awoken by the sound of your phone dinging. You groaned and grabbed for the device. The screen said that it was five past noon, which caused you to groan again. Getting your sleep schedule back in check will be a pain.
Still sleepy, it took you a second to find out what was the cause of the noise that woke you up. It was Renjun, causing your eyes to open a little wider. He had sent a string of nervous messages; they asked when he should come over and apologized if he had woken you up. You chuckled before a yawn overcame you. So he was an early riser? For some reason that didn’t surprise you.
Eventually, you managed to get dressed and come down stairs into the flower shop. You jump as the first thing you see is Renjun tripping through the door, your mother rearing behind him.
“Look who I found out and about!” She chirped.
You rolled your eyes, unable to help the goofy smile growing on your face. Renjun walked towards you hand held up, and you appropriately responded to the gesture by high-fiving him.
“Sorry I didn’t text back, I just woke up a few minutes ago.” You had the sense to look embarrassed
Renjun shook his head, jabbing a thumb towards your mother’s direction, “Its cool, your mom told me all about it.”
By now your mother had snuck into the store’s back room, most likely to continue putting together a few bouquet orders. The sounds of foliage could be heard and you knew that was precisely what she was doing.
You made your way behind the cashier counter, putting on a beige apron with the words “Le Jardin d’Eden” scrawled on the front in blue. Renjun was glancing around the store; he seemed especially entranced by the orchids in the far corner. You pulled a stool next to you behind the counter and patted it loud enough to get Renjun’s attention. He got the message and sat next to you.
“So, what were you up to so early in the morning?”
“I guess you consider 9am early in the morning,” Renjun chuckled, “I wasn’t doing much. Just planning a few pieces for my portfolio.”
You parroted the word “portfolio” in curiosity.
Renjun cleared his throat and looked at his hands. “Yeah, I’m trying out for an arts school.”
“That’s so cool,” you nudged Renjun, causing him to look back up to you, “You should totally show me what you have so far.”
He smiled and let out a breath, “Totally.”
Then, a customer walked into the store accompanied by the bells on the door jingling. You got up to help, and when you finished with him a new customer walked in, and another. It seemed like a busy day, which was a bummer. You wanted to spend all your attention on Renjun. Every time you glimpsed at him he was drawing a new flower in the sketchbook that he, from what you know, conjured out of nowhere. Sometimes you met eyes with him and his mouth twitched at the corners. Attempts at smiles while his mind was concentrated on his art. He looked like a painting himself, but you blushed at the thought and continued to work.
You fell against the door after turning the “open” sign to say “closed,” officially ending the working day. Your mother started sweeping the floors and Renjun disappeared into the back room a while ago to do something for her. He said he felt bad for doing nothing while you and your mother worked. You began to pick up cleaning supplies yourself until your mother waved her hand.
“Ah, no. Go accompany your friend, I got this.”
You rolled your eyes at your mother’s antics but internally thanked her as you approached Renjun in the back room. He was trying, and failing, to wrap a bow around a basket. He whispered what you could only guess to be swears under his breath as the bow turned out crooked.
“Do you want me to help?” You grinned at the way Renjun’s arms fell like weights to his sides.
Renjun let out a groan before answering in a whine, “Yes, please.”
You moved in front of the basket and untied the ribbon. Renjun leaned towards you to get a better view of your hands. You tried your best to ignore the way his breath was warm as it hit you. While walking Renjun through the steps it was hard to will the shake out of your voice, but you managed.
After what felt like forever, you finished tying the bow. Renjun’s brows furrowed, and for a second you thought you actually did worse than you thought until he spoke again.
“How did you manage to do that so easily?”
You laughed and shook your head.
“I said almost the same thing when my mom taught me. It just takes a couple of times until you get the feel for it.”
Renjun smiled, “I’m definitely gonna impress you with a cool bow next time I see you.”
“I’ll look forward to it.”
There was a lull in the conversation, but neither of you minded. You looked over Renjun’s shoulder as he worked in his sketchbook. He had a page full of flowers that were on display in Jardin d’Eden. Everything looked perfect to you, but Renjun would grunt and fill in another part of a large hydrangea in the corner of the paper.
That’s how you spent the next weeks. Renjun would come to the shop and distract you while you worked. At least not deliberately. You just couldn’t help your eyes from drifting to him and whatever he did. Most times he’d be drawing, but sometimes he’d also be engaged in conversation with a customer or your mom.
Finally, Renjun took you to meet his aunt. She was just as friendly as Renjun when she spoke, but was otherwise distant as she left you and Renjun to your own devices. You both would often spend time together on the balcony of her house looking over the lake when you weren’t working.
Sometimes Renjun’s friends would video call while you were with him. They were all very friendly (and loud) and would make sure to explain inside jokes to you. Especially if they were at the cost of Renjun’s embarrassment. Often you would find yourself crouched on the floor, holding your stomach from the laughter. Jeno and Jaemin, you had noticed, were the ones most often poking fun at him.
One day, Jeno popped on screen, interrupting the deep conversation you were having with Jaemin about snacks.
“Injunnie! Have you taken (Y/N) onto the boat yet?” Jeno’s eyes blinked into the camera, them being the only part of his body you could see.
Renjun coughed, face flushing as he shook his head.
“Uh, no. Not at all. Completely forgot auntie had it, actually.”
Another of Renjun’s friends, Chenle, shoved Jeno out of the way to be seen.
“What do you mean ‘forgot’? Didn’t you help your aunt repaint it the other day?”
You caught a glimpse of Jaemin behind Chenle, smirking as if he knew something. Renjun was too busy studying the lake to see you tilt your head in question. Then you remembered your mother.
“Its cool if he didn’t,” you shrugged, “My mom probably wouldn’t have let me anyway. She has a thing against the water.”
Renjun seemed to finally snap out of whatever he was thinking, as he whipped back towards you.
“You literally live in a lake town, why would she have anything against you being in a lake?”
You sighed and looked up to the sky. Stars shone, and you remembered one of many nights where you stayed out and tried to ignore your mother’s crying.
“You know how my dad was a fisherman? He died when I was little, drowned during a storm. My mom hasn’t let me swim in the lake or get on a boat since.”
Your father’s absence wasn’t something you felt often. You could barely remember him. More than anything, your disconnect to the incident was what bothered you the most. You swallowed down the weird feeling that you got from it and looked back down to Renjun. He wasn’t saying anything, but you could tell what he was thinking from the downturn of his lip and the hurt in his eyes.
“We’re sorry.” Jeno whispered, him along with Chenle and Jaemin mirroring the same look.
You smiled, “Don’t worry about it. If I’m honest, I’ve been wanting to rebel just a little and swim in the lake or something. I can’t remember the last time I did.”
“Then why don’t I take you?” Renjun blurted, then blushed. His eyes flickered to the side towards his phone screen before he looked back at you.
He took a deep breath and started again, “Why don’t I take you on my aunt’s boat?”
Jaemin leaned into the screen and somehow managed to whisper loudly as he spoke, “Sneak out when your mom’s asleep and can’t wonder where you are.”
The rest of the boys in the call grew mischievous smiles on their faces. You gulped.
“I mean, I’ve never–”
“Of course you’ve never snuck out,” Chenle rolled his eyes and you held back the desire to frown, “There’s nothing to do there. You probably never wanted to.”
You finally did frown. You heard a smack from the phone and Chenle rocketed out of frame with a hiss.
Jeno looked at you apologetically, “Don’t take what Lele says seriously. We sneak out all the time to do stuff together, Renjun would too. You’re just a good kid.”
From there the conversation branched off. Renjun told you a story of how Jeno once actually stole candy from a baby. Everyone laughed, void for Jeno, who buried his face into Jaemin’s shoulder. Then your mother called, and it was time for you to leave.
Renjun walked you home. His hands fidgeted with the loops of his jeans the entire time. His nervous energy made you nervous. Before you knew it your home and the shop were in sight and you and Renjun hadn’t said a word to each other. That was, before Renjun cleared his throat, causing you to jump.
“You know, I wasn’t joking.”
You tilted your head, confused about what he was referring to.
“I mean, about taking you out on the boat. If–” he looked to the ground, “If you wanted.”
You tried to bite down the goofy grin you knew was trying to inch across your face. You lightly stepped on Renjun’s foot to make him look up at you.
“Honestly, I totally do.”
You didn’t realize Renjun’s hands were still moving until they stopped.
Renjun let out a breath, “Yeah?” his voice soft.
“Yeah,” you matched his softness, “I haven’t had my life-changing summer adventure yet.”
Renjun snorted as you turned to walk into the building. You’d deny the skip in your step as you made your way to your room.
“Are you sure this is fine?” You couldn’t help from wringing your hands as you followed Renjun on the small path through the trees.
Renjun chuckled before turning around to you. It was hard to ignore how the lights of the fireflies twinkled in his eyes and the moonlight rested on his skin.
“I promise its fine,” he held his hand out to you, “to make you feel better.”
You had only known this boy for a few weeks, but all rationale initially flew through the window when you decided to sneak out in the middle of the night for the first time. So, you nodded and grabbed his hand as he lead you towards the dock. It didn’t take much time before you reached it. The water was placid and the only things that seemed to disturb its surface were the water striders gliding across and the occasional fish.
There alongside the dock, a sailboat bobbed in the water.
“This is your aunt’s?” you said.
Renjun only nodded at you before looking back at the boat. You stared at it as well. It was pretty, painted in a coral color with blue cursive letters on its side. You squinted to try and read what they said. Renjun kicked at a nearby rock and tugged on his hair.
“The Moomin,” he coughed, “My aunt, uh, she had me name it when I was little.”
You couldn’t help the teasing smile on your face, “That’s precious.”
“Please shut up before I push you into this water.”
Renjun continued grumbling under his breath, and the chokes resulting from holding back your laughter almost caused you to fall in all by yourself.
Renjun climbed into the boat first. You followed, easing your way on with Renjun’s help. The boat rocked from the movement of you both sitting down. You tensed, and both your hands shot out to stabilize yourself. Renjun sat right across from you. He touched his ankle to yours, and you eased. Your mouth still twitched in displeasure, for some reason he felt too far away.
The boat eventually stopped rocking, but your stomach still felt tingly. Renjun eyed you worriedly as you tugged at your hair. You couldn’t get your eyes to stop jumping from one thing to the other.
Renjun stood slowly and moved to sit next to you. Your breath hitched as the boat rocked again.
You shot Renjun an anxious glance, “Aren’t we supposed to be on opposite sides? Isn’t it dangerous?”
Renjun smiled, and suddenly it wasn’t so hard to breath.
“Its fine,” he took your hand in his, “Are you okay?”
You sighed and squeezed Renjun’s hand. He squeezed back.
“I’m going to be. I think.”
Renjun doesn’t speak after that. You look up at the sky and see the full moon shining bright. All the noises you hear are crickets and Renjun’s breathing beside you.
The warmth from Renjun’s hand spreads up your arms. Your stomach still feels tingly, but its different, and the thought that you could stay on the boat forever crosses your mind.
“Renjun?”
“Yeah?”
The words don’t make it out of your mouth but Renjun seemed to already know what you wanted to say, his lips pressed against yours.
Your eyes were shut, but you could still see Renjun in your head. Radiant, soft, like you were kissing the moon. You dreaded the sun rising again.
