What themes George used with Rhaenyra and Aegon in the book?

the main theme for both of them, like in most of FB, is kingship, so what makes a "good" king/queen, what is power in the first place, how do you receive it, how to wield it etc. add to that the theme of hubris - house targaryen cannibalizing itself and sowing the seeds for its future destruction. and, also, the theme that follows through the entirety of the series - corruption - power as a means to its own ends, not for the betterment of society - “why is it always the innocents who suffer most, when you high lords play your game of thrones?”

when asked the question put to shireen, "who would you prefer, aegon or rhaenyra?", you should be going "oh, well, on the one hand this, on the other hand that" and it should lead to a debate on political structures and how societies are organized and how laws are enacted in society and what is the nature of law anyway etc. instead the show turned it into "rhaenyra obviously bc aegon is a literal danger to society".

so when people say that aegon should be even darker bc this is game of thrones and everyone is mean and dark and awful so stop being a crybaby about it, like, ok, but there is a limit as to how far you can push this without sacrificing the balance of this story.

bc this is not the kind of story in which maegor reborn kills saint rhaenyra and does her this great injustice of erasing her queenship from the history books. not that it's a moralistic children's tale either, but, if the lopsidedness between them would have skewed so much in rhaenyra's favour, she would have received a more heroic death or died on her own terms at least

the results of that fanfic poll like "will you click off a fic for being written in present tense?" makes me SO MAD because the only reason i STARTED writing in present tense after YEARS of past tense was bc everyone else in my fandoms was doing it so i thought it WAS the hip and normal thing to do!!!!!! and GUESS WHAT it makes more sense bc u can describe past scenarios in their lives without making it confusing in the flow of the story! when you interrupt present tense to speak in past tense, you get to linger over backstories and then return to the sequence of events without problem!!! and anyone who is like "well you cant use a pretty descriptive style in present tense 🥺" WHY NOT!!! literally WHAT are you talking about!!!!!!! "only fanfics ever write in the present tense so it feels cheesy" YOU ARE LITERALLY JUST WRONG READ MORE BOOKS THERE ARE SO MANY PUBLISHED WORKS IN PRESENT TENSE!!!!! "i like feeling like im hearing something old, i dont wanna be IN the story" HAS NO ONE EVER EXCITEDLY TOLD YOU A STORY THAT HAPPENED TO THEM WHILE SITTING AT A CAMPFIRE AND TRIED TO SET THE SCENE AS IT UNFOLDED IN THE PRESENT TO IMMERSE YOU??? As a writer and a queer person, I like the trans metaphor you could put on this. You realize your true self as a marginalized identity but all your loved ones deny you could be to anyone that dare even ask. So you stay in the closet, thinking the worst thing is to be the thing no one wants you to be. Some of you may have heard about Monarch butterflies being added to the Threatened species list in the US and be planning to immediately rush out in spring and buy all the milkweed you can manage to do your part and help the species.

And that's fantastic!! Starting a pollinator garden and/or encouraging people and businesses around you to do the same is an excellent way to help not just Monarchs but many other threatened and at-risk pollinator species!

However.

Please please PLEASE do not obtain Tropical Milkweed for this purpose!

Tropical milkweed (Asclepias curassavica)--also commonly known as bloodflower, Mexican butterflyweed, and scarlet milkweed--will likely be the first species of milkweed you find for sale at most nurseries. It'll be fairly cheap, too, and it grows and propagates so easily you'll just want to grab it! But do not do that!

Tropical milkweed can cause a host of issues that can ultimately harm the butterflies you're trying to help, such as--

Harboring a protozoan parasite called OE (which has been linked to lower migration success, reductions in body mass, lifespan, mating success, and flight ability) for long periods of time

Remaining alive for longer periods, encouraging breeding during migration time/overwintering time as well as keeping monarchs in an area until a hard freeze wherein which they die

Actually becoming toxic to monarch caterpillars when exposed to warmer temperatures associated with climate change

However--do not be discouraged!! There are over 100 species of milkweed native to the United States, and plenty of resources on which are native to your state specifically! From there, you can find the nurseries dedicated to selling native milkweeds, or buy/trade for/collect seeds to grow them yourself!!

The world of native milkweeds is vast and enchanting, and I'm sure you'll soon find a favorite species native to your area that suits your growing space! There's tons of amazing options--whether you choose the beautiful pink vanilla-smelling swamp milkweed, the sophisticated redring milkweed, the elusive purple milkweed, the alluring green antelopehorn milkweed, or the charming heartleaf milkweed, or even something I didn't list!

And there's tons of resources and lots of people willing to help you on your native milkweed journey! Like me! Feel free to shoot me an ask if you have any questions!

Just. PLEASE. Leave the tropical milkweed alone. Stay away.
