About my new camera
Yes, I bought a new camera, but it was not a last minute decision. Well, the camera purchase was pretty much last minute after I saw a video about the camera I chose and did some research on the Web & Youtube.
For about a year I've been wondering if I should sell my Sony a7r3 body and Sony/Zeiss Sonnar T* 55mm f/1.8 lens, which came highly recommended, including by Ken Rockwell, who I also turned to for advice about my new camera. The 55mm f/1.8 lens was highly recommended; it was one of the original set of lenses for the Sony a7 line of mirrorless cameras.
I wondered about getting rid of it because, while I enjoyed using it and got some great photos with it, my 24-105mm f/4 Sony G lens also took great photos, and it covered the 55 mm range. Granted, the 55mm produced super creamy bokeh, but the 24-105 f/4 did too, though maybe not as creamy. Maybe for me, as a vegan, the 24-105mm f/4 bokeh was (is) creamy enough?
Anyway, here is one of my favorites, taken with the 24-105mm f/4 about 6 months after I bought the a7r3. (I've owned an a7r3 for over 6 years now...)
Tumblr media
Like butter?
Back to the new camera story. About a year ago, I saw this video about "one camera/one lens."
youtube
I also watched a video where he discussed keeping camera gear down to a useful minimum "5 Reasons to Keep Your Equipment Simple feat. Documentary Photography Daniel Milnor." His insights resonated with me because I am not a gear head. I like having one lens on each camera body and not having to fidget. I like to keep it simple.
Then, about 3 weeks ago, I watched this video.
youtube
Now, I go make photos in SF often. Every once in a while I also go to Oakland, which has, at least in the 30 years I've been in living in California, a super bad reputation. I've never felt unsafe in either city walking around with my a7r3 with the medium sized 24-105mm f/4 lens on it. Granted, I carry it in the original, small, Peak Design sling bag, which I immediately christened my Audrey Hepburn camera bag because it is so elegant, especially with the little brown leather handle on top.
Tumblr media
BTW, I also own the Peak Design messenger bag, but I almost always use this one for my camera and use the messenger bag for when I need to carry my laptop. The 5L sling bag had a bonus: Both my a7r3s with their respective lenses attached fit in this one little bag. Tight, but they fit.
Anyway, that video about feeling safe did set me to thinking, since I am getting older and walk around alone, but it also made go back to wondering if I should carry both cameras, which I rarely do anymore.
Then Adrian Vila posted this video.
youtube
And then I found his original video, about 4 years old, about the RX100 vii.
youtube
the idea of carrying a smaller camera with a 24-200 zoom intrigued me, I did some research, including visiting Ken Rockwell's site, where he highly recommended this camera (see the review here).
I was convinced, but I knew that the camera is 5 years old (and Sony has no plans of releasing a newer model), so I looked up prices for used, and if I could find them, new cameras. I eventually just opted to get a new one and am going to sell my a7r3 with the 55mm f/1.8 lens. Interesting fact: The Sony RX100 line (7 models) all have a Zeiss Sonnar T* zoom lens. Mine has a 24-200mm f/2.8-4.5 variable lens, so I am still going to have a Zeiss lens, even after I sell my 55mm Zeiss.
Then there was the coincidence that they actually had an RX100 vii in stock at the Sacramento store. I visited the Mike's Camera Website, choosing specifically the Sacramento location (they have several locations in California and Colorado) and saw they had one for sale, so I drove last there Wednesday to buy the camera.
Funny thing is, I learned they don't usually carry the RX100 vii anymore (it is, after all, discontinued) but they happened to get a delivery of one just that day from their warehouse. (I could have ordered it and it would be delivered to the store or to my apartment.) The sales person (Colton) went to check if it was ordered by someone, but no, so the camera was mine.
I explained to Colton how when I went in to buy my first a7r3 on 12-26-17, they did have it, but I wanted the 24-105mm lens, which was just released (and in popular demand) and was told they only had one, which someone pre-ordered. However, the salesperson (Taek) checked and it turned out that person had not gone in to pick up the lens or contacted them about it, and it was sitting in the store for 6 weeks, so Taek opted to let me have it. As Colton said, I have good camera Karma.
So, yes, I am going to be using a smaller camera with a smaller sensor (1 inch) that has only 20 MP as opposed to my a7r3's 42 MP in a larger full frame sensor. However, while thinking the new camera purchase over, I thought about the awesome photos I got from my Nikon D50 with its dinky 28-80mm f/2.5-5.6 lens, and the RX100 is a huge step up.
Finally, here are 2 photos of my new camera.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OMG, my a7r3 is dusty...
Ok. That's all for now.
The adventure continues...

March
The month is coming to an end. I'm yearning for warm days. My month in photography has been... interesting.
This month I picked up two new pieces of gear & rented one more:
Fujifilm 70-300mm f/4-5.6
My first super telephoto lens. It's been wild. I've always enjoyed telephoto photography, but the lenses are... large. This is a nice compromise lens. It's a bit slow, but it's long as hell & fits in my smallest camera bag. Love it. Here's some photos from it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kolari Vision IR Chrome Lite Filter
I've had a fairly busted full spectrum converted X-E1 for a while. I dunno why it took me so long to pick up an IR Chrome filter for it. IR Chrome is the whole reason I want an full spectrum camera.
My X-E1's electronic contacts don't work, so I can't use it with most of my lenses. I've landed on using a 7Artisans 35mm f/1.4 lens (only $60!) on it. The image quality isn't great, but it's been good to learn on.
IR photography gets better in the summer thanks to all the foliage. It's a bit blah right now. So, expect more of this soon.

Sony RX100 VII rental
I haven't rented much camera gear. I wanted to try something low stakes first. This month I headed to Pittsburgh for a PWHL hockey game. I couldn't bring my usual cameras into the arena. So, I decided a small RX100 would be a good pick. I rented it for the weekend and got some great pics. I don't really like the camera that much, so I wouldn't get it again. I definitely am gonna look into other compact cameras though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Continuing to learn the X-T5
I picked up a Fuji X-T5 after using an X-T2 (and X-H1) for a long time. I've been loving the image quality of the camera and the IBIS. The photos look phenomenal. There's a learning curve to every camera & I knew the X-T2 like the back of my hand. With the X-T5 as my main camera, I'm sure it won't take long to be second nature.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Film
I'm currently trying to shoot through a box of Portra 400. 5 rolls in my Nikon F3. I've gotten through 2 1/2 rolls. Only one has been developed, but I still need to scan them. I haven't ever tried hard to learn a specific film before. Now that I have a solid film camera, though, it seems like the right time to do it.
And that's what I've been up to this month in the world of photography

What's your gear setup? Your photos have such a unique quality to them
I use a Sony RX100 VII for a lot of shows (it’s an amazing camera), or less frequently, a Canon D3400. I like to shoot through binoculars occasionally, which I think gives a particular depth that I love. All of my Ghost photos were shot with an iPhone 13, if you can believe that!
I have to credit editing with most of the way my photos look. Maybe I’ll post some edited/unedited ones side by side sometime, but beyond using the binoculars, editing is where I go after my pretty specific vision for how everything should look. Beyond sharpness and photo quality, the equipment doesn’t matter all that much in my opinion!!

DAY 435
Woah. Time really keeps flying by. It's actually terrifying.
So shit happened since the last time I came on here. I saw Ivana (twice, I think), I got a Sony RX100 VII which I love, we celebrated my mom's birthday, I saw Wasia Project and the Queen Extravaganza (even travelled to Rennes for them!) and many good plays... but most importantly, my grandma suffered a massive stroke. It was incredibly difficult to deal with. The anger, the pain, the sadness, the fear. The first few weeks, we really thought we were going to lose her because that's what the doctors said, but she is miraculously recovering, thank god.
What's on my mind at the moment? Well, I'm still planning my trip around Europe to see Big Time Rush. It's extremely exciting and also very anxiety-inducing and overwhelming. I'm kind of trying to deal with everything all at once. I also suffer from a lot of anxiety in general terms and I've been finding it very hard to communicate with strangers. I also feel like a terrible friend for sometimes prioritizing time alone over grand gestures of travelling here and there to support my friends. And I'm very worried about the future. Okay, cool, there's this tour ahead and it's a great thing and I've been using it as an excuse to not look for a job because, ah, well you see I can't find a job if I won't be there all June, right! But deep down I know my mental health is far too terrible to work, mostly my anxiety. So what the fuck do I do? The perspectives of a "conventional life" working a 9-5 I despise makes me want to k-word myself and I also know my anxiety wouldn't stand it, not even a day. So really, I am very deeply fucked and unless I write a mastermind piece of literature or something within the next couple of weeks or I win the lottery or something, I am even more fucked. That's a problem for July me I guess!
I just hope and pray the month of June goes smoothly and that the next couple of weeks are just a dream, and that my anxiety decreases as I achieve more and more in terms of preparations for the trip!
Bye bye, until next time!

Sony RX100 VII Thoughts After Two Months
Tumblr media Tumblr media
PROS:
Stacked sensors are the future. Well, technically the present considering that Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, and OM Systems all use stacked sensors in their top of the line cameras. Either way, finally getting to experience shooting with one on a daily basis has made me want one in pretty much any camera going forward. The benefits are twofold: Not only do you get shutter speeds up to 20 frames per second, and without a mechanical shutter flipping in the way obscuring your view in between shots, but you also get no rolling shutter while doing it. Pretty much every Sony camera can shoot 10 fps bursts with the silent shutter, but any movement can give you a jello-like effect since the sensor reads out so slow on non-stacked cameras. The only con, at least on this camera, is that you can’t shoot flash at higher than 1/100 with the electronic shutter. That’s still plenty fast for a lot of stuff, but well below the 1/2000 you get when shooting the mechanical shutter.
The fast frame rate wouldn’t make much of a difference if the camera was bad at autofocusing, but this camera is great at it. It has a lot of the same fancy focusing stuff that my full frame Sony has like human/animal eye autofocus and all the tracking modes I’m used to. It actually makes the camera pretty solid for wildlife if you can get close enough at the 200mm end.
Speaking of that, the 24-200mm equivalent is a great range, and one that I missed a lot since I traded away my Tamron 28-200 to help cover the cost of my A7RIV. The small size and extra 4mm on the wide end actually makes it even more convenient than that Tamron.
Aside from covering a broader range than the 24-70 equivalent lens from the older RX100 cameras, this lens also seems noticeably sharper. The last RX100 model I had, the Mk. IV, just didn’t seem as crispy as this lens is.
It has a touchscreen! It’s wild to think that the previous RX100 cameras I owned didn’t have this basic ass feature, but Sony was very late in putting touch screens in their cameras. Ironically, I don’t really use it in this one because the AF is good enough that I can just do focus and recompose with tracking.
Tumblr media
CONS:
It’s still only a 1” style sensor so high ISO isn’t the cameras strong suit. Programs like DXO PureRAW help a lot and let you get somewhat usable images at ISO 6400 in a pinch, but you’re kinda pushing things at that point.
While the lens is sharper and covers a wider range than the older models, it’s also significantly slower. At 24mm equivalent it’s already at f/2.8 where the old cameras were f/1.8. It’s f/3.2 at 25mm, f/3.5 at 33mm, and f/4 at 40mm. From 109mm to 200mm you’re at f/4.5. The relative slowness of the lens combined with the small sensor means that this can struggle getting quality images in low light without a tripod or something.
No USB-C. My Fuji, Ricoh, and larger Sony all have USB-C charging, which is amazingly convenient when traveling. I haven’t really gone anywhere with this camera yet, but having to account for a micro USB cable is annoying since pretty much everything aside from my iPhone uses USB-C.
It’s expensive. Just like my Mk III and Mk IV I got it used so it was cheaper than retail, but the copy I got cost about twice what I paid for the previous models.
Start up time is just a tad bit slower than I’d like. The GRIII and X100V both beat it that regards, albeit those aren’t zoom lens so I have to cut the Sony some slack.

Sean Tucker I; Harvey Milk Photo Center. San Francisco, 08-28-24.
Last Wednesday I drove down to SF to attend Sean Tucker's lecture based on his excellent book, The Meaning in the Making. The whole afternoon and evening was awesome, serenely so. Sean's presentation was excellently casual, almost conversational. Afterward, I got the chance to fanboy a bit and talked with him for a couple of minutes.
Yes. Yes, I got all teary eyed while I was talking with him. All y'all know how much I love photography and having a conversation, brief as it was, with someone who's work I admire, was more than my tattered old soul could take.
BTW, I only took my new camera, my Sony RX100 vii, and got some cool photos. Some were candids of him. I did my usual, which was, far as I could tell, take photos when no one else was. I also often take photos of what others are not photographing.
Anyway...
