“One way dream” but it’s a lullaby Sonic sings or hums for Tails while hugging him whenever there’s a thunderstorm so he doesn’t get too scared.

TIME TO LOVE A CHARACTER:
Vector the crocodile! 🐊💚
What's not love about this character? He is hilarious and was always meant to be funny! (He literally starts dancing in his first appearance in 2D games if you stop moving him for a while 😂) he is a great leader! With love for dramatics, music and money 🤑🤑💰💰 He works better for comedy relief than boom knuckles horrendous blatant retarded stupidity or Amy's crazy stalker side (those can be more annoying than funny) but Vector was wonderful! Even in his TV shows apparitions like sonic x and even his only one time in Sonic boom (i liked the jacket but why did they take away the headphones?🙁) Being a reality star detective with a Show... That fitted his personality too well 😂😂.
But comic relief or not Vector is a character that knows when to be serious and I want to spot on the parts of him i liked the most in the IDW comics, I'm glad they are doing justice to him!🥰
First, the design: IDW art kicks the olds art style ass!
Tumblr media
Aww just look at them!!😍
Tumblr media
This heartbreaking moments...🥺🥺🥺 Vector defending his zombottified Kid and sacrificing himself to buy some time for the survivors 😢😢 he is just the best leader. I remember when he made the hard choice of caging between cars an infected citizen who was scared and crying and then charmy got mad at him and went back to her only to get infected too yet Vector was unable to leave his kid behind... 😭😭😭 LOVE HIM.
Tumblr media
OMG 😭😭 just look at them!! After the end of the apocalypse! Reunited and singing together with Charmy sitting in his hand 👌👌🥲🥲 (but I have to say that... It's weird that they draw Vectors tail that way... I think the tail should be behind like Spio's) Also I wish they put a happy tear on Spio's eyes after all the emotions he went through 🥲
Tumblr media
Jajaja I love this one! Because Vector is dancing with Amy and he is so tall he is lifting her 😂 it was nice seeing them dancing because I remembered that unnameable game about riding extreme gears where those two teamed up and for some reason they made Amy a obnoxious bitch (which she isn't 😡🤬), it was pretty weird seeing that messed up mix of chaotix and Rose teams... Wtf, anyway let's forget forever about that game. But also remembered his only episode in Sonic boom and I loved that Amy was a fan of his Show and trusted him more than Sonic 🤣🤣
Tumblr media
Ok 2 things: first his facial expressions...👌👌🤣🤣 I love it when they imitate manga funny faces
Second... One of the things i loved the most in Sonic X was Vector Crush on Cream's mom Vanilla and I'm so glad they made this reference like he still has the crush as long as she shows up (by the way is it me or Vanilla looks hotter and hotter in this comics than her other apparitions? I am. Not. Complaining.😗💘) I think Vector is the oldest main sonic character (not counting Shadow, he is mentally 15) but Vanilla must be older than him, he likes women older than him uh 😏😏😏 like Knuckles... Jejeje Also he is great dad material.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(hey, that rooster is copying Vector style in necklace lol)
And my last ones cause this is getting long, like I said he is dad material, he would be a great stepfather for cream, to me he already has another kid anyway because I see him as Charmy's caretaker and Charmy has Cream age. Look how he is cradling him is his big arm 🤗🤗🥰 and... Another heartbreaking moment with our poor babygirl Belle just look how gentle and caring he is trying to soothe Belle and caressing her head🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭😭😭😭 nobody will change my mind that he would be the best Dad.
And that's all my love for Vector on this post, see you at the next one! 😘💋💋

@boundforfreedomsonsal SonSal Week Year 3 Day 1
Oh boy it's that magical time of year isn't it! Maybe this year I will be able to finish out the week, but either way I plan to have a ton of fun. Here is a Day I, set in @sonictruenorth verse. The fic stands alone just fine; all you need to know is that characters are humanized, Sonic is roboticized, and the story takes place after Robotnik's defeat. The focus is on Sonic/Sally of course but with a cameo by Nicole, mentions of my pet ot3 Sonic/Sally/Shadow, and their beloved daughter. No surprise angst on day 1 of sonsal week (no promises for the rest of the week). Enjoy!
Sonic didn’t need to sleep these days. He missed being able to curl up in a hammock or the branches of a tree or hell, any secluded spot with something he could drape his body across like a damp towel, close his eyes, and crash. The high-octane pump of his heart gave way to exhaustion like a switch being flipped. Muscles he didn’t realize were sore sighed in relief before he was out like a light. His metal body couldn’t feel that same bone-deep exhaustion. He could sleep, and so he did, most nights. But he always found himself awake before the sun rose.
There were benefits. Throwing open the curtains to admire dawn over the Great Forest was one. Making coffee for his family was another. Sonic measured out the water and grounds the night before. Nicole set it brewing ten minutes before sunrise. And Sonic prepared the individual drinks with the care of a master alchemist. No cream, an absurd amount of sugar for Shadow. Plenty of cream, a touch of honey and almond extract for Sally. Sonic left coffee warming in the pot for Tails, who either hadn’t slept or would drag herself out of bed well past noon like any self-respecting teenager. In either case, she took hers black.
A mug in either hand, Sonic headed up to the bedroom. A quick glance confirmed what his drowsy brain had overlooked while he was still booting up. Their bed was made for three. That night, it had only held two. Now there was one; Shadow still clung to sleep. Though the Ultimate Lifeform prided themself on rarely needing to sleep, a few hours each night made a world of difference. The routine soothed them, as did drifting off in the arms of a loved one or two. They adored waking up to find coffee already brewed. Sometimes, Sonic even let them wake up peacefully. Sometimes. Today, he set their coffee down outside the blasat radius. Then he got a running start.
Slightly singed, with bitemarks along his throat and a smug smile on his face, Sonic brought the last coffee up to the loft. Sally perched like a queen on her throne, bathed in the ethereal glow of her dual monitors. The tweed blanket draped over her shoulders was finer than the most opulent of robes. “Morning, Sonic,” she said without turning away from her work.
He pried the window open until dawn’s light overpowered the faint lamp at the corner of Sally’s desk. “Mornin’, Sal,” he said. “I didn’t notice you getting up.”
“I was awake a while before you,” she said.
“That’s technically correct!” Nicole’s avatar popped up on Sally’s secondary monitor. “Sally woke up at 0600 hours yesterday morning, which is indeed before Sonic woke up today.”
“Fuck’s sake, princess,” Sonic said.
“Snitch,” Sally hissed. Nicole was unrepentant. “Look, I’ll take a rest after today’s Council meeting, but—”
“If by ‘after the meeting’ you mean ‘right now,’ then yeah, I agree.”
“Sonic, don’t you dare!” Too late. Without spilling her coffee, Sonic wrapped his free arm around Sally’s waist and slung her over his shoulder. Her attempts to wriggle free were hindered by the thrice-damned cozy blanket wrapped so snugly around her. Still, she complained all the way from the loft to the bedroom. “Put me down right now or I swear I’ll turn you into scrap!”
“Maybe if you were well-rested you’d be able to kick my ass,” Sonic said. He dropped her on the bed where it was still warmed by Shadow’s body heat. Before she could make a break for it, Sonic set the coffee down and jumped in beside her. In the blink of an eye he wrapped himself around Sally and pulled the blankets over them both. Sally pouted, but was losing the will to complain as Sonic’s grinning face pressed into the crook of her neck.
He reached over to the bedside table and handed Sally her coffee and a tablet. “Do what you gotta do,” he said. “I just worry about you is all.”
Sally sighed, the exasperation leaking out of her like air from a balloon. She turned her head to plant a kiss on Sonic’s temple. “You’re insufferable,” she said, and the word tasted sweet as honey.
Within minutes, she was asleep. Sonic carefully set her coffee and tablet aside. He couldn’t sleep, but he didn’t particularly want to. It was enough to feel Sally breathe slow and deep as golden dawn gave way to vivid blue sky.

happy day 2 of gwevin week! this fic is for the prompt of the day: warrant. shout out to @brooken-gwevin-weeks for organising this event!
title: could be a nail in my coffin  words: 1,091 summary: two superpowered hot-heads walk into a bar. stop me if you’ve heard this one. ben10k-verse.
“You know, you’re really getting lazy about this whole ‘convict on the run’ lifestyle.”
Kevin’s head turned up from the bar, chin still leaning on his closed fist as he lowered the half-empty glass of Vulcan whiskey from his lips. With a growing smile, toothy and shark-like, he tipped it at her in greeting.
“Gwendolyn. Been a while.”
“Two weeks,” she said dryly, slamming her Plumber’s badge down on the bar next to his elbow. “I have better things to do than chase you across the galaxy, Kevin.”
“But the chase is the best part.” His pupils glowed unnaturally as he held her gaze, the energy of eleven thousand ill-fated aliens prickling just under his skin. Kevin soothed it, pushing down just far enough to keep his human form in place. It wouldn’t do to cause a scene in public. Not yet, anyway.
He hadn’t finished his drink.
Gwendolyn looked away first, scouting the room quickly with her eyes, and no doubt considering how to empty the place before she had to mana-blast his ass through a brick wall again. His shoulder still wasn’t quite right from the last time, but that was all part of the fun.
Truth was, Kevin had all kinds of hidey-holes to crawl into, places he could disappear from Plumber eyes if he wanted to, and from the Big Brother sight of old Benjy. He’d done it before, just like he’d broken out of the Null Void more times than he could count. It was getting laughably easy, really.
But he couldn’t resist goading her like this, knowing Gwendolyn would take it upon herself to come out personally just to make a point. Or maybe she knew full well he’d mangle any other life form that came into his line of fire these days. Kevin liked to think she just missed having him around.
“You could make this easy, for once,” Gwendolyn offered, leaning over him to avoid prying eyes. Her hood was pushed back, the scarf that usually concealed her face yanked down to her neck, so he could take in the uneasy frown he’d become accustomed to in recent years.
She smelled the same, Kevin noted, a sweet, floral scent he could pick up with those helpful vulpimancer senses. Likewise, he could hear the way her heartbeat wasn’t quite steady around him. Time didn’t change everything.
He tilted his head, humming thoughtfully. “That doesn’t sound like me.”
“I’m serious,” she said, and he caught her fingers twitch against the badge.
With a swig, Kevin emptied the remains of his drink and dropped the glass heavily onto the bar. Gwendolyn’s eyes narrowed, so close to his own, and he could almost kiss her as his arm morphed into a diamond blade that shot out for her stomach.
The sharpened point cracked hard against a flat orb of pink mana, veering off at an angle, and Gwendolyn’s palm caught him under his scarred chin, a blow so fierce it flipped him backwards off his stool.
To a normal human, that uppercut might have been dangerous enough to cut the wire of his consciousness, but Kevin was, above all, a freak of nature. He knew that much, and he rode the momentum of her strike into a turn that let him swipe at her with a roundhouse kick to the head.
His foot, now splintered and red with blazing heat, smashed against her forcefield yet again, this time hard enough to throw her sideways into the bar. He rotated on his hands, pushing off and landing on all fours a few feet away.
Gwendolyn looked flustered as she righted herself, rose-coloured light gathering around her clenched fists.
“Don’t you get bored of this?” she snapped at him. Kevin stood to meet her, ignoring the petty criminals fleeing from their tables at the sight of them facing off. “The same fight every time, just to get caught or run away with your tail between your legs?”
“I’m not scared of him, Gwendolyn,” he bit out. Little Ben Tennyson with his alien watch, no powers but the ones given to him by his betters. No cost, no consequences, just a statue of his smug face in every city, on every planet.
“Aren’t you?” Gwendolyn’s mana whipped out like a poisonous viper, and Kevin ducked in time to miss a swipe that separated more than a few strands of his hair. “Then what about me? Because I’m running out of patience with this cat and mouse game.”
Her eyes flickered, pupils disappearing into an unearthly glow as she lurched at him, flinging bolts of mana, one after the other, always aimed directly at his head.
Kevin dodged one, and then the next, and smacked the third aside with a bulging red arm that extended lightning-fast from his side, ripping against the open seams in his armoured shirt. Her energy singed the fingers black, but he couldn’t feel them anyway. Too much DNA had amalgamated in his body for him to feel much of anything these days.
Thick rope-like tentacles unravelled from his back, a gift from those nasty little guardians he’d grown so familiar with in the Null Void. He found them grotesque, and once upon a time he might have been ashamed to reveal them in Gwendolyn’s presence, but damn if they weren’t effective.
Like vines, they lashed around the uncovered pipework hanging from the ceiling, stretched taut then released, propelling him well out of her firing range and into the air. He landed by the door and she spun on her heel, another bolt already seeking him out.
Kevin deflected it with a petrosapien hand, grinning, and caught her follow-up shot across the side of his face. An angry flare of mana from her eyes burned through his cheek and consumed the helix of his right ear, leaving charred skin in its wake and a feeling closer to agony than he’d known in a long time. His head whipped back and he gritted his teeth, barking out a sonic howl that shattered the bow of energy she’d been casting to leash him.
Gwendolyn leaped away, a reactive forcefield swallowing the rest of his blast as he backed up towards the street. Helpfully, she’d blazed a gaping hole straight through the entrance and Kevin planned to make use of it.
“You?” He smiled at her with a droplet of blood beading at the corner of his upper lip, where she’d clipped him, warm and slick as it trickled into his mouth.
“Gwen, you scare the hell out of me.”

Episode 6, The Seven Chaos Princes’ Crowns
Fire was burning all around. It was inescapable. The distant sound of rushing water was not of comfort however. Waves flooded the scene and there were no means of staying afloat. It became impossible to breathe. The shadow of a man was letting out hearty laughs all the while.
“Past…Future… ”
The words cut through the chaotic event. They were clear and soothing, but there was an air of concern in the voice.
“The plant for creation, the plant for destruction... They’re waiting for the controllers.”
A light began shining. It wasn’t clear where it came from but it was blinding. Suddenly there was no more drowning, no more inferno.
“The servers are the seven chaos…”
Amy’s eyes slowly creaked open as a ray of sunlight had slipped between the closed shades of the window and landed right upon her face. She rolled out of the sun’s piercing brightness and let out an accompanying grown. “Five more minutes…” She mumbled mindlessly.
After a decent bit, Amy moseyed out from the bedroom and joined Sonic who was already in the kitchen stirring up some breakfast. “Sleep well?”
Amy let out a yawn. “Yeah…” She said without much conviction.
“Oh come on Ames, don’t lie to me. You were tossing and turning all night!” He quickly flipped the contents of the skillet before placing it back down on the stove. He moved over to the table where Amy was sitting and slid a cup of coffee in front of her. “Tell me, what’s up. More dreams?”
“Yeah…” It seems that was as much of a response she was capable of at the moment, at least until she woke up more.
The two discussed them more over breakfast. Amy told Sonic how Chuck comforted her about these dreams of hers and she made sure to remember as much as she could in case anything from them came to fruition. She even wrote some of them down and started her own dream journal. The one from the night prior for sure being noted as the new voice was surely telling some important information about ‘creation’ and ‘destruction.’
The world outside was moist after a light rain during the early morning. The sun was out but clouds occasionally obscured it and gave the air a cool brisk feel to it. The two walked around the wood surrounding the main village. The faint sound of waves mixed with the rustling of leaves in the wind. The two came across a ring of mushrooms and made sure to go around lest walk through. They discussed many things, mostly around the speculation of the recent events – Stark Ruins, the library in Cap, their run-in with the Reds from Rockbase, Chuck’s concern something menacing was afoot. They pondered what could be; evil spirits coming for vengeance, a forewarning of death. Nothing of their speculation was of the positive nature.
Meanwhile, Chuck was reading more from the Stair na Seacht at his place of study in his hut. The cool moist air battled the warmer sun as the two took turns pouring in through the window overhead. Birds were singing outside and the ambiance added peace to Chuck’s focus.
“Come ere spires…blocking…light? Blocking sun?” He looked over to another book and scanned some pages, turning them with a slow pace as he searched the text. “North the South city of trade…” He stopped reading a moment and thought aloud, “The South city of trade…”
Chuck stopped and looked out the window to see the trees. He thought of anything to avoid what he knew was inevitable if he were to find out what mysteries were starting to reveal themselves. But his concern for what may transpire outweighed his desire to keep those closest to him from venturing out in the world outside the haven of South Island. He let out a heavy sigh.
Outside, Sonic and Amy were walking back from their excursion. Knuckles and Rouge were off talking under an oak tree. Tails was sitting around with his nose deep in another book of some sorts.
As Sonic and Amy came around to the main area of the village, Chuck walked out of his hut in good timing. He looked over at Sonic with a non-verbal message that he needed to speak with him. Sonic said some words to Amy and they split as Sonic walked to join his uncle.
“Sonny boy. Enjoy your morning?”
“So far, what’s up Chuck?”
“I’ve been reading and trying to decipher the Stair na Seacht. I haven’t gotten far but there is a passage that uncovered something nearby. It doesn’t say much but something close is much more manageable than anything if it may bring more clues to what may be going on.” He explained.
“Another adventure!?” Sonic asked enthusiastically.
Chuck smiled behind his bushy mustache. “I knew you’d take pleasure in the prospects of possibly another trek into the wild. Despite my concern for your well being.”
“Uncle Chuck, you’ve done so much for us here. And you know we can keep our own. If there is anything we can do to help out your research.”
“There is.” He said quickly. He began to walk and Sonic began to follow. “There is not a lot of definitive phrasing in the book. It’s almost entirely written in riddles it seems, although I can’t tell if that’s intentional or just so old that what it tries to describe and explain was based on limited information of the world at the time.”
“What kind of riddles?” Sonic asked inquisitively.
“Some of it is plane information…mostly lore and ancient beliefs and mythos. Other parts be like directions to pieces of a puzzle that it didn’t even intend to create. It’s got me arsed if I weren’t lying.”
“So what do you need from me?”
“You and the gang, don’t you forget. Not only do I fear this involve the lot of you, you all have a tight nit that surely come in handy in a pinch. I need you to go north again, to Cap and even a bit past. I will have to owe Eiméar more for your visit a second time but–”
Sonic took the chance to make jest, “She was kind but I think we may have put up a nerve on her while we were there.”
“Oh I’ve not a doubt you did you kook.”  Chuck answered with a chuckle. He got back to the topic at hand. “The book mentions a place. I think it refers to somewhere at the base of the Sléibhte Scáthaigh north of Cap. If you can’t find anything, don’t mingle about as it doesn’t define a precise location. But it talks about something there, a text or message of sorts. I couldn’t determine exactly. But it was under a chapter referring to the emergence of ancient calamities with the talks of fire and flood. I think it’s relevant based on the runes you saw at Stark Ruins. Might give some extra clues, whatever it is there referring to. And…it wouldn’t hurt to investigate as it will still take some time for me to study the book further.”
“Chuck, you know we’re your guys for the job!” Sonic said with a bounce of his words.
“Ha!” Chuck laughed a bit. “Oh I know you are lad.” His cheery tone at Sonic’s response faded back to emotions of concern as his deepest fear still lingered on his mind; the world could be consumed with darkness and he wouldn’t care so long as he knew Sonic and the rest of his friends and all those in South Island were safe from harm. But he knew there was much at stake and feared it directly involved those he was trying to protect. “Go grab your crew. I’ll let you all decide on when you want to make this journey. The last one was more trying on you than I had ever hoped it to be.”
With that, Sonic departed and bolted off to join the others. Tails was the first one he told as he wouldn’t even consider going anywhere without his best friend and ‘little bro’ as he says. Next was Amy who showed a fair share of concern but also intrigue at the prospect of uncovering more of the world’s secrets. Her dreams were definitely a factor in wanting to know more as well. Knuckles acted annoyed as he would with even the simplest of requests but took the opportunity to give Sonic some slagging saying he saved them last time and they could use his help. Rouge felt similar in the sense of watching out for the group, not so much in the poking fun at them part.
They decided to give it another day or so before heading out. Knuckles took this time to go back to Angel Island. Nack and Bean made jest on how Knuckles was leaving his own chapter of Reds for the Cyans but he was used to this with how much of his time was divided between the two factions of the two Societies. Mighty and Ray were supportive and wished him luck as they knew the dangers of the Greater Area since they too helped rescue the Cyans from their not-so-friendly Rockbase brothers and sisters on their journey back from Cap the last time. Bark was silent as ever.
The time came for the group to depart and was once again sent off by Chuck and Vanilla. The rabbit innkeeper, always the mother, even prepared another care package for them.
The journey to Cap was much like their first, uneventful. A good thing too. They arrived again in the market and were lucky no one remembered their faces based on their last scuffle with the locals. They are a rambunctious crew but were smart and learned quickly. They didn’t want to draw any attention or break out any of their ‘abilities’ as Chuck put it. But that didn’t stop their gaze at the goods and merchandise. Knuckles was particularly fascinated by the hustle of the city. He was too used to the quiet life of Angel Island – the village at South Island was sometimes even too much for him. He would moan and scoff at every Mobians that bumped into him which was a lot based on his larger stature as they walked through the crowded streets.
“Psst, miss.” A voice called out. Amy stopped and turned her head. “Yes you! Lovely pink quills you got.” An older lady called. “I ‘member the days my quills were so well kept. What’s your name lass?” The lady was an old hedgehog covered in a shroud and had many chains beads and pendants hanging from silver wire adorned on her head and shoulders. She had a few gemmed rings and long hanging earrings.
“Um… Amy?”
“Amy, lovely. Short for Amelia?” Amy didn’t respond and continued to stare inquisitively. She looked back at the group who stopped and noticed Amy fell behind. They stood with similar curious looks as to why she stopped. “Ah, no matter.” The gypsy continued. “I can tell you’re special.”
Amy turned back to the older hedgehog. “What?”
“Dreams is it?” Amy was stunned. “Come now, I only wish to help.” Her words were warm and sincere. Amy turned back to Sonic and the others and raised a finger for them to wait a moment for her. She slowly but cautiously followed the gypsy back behind her booth and into a small dwelling.
Amy passed many odd trinkets and oddities as she continued back. The place had a warm earthly glow to it and plants were all around in pots on the floor and hanging from the ceiling. Not too far back, as the place was rather small, the gypsy was sitting at a table. On the table was a cloth with a delicate design and repeating patterns. On top the cloth was a hookah.
“Aye, no need to be alarmed. Tis as much I can say for an old hag pulling a stranger off the street.” The lady said as Amy took a seat. The lady grabbed a hose from the hookah and drew in a large inhale of the substance. She offered it to Amy but she kindly shook her head mostly not even knowing what the thing was. “I saw your lot walk by and must say you are a peculiar bunch.”
“How so?” Amy asked, trying to keep as many words to herself.
“Strong energy coming from the lot of you. Not only that, I remember you all brought quite a stir to these parts a few moons back.” She explained. Amy’s curious yet cautious expression was washed away with a pang of fear. “No need to fret lass. I don’t mind a good show every once in a while. Just happy to catch your lot back through here. Now, last I wish is to intrude but you’ve got something on your mind, something heavy.”
“You seem to already know.”
“So you’re plagued by some dreams. Foreboding yet shrouded in obscurity. I have something to help.”
“Why?”
“Why what lassy?” The lady said as she took another toke of the hookah before standing up and walking over to a shelf full of odd pieces.
“Why are you helping me? If it’s tokens you’re after I don’t have much and am less willing to give them to you. I need them for other things.” Amy explained.
“Ah, though that’d be normally what I’d ask for. Not this time.” She came back with a small box and opened it up to reveal a deck of cards. “On the house this time. However if you ever stroll through and wish to take a gander at me lot then I’d be happy to fulfill those wishes.”
Amy took out the deck of cards and scanned through them. They weren’t any normal cards she had seen being played by the locals in the tavern or out in the street. They each had separate pictures on them, trees, symbols, imagery. “What are they?”
“Tarot cards my dear. To help you translate the messages the world sends you.” She sat back down and grabbed the hose of the hookah except did not take a drag just yet.
Amy continued to look through the cards but then turned to the gypsy with a raised brow. “You never really answered. Why do you want to help me?”
“As I said, I sense a great deal of energy coming from your crew. I sensed it back at your last visit and that was just from watching you tussle around with the street folk. I too have dreams sometimes. And I’ve been waiting to come across you all again. I believe I was told to help you and that is all. I don’t make it a habit to quarrel with the will of the world.” Finally she took a long drag from the hookah and whisked out a heavy cloud of vapor.
“Is…is there anything else you know?” Amy placed the cards back in the small box and rested her hands on it.
“It is not my place, nor yours, to ask questions to the ether. But only receive their answers. This was all I know about you and for both our sakes it may be better that way. Now, I’m sure your friends want to know where you slipped off to ey?”
Amy arose out from the lady’s dwelling to see everyone there waiting for her.
“Ames, what was that about?” Sonic asked.
“I…don’t really know.” Amy answered as she held the box in her hand. She slipped them away in her small pack.
“Probably just some desperate merchant trying to sell her something. Don’t fall to these guys’ scams there girl.” Rouge said as they all started to walk off. Meanwhile the gypsy peered out from behind a curtain in the only window of her home and watched with curiosity as they left.
They made it back to the library and walked in. It did not take long to find Eiméar again, slaving over the task of sorting the books in the magnificent study. “Hello Miss Eiméar.”
They were now back in her living quarters once again drinking tea as she set up for their short stay. “I knew I’d see yer lot soon but I shant have expected this soon.” Eiméar said as they sat. “That coot decided to have you bother me yet eh?”
“We won’t be staying long, no longer than last time. Just two nights.” Rouge explained kindly. “And we again appreciate your hospitality.”
“Well if that old hedgehog keeps his word I won’t complain. As long as you stay out of trouble this time ‘round, that clear?”
“We’ll keep to ourselves.” Rouge answered once more.
“And you got a new lad with you this time. What’s your name?” She said to Knuckles as he stood off to the side.
“The name’s Knuckles. It’s nice to meet you ma’am.”
“Knuckles, well geez, ah could have placed a bet on that one with those sluggers of yours.” She motioned down to his fists. “Another friend or are you some bodyguard of sorts.”
Knuckles smiled and glared over at Sonic to which he just rolled his eyes in response to Knuckles’ leer. “Maybe a bit of both.” Knuckles answered through a grin.
“Aye. Well, what be it dis time?”
“Chuck wants us to look at some place north of here. Said it should be at the base of the Sléibhte Scáthaigh.” Sonic stated.
“The Stair na Seacht is pretty cryptic Sir Charles says. But he said there may be something there that could fill in the gaps to his studies. Maybe in a cave or a hollow. Know of anything?” Amy asked.
“That I do. There’s an old cave I’ve been told up there with old carvings on the walls. Typically an old smugglers den so best be careful if yer plan to be ‘sploring any. Could that be it?”
“Possibly!” Tails answered. “Do you know anything else about the place?”
“Afraid not. Never been meself. Just heard ‘bout it. Not too far though and quite noticeable I’ve been told, but best go in the morning before the sun is past high. They don’t call em the mountains of shade for nothing.” She looked over at Knuckles again. “And best bring your bodyguard of sorts too. It’s abandoned I hear now but ya never know.”
The morning came quickly and the group set off to see this place. They initially ventured east to hit the base of the Sléibhte Scáthaigh and paralleled it north. There was nothing of particular interest for a good distance. They scanned out to the west in the open area before the mountains rose out from the land like towers but also checked directly at their base in case it was hidden before the sudden cliffs.
“Look!” Tails shouted as he was flying high above the rest for a better vantage. “I think I see something!” He zoomed down to their level and dropped down stirring up a little sand as he landed. “There is an outcropping of rocks and boulders not too far from here. Looks out of place, could be what we’re looking for.”
“Great job buddy! I’ll go ahead and scout it out to see and to make sure no one is around.” Before any objection from the crew Sonic sped off in the distance. It took not even a full minute for him to return. “I think he’s right! There is a sizable opening in the rocks. Didn’t see anyone around either.” Without another word he zoomed off again. Tails quickly sped off to join him. Knuckle and Amy ran as quick as they could in the looser ground and Rouge fluttered alongside them.
They reached the structure and saw it to be exactly as Sonic loosely described, a cave with an opening big enough for the tallest of Mobians to walk right in. They made their way down the entrance. Tails dug through his small pack and grabbed a flashlight. It flicked on and they ventured down. The light wasn’t entirely necessary however as a short bit past the entrance was the darkest part. Natural light began to illuminate the burrow through openings in the ceiling.
Soon they came into a decent sized room, one slightly bigger than any of their huts back at South Island. Closer to the hallway that was the entrance was some crates covered in sand and dust. They seemed abandoned and forgotten but the group took note not to stay long in case their owners made a return.
[x]
The sight beyond that was strange and mystical but beautiful. The light from the high sun poured down through the openings and glistened along the yellow and red rocky walls. It was surprisingly moist there and small puddles were scattered on the cave floor until they grew in size where they reached a small pool at the end of the cavern. The grotto there had two large very out of place trees arising from the pool. They arose tall through a large hole in the ceiling. They were amazed they couldn’t see the trees from outside but figured they may have been shielded by other taller rocks that jut out around the place.
One tree was an ash tree, forked into two halves. Intertwined with the ash tree was a white fir that rose up strong. In the pool were some reeds as well. The fact that all these trees were found in a cave was surprising. The water there must have softened the ground to make for a strong root system and the sun shining through must have been sufficient to keep the trees alive but the less than ideal environment surely stunted their growth.
“Hey guys, there’s something along the lines of what Chuck was thinking I think over here?” Knuckles was over by the wall and pointed to some carvings and etching there.
“Ogham!” Tails shouted as he and the others moved over to investigate. Sure enough, a series of lines with hatches and marks were all over the walls of the cave. There was too much scattered around to take note of all the etchings but they examined them nonetheless.
“Surely we won’t be able to write all these inscriptions down for Sir Charles, there are just too much!” Amy pointed out.
“He told me that more than often the writing was used more to inscribe names for memorials or markers for tribes and boundaries. There are a lot of random inscriptions. I don’t want to miss anything but maybe many of these are like that.” Tails said.
“Kind of like a ‘Sonic was here’ thing?” Sonic said half joking as he scratched his finger over some of the carvings.
Tails gave a chuckle. “Probably. Let’s try and see if anything sticks out.”
“There’s something over here.” Amy called out as she was over closer to the trees. “There seems to be more structure to these. Not only that…” She signaled everyone over, “runes!” There were only a few but the symbol ᚦ was followed by the laguz ᛚ that they knew from Stark Ruins. Then again with the first, followed by cen ᚳ and above both was the symbol ᚫ.
“There’s one on the tree too.” Rouge pointed out. On the white fir was an aged engraving, hardly made out but appeared to be another rune, ᛇ.
Surrounding the runes Amy found was a long vertical line of ogham inscriptions that appeared more like text than the others which just resembled single words.
Tumblr media
“If anything let’s write these down for Sir Charles.” Amy suggested. They did so and stayed a little while taking more looks around. They wrote down things here and there that they thought might be of interest. The sun that illuminated the grotto was now passed and little light was shining through the ceiling. They took this as time to make their leave and head back to Eiméar. It was early afternoon and with how close to the Sléibhte Scáthaigh they were, the sun was already starting to fall behind the mountains to the east.
They made it back to Cap with no trouble and divulged to Eiméar what they had found. She again told them that though she was familiar with every text in the library, she wasn’t so familiar with all their context and that Chuck would know more. She also suggested Chuck hand them some transcript to readily read runes and ogham if they were to be out doing more of Chuck’s ‘research.’ They made sure to suggest the same to Chuck once they got back.
The day had past and they settled in their own ways for their trek the next day. Tails was running about in the library picking up and reading books of interest. Rouge dragged Knuckles to the market and they promised not to cause any trouble. Sonic and Amy were talking together over tea.
“So she just…gave these to you?” Sonic asked as Amy had the tarot cards sprawled out in front of her.
“Yeah, it was…odd. She said she knew we were special. Also recognized us from our fights in the market last time. She somehow knew I was having strange dreams. I couldn’t say no to taking them especially as a gift.” She explained.
“As long as they aren’t ‘cursed’ or something.” Sonic said in his typical manner of unserious humor.
“No, I think she was sincere. I just am not entirely sure how to go about using these things. There is a placard describing each of the cards but… it’s still a bit confusing.” She was focused hard on trying to remember the cards and their descriptions and the different meanings behind them and how to read them.
Later that evening Rouge and Knuckles returned and Tails was back with a tired brain. The crew went to sleep and awoke to get ready to travel back. They gave their regard to Eiméar once again and thanked her for her hospitality. She now was surer than ever she would see them again and this time expected it to be soon.
Thankfully the journey back was much less exciting than their last trip from Cap back to South Island. They made it home with enough time for Chuck to not grow any concern. He met with them at once on what they had found.
“After last time I was concerned about setting you out again but I guess you have proven that you don’t always run into trouble.” He said with a smirk.
“I told you we were the guys for the job!” Sonic said proudly.
Chuck shook his head lightheartedly. He looked at the notes they made for him and studied them. “You said these were carved in the wall of a grotto?”
“They were. It was weird, in the middle of the barren land north of Cap, here was this little cave with two large trees growing in the rock!” Amy exclaimed.
“Two trees huh?”
“Yeah, an ash and a white fir were growing together. Some reeds too in the pond surrounding them.” Tails continued to explain.
“An ash tree, a white fir and reeds…?” Chuck seemed interested.
“Yeah. And then a BUNCH of ogham inscriptions on the wall.” Sonic spoke up. “Too much for us to write but Tails said you said most of ogham was used for names and markers so we only wrote down a few. But there was one in particular.”
Chuck cut him off. “The one by the runes?”
“That’s the one.”
“Hmm…” Chuck started stroking his mustache as he did when in deep thought. “Cen and laguz like you saw at Stark. And what seems to be thurisaz before them and ansuz above them.”
“Yeeaahhh… Sure.” Sonic said unfamiliar with the seemingly foreign language his uncle was speaking.
“There was another carved into the fir. It was faded but it should be there on the notes too.” Rouge added.
“Ihwaz.” Chuck said all the while writing down his own notes and flipping through a book in doing so. The group sat patient and with intrigue, with the exception of Knuckles who was in the corner chewing on a stalk of grass. “Interesting…” He said aloud as he continued to investigate.
It took a moment before he finished up and turned back to the group. All of their ears perked up simultaneously with interest at what he had to say. “The thurisaz is a rune meaning giants or strong ones, often in association with a conflict. Ansuz quite literally meaning ‘the gods’ and you already are familiar with cen and laguz, fire and water. So these tell me something about giants or gods of fire and water, possibly in some conflict.” He looked up at Amy as he and her were likely thinking the same thing – her dreams seemed to show some stalemate battle between the two forces. He continued, “And the ogham, seacht anord flaith coróin. Seven Chaos Prince Crown.”
“Seven chaos prince crown? I mean, I get the first half Chuck.” Sonic called out.
“There is an old legend saying the Lords of Seven each wore a crown that had a different shard of chaos bestowed upon them. I don’t know much more beyond that in terms of their significance. But these Lords were said to have immense power.” He answered.
“And the rest of the ogham? Any more hints from that old dead language?” Tails insisted on knowing more.
“Hmf,” Chuck scoffed, “dead language. It’s not just dead, and much less a language in the way we use the common tongue. It’s ancient. Found only in old text about ancient times and myths. I had forgotten entirely about it until you came across it at Stark Ruins. But you were right in that it seems the other inscriptions were nothing more than names and markers. An ‘I was here’ kind of thing.”
“Ha! I knew it.” Sonic said gleefully as he was softly elbowing Amy.
“Shh!” She shushed him so Chuck could continue.
“Why was the ogham in Stark in the common tongue then? And also the rune in the tree?” Rouge asked.
“Ah, well that is another mystery. Maybe whatever forces did that horrific deed at Stark knew who ever would stumble across it would only know the common tongue. But then again, why even make it ogham…” He said more so as a question to himself. “As for the tree, it was ihwaz or yew. Odd to label the tree as if anyone wouldn’t recognize the kind of tree it was. But the yew and even the ihwaz was a symbol in lore of death and resurrection.”
“From Chaos comes creation and creation ends with destruction.” Amy muttered.
“Yes, but creation also come from destruction.” Chuck mused. “And endless cycle of death and rebirth. You should all know this from our,” Chuck and Knuckles made brief eye contact, “from your respective ceremonies. One of the few beliefs all Societies have in common.”
“What of those crowns you mentioned?” Knuckles finally spoke up. Though stoic as he liked to be, he couldn’t help but also be intrigued by the information.
“I think there might be more to them than just ornamental pieces associated to folklore. I only know of one currently in existence and even then there is speculation on whether it is in fact one of the Lord’s crowns or just an ancient artifact from a time long passed. Last I heard it lay locked away in secret in a museum in the city of Westport, many many hundreds of miles from here.” Chuck further explained.
“If it’s locked away in secret, how do you know of this thing?” Sonic asked.
“Because I’m the one that found it.” They all froze in perplexion. “But that is a story for another time. I will need to read the Stair na Seacht more to see if this trail of crumbs is worth following. Go get a pint of gat at the tavern and rest up from your journey. I’ll let you know if I uncover anything of worth.” They all got up and moved out the door. “Amy, a word if you don’t mind dear.”
Amy looked at Sonic and he gave her a shrug. She’d join them shortly. Chuck moved over to the sink and began washing his hands. “I know you and I are both thinking similar thoughts.” He finished rinsing his hands and turned to further explain. “Whether from ancient myths or omens of future, your dreams are connected to this vast riddle we’ve been investigating and exploring. Fire and flood…” He paused, “I fear something of the sorts may come to transpire. And a human you said?” Amy nodded. “I think we need to find these ‘crowns’ before whatever man in your dreams does.”

Fuze/Wolf oneshot in which Wolf can’t sleep and Fuze assists. (Rating G/T, emotional hurt/comfort + fluff, ~2.7k words) - written for @viral-marketer!! ♥♥ Thank you for the commission and I’m very happy you enjoyed this piece :) I’ll link more information on Wolf as soon as it’s available, and you can find my commission info here!
.
Sudden panic makes Wolf’s stomach drop. It’s as if she’s lost a limb, like the time a firecracker exploded in her hand because she didn’t realise the fuse actually took to the pitiful flame from her dying lighter and she couldn’t feel her fingers for ten minutes, like getting up too fast and almost blacking out. Like the time -
There’s no necessity to finish that thought, the memory burns white hot in her mind as it is, every time they’re on a mission, every time she shrinks away from a loud, unexpected noise, every time it happens with Boomer out of her sight. Just like now.
Her weapon falls to the ground with a clatter she barely hears as she dives head first into rubble, hitting her elbows on collapsed pieces of concrete, attempting to push past the debris, force her way through the entryway which is no more after part of the abandoned building collapsed to block it completely, trapping Wolf on this side and -
And Boomer on the other.
There are voices she doesn’t acknowledge, a hand on her upper arm she shakes off violently, and by now she’s drenched in sweat, frantic and desperate, claws at the obstacle hard enough to break a nail or two even through the gloves, hardly noticing the pain over the screeching in her head – it’s her own voice screaming at her, telling her she’s too late, she’s not going to make it, and it only ceases once an iron grip yanks her back, a tall figure towering over her and regarding her with concern.
“It’s alright, Grays”, Montagne informs her quietly yet doesn’t let her arm go, probably recognises the deafening static in her head, louder than the radio chatter, louder even than the pounding staccato of her heart. “Tina got him. Calm down.”
A myriad of questions pop up simultaneously but she gives the mountain of a man the benefit of the doubt, listens to comms for a moment and finds his words confirmed: the operators on the other side of the building sound carefree, relieved, someone mentions excited tail wagging and yes, Montagne speaks the truth. They just finished their mission successfully, the explosion separating her and Boomer marking the tail end of the fight.
Slowly, reality creeps back in, makes her feel the ground under her feet keenly as if it was something she’d been missing for the last week. Her breath evens out after a few deep inhales and eventually, Montagne lets her go with a reassuring nod, after which she looks around the room to gather her bearings. The sideglances she earns make her face flush and shame pool in her stomach – she must’ve been obvious in her panic, possibly pathetic in her flailing, certainly not behaving like a professional at all, but the noise and not being able to see her dog and the memories -
“Don’t worry about it, happens to all of us.” Montagne’s soothing baritone is doing wonders for her nerves. “You did well regardless.”
And the way he pats her shoulder stays with her until they’ve left the building, a reminder that people place their trust in her and she hasn’t let them down, a gesture she appreciates fiercely. She was focused when it counted, certainly assisting the organised assault, with Boomer even saving Blackbeard’s life at some point with his quick reflexes and instant reaction to her monosyllabic command. She did well indeed.
But she finds no rest until she spots Fuze, him of all people, carrying the energetic bundle of joy in his arms and struggling to hold on as Boomer tries to flail out of his grasp, eventually succeeding and rushing over to Wolf’s side for much-deserved ear scratches and praise.
“Your stupid mutt almost jumped out of the window when he saw you”, the Uzbek grumbles. It’s very clearly an invitation, a familiar song and dance they perform regularly, usually centred around Boomer – it started when Fuze first met her, not an hour after she arrived in Hereford, his first words being: I don’t like dogs. He might’ve claimed so but showcased very obviously that he does like bickering with a tiny American woman and thus Boomer has become a fantastic conversation starter between the two of them, with Fuze complaining about perfectly normal dog behaviour and Wolf enlightening him on this fact, and it usually ends in pancake recipes or the correct way to hide a body.
Normally, Wolf would gladly accept this invitation, but with her thoughts still in disarray, pulse too quick and fingers shaking, all she does is hug her dog and bury her face in his fur, seeking solace as well as support. He’s alive. He’s well. He made it.
It’s the mantra she repeats to herself all the way back to base.
.
That evening, she tidies up her kitchen. Not that it was necessary, not really, but taking out all the glassware and ceramics, lining them up on the counter and her table only to put them back in different places as if they were playing musical chairs soothes her, oddly enough. Cleaning isn’t a chore she enjoys and yet she dusts all the shelves, mops her entire flat and eventually catches herself eyeing the furniture in her bedroom, wondering whether she could rearrange it somehow to give it a new look and, most importantly, a new feel.
This is when she understands what she’s doing.
It doesn’t stop her, or else she wouldn’t choose to cook for herself after a day as stressful and exhausting like the one she had, and definitely not a recipe which requires her to chop a ridiculous amount of vegetables. She keeps herself busy. Not only that, she carries her phone around with her and makes it blare her favourite music, upbeat melodies accompanying the sizzling in the pan and tricking her into singing or humming along. When she eats, she does so in front of the TV, Boomer curled up next to her on the couch and doing what she’s desperately trying to avoid: sleeping.
Eyelids heavy, she forces herself to follow a generic action film, then another, playing around on her phone in the meantime, the stimulation keeping her distracted up to the point where she nearly dozes off despite the noise and flickering lights.
She’s scared, she realises belatedly. But she knows one person who can help.
Sometimes, Fuze can’t sleep either, though his condition sounds less like self-imposed insomnia and more like something out of his control, and maybe, just maybe, today is one of those days. Thumb hovering over the screen, she hesitates, mulls her decision over but eventually presses down, trepidation settling in her chest. She neither wants to be a bother nor come off as needy, but Fuze has never objected to her random messages, never once voiced any protest about early morning photos of sunrises or useless trivia she found online and, as she’s come to understand, lack of protest implies approval – at least with the Uzbek.
Communicating with him has been… strenuous at times. Anxiety and taciturnity usually don’t mix well and in the beginning, Fuze’s unflappable demeanour intimidated her immensely, but something pulled her towards the quiet man nonetheless, convinced her to keep trying. Being part of his friend group was the first step, allowing her to hover in his vicinity and direct questions at him now and then, though his monosyllabic replies briefly demotivated her. Glaz came to her rescue, however, by pointing out Fuze rarely even acknowledges others, let alone offer to do favours. And Wolf looked down at the phone Fuze voluntarily fixed after she’d dropped it the previous week; he didn’t require any prompting, merely overheard her mention it to Kapkan (who’d been enthusiastically petting Boomer, it seems the Russian really appreciates other hunters) and wordlessly held out his hand.
Over time, she’s come to realise that the silences between them are of a comfortable quality and the longer she watches him, the better she understands. Whenever anyone sits in his vicinity who’s too loud or whom he doesn’t like, he changes seats. If someone attempts to rope him into a conversation while he’s working, he lets them know not to bother him. His bluntness, too, was daunting – what if she incurred his ire herself? But despite her regularly barging in to ask him something while his clever fingers are tinkering away, he never turns her down, never once rebuked her.
And this is why she messages him, a simple: do you know the earliest man-made sonic boom?
She knows he enjoys fun facts like this, especially when it’s one he can figure out by himself. After pressing send, she stupidly waits and stares at the indicator telling her whether he’s received and read her question for entirely too long before deciding to relocate. Maybe she could go for a walk with Boomer, yet when she gets up and stretches her aching limbs, remnants of the bomb disposal mission they completed much too early in the day for her comfort, the animal by her side makes no move to follow her. Compassionate, dark eyes glance at her in defiance and Boomer makes himself as heavy as possible when she tries to pick him up. It’s his way of telling her it’s long past her usual bed time.
A small buzz catches her attention and she wakes up her phone to check Fuze’s answer, a simple, sincere: Let me think.
Wolf feels her lips stretch, her chest lighten, her restlessness diminish just knowing that he’s up, that he’s definitely thinking of her, holding his device in his steady fingers and pondering her prompt earnestly because it’s what he does. He’s always taken her seriously, it’s one of his traits she appreciates the most – not only is he honest, he also humours her whenever possible.
Spontaneously changing her plans, she gets ready for bed instead of forcing herself to stay up, going through her routine with a spring in her step and excitedly glancing at her phone repeatedly. It wouldn’t be the first time for her to text Fuze until she dozed off with it in her hand and more often than not, her sleep ended up uninterrupted as a result. She suddenly looks forward to diving under her covers and once she does, Boomer trots over now that the threat of her dragging him outside has vanished.
When instead of a soft vibration, the beginning chords of Rasputin begin to play (and whenever she hears it, she remembers Fuze’s adorable blush and mock indignation when she informed him of his new personalised ring tone), she jumps but accepts the call while snuggling deeper under her blankets.
“It’s a whip crack”, Fuze’s calm voice speaks into her ear, sparking a comfortable shudder running down her spine. “Isn’t it?”
“Did you look it up?” She knows he didn’t. He might be prideful but not arrogant, feels no need to appear smarter before her than he is.
“No. But it’s too loud and produces sound even in the air, so it’s not the end hitting the ground which causes the noise.”
“You’re right that it’s a sonic boom, but it’s not the earliest.”
She can almost hear his vague frustration and suppresses a giggle when she’s met with silence for a minute while he clearly racks his brain for the actual answer. There’s defeat underlining his words when he finally admits: “I give up. I don’t know.”
“It’s part of Glaz’ breakfast”, she hints and buries one of her hands in Boomer’s soft fur.
Another minute of silence. “Cornflakes?”
“Yes! Crunchy food breaks faster than the speed of sound. So if he ever chews again with his mouth open, tell him to turn down his sonic booms.”
Fuze snorts, audibly amused. “Tell that to your mutt. Sounds like he lives up to his name whenever he chomps on his dry food.”
They chat a little more, inconsequential and idle banter but Wolf eventually realises she hasn’t been this relaxed all day, never allowed her thoughts to wander for fear of where they’d land. But like this, surrounded by the safety of her home, listening to the even breaths of her dog and Fuze’s dry humour, it’s hard to imagine a world not filled with bliss and tranquillity.
“You should sleep, Grayson. It’s late enough”, Fuze reminds her after a lull in conversation.
“And what about you?”
“I’ll sleep too. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Wait”, she cuts in before he can end the call. Getting used to his direct style of communication was a process and she had to witness Fuze hanging up on people mid-sentence if he deemed their talk finished before realising that he extended her every courtesy in their calls. Words tingle on her tongue and uncertainty paralyses her momentarily but she’d somehow feel dishonest if she kept quiet about this. “I – had a flashback. Earlier today. Almost a panic attack. Did you hear -”
“Yes”, comes the instant reply and it’s obvious he’s been waiting for her to mention it – he wouldn’t done so himself, wouldn’t have wanted to make her feel weak. “Are you alright now?” She makes a soft affirmative noise and glances over at Boomer whose twitching paws indicate that he’s dreaming. “I’m worried.”
The admission makes her heart skip a beat, even though he’s probably referring to her work. Has to be. “Don’t be, I’ll get the job done no matter what.”
“I’m not worried about that, I know you’d never let any of us down.” The way he dismisses the implication of her potentially failing any of her colleagues causes pride and affection to bloom in her chest. There’s no room for doubt in his statement and she’s immensely grateful for the faith he places in her. “I’m worried about you. You can’t save everyone, you know. And you can’t let this fact weigh you down. I know you’re used to getting overlooked but you’re damn good at what you do – don’t let your past rule over your future. You might miss out on opportunities along the way.”
She knows what he’s referring to. After a long day, they sat alone in the workshop, Fuze’s project forgotten on the table between them, atmosphere serene and facilitating honesty – she admitted to being afraid of getting close to anyone in Rainbow. She talked about Nitro, about the helplessness she felt upon having to watch him die, and about the random visions of anyone she liked getting killed on a mission. About how she tries not to let this influence her behaviour; she still seeks people out, opens up to them, listens raptly. But the underlying fear is always there.
“Yeah”, she agrees quietly. “I’ll try.” It’s all she can promise him.
.
The next day is of a comfortingly different quality, allowing for genuine laughs, and is much more lenient with someone who only caught a few hours of sleep. She does chuckle at Fuze’s bleary face when they see each other for the first time, but it gets stuck in her throat when he wordlessly pulls her into a hug out of the blue. The embrace doesn’t last long but coming from him, it leaves her reeling nonetheless, unfocused for the first few hours and… dreamy. The feeling of his arms around her never really goes away.
At some point, Glaz joins her, notices her dazed expression and asks: “Bad sleep?” Following her tired nod, he adds: “I figured. I heard Shuhrat’s phone go off last night.”
“Oh, did he forget to mute it?”
The Russian sends her an odd look. “He never puts it on silence when he sleeps, in fact I think he even turns up the volume. And you’re the only one who messages him in the middle of the night. Otherwise he’d sleep like a baby.”
And oh. That’s -
It’s impossible, there have been so many nights which they texted away, yet she neglected to ask for details on his alleged insomnia, and this means -
She completely misses whatever it is he tells her next, merely nods along as her thoughts are going haywire until she eventually rudely interrupts him: “Sorry, I gotta go.” And as she gets up and hurries over to where she suspects the Uzbek to be, she remembers Fuze’s words from the night before.
He’s not an opportunity she’d ever forgive herself for missing out on.

Mario & Sonic: Dimensional Shift - Chapter 1: The Cause Pt. 1
Doctor Eggman barges through the doors of his base, the tips of his mustache singed and a grizzly scowl on his face. He stomps over to his supercomputer and begins to type angrily, muttering insults and swears under his breath.
Orbot rolls over to Eggman and moves to his side. “What’s wrong, boss? Did your plans surprisingly fail again?”
Eggman backhands Orbot away with a grunt. “Quiet you! I don’t need attitude from scrap metal like you!”
Cubot quickly moves to Eggman’s other side. “Aw, don’t worry boss! You’ll get it next time, for sure! One hundred and eight times the charm, right?”
“Grr, I said SHUT IT!” Eggman stands up and kicks Cubot, who reverts into his cube form before hitting the wall. Eggman begins to pace about the room. “I could conquer this world anytime I wanted! If it wasn’t for that… that… blue nuisance!” He kicks some equipment over in anger. “It’s unfair! It’s frustrating! I can’t conquer my own planet, I can’t conquer alien planets, what am I supposed to do to get a win for once!?”
“Too bad you can’t live in a universe where there’s no Sonic,” Orbot says as he lazily lies on his side. “Now that would be a perfect universe. But alas, you seem to be doomed to a life of constant failure. How about some tea to calm down? I suggest chamomile.”
Eggman stops pacing. “Wait, say that again.”
“Chamomile tea? It’s known to have calming properties to soothe people.”
“No, the other thing.”
“Oh, you mean how you are stuck being a constant failure?”
Eggman hits Orbot over the head. “No Dumbot!! The part where you mentioned a universe without Sonic!” His glasses glint for a moment as he rushes over to his computer. “That gives me a wonderful idea!”
“What’re you gonna do, boss? Erase Sonic from the universe?” Cubot asks.
“You think I haven’t tried that? What do you think I’ve been doing all these years? I’ve tried bending reality to defeat him, and every single time he’s found a way to overcome it! No, I have to go farther! Farther than ever before! I must reach into another universe!”
“Dimensional travel?” Orbot tilts his head. “Now this sounds familiar. Hasn’t such a feat been accomplished already before?”
“Indeed, by Sonic’s friend, Blaze,” Eggman articulates, “However, from what I’ve observed, she only has the knowledge of transporting herself and a few others between dimensions. I also have experience with dimensional travel, from when I worked with my counterpart from Blaze’s universe. But this time it’s different. I want to bring an entire army through to an entirely different dimension! I’ll conquer their world, expand my army, and create my Eggman Empire, with no Sonic to stop me! And then, when I’ve become unstoppable, I’ll return and destroy Sonic with my vast new army! It’s foolproof! Ohohoho!”
Cubot breaks the Doctor’s laughter. “But boss, how are you gonna do that? That seems like a lot of power you’re gonna need, and to power that you’re gonna need-”
“The Chaos Emeralds,” Eggman interrupts. “By my calculations, I’ll need at least a few of them for this project.” He begins to stroke his mustache as he thinks for a moment. “Or perhaps, a single large Emerald. Yes… And I know just the sucker to trick for it!”
------
A new morning sun overlooks a series of grassy hills, with shadows of several large puffy clouds providing shade over the countryside. The grass sways gently from side to side over the beautiful spring hills. The gentle breeze is cut off by a sudden blue wind, zipping over one hill to the next, before coming to a stop upon a wonderful hill that overlooks the landscape.
Sonic looks over the area with a smile as he sits upon the grass, taking out a packed lunch. He lets out a sigh of relaxation as he lays down and rest his eyes, crossing his legs and putting his hands behind his head. “Man, it’s been a while since I’ve taken some time to myself. It’s nice. It’s good to remind myself that I’m able to slow down and take in the world around me.”
As Sonic sinks into relaxation, his empty mind is broken by the sound of his telecommunicator. He pulls it out and presses the button to talk. “You’ve reached Sonic the Hedgehog, please leave a message after the BA-WONK,” he says with a joking tone.
“Sonic, you need to come over to my lab as soon as you can,” Tails says through the telecommunicator. “Something urgent has come up.”
“How urgent can it be? We just stopped Eggman a few weeks ago, right? I think we’re good for now.”
“Sonic, it’s Silver. He’s come back from the future again.”
Sonic’s eyes snap open as the gravity sets in. Silver coming usually meant something was on its way. “Right, I’m on my way.” He jumps up, pops the chili dog he packed quickly into his mouth, and makes haste to the lab.
-------
The door to Tail’s lab slams open as Sonic rushes in, stopping on a dime right before he would make impact with a table. He straightens up and walks over to the other members of the room, consisting of Tails and Silver.
“Hey guys, came as fast as I could,” Sonic says. “So what world-breaking event are we dealing with this time, huh? Can we make a bet? I wanna bet Tails ten rings it has something to do with big purple worms. Oh, I bet they spit acid from their mouths!”
Silver shrugs a little bit. “I wish it was that simple. At least purple worms could be dealt with. This time it’s kind of just… weird. Usually the bad futures I return to are on fire, or are in some sort of eternal darkness. But when I returned to my time it was… uh… odd. There were tall mushrooms planted everywhere, and the only inhabitants there was these odd robot creatures. They were like robots that looked like brown mushrooms and turtles. Here, I drew a picture of what they kind of look like.” He holds up a crudely drawn picture of a brown mushroom robot with feet attached to its body.
“Dude, you suck at drawing.” Sonic says as he snickered behind his hand.
Silver looks a little dejected by this comment. “Okay, I know it’s not the best, but it’s not far off from what it actually looks like. It was weird, these things just wandered around aimlessly, but when they saw me they got aggressive and slowly charged at me. They didn’t pose much threat, but I couldn’t communicate with them at all. Any civilizations I found were just… ruins. I couldn’t find any living person. I didn’t know what to do, so I came back to the past to find the answer.”
“No problem at all!” Sonic wags his finger confidently. “You said they were robots, right? All signs point to Eggman, obviously! It always does. We just gotta go find him again, and kick his butt like we always do!”
“Hang on Sonic,” Tails interjects. “I don’t think we should necessarily jump to that conclusion just yet. First of all, I don’t think mushrooms are really Eggman’s style of choice for decoration. And look at this robot design, it’s so impractical! It doesn’t even have hands. Unless it was a giant fish robot, I know that Eggman wouldn’t create a robot that couldn’t even hold a blaster or have some sort of bladed appendages.”
Sonic rubs the tip of his nose with his finger. “Hm, I guess you’re right about that, Tails. But on the other hand, we don’t have any other leads on who it could possibly be. Do we know anyone who might know a possible villain with an interest for weird mushroom decoration? Where’s Amy at?”
“She’s off doing reconstruction in Jasmine Town right now,” Tails replies.
“Hm, that’s a few days run at least. How about the Chaotix?”
“Last I heard, off solving a case at Casino Park.”
“Shadow or Rouge?”
“You know we can’t find them unless they want us to find them.”
“Well that’s disheartening. And we know that Knuckles is on Angel Island, so it’s not like he would know anything special.”
Just then, a foot kicks open the door to the lab, and a familiar red echidna barges inside. “Guys, I have bad news! Eggman is planning to steal the Chaos Emeralds! We have to stop him!”
Sonic raises an eyebrow. “Well, speak of Black Doom, we were just talking about you, Knuckles. A hello would have been nice, you know. How do you know Eggman is gonna steal the emeralds?”
“I got this letter, it’s a tip that Eggman plans to steal a Chaos Emerald in Chun-Nan soon! We have to hurry! Come on Tails, fire up the Tornado!” Knuckles exclaims.
Tails strokes his chin. “Chun-Nan? That’s halfway across the world. I feel like he would try to find something a little closer, right? Knuckles, let me see that letter.” He takes the letter from Knuckles and reads it over.
“Who gave you this letter, Knuckles?” Silver asks.
“Not sure, I found it on the ground near the temple. I assume it’s from someone who wanted to warn me about Eggman’s next plan. I had a gut feeling I had to take action, and I always trust my gut.”
“So let me get this straight,” Sonic says as he pinches the bridge of his nose. “You got an anonymous letter from someone that somehow got onto your floating island telling you to go halfway across the world? Is that about right?”
“Yeah, that’s the gist of it.”
Sonic, Tails, and Silver all look at each other with disappointment but not surprise.
Tails grabs his keys and opens his hanger bay. “Okay, let’s get into the Tornado. We’re going to Angel Island, everyone.”
Knuckles looks shocked. “Wait, why?! We need to get to Chun-Nan! Why are we going to Angel Island?”
“Because you just got duped, dude,” Sonic says with a small smirk.
“What?! What do you mean?!”
“Eggman totally hoodwinked you. He’s probably got the Master Emerald as we speak.”
“No way! I put the Master Emerald in a secret place whenever I have to leave the island!” Knuckles says, his face now red with embarrassment.
“Is it under the temple?” Sonic says with a raised eyebrow.
“Wait, how did you-”
“Yeah, everyone knows you put it under the temple.”
Knuckles is now fuming with anger. “That- that two timing son of a lizard! I’m gonna tear him to shreds!” He charges out to the hanger bay and climbs into the Tornado. “Come on! Hurry up!”
Silver shrugs to himself as he follows Sonic and Tails out to the plane. “Wow, and I thought I was manipulated easily.”
----
After a quick trip to the floating Angel Island, Tails lands the Tornado right outside the temple where the Master Emerald resides. Knuckles is quick to jump out and makes a mad dash to the altar. His entrance is followed by a loud “GAH” and a few swears.
The rest of the gang follows inside to find Knuckles on his hands and knees next to an empty alter. Sonic comes next to him and puts a hand on his shoulder. “Sorry, buddy. I know this sucks, but I’m surprised you got manipulated so easily. You’re not as gullible as that usually, what happened?”
“I- I don’t know… I just got a gut feeling and I just had the overwhelming urge to try and stop Eggman. I guess I just wanted to believe that I needed to help for the greater good…”
Silver looks over the scene of the crime. “Well whatever happened, it looks like Eggman was able to grab the Master Emerald thanks to your absence.”
Knuckles stands up all of a sudden and gets real close to Silver’s face. “You think I don’t know that, silver boy?! Don’t think you can talk down to me just because I made a mistake!”
Silver backs up a little bit. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean-”
“Don’t think that just because you have fancy mind powers and can time travel that you can act like you’re better than me!” Knuckles pokes Silver in the chest lightly, pushing him back into a wall. “I don’t need powers to pulverize you any day!”
Sonic moves in between Silver and Knuckles, pushing Knuckles back to give some space between them. “Knuckles, calm down! He wasn’t trying to insult you, he was just making an observation. Don’t take out your anger on him because of what Eggman did.”
Knuckles crosses his arms in annoyance. “Whatever. How do we even know it was Eggman, anyway? I could name a few treasure thieves off the top of my head, especially a certain batty burglar.”
“I’m not so sure about that,” Tails pipes up. “Come take a look at what I found on the ground.” He holds up a small red card sporting a familiar logo of a smiling mustached head, along with the words “SUCKER!” etched into the back.
“Yup, that’s definitely Eggman’s calling card,” Sonic says, taking the card and observing it. “He’s not the sneakiest thief, that’s for sure.”
Knuckles punches his fists together. “What a smug little-! That’s it! I say we march right over to his base and kick him in his nuts and bolts!”
“I wish we could,” Tails says. “But we have no idea where he’s located right now. He changes bases every few months, so he could be just about anywhere right now.”
A flirtatious voice breaks through the room in response to Tails. “Maybe I could be of assistance with that?”
Everyone looks up to the ceiling to see Rouge the Bat hanging upside down with a grin, as she jumps off and floats down the floor. “Long time no see, boys.”
“Rouge! What are you doing here?” Tails asks with delight. Knuckles looks even  more peeved now.
“I’ve been following Eggman around for a few days. He’s been a pretty busy man lately. Lots of Black Market purchases of illegal materials. I followed him to Angel Island, where big red here fell for a letter that he wrote in 3 minutes. I planted a tracker on his ship as he was stealing the Master Emerald, and when I saw that you all were on your way over, I decided to stick around for a chat.”
“Well that’s convenient,” Sonic remarks.
“Wait, how did you know we were coming?” Tails asks.
“I also might have planted a tracker on the Tornado. Maybe, maybe not.” Rouge winks playfully as Tails furrows his eyebrows.
“So, will you be able to help us at all?” Silver asks. “Please, we’ll need any information you can give!”
“I could, but sadly, my feelings are very hurt because of what the red meanie said about me.” She makes a eyes-crying motion towards Knuckles, who scowls in response. “Don’t you know it’s impolite to talk about a lady behind her back?”
“Tch. Don’t act like you’re so superior. You know you would snatch the Master Emerald without hesitation given the chance. You might be a spy, but at the heart you’re still a petty thief.” Knuckles crosses his arms and turns away from Rouge.
“Oh Knuckles, do you truly think so little of me? I thought we were friends, after everything we’ve been through together. And friends help friends, right?”
Knuckles rolls his eyes. “Ha! I know what that means! You want something from us, right? You would never help us out of the ‘kindness of your heart.’”
“Of course I would! I don’t want anything right now, I just want something the Doctor has acquired as of recently.” Rouge brings up a holographic image from her bracelet, showing an image of a round blue gem with a white star on the center. “We call this beauty the Hyperspace Sapphire. It’s a magical stone that, when harnessed properly, can transport the user across space and dimensions, spanning from continents to distant planets.”
“So you want us to secure this stone when we fight Eggman, and in return you’ll give us the location to his base?” Sonic reiterates.
“Bingo, blue.”
Sonic puts his arm out for a handshake. “Sounds good to me!”
Knuckles stands in front of Sonic before he can shakes Rouge’s hand. “Hold on! Do you really think we can trust her about this? Who knows what she’s planning to do with that gem!”
Sonic pats Knuckles on the shoulder and smiles. “C’mon, Knux, let’s have a little faith here. Where are we without trust, right?” He pushes Knuckles aside gently and he shakes Rouge’s hand.
Rouge smiles. “Thank you Sonic, I’m glad someone trusts me.” She pulls away and brings up an image of a location on a map. “The Doctor is located here, in the middle of a dense jungle. You won’t be able to land your plane anywhere inside, only on a town just outside.” She drops the image and begins to head for the door. “I might meet you there later, who knows?”
Sonic gives a thumbs up to Rouge. “Thanks a lot, Rouge. Glad we can count on you.” He gets an idea before Rouge leaves. “Oh, wait! Would you be able to contact Shadow to meet us there? He could be a big help to us, whatever we’re dealing with.”
“What makes you think he’ll help you guys out here? He’s not much of a team player, you know.”
“I know, I just thought he might want a piece of the action. Plus, I bet I could totally get there faster and take out Eggman before he could have a chance!”
Rouge laughs behind her hand and smiles. “You got it, Blue. I’ll give him a call. Don’t get your hopes up, though.” She says before sauntering out of the room.
Sonic grins as he looks at the other members of his team. “Well guys, are we ready to fry this egg once more?”
“I’m ready!” Tails exclaims with a jump.
Silver clenches his fist in a heroic way. “I’ll make sure that we stop Eggman’s plot and save the future!”
Knuckles crosses his arms and taps his foot. “I need to take some of this anger out on some robots soon, or else I’m gonna go crazy.”
Sonic nods his head with resolve. “All right! I just hope we can quash this issue before it turns into something big. Let’s go, everyone!”

A Sonic Forces Songfic - Zelda’s Lullaby (not to be confused with “Zelda’s Lullaby” from LOZ: Ocarina of Time)
It was night and everyone was sleeping peacefully in their respective bunkers...except for Gadget, who was having nightmares about a certain masked jackal murdering his old friends.
“NOOO!!!” Gadget screamed as he suddenly jolted awake, scaring Zelda awake in his process.
“Gadget, what’s wrong, dear?” Zelda gasped in horror.
“I had this horrible nightmare again,” Gadget cried. “Infinite killed my friends and now he was about to kill me too, and--”
He was suddenly unable to finish his sentence as he started crying uncontrollably, only for Zelda to wrap her arms around him.
“Shhh, it’s alright,” Zelda soothed as she attempted to console Gadget. Little did they know that a certain group of heroes were woken up too and were already nearby and eavesdropping.
“Mind if I sing you something?” Zelda asked.
“Yes, but what kind of song?” Gadget sniveled, his tears still falling down his face.
“It was the song that I used to sing to my little brother every night,” Zelda admitted. “I can sing it to you too if it’s what you want.”
Gadget silently nodded and with that, Zelda cleared her throat and began to sing.
Zelda: [Verse 1]
All that I see is not the same But you’re still standing there So much has happened; it’s hard to bear Shadows of sadness within your stare But still, you’re standing there
[Pre-Chorus]
There beyond, future’s down the road But the journey won’t be easy Rising up and standing on your own With the beauty in your eyes Shining...
[Chorus]
You have not lost a thing Whatever may come The light of hope is always shining there in your heart You have not lost a thing Whatever you do Just know that your tomorrow will be waiting for you
[Interlude]
[Verse 2]
Ever so precious a vision shared The future you promised on that special day Still, memories never fade Friends of old, back from long ago Come again, just to say hello And there’s something that you know
[Pre-Chorus]
Find the strength that lies within your soul And believe that you can do it Rising up and standing on your own With the beauty in your eyes Shining...
[Chorus]
You have not lost a thing Whatever may come The light of hope is always shining there in your heart You've not lost a thing Whatever you do Just know that your tomorrow will be waiting for you
[Chorus 2]
Never have to give up Whatever may come The light of hope is always shining there in your heart Haven’t lost anything No matter what comes You know inside that here is right where you always are
[Bridge]
Sow a seed in the ground and let it know It's something special Let it bloom, let its flowers ever bloom Many friends gather as emotions grow And great power starts to flow!
[Chorus]
You have not lost a thing Whatever may come The light of hope is always shining there in your heart You've not lost a thing Whatever you do Just know that your tomorrow will be waiting for you
[Coda/Chorus 2]
Never have to give up Wherever you go Know inside that you will never be there alone Haven’t lost anything Whatever may come The light of hope is always shining there in your heart
As soon as Zelda finished her song, she noticed that Gadget had finally fallen asleep, snoring softly. After all, while Zelda was singing her song, Gadget stopped crying and smiled at the soothing music as well as her beautiful voice prior to falling asleep with a small smile plastered on his face. Zelda smiled warmly at this wonderful sight prior to proceeding to stroke his red fur tenderly.
“Sleep well, my love,” Zelda whispered sweetly as she gently kissed Gadget’s forehead prior to falling asleep herself.
Just then, a familiar pinkette sighed affectionately, having already enjoyed the song.
“Amy, what’s the matter?” Sonic wondered.
“Oh, Sonic,” Amy gushed, “this song is so beautiful! I’ve never heard a rookie sing something like this.”
“Pfft, lullabies?!” Knuckles groaned, despite being worried about Gadget deep down. “That’s for babies!”
“Knuckles, don’t be like that!” Silver whispered harshly as he firmly punched Knuckles on the elbow.
“Yeah, lullabies aren’t just for babies,” Tails agreed. “In fact, it’s for everyone.”
“That’s right,” Rouge agreed as well. “And I love that song too.”
“Who doesn’t?” Sonic admitted in agreement. “Anyway, it’s still pretty late, so let’s head back to bed, everyone.”
Everyone nodded and they all went back to their respective bunkers, going back to bed in their process and knowing that since the war was over, they had a lot to do. Plus, they also knew that Infinite would never be able to hurt anyone, let alone Gadget, ever again.

Reboot Ch1
It was mostly Tails working around the clock that saved him. Even now he wasn't fully ready to be brought up from his 'sleep' as Sonic had started to call it, he was still missing parts but he was at least stable. Missing both his legs but stable. It was nothing short of a miracle really.

Recalling the partially melted shambles that they had managed to pull out from the ice, he was shocked Metal was even remotely alive. The steam from the ice had been what saved him, at least that's what Tails' claimed. Something about it making a barrier until the ice flooded in around him and redirected the lava? Sonic didn't fully understand it but he understood that Metal was alive! He was here!

Sonic was alone in the lab currently, having sent Tails to go get an actual full nights sleep. He came here often to just...look at him. It was still surreal to have Metal be here and safe. It had been more than touch and go for awhile there.

He was so used to all the little lights and sounds that he missed a new one starting up for the longest time. At first, he thought that it was bad and had been about to run for Tails when he spotted the new light. Red lights, in Metal's face. "Wh...but you shouldn't be waking up yet buddy! You aren't ready! Uh..uh go back to sleep! Should I sing a lullaby?" He didn't want to leave Metal to wake up totally alone but he wasn't supposed to be awake yet!

This wasn't good! He really should grab Tails but he had just fallen asleep and had been barely able to stay on his feet as it was. What harm could it be anyways? He had no legs sure but they were being rebuilt! He shouldn't wake up alone at least, that would scare anyone! So Sonic waiting, watching the dim red light pulse with baited breath, barely blinking.
~~~
The room came into focus slowly, the angle disorienting until he realized that he was hanging in some sort of harness with various machines plugged into him. His first thought was that Eggman had recovered him but this did not look like Eggman's laboratory. There were no sounds of other robots moving about, doing their own work and Eggman himself was not there to berate his failure. Then where was he?
~~
"Hello? Metal..? You in there?" It had been a few minutes maybe? He wasn't sure how long but all that happened was Metal's eyes just staying that dim red. Maybe he wasn't waking up after all? Had he just been imagining it? Maybe it was normal? Sonic had no idea how these sorts of things worked!
The red lights brightened as Metal twitched, not too much as he could tell he was damaged and did not want to make it worse. Vision sharpening, he took in a form staring up at him. Short? or just lower? His perception was off still, systems needed to be re-calibrated. Blue.
His memory core took a moment to compile before providing him with information. Sonic, his target. Only...not target? Why was his mission flagged complete? Sonic stood there, right in front of him. Both missions were marked complete? When? How? His memory core was damaged, corrupt. It would take time for his systems to even try and recover so all he could do was go off what he had.
No missions and a damaged body. Tilting his head down, he spotted his legs. On the table and very much not attached. They looked damaged too, very damaged. Melted possibly. Metal found himself starting to panic. What had happened to cause such damage?
~~~
The numbers on one of the screens starting to rise coupled with the very obviously awake Metal looking at his legs made it obvious what was going on. Hoping the machines would hold his weight, Sonic jumped up to be more even with Metal's face. "Hey! Hey it's okay! Calm down, it'll be alright! Tails will fix you right up, okay? I promise. You just gotta calm down, trust me!" Sonic urged, keeping his voice low and even as he reached to carefully grasp the fingers that had twitched. "I'm right here, I promise it will be okay."
~
The touch startled him, systems stalling slightly as they scrambled to figure out the new input only for him to realize it was Sonic. Sonic was there. Talking to him? Soothing him? Why was he soothing him? Why was he grabbing his hand? What did he say? He only got every other word, audial systems able to hear but the rest was not quite ready to catch what the words meant.
He got the last bit however. A promise, that it would be okay? Sonic was...here, and it would be okay? Why was Sonic here? Why did that make it okay? Was it okay? It must be. His missions were gone and yet he was not with Eggman. Something...pulled at him. A fragmented memory. Of leaves and water and...berries? Something about...Sonic?
He did find himself calming, however unlikely such a thing should be. He was being repaired, that much was obvious. He was immobile and yet...he had no fear for his safety. He let Sonic's words of comfort follow him back to a state of offline. Perhaps if he focused on defragging his memories then he would understand better. Understand why the memory of leaves and water and berries meant that it was okay to be here.

A Short Quiz
Chapter 22: Peaceful
Amy was already standing outside when Sonic came to a stop near the front door to her apartment. If it weren’t for the fact that he checked the time just before arriving, he would have thought he somehow managed to be late.
Hey, Sonic!” she greeted with a cheerful wave.
“Hey, Amy,” Sonic greeted back.
As he took a step closer, Amy’s smile faded and expression shifted to concern.
“Are you okay?”
“Huh?” Sonic looked himself over for injuries, wondering if he scratched himself on something while running and just didn’t notice. After a brief check, he found nothing. “Do I not look okay?”
“You look like you’ve been crying…”
“Oh…”
It didn’t occur to him that his eyes would still be a bit red after crying to Tails earlier. He never really had to worry about this kind of problem before, so it slipped his mind entirely. Now he figured he owed Amy some sort of explanation, something to ease her worries a little.
“Look, I… I was talking to Tails about some deep stuff earlier… and I don’t really want to say anything else about it…”
Amy nodded.
“That’s okay. I won’t make you.”
With that resolved, Sonic breathed a sigh of relief.
“So Amy, I’m gonna have to carry you today.”
She tilted her head.
“Why?”
“I wanna surprise you, so your eyes will have to be closed.”
“Wouldn’t it be easier for you just let me run until we’re almost there, and then carry me once we’re close?”
Sonic paused for a brief moment.
“Y-Yeah. I guess that would make more sense…”
His gaze shifted down, his hand being brought up to awkwardly rub his arm. Amy couldn’t quite see his face, but from what she could see, he looked sort of… disappointed?
“Well uh, follow me like usual, then. It’s gonna take awhile to get there.”
Gradually, he began running at a reasonable pace, with Amy following close behind.
The first part of the journey was filled with relative silence. When they first starting hanging out, Sonic and Amy would always be desperate to find something to discuss to keep the silence away. But after how many times they’ve traveled together like this, they eventually learned to feel less awkward with nothing being spoken. Sure, if one of them thought of something fun to talk about, they’d share it, but they no longer feel obligated to fill the air with random conversation. Besides, these moments of silence allowed them to just enjoy the scenery around them, and each other’s company.
Another thing these quiet moments allowed was the ability to think, which Amy was making use of at the moment. Specifically, she was thinking about how Sonic reacted to her suggestion earlier. Sure, she couldn’t see his expression, but the way he acted made it look like he was disappointed.
Was he really disappointed that he couldn’t carry her the whole way? Why would that upset him? A while ago he said he didn’t mind carrying her, but he made it sound like he was neutral to it. Now, it appeared he actually wanted to carry her, a thought that made Amy’s heart race with excitement.
Quickly, she pushed her thoughts somewhere else. As much as Amy loved to think about how Sonic was showing more signs of sharing the same feelings as her, she knew the train of thought always led to the same place. It always stopped at how he probably wouldn’t be comfortable with expressing his romantic feelings right now, that is if he even has them. So, instead of following that line of thought, she tried thinking of something else. Anything else.
About two hours later, Sonic gestured Amy to stop, then picked her up to carry her for the rest of the trip. He told her to close her eyes, and not to open them until he said to. After a chuckle, she did.
Without her sight, Amy was left to interpret everything through her other senses. As always, she could feel the rushing air blowing through her quills and hear the wind against her ears. It was difficult to guess her surroundings with Sonic running so fast like this, but he deemed the distance too close to let her continue running, so she was stuck with nothing to go off of until he slowed down a little. For now, the harsh winds overloaded her senses too much to take in much of anything.
Finally, Sonic slowed down. He was still running, but it was slower than the fast sprint he was traveling at before. Now, Amy could take in more of everything.
Even though her eyes were still shut, she could still tell that wherever she was, it was a little darker than usual. Not pitch black, but something was definitely obstructing the sunlight. Warm air passed over her skin, and droplets of water condensed on her bracelets due to high humidity. The scent of damp earth and flowers permeated the area, clueing Amy into where they were. By now, she guessed they were in a forest of some kind, but she wouldn’t truly know until Sonic gave her the okay to open her eyes.
The sounds helped to add more evidence to her guess though. She could hear various wildlife calls in the area. Birds singing beautiful tones to each other high above her head, leaves rustling as Sonic rushed by, and in the distance, water crashing down and flowing away.
“Almost there,” Sonic said, slowing his pace to a jog. “Remember to keep your eyes shut until I say something, okay?”
“Okay,” Amy replied with a small chuckle.
Sonic slowed to a stop, looking around with Amy still in his arms. He quietly hummed in thought for a moment, stopping with a barely audible “perfect” once he found the best place to set Amy down.
Carefully, he lowered Amy’s feet to the ground, moving his hands away once she was firmly planted on the soft dirt path. He took a few excited steps backward, his smile shining as he spoke.
“Alright. You can look around now.”
Amy’s eyes fluttered open, revealing the jungle around her.
Everything was so alive. Vibrant flowers dotted much of the fern covered ground, a brilliant display of colors decorating the green landscape. Networks of roots twisted through the foliage before finding their way into the ground. Following them to the source led to the sight of enormous trees, some twisted and low to the ground, others straight and reaching to the sky. Many vines coiled their massive trunks all the way into the higher branches, some even making it to the canopy. Sunlight seeped through the cracks in the entwined leaves, traveling all the way down and freckling the earthy paths below.
Amy took a few steps forward, looking all around her. Soon she saw where the sounds of crashing water were coming from. Only a short distance away from the path was a waterfall that leads into a small stream. The sounds of flowing water mixed with rustling leaves and animal calls to create the perfect natural music to encapsulate the entire experience.
Without a second thought, Amy rushed to Sonic with her arms wide open and eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.
“This place is amazing!” she squealed in pure joy, wrapping him in a tight embrace.
Sonic’s body went completely still. Various instincts in his head screamed conflicting commands at him from left and right. One was screaming to push Amy away, one was screaming to slip from her grasp and run, another was screaming to hug her back. It was all just indecipherable noise, the end result causing Sonic to stay locked in his position. The entire ordeal only lasted a few seconds before Amy jumped away.
“Oh my gosh! I’m sorry! I-”
“It’s fine, Amy,” he interrupted before she could completely freak out.
With a reassuring smile, Sonic let a few seconds pass by sooth Amy’s worries. After taking a breath to further calm herself, she spoke with more control.
“Thank you for taking me here,” she said, a hint of excitement still seeping into her tone.
“No problem,” Sonic replied, his smile soft and comforting.
Amy looked around, soon exploring a small amount to enjoy the scenery. Sonic followed close behind, allowing her to take her time viewing what she wanted as he did the same.
After a short while, Amy asked if there was any place to sit down, which led to Sonic taking her away from the path. The sounds of the rushing waterfall got closer as they continued forward, the beautiful sight coming into full view within a minute. Sonic walked over to a smooth boulder that sat a few feet from the stream, brushing a small amount of debris off of it and taking a seat. He then patted the area next to him, signaling Amy to sit down. She did so happily, watching the waterfall with him for a moment as she made herself comfortable.
“This place really is amazing,” she said, looking at the brilliant plant life all around her. “I never knew jungles could be so colorful.”
“Neither did I,” Sonic said while turning to her. “When I saw this place, I immediately knew you’d like it.”
Amy quickly looked away as her cheeks became bright red, covering her muzzle with her hands at the same time.
“Uh, you alright?” Sonic asked, viewing her behavior with a bit of concern.
“Yep,” Amy forced out quickly.
“You sure?” Sonic insisted with a tilt of his head.
The hands once only hiding her muzzle moved to conceal her entire face.
“Uh, Amy?”
Carefully, Sonic extended his hand and rested it on Amy’s shoulder, trying to get her attention. She immediately got up and took a few steps away, taking a sharp breath.
“You’re making this very difficult you know.” Her tone was hard for Sonic to understand. She didn’t seem sad or angry at the very least.
“Huh?”
With a huff, Amy turned around with her arms straight to her sides. It was now very easy for Sonic to see her flushed cheeks.
“Do you seriously not understand how romantic this all is? The flowers, the jungle, how you’re acting? How am I supposed to stay composed will all that?”
Cheeks tinting to a soft pink, Sonic cleared his throat to hide his embarrassment.
“Oh, uh… I didn’t mean to uh… I…”
Amy slowly took in a deep breath, and let it out.
“I know.”
She walked back to the boulder and hopped back on, sitting next to Sonic again.
“Sorry, Amy. I just thought this place was cool and thought you’d like it too. I didn’t think everything would be all, well…”
“It’s fine, Sonic.” She let out a small chuckle. “It’s kind of funny. Even though you don’t enjoy romance, you like a ton of romantic stuff.”
Sonic crossed his arms with a furrowed brow.
“Like what?”
“Well, flowers, for one. Most people consider them romantic.”
He raised his pointer finger in protest.
“Red flowers are the romantic ones. The others aren’t usually romantic.”
“Your favorite flowers are red.”
Slowly, Sonic lowered his finger and rested his hands in his lap.
“Yeah… but, I don’t like them for romantic reasons. They just look nice and smell good.”
“You also like sunsets.”
“It’s relaxing to run during sunset.”
“And you like strolls through beautiful forests.”
“I like nature.”
“I’m just saying, those are all pretty romantic things.”
Sonic let out a huff and crossed his arms again.
“It’s not my fault everyone randomly decided sunsets and nature were romantic,” he pouted.
“I know. I just find it kind of funny. That’s all.”
They sat in silence for a moment, watching the waterfall.
“Hey uh, what did you mean when you said ‘how you’re acting’?”
“Huh?”
Amy turned to Sonic with confusion.
“Earlier you said I was acting romantically. I don’t really get what you mean.”
“Oh, well…” Amy sat up straight and looked ahead, while Sonic leaned forward to read her expression. “You’re just being so thoughtful and caring. You got really concerned over me, even though all I did was look away for a moment.” A hint of blush dusted her cheeks, but she didn’t try to hide it this time.
“I try to be nice and care about everybody…”
“I know, Sonic.”
After taking a moment to think about everything, he still couldn’t grasp what she was trying to say.
“I… still don’t understand.”
Amy sighed and turned to face Sonic.
“It’s romantic because that’s just how you are. You’re aren’t trying to impress me or anything, you just really care about everyone. It’s romantic because no matter what happens, I know you’re someone that I can always trust.”
Immediately, Amy turned away and covered her intensely blushing face in pure embarrassment. “S-Sorry. That was-”
She felt Sonic’s hand on her shoulder again, but this time, it was leading her to face him. When she did so, she saw the soft smile and calm eyes that she would always love.
“Not to sound romantic or anything, but… you’re someone I can always trust too.”
Sonic could almost hear Amy’s heart racing out of her chest as she turned away again, hiding her incredibly red face. He let out a quiet chuckle and gave her a few minutes to calm down. Once she felt a little more relaxed, Amy gradually moved her hands from her face and continued to enjoy the jungle.
Other than the tapping of Sonic’s foot on the stream’s rocky shore, everything was rather peaceful. The sounds of the flowing waterfall and stream were probably the largest factors at the moment, making for some perfect background noise. As Amy watched the water flowing down the stream, a thought came to mind.
“Um, Sonic?”
The tapping of his foot immediately stopped. “Uh… yeah?” Something about his tone indicated he already knew what she was about to say.
“So um, I know I asked you this a bunch of times, and you said no all those times, but…”
“...You still want to teach me how to swim?”
“Yeah…”
The way Sonic squirmed in his spot indicated to Amy that he still hated the idea.
“I know you’re scared, but I’m worried about what could happen if you don’t learn. It could be fun. I promise nothing bad would happen.”
With a shaky breath, Sonic turned to Amy with a look of terribly concealed fear.
“Alright. You can teach me if you really want to.”
“Really?!” she exclaimed in pure excitement.
“Y-Yeah, ‘really’. You’re gonna have to figure out a time though.”
“How about tomorrow?”
Sonic jumped, visibly shaking at the thought. “Tomorrow!?!”
“Come on! If we don’t go tomorrow, I’ll have to wait until next Saturday before I get enough time to teach you.”
He whined at the thought but knew he had to get it over with eventually. With another shaky breath, he gave in.
“Alright. F-Fine.”
“Is noon okay?”
“Sure…”
“Thank you!” Amy squealed, leaning over with arms open wide.
Quickly, she stopped herself before she could give Sonic another unexpected hug, putting her arms to her sides and clearing her throat. Appreciating the gesture, Sonic opened his arms, giving her the okay to hug him. She smiled brightly, taking the opportunity with glee. Their embrace lasted only a short moment, but Amy enjoyed every second of it.
Once the hug was over, Amy continued to sit and enjoy the scenery. Though, something felt a little off. Not uncomfortable. Actually, the opposite. Soon, she realized the slight weight on her shoulder that had been there since she and Sonic ended their embrace. Turning her head, she realized that Sonic had his arm around her the entire time afterward.
With a quick glance to his face, Amy realized that Sonic didn’t seem to notice that his arm was there, and she didn’t really want to say anything. It didn’t bother her, it was actually pretty soothing, but she hated to think that Sonic would become uncomfortable at some point because of it. After thinking it over, she figured he’d move his arm if he ever became uncomfortable, which she hoped wouldn’t happen.
Soon though, she felt him shift his arm. He didn’t move it away, but it became apparent that he noticed where his arm was too. Taking a look out of the corner of her eye, she could see that Sonic was going through some sort of internal dilemma.
The instincts in his head were screaming again. Some shouted to take his arm back, others to keep it there. Sonic tried to sort everything out but couldn’t. It felt nice having his arm around her, but it also made him horribly nervous. What if it bothered her that his arm was there? What if it bothered her if he took it away? Then the thought ran through his head of how creepy it is to have just wrapped his arm around her without saying anything. Sonic felt his gut twisting in guilt.
It was very obvious to Amy that Sonic was uncomfortable now. He was shaking in his spot with his ears back. She considered that he might not be moving his arm simply to keep her comfortable; It sounded like something he’d do.
“You can move your arm if it’s making you uncomfortable,” she stated, trying her best to calm him.
Sonic only trembled more, his breath shaking as conflicting thoughts raced through his head.
“I don’t- I mean I- I-I just…”
With a sharp movement, he took his arm back and held it close to his chest, then let out a pitiful whimper. Amy turned to him with increasing concern.
“Sonic?”
He brought his knees to his chest and wrapped his arms around his legs, feeling incredibly lonely. He internally scolded himself for feeling that way. Amy was right there! He wasn’t alone! The thought only made him feel worse.
“Sonic, what’s wrong?”
After letting out a whimper, Sonic held his composure for a few seconds to speak.
“Can I hug you?”
“O-Of course!”
He rushed in, wrapping his arms around her a letting out a shaky breath.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with me,” he finally answered, his voice hoarse. He took a deep breath.
“I like spending time with you, and I like hugging you, and you make me feel better… but I also get so nervous! I don’t know why, and I don’t know what to do, and-” Sonic caught himself wiping his eyes, noticing the tears collected on his glove. “-and I’m crying. Again. For the second time today.”
A muffled whine was heard as Sonic leaned away from the embrace, covering his face in shame.
“What happened to me?” he lamented. “I used to get over things in the past without it being such a big deal. But now I’m crying constantly when I shouldn’t be crying at all. How did turn into such a baby?”
Amy pulled Sonic back into her arms.
“You’re not a baby for crying a few times, especially after everything you’ve been through.” She felt his arms wrap around her waist. “And it’s better for you to cry than to bottle things up because you know what happens when you do that for too long.” A sniff was heard, then Amy felt Sonic nod. “I… don’t know what to say about how you’re feeling around me, but all I know is that I want you to be comfortable. If you’re nervous, do what makes you more relaxed. If you want a hug, I’ll give you one. If you want space, I’ll step away.” Amy gently nudged Sonic from the embrace to look at him directly. “I want you to feel safe, okay?”
Sonic smiled, wiping away the rest of his tears and sniffing.
“Okay.”
With that all sorted out, they both returned to watching nature peacefully like they were before.
Not too long later, Amy felt Sonic’s arm around her shoulder again, followed by it being slightly withdrawn.
“Uh, is… is this alright?”
Sonic wore a sheepish smile, his ears back and cheeks pink.
“Yes, Sonic,” Amy replied, holding back her excitement. “It’s alright.”
With a quick nod, Sonic rested his arm across her shoulders, releasing a small sigh of relief after. Once he was a little more used to the feeling, he thought he’d try and go a bit further. Slowly, he pulled Amy closer, until the side of her head was resting against his. His heart raced as he waited for Amy to say she was uncomfortable, but she never did. Instead, he heard her breathing gradually soften into a calming rhythm, and felt her body sink into his a little more.
“Amy?” he whispered, getting no response.
He chuckled softly, letting his head relax against hers.
Everything felt peaceful. Even though the jungle was already warm and humid, the warmth he felt from Amy was happily welcomed. Her soft breathing and the ambient sounds all around helped to sooth Sonic’s nerves greatly. Sure he was technically stuck in place at the moment, not wanting to wake Amy from her adorable nap, but he didn’t mind. If anything, the thought of spending more time with her like this was something he felt more than okay with.
