Hi, hopefully this makes sense but that latest chapter made me think of the song ‘Mother, I’m Here (Zulf’s Theme) from the videogame Bastion. In-game, it is a funeral song with the mother in the song being a reference to the goddess of loss and longing, Micia. In CTB context, it could pull double duty as a reference to Hylia and Marigold

This is such a sweet little song! I can definitely see why you would recommend it.

I agree that this song could play on Warriors's complicated relationship with his mom and his goddesses. I also like how the first verse:

The worst of the Calamity was the Calamity, but it was the silence, too. How much he said that no one knew--Rucks knew he was a talker, any Mason could tell. All the Masons on the Wall laughed at how chatty he was. There were a lot of thoughts in his head, thoughts that needed to be shared. Thoughts the only the Wall understood, when he put his bare hand on cold stone and thought, spoke, Let me tell you about my day…

The Wall talked, too. Oh, you wouldn’t believe everything that happened. All those boy who think they’re men, strutting around like they’re big stuff. They’d both laugh about that, as if the Kid wasn’t the same. Sometimes she sang songs to him, taught him Mason drinking cheers from the day she was born. Not as old as those rolling green hills outside of her, but old enough to know a thing or two. He broke curfew most nights, stayed up to whispering dawn, even if it meant cleaning the latrines for a week. Now look at you, up so late. Here’s a lullaby, take this and go to bed. You have to be up early tomorrow. The next day he hummed it all day long, and the other Masons said If you like her so much, you should just marry her, but only because they were jealous.

And when he went to the Wilds, farther out than any Mason in his year, she spoke, too. Equal parts curiosity and hostility--an intruder, causing a ruckus, but it’d been a while since there’d been a Mason in her lands. What do you think you’re doing here? There’s nothing here for you. Go home! But he stayed, no matter what she thew at him. A flock of Peckers wasn’t going to stop him. He had to protect the Wall, after all; she was a friend like no other. The Wilds relented, eventually, some; she could not control every little thing moving around her, everything with teeth and tongue and spike. But at night there was quiet, a hush bloomed over the roaring earth. She taught him things that no man knew, things that no history book could tell. She taught him the songs of peoples who roamed before him, the calls of creatures that had disappeared. Hinted at the words of the Gods, but he didn’t need to know that, now did he. In return, with his hand sunk into the soft ground below him, he shared every dream that he had ever had of his mama and spoke of every other child who called him weird and ugly and all things about people that she would never know. Even with all the danger that prowled around him, every claw that threatened to rend, he was sad when he had to leave his friend the Wilds, but always happy to be back with his friend the Wall.

And then the Calamity happened.

The Wall shook unsteady beneath his feet and dropped off like squares of rains. He put his hand to her and said, Sing, please. Speak, please.

Anything, please.

But she did not. So he ran, and everything she protected curdled into violence. With every step, he spoke, Please, please, please, but she gave nothing. As he went, he sang every lullaby, drinking song, festival cheer, anything, to try and coax the words he once loved from her throat. But nothing, nothing, nothing. All that was left was a wall as broken as his heart.

He came to the Bastion. He met a man. He said, Does she sing?, gestured to the green around them, and the man said, Don’t know what you’re talking about, even though he did. The Kid tried speaking with her, but she was stubborn. New. She did not absorb the Mason work songs that struck through the air with every hammer, she did not swallow secret words from slinking Mancers who slipped around her. The Kid did not stop, though. Every night, he sat by the Core, and listened to its gentle hum, the magic vibrations that almost smelled of home. He did not speak; it was her turn. He was not always a good listener, but for her, he would try. She had to be ready for it. Zia and Zulf, they’d ask what he was doing. What did he see that they did not? Hear what they did not? But the Kid would only say, It’s a Mason thing, and would spill no more. They left him alone, eventually, and so did Rucks, but would Rucks watch him sit by that Core every night like a man who had torn ties from everything he once loved. But that was a tale he’d never tell.

They sailed, eventually. The future was coming, something bright and new, something swelling with a hopeful pride. Beneath his feet, the Bastion glowed and glimmered. The Kid sat, put his hand to the verdant ground, and said, Here, let me sing you a song I used to know…

Played a lot of bastion today. I think I'm decently far through the story, zulf has already come and gone... Not the least because I'm not doing much of the side stuff lol. I don't enjoy the combat quite as much as in Hades or transistor, I also feel like the game (accidentally) encourages you to focus on one particular set of weapons because of the upgrade requirements. Like why would I switch out for an army carbine when I can just keep upgrading my fang repeater to be unstoppable? I've literally just been using that and the hammer, except for when the game forces me to change...

Which happens so frequently and is becoming incredibly annoying. I'm starting to dread finding a cool new weapon while I'm out on the field because it will replace a weapon I worked hard to upgrade, and the levels are getting harder so I can't afford to be saddled with a weapon I don't know how to use. That is one of my least favorite things about the game. My other least favorite thing is the sheer amount of evil stationary plants with various bullet hell attacks. Seriously why is the flora in this game so shitty!!

I like the art style, the soundtrack, and the storytelling though, as usual re: supergiant. My favorite bit so far is when you encounter zia for the first time and you just hear this distant singing, and rucks breaks the narration to be like "how did that song go again?" he pauses, we hear an unobstructed measure, and he goes "that's right." I know some spoilers so I know that the game is hinting that rucks's "narration" is actually him telling the story to zia retroactively, so he's literally asking for her musical input there. I liked that subtle touch

I can see why bastion was/is an indie darling, and why people like it more than transistor... I don't lol, I LOVE the combat in transistor and the emotional arc between the two protagonists was deeply compelling to me, and I'm not quite as compelled by bastion. I do think the central premise is very interesting though, in that you wake up directly after the end of the world and have to figure out how to carry on. On paper it seems like bastion would be just as depressing as transistor, but it certainly isn't. Brighter colors and more cheerful music, sure, but also... How do I put this. Bastion is about saving people. Transistor is about trying to save one specific person, and then discovering you can't. Both protagonists are stoic determinators, but bastion's narrative is hopeful where transistor's is vengeful. Bastion is trying to move on from tragedy, and transistor could only ever be a tragedy.

Whether bastion succeeds at what it sets out to do, I'll wait and see. I'm not as invested in the story as that of transistor's (or even hades', despite my laundry list of problems with rewriting the Persephone myth), but it's by no means bad, it's supergiant

I don't think I'm invested enough to try all the side challenges though lol, let alone immediately start new game+ like I did with transistor. I have too many games I want to get to to linger on one that I'm kind of lukewarm on

Ah, to be an emo teen again. But seriously, every single song is amazing and the stories they tell are so vivid. A lot of whether or not I like a song depends on how easily I can stage a AMV with my OCs to it in my head and MCR is perfect for both angst and badass action scenes.

3) Are You Alright? // Love Joy

Technically not an album but an EP, don’t care, the way to my heart is through horns and badass instrumentals. (Also hello again, Wilbur)

4) American Beauty American Psycho // Fall Out Boy

Weird choice maybe, but I recently got my first l set of headphones that cost more than $10 and listened to this album in one sitting. It made me appreciate just how good this album is.

Although Khushi’s wearing her usual clothes, purple and magenta are just her color and her simplistic makeup, with the perfectly timed wind (which it almost always is) and the gentle blush makes this moment stand out. She’s GORGEOUS. Even more than the day she got married. 

You’d think that shy, soft, glow would disappear after months of being married to the brick wall. To the contrary, he flirts for one second and you realize that perhaps their marriage has a rare longevity as she blushes like a sweet schoolgirl (he would definitely be the older broody teen I’d tell my daughter to stay away from *sigh*)

Birthday Greetings to Indrani Mukherjee, a heroine full of grace!

Yesteryear actors had a grace and style that is rare to find in films today. Indrani Mukherjee, a lead heroine of the 1960s and 1970s, exemplifies this. From her debut in Usne Kaha Tha to acting in hits such as Aakhri Khat, Indrani Mukherjee was known for her intense performances in the 1960s and 1970s.

Born and brought up in Allahabad, Indrani Mukherjee entered the industry at the age of 15. Indrani made her first appearance in films with the Moni Bhattacharjee-directed and Bimal Roy-produced Usne Kaha Tha (1960). Indrani went onto star in Yash Chopra’s Dharmputra (1961) opposite Shashi Kapoor. She was the first heroine of Rajesh Khanna, who debuted in the Chetan Anand-directed Aakhri Khat (1966), India’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards, in which Indrani played the role of a young woman.

She acted in Shaadi (1962), Grahasti (1963), Haqeeqat (1964), Shaheed (1965), Bharat Milap (1965), Mere Lal (1966), Naunihal (1967) , Aan Milo Sajna (1970), Heer Raanjha (1970), Parvarish (1977), Zameer (1975), Dharam Veer (1977), Des Pardes (1978), Mr. Natwarlal (1979), Naseeb (1981), among others.

Famous songs picturised on her were “Tumhari Zulf Ke Saaye Mein” (Naunihal), “Bhool Sakta Hai Bhala Kaun Yeh Pyaari Aankhen Rang” (Dharmputra). But among the most well-known is arguably “Baharon mera jeevan bhi sawaro” of Aakhri Khat with the music composition by Khayyam and lyrics by Kaifi Azmi that is evergreen.

She also acted in a few Marathi and Bhojpuri films, including Apradh (1979) in Marathi, where she delivered a stellar performance and Laagi Nahi Chhute Ram (1963) in Bhojpuri.

Indrani Mukherjee retired from the industry in the mid-1980s to take care of her children.
