Rekha Scrapped an Interview After It Was Done, I Was Speechless,â Says Rajeev Masand: âShe Said I Donât Want ToâŚâ
Veteran actress Rekha, celebrated for her powerful performances and timeless style, is known to rarely give interviews. Former journalist Rajeev Masand recently shared an intriguing experience with the legendary actress, revealing how she once scrapped an interview after it was completed.
In an interview with the YouTube channel Shaardulogy, Rajeev Masand recounted, âWe did an interview with Rekha ji a couple of years ago. The whole interview was done and then she is like, âI donât want to do this, can we scrap it?â I was speechless. First of all, she rarely gives interviews. She did a few with me. One we did many years ago and one a couple of years ago. The interview is just lying there; she said we will do it again. These are the people who are in the pursuit of perfection and excellence.â
Defending Rekha's decision, Masand added, âIn Rekha Jiâs case, she is someone who comes out rarely. If you are not liking the way you are looking or sounding, I understand you want to be in control. They are all in the pursuit of perfection.â
Recently, Rekha was spotted at the wedding reception of Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal, where an emotional moment was captured. In a video shared by Sonakshi, the bride can be heard comforting Rekha, saying, âRona mat,â as the actress met her and welled up.
On the professional front, Rekha was last seen in a cameo role in the film "Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se." Her last significant feature film appearance was a decade ago in "Super Nani," where she played the role of Bharti Bhatia.

Heeramandi - The Diamond Bazaar
When I first started this review, I had just finished the show. At that time, not as many reviews had been published, and there was still a lot of hype. Now that I've had some space to really think and sort through my initial reaction, I've added to and rewritten parts of this. The following is a relatively low spoiler review of my overall impression of the show:
Heeramandi is an ensemble show, with multiple actors of different backgrounds. There are industry veterans, fresh faced newcomers, and a number of people in between.
Seeing Manisha Koirala, Farida Jalal, Fardeen Khan, and Taha Shah Badussha (yes, I enjoyed Luv Ka The End when it came out, what can I say) on screen after years certainly made me nostalgic. But more than nostalgia, each of these actor's performances were convincing and each of them were able to hold their own. No surprise for someone like Farida Jalal or Manisha Koirala, but as an audience member, I have not really had the opportunity to see either Fardeen Khan or Taha Shah Badussha's range before.
And of course, theirs were not the only performances I enjoyed. Essentially the entire main cast - Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Sheikhh, Richa Chadha, Shruti Sharma, Jayati Bhatia, and Nivedita Bhargava all played the women of Heeramandi (both tawaif and maid) beautifully.
There were of course, a few performances that stood out, for better or for worse. A lot has been said about Sharmin Segal's performance at this point, and I don't have an interest in piling on. I personally did not enjoy it, and felt that she was miscast in the role. However, I do believe much of the responsibility of her performance falls squarely on the shoulders of her uncle/the director - Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Ultimately, a director has a huge say (and a director like Bhansali generally has final say) over what the project ends up looking like. Bhansali chose to cast Sharmin Segal, he was satisfied with her performance, and chose the scenes and cuts to keep for the show. In interviews, he has very clearly said he was happy with her performance.
If he had not been, he could have directed her differently, or chosen to edit out certain scenes and focus on other plotlines. He did not. This is the final product he wanted to share with the audiences, and so, if there is something lacking in Sharmin Segal or any other actor's performance, that responsibility rests on Bhansali as well.
Image: The Envoy Web
Performances that stood out to me (in a good way) were those of Sanjeeda Sheikh as Waheeda and Indresh Malik as Ustasd Ji. I was not familiar with either's work before the show, and was blown away by just how well they managed to steal every scene they were in. Without giving away any major spoilers, there is a scene between Indresh Malik and Sonakshi Sinha (as Fareedan), where Fareedan pays Ustad Ji with a gold naath. Instead of placing it in his hand though, she hooks it to his nose and turns him to face the mirror. The emotions that cross his face - wonder, happiness, loss, grief, and overwhelm of finally seeing what could have been are so beautifully projected by Indresh Malik in this brief moment. Even in a show dripping in grandeur, this tender scene steals the show.
My issues with Heeramandi are primarily rooted in the story and its pacing. The first six episodes tell a completely different story from the last two. Some plotlines drag on for too long, while others are discarded with barely any resolution. Suddenly, towards the end of episode 6, the tone completely shifts and a new plotline takes center stage for the remainder of the show. Everything else is lost to history (or perhaps a season 2). It is unfortunate, especially with an ensemble cast, because most characters seem wasted on a plot that doesn't know where it wants to go until the end.
Image: Harper's Bazaar
Vague Spoilers for the rest of the review:
A friend of mine mentioned that she believes Sanjay Leela Bhansali likes to see women suffer, and I have to agree. Bhansali may claim that his heroines are strong, but the only way we as an audience are allowed to see that is through their suffering.
They suffer against their status, their fate, the British, the men who claim to love them but torture them instead, and it is only in those moments that the audience is allowed to see them as strong and sympathetic characters.
Even our two "antagonists," Malikajaan and Fareedan, who are portrayed as relentless and calculating, are so because of their past suffering. In order to be shown as worthy of empathy and to emphasize their strength later in the show, they are forced to suffer again.
It is as if Sanjay Leela Bhansali cannot conceive of a world where a women's strength can come from her desires, her talent, her cunning, her community, and own self. Herein likes the greatest letdown of Heeramandi - it forgets the story it promised to tell.
For the majority of Heeramandi, the main charters are shown as little more than catty, selfish, manipulative women, who fight over wealth and status (often unsuccessfully). It isn't until the penultimate episode that the show goes back to what it promised before the initial opening scene. Heeramandi was sold to its audience as a story of the Tawaifs and their connection to the downfall of the British raj. Even in interviews and promotions of the show before its release, we were told this. Yet it almost never shows these women (with the exception of Bibojaan) as competent enough to do anything successfully until episode 7. Attempts to undermine each other often backfire spectacularly. Even then, these women are "strong" and resilient in the last two episodes directly after a terrible ordeal (ie more suffering) galvanizes them and completely ignores any set up of the previous 6 episodes regarding their interpersonal dynamics.
Final Thoughts:
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's signature is extravagant sets and costuming that sometimes take years to create. Having incredible Art and Costume departments to do this work has become a part of his directorial style. In this sense, he fully rises to the occasion. Audience expectation is certainly met and surpassed. Heeramandi is a visual treat. Every frame on screen is filled with intricate details.
While Bhansali exceeds audience expectation in this aspect, he fails to deliver on the story he promised to tell. By the end, everything is so convoluted it's hard to hold onto the threads of the multiple storylines, and major plot points are ignored in favour of a dramatic ending. Even with the (mostly) incredible performances from its cast, Heeramandi is little more than an opulent train wreck.
TLDR: the stories of tawaifs and their connection to the overthrowing of the British raj are important for us to learn, but Sanjay Leela Bhansali was not the right person to tell them.

Kumar Vishwas has started batting dangerously on the pitch of Hindutva, what is his intention? Opinion
Kumar Vishwas has generally followed the soft Hindutva line. There have been talks of him joining the BJP but he never speaks against Nehru or Indira Gandhi. He also considers Rahul Gandhi a good person. He has also taken a dig at the BJP and RSS when he had the opportunity. But now he has adopted the hardline Hindutva line.
Poet, story teller, motivational speaker, former politician Kumar Vishwas is in the news these days. Recently, he came under the target of so-called secular parties by taking a dig at Bollywood artist Sonakshi Sinha's marriage without naming her. It has not even been 2 weeks since this incident that he attacked Saif Ali Khan and his son Taimur without naming them. Obviously, his video clips are going viral on social media. One section is opposing him while millions of people are supporting him with loud applause. The thing to see is that one thing common in both of his statements is that both of them support the concept of radical Hindutva. Although a story teller talks about Hindu religion, Vishwas's Hindutva seems to go much further than that. The biggest thing is that the public is liking him. ...So what should be understood from this?
Till now all parties were equal for him He is not only commenting on Sonakshi and Saif Ali, for the last few days, his speech is showing the style of a hard core leader of BJP. This tone of Vishwas is being considered special and surprising because till now he used to walk a middle path. There was a balance in his statements, speeches and interviews. Which made it seem that he wanted to keep his doors open for both Congress and BJP. Rahul Gandhi was praised in his statements and he was never seen speaking against Nehru and Indira Gandhi. Along with this, many times he also criticized BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He once also took a dig at Baba Ramdev, the video of which is suddenly going viral. In this video, while reciting a poem, Kumar Vishwas is saying that I bought his salt during Navratri, I think he sells his product in such a way that if you do not buy it, then you resign from Sanatan Dharma on the same day. Vishwas says that it was written on that product that it was 25 lakh years old salt extracted from the Himalayas, and the expiry date written below it was 7th February. During this, he is also seen taking a dig at Acharya Balkrishna. This is the reason why the sudden change in the form of Kumar Vishwas is surprising people.
The path of radical Hindutva is coming at a time when it seems that BJP itself is changing. The way RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and Narendra Modi have shown their path against radicalism in the last few days, it seems that we have delayed the decision again. Because on one hand, the RSS chief is saying that the temple mosque dispute should now stop in the country. On the other hand, PM Modi is sending chaadar for Ajmer Dargah. He celebrates Christmas by going to the church. It is clear that whether it is RSS or BJP, both are going through a phase of change at this time. But in Uttar Pradesh, BJP is in a different colour. The kind of speech CM Yogi Adityanath gave in the UP assembly after the Sambhal violence, it was clear from that that the issue of Hindutva will remain hot in Uttar Pradesh.
From the things Kumar Vishwas said in the presence of CM Yogi Adityanath and Rajnath Singh at the program held on Atal Jayanti in Lucknow, it was clear that he has no regrets for the jibe he made on Sonakshi Sinha's marriage. He then said that I advise everyone to read Ramayana and Mahabharata. If you read Hindu scriptures, you will not make such mistakes. Then I say that give complete information about the family members of Ram and Sita to your family members. Then he also takes another jibe at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal without naming him. Vishwas says that I had read Mahabharata and Ramayana, so I understood that if my friend has become Duryodhan, then it is better to leave the chariot, otherwise he will be killed like Karna. Today he would have been giving account of the liquor scam. 3- Has Vishwas received Yogi's blessings? In this Lucknow program, Vishwas had also predicted Yogi's becoming the Prime Minister. He said that these days I am listening to the statements of my leftist brothers. They are praising Atal ji. When Atal ji was in power, he was called a fanatic. Then Advani ji came and the same people started praising Atal ji. After this, when Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, both Atal and Advani became great. Then he turned towards CM Yogi and said that Chief Minister ji, the day is not far when people will call PM Modi good.
Kumar Vishwas did not stop here. He praised Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He described Yogi as the most optimistic source of energy in India. Actually, what Kumar Vishwas meant to say was that the day is not far when Yogi Adityanath will come to the Centre, and then people will say what a good person Narendra Modi was. After this statement of his, the people present on the stage started smiling and there was applause too. Meanwhile, Kumar also said that when the BJP state president came to me, it felt as if he was giving a slip for a seat. There was a lot of applause for this.
There are only benefits for the believers in the path of Hinduism Actually, there are only benefits for Kumar Vishwas from batting aggressively on the Hindu pitch. Till now, Ram Katha has been done in the traditional style. All the old narrators like Morari Bapu etc. are getting old. Meanwhile, the demand for Kumar Vishwas as a narrator has increased in the whole country. His eloquence and being a stage poet brings life to his storytelling. People listen to his story with full attention for hours. People like his jokes in between. The tadka of hardline Hindutva in it makes people feel proud of their religion. It is obvious that what else does a narrator need. He has already burnt his hands in politics once. Secondly, he himself says that speaking the truth and not bowing down before anyone makes his political success doubtful. Despite this, who does not have the greed for power? It is obvious that the path of hardline Hindutva is going to pave the way for political success.

Sonakshi Sinha Stands Up for Father, Criticizes Mukesh Khannaâs Statements
Actor Sonakshi Sinha has responded strongly to veteran actor Mukesh Khanna for his recent comments blaming her father, Shatrughan Sinha, for her lack of knowledge about the Ramayana. The controversy stems from a 2019 episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) 11, where Sonakshi was unable to correctly answer a question about the Ramayana. The question pertained to whom Hanuman brought the Sanjeevani booti, a detail Sonakshi admitted she didnât recall at the time. This is the latest entertainment news India from the industry.
In a recent interview, Mukesh Khanna criticized Shatrughan Sinha, suggesting it was his responsibility to teach Sonakshi about the epic. His remarks have reignited the debate, prompting Sonakshi to issue a detailed statement on Instagram.
Sonakshi Asks Mukesh to Let Go of the Incident
Taking to her Instagram Stories, Sonakshi expressed her frustration with Mukesh repeatedly bringing up the KBC incident. She wrote, "Dear Sir, Mukesh Khanna ji, I recently read a statement you made saying that itâs my fatherâs fault I didnât answer a question about the Ramayana correctly on a show I attended many, many years back."
Sonakshi pointed out that she wasnât the only one who couldnât answer the question, but Mukesh chose to single her out. âThere were two women on the hot seat that day who did not know the answer to the same question, but you choose to keep taking my name, and only my name, for reasons which are quite obvious," she added.
Sonakshi Reflects on Forgiveness
Addressing why she was unable to answer the question, Sonakshi explained that it was a momentary lapse. âYes, I may have blanked out that day, a human tendency, and forgotten who the Sanjeevani booti was brought for, but clearly, you have also forgotten some of the lessons of forgive and forget taught by Lord Ram himself,â she wrote.
Sonakshi emphasized the importance of moving on from the incident, saying, "If Lord Ram can forgive Manthara, Kaikeyi, and even Ravan, surely you can let go of this extremely small thing in comparison."
Sonakshi Responds to âDistastefulâ Remarks About Her Father
Sonakshi concluded her statement with a warning for Mukesh Khanna. She expressed pride in the values her father instilled in her and criticized Mukeshâs remarks as âdistasteful.â âThe next time you decide to say anything about the values my father has instilled in me... please remember it's because of those values that I have only said what I said, very respectfully,â she wrote.
Mukesh Khannaâs Controversial Comment
In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Mukesh Khanna indirectly referenced Sonakshi while discussing how modern generations lack knowledge about traditional values. He said, âItâs not Sonakshiâs fault; itâs her fatherâs fault. Why did you not tell your kids? Why did you let them be so modern?â
Mukesh also hinted that todayâs generation needs guidance from characters like Shaktimaan to connect with cultural values.
A Plea for Closure
Sonakshiâs statement serves as a reminder of the importance of letting go of past incidents and respecting individuals and their families. As the debate continues, her dignified yet firm response has resonated with fans, many of whom have praised her for handling the situation with grace.

Not Just Naga Chaitanya: A Look at Celebrities Who Disabled Comments to Combat Social Media Trolling
In recent events, Naga Chaitanya and Sobhita Dhulipala surprised fans with an engagement announcement, sharing a selfie on Instagram. However, Chaitanya opted to disable comments on the post to steer clear of potential trolling. This incident reflects a growing trend among celebrities using Instagram's feature to disable comments on specific posts in response to negative feedback.
Several Indian film personalities have taken similar measures over the years, highlighting the impact of social media criticism on their mental well-being. Hereâs a closer look at some other celebrities who have chosen to turn off comments after facing backlash online.
Arshad Warsi Actor Arshad Warsi faced backlash after calling Prabhas' character in Kalki 2898 AD a "joker" during an interview. Following the criticism from fans of Prabhas, Warsi disabled comments on his Instagram for a period before eventually re-enabling them.
Sharmin Segal Sanjay Leela Bhansali's niece, Sharmin Segal, temporarily turned off her comments on Instagram after receiving negative feedback about her role in the Netflix series Heeramandi, where she played Mallikajaan, the daughter of Manisha Koirala's character.
Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal After tying the knot on June 23, 2024, Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal disabled comments on their wedding pictures due to mixed reactions, including criticism over their interfaith marriage. The couple opted to limit comments for a time to avoid trolling.
Abhishek Bachchan During the Paris Olympics 2024, Abhishek Bachchan shared a reel of memories from the event, but with rumors of his alleged divorce from Aishwarya Rai swirling online, he decided to turn off comments to prevent negativity from trolls.
Soni Razdan In 2020, Soni Razdan disabled comments on her Instagram after facing a barrage of abusive remarks related to her comments on the nepotism debate. She later expressed her disappointment over the online harassment, stating, âI had to turn that off as I was getting the filthiest abusive muck on it for absolutely no good reason.â
Sonam Kapoor Sonam Kapoor also took action in 2020 by disabling her comments section amidst growing criticism of star kids in the nepotism debate. She addressed the situation on her Instagram stories, explaining her decision was aimed at protecting her family's mental health, stating, âI donât want my 64-year-old parents to go through this. They did nothing wrong to deserve this.â
This trend of disabling comments highlights a growing awareness among celebrities about the mental toll that social media trolling can take. As public figures navigate the challenges of online scrutiny, many are prioritizing their well-being by controlling their interactions on social media platforms.

Zaheer Iqbal's Eloping Plan with Sonakshi Sinha: A Wedding Tale
In a recent interview with Galatta India, actor couple Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal shared the story of their wedding, which took place last month. The couple described their union as âone big party,â attended by close friends and family. However, Zaheer originally had a different plan for their big day.
A Different Vision
Sonakshi always envisioned a wedding in front of her family, but Zaheer had a more adventurous idea. âI wanted to elope!â Zaheer revealed. He explained that his plan was to leave the country, get married abroad, and return home. Unfortunately, this plan hit a major roadblock. âI got to know that the wedding wouldnât have been valid in India! You canât go to Vegas and get married, thatâs not allowed,â Zaheer shared.
Navigating Legalities
When asked how other couples manage foreign weddings, Sonakshi clarified, âThey must be coming back and doing some formalities here also.â The legal hiccup led to the immediate cancellation of Zaheerâs plan. âThat was always my plan!â Sonakshi emphasized, highlighting her preference for an intimate ceremony with close family and friends.
The Intimate Wedding
The coupleâs registered marriage took place at Sonakshiâs Bandra apartment on June 23, surrounded by their nearest and dearest. This was followed by a star-studded celebration at Mumbaiâs Bastian. Sonakshi reflected on the day, saying, âI always wanted a very intimate wedding. He is ok as long as our most important people were there, which is our friends and family, who were present at the signing. We opened it out to all the people we know, who have been a part of our lives. Thatâs how we always wanted to be. Zaheero and Sona ki shaadi hai, party toh banti hai. Thatâs exactly what it was, one big party.â
A Cinematic Love Story
Zaheer made his film debut with the Salman Khan-backed drama Notebook. It was at a party hosted by Salman Khan, who also launched Sonakshiâs career with Dabangg, where Zaheer and Sonakshi first met. The couple later worked together in the 2022 comedy-drama Double XL, alongside Sonakshiâs friend Huma Qureshi.
Their journey from meeting at a Bollywood party to planning a wedding that combined their desires for adventure and family presence is a testament to their unique love story.

Sonakshi Sinha thoughts on her one-take shot in Heeramandiâs âTilasmi Baheinâ song:
While the drama revolves around the life of tawaifs (courtesans) living in the red-light district of HeeraMandi in Lahore in pre-independence India, Sonakshi Sinha plays Fareedan, whom she describes as a âslightly negative and villainous characterâ in an interview with Hindustan Times.
Among the several promotional materials released in the run-up to the showâs premiere was the music video âTilasmi Baheinâ, which drew attention because it was shot in a single take and featured Sonakshi nailing her routines in front of tens of background actors. âI was not prepared at all,â Sonakshi said of filming the song. âHe (Bhansali) changes the whole choreography on set!â
âI had rehearsed for something completely different, and we had kept four days aside to shoot that particular song. We went for the shoot on the first day and we shot for a few hours, and I did the choreography, which was planned. Suddenly he got up and was like, âI donât want to do this! I want to shoot the whole song in one take and let us design it right now!â Thatâs when it happened so I had no time to prepare. I had to learn the lyrics right thereâŚ
âI donât know what hit me because I had not done a one-shot song in my entire career and there I was, doing a one-shot song for Sanjay Leela Bhansali. I was feeling the pressure, I wonât lie. But I love performing and when the camera comes on, I become the character. We did four takes but the take that you see is the first take that we did,â she mentioned.
"I donât know how it happened, that day was just magical. I still canât believe it and once that first take was over, the entire set broke into a standing ovation, including Sanjay sir. I donât think I have seen him so happy and ecstatic ever,â the actor added.
HeeraMandi: The Diamond Bazaar is scheduled to release on 1st May 2024. Are y'all looking forward to it?

Drawing Inspiration from Meena Kumari: Sharmin Segalâs Journey in Heeramandi
Actor Sharmin Segal, who has been in the spotlight since the release of Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, has shared insights into the preparation and challenges she faced for her performance in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali web series. In a recent interview, Sharmin revealed that she drew inspiration from Meena Kumariâs iconic role in Pakeezah (1972) to bring depth to her portrayal of the tragic character Alamzeb.
Emulating a Legend
Sharmin Segal delved into the classic film Pakeezah, attempting to capture the essence of Meena Kumariâs ânothingnessâ in her performance. She confessed that it took her 15-16 attempts to fully watch the film because it was so different from anything she had seen before. âMeena Kumari was one of my inspirations,â she shared, emphasizing the profound impact of Kumariâs portrayal on her own acting.
Preparation and Execution
Speaking to ETimes, Sharmin discussed her rigorous preparation for Heeramandi, which included training in dance and diction. She credited director Sanjay Leela Bhansali for his ability to elevate the material with his unique touch. Despite the challenges, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to bring Alamzeb to life.
Facing Criticism and Finding Gratitude
Sharmin has faced significant criticism and trolling for her âexpressionlessâ acting in the series. However, she remains undeterred, focusing on the multifaceted nature of human emotions that she aimed to convey through her character. âPeople will say what they have to say. They have the right to do that. Being a creative person, you are putting yourself out there for people to perceive you,â she remarked. Sharmin also acknowledged the immense appreciation she has received, which has validated her efforts and brought her joy.
Appreciation from Audiences
Reflecting on the positive feedback, Sharmin noted the difference between receiving praise from loved ones and being recognized by audiences worldwide. âItâs one thing for parents to say, âgood job beta,â but itâs another thing altogether to receive praise from audiences across the globe,â she said, expressing her gratitude for the love and support for both her character and the show.
Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar
Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, which premiered on Netflix on May 1, also stars Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Richa Chadha, and Fardeen Khan. The series continues to captivate audiences with its rich storytelling and stellar performances, marking another significant project in Sanjay Leela Bhansaliâs illustrious career.
