Edit: I dont know if I was supposed to get the artbook this early (as release date was supposed to be Nov 8th), but it answers a LOT of lore questions about the game series.

I'm very excited for Veilguard tbh. I'm eager to see how much involvement the Inquisitor will have in the story. I'm also eager to see how the dynamic of Rook/Solas and Inquisitor/Solas will play out because Adaar and Rook are going to be very different people. My Inquisitor, Herah Adaar, is a vashoth qunari mage who dislikes the Qun and wants to redeem her friend, Solas. My Rook will be Grey Warden Tal-Vashoth qunari who is still somewhat sympathetic to the Qun and though she had much to learn/unlearn, her upbringing still has some influence on the way she perceives things. She is still a bit weary of magic and immediately distrustful of Solas.

if u thinmk about it, solas would be so fucking lonely, the kind of loneliness that would kill a man, is it really any wonder why this 8000 year old ancient ass mf who is basically responsible for the degradation and loss of immortality (and pride/ dignity) of the elves falls hard - head as fuck over heels - for lavellan? he's finally seen by someone and not rejected by her, and a dalish no less, one of those misinformed idiots who live in the woods and scrounge around for survival whose entire mythology is based on venerating the very people he fought, and demonizing the very person (HIMSELF) who liberated them.

if not romanced, is it any wonder why he seeks desperately for some sign that you are worthy of respect, a whole person capable of connecting with and understanding the truth, and upon finding that wisdom in you, loves you sooo deeply as a friend? imagine waking up one day, and not only are u bald, but ur the last of ur kind, AND the descendants of the people you literally saved from slavery are talking MAAAAAAAAAAAD SHITTTTTT about you. i'd be so mad

im trying SO HARD to gaslight myself into liking veilguard but so many narrative choices just make me scratch my head. I AM NOT DONE, I currently gotta go to Weisshaupt.

I'll start with things I like so far:

1. I think the game is really pretty and I like the puzzles :) Antiva is GORGEOUS, I think one of the prettiest areas in the entire series.

2. I really like the Minrathous/Treviso choice. More of that please! some actual drama and consequence!

3. Assan is adorable and I cannot walk past without petting him. I didn't anticipate myself liking Davrin so much since I'm usually drawn to magic babies over warriors, but he's probably my favourite alongside Bellara. I think him having left his clan is very interesting narrative choice (I am totally not biased considering it's very similar to Daee's story)

4. Thank you lord almighty for the wardrobe/mirror system. Godbless.

5. Everytime Lucanis speaks I think of Puss in Boots and that brings me great joy. Whimsy even.

6. When you place Tevinter decor in the lighthouse, they have a Hookah right beside a fresco of Solas killing Mythal and that is mind bogglingly hilarious. I do love that the Shadow dragons know how to unwind. We're turning up after fighting for elf rights.

7. Solas surviving entirely on meat, raisins and honey feels very r/malelivingspace

Things I am Not Liking So Far

1.Minrathous feels utterly toothless. Its described as terrible, den of slavery, conversion therapy through blood magic, treatment of elves being terrible - yet we walk around unimpeded. I expected a similar experience as the Winter Palace, or fights that could be avoided if playing as a human.

LAVELLAN is introduced in the TEVINTER TAVERN, wearing TEVINTER CLOTHING, like it doesn't...make much sense to me? Inquisition set up the cross roads with Morrigan AND the Inquisitior, it feels like it would have made much more sense narratively not just from..."I am the fucking Inquisitor In Fucking Minrathous" but "Solas and the crossroads are a vital connecting point of these characters story."

Speaking of Inquisitor, wildly bizarre to me that neither Solas nor Varric comment on you meeting them. Solas has a weird painting of the Inquisitor chair, but you meet the mf face to face and he just does't acknowledge it. I am not a Solavellan player but I felt Really Bad For Them In That Moment.

I think a good moment of comparison is the difference in tone of DAI and DATV...When we find out the orb is elven in DAI, Solas warns us to keep it to ourselves, with Lavellan even remaking that the world will blame us for Corypheus. In DATV, we inform everyone that Elven gods are attacking, and there's no thought or conversation about the impacts of that on Elves in society. The only one to mention it is Davrin way after we've been spilling the beans left and right.

2. I'm not done the story but hey has anyone mentioned we haven't fought a single Fen'Harel agent, what's up with that... I expected to be fighting Elves based on the epilogue in Tresspasser but ?? ???

3. I'm sorry I HATE THEM DISREGARDING THE WELL OF SORROWS IN FAVOUR OF MORRIGAN WHEN SOLAS MAKES A HUGE DEAL OF YOU BEING TIED TO MYTHAL IF YOU DRANK FROM THE WELL. Oh sorry, if it was unimportant then why the fuck did you go on a monologue about how you're "her creature" and connected to her. It felt like a retcon of the importance placed on it in Inquisition and how much of a deal both Solas AND Morrigan make about it. I'm sorry picking a ROMANCE was more important than acknowledging THIS?? ? ??

"But Ravie, they can't account for Inquisitors personality and making them important would piss people off" then just kill them off. If they're set on Morrigan carrying this piece of narrative, I would have written the Inquisitor off the table before the choice becomes relevant. Have them help you in the ritual at the start of the game and die. I feel similarly about Varric, because he feels like the writers stuffed him in the closet to not talk which just...JUST KILL HIM. Its better than being relegated to furniture!!!!

3. Speaking of Morrigan why the hell is so nice. This is not my beautiful mean witch wife. In fact everyone is nice. Even hardened Lucanis has been polite to me.

4. I HAVE A BONE TO PICK WITH ROOK. I profoundly hate starting off friends with Varric (and him getting shelved like what was the point). It ruins a lot of initial RP for character establishment, because it limits how the player character FEELs about the whole thing, your motivations are GIVEN to you. Furthermore, it feels like rook HAS an established character. I don't feel like I got to play my rook, just say things slightly differently based on an already established character. I dont feel like I am roleplaying a custom character, just as Biowares stand in protagonist. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the level of interaction that BG3 provided me.

The opening sequence is bizarre to me, because IF I MAKING THE STORY....I would have had the introductory quests for each of the companions be the first quest based on the faction you select (Shadow dragons with Neve, Mournwatch with Emmerich, Crows with Lucanis etc. etc.) That way you establish your character based on the faction and immediately get a little tutorial on what kind of character you're going to be playing. I would even keep the introductory quests the same with minor dialogue tweaks. The ritual would come after the tutorial prologue mission and then you start with Harding and the companion you got introduced with, since the order you get them...really doesn't matter or impact anything.

5. I think the Venatori and Antaam following Elven Mage Gods is kinda dumb. Sorry. I thought they both looked down on them for being either Elves or Mages/didn't even acknowledge them. What the hell is their goal anyway

My criticisms comes down to...I don't know what themes the game is trying to tackle? The game SAYS things but doesn't actually do anything with these topics. Minrathous HAS a slavery problem but we don't see it. Treviso is ruled by a faction of assassins but it's like a good thing! Elven gods are responsible for everything wrong in the world, but the narrative implications of what that means for modern elves are acknowledged in passing like acknowledging the weather. The game feels hesitant to actually unpack any of these things despite being the one to put them on the table.

Anyway I am going to finish the game and probably play on Daee with a Solavellan Inquisitor to see if that improves my experience by picking a character who is more tailored to the Rook they portray/not having an emotional connection to the Inky, but atm...Man I Had Hopes. Made me feel stupid for getting so hyped up for a conclusion to a story arc for a character THEY SPECIFICALLY LEFT ON A CLIFFHANGER FOR A DECADE. I'll just draw art, lie face down in the ground and imagine a more narratively satisfying conclusion to my Inquisitors story.

Solas as Lavellan talks about how she discovered he's the Dread Wolf. I don't know how to describe this expression, sad, fond, proud? I think there would be a "Solas approves" here tho 🥲

(Though judging by how Solas' bags in DAV + that bit told in the GI article, she wasn’t exactly wrong to say "I cannot bear to think of you alone")

I still can't believe that, besides his visits to her dreams (which I think is probably a whole other post), this is the last time they meet. Pretty sure DAV is 8 years after this.

This was devastating. Both of them are wrecked, this is not what they want, but it's the path Solas has chosen to walk through. It hurts because falling in love with Lavellan is probably one of the few times in a while that Solas has done something just for himself, not for the cause, not for the people, but Solas

and he has to break it off. No matter how Lavellan and the other members of the Inquisition have helped him see people as, you know, people, this is a mission he has set for himself, something he believes he has to do, his duty.

(Also, I forgot to mention it during the Crestwood post, but it hurts when he stops saying vhenan and changes to Inquisitor)

So, Solas drags his feet, walking slowly, but still walks away from Lavellan and towards the eluvian. He walks away from the person who fell in love with him when he was just Solas, and walks towards the path where he is Fen'Harel, the god of rebellion who has tried to help his people, even if it doesn't turn out well.

He leaves behind a Lavellan whose heart is breaking for the 3rd time because of the same man, who has to deal with what happens with the Inquisition (mine disbanded with the angry option), and the loss of an arm. Also, you know, dealing with the fact that he is an elven god and wants to destroy the veil.

So, yeah...

Sorry that this got a bit very rambly 😅 I just finished the game a little over 2 weeks ago, and there are a lot of thoughts running around my head.

I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with Solas in DAV, and how the Inquisitor will be integrated into the game as well. (side note, I'm so curious about that, bc they haven't even mentioned if the Inky CC will have the same options as Rook) (I just want to know if there are prosthetics and if they can have body tattoos)

(10) Rivain. I didn't think we'd see it in this game. After DAV we will have explored all regions of Thedas. That fact worries me a little, but I'm excited to see it.

(11) Steamy and sweet Davrin romance scene. Sten cameo. And an expansion akin to Awakening to finish things off with a bang.

(12) If Varric dies I don't want to see Rook cry for him. My sister in Mythal you do not even know that man.

(13) The return of the mf king: the Duelist skill tree. I had so much fun with it in DAII and I hope it's just as good in DAV. Rogue players lost the battle (least favorite hero armor) but won the war (best specialization).

(16) That after-credits scene with Solas & Flemeth didn't actually happen. Dumat showed Solas that to convince him to drop the Veil. She's not really dead. 🤷🏿‍♀️

(19) I'm too busy to replay anything. I bought & read Dark Fortress last week, picked up World of Thedas vol. I, and that might be my limit. :')

LOVE the change in combat. i remember them saying they were leaning a little more hack and slashy and im very pleased with it so far. i’ve said before that i wish it was a little more involved and let you target and that’s exactly what we go!!!!

i might be able to somehow dig up screen shots of my convo with mike laidlaw but sadly i think those died along with one of my hard drives :( (and that twitter account is long deleted) but yeah even back when choices still "mattered" they didn't seem to care like. bro i don't think they even know what people liked about dragon age at this point. i remember flipping out when you were able to trigger a conversation between dark ritual warden alistair and morrigan in dai about kieran and it's not even my canon world state!!! and losing tiny little moments like that that aren't even that hard (30 seconds of dialogue and characters just standing in front of each other!!! not even a cutscene!!!) it's like they don't even know what we like about the game :/

i'm gonna still play it and enjoy it though (lmao i just love this universe too much) i'm not gonna lie like i can never hate a dragon age game. Like. The whole thing of keeping secrets. Carrying the guilt of failing a whole people, and trying to right it, while only able to ever seemingly select wrongs. Had he even loved anyone, before it all? Certainly not during it; by the time Solas was awake again, guilt was consuming him in waves. He was weak, and could only put together a history he'd missed... Regrets formed out of a love for the people he was most fond of.

...And yet, it's out of those broken people that they happened. Idc on anyone being like, "I want to romance him as [other race]," THE POINT IS the poignance of him looking at an "echo" of his true people (an elf!!), and yet..... He knows he shouldn't, and yet.......

I am ILL with the fact that he loves the Inq. I've seen a post arguing/wondering it. He does. Does he love them more than trying to correct his prior mistake...? Alas, no. AND YET HE DOES LOVE THEM!!!!!!

Technically, the first kiss goes to Inq. for kissing him in the first place; they're the one to jump the minor, street blockade to kiss him in the first place!!! BUT-!!!! When their confidence to continue and pursue it further fails more than a...rather chaste kiss, Solas is the one to shake his head, and pull them in for more.

{ He very much did not have to!! He has a temporary regret over it, even, how he caved right quickly to his desires...and yet, if Inq gives the nudge of, "No, I do want this," he doesn't...stop it, either. He relents just as quickly.

Like. There are no fights. He can be a bit on edge or defensive, but the moment he is called out for it/pointed out, he apologies, puts down his hang-ups, and continues to speak with clarity on whatever was troubling him.

He’s not wholly truthful, of course; he had doubts until the end if he could trust his own love…..

But holy fuck, you can call him out on that.

For example, the now loved phrase that Solas tells the player in a romance: "Ar lath 'ma vhen'an." While in the game it is written as "Ar lath ma vhen'an," I believe this is incorrect (I am love you home? huh?). In this case, 'ma is a contraction of mine. Translated literally it would mean "I am love, my home," (remember, 'to be' can be implied). It should be noted that 'home,' has many translations within Elvhen, as they are a very symbolic people. They have a different word for the literal (arla), conceptual (in), and symbolic (vhen'an) meanings for 'home.' In the case of vhen'an, this is the symbolic meaning, which is why a second translation for vhen'an is 'heart.' "Ar lath 'ma vhen'an." I love you. You are my home. | I love you. You are my heart.

2. which dragon age game is your favourite so far?

its probably da2 at the moment... origins is my bestie forever and ever and ever but replaying da2 is just so fun. the combat is sexy (EXCEPT THE ARISHOK FIGHT AS ANYTHING OTHER THAN A MAGE) the story is sexy red hawke is sexy etc. while i don't think it's the best in terms of narrative (origins outsold forever, again) it IS the most fun for me to play again and again because the narrative still SLAPS and my favourite guys (merrill and fenris) are there

6. do you have your rooks planned out to some degree?

mf i am in your dms about this every day. yes and no. i have some vague concepts (veiljumpers i am in your walls) but i know myself and it does not matter how much i plan it out i will get in that character creator for the first time, black out and end up with whatever most speaks to me at the moment, and THEN i will be able to start thinking about rooks for the rest of my worldstate. i think worldstate codeword noble should have a human rook to keep the bit going. we'll see.

15. do you have any unpopular opinions about da:v so far?

uhhh well when the trailer dropped my unpopular opinion was that i actually like the more stylized art but i feel like public opinion on that has really swung around since the gameplay reveal? i have others but i also have self preservation and i simply do not want to be executed for [redacted] crimes so i will keep them to myself. but an actual unpopular opinion is i do not want to see fenris in that damn game no matter how hot he would be in the new style because i live in fear of someone actually making that fuckass david gaider "fenris would be team solas" tweet a reality. he would not fucking say that.

19. are you planning to replay any other games or read/watch any other material?

i have no solid plans lmao i go where the wind takes me... i might try and read tevinter nights before the game comes out since it seems pretty pertinent to the content and i like to Know things first hand but i am also gonna be pretty busy between now and a potential release so i make no promises.
