23 WORKER’S STARTED A LABOR PROTEST
Regent Foods Corporation Faces Labor Protest as Workers Demand Fair Treatment
Manila - Regent Foods Corporation, a leading food manufacturer in Pasig, Metro Manila, is facing a labor protest as workers demand fair treatment and better working conditions.
The protest, which began on October 6, involves hundreds of workers from Regent Foods Corporation's factory, who are demanding better wages, improved safety standards, and an end to discrimination and harassment in the workplace. According to the workers, they have been subjected to unfair treatment and hazardous working conditions, which have put their health and safety at risk. They claim that they are not being paid fair wages for their work and are being denied basic benefits, such as healthcare and sick leave.
The workers have also accused the company of discrimination and harassment, claiming that they have been subjected to verbal abuse and intimidation by their supervisors and colleagues. RFC reprimanded Mr. Sotto in a social media post after he assisted the 23 workers in posting bail after they were jailed on Nov. 9 following a violent dispersal at the picket line.
Sotto stated that he met with and listened to both Regent management and employees during a protest that led to violence and the arrest of 23 people: 20 workers, two members of another organization, and a tricycle driver who "just went down to see what was going on." Twelve people have been released on bond, including the tricycle driver for whom Sotto claims they obtained funds, while 11 remain in jail.
The youthful mayor said he requested owners Irwin and Susan See to drop the accusations, and the couple indicated they would talk with their board of directors. Sotto said he learned on Saturday that the corporation would not withdraw the complaint. Sotto, who overturned the Eusebio dynasty in Pasig in May, promised to "do everything in my power to assist these 23 in regaining/maintaining their liberty." Meanwhile, labor groups praised Sotto's support for the workers and asked for his assistance, warning that the Regent administration will file more cases against the unions.

Here are my lovely Secret Santa treats from the fabulous @wheel-of-fish !!! I love cats and Christmas lights--Fish combined both into a lovely string of cat shaped string lights!   I love sweet treats and the Jelly Babies are amazing!  (Yes I just opened this package within the quarter hour and yes I am already eating the Jelly Babies....I regret nothing except not going up to check the mail sooner!)
The Stroopwafels fulfill a desire previously unknown to me for baked waffle treats filled with caramel...my surname, which Fish did not know, is Dutch, as is part of my paternal ancestry, and the Stroopwafels come to me via Fish from Holland! I love hot chocolate and I believe the ice cream cone shaped treat is used in some manner to create hot chocolate and I am highly motivated to figure out how! Background Erik seems particularly interested in the l’il bunny, which hold bubble solution and even without such a fun purpose, is just incredibly cute! And lastly a lovely deer ornament--again Fish could not know that for years I have been slowly planning and collecting ornaments to have a tree someday trimmed with nothing but things found in nature, animals, birds, leaves, pinecones, snowflakes--and the deer will always remind me of Fish and her fondness for them! The accompanying card featured a little snowman asking “Got snow?”  and the reason I did not get the mail sooner is--wow yes, we got snow, an actual rip-roaring blizzard, the worse storm I personally have ever been out in, which started Wednesday afternoon, plunged the morning temperature of 45 degrees Fahrenheit down to 0 degrees by evening (7 C down to -18 C), had winds of 50 mph gusting to 68 mph, and whiteout conditions.  Where I happened to have been assigned to work that day was in a northwest suburb that by chance had the highest recorded snow total of the metropolitan area.  They say it was 9 inches but I can tell you that is a severe underestimate.  Had to dig my car out three times just trying to get out of the parking lot, traveled 20 feet on the road and said Nope, not driving in this and headed for a hotel. So I was away from home...and many things I needed to do...for an unexpected 48 hours. Anyway, home and safe and all is well.  In less than 2 hours, I will be a giddy attendee of the Saturday Stream.
Fish, I have told you I think, what you and these streams have meant to me, but in case I wasn’t clear, or even if I was, I want to tell you again.
Phantom fandom hit me like a bolt out of a forgotten blue on November 30th 2019 when I attended the restaged helmed by Derrick Davis as the Phantom.  I will tell another time the fuller tale, but suffice to say I had never seen the musical, and had no idea about many of the major plot points...most especially Christine’s gift of kisses to the Phantom, which sparks an awakening of love and compassion in a man who has been tragically abused and set aside from humanity his whole life.  Despite the flaws inherent in this staging, the story and themes were still powerful, especially as performed with his whole being by Derrick Davis.  It set its hooks in me like nothing has in a very long time, sparking my own awakening of interest and creativity and a desire to be involved with people who felt a similar pull.  I saw that production three more times in three different states in total.
Then in February I chanced, from where I lurked outside of tumblr and read various blogs,  upon the listing for a special Satruday Stream, February 15th...and the magic words “shy anons welcome” enabled me to find the courage to attend. Since I was not on tumblr, I missed the restart of regularly scheduled streams mid-March but found them after the first few and haven’t missed any since. To say this has been life changing for me is...an understatement.  I went from barely being able to bear being online in my own home to anticipating it.  From being so scared to attend that first stream to having them be the absolute highlight of my week.  From having written only one piece of fanfiction in more than ten years to posting my seventh Phantom of the Opera story just this week. From having no one who counted this as their primary fandom to so many fellow phans and now, several who have become true friends as well.  From never believing I would ever be able to engage in any form of social media to...well, going on far too long, in public, in this message, on my very own tumblr, right now. A tumblr that now has a header of Derrick Davis, my first transformational Phantom, created for me by a friend, and commissioned for me...by you, Fish. Full circle.  A pleasing symmetry.  Rebirth. I can never ever thank you enough for what you have done for me, helping me to communicate from outside of tumblr and gently, gently, gently coaxing me into the light.
And now this tremendous gift and the thoughtfulness of all your choices. Thank you Fish, now and always, and merry merry Christmas to you and all your family.

LAS VEGAS (September 20, 2021) — Brooklyn’s newest young knockout prodigy and a former unified world champion from Philadelphia will see action Saturday, Oct. 9 at T-Mobile Arena in preliminary bouts before the highly anticipated heavyweight trilogy grudge match between WBC and lineal heavyweight world champion Tyson “The Gypsy King” Fury and former heavyweight world champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder. Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga will fight former world title challenger Marcelo Esteban “El Terrible” Coceres in a scheduled 10-round showdown for the vacant NABO super-middleweight belt, while Julian “J-Rock” Williams will face Mexico’s Vladimir Hernandez in a 10-round junior middleweight bout in his first fight since losing his title belts. Berlanga-Coceres and Williams-Hernandez will be televised live at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on ESPN2, ESPN Deportes, FS1 and FOX Deportes, and simulcast on ESPN+. Preliminary bouts will stream live on the ESPN App and FOX Sports App starting at 4:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. PT. The all-heavyweight Fury vs. Wilder III ESPN+ and FOX Sports PPV bonanza begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and features 2016 Nigerian Olympian “The One and Only” Efe Ajagba squaring off against fellow unbeaten Frank “The Cuban Flash” in the 10-round co-main event; the highly anticipated 12-round rematch between Robert “The Nordic Nightmare” Helenius and Adam “Babyface” Kownacki; and the eight-round PPV opener featuring 21-year-old sensation Jared “The Real Big Baby” Anderson versus Russian veteran Vladimir Tereshkin. Tickets for Fury vs. Wilder III are on sale now and can be purchased at www.t-mobilearena.com or www.axs.com. The event is promoted by Top Rank, BombZquad Promotions, TGB Promotions and Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions. A Premier Boxing Champions presentation. Berlanga (17-0, 16 KOs), the Brooklyn-bred puncher with Puerto Rican roots, became one of boxing’s most talked-about fighters by scoring first-round knockouts in his first 16 fights. The 2020 Prospect of the Year, he’s walked to the ring with mentor and multi-platinum hip hop artist Fat Joe and become a social media sensation with his highlight-reel stoppages. The knockout streak ended in April, as Berlanga knocked down Demond Nicholson four times in eight rounds and had to settle for a unanimous decision. Coceres (30-2-1, 16 KOs), from Argentina, challenged Billy Joe Saunders for the WBO super middleweight world title in November 2019 and was nearly level on the scorecards before being knocked out in the 11th round. He last fought in June, knocking out Nelson Nicolas Rosalez in the second round. Berlanga said, “I am thrilled to be fighting on the Fury-Wilder III card, and I am coming do what I always do, which is to steal the show and knock out my opponent in devastating fashion. Coceres is in for a rude awakening on October 9. Do not get up for a snack when I’m fighting. It’s going to be a short, brutal night. Count on it.” “Berlanga can say what he wants about making it a short night or whatever. The biggest talkers are usually the most insecure,” said Coceres. “I know what I bring to the table. I’ve been in there with the better fighters, while he’s feasted on a diet of nobodies. In my mind, it won’t be an upset when I beat this kid. On October 9, it is man versus boy, and that boy is in for a rude awakening.” Philadelphia’s Williams (27-2-1, 16 KOs) became a unified world champion at 154-pounds in May 2019 when he upset Jarrett Hurd in one of the year’s best fights, winning a close-quarters brawl by unanimous decision. The 31-year-old dropped the titles in his first defense, losing to Jeison Rosario in January 2020. Williams had been riding a five-fight winning streak going into the Rosario matchup, in which he added victories over former champion Ishe Smith and hard-hitting contender Nathaniel Gallimore to his ledger. He returns to action on Oct. 9 against the 32-year-old Hernandez (12-4, 6 KOs). Originally from Durango, Mexico, Hernandez now lives in Denver, Colorado, and most recently earned a decision victory over longtime contender Alfredo Angulo in August 2020. "I’m thankful for the opportunity to compete on this amazing card," said Williams. "I’m excited to be getting back in the ring and starting my journey back to the very top of the division." “I’m very thankful for this opportunity to get back in the ring on October 9,” said Hernandez. “I expect Julian Williams to be prepared like I am to give the fans a great fight. I have been doing nothing but staying ready and training since my last fight. I promise that I’m going to bring the action when that bell rings.” Preliminary bouts include a 10-round featherweight bout between two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist Robeisy “El Tren” Ramirez (7-1, 4 KOs) and unbeaten Puerto Rican prospect Orlando “Capu” Gonzalez (17-0, 10 KOs), heavyweight phenom Viktor Faust (7-0, 5 KOs) in an eight-rounder against Mike Marshall (6-1, 4 KOs), the pro debut of former U.S. amateur star Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington in a four-round featherweight contest against an opponent to be named, and junior welterweight standout Elvis “The Dominican Kid” Rodriguez (11-1-1, 10 KOs) versus Victor Vazquez (11-5, 5 KOs) in an eight-rounder.

There is no word “subfluence,” or only barely one. This started with the self-written biographical note of poet Jack Hirschman, in A Caterpillar Anthology (Clayton Eshleman, ed., 1971) —
“They are lyrical poems, in verse or free-form, as distinguished from the poems in this anthology, which are breath forms reflecting a more total slavery to the conditions of the spirit’s war-torn years. The major influences on my works are influence itself, in as many levels of order, disorder, disaster, paranoia, joy and ecstasy as the deathless magic of being alive permits a vessel now of fire, now of air, to spark, glow, flame and ember according to the law of nature.”
“Influence” — that word — led to thinking about variations, e.g., effluence, outfluence, pre-fluence... “subfluence” — an underground stream a less-than fluency (stammering, stuttering) a brittleness?
Little — or nothing — surfaced in a google books search, save for errors — typically a “sub” at the end of one line, a “fluence” at the start of the next (in a different column). Quite enough for present purposes. And so these subfluence derivations are built around a word that isn’t quite a word. Some license has been taken with the text in this post: dispensing ellipsis or [brackets] where text is erased (or rather, dropped); in some instances, some words that preceded the subfluence, are moved to follow it.
2
And yet, the word does appear, in some (and only a few) geological texts, typically having to do with the geotectonic unterströmungshypothese (undercurrent) concepts — and field work done in the Northern Calcareous Alps — of and by Otto Ampferer (1875-1947). More on Ampferer to come. For now, these references —

Higher Education   B.A. in Biblical Ministry (2014), IBLP’s International Ministerial Institute  (Burnet, TX) (Note—Oddly, Brandon mentioned that his “final semester” at IMI was Fall 2013...  But, later, he’s still in school, and that’s why he and Michaela couldn’t get engaged until Spring 2015.  Duggar Data has a theory of why this is...  IMI is a 3–Year program, with an option to extend to 4 Years and earn a bachelor’s degree.  I think the 2013 graduation was from the 3–Year program.  Brandon must’ve opted to go for the bachelor’s degree, which explains the additional year.)
Occupation   [ Unknown ]
... Previously   Videographer / Creative Designer, Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP)  (Oak Brook, IL; ?—2019) (Note—Brandon first started working for IBLP in Chicago after his homeschool graduation, probably 2007 or 2008.  Bringing Up Bates (6–11–15), “Meet The Parents.”)
The Relationship—
First Meeting   c. March 2009
Location   IBLP Headquarters; Hinsdale, IL
Details   The Bates Family took a trip to Chicago, so that Michaela and her sisters could attend Journey to The Heart.  Before departing for the session, Michaela was at IBLP, where she happened to notice Brandon.  Brandon also recalls meeting the Bates Family, at that time.
Timing   We know that this all happened in 2009, “just after” Michaela’s 19th Birthday—i.e., January 23, 2009.  Apparently, it wasn’t immediately after, though, since Brandon recalls it as “Spring 2009.”  Duggar Data is pretty confident that it was March 2009—which is arguably in the spring—based on this Post on FreeJinger, reporting that that’s when Michaela did Journey to The Heart.  (Unfortunately, the Post cites to a page that’s now deleted, so it’s impossible to verify.)
Pre–Courtship   November 29, 2013  (See Also)  (Friday)
Location   by Phone  (Michaela in North Carolina.)
Details   After praying about it, Brandon called Gil Bates and asked him for permission to start a relationship with Michaela.  Gil and Kelly talked to Michaela, and called back later that day with their blessing.  Brandon then called Michaela, and their pre–courtship began.  (See Also.)
Timing   On the “Our Story” Posts on their website, both of the Keilens recall the fateful first phone call happening on Black Friday 2013.  (Note—Thanksgiving 2013 was on November 28, so Black Friday was on the 29th.)  Oddly, some other evidence contradicts this, indicating it was on November 28.  Duggar Data can’t really explain why...  Brandon realized his feelings on November 28th, then called Gil on the 29th?  Regardless, my spreadsheet has November 29 as their Pre–C.S. Date, based on the “Our Story” Posts.
Tumblr media
Courtship   December 30, 2013  (Monday)
Location   Restaurant at The English Inn; Eaton Rapids, MI
Details   While Michaela was visiting Brandon in Michigan, they went on a date to The English Inn.  Over dinner, Brandon gave Michaela a journal, a poem professing his love, and a gold–plated dried rose, then asked her to start an official courtship.  She agreed.
Announced   January 2, 2014 on the Bates Family Website  (+3 Days)
Tumblr media
Engagement   April 13, 2015  (See Also)  (Monday)
Location   Great Falls Park; McLean, VA  (See Bringing Up Bates (7–9–15), “Brandon Pops The Question.”)
Details   Brandon set up a scavenger hunt for Michaela, which led her all over the Washington, DC Area.  It coincided with cherry blossom season, which was a nice touch.  After a few too many clues, Michaela ended up at Great Falls Park, where Brand was waiting with the ring.  (Bringing Up Bates (7–9–15), “Brandon Pops The Question.”)

Infertility Struggle—
Since their marriage, Michaela + Brandon have struggled with infertility.  They went public with their struggle in January 2017, when they chose to discuss it on Bringing Up Bates (1–26–17), “Doggy Dilemmas.”  They have shared since shared additional details about their infertility on the show, their personal blog, and social media.  Here’s what we know—
Firstly, Michaela + Brandon very, very much want children, and it was expected they’d probably have a large family.  Here’s what’s been said about this—
Michaela:  “Brandon and I have talked a lot about having children...  I would have as many as I possibly could.”  (Bringing Up Bates [BUB] (1–22–15), “Training Up Bates.”)
Michaela (on the Keilens’ Blog):  “Growing up I always dreamed of being a mother someday. ... Children were the greatest miracle in my eyes, and I spent all my free time babysitting.  Every time I rocked a baby to sleep, I dreamed of someday cuddling my own little one.”
Brandon:  “That ... is an area we want the Lord to have control in. ...  He is just saying no for now.  We hope it’s not no for always—but, it’s no for now.”  (BUB (1–26–17), “Doggy Dilemmas.”)
Kelly:  “Everyone in the family has always predicted and said, ‘Michaela is going to be the one that has a really, super large family.’”  (BUB (1–26–17), “Doggy Dilemmas.”)
After 6 Months of marriage, Michaela + Brandon began to worry that Michaela wasn’t getting pregnant.  (BUB (1–26–17), “Doggy Dilemmas.”)  Michalea went to her doctor, who ran a few tests but told her:  “Don’t even think about a baby until you’ve been married at least a year…  Babies take time!”
By the Keilens’ 1st Anniversary, Michaela still wasn’t pregnant, and the Keilens decided to see a fertility specialist.  (BUB (1–26–17), “Doggy Dilemmas.”)  The Keilens have shared quite a bit about this process, including the following—
The doctor did extensive testing.  Apparently, Michaela + Brandon were both examined.  (BUB (1–25–18), “SUN Day, Fun Day.”)  Brandon hasn’t commented publicly on the process, but Michaela has...  She described doing “a lot of bloodwork,” and  getting “a lot of ultrasounds.”  (BUB (8–31–17), “Here’s The Scoop.”)  She stated that, over the course of a year, they “tried all of the major tests”—racking up significant medical bills, in the process.  (BUB (1–11–18), “Decorating Dilemmas Job Decisions.”)
Despite all the testing, the doctor hasn’t been able to determine what’s causing their fertility struggle.  (See BUB (8–31–17), “Here’s The Scoop” and BUB (1–25–18), “SUN Day, Fun Day.”)
One thing the tests did show is that Michaela hyper–ovulates.  Bringing Up Bates hasn’t mentioned what’s causing this, or whether her doctors even determined a cause.  (Medically speaking, hyper–ovulation means that, if Michaela conceives, she’s at increased risk of having multiples.)  (BUB (1–25–18), “SUN Day, Fun Day.”)
Around August 2017, Michaela decided to undergo one final test, “then take a little break” from all the medical intervention in her infertility.  The test was a hysterosalpingogram—i.e., a medical procedure that uses x–ray to visualize scarring in the uterus or fallopian tubes.  Dr. Vick did the test.  He identified, and was able to clear, a fallopian tube blockage.  He advised the Keilens to wait three cycles, then consider surgery if they’re still unable to conceive.  (BUB (1–25–18), “SUN Day, Fun Day.”)
As of 2020, it’s unknown if Michaela got—or intends to get—the surgery that Dr. Vick mentioned.
Michaela has said that she is interested in adoption, if she’s unable to have her own children, saying:  “Someday [I’ll have a baby], maybe, and if not, I’ll adopt me a baby.”  (BUB (8–31–17), “Here’s The Scoop.”)  As far as I know, Brandon hasn’t ever spoken publicly about the possibility of adoption, surrogacy, etc.
What’s Next—
The Predictor will assume a couple is incapable of having children if they’re 5+ SDs Late to announce Pregnancy #1, and they’ve been married for 5 Years.  In the Keilens’ case, they’re already >5 SDs Late to announce Pregnancy #1.  (As of April 11, 2020, they’re actually ~47 SDs Late...  Way, way later than 5 SDs...)  Their 5th Anniversary is this year, on August 15.  If they still haven’t announced a pregnancy by then, the Predictor will stop predicting children for them.
... That’s All The Data for Michaela + Brandon.

Adeline and Michael Are Engaged: Full Data
Tumblr media
Various Morton family members have been reporting that Adeline Morton and Michael Holloway have gotten engaged, and Addie even reported it publicly on her Facebook account. This comes as a surprise to Morton Data because they hadn’t been pictured together since August 2019, and I was under the impression they had broken up. It looks like they decided to step back from social media and didn’t actually break up.
Addie said on Facebook that they got engaged on July 4, 2020. She, 28, was born on July 15, 1991, and Michael, 22, was born on July 20, 1997.
All of the information in this post is back in the Morton Predictor, and this post will cover everything related to their engagement and predictions based on it.
How does their data compare to the rest of the family? After the jump!
Tumblr media
The Relationship
Adeline and Michael never stated the exact nature of their relationship, but they were first confirmed to be a couple on May 1, 2019, on a visit to her siblings in Paraguay. Given a July 4, 2020 engagement, that means they courted/dated for 430 Days before the proposal. This is a hugely long relationship for her family; in fact, it’s over 10 Standard Deviations longer than the Average Morton Courtship of 46 Days. The Average Morton Courtship now lasts 101 Days (55 Days Longer, more than twice as long as it was before).
Tumblr media
Predictions
Wedding: November 21, 2020
Baby News: April 2, 2021
Firstborn: September 18, 2021
Total Quiver: 9 Children
In more detail:
Tumblr media
Marriage
The average Morton engagement lasts for 143 Days before marriage and varies by a Standard Deviation of 82 Days. As a result, based on the data, there’s a 68% chance that a Morton engagement will result in a wedding 61-205 Days later. Given their engagement date, the predicted wedding dates are as follows:
Earliest (+ 61 Days): September 5, 2020
Average (+ 143 Days): November 21, 2020 (Predictor uses this one)
Latest (+ 205 Days): January 23, 2021
Note that the wedding dates are adjusted to Saturdays, when all of the Morton weddings have been scheduled.
Tumblr media
Pregnancy Announcement and Firstborn
The typical Morton firstborn arrives a blistering 302 Days after their parents say their vows, with a standard deviation of 46 Days. That gives us a 68% chance that any given Morton firstborn will arrive between 256-348 Days after the wedding. The three wedding dates above correspond to the following three firstborn birth dates:
Earliest (+ 256 Days): May 19, 2021
Average (+ 302 Days): September 18, 2021
Latest (+ 348 Days): January 6, 2022
Future Quiver
The typical Morton couple reproduces at a rate of 1 Child Every 538 Days, with a Standard Deviation of 189 Days. That’s a 68% chance for each child to come 349-727 Days after the next. Matching each relationship speed with its corresponding procreation speed, we have:
Fastest (1 Every 349 Days): 14 Children
Average (1 Every 538 Days): 9 Children
Slowest (1 Every 727 Days): 7 Children
Fundies never cease to surprise.

Trump Using Last Days to Lock In Policies (NYT) Voters have decided that President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. should guide the country through the next four years. But on issues of war, the environment, criminal justice, trade, the economy and more, President Trump and top administration officials are doing what they can to make changing direction more difficult. Top officials are racing against the clock to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, secure oil drilling leases in Alaska, punish China, carry out executions and thwart any plans Mr. Biden might have to reestablish the Iran nuclear deal. In some cases, like the executions and the oil leases, Mr. Trump’s government plans to act just days—or even hours—before Mr. Biden is inaugurated on Jan. 20. At a wide range of departments and agencies, Mr. Trump’s political appointees are going to extraordinary lengths to try to prevent Mr. Biden from rolling back the president’s legacy. They are filling vacancies on scientific panels, pushing to complete rules that weaken environmental standards, nominating judges and rushing their confirmations through the Senate, and trying to eliminate health care regulations that have been in place for years. Mr. Biden and his top aides have not publicly criticized the president’s policy actions at home or abroad, abiding by the tradition that there is only one president at a time. But the president-elect has vowed to move quickly to undo many of Mr. Trump’s domestic and foreign policies.
Doctors and nurses want more data before championing vaccines to end the pandemic (Washington Post) Doctors and nurses, coping with the daily risk of coronavirus exposure, are expected to get top priority to receive vaccines that could become available as soon as next month. But it’s an open question how many will seize their place at the front of the line. The hesitancy of some health-care workers is attracting attention as the first two vaccines, from Pfizer and Moderna, near deployment. Government, academic, and health-care officials say that significant numbers of providers want more data about the vaccine before it is deployed. A report released Thursday by the University of California at Los Angeles researchers said that 66 percent of Los Angeles health-care workers who responded to an online questionnaire (not a randomized sample) said they would delay taking a vaccine. The American Nurses Association, a national union, said one-third of its members do not intend to take the vaccine, and an additional third are undecided. Among professionals contacted by the state of New Jersey, “some did not want to be in the first round, so they could wait and see if there are potential side effects,” New Jersey Health Commissioner Judith M. Persichilli said at a Nov. 9 news briefing. Health-care leaders say President Trump’s frequent promises about vaccines have raised doubts about the objectivity of agency reviews, as have the speed of the manufacturers’ clinical trials, and unfamiliarity with the novel techniques used by the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to trigger natural antibodies.
Music to get us through (NYT) At the fearful height of the pandemic in April, Simon Gronowski, an 89-year-old Holocaust survivor, began playing jazz tunes on his piano from his apartment window in Brussels, bringing relief to his besieged neighbors throughout the lockdown that lasted into late May. “Music is a means of communication, of connection,” said Mr. Gronowski, who taught himself how to play the piano as a teenager after escaping the Nazis. Piano was a way for him to connect with his sister who had died in Auschwitz. Throughout the summer and into the fall, live jazz has become a near-constant presence across New York City. The makeshift outdoor shows have been therapeutic for musicians and fans alike.
Homicides skyrocket across U.S. during pandemic (Washington Post) In Greensboro, N.C., the violence has gotten so extreme that a shootout erupted in front of the county courthouse the other day, across the street from the sheriff’s office, leaving a 20-year-old man dead. Greensboro set a city record with 45 homicides last year, and, as of Friday, already had 54 this year. “We’ve always had a level of gang activity,” Greensboro Police Chief Brian James said in an interview, “but it’s more prolific now. I’m not sure what’s changed, but the offenders are more bold than they’ve ever been.” Homicides across America rose more than 28 percent in the first nine months of this year, and aggravated assaults increased nine percent, while rapes and robberies saw significant drops compared to the same period last year, according to statistics compiled this month from 223 police agencies. Some police commanders say the twin impacts of the coronavirus and civil uprisings against police violence caused them to redirect their officers away from proactive anti-crime programs, whether due to virus-related budget cuts or strategic redeployment of forces to handle the unrest. Other officials point to job loss and other stresses of the pandemic as fueling tension and leading to violence. And with many schools shuttered, police say, many areas have seen a rise in violence involving juveniles.
Charleston weighs wall as seas rise and storms strengthen (AP) Vickie Hicks, who weaves intricate sweetgrass baskets in Charleston, South Carolina’s historic city market, remembers climbing onto the table at her grandmother’s booth downtown when the floodwaters rushed by. Decades later, the seasoned seller of this art form passed down by descendants of West African slaves still works downtown, where merchants regularly set out sandbags and scrutinize daily weather forecasts. Hicks says the flooding’s only gotten worse. “God’s taking back his land,” she said. Now, the low-lying Atlantic seaport is considering its most drastic measure yet to protect the lives and livelihoods of residents like Hicks from the threats of climate-driven flooding: walling off its peninsula from the ocean. In 2019, the downtown flooded a record 89 times according to the National Weather Service—mostly from high tides and wind pushing water inland. And the city could flood up to 180 times per year by 2045 according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. There’s also the threat each year that hurricane-driven storm surge could inundate the city’s peninsula, which is at the confluence of three rivers and mostly less than 20 feet (6.1 meters) above sea level.
Protesters in Guatemala Set Fire to Congress Building Over Spending Cuts (NYT) Thousands of protesters took to the streets in Guatemala’s capital on Saturday, setting fire to the nation’s congressional building in a show of anger over a budget bill passed this week that cut funding for health care and education. The demonstrations in Guatemala City, which also included peaceful marches in the central plaza, rocked a nation still recovering from back-to-back hurricanes that displaced thousands of people, destroyed homes and obliterated critical infrastructure. As heavy rains brought on by the second storm pummeled impoverished towns in Guatemala’s highlands and coastal regions on Wednesday, the country’s Congress passed a budget that cut spending on education and health in favor of increasing lawmakers’ meal stipends. The bill, which also proposed gutting funding to combat malnutrition and slashed funding for the judiciary, set off immediate outrage and led to demonstrations across the country. One group of protesters kicked in the windows of the Congress building and set a fire that sent flames billowing out of the entrance, social media videos showed. Police officers sprayed tear gas at demonstrators and firefighters quickly put the blaze out, according to local news reports.
Russia’s health system under strain as the virus surges back (AP) When Yekaterina Kobzeva, a nurse at a preschool in Russia’s Ural Mountains, began having trouble breathing, she called an ambulance. It was four days before she managed to find a free hospital bed. She was only admitted after her story made local headlines. Russia’s health care system, vast yet underfunded, has been under significant strains in recent weeks, as the pandemic surges again and daily infections and virus death regularly break records. Reports in Russian media have painted a bleak picture in recent weeks. Hospital corridors are filled with patients on gurneys and even the floor. Bodies in black plastic bags were seen piling up on the floors of a morgue. Long lines of ambulances wait at hospitals while pharmacies put up signs listing the drugs they no longer have in stock. Russian authorities have acknowledged problems in the health system. President Vladimir Putin even urged regional officials not to paper over the situation, saying that “feigning the impression that everything is perfectly normal is absolutely unacceptable.” During the fall resurgence of the virus, the Kremlin has consistently pointed fingers at regional governors. Regional governors find themselves in an impossible position, explained political analyst Abbas Gallyamov. They face public frustration if they don’t impose tough restrictions and the outbreak continues to rage, and they face it if they do because they don’t have the funds to ease the pain of closures.
Azerbaijanis who fled war look to return home, if it exists (AP) As Azerbaijan regains control of land it lost to Armenian forces a quarter-century ago, civilians who fled the fighting decades ago wonder if they can go back home now—and if there’s still a home to go back to. An estimated 600,000 Azerbaijanis were displaced in the 1990s war that left the Nagorno-Karabakh region under the control of ethnic Armenian separatists and large adjacent territories in Armenia’s hands. During six weeks of renewed fighting this fall that ended Nov. 10, Azerbaijan took back parts of Nagorno-Karabakh itself and sizeable swaths of the outlying areas. More territory is being returned as part of the ceasefire agreement that stopped the latest fighting. But as Azerbaijani forces discovered when the first area, Aghdam, was turned over on Friday, much of the recovered land is uninhabitable. The city of Aghdam, where 50,000 people once lived, is now a shattered ruin.
China to launch moon probe, seeking first lunar rock retrieval since 1970s (Reuters) China plans to launch an unmanned spacecraft to the moon this week to bring back lunar rocks in the first attempt by any nation to retrieve samples from Earth’s natural satellite since the 1970s. The Chang’e-5 probe, named after the ancient Chinese goddess of the moon, will seek to collect material that can help scientists understand more about the moon’s origins and formation. The mission will test China’s ability to remotely acquire samples from space, ahead of more complex missions. If successful, the mission will make China only the third country to have retrieved lunar samples, following the United States and the Soviet Union decades ago.
In Lebanon, army courts target anti-government protesters (AP) Khaldoun Jaber was taking part in an anti-government protest near the presidential palace outside Beirut last November when several Lebanese intelligence officers in plainclothes approached and forcibly took him away. The demonstration was part of a wave of protests sweeping Lebanon against corruption and misrule by a group of politicians who have monopolized power since the country’s civil war ended three decades ago. Jaber didn’t know it then, but Lebanese security forces targeted him because of his social media posts criticizing President Michel Aoun. What followed were 48 harrowing hours of detention during which security officers interrogated him and subjected him to physical abuse, before letting him go. “Three of my teeth were broken and I lost 70% of my hearing in my left ear,” Jaber said. A year after mass protests roiled Lebanon, dozens of protesters are being tried before military courts, proceedings that human rights lawyers say grossly violate due process and fail to investigate allegations of torture and abuse. Defendants tried before the military tribunal say the system is used to intimidate protesters and prop up Lebanon’s sectarian rulers. The trials underscore the growing perils of activism in Lebanon, where a string of court cases and judicial investigations against journalists and critics has eroded the country’s reputation for free speech and tolerance in a largely autocratic Arab world.
Palestinian rocket fire draws Israeli air strikes in Gaza (Reuters) Palestinian militants fired a rocket into Israel, drawing Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli military said on Sunday. There were no casualties reported on either side of the border. Israeli police said the Gaza rocket fired on Saturday night damaged a factory in the southern city of Ashkelon. The Israeli military said its aircraft struck in response against several military sites belonging to Hamas, the Islamist armed group that controls Gaza.
‘Save yourselves’, Ethiopia tells Tigrayans as it moves on rebel-held capital (Reuters) Ethiopia’s army plans to surround the rebel-held capital of Tigray region with tanks and may use artillery on the city to try to end a nearly three-week war, a military spokesman said on Sunday, urging civilians to save themselves. The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which is refusing to surrender its rule of the northern region, said its forces were digging trenches and standing firm. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s federal troops have taken a string of towns during aerial bombardments and ground fighting, and are now aiming for Mekelle, a highland city of about 500,000 people where the rebels are based. The war has killed hundreds, possibly thousands, sent more than 30,000 refugees into neighbouring Sudan, and seen rockets fired by rebels into neighbouring Amhara region and across the border into the nation of Eritrea.

MONTHLY MEDIA: November 2019
Whoa November is over! So I didn’t see any movies this month but there are so many I want to check out. Parasite! Knives Out! Jojo Rabbit! Maybe December.
……….TELEVISION……….
Tumblr media
Daybreak (Episode 1.01 to 1.03) This seems like fun so far! Characters are great, the world seems well-established and feels like it’s been lived in for a while, and it’s really just the plot that I’m not clicking with. Most of the stuff works until it goes back to “gotta find dream girl!” It just feels...dull. Especially when compared to all the other far more interesting stuff going on. Gonna keep watching but hot dang I hope they move on from the “where’s Sam?” stuff soon.
The Good Place (Episode 4.01 to 4.05) I’m not ready for this series to end but hot dang does it feel like it knows where it’s going and how it’s going to get there. I’m just happy to be along for the ride.
Queer Eye: We’re In Japan! (Episode 1.01 to 1.04) I appreciate that they addressed the magic of translators at the end of the first ep and I wish they would’ve gone into more of it. Their “guide” was likely a choice based on social media influence and bilingualism, but it seemed like a missed opportunity to have a gay Japanese man introduce the Fab 5 to the culture. Even the comedian from Episode 3 seemed like a better fit. I just don’t know if I got the right introduction into various nuances of the culture, you know? Also this article says a lot more and in a much clearer way.
……….READING……….
Tumblr media
Emperor Mollusk Versus the Sinister Brain by A. Lee Martinez (Page 191 of 293) Very breezy and easy read but for an interplanetary romp with a hyper-smart squid as the protagonist, it isn’t quite connecting. The book is full of alien tropes and the premise is fun, but the lead character doesn’t really get challenged and there’s little impact from events as they happen. It feels pulpy but doesn’t seem to have the melodrama that makes it read like the author couldn’t commit to the bit.
A Spell for Chameleon by Piers Anthony (Complete) I have a vivid memory of seeing this cover when I was a child and really wanting to read it. So when I saw it at a thrift store I immediately picked it up. There were some fun magical ideas in here but it is dripping with so much 70s sexism that I can’t, in good faith, recommend this to anyone. If it was maybe one or two moments then you could maybe give some leniency to the era, but every chapter has at least one moment where the author takes a shot at women. It’s real bad.
Tumblr media
Silver Surfer Omnibus by Dan Slott, Michael Allred, Laura Allred, and many many more (9 issues/chapters in...sorry this book doesn’t really have page numbers) Okay I love it. I didn’t know what to expect but you know when you just have a gut feeling that you’ll like something? Exactly this. I knew nothing about Silver Surfer but the book catches you up and then takes you on a fun series of intergalactic adventures. When I realized it was essentially Marvel Doctor Who, I knew this was for me. I’m really taking my time with this cause I think it’s something special.
James Bond Origin by Jeff Parker, Bob Q, Roman Stevens, Jordan Boyd, Jordie Bellaire, and Simon Bowland (Complete) Pinpointing what makes a Bond story a “Bond” story is tricky. This series is a fun and engaging spy narrative, but I think showing the early days of Bond makes it read the same way Young Indiana jones felt: you know where they’re going but they’re not quite there yet. That isn’t to say it’s not great, cause it is. I suppose I’d just recommend this to those who like spy stories, narratives set during the second world war, or a combination of the two. Those are likely the same people as those who like James Bond as a character, but I think it lends itself more to the genre than the character. Great start to the series.
Tumblr media
Delicious in Dungeon: Volume 6 by Ryoko Kui (Complete) Still fantastic. It took a weird turn in the middle and I was worried it was moving away from the characters to focus on big fantastical monsters and melodrama, but it quickly corrected course. I can’t not recommend this to anyone who likes small fantasy with a gimmick.
The Tomb of Black Sand by Jacob Hurst, Gabriel Hernandez, and more! (Complete) This was mostly for research and I love this D&D module. It’s a fun concept with nuance and one of my favourite fundamental details: the characters are doing their own thing with their own goals and have been doing things before the party shows up. If you’re okay with spoilers, check out this review.
Tumblr media
The Wolves in the Walls by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean (Complete) It’s interesting reading a true picture book by Neil Gaiman. I enjoy it as an adult, but I wonder if it connects well with its target audience. With that said, I loved the craftsmanship of the story and seeing Gaiman’s work stripped down to its essentials really helps to understand his approach to writing.
……….AUDIO……….
Tumblr media
The Adventure Zone: Graduation (Podcast) Back to D&D and having Travis DM is a great change up! With that said, I’m having a hard time getting past the first ep. It introduces so many characters and so much world-building that I’m not really getting into it.
……….GAMING……….
Tumblr media
Untitled Goose Game (House House) Fantastic, silly fun. I love the concept and the execution is perfect. I wish the game was maybe...2 levels longer, but what we do have is fantastic. Highly recommend.
Tumblr media
Maze of the Blue Medusa (Satyr Press) The group just sorted out a major threat that has been following them throughout the dungeon. A peek behind the curtain: I’m not sure this module is connecting with the group. I don’t think there’s a clear goal and the party hasn’t really taken the initiative to make their own goals. Maybe that’s my fault and I think part of it has to do with our previous adventure being fairly bespoke and rather on rails. They loved it, but I also think it set a precedent. I need to pull back and chat with the players to see how they’re feeling.
A Red & Pleasant Land (Lamentations of the Flame Princess) We don’t get to play often but when we do, it’s a great time. The party stumbled into a genuine warzone and had their first taste of real danger. But they also landed their first true kill and it really had a lot of impact! Up until now, enemies have been whimsically changing when they “die” so to kill someone really meant something. It was a moment that really stuck with me.
And that’s it! As always, Let me know if you have anything you think I should check out and happy Saturday.

Keegan-Michael Key
Tumblr media
Keegan-Michael Key (born March 22, 1971) is an American actor, comedian, writer, and producer.
Key co-created and co-starred alongside Jordan Peele in Comedy Central's sketch series Key & Peele (2012–2015) and co-starred in USA Network's Playing House (2014–2017). He spent six seasons as a cast member on Mad TV (2004–2009) and has made guest appearances on the U.S. version of Whose Line is it Anyway? on The CW. He also appeared alongside Peele in the first season of the FX series Fargo in 2014, and had a recurring role on Parks and Recreation from 2013 to 2015. He hosted the U.S. version of The Planet's Funniest Animals on Animal Planet from 2005 until 2008.
Key has had supporting roles in several films, including Pitch Perfect 2 (2015), Don't Think Twice (2016), and Toy Story 4 (2019). Also in 2015, he appeared at the White House Correspondents' Dinner as the Key & Peele character Luther, President Barack Obama's anger translator. Key and Peele produced and starred in the 2016 action-comedy film Keanu. In 2017, Key made his Broadway debut in Steve Martin's Meteor Shower.
Early life
Key was born in Southfield, Michigan on March 22, 1971, the son of black father Leroy McDuffie and white mother Carrie Herr. He was adopted at a young age by a couple from Detroit, Michael Key and Patricia Walsh, who were both social workers. Like his birth parents, his adoptive parents were also a black man and white woman. Through his biological father, Key had two half-brothers, one of whom was comic book writer Dwayne McDuffie (1962–2011). Key only discovered the existence of his siblings after they had both died.
Key attended the University of Detroit Mercy as an undergraduate, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theater in 1993, followed by a Master of Fine Arts in theater at Pennsylvania State University in 1996. While at the University of Detroit Mercy, he was a brother of Phi Kappa Theta.
Career
Mad TV
In 2004, Key joined the cast of Mad TV midway into the ninth season. He and Jordan Peele were cast against each other, but both ended up being picked after demonstrating great comedic chemistry. Key played many characters on the show. One of his most famous characters is "Coach Hines", a high school sports coach who frequently disrupts and threatens students and faculty members. On the penultimate episode of Mad TV, Hines revealed that he is the long-lost heir to the Heinz Ketchup company and only became a Catholic school coach to help delinquent teenagers like Yamanashi (Bobby Lee). During seasons 9 and 10, Key appeared as "Dr. Funkenstein" in blaxploitation parodies, with Peele playing the monster. Key also portrayed various guests on Real **********ing Talk like the strong African Rollo Johnson and blind victim Stevie Wonder Washington. He often goes "backstage" as Eugene Struthers, an ecstatic water-or-flower delivery man who accosts celebrities. There is also "Jovan Muskatelle", a shirtless man with a jheri curl and a shower cap. He interrupts live news broadcasts by a reporter (always played by Ike Barinholtz), annoying him with rapid fire accounts of events that have happened frequently exclaiming "It was crazy as hell!" Celebrities that Key impersonated on the show include Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, Roscoe Orman (as his character Gordon from Sesame Street), Matthew Lillard, Bill Cosby, Al Roker, Terrell Owens, Tyler Perry, Keith Richards, Eddie Murphy (as his character James "Thunder" Early from the movie Dreamgirls), Sherman Hemsley (as his character George Jefferson on The Jeffersons), Charles Barkley, Sendhil Ramamurthy (as Mohinder Suresh), Tyson Beckford, Seal (originally played by Peele until Peele left the show at the end of season 13), Sidney Poitier, Lionel Richie, Barack Obama, Kobe Bryant and Jack Haley (as the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz). He also played female celebrities, including Phylicia Rashād, Robin Antin, and Eva Longoria (as Gabrielle Solis on a Desperate Housewives parody).
Key & Peele
Key and his former Mad TV castmate Jordan Peele starred in their own Comedy Central sketch series Key & Peele, which began airing on January 31, 2012 and ran for five seasons until September 9, 2015. Key and his comedy partner Jordan Peele starred in an episode of Epic Rap Battles of History, with Key playing Mahatma Gandhi and Peele playing Martin Luther King Jr. The pair returned to Epic Rap Battles of History with the "Muhammad Ali versus Michael Jordan" battle, with Key portraying Jordan.

This Week in Julie-history: Julie Andrews makes her solo television debut on 8 October 1949
Seventy years ago, the young Julie Andrews realised another major milestone in her budding career when she made her first solo television appearance in a special live broadcast of Radiolympia Showtime on October 8, 1949.*
At the time, British television was still in its infancy and Radiolympia –– an annual trade show held at the sprawling Olympia exhibition centre in London  –– was a major showcase for the new medium (Law, p. 49ff). The 1936 Radiolympia was where the BBC first launched its TV services to the British public and, by 1938, “television was the main feature of the show” (Briggs 1975, p. 537). The outbreak of war in 1939 saw Radiolympia -- as, indeed, the rollout of television -- put on hold for almost a decade. When the show returned in 1947 it “broke all attendance records” with over 450,000 admissions as the postwar British public clamoured for the sense of promissory modernity represented by television and the entertainment broadcast media (Briggs 1979, p. 201).
By the time of the 1949 Radiolympia, an estimated 200,000 British households had a television set with new licenses selling at the rate of 1,000 units per day––an impressive uptake given TV service was still limited to the greater London area (Hilmes, 31). The country was, however, poised to get its first regional relay transmitter near Birmingham in December of that year, bringing TV to a potential new market of 8.5 million viewers across the populous Midlands (Pawley, 366). Consequently, the 1949 Radiolympia shaped up as “[b]iggest drive ever to sell TV to the public” with "every known trick ...employed to glamorize this new entertainment medium” (“British Launching”, 17).
A key attraction provided by the BBC at the 1949 trade fair was a massive television studio –– the biggest in the word, reportedly (Allister, 334) –– overlooked by a glass encased gallery where audiences could “watch rehearsals as well as transmitted performances” (“British Launching”, 17). Dubbed “television’s big shop window”, the BBC studio at Radiolymia hosted an enticing cavalcade of entertainment across the 12 days of the show with everything from fashion parades and cooking shows to dramatic teleplays, ice revues, and even a grand ballet (”The Scanner”, 21) . Inevitably, ‘variety shows’ formed a key element of the line-up with nightly tentpole specials scheduled for the all-important 8:00p.m. slot. These variety programmes showcased a range of acts drawn from across British and even European entertainment, including many performers who loomed large in Julie’s early career such as Pat Kirkwood, Richard Hearne, Peter Brough and Archie Andrews.
The biggest and best variety special was earmarked for the exhibition’s closing night on Saturday 8 October. Titled Radiolympia Showtime, it was all-out star-studded spectacular, hosted by popular radio personality, Wilfred Pickles, and featuring top talent names of the era such as wartime singing sweetheart, Vera Lynn, comedians Leslie Henson and Reg Varney, jazz trumpeter Kenny Baker, beloved music hall comic–– and Julie’s future stage 'Dad’––Stanley Holloway...and, making her solo TV debut, Britain’s ‘prima donna in pigtails’, Julie Andrews.*
Backed by the BBC orchestra under the direction of conductor, Eric Robinson, Julie sang two songs: her juvenile signature aria, the ‘Polonaise’ from Mignon and “I Heard a Robin Singing”, a number she had performed in the earlier Christmas panto, Humpty Dumpty at the London Casino. Given the embryonic status of TV at the time, there wasn't yet an established culture of TV reviews and most press coverage of the show, as of all the broadcasts from Radiolympia, focussed largely on technology and production aspects rather than broadcast content (Madden 1949). The Sketch called Radiolympia Showtime “a large scale spectacle on music hall lines” (Allister, 334), while the Daily Mail noted that “the baby of the show, Julie Andrews, treated audiences to some beautiful singing” (“Last Night”, 4).
It is not known if any record of Julie’s performance in Radiolympia Showtime exists. As a live emission, the broadcast wouldn’t have been recorded as a matter of course but, given its historical significance, it very well may have been filmed either “on set” or as a kinescope. The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. has a catalogue entry in its film holdings for Radiolympia Showtime (1949) which seems to feature "segments” from the show ––Kenny Baker is listed, for example –– but, whether or not, Julie’s performance is included is unclear. We can but live in hope...
Notes:
* While Radiolympia Showtime was certainly a major step up the career ladder for Julie and helped launch what would become a long association with television, it wasn’t in fact her very first appearance on the small screen. A year earlier, Julie performed on an another BBC variety special, Rooftop Rendezvous on 27 November 1948 (“Rooftop”, 27). For that performance, Julie was billed alongside parents, Ted and Barbara Andrews, so Showtime marked her solo TV debut.

Down the stretch they come! No, it’s not the Kentucky Derby — today, Kentuckians will vote for governor in their party primaries. Incumbent Gov. Matt Bevin will likely win renomination in the Republican contest despite being incredibly unpopular. But Democrats have a competitive three-way race between state House Minority Leader Rocky Adkins, state Attorney General Andy Beshear and former state auditor Adam Edelen. Beshear appears to be in the lead, but it’s unclear how big that lead really is and whether a Democrat can even still win a general election in a state that is now so deeply red.
Until Kentucky’s 2015 gubernatorial race, Democrats held most major statewide offices, and the GOP had won the governorship only once in the past 44 years. But Bevin won handily in 2015, and in 2016 Republicans captured the state house for the first time since the 1920s, giving them full control of state government.1 Thus, state politics now more closely align with Kentucky’s preferences in national races — the GOP presidential nominee has won Kentucky by at least 15 percentage points going back to 2000, and in 2016, President Trump won the state by 30 points.
All the same, Bevin (assuming he wins tonight) may still face a tough re-election fight next November. And that’s because he’s currently the most unpopular governor in the country, based on Morning Consult’s approval data for the first quarter of 2019.2 As you can see in the chart below, Bevin’s disapproval rating has been above 50 percent since the second quarter of 2018, which might have to do with his repeated run-ins with teachers, public sector unions and even his own party.
In April 2018, for example, Bevin vetoed legislation that raised taxes to expand public education spending only to have the Republican-controlled legislature override his veto while teachers rallied outside of the state capitol. He’s also made controversial comments, like when he said school closures allowing teachers to rally at the capitol may have caused children to be “sexually assaulted” or “physically harmed” because they couldn’t attend school.
Bevin’s approval numbers are even worse when you consider just how Republican-leaning Kentucky is. He had the worst approval rating of any governor relative to his state’s partisan lean,3 according to my colleague Nathaniel Rakich’s “Popularity Above Replacement Governor” rankings.

A Democratic governor with a net approval of +2 in an R+7 state has a PARG of +9 (2+7 = 9). If the same state had a Republican governor with the same approval rating, the PARG would be -5 (2-7= -5).
Shaded rows denote governors whose seats are up in 2019 or 2020, excluding those governors who are not seeking reelection.
* Partisan lean is the average difference between how a state votes and how the country votes overall, with 2016 presidential election results weighted at 50 percent, 2012 presidential election results weighted at 25 percent and results from elections for the state legislature weighted at 25 percent. The partisan leans here were calculated before the 2018 elections; we haven’t calculated FiveThirtyEight partisan leans that incorporate the midterm results yet.
Sources: Morning Consult, media reports
A big part of Bevin’s problem is that he’s struggling with his base. Morning Consult found in that poll that just 50 percent of Republicans approved of him while 37 percent disapproved. Compare that to the 86 percent of Kentucky Republicans who approved of Trump, and it’s understandable that Bevin is now trying to tie himself to the president, hoping to boost his numbers.
One bit of positive news for Bevin is that he avoided a high-profile primary challenge when U.S. Rep. James Comer — who Bevin beat by just 83 votes for the GOP nomination in 2015 — decided not to run. However, Bevin didn’t escape a primary challenger altogether. State Rep. Robert Goforth is running against him and even loaned his campaign $750,000 (as of early May, Bevin had raised a little over $1 million). But Goforth doesn’t seem to pose a serious risk to Bevin, at least not according to the scant polling we have: A survey from earlier in May from the GOP pollster Cygnal found Bevin leading Goforth 56 percent to 18 percent. Still, 32 percent of likely GOP primary voters said they had an unfavorable view of Bevin in that poll, so Goforth’s share of the primary vote on Tuesday could be an indicator of how strong or weak Bevin is among the Republican faithful.
But today’s main event is the Democratic race. The front-runner is Andy Beshear, the first-term attorney general and political scion whose father Steve preceded Bevin as governor. The younger Beshear squeaked out a narrow 0.2-point victory in 2015, with Bevin winning by 9 points at the top of the ballot. Since they took office, the two have been at loggerheads over many issues, including education, health care and pensions. These fights are one of Beshear’s main selling points in the Democratic primary, but Adam Edelen is running to Beshear’s left, hoping his support for abortion rights, decriminalizing marijuana and renewable energy will attract Democratic voters. And on Saturday, the state’s largest newspaper, the Courier-Journal, endorsed Edelen.
Edelen, the former state auditor, has also been on the offensive, attacking Beshear for his connection to a former aide who was convicted of bribery (however, there is no evidence Beshear knew about these activities). Edelen’s upstart campaign has also been aided by an influx of cash from his wealthy running mate, Gill Holland, and Better Future PAC, an outside group backing Edelen (primarily funded by Holland’s mother-in-law).
Meanwhile, state House Minority Leader Rocky Adkins is running to the right of Beshear and Edelen on social issues, claiming that his anti-abortion views and support for coal are more likely to appeal to the rural parts of the state where Democrats have been decimated in recent years.
Beshear currently seems to be ahead, but the only data we have are competing internal polls. Additionally, the two most recent surveys are from mid-April, so it’s hard to know if things have changed substantially in the past month. For what it’s worth, Edelen’s campaign found Beshear in first with 43 percent of the vote, Edelen in second with 23 percent and Adkins in third with 22 percent. Meanwhile, Beshear’s internal poll put him at 44 percent compared to 17 percent for Adkins and 16 percent for Edelen. So Beshear appears to be the polling front-runner, but a win by Edelen or Adkins shouldn’t be ruled out; internal polls are notoriously unreliable, the polling we do have is old and three-way races can be incredibly fluid.
Looking ahead to the general election in November, election handicappers view Kentucky as a toss-up or leaning in the GOP’s direction. Still, it’s possible a Democrat could take back the governor’s mansion. It’s early, but the pollster Mason-Dixon found Beshear up 48 percent to 40 percent in a Bevin-Beshear matchup in December. So if Bevin remains as unpopular as he is now, there could be an opening. Then again, the Bluegrass State’s politics are pretty darn red.

Those Ridiculous National Food Days Are Good for Small Business
As every American knows by now, the country celebrates National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, July 18.
Tamara Keefe, founder of St. Louis mini chain Clementine’s Naughty and Nice Ice Cream, is ready. “This is our busiest day of the year in terms of customers and sales,” she says. Keefe estimates that “on a very busy hot summer Saturday, we take out 1,000 or 1,100 people.” On National Ice Cream Day, that number rises to 1,500 to 2,000. “The turnover has almost doubled.”
It’s going to be tough for Keefe to beat last year’s performance. During the pandemic, she saw a notable surge in her only open store on National Ice Cream Day. “We had 2,500 people at this location. We made about $ 15,000 in sales that day. ”

Inaugurated by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 and celebrated on the third Sunday of July, National Ice Cream Day is one of the biggest food and beverage holidays that bombards people’s social media feeds and inboxes. The events are reminiscent of everything from baked ham with pineapple (April 16) to moldy cheese (October 9) to “Pizza with the works except anchovies” (November 12).
They are a powerful marketing tool – never as good as during the Covid-19 pandemic.
‘A big thing’
More of
Ben Van Leeuwen, founder of Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, says Ice Cream Day is “a big deal for us. We always see sales increases of 15 to 20%. ”He expects his company to see an increase of up to 20% this year, even if the viral Mac & Cheese ice cream cooperation with the Kraft Foods Group Inc. is not included. This Mac & Cheese Day (July 14th) creation sold out online in an hour.
At Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, based in Columbus, Ohio and with 59 stores across the country, founder Jeni Britton Bauer traditionally turned down National Ice Cream Day. “I’ve always thought it was low-hanging fruit – that it doesn’t pay that much, but it gives you something to talk about.” Still, their stores saw sales increase by around 15% in 2020 compared to an average summer Sunday .

A notable alliance of Food Days is NationalToday, com, which lists all types of holidays but pays special attention to food and drink. It categorizes more than 300 major culinary holidays and over 700 smaller ones. The platform was founded in 2017 by Ben Kaplan and is owned by TOP Worldwide, an Austin, Texas-based marketing company with offices in more than 20 countries.
One way to start a food vacation is the way ice cream did – through the government statement. You can also gain traction when you’re supported by a brand looking to promote a single product or passionate people who want their favorite snack to be in the spotlight for the time being. “Some have an unknown origin, but are now anchored in the mindset of consumers and are therefore celebrated,” says Kaplan.
A fee must cover the creation of a holiday if it has been approved. “It’s often thousands of dollars,” he adds. “Companies and brands can also choose whether they want our help with influencers, social media, digital content or PR campaigns for everything related to holidays.”
International Dark ‘n Stormy Day is one of the newer holidays on the National Today calendar. It all started in 2020 when June 9 was declared the official Rum-Ginger-Beer Highball Day. During the six-month preliminary negotiations with National Today, Gosling’s trademarked rum had to submit background material to prove its legitimacy. “We provided a copy of the Dark ‘n Stormy trademark certificate. It helped that June 9, 2020 was the brand’s 40th anniversary, ”said Malcolm Gosling Jr., whose family started the company.

In June 2020, Goslings ‘sales on the Drizly e-commerce platform increased 600% during the June week of Dark’ n Stormy Day promotions compared to the same week in 2019. (This shift is also due to the movement of the Online orders during the pandemic.)
Lifestyle vacation fatigue
However, such large sales spikes on National Food and Beverage Days can be temporary. When many restaurants were closed and people locked in their homes last year, a local ice cream cone gained even more prominence, especially for social media and hashtag purposes. Now that the venues are reopening, French Fry Day (July 13th) seems to be less of a priority.
This year, Goslings has seen a decline in interest around the national holiday. Although rum saw double-digit growth in the US this June, “we saw a more enthusiastic response from companies getting on the Dark ‘n Stormy Day promotional train in Europe,” says Brand Director Laura Baughman. “This could indicate an affinity for these lifestyle vacations among Europeans more than among Americans, who may experience a certain amount of fatigue on lifestyle vacations.” National Today’s Kaplan agrees, saying there is “a lot of interest in food tours in the UK, Italy, Australia and India.” He adds, “Consumer engagement on most holidays has doubled during the pandemic.”
In 2020, Casa Dragones benefited from the celebration of National Tequila Day on July 24th. According to founder Bertha Gonzalez, the tequila company’s sales increased by about 30% compared to the previous week. “National Tequila Day was particularly impressive for us last year,” she says. Casa Dragones hosted live Instagram classes with celebrities like Lily Aldridge, and the events garnered 447,000 impressions.
“We saw our online sales with Reservebar.com grow over 200% year over year,” said Gonzalez. She believes this year’s National Tequila Day will bring another spike in sales, but isn’t sure if it will keep up with last year’s. “I’m open to surprises,” says Gonzalez.
In the two weeks leading up to this year’s Gin & Tonic Day on April 9th, Fever-Tree, a supplier of mixers, saw sales jump 11% at Tonic Water. That’s a dramatic decrease from 2020, when the company saw a 300% increase in the seven days leading up to G&T day, according to Charles Gibb, chief executive officer of Fever-Tree North America.
Even products that may seem impenetrable to National Food Days often see a surge in sales. On last year’s National Junk Food Day (July 21), the soda category saw demand increase 12% compared to average daily sales for the remainder of the year, according to Pattern, a global e-commerce company. Its data suggests the jump could take place again this year; So far, the demand for soda is up 13% year over year.

Ice cream for breakfast day
Sometimes the less obvious days are the most powerful. Bauer from Jeni’s Ice Cream favors Ice Cream for Breakfast Day, which is celebrated on the first Saturday in February over the national holiday of July 18th. The rule-breaking vacation was started by a woman in Rochester, NY, in the 1960s to keep her children entertained during a snow storm. “We own Ice Cream for Breakfast Day,” says Bauer. On this day, Jeni’s shops open at 8 a.m. By noon, 100% of the profits will be donated to charities such as the social change site DoSomething.org. Jeni’s also usually uses the day to introduce a new flavor like Everything Bagel.
Keefe from Clementine’s is big on this vacation too. “It’s huge for us. Last year we partnered with Tiffany & Co. to mark the 60th anniversary of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. ”Their St. Louis stores were offering“ Breakfast at Clementine’s ”and giving Tiffany gift cards to customers dressed like Audrey Hepburn were. “It’s February, people are bored, they are queuing around the block,” says Bauer. “It’s more than silly, but it’s also powerful.”
Before it’s here, it’s at the Bloomberg Terminal.
