Road Trip
It was... It was always just a fight but the last one between Jason and Bruce had been one of their worst and things only escalated after he accused Jason of having something to do with the Joker's disappearance.
It was another thing to hold against him. Another excuse to keep the Red Hood at arms length but Barbara knows Jason wasn't anywhere near Gotham when the clown went missing. Bruce checked. Tim double checked, but she knows because it wasn't like Jason was even trying to hide from any of them.
He was just traveling.
At first it was with the rest of the Outlaws for a bit and on and off after for a while afterwards with the rest of his team joining up at different points along his trip across the country.
He'd spent weeks spent on the road from New York to Pennsylvania before anyone even noticed the Joker was gone, then took a detour down to Atlanta and through Kentucky. The weekend after that was spent traveling between Michigan and Toronto and a surprising sighting in Kansas which was one of the only stops she still didn't understand since he'd have to be traveling all night just to get to that small town he'd been spotted in and Jason didn't seem to be in any hurry.
A part of her had been tempted to call Kara and see if she'd look into the matter for her but cases kept piling up and they got busy. If it wasn't the usual villain of the day causing trouble then it was the power vacuum left behind by the still missing Joker or one the guys getting into trouble. So she left it alone.
Jason didn't seem like he was in any trouble. He'd come back sooner or later. He always came back. Except he didn't. Weeks turned into months, then a full year passed them by as sightings of the Red Hood grew less and less frequent and it was only a preemptive notification she sat up so long ago that reminded her of Jason's absence as she stares down at the computer monitor playing a few seconds of footage displaying a small crowd of people, the Outlaws, some of Young Justice and the Titans along with a few other people who were cheering him on as he slipped a ring on some red haired woman's finger. The context was clear enough but she didn't find out more about the what and why until later that night when Roy sent out an update to the rest of the Titans claiming dibs on being the best man.
The above is just something that I cobbled together after reading a few Jason leaves Gotham fics and the thought of Jazz killing the Joker for (insert reasons) so my mind kind of jumped to Jason living out his best Cinderella moment, chasing after, flirting (along with getting threatened by a pair of overprotective parents) and road tripping with his team while trying to find the woman who lost her bloody baseball bat. After they meet he's just doubling down on everything with the intent of marrying her, Jazz getting her own little road trip, telling Jason where they're going next or even making a game out of if he can find her at the next stop on the Fenton family supernatural hunting/cataloging road trip cause I know they love talking about ghost but the image of Jack and Maddie fighting Bigfoot is amazing.
And the Fentons are happy for the two of them. At least he wasn't another Johnny. They had Tucker check just to be sure while everyone else just kind of assumes the rest of the bat family already knew when it was actually a mix of (we're super busy right now) and (maybe things will be a little peaceful if we give Jason some space) leaving Bruce trying to play catch up and depending on if he's reformed having to outdo Vlad who is already paying for everything.

In Dickbabs defense:
I can try explaining most of the pictures here in really short, I hope:

First picture, Barbara is kinda right being mad. Second, Dick was being a bit arrogant and all in that comic. Third picture, I might be mistaken but wasn't her father in danger? Sure, she's not completely excused for kicking him of course, still, try to understand her. Fourth picture... What is wrong with that? That's basically training? Those aren't even real spikes. She's yelling because in A REAL situation like that he needs to be fast. Fifth picture, did you guys even read the AFTER of that one?
Like every relationship, especially at the start, it has their problems. Barbara is holding back because of her legs, because she's in a wheelchair. However, she asked him for some time, he said he's gonna give it to her.
Next picture:

Again, have you read the after?

She's not being serious, she IS mocking but not with actually mean intentions.
"Barbara is jealous and shows her disdain for Koriand'r" um, okay? As if Kory was never jealous of a girl and Dick?
"Barbara dated Bruce!" Another universe.
"Barbara married Tim!" Another universe.
"But Barbara and Jason!" But Jason and Kory?
"Barbara also slut shamed him!" I can't 100% defend her, but she didn't know what actually happened on the rooftop, did she? I think no one knows what happened to Dick that night, Barbara only knows that he and Tarantula kissed. Of course she wasn't happy.
As said, I can't completely defend her over that, however, you can't completely hate on her. Also, that's probably bad writing by Devin Grayson. Helena once kissed Dick in front of Barbara, she wasn't really happy about it but didn't lash out. Plus, if I'm not wrong... Kory slept with both Jason and Roy in the new 52. Yes, that's bad writing and people don't count that, so why do we count this? Please be coherent.
Barbara to Kate Kane: "War? Pfft. I've dated Dick Grayson. You dated Dick Grayson?" How...is that sentence a reason to hate on the ship? I think it is pretty complicated to date our boy. Always missing dates or running off in the middle of them, for good reasons, but you can't blame the girls for feeling bitter about it. And before someone says it never happened with Kory or stuff like that, I'd like to remind you that he and Kory dates when they're in the Teen Titans. A team. Where there's always someone to help out and you're not alone. In Blüdhaven, Dick was alone, he used to mention it quite a lot too.
"Barbara blamed him for getting shot and forgetting about her" Okay, again, can't 100% blame her, but I feel like that was the stress talking. She was worried about him, she tried to get him back, now that everything is over, the whole situation hit her HARD, aka, she's stressing. Which is something I believe they both do a lot. You know... Being vigilantes and all, can you blame them?
You can't base their relationship as a normal one, how it would work for us, because it's not that simple. They both have a stressing and complicated life.
Last note, a little plus.
I've seen people hating on Barbara for this:

Now, I'd like to ask you, have you ever met someone who can't read? I'm adding this bonus because I did know someone like that. And let me tell you: It wasn't easy. If you add the importance and stress of the situation the characters are in, it's even more understandable why Barbara got stressed and lashed out like that.
Overall, you can't tell me she doesn't care about Cass, because she does. Like she does with Dick.
Dick and Barbara have a complicated relationship, but a good built up. It has its flaws, but they care about each other. And I feel like Tom Taylor isn't "trying to brainwash us into believing their relationship is all good and rainbows", obviously I can't say he wrote them all that good. Still, their relationship developed. You know, it happens.
It is built on retcons? Yeah. Is DC built on retcons? Absolutely. Their relationship is NOT the only thing that gets affected by retcons. I do believe that DC trying to erase Dickkory is a bit shitty though.
But in the end, why are you guys so unhinged about a fictional relationship? And a fictional character (Barbara). Some people act like she's a real person who committed war crimes, what in the world did a fictional character do to you? People take this stuff too seriously.
I've seen Dickkory fans acting surprised if someone agrees about Dickkory being better than Dickbabs, as if when you open the comment on YouTube, TikTok, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr under a Dickbabs post you won't see the typical comments:
"Kory >>>> Barbara"
"Dickkory >>>> Dickbabs"
"I prefer Dickkory"
"I hate this ship"
"I hate Barbara"
"I prefer Dickkory but..."
To be honest, I always see more posts and comments against the Dickbabs or Barbara instead of ones against Dick and Kory.

Wonder Comics YJ Thoughts
My re-read of Wonder Comics YJ reminded me how much I've been meaning to play in that sandbox. I remember when it was coming out and how much people complained about it, and I was sad bc I thought it would be so EASY to fix those flaws with a lil' fanfic.
Which brings me to the fact that I wanna get back into writing fic. I've missed it. Why not start with this lil' era that caters to so many things I like anyway? I've got a buch of bunnies/concepts I wanna explore...
Kinda obsessed with Kon's storyline. I dig that he was trapped there, got fake-married, helped raise a baby for a while, and skipped out on the Crisis group memory-wipe as a result. I'm gonna go ahead and read some of his storylines that take place after the YJ series ended, bc I also love what all that whackness did do his relationship with the super-fam.
Amethyst on the team. I should be exploring this. Full stop. Gen, shipping, world-building.... I can go in so many directions with my fave princess and fave team actually being put together, and I should.
Tim's memory reboot a la Zatanna. This was really a cool idea. I like that the core four all have reason to remember their time with each other, even if OG YJ adventures have technically been erased from timeline. Kon was protected by the Gemworld. Bart by his speedster shenanigans. Tim got help from Z, and Cassie... well, I don't think we quite covered why Cassie remembers...
Which means I could do a story about what Cassie remembers and why. Probably involving some Greek god bs. Could be angsty. Could be fun.
That also begs the question of HOW MUCH DO OTHER FORMER MEMBERS REMEMBER? Cissie. Greta. Anita. Cissie shows up toward the end of Wonder Comics YJ, and there has to be some complexity there. I head about her being threatened to return to the cape by Amanda Whaler, and I've considered toying with it.
Then there's the new kids on the block. I admit I don't have a lot of ideas for Kid Lantern and Jinny Hex, but I've got a couple. And I really like the idea of incorporating Naomi into the team. I enjoyed S1 of her trade. I would probably stop there at growing the roster, tho. The big teamup at the end of the book with all the new young heroes was a bit... much.
How much do the Titans remember? The core four were pretty buddy-buddy with Starfire, Cyborg, Beast Boy, and Raven in their post-YJ Titan days. Do those relationships still hold water? Or not? Hmmm.

A Paltry "Defense" of RHATO (From someone who actually kind of hates RHATO) Part 2
Part 1 (Cheshire, Lian, and recognizing the basis of a reboot), Part 3 (A Generous Take on Intent vs Execution, and Koriand'r)
Disclaimer: I'm not kidding about not liking it yadda yadda yadda and, for further context re: this part in particular. Roy Harper is my second favorite character in the entire DCU, only surpassed by Black Canary herself, so I need you to understand how complicated this one is for me.
Before I really get into it I'd like to add a little bit of extra content that ties the last post to this one, namely this:

This is from This Fan Answers Interview.
I keep seeing posts about Why is "x/y/z hanging out with JASON, they're (Insert other bat but mostly Dick or Tim, tbh)'s friend." Do you guys bitch about this when Wally hangs out with & gets along better with Connor instead of Roy? Or, idk, Kyle's friendship with Roy and relationship with Donna, who is Roy's ex? What about the fact that Damian and Rose struck up a friendship bcs of their similar-ish pasts? The fact that Conner was Tim's friend ("friend"?) first before dating Cass? When Tim was part of the Titans which had membership overlaps with Dick's Titans? When DAMIAN was on the Titans which had membership overlaps with the previous two's teams (barring weird age-fuckery)?
DC is an interconnected universe with all kinds of characters with all kinds of different storylines meeting and hanging out and fighting together esp when there's an overlap of interests/work. The "cape" community is fundamentally the same thing as a hobby club, except the hobby is fighting crime (and/or evil which sometimes aren't the same thing). So it's not even weird for people who are friends of a friend or friend of a sibling/ect. to just kind of meet up randomly and organically form their own relationship. Separate from the other people that they know. This is also normal in real life. Seriously do you know how many people I know who are/did date/marry their sibling's best friend? or just generally became better friends with them than the sibling who originally knew them?? or the fact that it's a popular romance trope? Or how many (okay only like, two that I knew personally-ish) people dated and married their sibling's ex-fiancee??? ALSO A NOT TERRIBLY UNCOMMON ROMANCE TROPE? NOT TO MENTION THE PEOPLE WHO ARE STILL FRIENDS WITH THEIR EX-FIANCE/SPOUSE'S FAMILIES?
Just because people are known for having a specific connection to one character, doesn't mean they can't, or shouldn't, have connections with others. Or, that the connections they do or don't have can change. Y'all're just assholes who are mad someone doesn't play dolls the way you want them to. Grow up. Additionally, this should also apply to Cheshire. She shouldn't always be restricted to Roy & Lian, either. As a child, it's understandable that Lian's everything was largely tied to her parents, but even pre-Rebirth she had her own relationships with, say, Mia or Rose or Dinah. YES those are relationships are somewhat because of Roy, but they're still their own thing.
Now, before I get too into this I want to state that inasfar as RHATO is concerned, Lobdell is not the sole writer throughout its run, and when it comes to analyzing the characters' personalities (as this post is going to focus on Roy), I'm going to analyze them separately. Lobdell's Outlaws are different from Tynion's Outlaws are different from Pfeiffer's brief run with the Outlaws. And I'm going to focus mostly on Lobdell, because he's the one everyone always gets mad about, but Tynion holds enough blame (and my ire) to get a decent chunk of attention as well.
Without further ado,
FBAT (Frequently Bitched About Topics):
I'd like to start this particular topic (Roy) off with something I see a lot and that, after reading, I've discovered is so very patently false that I made a meme about it too:
"It's Jason's fault Roy relapsed. RHATO/Lobdell are the reason for the trope of Jason "fixing" Roy's addiction. Roy is just there for Jason to look better by saving him from it."
This one is actually a little fascinating to me. Like, where does this idea come from? The earliest ao3 jayroy fic that involves anything along these lines debuted a month before RHATO came out. A month before the sneak preview even came out, actually. I could not find any platonic fics that predated that either, but the point stands that clearly, we don't need canon content to derive this trope. Yes, we knew at least a bit of Lobdell's opinions on Roy as a recovering addict, even before then, but they're not the kind that really springs to mind "he needs someone to save him," you know? And, frankly, Lobdell doesn't seem to see it that way either.
Throughout RHATOv1 and, later, Red Hood/Arsenal, Lobdell seems to view Roy's sobriety as almost sacrosanct. At no point in these issues when Jason and Roy share any screentime does Roy EVER relapse, which is particularly interesting, because there's another title that exists in the time somewhat parallel(?)* with the end of RH/A called Titan's Hunt. And, well...
Roy fails his sobriety right in the first issue of Titans Hunt and spends a majority of it drunk, or with other members of the Titans forcing him to remain sober. *I'm a little unclear on when exactly it happens. RH/A started release in August 2015 & Titans Hunt in December of that same year. There's not exactly a lot of space to fit it in, but it's also referenced in RH/A #11...
Counter to this in the second issue of RH/A:
"Rockabilly genius" is Lobdell's... idk, tagline for Roy in RH/A. He does the same thing with Starfire in RHATO by emphasizing her as an "alien former-slave princess" and "living nuclear reactor." Is it stupid? Yes. I hate it so fucking much guys you have no idea.
Now, other than that one reference to it, it otherwise makes the most sense to have it happen like... after RH/A since it pretty much leads directly into Titans: Rebirth and then Titans (2016), the reformation of the OG-ish Titans team, but y'know whatever. Comics, man.
The funniest part about this is RHATOv1 has not one but TWO addiction plotlines, that run CONCURRENTLY, but neither of them are Roy. Actually, Roy's mostly down for the count or working out his issues with Ollie for the bulk of it. Instead, Starfire and Jason have their own issues going on. Personally, I think Jason's was slightly more realistic of the two, and had some juicy potential considering that Bruce once had a Venom addiction storyline, but that was dropped soooo fast after it was picked up.
Also? While it could be argued that Jason leaving him potentially prompted his downward spiral in Hunt... It's really interesting to me that the last "relapse" we see from Roy prior to HiC... wasn't actually a relapse at all.
Titans (2016) #20
Cheshire is well known for using toxins on her nails to poison people, it looks like this time she decided to use the drug that Brain and Monsieur Mallah were using to extend Brain's power and control. She was, after all, hired by them. So, while I personally wouldn't quite say "It's Cheshire's fault Roy relapsed," there is... significantly stronger evidence to suggest that one, yeah.
Anyways this leads into Wally and Dick absolutely dismissing Roy as facing any real threat and deciding he's just suffering paranoid delusions associated with having a relapse and when you contrast it to Jason's absolute faith in Roy's ability to be honest with him and desire to not come off judgemental even when asking about Roy's sobriety it is SO fucked up. Everyone who insists that they're "better" friends for Roy owes me fucking money for this bullshit. I'm soooo close to just writing up a whole post dedicated to how much Roy gets fucked over by the Titans despite giving them his all - and yeah he fucks up too, I'll be honest. I'm also not going to pretend Jason's perfect on that front either, but there's definitely significantly less material to say he's a shitty friend than between all them.
ANYWAYS long story short: There is, quite literally, zero basis for this. If anything, Roy'd be the one helping the other two. but Lobdell doesn't do that, either.
Okay, so obviously I had a few complaints with this one.
But it's worth noting to me that he dedicates in the middle there an ENTIRE PARAGRAPH of his answer to Roy's sobriety. And this isn't the only time he does that. He also references AA a lot. Look, I personally don't care whether or not Lobdell was in AA or NA or anything to that effect, but it's really clear to me that either he was, someone close to him was, or he does some kind of volunteering in that area. And above everything else about Roy, this is very distinctly the most important part to him, and as such the way he handles it is from a perspective that most people don't view addicts from.
The MOST important thing, I think, is that he does not view addicts as people who can be "saved" by someone swooping in and telling them to. Whether it's Roy choosing every moment of every day to stay on his course, or Jason choosing to give up Venom because he doesn't need it when he's got friends, or Kori giving up on the space drugs because.... I'll be honest I still don't understand (I know in a literal sense but I don't think his framing worked) why she was on space drugs in the first place so I can't even begin to imagine her motivation to stop bcs it's not like it happened right after she nearly killed Roy bcs of them, which would at least make some sense. Anyways, he acknowledges this as a choice the addict themselves has to make first, but that it's easier to follow through when you have support.
... Moving on from things that aren't true, let's discuss what Roy's characterization in RHATO actually is...
"RHATO made Roy an idiot."
Okay, sorry, I partly lied. We're breaking this one down because it's kind of the "Yes but no but yes but no" of the issues people have with RHATO's Roy. And here's where I start breaking it down by writer.
First up, Lobdell (0-19, Annual #2, 32-40):
Lobdell's Roy wants you to think he's an idiot. He's quite literally the embodiment of this post over here. I don't think he actually likes being the idiot, but I think he considers it a safe place where he doesn't have to worry about it if he fucks up.
Teen Titans (2011) #16, which was also being written by Lobdell
The really shining moments, I think, for Lobdell's Roy are RHATO #16 & #37. The first one of those is set during the Death of the Family storyline which ugh but this is the issue that I was very much "Oh, yeah, I think he's got Roy there."
In this particular storyline Jason's captured by Joker and Roy was bugging his phone to route audio of any important sounding calls to the ship so Roy could paranoidly keep an eye on him. Stalking as a love language is something only a Bat could appreciate, as even Kori mentions thinking it's a little weird. So they fly out to Gotham to try and help out and run into the Teen Titans, who are leader-less because Tim is also captured, though Wonder Girl is doing a pretty good job herself (as she should be) but they're still overwhelmed until Kori and Roy step in to help.
From here this pretty much leads into a whole thing where Roy is doubting his capacity to lead, because canonically for this timeline he's never done so and has a low opinion of himself, while actually managing to pull off a semi-mentorship kind of role flawlessly. Now, it's a bit cheesy because it's all condensed into a single issue, but it very much does feel like callbacks to Roy's self-image issues from previous comic runs.
#37 is pretty much all about his relationship with Ollie I would say that this is not entirely out of character for him. At this point in Canon the two of them have not patched anything up, but Roy standing up for himself in this does feel reminiscent of, y'know. Roy punching Ollie in "They Say it'll Kill Me... But They Won't Say When."
(I'd also like to note that RHATO #37 feels very much like Lobdell was bitter that HE didn't get to write Roy & Ollie's relationship dynamic, so he... write it again, and pretty much retcons a bunch of Tynion's iteration, & in the process he really made it look like Roy was Ollie's sugar baby. lol.)
Anyways, while those two issues do have a lot of focus/flashbacks on Roy's backstory, which is completely different from pre-52 canon, I think it shows him having a much better grasp of Roy's... emotional core, I think, than the other two writers on RHATO. There's a really good post here about Roy being techy even prior to 52, but I do want to tack on the caveat that "Roybots" was not a Lobdell invention, and you pretty much won't see anything similar to that outside of Pfeiffer's 3-issue run on RHATO. Lobdell largely sticks to Roy with implausible gimmick arrows and playing mechanic for spaceships.
That's right, bro has a body disposal arrow. (RHATO#16 for Analysis Arrow, RH/A #9 for "gun arrow" which I couldn't resist including bcs its so dumb, RHATO#35 for the "Evidence annihalator")
Now otherwise I would say Lobdell's Roy does suffer from a lack of impulse control (barring his staunch control of his addiction) which is far more apparent in RH/A (insert "She was 90% of my impulse control meme" abt Kori), which can make him seem dumb, and he has a little bit of bro-y immaturity. Yes, Jason calls him an idiot sometimes, but idk, feels a little more like how you might say "my friends are idiots, but they're my idiots." Also it's not like Dick and the other Titans never did that either, not uncommonly because Roy was being a little silly guy.
Outsiders #11
Note that Roy does tend to talk down about himself even in this pre-52 scene, too. He DOES also stand up for himself and his abilities from time to time, but he can go either way depending on the situation.
Anyways tl;dr of everyone writing RHATO I think Lobdell actually understands Roy the best. He's immature, mouthy, and self-depreciating, but he's also capable, a highly-intelligent mechanics kinda guy, with latent leadership qualities and decent tactics laying just below the surface of his self-doubt. You could sell me on this being a younger version of Roy Harper who never had a kid pretty easily. Execution's just a little clumsy and the vagueness of the ages under the condensed timeline or, worse, the re-corrected(???) timeline after Convergence/Rebirth/ect do NOT help. Note: This is NOT an endorsement of RH/A's Roy characterization though. Lobdell how the fuck did you go so far backwards with that one.
Tynion (Annual 1, 20-28)
Sigh.
Tynion's Roy is... 90% self doubt, and the rest is love for his friends. He is big of heart and dumb of ass. He is THE most emotionally driven person throughout this entire arc and does some stupid shit in the name of friendship and love that almost screws them all over but then his deep abiding love for his friends sways the heart of one of his enemies who desperately wishes someone cared for HER that much (see the Cheshire portion of the previous post) and she switches sides in honor of it.
It feels a little bit like Tynion needed one person to be "the girl" who thinks with their heart and not their head but didn't want to be a stereotype and make it Kori, so Roy got the job instead. (Meanwhile Kori got the logic-brained role. Yeah.)
I think the only real part of this arc that I kind of enjoyed was this sequence over here. Like yeah, that's Roy. Roy might have his own issues, but they're nothing to him when it comes to needing to step up and help a friend. UGH and I'm too afraid to read n52's Green Arrow but I hate his naked face and the shitty personality Tynion gives him. He is SUCH an asshole. And yeah in that sequence that's just a manifestation of his self doubt wearing Ollie's face, but he's... not really better when he shows up in person. I'll be honest, I don't like Lobdell's Ollie either, and he's also kind of an asshole, but he is NOT on the level that Tynion writes him. At least #37 ends on halfway decent terms and actually FEELS like they're on the path to patching up their relationship.
Anyways yeah also for some reason Hugo Strange is Roy's therapist. There was probably some ongoing plot about that but I can't stand that whole whatever it is so I'm not going to examine that one right now. Maybe if someone starts paying me for these posts.
I kid, I'll get more into that when I discuss the Amnesia arc in entirety.
Pfeifer (29-31)
Okay so first off, Pfeifer's characterization is almost(?) not bad actually. It carries over some of the better parts of Tynion and Lobdell. He does however still have the issue of making Kori too much of a bitch, and he's the one who decided to take the "Roy is a tinkerer" to its logical extreme and create the whole concept of the Roybots, which are nanobots. And really this whole plot is just a wank-fest for nerdery.
This is straight up just some refined points of the other two and then yknow, the "haha nerds rule" vibes. They were making fun of him for his weird AI bomb and then his AI infected the nanobots and he saved the world AND his friends. yaaaay.
Wow. (Seriously was that "summary" to pat yourself on the back really necessary?)
Um you know I think that's all I've got off the top of my head, because actually the complaints that were SENT to me weren't really about him but I'm starting off with some more broad analysis on the characters to give myself a foundation to address some of the more specific complaints going forward. Next I'll do Kori, then Jason, and then we'll move into more specific topics. If there's anything specific in here you'd like me to address or argue re: Roy, feel free to reply here or send it to my inbox and I'll see what I can do. I definitely feel like I glossed over something, but my goal here is to open up more of a discussion in general.
If you want more RHATO analysis particularly based on common complaints that you would like to see either challenged or supported with extensive degrees of evidence so you can feel that sense of superiority that comic fans are all a little obsessed over without having to actually read the damn thing yourself, you can send me the specific topics in the replies Here or to my inbox.
EDIT: I had previously incorrectly labelled the issue with Roy & Ollie as #32, it's #37.
#dc#roy harper#rhato#Mashing Meta Bones with Axel#Fun facts I actually redid this whole post multiple times with completely different angles#so I actually have a lot more analysis material but I think I like how this one came out best?#but absolutely ask me more#dc meta#I did run out of steam though. Grayden's Struggle (Part 3): The Awakening of Atlas
If you didn't read part 2 or one links here for part 2 and that has a link to part 1:
Herc pulled out a book. Something most of the team never saw Herc with. The book was a book of Gods from various mythologies and pantheons. Herc turned the book to a page that said “ATLAS”. Grayden knew a little bit about Greek Mythology. Atlas was a titan who was condemned to hold up the sky, he was known for Endurance. As Grayden looked at the pictures in Herc’s book there was no mistaking it, Atlas was the man he had seen.

“But why?” Grayden asked.
“Why is Atlas communicating with me?”
“Bro, Atlas is one of the Golden Gods of the team. The last Atlas couldn’t handle his power. I think he has chosen you because you personify endurance. You endure so much, Grayden.” Herc said, putting his hand on Grayden’s shoulder.
“But what is going to happen? Is he going to possess me or something? Am I going to lose myself to this endurance God?” Grayden questioned, his head just more confused.
“I can’t answer that bro, for now take the rest of the day off and go get some rest.” Herc commanded, a sense of compassion coming from his voice.
Grayden returned home, it was already starting to get dark. He ate dinner, finished his nightly routine, and then sat at the edge of his bed thinking. His mind started to race about everything he had to do for the team and about Atlas. He had to talk to 001 about the overall roster; speak to Herc and Brody about the roster for the next match; have a meeting with Trevor, the head waterboy; speak to Hans, one of the team’s rising stars, about a discovery; and that was even before considering all the mascots he had to prepare for the next match and drones he had to help monitor.

Negative thoughts of others started to fill his mind, things he wouldn’t share. He always had to be the caring, kind, supportive one. He couldn’t start letting negativity fill his mind. But words like lazy, procrastinators, unmotivated, mood killers, pests started to fill his mind. Did he really think of his fellow bros that he loved like that? No, he couldn’t. He grabbed his phone and sent a message to Brody. The captain was always there for Grayden when he had a bad day. Brody was someone who Grayden could just talk to and it would instantly brighten his mood. But Grayden looked at the tag line, last online 11:35 PM under Brody’s name. Looking at the clock it was already 2 AM somehow. Did he stay up this late just thinking about all these things? He knew Brody was asleep by now.
Tears started to stream down Grayden’s face. He thought, “Do any of them understand how difficult it is to do so much to keep this team going?”
Grayden’s mind thought of the time he had to plan catering for the team’s holiday party all by himself. Everyone else was busy. He didn’t mind helping out, or so he thought. All these little tasks just kept piling up. Do this, do that, help with this, oh someone is gone I can do that. The weight was getting to Grayden. Some days he felt like he was the Captain and Coach with everything he had to do.
He looked at the team’s group chat. No one was online, not surprising for this hour. He plugged his phone in to charge and laid in bed. He just decided it was best to get some sleep. He didn’t want to be late to his morning meetings. After taking some high dose melatonin, Grayden could feel the sleep coming. But he wasn’t ready for what his dreams were about.

Atlas appeared before Grayden in a blank room. Was this Atlas in his subconscious?
“I know who you are, Atlas. Why are you here?” Grayden interrogated. He was not sure he wanted the Golden God to mess with him. His reservations and walls were high, could he trust Atlas?
“Grayden, you are correct. For, I am Atlas. The Titan of Endurance. I am one of your Team’s Golden Gods.” Atlas replied, in a deep commanding voice.
Grayden looked and noticed a tattoo that said Golden Army on Atlas’s arm. Maybe he was a God or guardian of the team.
“This golden sphere I have symbolizes something, Grayden. Do you know what it is?” Atlas asked, his tone getting a little softer.
“Could it be the heavens?” Grayden answered, unsure.
“You do not carry the heavens, Grayden. Think, what weight do you carry?” Atlas responded.
“The team? I have been thinking I’ve been carrying the team.” Grayden replied, his words filled with a little bit of bitterness and pain.
“If you let me in Grayden, I will help you find balance. We will endure for the team. I will help you realize this isn’t only your weight to carry.” Atlas stated.
Grayden hesitated. As he did, Atlas’s muscles grew and his body from the neck down became golden. He was becoming a true Golden God. Grayden watched as Atlas squatted down. The golden sphere was still behind him.

Grayden watched as Atlas began to lift the golden sphere with perfect form. Bearing the weight with his whole body, Atlas was holding the massive sphere that said Golden Army.
“So you can carry something that heavy?” Grayden asked.
“Easily. If I can hold up the heavens I can hold up the weight of your team. But I think you must realize you can share that weight. For you are not alone like I was, Grayden.”
Grayden felt himself go blank for a moment and when he returned to seeing Atlas, the Godly titan had not only shrunken the sphere but was supporting it only with one hand and his shoulder.

Grayden also noticed Atlas had piercing gold eyes and was now wearing a draped toga. Was he trying to show that through balance and teamwork, he could accomplish anything? Grayden wasn’t sure. His mind still had doubts, but he realized something. He needed Atlas’s strength and guidance.
“Atlas, are you asking to share my body? For me to become your vessel?” Grayden asked, still unsure of Atlas’s full intention.

The Golden Titan looked at Grayden, before replying…
“Yes, I want to help you achieve balance. I know your desires. You want to excel as a mascot, hockey player, and American football player for the team. You want to help make sure the team can succeed. That all comes from a place of great compassion and perseverance.” Atlas acknowledged.
“So will it be your influence or you taking over?” Grayden replied, unsure of the process.
“That Grayden, is up to you. You know from the other presence inside you, the drone, that your will is stronger than most. I am powerful, at the levels of a God. However, I will not forcefully take over unless you enter a state of true distress. I am here to help you succeed. Call on me when you need me. I will help you endure and find balance. For you would be my vessel.” Atlas responded, compassion coming through.
“I accept.” Grayden said.
“You will need to show my power to the other Gods, Grayden. I am not like your drone persona, I will aid you but I will take full control for a limited time when you call upon me. I will not harm us, but you must trust me to find us and your team balance.”
“I understand, Atlas.” Grayden replied.
With that Atlas disappeared. Grayden’s dream faded to black.
But that word, balance, stuck in Grayden’s mind.

Dick Grayson reading in Rebirth and forward
In the last few years, there have been several comics where Nightwing is guest starring that I haven't picked up, so maybe I have missed some smashing comics in here; just saying. As usual, take this list for what it's worth – my personal interpretations and reflections. (Please note that there is a difference between cover date and when a book is actually published, and I might have mixed these dates in the list. I mostly use them to help my own thought process.)
I gather DC lets their creators play in any sandbox/Earth/continuity they want, which means it's a fool's errand to try to understand what, if any, stories from Dick's past are supposed to have happened in the current continuity. But I never claimed to be quite sane, did I...? Here is me, trying to piece together stories chronologically story-wise:
Nightwing vol 4 # 82. Flashbacks to pre-Dick John and Mary Grayson.
Batman vol 3 # 54. Has some flashbacks from when Dick was new in Wayne Manor. He has nightmares, climbs a chandelier, questions why Bruce took him in, and apparently doesn't know Bruce is Batman: nothing special but a few nice pages.
The Precedent. In Detective Comics # 1000 (2019). Bruce's hesitation before he lets Dick become Robin. Unclear if it's supposed to be in the current continuity.
Robin and Batman # 1–3 (2021-2022). A three-issue story that takes place in the days around Dick's twelfth birthday. It's about how Dick eventually chooses not to be "the dark" like Batman, but something better – the light, Robin. Not in the main continuity, but another version of how Dick became Robin (also a first meeting with the other original Teen Titans - in this version, they already had suits and code names when Dick first became Robin).

Batman: Urban Legends # 23
Hot pursuit. In Batman: Urban Legends # 23 (March 2023). Cute short story; Robin drives the Batmobile for the first time (his second year as Robin).
Batman One bad day: Mr Freeze. (2022) Probably not set in the main continuity, Robin is small and wears a winter suit.
Batman/Superman: World's Finest vol 1 (2022). One of my favourite books from the current era (written by Mark Waid). It has a different tone than other in-continuity books (in a good way), but it is connected; the first story arc is a prequel to Batman vs Robin and the Lazarus Planet event. Dick has been Robin for a few years in the book except for a few panels. My favourite issue is # 6, when Dick is lost in the past, works in a circus and solves a mystery.
Batman/Superman (2019) # 16–21 and Annual 2021 # 1 is an outstanding story with DickRobin, albeit not the main Earth version.
Nightwing vol 4 # 78. There are a few pages of flashbacks, what might be Dick and Barbara's first meeting, fighting bullies at school. The bully, Shelton Lyle, will later turn out to be the villain Heartless – Nightwing fighting him is a story that keeps getting set on hold.
Batgirl vol 5 # 14–17 (October 2017– January 2018). Guest starring Nightwing, including flashbacks to when he was Robin and Dick and Barbara were in High School. Nothing special.
World's Finest: Teen Titans (2023). New book about the Teen Titans (the original five plus Bumblebee) when they're starting, also written by Mark Waid. One issue has been published so far; Robin is struggling with combining Batman's distrust with leading the team.
Nightwing vol 4 # 92. Another couple of flashback pages, from Dick's time as Robin, when he took on more than he could chew and got hurt saving a guy's life. Alfred refuses to let Bruce into Dick's bedroom unless he removes the cowl "and leave your disapproval at the door".
"A little nudge". In Robin 80th Anniversary Special (2020). It's probably not the latest official story about how Dick left Robin to become Nightwing, but I wouldn't mind if it were. Dick leaves Robin by his own choice; Bruce is a bit of a jerk because he's not emotionally mature enough to say, "I know you've grown up and should move on; I'll be fine without you."
Nightwing vol 4 # 79. Flashback page of Dick leaving the Manor, saying, "He fired me, Alfred" (he's eighteen at the time). So evidently, Tom Taylor goes with that version in his writing.

Nightwing vol 4 # 39
Nightwing vol 4 # 39. Flashback to when Dick was a student in Blüdhaven, after leaving Robin and before he became Nightwing. He goes out to look for a murderer dressed in old workout clothes that looks a lot like his original Nightwing suit. Part of the best story arc of Nightwing vol 4, so don't miss it!
Red Hood and the Outlaws vol 2 Annual # 1. A team-up issue with Nightwing with a flashback to when Jason saw the Flying Graysons. And to their first meeting at Wayne Manor, which didn't go well because Alfred decided to give newcomer Jason Dick's bedroom because the Manor evidently suffers from a shortage of beds... <insert rolling eyes emoji here> Eminently skippable issue...

Nightwing Annual 2021
Nightwing Annual 2021 (2022). Part of the book is a flashback story. Dick, who lives at the Titans tower, talks about how Bruce fired him and got a replacement. But when Alfred asks him to visit (calling Bruce his father), he comes to see Jason, who complains about how it's impossible to live up to the standard Dick set as Robin. They take the Batmobile (with Alfred's blessing) and head out. It seems to be their first meeting, which makes RHATO vol Annual 2 # 1 obsolete.
Nightwing vol 4 # 89. A team-up with Jon Kent/Superman, starting with a few pages flashback to their first meeting when Jon was getting his powers. Dick is wearing his red New 52 Nightwing suit.
Titans (2016–2019). I think the series was pretty meh, though Annual # 1 and Special # 1 have badass Nightwing moments.
DC Rebirth Holiday Special (2016) # 1, has a nice Titans story but nothing of further importance.
Rebirth Nightwing # 1. Dick returns to being Nightwing after the Grayson run, all set to pretend to work for the Parliament of Owls (see Robin War, part of New 52).
Nightwing vol 4 # 1 (September 2017) – # 4. Better than Batman. Nightwing is working undercover with the Parliament, partnered with the new character Raptor who, it turns out, loved his mum and has a personal vendetta with Bruce Wayne because he took Dick from his roots.
Monster men. A storyline with the villain Professor Hugo Strange in Nightwing # 5-6, Batman # 7-8, Detective Comics # 941–942 (and some more books I haven't read). Dick is temporarily transformed into a monster and later saves the day by jumping into a monster to administer some antitherapy. Nothing of future importance but some nice panels regarding how well Dick knows Bruce.
Nightwing vol 4 # 7–8 (January 2017). Rise of Raptor. Nightwing discovers that Raptor has been stalking Dick Grayson since childhood. Raptor abducts Bruce Wayne and puts him in a death trap, but Nightwing saves him when he jumps. I quite enjoy the Raptor stories, I have to say.
Nightwing vol 4 # 9 (January 2017). A team-up with Superman, who was not a guy he knew at the time since this Superman had come from the pre-Flashpoint universe and somehow merged with New 52 Superman (no, I still don't understand it). It mostly takes place in Dick's dreams. Known for a quote from Superman: "Of everyone I've met here, you're the least changed from the version I knew. Always confident, always kind, always cool. Dick Grayson – the multiversal constant."
Nightwing vol 4 # 10 (February 2017) – 14 (April 2017). Dick moves to Blüdhaven (I think people got their memories or stolen time back at some time in Rebirth, which would explain how he was new in the city here, but had lived and been a cop there (as in Nightwing vol 2) later in vol 4.) He volunteers for a program for teens at a community centre, where he meets Shawn Tsang/Defacer, an "art terrorist" Batman and Robin once fought back in the day. Nightwing works to prove she and Gorilla Grim aren't murderers.
Batman vol 3 # 16 (April 2017) Has a fun couple of pages with Bruce and Dick, Jason, Damian and Duke at Bat Burger; Bruce warns the boys to stay out of Gotham and out of Bane's way, which Dick, Jason and Damian, of course, disregard. The issue ends with Batman finding them hanging by their necks in the Batcave. In # 17, we see they survived, and Bruce has left them frozen with Superman at the Fortress of Solitude for safekeeping.
Nightwing vol 4 # 15 (April 2017). Dick and Shawn Tsang/Defacer start dating. Interlude with many guest stars whom Dick talks to about his new life in Blüdhaven.

Nightwing vol 4 # 20
Nightwing vol 4 # 16 – 20 (July 2017). Nightwing Must Die. Nice if you want to see Dick and Damian together again. Shawn is abducted while having a pregnancy scare, and Damian follows Dick to save her. (He went to Blüdhaven because he was upset people counted on Dick to become the Batman after Bruce's retirement, but later confesses he was unsure what his place in Dick's life was now.) Dick is cut with a knife made from the nth metal and see visions of himself from different realities. Villains: Professor Pyg and Doctor Simon Hurt, both from Dick and Damian's time as Batman and Robin.
Nightwing vol 4 # 21 (July 2017). Nightwing and Flash (Wally West) hang out, fights criminals and save each other's lives.
Nightwing vol 4 # 22–25 (August – September 2017). Blockbuster, the villain whose death in Nightwing vol 2 was a huge deal, is suddenly alive and menacing Blüdhaven and Nightwing again. Dick is job-hunting and ends up taking a job as a blackjack dealer to keep an eye on Blockbuster, who had earlier sold him out to Tiger Shark, a villain Dick fought as Batman in Black Mirror. # 24–25 has a pretty badass fight, Nightwing vs a boatload of villains, and he also saves everyone by hotwiring a contraption to expand a bubble that freezes time. Shawn breaks up with Dick.
Nightwing vol 4 # 26–28 (October – November 2017). Spyral. Huntress/Helena Bertinelli, whom Dick met during the Grayson run (New 52 era), turns up. They work together on a case, ending up at the Spiral headquarter, and start a relationship.
Batman vol 3 # 33–35 (December 2017 – January 2018). At Wayne Manor, Alfred tells Dick, Jason, Damian and Duke that Bruce intends to marry Selina while the latter two are on some mission in Khadym. Damian is upset because his mother is in Khadym, and Dick accompanies him there in the following issues. Some nice moments here and there, but I've never cared for Tom King's (the writer) grand Batman arc.
Dark Nights: Metal. Storyline 2017–2018. (including Nightwing # 29) where Batman discovers a Dark Multiverse.
Nightwing vol 4 # 30 – 34 (February 2018). Raptor's Revenge. Raptor gets involved in Nightwing’s fight with Blockbuster. Helena/Huntress breaks up with Dick. # 32 has flashback to Dick and Raptor at the circus and the death of his parents.
Batman vol 3 # 45–47 (June - July 2018). Booster Gold goes back in time to save Bruce's parents as a wedding gift. This completely alters the past, and for some reason, Dick becomes a Batman who fights a city of Jokers with lethal violence. Some amusing wackiness about what has happened to different characters – Selina is a serial killer, Tim has a menial job, and Jason has invented tires that give tire thieves a deadly shock of electricity, but nothing of future importance.

Nightwing vs Hush
Batman: Prelude to the Wedding. Nightwing vs Hush (2018) is a great issue for a Nightwing fan. Nightwing and Superman are taking Batman for a bachelor’s party, but Hush attacks them and he and Dick are transported to another universe (where Hush perishes, which hasn’t stopped him from turning up back in the main universe). Robin vs Ra's al Ghul has a tiny Nightwing as Damian's "good angel" on his shoulder, which is a fun but minor detail.
Batgirl vol 5 # 25. Takes place just after the failed wedding between Bruce and Selina. Barbara needs a friend; Dick takes her to the empty honeymoon suit. They talk as close friends about love, and Dick comes across as quite the romantic. Quite a nice story, in my opinion.

Nightwing vol 4 # 35
Nightwing vol 4 # 35–41 (February – May 2018)The Untouchable. My favourite arc of vol 4 so far, written by Sam Humphries (I'm sure he was supposed to stay longer because he talked in an interview about wanting to bring back Dick's Uncle George from Batman vol 1 # 22, but he only wrote the one arc). Includes some flashbacks to Dick’s time as Robin, and when he was a student post-Robin. He starts a new business, Grayson cross train studio.
Nightwing vol 4 # 42 (June 2018). Enjoyable one-shot. Damian tells his pets about how Dick saved him from capture in Tokyo. They pick up a dragon on the way.
Nightwing vol 4 # 43 (June 2018). Another enjoyable one-shot, with Dick, Damian and Roy Harper/Arsenal, bickering and fighting bad guys.
Nightwing vol 4 # 44–47 (July – October 2018). The Bleeding Edge, a story arc with malevolent virtual reality and the "dark web". Feel free to skip it.
Nightwing/Magilla Gorilla Special # 1 (October 2018). As a crossover with a Hanna-Barbera character, presumably not set in the usual DC universe... But I rather enjoyed it; it was a nice little murder mystery and lots of thinking about the circus and Dick's parents. Though I wouldn't personally rush to the cinema for a movie about The Flying Graysons with gorillas as actors...
Nightwing vol 4 # 48–49 (November 2018). Harm's way, the conclusion of the Dark Web storyline. If you enjoy Nightwing on a motorbike and being a badass fighter, why not? I can't say the story made an impact or had consequences since Dick would spend the following two years (maybe half a year, in-universe) as Ric.
The Murder Club (in Batman: Urban Legends # 19–23, November 2022 – March 2023 ). Martha and Thomas Wayne turn up in the Batcave, apparently taken from the time before they were killed. The story has Bruce, Dick, Damian and Alfred and is good if one like the family feels. (Not sure if any story in Urban Legends is supposed to be "canon" for the current continuity, but time-wise, Damian is dressed in Robin colours, Alfred is alive etc.)
Batman vol 3 # 51 (September 2018). Dick stands in as Batman while Bruce is called for jury duty.
DC's Crime of Passion # 1 (February 2020), has some Dick/Barbara, nothing you can't miss, in my opinion.
Batman vol 3 # 54–55. # 54 goes between flashbacks from when Dick was new in Wayne Manor and apparently doesn't know Bruce is Batman and Nightwing trying to cheer up Batman after Seline dumped him. In # 55, Dick is shot in the head by KG Beast (just another of Tom King's plot points to make Batman as miserable as possible). In Batman # 56-57, Batman hunts down KG Beast. Again, these issues have some pleasant character moments. Still, I'm not a fan of the overall plot or the result for Dick (I've read that Tom King was open to healing Dick magically pretty much straight away, but someone wanted to "take advantage" of the situation...)
Nightwing vol 4 Annual # 2. Partly set just after Dick was shot. Bruce tries to jog his memory by showing him a video of when he was shot, further traumatizing him and leading to him storming out.
Nightwing vol 4 # 50 (December 2018) – 74 (November 2020). Dick lives in Blüdhave as "Ric" and has forgotten everything for approximately the last 15 years. He wants nothing to do with his former family and starts dating Bea Bennett. Meanwhile, four other people use his old suits to go out as vigilantes since the real Nightwing has disappeared. Besides the shot in the head, he is brainwashed (with the help of a magical crystal, if I understood correctly) to help his Talon grandfather William Cobb make him a Talon (he is, for a few issues). The Joker later gets hold of the crystal and makes Dick believe the Joker fostered him and that he is "Dicky boy". He fights the other bats before it's all over...
Nightwing vol 4 # 74 (November 2020). Dick starts to get his memories back.
Batman vol 3 # 99 (November 2020). Bruce gives Dick his Nightwing suit back after two years of suffering (for us readers) with Ric, Talons and Joker War, but not really worth reading for that.
Dark Nights: Death Metal. Reality-shattering, complicated storyline 2020–2021 with lots of evil Batmen. I have read very little of it, but Dick is newly back from "Ric". In Justice League # 53–57 (Doom Metal parts 1–5), he and some others are physically D&E-transformed while fighting. In Dark Nights: Death Metal The Last Stories of the DC Universe, there are some nice Titans moments (also, Batman performs a one-panel "wedding" with Dick and Barbara...)
Nightwing vol 4 # 78 – > (March 2021 and onward) The current run of Nightwing starts (writer Tom Taylor, art mostly Bruno Redondo). After the relaunch Infinite Frontier, parts of Dick's pre-Flashpoint history in Blüdhaven have been restored. He has, for instance, been a cop and lives in the apartment building he bought during Nightwing vol 2. In my opinion, the run is visually great and full of lovely moments between Dick and his friends and family, but it's overly sweet and kind of boring, though many people seem to love the writing too.
Nightwing vol 4 # 78 (2021). Dick adopts a three-legged puppy (Haley/Bitewing) and is told he inherited Alfred's billions (he is currently richer than Bruce). He now lives in the block of flats in Blüdhave that was ostensibly destroyed in Nightwing vol 2.
Nightwing vol 4 # 80. Nightwing's first meeting with the villain Heartless, who steals hearts. That was 2021, and Dick still hasn't stopped Heartless or spent a lot of time chasing him because of so many interruptions.

Nightwing vol 4 # 82
Nightwing vol 4 # 81–82. He discovers he has an older half-sister, Melinda Zucco, conceived before John and Mary were married but brought up as the daughter of Tony Zucco. She is sworn in as the new Mayor of Blüdhaven. A big part of # 82 is flashbacks to the Grayson's and Melinda's backstory. Blockbuster, who should already be dead if what happened in Nightwing vol 2 is canon again, turns up as an adversary again (is later killed in # 94)
Nightwing vol 4 # 83. Dick announces The Alfred Pennyworth Foundation to make Blüdhaven a better place for everyone. The first goal is to ensure that no one lives on the streets a month later, "because it's getting colder".
Without a net. Unpublished tales from the DC vault # 2. (2021) One shot that is possibly supposed to take place in the current continuity; there's at least nothing to contradict it. Dick takes on a task because he feels he's the most qualified to dive 30000 feet from a flying castle (?!) into a lagoon.
Robin vol 3 # 5 (2021). The four former Robins chase after Damian, who has temporarily left Lazarus Island and wants to discuss what's happening. He gives them the slip – except Dick, who catches up with Damian and gives him a birthday present. They talk a bit, and Dick lets him go, telling the others that they will tell Batman "That we trust Damian and have faith in him." So a nice issue if you're looking for a few pages of Dick and Damian interaction.
Nightwing vol 4 # 84–86. Part of the crossover Fear State, where Scarecrow wants to control Gotham City using fear gas.
Titans Academy (2021–2022). I was never interested in picking up the book, but I guess it happened parallel to the Nightwing book until the start of Dark Crisis.
Nightwing Annual 2021 (2022). A tale of two brothers, Dick and Jason, now and then (when Jason was Robin). Dick refuses to believe Jason/Red Hood is killing people again and helps him clear it up, combined with a likeable flashback with Nightwing and JasonRobin.
Nightwing vol 4 # 88 (2022). Dick Grayson is targeted at the ceremony for starting to build Haven. It's kind of a nice issue if you like seeing what a great guy Dick is and his friends rushing to his side. Dick gets a new Nightwing suit made by Mr Terrific.
Nightwing vol 4 # 89, Superman: Son of Ka-El # 9. A team-up with Jon Kent/Superman, starting with a flashback to their first meeting when Jon was getting his powers.
"The Director" (in Batman: Urban Legends # 22-23). A story with Dick and Barbara takes place in Blüdhaven; not really my cup of tea, but readable.
Nightwing vol 4 # 90–91, Dick's building in Blüdhaven is blown up, Barbara is kidnapped, and a master assassain comes after Dick. Guest starring Wally West/The Flash, guest villain KG Beast, the gut who shot Dick back in Batman # 55.
Nightwing vol 4 # 96–97. I think it's fair to say Dick and Barbara are a couple at this stage.

Nightwing vol 3 # 98
Nightwing vol 4 # 98 (2023). Dick gets his own imp from the Fifth Dimension, Nite-Mite. He ships Dick with Starfire but teleports friends and family in to wed Dick and Barbare. (Ok, I thought it was a rather fun issue...) Introducing Olivia, daughter of Blockbuster, who sold her soul to the devil Neron; Neron is on his way to collect her soul. Nightwing & Co save her.
Nightwing vol 4 # 99. Nightwing catches Tony Zucco, who is violating parole with attempted robbery. Melinda changes her last name to Grayson-Lin.
Justice League: Road to Dark Crisis # 1, Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths # 1–7 (2022). An event where the Justice League is presumed dead (Nightwing is sure they will come back), and super criminals attack en masse. Along the way, "the Great Darkness" tries to take Nightwing as its new host, but he fights it off. At the end of the event, the Justice League disbanded. I'm pretty fed up with big events (great art, though), but Dick is a central character, the first legacy hero, and the light in the dark for Batman. It sets him up as an important leader for the superhero community going forward.
Batman vs Robin # 3 (November 2022). Damian is possessed and recruits the four former Robins to fight Batman for him in this lead-up to the event Lazarus Planet. Dick gets the sword of sin, and Batman, waiting for him to attack, thinks, "Hand-to-hand, the toughest of them all". In the end, Batman pushes Alfred (or rather, some kind of replica of Alfred from the afterlife, as a spy for the demon Nezha) on Dick's sword to get him to hesitate so Batman can knock him out. (I should say I've only read this issue of the book. Damian and Bruce fighting got old a long time ago, IMO.)
Nightwing vol 4 # 100. Heartless stages a mass breakout from Blüdhaven's private prison, which is destroyed. Nightwing talks a lot of the escapees into changing sides. The Titans come to help. Guest villain again, KG Beast. Superman and Wonder Woman asks Dick to lead – not the Justice League, which currently is disbanded – but whatever kind of protection he chooses. Dick buys the destroyed prison to build a new Titans tower there. Dick and Bruce have a heartfelt talk by Alfred's grave, though it's debatable if "I love you, Dad" is in character for Dick to say.
Nightwing vol 4 # 101–104. The Titans work together to save Olivia from Neron. Including Dick getting superpowers like that of Superman, when Neron tries to tempt him. Back-up story of Nightwing and Jon/Superman, working a case at a circus.
Titans (2023). The adult Titans are working from Blüdhaven while the Justice League is (probably very temporarily ) disbanded in this new book. It's only been a couple of issues, but I've been enjoying it so far (though I have a hard time with the pairing Beast Boy/Raven, since I know them well from the NTT ear).
Books clearly set outside the main continuity

Future State: Nightwing # 2
Future State: Nightwing # 1–2 (2021), Future State: Gotham (2021–2022) As far as I'm concerned, DC's Future State titles are stories from possible alternate futures that will never come to pass. But it was nice to see Dick written as competent and tinkering with inventions. The Future State stories continued in Future State Gotham, where Dick used the enhancing drug Brane to gain an edge in the fight against the Magistrate and assorted villains and, in the end, sacrificed himself. It didn't seem worth reading, from what I've seen.
Future State: Teen Titans # 1–2. Another possible future book, it’s not as good as the Nightwing version, IMO.
Batman Beyond (2016) vol 6. Dick is the mayor of Blüdhaven and has a daughter who becomes Batwoman in this version of Batman Beyond. To my knowledge, he is in a number of issues starting with # 25.
Batman/Catwoman, a 12-issue Black Label miniseries (2021–2022). Yet another book set in a possible future (or maybe an alternate universe). Dick is the Police Commissioner of Gotham. I haven't read the whole series, but Dick has a minor role.
In the Dark Multiverse, you can see Dick as a Talon, die during the Judas contract or be murdered by Damian if you like. (Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Hush, Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, and Deathstroke (2016) # 50.)
Titans United (2021) and Titans United: Bloodpact (2022) was two limited series that was probably published to lure in readers that liked the Titans tv show, though it wasn't a tie-in. Pretty entertaining Titans stories with different team members. The digital-first Titans: Titans Together book (2020) also didn't connect to what's going on in other books but was all right reading.

Teen Titans First Arch... Done!(?)
At least I think so??? I just finished the first few issues of the 80's Teen Titans run! It's pretty good so far, but I'd also put it a little on hold cause I got wrapped up in reading Blue Beetle (2006). I'm getting back onto reading this, so here's my review!
+++ Spoilers for Teen Titans 80's run +++
It's interesting to see how Wally actually had a crush on Raven and Beast Boy had a crush on Starfire. It makes me think about all of the shipping discourse that I'm not gonna get into cause it's not worth it tbh. I just think it's interesting how everything is. It also makes me wonder why so many newer adaptations of the Teen Titans remove Kid Flash and Wonder Girl. They're members who were there at the very conception of the team in the comics. Sure, I love Cyborg, Raven, Starfire, and Beast Boy, but I also really love Donna and I like having a speedster on the team. So far, I think it's pretty good! I just finished the first few issues where they 'defeat' Trigon aka Raven's demon dad. It was very interesting seeing how all of the characters got together but I personally didn't like how it was all just cause Raven got them together instead of it more naturally happening. Also... Raven has a HUGE forehead. It has nothing to do with the comics or how enjoyable they were, I just wanted to say it. Onto the designs... I don't mind them, but the way some of the characters are drawn or talked about makes me a bit uncomfortable. I understand that most of them are supposed to be eighteen (at least I think so???) but it's still weird. Especially how Starfire is drawn and how some of the characters talk about her. It's still too early to tell how much I'll like the characters. I like Cyborg's and Beast Boy's dynamic. Or, I guess, Changeling? Beast Boy goes by Changeling in this by the way. I'll still call him Beast Boy in this review anyway. Beast Boy's like the annoying little brother who Cyborg wants to throw across the room, but also the one person Cyborg feels comfortable talking about his fears to. Wally's character is annoying right now. All he ever talks about is his feelings for Raven. It's like whenever they'd bring up his feelings for Donna in the OG Teen Titans but worse cause it's all. the. time! I just wish he could be a character without embarrassingly pining for a woman. Maybe that's just his character? If that's true... I might just dislike him throughout the run. Dick is still the best and I love him and I can't wait to see how his and Starfire's relationship develops. Overall, I give this arch a 4/10. I thought it was okay, but not the best I've read so far, especially with how things just sort of happened. I think that's just how comics, especially in the first few issues, are. Fast paced with a lot crammed into them. Hopefully it slows down and the characters get to develop more and become closer more slowly instead of instantly cause plot reasons.

New(ish) Comics
Batman #154: Look, I don't hate this story, but did we really need another round of Thomas 'Cheater' Wayne? Especially Dr Thomas MD But Can't Handle Contraception Wayne? Been here. Done that. Bane Half-Brothers was funnier. Hopefully this is superior to every time Tommy Jr appears.
Absolute Superman #1: I think I rank this ahead of Absolute Batman but not as good as Absolute Wonder Woman. It's an interesting approach. It's very in your face and not bothering with subtlety in the analogies.
I will agree I am fond of the trend of Live Mothers With Their Sons in these stories, even if I know Lara's about to get whomped by the plot. Loved fix-it engineer Lara who wanted to be an astronaut and got washed out for having Wrong Political Views (age 9).
Action Comics #1074: in contrast, Lara in this is a 1950s cipher, literally standing there holding the baby. It's is such sharp contrast compared to Absolute Superman, especially as I read them back to back.
Aside from that, I think the Clark main plot finally picked up its pace a bit, the Kenan and Kon plot got a bit explainy but remains fun, and Kara is having a very bad time over in her plot.
Birds of Prey #15: Delighted by Cass being a menace here. Really happy we got to spend a little more time getting inside Sin's head. And Grace and Onyx looking at each other and trying to work out how to fight Barda to let her let off steam without anyone getting massively injured was so funny: they're both ripped in this comic, but Barda is, well, Big Barda.
Batgirl #1: As was generally expected, this is heavily leaning on Batgirl 2000. Interestingly as far as I am concerned, it is retaining Batman & Robin Eternal and working on twisting the word 'Orphan' to have multiple meanings! Which I've commented on before: Orphan as a name and a word has a lot of implications for Cass to be unpacked, and not all those implications are obvious on the surface.
I'm interested to see more of how they play this - it's a different approach to Cass's internal monologue and body reading skills.
As far as Shiva goes: they definitely seem to have sat down and tried to find a midpoint between preboot Shiva in Batgirl 2000 and Rebirth Shiva in say Batman and the Outsiders 2019 (both are definite influences on this).
Shazam! #17: Love the Hephaestus design. Feeling sorry for Freddy, though I liked that the whole situation is framed not as 'going evil' but as a test of strength of mind. And given the uneven power split in the family right now, externalising that jealousy makes sense.
Plastic Man No More! #2-3: caught up with Plas. Was reminded I don't actually particularly enjoy him as a character. As a set of stories focusing on treating Eel as more than just a joke character and interrogating his interiority they're doing a lot; I guess some of it is I simply don't really feel attached to him, and I'm cheering Luke O'Brian on to never talk to his dad again.
Also very much reminded these are Black Label, between the gruesome body horror, the plot, the number of character deaths and the fact Tim's running around as a Titans lieutenant checking on members.
I think these are quite good comics. I'm just not emotionally attached to Eel and these aren't managing to get me over the hump.
Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight Returns #2: and over here in the 2024 DC Santa read along, we scored a Jason Blood telling tales of Camelot! Don't know where Nimue was - she clearly managed to sidestep this drama and reminding Jason she has very different memories of the period.
Mera also kicked absolute arse and weaponised her attackers prejudices in a satisfying manner.
As a marker: John Stewart is in this title, but he's on the JL team up that are currently trapped and don't have Santa with them. This is important because...
DC'S Batman Smells, Robin Laid an Egg #1:
Santa's Oath: this is a story about Mrs Claus driving the sleigh and being a Blue Lantern, while John Stewart is asking if Santa really exists. We covered this, John! Extensively! In the DC Santa read along last year! He's real! And not only is he real this story is suggesting he's 'busy' in a way that makes me think it wants to align canonically with Silent Knight Returns, except for the fact, John, you are currently trapped in that story, and you're undoubtedly about to MEET Santa in it by the end of it.
In terms of Blue Lanterns, if anyone is going to be one, I don't hate putting it on the Clauses.
Also add this one to the tally of Real Santa stories, even if it is 'Carol' Claus.
Secret Santa: Happy Christmas to me personally, because the 2008 Secret Six lineup are currently exchanging presents and it includes hilarious cuddly Bane musing on everyone's histories.
This is amazing. I only wish Floyd and Thomas had got more banter in it. And it wasn't even written by Simone - dare I dream of another Secret Six run?
Ghosts of Christmas Present: John Constantine gets trapped in a Hallmark Movie via Hell. This is slight and underuses Constantine.
It's a Criminal Life: ...Joker gets It's a Wonderful Lifed with a ghost dead Robin!Jason. It's deeply ridiculous.
Deadman Walking: it's a Christmas mining disaster story! Ahhh, Deadman comics. Honestly a bit too earnest and instructive on how to dig people out of collapsed mines.
Silent Nite: oh the art on this one is good (Francavilla). Silent, period piece for Dr Mid-Nite set in 1941. The direction of the story is obvious from about the second page but still well told.
The Perfect Gift: Ben Turner and Mari McCabe try to buy each other Christmas presents story. Mari massively overthinks things. Ben apparently managed some serenity from the O-Sensei and just got Mari something straightforward. Donna plays wingwoman.
O Glowy Night: The art is fun in this and the concept (Clark can't stop radiating a sunny glow). I sighed at the villain.
Honestly I enjoyed this mix. Lots of characters who mostly get back ups, from various corners of DC.
The Warlord #75: this week in Skartaris we reach an anniversary issue and with it...the return of Graemore, Tara's old childhood friend who likes trying to steal her away from Travis (via such seduction methods like 'not wandering off into the wilderness to kill things without returning for months on end' and 'appearing at meals' and 'asking Tara about her feelings').
Travis and Tara actually discuss the fact Travis is never in Shamballah for more than 5 minutes at a time and that she's tired of it.
In the Ancient Atlantean artefacts line of story, we find out that the USAF identity card thing Travis found was from the 23rd century, yet left with all the other materials of the ancients. COULD IT BE MORE TIME TRAVEL? (because this story doesn't have enough as it is). I feel sorry for whatever poor fool got trapped back in Wizard World and had to live out his days there to get this stuff over to the Ancient Atlanteans.
(Also uh the New Atlanteans try to invade Shamballah and Travis ends up punching Tara to carry her as they try to escape so she won't try to make a heroic last stand. Which. Certainly a thing that happened here)

A trick for Coldflash please <3
Hello! Look at this, I think I have just the thing for your trick-or-treat bag with this little ficlet
Read on below, or on AO3
The Silver Fox and the Bunny Rabbit
Barry didn’t know how his life had taken this turn.
There had been a time when he was sure he could see each bend in the road of his future stretched out in front of him. A nice, stable career in forensics. A little apartment in a quiet part of town. Maybe a spouse and two point three kids who he could dote on when he was financially secure enough for that.
Then came the lightning. The Speed. Heroics and criminals and the world nearly ended a good dozen or so times. A group of people like him coming together to form a team. And a criminal who always managed to do more good than bad, making more mischief than danger, keeping Barry on his toes and leaving him with a grin on his face. One who had proved himself a hero enough times to get the attention of the JLA.
All of that to lead him here, to this moment.
To trying not to laugh at Leonard Snart, who was eyeing him up from across the crowd at the Justice League’s Unofficial Halloween Party And New Member Mixer that had taken over Guy’s bar at Warriors.
Leonard Snart, who was wearing a pair of white fox ears on his head and not bothering to hide his own laugh at Barry’s rabbit ears and the perky tail safety pinned to the back of his jeans.
Leonard Snart, who was making his way to his side with a drink in each hand.
“An arctic fox, Snart? Really?” Barry took the drink -some fruity slush monstrosity that was giving him a sugar buzz just looking at it- and had a long, loud slurp from the thick straw.
“A bunny rabbit, Red? Really?” Len sipped his Sapphire Alpine then licked a bit of sanding sugar off the corner of his mouth.
Barry watched his tongue, only a little transfixed. “Touche.” He rolled his shoulder in a lazy shrug. “I only got off work about twenty minutes ago. This was all that was left in the costume shop.” Reaching up, he touched one of the ears to make sure he hadn’t knocked them askew. “What, do you think I should have gone with the whole ensemble and worn the corset and fishnets?”
Frozen for a moment with the drink almost to his lips, Len narrowed his eyes when he snapped out of it. “That was just mean.”
“It’s Halloween. What better time to be just a little bit evil?” Barry held his glass out until Len sighed and tapped his against it.
Being on the same side hadn’t changed how they teased and taunted and bantered together, Barry was pleased to learn. Matching each other barb for barb, they made their way to the other end of the bar where the crowd was thinner and they could more easily hear each other shooting playful digs.
“I only had a few minutes to plan this. What’s your excuse for phoning in a costume, hmm?” Barry waved his hand to take in the other party goers, all of whom were dressed up. Some as simply as they were, others in elaborate outfits. One of the Titans Trainees was wearing a fully functional arcade machine, while Gar was wandering the room as a dragon with Raven on his back.
“I knew you were going to wear something like that.” Len reached out and tweaked the end of one of Barry’s ears. It was soft and fluffy and the colour clashed garishly with his shirt. “Maybe I wanted to stick to my own theme. Remind everyone here who they’re thinking of working with.”
Barry considered him over his drink as he stirred the slush with the straw. “A trickster. A thief.” Len looked like he was going to start preening under what he clearly took as praise. Barry smirked and lifted the straw to lick some of the red ice off of it. “A big snowball of fluff.”
“Careful,” Len murmured, grabbing hold of Barry’s wrist and pulling the straw over to lick a drop of syrup that was clinging to the end. “Or I might want to get a bite of that poofy little tail of yours.” He bared his teeth slowly, and for the first time, Barry noticed that he was wearing a pair of pointed fangs on his canines.
Stepping back, Barry waited until Len pursued him, matching his steps like he had their bickering. “You might want to. But you’d have to catch me, first.”
“You know what they say about predators, Barry. When you run, they just have to chase you.” He leaned in, putting his lips close to Barry’s ear. “So run, little rabbit.”
A shiver ran down his spine and lightning crackled in the air around him, and Barry put his hands to Len’s chest to push him back. Just slightly. Just enough to be able to look him in the eyes.
And he kissed him.
Quick and firm and searching. When Len began to react and return the kiss, Barry pulled away, leaving him standing there with a dazed look on his face and his lips still puckered.
“Tag,” Barry said. “You’re it. Catch me if you can, snow fox.”

Bruce throwing a batarang at his son's throat makes no sense
When you read a comics, you have to ask yourself "is this in character or does it only serve the plot?", because comics LOVE to disregard a character's personality or morals to make their plot work. If it's the second one, I like to throw it in the trash that isn't canon.
Well, the batarang accident in Under The Red Hood is one of them. Let me explain:
The front of a human throat is a very delicate area of our body. On the back, we have our bones to protect the shit in there (and it is still a fragile area. One hit well placed, and you're dead), but the front is full access to so much stuff. When killing someone in a single strike, one could choose to slice their throat. There's only 2cm between the skin's surface and the principal arteries, a small blade is enough. At least, you can hurt their vocal cords. At worse, you cut the link between the heart, the lungs and the brain (aka, they're dead).
Bruce does not kill, so him targetting the throat with a sharp object is already out of character. It's too risky, he could easily kill them. But to his own son??? That he grieved and who is back from the dead??? Completely crazy.
So why? Why writing Batman throwing a batarang at his son's throat? Here is my theory:
I am 99% sure that you are not supposed to pick a side in Under The Red Hood, that it was intended to be a story where there was no clear solution, neither Jason or Bruce are totally right and both have their own good reasons for their actions and decisions. It's another nail in the coffin to demonstrate that the Joker won that day he killed Jason. Whatever happens, he wins, because the Joker only wants one thing: to mentally break Batman. It's difficult to write a story with such a goal, to be able to make your readers side with both at the same time. You need to balance everyone's actions so noone is too much of a "bad" guy.
However, at this point, Jason has already attacked Tim 2 TIMES. And even if Jason has his reasons to do so, Tim is completely innocent and does not deserve it. He's just a teenager doing his best to help others. Jason has hurt Tim badly, a good guy, and they need to balance this out. And so, they decide to make Bruce throws a batarang at Jason's throat.
It didn't work as intended AT ALL, because a lot of y'all totally forgive Jason's brutal attacks on an innocent teenager, but will not forgive Bruce throwing a batarang to the throat of his son, even if he is a mass murderer and attempted to kill another of his protegees at this point (I'm just pointing out why it wasn't a predictable outcome for the writing team. This is literally a post about how I hate that they made Bruce threw a batarang at Jason's throat, don't come at me)
And in the animated movie adaptation, done years later, Bruce doesn't throw a batarang at Jason's throat, but at his hand holding the gun (this confrontation is so better in the movie. With Jason pointing his gun at the Joker, than at himself, showing that, inside, he doesn't want the Joker dead, he wants his father's attention, he wants him to show that he cares, because Bruce sucks at showing emotions and communation. And, when the building exploses, Bruce throws himself over Jason to protect him, probably the same way he wished he could have all those years ago. Good shit right there) Why make this change? Is it because a batarang to the throat that too gruesome for the format? Or is it because the Titans' Tower didn't happen in the animated universe (RIP Tim, forever in Queer Jail)? Or is it because they have seen how people reacted to the comics and didn't like it?
It's just a theory, but I'm pretty sure I'm right.
Shout out to the fanfic writers who say the batarang hit Jason's hand and ricocheted into his neck, making it an accident. That's possible, Bruce can fuck up a bit with the emotions and everything going on.
#batman#bruce wayne#red hood#jason todd#my “Bruce wouldn't do that” series#which is probably going to be in majority about interactions with Jason#in no way he is perfect but he has a strict code he wouldn't do that!#my ramblings#dc comics

• Oh wait... Did you ACTUALLY persuaded him to just STAY IN BED and cuddle with you?!
• oki, first of all: position
• I can imagine him do big spoon, little spoon with you
• or if he's not so sleepy yet and just wants to make sure that you're okay, then the pretzel is perfect for him!

• OR maybe the sweetheart pose is appropriate as well!

• just imagine resting as his strong arm holds you by your hips or your back
• he wakes up every time when you move

• In sleep he always holding you 'cause he wants to keep you safe and feel close to him
• It helps him so much when he can hear your heartbeat. He also knows from this that you're close to him.
• From this, we can assume that it's really hard for him when he's far away from you
• doesn't sleep too much
• if you convince him to go to bed with you at 20.00, he'll be gone by 6.00
• he's not a cuddle person, but if you ask for it, he'll lay down with you for a few hours
• he feels bad cause of he has to leave you early, but it's not like he could do anything about it
• 'cause yk, he knows what his most important mission is
• humanity is has to be protected

Fate's Guardian by @peaceheather I Chapters 28/28 I Completed sort of good Loki, BAMF Loki, Emotional Hurt/Comfort
Set roughly a year post-Thor:TDW, reference to events in Guardians of the Galaxy. Pretty much a shameless fixit fic. No pairings. A being shows up on Earth looking for Loki, the Avengers get pulled in to see what's going on, and they all learn what Loki has *really* been up to all this time. I dunno, I was in a mood to write something like this, so I did. First posted to FFnet, if you prefer to read it there.
Because I Could Not Stop For Death by @soulessrobot I Chapters 6/6 I Completed Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 Compliant, Fix-It, Big Sis Hela, BAMF Hela, Loki has a plan
Warning Infinity War Spoilers Loki has a plan. Sometimes all you need to kill a Mad Titan is a Goddess of Death.
Withering Away by @galaxythreads I Chapters 10/10 I Completed Loki & Thor, Canon Divergence - Avengers: Endgame, Fix-It of Sorts, Whump, thor whump
[ENDGAME SPOILERS!] Thor failed. He failed his family, his people, his friends, and drinking solves nothing. When the Avengers arrive to initiate their plan, they find a much different Thor. One who’s only willing to agree on one condition: When they get the Tesseract, it will be on the Statesmen, and Thor will bring back Loki with him. (Fix-it) Avengers as family! Whump!
Changing the odds by Ikajo I Chapters 13/13 I Completed Canon Divergence - Avengers: Endgame, BAMF Loki, Time Travel, no one dies, Good Loki, Loki Does What He Wants
Doctor Strange saw over fourteen million different scenarios and only victory in one. He had not counted for a certain god of mischief however. Because who else would turn the certain to uncertain it would be him.
Mischief on Midgard by Areitheperidotdragon, Moonybird I Chapters 68/68 I Completed Banished Loki, Loki Does What He Wants, Trauma, Implied/Referenced Torture, Loki & Tony Stark Friendship
Takes place after the first Avengers movie, then goes AU. If Odin truly sees Thor and Loki as equal, they ought to face equal punishment for equal crimes. Thor's suggestion is granted and Loki is stripped of his powers as he is banished to Midgard where he has to either prove himself worthy or spend the rest of his life on earth without any special powers. Loki though is not so easily broken. He might not have magic nor supernatural strength. But he still has his wits, his gift of deception, his knowledge, and his basic skills as a fighter. And he is not ready to just lie down and admit defeat. He is ready to do what it takes to rise once again and handle the incoming threat from the void.

So listen to this!
Have any of you seen the twitter post about the zombie flower rarepair!
I've been contemplating about a similar situation for jaydick. And since we already have an amazing fic of Jay writing Red Hood/Nightwing fics. I had a hard time figuring something until it hit me just now!
Dick and kori spilt up early after Dick leaves his home and base in Gotham.
Just peachy. Exactly what Dick needed after his Dad/mentor "fired" him and had a terrible fall out with him, who didn't hesitate to bring another boy home to take Dick's place and wear his mantle. Bruce carelessly giving him his family legacy.
It's good that Dick made up with Jason. The kid was good and he deserves good things to happen to him.
But Dick now is crestfallen of his break up with Kori. He so pathetically goes on the Internet searching of Nightwing x Starfire stories to read...
Dick discovers that his alias tag is not frequently shipped with Starfire, but rather filled with his other teammates and mostly with speedy... sometimes even with orgies with the whole Titans team.... thats is something for sure.
The fanfiction reading site does cheer him abit, if getting his mind of his horrible break up can count as cheering.
Dick stumbles upon the original characters x Nightwing tag, and there is one recognisable name out in the pages. Prejudice_Against_The_System88, this person has a great fanfiction collection of their original character "Red Cardinal" being romantically shipped with Nightwing. They also have some stories with Robin/Nightwing. Their stories varies but are mostly on in the R rated romantic genre. Their writing is good and promising for someone, who Dick assumes, based on the authors notes, in their high school year.
Dick actually enjoys the Red Cardinal/Nightwing fics mostly on the site. He starts leaving comments for the author. Appreciating their thoughtful writing of his character and their growing maturity of how they are dealing with Red Cardinal's feelings for Nightwing.
To say Dick becomes obsessed with CardinalWing (the ship name, as bestowed by himself upon the author) is an understatement. He becomes Prejudice_Against_The_System88's number one fan. Always commenting and engaging the author in discussion of each story they release, who in turn are so enthusiastic they sometimes slip up information of future chapters or stories they are working on.
Dick lives in a bliss of this hobby for great while. Until the author starts complaining of school tests and how their schedule won't allow them for more posting.
Their posting dwindles gradually until they fully stop for a month.... Dick gets worried that maybe the author is not feeling appreciated enough. ( he had read of that author who held their new chapters hostages In exchange for 50 comment on each chapter or something after all) luckily, his lovely Prejudice are not that kind of person. Still though, Dick miss their presence and making two other accounts to leaves comments just for them won't hurt him in anyway so he does. Maybe the additional engagement would lift them up again.
His two other accounts, does not engage well with the author who had disappeared now for two months.
Dick's real life is not fairing any better too...
He comes back to earth after a long mission in space to find that Jason has been murdered by the Joker and Bruce hadn't even bothered to tell him about that
Dick is devastated by that and his whole team are their by his side trying to comfort him, even poor kori is back by him holding him and being there for him.
Dick is so broken after that he fully immersed himself in his work and completely forgot about his teenage years hobby...
Now I don't know how to continue this?
Maybe Jason suddenly remember his account's password and log in to be blasted with tons of notifications of a time long gone with multiple people engaging all his stories that are left with no reply from him. It would warm his heart a bit but it would also make him so bitter of everything that he had been robbed of.
And would he complete his stories? I think yes!
He'd maybe update his account with a short fic of Red Cardinal coming back from the underworld as gag effect lol, he's not expecting people to interact with his work, especially after all these years. But who knows maybe there is someone out there who awaited his long sought-after return....
#that twitter post where someone made fanwork of a rarepair and when they were about to quit#their only fan of said rare pair started makin#g several accounts with different mannerisms to convince the author they had the real support they deserved#jaydick#i don't know how to go with this#or precisely i'm not a writer so idk how to properly write it lol#if there's much typos here i honestly don't care

I'd love to read some combat action if that's something you want to write! Maybe a small team doing spec ops, maybe a full combined arms assault, either way you know BT and Cooper are gonna do some fastball shenanigans when the opportunity presents itself.
I love that the fandom has apparently collectively agreed that Jack Loves Getting Yeeted (absolutely correct)
When the alarms go off, Jack’s halfway out of bed before he even realises he’s awake. His helmet is on the table by the door and he grabs it in passing. No time to get dressed with a base-wide alert like that deafening him.
The other Pilots are scrambling around him, bouncing off each other like the bumper cars Jack always liked when he was a kid. It’s more jarring now, but the flow evens out as they near the hangar. They know what they’re doing, it just takes a minute, sometimes, for them to get there.
All their Titans are already on the move, spreading out through the hangar, waiting for their Pilots to embark. Someone even uses their jump kit to get to their Titan first, eager to be out the door.
Jack takes it a little easier, because everyone remembers that time Wilson tripped and broke his nose before he ever saw battle.
Everyone gets in their Titans with no problems, and Jack is relieved that BT starts dampening the noise the second the cockpit closes around him. This is familiar to him, at least, even if the alarm isn’t the kind that any of them hear very often.
“Cooper, Alexander, Aoki, Castañeda, head west.”
“Yes, sir,” they say in almost-unison, three other Titans turning to follow BT out of the hangar.
He’s worked with Alexander before. The other two are strangers, but he knows Aoki is desperate to prove herself since she’s the newest Pilot and one of the youngest. He trusts her, though, because she wouldn’t be here if SRS command thought she wasn’t capable.
“There are enemies inbound. Approximately three minutes and seventeen seconds to contact. Six moving objects.”
Well, those odds aren’t great. All six of them can’t be enemy Titans, right?
“Anyone else got a better idea of what’s out there?” Jack asks.
There’s a private communication network between them, proximity-based and code-locked. They can say whatever they want without being overheard.
“Got it,” Alexander says a minute later. “Three Titans, three vehicles. Could be some ground troops but we’re not picking it up. We got a plan?”
“I have an idea, but BT’s not going to like it.”
“I do not like many of your so-called plans,” BT confirms.
Harsh, but Jack is well aware that BT thinks he’s a bit of an idiot sometimes. Maybe if he stopped throwing himself into danger, or eating snack cakes past their best-by date, but life is about the danger! And mild food poisoning.
“I need you guys to give cover fire with BT and then hold on my signal.”
“Would you like to provide more information?” BT asks.
“Nope, we’re good.”
And he got shot a little bit, the last time he said that, but shit happens. And it barely even scarred, so he feels like it wasn’t actually that bad.
The Titans spread evenly, BT second from the left. It’s barely light enough to see out, and as they race along, he’s pretty sure he gets another great idea. One that BT doesn’t disagree with him on, so that’s a great start!
One of the enemy Titans opens fire, and the four of them target their fire on the unfortunate idiot that made a spectacle of themself. The Titan starts sparking and stuttering almost immediately, and by the time the other Titan brings its guns to play, it’s too late.
At least until a tank round blows an arm off Alexander’s Titan, and some very creative swearing crashes through BT’s speakers.
“Cover fire stops now!” Jack barks, and steps forward.
There’s something about disembarking at speed that feels like getting flung off a moving vehicle and down a cliff, or something like that, but it’s very chaotic and a part of Jack is always very relieved when BT catches him.
BT launches him forward, and he uses the jump kit to get higher as he gets closer, out of the line of fire of the small guns mounted on the front of the vehicles. He can’t tell what they are, exactly, in the predawn light. But he saw that they’re stuck in one place and move side to side, not up and down.
If he gets above the bullets, he has nothing to worry about.
Theoretically.
BT had a lot of opinions about that part.
He drops straight down on top of one of the cars, grabbing one of the bars bolted along the top and swinging feet-first through the driver’s side window. He pushes off something inside – the driver’s chest, he thinks – and tosses a grenade as a goodbye ‘fuck you’. The jump kit gets him away from the explosion, but the driver next to him is aware of what just happened, because they pull a pistol on him.
He jumps, and trusts BT to be there to catch him.
He is, and so are the other two uninjured Titans on either side of him. Alexander’s hanging back, supporting them with cover fire, but careful not to pick too many battles. Even though Alexander’s built like a brick wall, he’s brain over brawns, and he’ll make sure not to shoot them in the back.
BT cups his hand around Jack, protecting him from a burst of incoming fire, and then he’s back in the pilot’s seat and ready to kick some ass.
His Titan is ahead of him, already shooting at one of the remaining Titans that’s closing at a run, trying to capitalise on the vulnerability of a Pilot not yet embarked. They’re a little too late or that, but there’s nowhere for them to run, so they keep charging.
Brave, Jack has to admit, before their bots crash together. The other Titan is bigger and heavier than them, but that just means that BT has the advantage of being faster on the ground.
And, unlike anyone else in this fight, he has Jack.
“Relinquishing control to Titan,” Jack says, and sits back with his hands off the controls. BT can process these kinds of things way faster than he can, and in a fight against an objectively better opponent, Jack might be a liability.
Besides, BT’s new and improved form comes with seatbelts. He doesn’t use them often, because disembarking at a moment’s notice can turn the tide of a fight, but he’ll need them now if BT wants to do some kind of crazy move.
BT does, and Jack is really going to have to talk to him about whatever kind of flippy gymnast yoga shit just went down, but in the meantime–
“Aoki, get those other two cars out of play,” Jack barks as BT gives him controls back, and he and Castañeda turn as one to face the last remaining Titan.
Jack tries to say he’s not a glory hound or anything, but he does kind of like that he’s going to add one more to his body count on this mission. They’re a crack team, him and BT, and he likes proving that over and over again, even if there’s no dispute about it.
Still, slamming your way through battle to indiscriminately kill everything is a great way to injure allies and get people pissed off at you. So he lets his teammate take the shot, and Castañeda rocks it, just like Jack expects of him.
“Hey, Command!” Aoki says cheerfully. “We smoked ‘em! Want us to bring you back a present? Bet we could pull something off these Titans’ data cores.”
Command’s reply comes quickly.
“Retrieve enemy data cores and helmets. Do not engage survivors if avoidable.”
“Toss me,” Jack says eagerly, already half out of his seat.
He can hear the disapproval in BT’s silence, but the cockpit opens up, and BT’s hand is resting just underneath.
BT flings him forward again, a little more gently this time. Jack lands on top of one of the downed Titans, and crouches to try to pull the door open. Success! And the Pilot was killed alongside their Titan, so there’s nobody to shoot at him. He hates when people shoot at him.
“Core and helmet secured from Titan one,” he reports. He takes a running jump back to BT, who catches him easily and deposits him back in the cockpit. He can let the others get the rest of what they’re after.
The other Titans’ cockpits are open, Pilots chit-chatting and occasionally waving away wisps of smoke from the trashed vehicles. The other teams have reported back their own successes already, so it’s not like Jack’s team is slacking.
“Anyone feel like pizza when we get back home?” Castañeda asks, slouched comfortably, the ubiquitous cowboy hat pulled down over his eyes. Until he spoke up, Jack kind of thought he was napping, but apparently that’s not the case.
“I’m always ready to eat,” Alexander agrees, and Aoki looks like she’s thinking about agreeing.
The best they can do now, in the field, is reheated and prepackaged food, but they’re all used to that, so he doesn’t think they’ll complain too much.
“BT, we ready to go back to base?” he asks.
“All clear.”
“Let’s go, team,” Jack calls, and they start making their way back to the closest thing to home that they have.

Been reading your posts and saw the meme about how other dc characters act when they are around a Batfamily member and they loose all their critical thinking skills
Has that been a problem in comics for decades? I noticed that with Damian in titans stuff…to the point I became annoyed because it just making him a mini Bruce rather then played with the potentially interesting dynamics he could have.
Do Dick and Tim suffer from the mini Bruce approach in their titans stuff a lot too? It gotten to a point in Damian’s stuff for me, that there should be an editorial mandate saying “Just because they are Batman legacy characters, doesn’t mean they are clones of him.”
for Damian, it's been a long time since I read his teen titans stuff (and I didn't read a ton b/c most of it wasn't good), but I do remember that in the intro arc it did feel very Damian centric, and some of it was like.. the other characters powers were too easily cancelled out by some random gadget. like the gun that shot kory when introducing the capturing the team part of the plotline. that was stupid. (and in general, characters powers get randomly cancelled out by a gadget is a common thing in the batfam characters stuff). I can't remember WRT critical thinking, been literal years since I read the comic, but I do narrative focus was disappointing.... even for being a Damian fan while reading it.
for Tim in YJ I guess it felt like he was the leader for no reason, but I can't remember who had the general critical thinking skills or if none of them did. But he also got randomly super tough in one plotline in a way that made me give up on the series for a bit (where he was treated as like. the only person capable of standing up to Harm for some reason which was 9_9). However, in Titans / Young Justice Graduation Day Tim definitely felt like he was the only YJ character who was allowed to be portrayed as "right" (in which "right" obviously means listening to Dick, the paragon of reason) , because everyone else's recklessness had to be exaggerated to explain why the YJ team is so terrible. But god forbid Tim be slandered with the rest of the team 9_9
Dick it definitely holds so true, he was part of the inspiration for me reblogging it :P like the whole "robin is the default leader" thing doesn't start except with Dick, and it wasn't just because Dick was such a logical choice. It was b/c the writers decided to not let anyone else have ideas besides him in the original teen titans series. I've heard it as "everyone had one character trait and his was leader" but like... many characters didn't even have one character trait. Donna's was "girl". like the writing was clearly not balanced or good. and it's sooooo conspicuous because even in NTT, which is generally a pretty good series, the other characters will come across investigations when doing stuff while Dick is absent and be like ":C :C :C oh no dick our critical thinking person is gone whatever shall we do". Like multiple times! and IIRC that happened in the 1966 Teen Titans comics I read too in 1 issue where Dick was off screen. but like "dick is the smartest teen titan" "dick is the best leader" "dick could take out the other titans with planning but just won't b/c he's nice" - any of these situations existing is basically because he's writer's pet a la bruce. inb4 - I'm not saying any instance in which Dick is a good leader shouldn't count. but like. him being the obvious choice over other people is writer's pet-ism and Marv does not give other characters a chance to shine in the role, yet gives Dick plenty of chance to shine. So there is no fair comparison or way to say "he's best".
Anyway, I'll say Dick is by far the one I have noticed it being most true of. If you want to just read Teen Titans comics and have fun he is fr like the Batman of teen titans comics.

a vast methodical fragment
(this is a cross post from cohost. pretty much all my stuff ends up there first. that said! writing here is what initially led to me getting a job as professional critic so some stuff will still end up here)
i am playing Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth. no spoilers in this post! don't panic! though I have seen the ending and will eventually write on What This Remake Business Is Even About Now I'm taking a slower recircling back through the world and doing side content. because this is a good world. that's maybe the biggest strength of the entire game! there's a remarkable sense that the world has been as well-considered as the characters. part of what makes the remake trilogy feel more solid than something like final fantasy 16 is the ways in the texture added into every location. final fantasy 16 had a lot of maps and lore and codex entries that were meant to create a sense of "realness" to Valisthea but the sum total of that falters compared to even some of Rebirth's smallest moments. no timeline, however meticulous, can compare to watching protesters in lower Junon wave signs outside of the Shinra-controlled entrance to the city or seeing how bars are themed in the Gold Saucer.
when I wrote about the end of Final Fantasy 16I made comparisons to Triangle Strategy. both games tackled similar matters on paper but in practice, I felt that the latter succeeded because it had an understanding of its settings material realities. In their podcast on ff16, the folk at Abnormal Mapping (I think specifically Austin as the guest third chair) noted that while the game had aspirations about tackling slavery, it only ever really showed Bearers being used for servant work. they aired out laundry or lit fireplaces. it belied a certain lack of consideration for the world and its needs why is someone airing out laundry with magick when they could be cultivating a field? yes, Titan is a great summon useful in war but would his existence not affect the Dhalmekian Republic's infrastructure and architecture?
Rebirth doesn't have this issue. Walking in any town or exploring the outlying regions starts readily reveals locations that have a great deal of consideration and consistency. I know where the food come from, I can stumble in on teachers reading stories to classes or else telling them some local folklore. there are popular songs, i run into veterans of old wars and stumble on abandoned forts that still have old ammo boxes in them, local superstitions and phrases. the pieces fit together.
I've quibbles with Rebirth in the sense that I think it's a bit distracted as a story. there are times when the larger sound and fury threaten to signify nothing and I don't think that's simply to do with the fact that it's adapting a fairly freewheeling portion of the 1997 original. but that's a very particular complaint targeted at the meta-narrative. What Is This All About?
for the moment, i'm content putting that question on hold. the contrast to ff16 is perhaps what's ringing most loudly in my mind. this is a world with wave-race dolphin riding, combat simulators where an android named Chadley digitizes local gods into pocket-sized summon materia. it's a place where your ninja friend accidentally creates countless copies of a joke-character and they all team up to renovate a seaside inn. but I take it more seriously.
a jaded person might say that it had that grace built in because of my nostalgia but the truth it that earned this consideration through the care built into the world. it didn't make demands of me. the developers looked at the world, asked how it would work and wove that into everything. i know the latest gimmick popsicle flavors for crying out loud!
the difference between a heap of lore and a properly built world can be thin and arbitrary but if there's one thing I really appreciate from this ongoing Remake project, it's the how much the player understands How It Got The Way It Is.
