The U.K.’s ingrained class system is a large part of why Britons have never embraced the Duchess of Sussex.

Once you are persona non grata in the U.K. tabloid press, it’s difficult to tunnel your way out of that particular cesspool.

The British also don’t understand the whole concept of the American dream: the ability to chart your own destiny, to pull yourself up by your bootstraps, so to speak, and create the future you want in the land of opportunity, no matter your origins.

The British concept of staying in your lane is why Meghan is an anathema to so many across the pond, and it’s why the Daily Mail, basing its premise on absolutely nothing, contrives to declare that she is using her title to enter U.S. politics, despite the fact that there is nothing to indicate this is what Meghan wants.

That Meghan would use the status she has now attained, both through her acting career and as the Duchess of Sussex, to lobby her representatives in government is a quintessentially American thing to do. Here in America, you can want paid family leave, use your clout to try to achieve it and not have an ulterior motive. Here, it’s seen as “giving back,” in taking everything that you’ve worked so hard for and achieved success in and paying it forward.

Here in America, coming from humble roots to arrive at a place of power and influence is considered admirable. It’s something to be proud of.

Meghan, is a modern success story: a mixed-race woman who has charted her own path and is using her now-considerable clout to try to make lives better for average working Americans.

It’s time for the British tabloids to understand that America fought a war and won its independence from Britain in the 1700s. Meghan, like so many other self-made Americans, is not going to give up that independence to appease the British hoi polloi. Nor should she.

"Alright!" Y/N exclaimed and removed her Canon 90D DSLR camera from her right eye. "That's it for today, guys! Great job everyone!" shouted once more and looked at the photos that she took from the monitor of the computer.

She was doing a photoshoot for one of the famous magazine companies, The Hollywood Reporter. She was one of the photographers for the magazine company for almost a year already. She surely was so happy to receive a call way back a year ago before that she was hired. And, she surely was so happy to pursue what she dreamed of.

"Great shots, Y/N. Great as always." Someone said from behind her and Y/N could just smile at the compliment.

"Thank you, Millie." She said and looked at Camille. Camille became a fashion designer like how she always wanted to be. She worked alongside Y/N in several photoshoots just this year, coincidentally.

"Want to grab some coffee on the way home?" Camille asked as she prepared her purse and placed it on her shoulder.

"Sure," Y/N said and got the hard drive that was plugged into the computer since all of the photos were there. Not only was she a photographer but also one of the editors for the magazines. "But after that, I gotta go somewhere."

"Are you gonna go to that place again?" Camille asked and Y/N looked at her and nodded as an answer. They walked out together as they were the only people left there.

"I'll probably call Erika after you go. Just gonna remind her about the reunion that our family had planned for this weekend." Camille said while walking beside Y/N.

"But she'll probably be with Harrison right now," Y/N said.

"They're still together all these years? Never knew she was a relationship person honestly." Camille said.

"Me either. But, she's happy so I'm happy for her." Y/N said.

They entered the coffeehouse that was packed with busy people. The scent of coffee went to their noses as soon as they got in.

"I totally forgot that it's still Friday today," Camille said. "So many people."

They lined up in the long line since there was only one cashier available.

"By the way, have you seen the latest movie?" Camille asked Y/N and she gave a confused look.

"Which one?" Y/N asked back.

"I think it was the— erm— The latest Spiderman movie. I don't know the full title but I heard they just released a new one this month." Camille said. "Tom is in it right?"

Tom.

That name that Y/N will never forget.

Y/N smiled under her breath before answering her. "Yeah, I guess."

After that, they just waited for the line to be shorter and shorter until they were the next one to order. After they ordered, they stood in the corner waiting for their coffee to be made.

"One cappuccino and latte for Y/N!"

"I'll get it," Camille said and walked fast to get their orders. She mouthed thank you to the lady and went to Y/N's side again. "Here's your cappuccino," Camille said and handed Y/N her drink as they made their way out of the coffeehouse.

"So, I'll see you on Monday at work?" Camille asked.

"Always." That was what Y/N answered. "Take care!" She added before waving goodbye to Camille and went in the opposite direction as her with her drink in her hand.

Y/N parked her car on the side of the empty road. After how many months, almost a year, of driving lessons, she could finally drive for herself.

Before she got out, she got her drink and her other things first and removed her coat. She got out of the car with her things and shut the door and locked it.

The wind suddenly blew her hair and she smiled at this great feeling. As she walked towards the sand, she took off her shoes and placed them in the same spot that she would sit on. Luckily, no one was in the place other than herself.

The sun was almost setting and the waves were still moving in the ocean. She had come to this place almost every day or at least most of the time. The light of the sun reflected on the sun symbol on her bracelet that he gave her a few years back. She sighed at the thought of him.

She had lost contact with him just almost a year ago because of his busy schedule but Harrison would be the one to tell her how Tom was doing and all. Well, not really lost contact but they rarely contacted each other for the past few months due to their work.

Although those had happened, she never stopped going back to this place that Tom wanted her to always go. This was the place that kept her alive and stress-free.

Their relationship had its ups and downs.

Tom became one of the most famous celebrities in the world ever since he got the role of being Spiderman. After that, he had more upcoming movies for the past years later on.

Although there may have been rumors about him being in a relationship with one of his co-stars, Zendaya, because of their roles in Spider-Man, her trust for him remain. Although at some point, it hurt her but that just passed away.

Overall, she was happy for him and for what he has achieved. She was so proud of what he had become. It didn't stop her from visiting his family's house and spending time with them.

"I wish you were here right now." She whispered to herself as the wind could not stop making her hair fly.

"And I'm here." A voice said from a distance but loud enough for her to hear. Her eyes widen at this very familiar voice and her eyes began to water.

She slowly looked in the direction of the voice that she heard and there stood the person that she has been waiting for.

He gave her the same smile that she would never forget. He still looked the same as before but he was more muscular now. He looked better in person than on the big screen or in his interviews. His brown hair is now shorter but still had curls on.

"Tom?" She whispered and he could just easily read her lips calling his name. He opened his arms widely for her. She then ran up to his open arms and did not think twice about wrapping her arms around him. He spun her around as soon as he closed his arms around her.

Her tears fell from her eyes while hugging him. When Tom heard her sob, he placed a hand on her head and stroked her hair. "I'm home, love." He whispered to her.

She pulled away for a while and admired him. His face features, his hair. Everything about him. She suddenly pinched his cheeks with both of her hands that surprised Tom.

"Ow! What was that for?" He asked as he felt the slight pain from the pinch. His voice is deeper than before and his British accent is kind of mixed with an American accent.

"You are real," Y/N said that made Tom chuckle.

She was still as adorable as always. Tom thought

"Of course I am. You thought you're hallucinating?" Tom asked her and she nodded.

"It's been so long to finally see you personally," Y/N said and she slapped him on the chest. "You kept me waiting you know!"

"I'm sorry, love." Tom apologized and kissed her forehead. "Four years, huh?"

"And three months," Y/N added while looking at him and grinned.

"You have been counting," Tom said that made Y/N nod. "I missed you so much." He said and pulled her for a hug again. "God, I do miss you."

"I missed you too, Thomas." She replied and noticed the scrunchie that was on his wrist. The same scrunchie that she gave him before. "You kept it." She said and held to his wrist where the scrunchie was and smiled at him.

"Of course. It really reminded me of you." He answered.

They decided to sit down and talked about each other's new life. Tom was surprised about Y/N's career since he never thought she would be into photography like his brother, Harry.

"Your mom really influenced me to go to that," Y/N said. "That's why I'm so grateful for her."

"I had a photoshoot in that company actually," Tom said and that made her eyes widen. "Really?" She asked.

"Yeah, but that was like two thousand seventeen or something." He answered.

"Your American accent is really showing up," Y/N said and smiled at him.

"Well, most of my roles required this accent which I'm good at, surprisingly." He answered.

"How long have you been here already?" She asked him, curiously.

"Just today. I told my family first and Harrison that I was coming back for a week's vacation. And, I wanted to surprise you." He answered and placed his arms around her shoulders. She placed her head on his shoulder and gave a relieved sigh. Her happiness cannot be measured right now.

"You wanna go to the water?" Tom said and Y/N suddenly ran away from him and giggled.

"If you could catch me first!" Y/N said and ran which made Tom scoffed a laugh.

"I will!" Tom said and chased after her. After a few seconds of running, Tom was a few inches away from her and scooped her legs and carried her bridal style and he walked towards the water.

"No! Put me down! The water is gonna be so cold!" Y/N said but Tom ignored her and laughed. Then, Y/N wrapped her arms around his neck and forcefully pushed both of them down together to the water.

"Holy shit, the water is so cold," Y/N said as she raised her head up from the water as well as Tom. "Damn you, Holland!"

"You're gonna pay for that," Tom said and splashed her with water and Y/N did the same. Basically, the couple had a water fight. They kept laughing and splashing on the water to each other even as they stood up.

Tom then grabbed Y/N's arm and pulled her closer to him. They both wrapped their arms around each other and Y/N just gave a light laugh.

"Do you have a towel in your car?" Tom asked as they got out of the water, their bodies and clothes soaking wet as they stayed there a while ago to watch the sunset.

"Yep. It's on the back. I came prepared." Y/N said as she gave Tom the keys and walked towards her car. Tom could just laugh.

Tom got the towel and wrapped it around Y/N's body and continued to hug her from behind. They decided to stay on the beach a little longer until they dried up. After a few minutes, they then went inside the car with Tom as a driver although Y/N insisted that she would drive.

They went directly to Y/N's apartment that she rented ever since she got her work. Tom parked in the basement of the building. As soon as they got out, Tom locked the cars and gave Y/N back her keys. They walked together and got to an elevator going to her apartment.

"How's your dad and Aria?" Tom asked as Y/N shoved the key on the doorknob.

"They are doing great actually," Y/N answered. "Aria got a job in New Zealand in tourism. And, will you believe that my dad actually got married a year ago?" Y/N said happily and opened the door.

"Really? I never heard of that." Tom said.

"Because we made it a private wedding so it's only our relatives and Mom Trina's family too," Y/N explained to Tom. "Mom Trina is an amazing woman and I'm glad they got to meet each other."

"Your mom will be happy that your dad is happy," Tom said and Y/N could only smile.

She placed her things down the counter table. "This is my home." She said to Tom who was looking everywhere in the apartment. "It's not that bad." He said.

"Yep. In my room, I get to see the city and the sunset and sunrise too." While Y/N was talking. Tom just kept staring at her, admiring her. He couldn't explain how happy he felt when he finally saw her again. He walked closer to her and wrapped his arms around her from behind. This startled Y/N a bit but she held his arms and leaned her back to his chest.

"How did I get so lucky to have you?" Tom whispered and moved her hair away and gave a peck on her neck.

"Destiny, I guess." She answered and turned around to face him. She saw him looked at her lips and decided to close the gap between them by pressing her lips to his. Tom responded to the kiss and pulled her closer to him. As soon as the kiss became heated, she jumped and wrapped her legs around Tom's waist and he was carrying her. He then walked towards her room and shut the room by kicking his foot at the door while kissing and carrying her.

The ray of light hit Y/N's eyes as soon as she woke up. She felt strong arms around her bare waist and she smiled. She yawned and stretched her legs before she tried to move Tom's arm around her. She could still hear his soft snores beside her. His curls are really showing off when his head was on the pillow. She tried to get up but was stopped when she felt a hand grabbing her wrist and pulling her back to the bed. Strong arms wrapped around her again but this time tighter.

"Tom!" She exclaimed.

"Don't leave me here," Tom mumbled while his eyes were still closed and snuggled his head to her neck which tickled a little.

"Alright, baby," Y/N said and snuggled back at him. "But I have to cook breakfast. It's like almost lunch already."

"That was a long long night." Tom teased and Y/N felt her cheeks heat up as she remembered what happened last night. She slapped Tom's arm playfully who just laughed at her. "Let's do it again," Tom whispered in her ear with a husky voice and attempted to kiss her again but Y/N covered his mouth with her hand.

"Nope, nope. Not happening." Y/N said as she shoved his arms away from her and stood up with the blanket wrapped around her. "You better go and shower, Holland!" She exclaimed as she exited her room.

"Join me, then!"

"Shut it, Thomas!"

"Alright, we're on our way now, mum," Tom said through his phone as he drove in the road. "Love you too. Bye." He ended the call and placed his phone down. His eyes focusing on the road.

"What did she say?" Y/N asked.

"Harrison and Erika are already there and there done preparing." He answered and she just nodded as an answer. He glanced at her and smiled, taking her nearest hand and intertwining their fingers together. Y/N looked at him and smiled back. Tom decided to stop driving for a while which made Y/N confused. He parked the car on the side of the road.

"What's wrong?" Y/N asked, concerned.

"I just..." Tom paused for a while. "I'm just so happy that I got to see you again," Tom said and looked at her deep in her eyes.

Y/N placed a hand on his cheek and smiled. "Me too, Tom." She said.

"I'll take you with me once my vacation is over," Tom said and her eyes widen.

"But I have work—"

"I already talked to your manager and he's fine with it. He's gonna give you a break for a while." Tom said.

"How is that even possible?" She asked and giggled.

"Secret," Tom said and grinned. "I want you to see my work and some of the co-stars want to meet you."

"Seriously?" Y/N asked. "You talked about me to them?"

"Yep." Tom answered, emphasizing the 'p'. "Even the Avenger cast wants to meet you."

"Alright, then. I'll get to see celebrities." Y/N squealed and smiled at him. "At least I get to see my boyfriend work. This is exciting."

Tom placed a hand on her nape and pulled her head closer for him to kiss your forehead and lips.

"I love you, my love." He said. "You are my world and my everything."

Oh, how lucky they were for each other.

"I love you, too, Tom."

Always.

Harry and Meghan will not use HRH titles - palace

Prince Harry and Meghan will no longer use their HRH titles and will not receive public funds for royal duties, Buckingham Palace has announced.

The couple will also no longer formally represent The Queen.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex said they intend to repay £2.4m of taxpayer money for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their UK family home.

The new arrangement comes into effect in spring this year, the palace said.

The statement comes after senior royals held talks on Monday about the future role for the couple, who this month announced they wanted to "step back" as senior royals .

The Queen said following "many months of conversations and more recent discussions" she was "pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family".

"I want to thank them for all their dedicated work across this country, the Commonwealth and beyond, and am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family.

Buckingham Palace said the royal couple understood they were required to step back from royal duties, including official military appointments.

The palace added that they would continue to maintain their private patronages and associations.

"While they can no longer formally represent the Queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty," the statement added.

The palace said it would not comment on what security arrangements would be in place for the royal couple.

The announcement marks the conclusion of talks about the couple's future with senior members of the family and royal aides.

Last year, they both spoke about the difficulties of royal life and media attention in recent months.

The duke said he feared his wife would fall victim to "the same powerful forces" that led to his mother's death .

Unanswered Questions'

BBC royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell said questions remain unanswered from the statement, including what the couple's tax and immigration status will be in the UK and Canada.

Our correspondent said royal officials had not given a clear answer about whether Meghan still intended to gain British citizenship, which would entail her spending a certain amount of time in the UK.

He added: "I think they are feeling their way into this as much as anyone else is" though the couple had achieved their primary goal of being able to live at least part of the time in North America.

Duncan Larcombe, former royal editor of the Sun and author of Prince Harry: The Inside Story, said a "scaled down Royal Family" had been "on the cards for some time".

"He is not going to be able to turn off that global fame. He still has an important role to play within the institution, that's probably why these discussions have dragged on a little bit longer than expected," he said.

Diary of a Junebug

We’re starting a soup kitchen! 

This week, we’re taking a trip down to Glassenwick. Ally-Nicole and the sorority are helping out with the grand opening of Charity’s soup kitchen Ladles of Love.

Now that I think about it, this is probably the closest to a full on sorority reunion since it disbanded four years ago. I can’t remember exactly how many how big the sorority was at its peak but about twelve or so of us came to help Charity with her project.

It’s great to see all of us together again after all this time! It feels like forever since I’ve seen most of the old gang so it’s great catching up with them!

But to say that it felt like the sorority days wouldn’t be exactly truthful - and not in a bad way. While I had a lot of good memories with the sorority, it eventually got to the point where the drama began to weigh it down, which is why Ally-Nicole disbanded it when things got too out of control.

The best thing about this reunion is that we’ve all moved on. There’s no sorority drama dragging us down, none of those same problems affecting us back in college. Basically we’ve grown a lot in these past four years so it’s sort of like we’re different people now. 

I haven’t seen some of them in so long that at first it felt like we were strangers. For some it felt like no time has passed at all and for others, we’re in different worlds and yet that connection’s still there.

First there’s Charity, the one behind Ladles of Love. She didn’t have the best upbringing growing up and her relationship with her adoptive parents is nonexistent - to put it nicely. After graduating college, she broke away from them to make a name for herself, taking part in projects like building homes, bringing medical supplies and food to impoverished places, and volunteering at hospitals and clinics. 

I have to say, she’s grown a lot during her sorority days. I’m proud of her and her accomplishments! Helping her with the grand opening was a lot of fun and I know it’ll be successful!

I was surprised when Meghan showed up. She left the sorority months before it disbanded and we lost touch with her and her sister Emmi, who left around the same time. Meghan achieved her dream of becoming a famous ballerina, touring all around the world. When she heard about Charity and Ladles of Love, she rearranged her schedule so she could come down to Glassenwick to help out as she wasn’t too far from there. And since she was performing at Tuckerhill, which is about ten minutes away, she got us tickets to see the show, which was great!

Honestly I never thought I’d see Meghan again, especially after Emmi left the university. Emmi was very sweet and shy, a stark contrast to Meghan in terms of personality and appearance. I didn’t get to know her as well as she didn’t stay for very long but like Meghan she aspired to be a ballerina. She left school because she felt that college wasn’t for her and wanted to try out other things. Meghan keeps in touch with her infrequently as Emmi is constantly moving around but last she heard, Emmi’s doing fine, so that’s good.

Next up are Samantha and Ivy, the newlyweds! Well, actually it’s been almost a year since they married. Still, it’s great to see them again and they’re just as cute as ever! I remember helping Ivy with her first date on the pier. And from there began the ongoing story of Samantha and Ivy. They married last year on a beautiful July afternoon, surrounded by cherry blossoms, which was the theme of their wedding.

Star Kesselman is a notable member. We actually live a few blocks away in Wizpire so we see each other a lot. Star used to be a teen pop sensation when she made her debut on Pop Talent. She was huge back in the day, releasing hits all over the world, touring and performing day and night - all that glamorous Hollywood stuff. Fortunately she stayed true to herself and refused to be blinded by fame - though I think a lot of it has to do with her upbringing, specifically the circumstances following her family’s disappearance. (That’s a story for another day).

Anyway, she chose to take a break after finishing high school. For a while she was on the fence about returning to music after college. Then she fell in love with archaeology so that’s what she does now. In fact, most of the fossil exhibition in the Wizpire Museum was contributed by her! I love seeing her get excited about fossils and other buried treasures. Star is definitely someone you want to tag along when you’re looking for fossils because she pretty much knows everything there is to know about this kind of stuff.

Bethany was another pleasant surprise. She almost couldn’t make it because she was out at a convention in Seaton Lake. There were some last minute changes so Bethany’s presentation was pushed to an earlier date, so she could leave earlier. And because she has an extra day and she’ll be passing by Glassenwick, Bethany decided to stop by after the grand opening. She couldn’t stay long unfortunately as she had other commitments the next several days so it was nice that she stopped by. I’d recognize that sunhat anywhere!

Harper was another one who I didn’t expect to drop by as she’s all the way in Peace Coast Island. She’s the owner of Summer Sweets, a popular bakery on the boardwalk. There’s always a long line where the wait’s at least ninety minutes but trust me, it’s definitely worth it! I’ve only visited her like twice on the island since Summer Sweets opened because the boardwalk’s always so busy. To celebrate the grand opening of Ladles of Love, Harper brought boxes of pastries, all made from scratch! She’s an amazing baker so it’s no surprise that she’s living out her dream life! If you want to stop by Summer Sweets, I definitely recommend the macarons and cannolis!

To add to the celebration, Mia filmed the whole thing. Mia runs a popular travel vlog called Mia’s Suitcase and she has been spending a lot of time at Glassenwick helping Charity out so she’s got a lot of footage for the vlog. She’s doing it in sort of a documentary style, which is an exciting challenge for her as she never did anything like this before. I’m not the type who’s comfortable being in front of the camera all the time but I’m more than happy to be a part of a vlog! It was a lot of fun seeing Mia film everything, giving it a family home movie kind of feeling.

It’s so great having most of the old gang back together for this special event! Some of the campers also tagged along and soon it felt like they were part of the group too! Definitely making another trip to Glassenwick in the future!

It’s safe to say Meghan Markle is no ordinary royal girlfriend. She’s an American divorcée and the daughter of a yoga teacher. She’s also a UN Advocate for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women and an ardent philanthropist. She’s friends with Serena Williams (‘Her personality just shines,’ says the tennis player) and has refused to give up her day job on US show Suits. Until last year, she ran a lifestyle blog, the Tig, in her spare time. She is, in short, the type of woman who makes you like Harry more, just for being with her.

She’s also the sort of woman who seems not to care how a royal girlfriend should behave. Last month, when she posed on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine to finally break her silence on her relationship with the prince, she proclaimed, ‘We’re two people who are really happy and in love. Personally, I love a good love story.’

Compare that to Kate Middleton, who most of the British public hadn’t heard speak until her engagement interview on ITV with Prince William in 2010. Or Harry’s ex Cressida Bonas, who split with the prince a after two years, amid rumours she was struggling to cope with the pressures of being girlfriend to the spare heir.

Then, last week, Harry and Meghan finally made their public debut at the Invictus Games in Toronto, almost a year after news broke that they were quietly dating. Her choice of outfit? “We are campaigning that women should inherit titles, so instead of sons inheriting over daughters, it is the first-born that inherits, meaning that there should be an equal number of men and women in the House of Lords.

“We think it is absolutely appalling that the government is making companies publish lists of women on boards and they are highlighting gender pay gaps and they are telling ethic communities that women are better – which are all very admirable things, but at the same time, there is a group of women who are systemically discriminated against on their gender and are not allowed to stand for election to our upper house, just because they’re girls.”

    Right on time, I’m impressed.

She doesn’t get out of her car right away, so I give her a second but then realize maybe she’s not exiting the vehicle because I have the key to the house and she has nowhere to go.

Wanting to make a good impression and seem approachable since I’m the property manager, I run my hand through my hair and adjust my jeans. I’m not wearing any fancy shit, but at least I don’t have holes in or paint stains on my clothes. I hop off my front porch and make my way toward her car, slowly, not wanting to scare her.

There is muffling coming from her car, voices I can’t quite hear, but I get the idea she’s finishing up a conversation, so I slow my pace drastically. That’s when I see her tilt her head down and look at me. From the reflection of the light off her windows, I can’t make out her features. I can only see a silhouette.

I lift a friendly hand in her direction to let her know I come in peace and make my way to her driveway. There is no wave back, but I do hear the telltale sound of her opening her car door. She steps out and when I round the vehicle, I catch the sun off her driver’s side window, temporarily blinding me.

Blinking my eyes a few times to calm my retinas, I bring her into focus.

“Aaron . . .”

Every hair on my body sticks straight up and my body goes still from that voice, that unmistakably sultry voice.

When she finally comes into view, I am met with a pair of hazel eyes I haven’t been able to get out of my head since the day she left town for bigger and better things.

“Amelia.” I clear my throat and take a step forward. “Wow, I uh . . .” Tongue-tied, that’s exactly what I am right now. “Didn’t expect to see you get out of that car.” I laugh nervously while I pull on the back of my neck, trying to comprehend what’s going on. I point with my thumb toward the house and ask, “You’re the new tenant?”

She nods and looks me over, taking her time with her perusal, her eyes burning a hole right through my clothes like they used to. When her eyes meet mine again, she asks, “You’re the property manager?”

I nod and swallow hard. “And neighbor.”

She presses her lips together, thinning them out. “What are the chances?” She laughs nervously.

“Yeah, especially since I thought your life was in the city.” I didn’t mean for that to come out rude, but it did. Gentling my voice, I ask, “What brings you back home?”

Staring at the ground, clutching her purse to her side, she says, “My dad. He’s, uh, not doing well.” Duh, Mrs. Ferguson mentioned something like that. I’m so damn overwhelmed and shocked right now though, that entire conversation I had with Mrs. Ferguson is not registering in my mind.

“Oh no.” My brow pinches together in concern. “What happened?”

She waves me off. “Nothing you need to worry about.” And just like that she shuts me down. Honestly, I’m surprised she said that much to me after how we ended things between us.

Yes, there was an us, a perfectly beautiful, love-filled us. Amelia Santos was the best thing to ever happen to me, and yet, she was also the worst. During a time where my heart broke from every uncaring glance from my mom, Amelia resurrected me from the ashes I would have otherwise drowned in. She was my rock, the one solid feature in my life.

She was also my downfall.

She was going places, and I wasn’t. She had opportunity, and I had none. She wanted me to move with her, and I couldn’t, but no way in hell would I hold her back. I barely made it out of my mom’s house. There were many days when I tried hard to earn a buck so I could find a place to live other than the homeless shelter where I spent many lonely nights. On Not-At-All-Sloppy Seconds     Now that you know what are my all-time favorite literary offerings, I'll fill you in on what is my all-time second-favorite literary work--and keep in mind when you get wind of same, as you did when you got wind of all my all-time favorites, that I, as I've said before, am and throughout my adult life have been a card-carrying geek a la Meghan McCain. My all-time second-most-cherished literary work is...again, a tie, here between that bitchin'-hot-blonde Goldfinger chick Shirley Eaton's personal/professional memoir Golden Girl and the Playboy Magazine darling Vikki LaMotta's ("with" Thomas Hauser) memoir Knockout!: The Sexy, Violent, Extraordinary Life of Vikki LaMotta.               I should say here that, in coming to said decision concerning these books, there was, as always when compiling these rankings, a hell of a lot that I had to overcome. In the case of Eaton's tome there was at first my deep and long-standing resentment of aesthetes grabbing to their bosoms and swooning over anything and everything British, of those who (so they profess) admire Quality--whatever that is--gushing and cooing over every single solitary scrap the Brits come up with. Yet after careful reflection I've come to fully realize that my admiration of--indeed, my love for--Golden Girl transcends the usual if-it's-British-it-must-be-good dogma. In the case of LaMotta's book there was at first the suspicion that my intensely strong favoring of it was based not so much on the merit of the tome itself but on the circumstances surrounding it--the aforementioned tome was never, ever the subject of any politically-correct negative reaction or, indeed, any reaction at all, thus, for me, it had approval; LaMotta herself had no genuine professional cachet, her sole claims to fame being 1) she was Playboy Magazine's first middle-aged pictorial and 2) the Playboy Magazine issue in which she appeared was and to this day remains said publication's highest seller among women, the said facts concerning her giving her, to me, a fiercely enticing air of independence and individuality. Yet upon careful pondering I've come to the full realization that I dig LaMotta's tome because of the book itself, not because of any external facets of that tome or of its author.               Having covered all that, I shall now detail just why the aforementioned books rate so highly with me.                 .Neither of their authors, at any time in their tomes, make any great claims regarding themselves or their books. While Eaton freely bows to the fact that it is her role in Goldfinger that has provided her with cinematic immortality ("I am the girl covered in gold paint in Goldfinger and, in a sense, I always will be...Every week I still receive fan letters from round the globe and although the writers mention the many other film roles I have played, the part they most often refer to is the Jill Masterson cameo in Goldfinger. There clearly is something about that image that has struck a chord with...women as well as men"), never, ever in her tome does she thump her chest, does she indulge in grandstanding concerning the part that, as she herself concedes, put her on the cultural map. And LaMotta, for her part, while she freely recounted the impact that her Playboy Magazine spread had (among other things, one woman wrote to her saying: "Our exercise instructor put a photo of you on the bulletin board as a goal to work toward"; a Niagara Falls high-school senior sent her an invitation to his then-upcoming prom), you easily get the sense that she was sincerely proud of the impact that her pictorial had, that she was genuinely pleased that she inspired others, not just that she dug calling attention to herself (I should say here that I'm referencing LaMotta in the past tense because, alas, she died in 2005).               .The prose style of both books is consistently intelligent and sensitive. No matter where you turn in either tome, you quickly see that both were turned out by women of obvious depth and dimension, by girls of considerable maturity and considerable spirit who know (in LaMotta's case, unfortunately, knew) how to express themselves and are in no sense bimbos. At the end of both books, you feel uplifted by having spent time with fully rounded, fully centered females who, happily, have marvelous insight and marvelous perspective regarding their lives.               .Both of our authors have led greatly individualistic lives. Eaton in her tome unashamedly tells of her decision to retire at 32, making her the youngest celebrity/entertainment adult to do so (she ingratiatingly and intelligently relates her post-showbiz doings, which includes being good buddies with her former co-star's successor as 007, Roger Moore, and his wife Luisa and having built and moving to, with her husband, this glorious French palace, which they called "Rose Grange," which was "the French equivalent to the name of our family house in Hertfordshire 'Rose Barn'"; also: judging by the various contemporary photos of her, including an especially mouth-watering one of her wearing a black leotard, matching fishnet stockings, and in her bare feet, she's still one damned sexy dish) and LaMotta in her own book not only told of the fact that after she did her layout she turned down literally all offers to do films, including a particularly tempting offer from Home Box Office which she wound up saying no to because of the script's excessive (for her) nudity, but disclosed her feelings about aging ("I'm not a fifty-seven-year-old woman with dreams of being thirty again. I'm a fifty-seven-year-old woman trying to act fifty-seven...[L]ook at a baby; any baby. We all start out knowing nothing and we learn") and about Being Recognized ("[W]hen [myself and my admirers are] done, if they smile and say, 'I can't wait to tell my husband I met you' or 'Wait till I tell the guys at the bowling alley,' I feel that both of us have lived a shade better").             And both of our memoirists conclude in grand fashion. Eaton at the conclusion of her tome answers the question of whether of not she'd like to go back into acting by asserting that she'd say: "I'm contemplating two offers at the moment. If they are interesting or fun, I will accept them, as now all my doors are open," And after coming out with this quite humorous saying referencing her world-famous cameo--"James Bond never dies and neither does gold paint!"--her absolute final words are her quoting this rather lovely poem.                                              "There is nothing as sweet as promise,                                     What is to come before it comes.                                           The dream, the idea, is rich with pleasure,                                       It has no end that we can measure."         And LaMotta's absolute final words genuinely melt the heart: "Life is wonderful. I want to live it." The book itself ended with these mega-moving comments from LaMotta's surviving son Harrison: "I'll always miss [LaMotta]...My mother was full of life and she taught me to enjoy life. I love the fact that I never saw her talk down to or disrespect anyone. And even in her seventies, she was still a knockout."               It was Meryl Streep who, upon being awarded for Lifetime Achievement during the Golden Globe Awards telecast, concluded her legendary acceptance speech by quoting "my friend, the dear, departed Princess Lela [Carrie Fisher, of course]": "Take your broken heart, make it into art." Shirley Eaton and Vikki LaMotta both took their hearts, which in their pasts were broken--the former's by her beloved husband lingering death due to cancer, the latter's first by the vicious beatings she was forced to endure at the hands of her father, then, much, much later, by the also-vicious beatings she was forced to endure at the hands of her boxer husband Jake--and turned them into not art but often incisive, frequently touching, always stylish autobiographies. And it is we readers who should fervently thank them for having done so.
