#Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs

i know you've written extensively about the subject and ultimately the conclusion is that we should just stop re-telling snow white, but i just saw a trailer for the newest live-action snow white and i need to know your thoughts

Hello! I have indeed spoken on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs many times on this blog, as it is a major point of (negative) representation - the new live action retelling has already sparked a lot of uproar within the dwarfism community.

"They were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White, but they are still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs [...] You're progressive in one way but you're still making the backwards story of seven dwarfs living in a cave" - Peter Dinklage

This truly is another moment in live action remakes where the audience says "nobody asked for this". Not only are live action remakes often horrendous compared to their animated originals, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs features harmful stereotypes and ableist themes which have had a lasting impact on real life little people. The dwarfism community did not ask for this!

Unless this adaptation were to humanize the seven dwarfs in a way the past ones have failed to, it really is not a worthwhile piece. But it clearly isn't since they've gone with CG animation for the dwarfs - they couldn't have even bothered to cast real life little people! The only Little actor is the voice for Grumpy, Martin Klebba, which after the amount of feedback they received regarding casting real little people is a spit in the face. This decision clearly links them with fantasy "dwarves" instead of real people who had been cast out by the Ugly Laws of their time. No matter how much whimsical smokescreen they add to this film, the creators clearly did not have the dwarfism community in mind.

The dwarfism and disabled community has been able to gain some real traction in recent years but representation still has a far way to go to dilute so much of the dehumanizing pieces out there. Films like The Greatest Showman (2017), Wonka (2023) and Snow White (2025) still gain so much misguided attention. Instead of retelling "classic" ableist pieces we need to be creating new ones that centre real little people!

One of the worst things Disney has ever done was getting rid of The Disney Vault/Theatrical re-releases and replacing them with The "Live Action" Disney remakes.

If you go see the new Snow White and you hit the parts where the movie starts mocking Snow White (really, the original 37 version of the character) for baking pies, remember that in the original 37 film, she was baking pies for her new friends who had shown her the first ounce of kindness that she has experienced in probably ten plus years. She was baking pies so they would let her stay and she wouldn't be murdered (and I think they would've let her stay regardless). She baked pies out of kindness and survival, for her friends, not because she was a weak girly-girl who couldn't do anything for herself, you assholes.

How bout when she makes the poison apple and it drips into a skull, and she says: "Look! Upon the skin, a symbol of what lies within!"

It's fine, it's just the whole theme of the movie

Snow White

An orphaned princess, Snow White was forced to live with her cold-hearted stepmother, the Queen.  Enraged that Snow White's beauty had surpassed her own, The Queen had her Huntsman take the young princess into the woods to kill her.  Unable to follow through with the ghoulish task, the Huntsman released Snow White, telling her of the Queen’s plan and imploring her to run off and hide.  

Snow White came to find herself in the care of seven woodland dwarves and, for a time, she lived happily among them safely secluded in the forest.  Yet the Queen ultimately discovered that Snow White was still alive.  Using her magic, the Queen crept into the woods in the guise of an old hag and tricked Snow White into biting a poison apple. The poison rendered the princess into a deep, death-like sleep.  Outraged by the Queen’s actions, the animals of the forest chase her up a mountain where she falls to her death.    

Snow White’s body was placed in a glass casket and the Dwarves and woodland creatures stood vigil around her. A kindhearted prince happened upon the casket and was heartbroken over the princess’ apparent death.  A gentle kiss goodbye from the prince has the effect of reviving Snow White and all are overjoyed that the fair princess had returned.  

Actress Adriana Caselotti voiced the princess in the 1937 Disney animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Ever since I was little, I’ve had this theory that Dopey from Snow White is actually just a human baby that the dwarfs took in thinking he was simply a “dopey” adult dwarf. Like, he doesn’t have a beard (or hair), he doesn’t have teeth, he doesn’t talk, his dwarven clothes are too big for him, and he has no idea what he’s doing.

One or two of those could make sense, but the only thing he has in common with the dwarfs is his small stature, and even then, his proportions seem different from theirs! That’s no dwarf! That guy is a baby! It’s “Elf” all over again with this dude!

One major mistake people make when looking at Snow White is assuming that they were trying to create a Disney Princess role model for little girls to emulate, when actually they were just trying their darndest to create an animated character that audiences would care about.

When we see pure and innocent Snow White being mistreated by her stepmother and later driven into exile, it's supposed to activate parental instincts that make us want to protect her. It shouldn't matter if she doesn't do anything to save herself, because she shouldn't have to. We're supposed to feel the injustice of it, feel sad and angry that she's treated this way, fear that she's going to come to harm. We're not supposed to want to be her, we're supposed to love her, and want to see her get the love she deserves, so we remain invested for the entire runtime of this 80-minute cartoon that they're afraid audiences won't sit through. That's what mattered to the story while they were making it, so applying Disney Princess expectations is ridiculous.
