This was enshrined in the 1976 Copyright Act, and has largely languished in obscurity since then, though recent years have seen creators of all kinds getting their rights back through termination – the authors of The Babysitters Club and Sweet Valley High Books, Stephen King, and George Clinton, to name a few. The estates of the core team at Marvel Comics, including Stan Lee, just settled a case that might have let them take the rights to all those characters back from Disney:

Copyright termination is a powerful tonic to the bargaining disparities between creative workers. A creative worker who signs a bad contract at the start of their career can – if they choose – tear that contract up 35 years later and demand a better one.

Turning this into a plot-point in The Bezzle is the kind of thing that I love about this series – the ability to take important, obscure, technical aspects of how the world works and turn them into high-stakes technothriller storylines that bring them to the audience they deserve.

It was on one of those drives where Stefon learned about copyright termination. It was 2011, and NPR was doing a story on the 1976 Copyright Act, passed the same year that was on the bottom of the document Chuy forged.

Under the ’76 act, artists acquired a “termination right”— that is, the power to cancel any copyright assignment after thirty-five years, even if they signed a contract promising to sign away their rights forever and a day (or until the copyright ran out, which was nearly the same thing).

Listening to a smart, assured lady law professor from UC Berkeley explaining how this termination thing worked, Stefon got a wild idea. He pulled over and found a stub of a pencil and the back of a parking-ticket envelope and wrote down the professor’s name when it was repeated at the end of the program. The next day he went to the Inglewood Public Library and got a reference librarian to teach him how to look up a UC Berkeley email address and he sent an email to the professor asking how he could terminate his copyright assignment.

He was pretty sure she wasn’t going to answer him, but she did, in less than a day. He got the email on his son’s smartphone and the boy helped him send a reply asking if he could call her. One thing led to another and two weeks later, he’d filed the paperwork with the U.S. Copyright Office, along with a check for one hundred dollars.

Time passed, and Stefon mostly forgot about his paperwork adventure with the Copyright Office, though every now and again he’d remember, think about that hundred dollars, and shake his head. Then, nearly a year later, there it was, in his mailbox: a letter saying that his copyright assignment had been canceled and his copyrights were his again. There was also a copy of a letter that had been sent to Chuy, explaining the same thing.

Stefon knew a lawyer—well, almost a lawyer, an ex–trumpet player who became a paralegal after one time subbing for Sly Stone’s usual guy, and then never getting another gig that good. He invited Jamal over for dinner and cooked his best pot roast and served it with good whiskey and then Jamal agreed to send a letter to Inglewood Jams, informing them that Chuy no longer controlled his copyrights and they had to deal with him direct from now on.

Stefon hand-delivered the letter the next day, wearing his good suit for reasons he couldn’t explain. The receptionist took it without a blink. He waited.

“Thank you,” she said, pointedly, glancing at the door.

“I can wait,” he said.

“For what?” She reminded him of his boy’s girlfriend, a sophomore a year younger than him. Both women projected a fierce message that they were done with everyone’s shit, especially shit from men, especially old men. He chose his words carefully.

“I don’t know, honestly.” He smiled shyly. He was a good-looking man, still. That smile had once beamed out of televisions all over America, from the Soul Train stage. “But ma’am, begging your pardon, that letter is about my music, which you all sell here. You sell a lot of it, and I want to talk that over with whoever is in charge of that business.”

She let down her guard by one minute increment. “You’ll want Mr. Gounder,” she said. “He’s not in today. Give me your phone number, I’ll have him call.”

He did, but Mr. Gounder didn’t call. He called back two days later, and the day after that, and the following Monday, and then he went back to the office. The receptionist who reminded him of his son’s girlfriend gave him a shocked look.

“Hello,” he said, and tried out that shy smile. “I wonder if I might see that Mr. Gounder.”

She grew visibly uncomfortable. “Mr. Gounder isn’t in today,” she lied. “I see,” he said. “Will he be in tomorrow?”

“No,” she said.

“The day after?”

“No.” Softer.

“Is that Mr. Gounder of yours ever coming in?”

She sighed. “Mr. Gounder doesn’t want to speak with you, I’m sorry.”

The smile hadn’t worked, so he switched to the look he used to give his bandmates when they wouldn’t cooperate. “Maybe someone can tell me why?”

A door behind her had been open a crack; now it swung wide and a young man came out. He looked Hispanic, with a sharp fade and flashy sneakers, but he didn’t talk like a club kid or a hood rat—he sounded like a USC law student.

“Sir, if you have a claim you’d like Mr. Gounder to engage with, please have your attorney contact him directly.”

Stefon looked this kid up and down and up, tried and failed to catch the receptionist’s eye, and said, “Maybe I can talk this over with you. Are you someone in charge around here?”

“I’m Xavier Perez. I’m vice president for catalog development here. I don’t deal with legal claims, though. That’s strictly Mr. Gounder’s job. Please have your attorney put your query in writing and Mr. Gounder will be in touch as soon as is feasible.”

“I did have a lawyer write him a letter,” Stefon said. “I gave it to this young woman. Mr. Gounder hasn’t been in touch.”

Perez looked at the receptionist. “Did you receive a letter from this gentleman?”

She nodded, still not meeting Stefon’s eye. “I gave it to Mr. Gounder last week.”

Perez grinned, showing a gold tooth, and then, in his white, white voice, said, “There you have it. I’m sure Mr. Gounder will get back in touch with your counsel soon. Thank you for coming in today, Mr.—”

“Stefon Magner.” Stefon waited a moment, then said, for the first time in many years, “I used to perform under Steve Soul, though.”

Perez nodded briskly. He’d known that. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Magner.” Without waiting for a reply, he disappeared back into his office.

How to Access FCA SGW Vehicle using Launch X431 Tablet?

This article is the instructions on how to unlock FCA SGW gateway on Launch X431 Tablet.

How to Unlock FCA SGW?

1.Which TOPON products are certificated with AutoAuth Gateway?

FCA US has partnered with LAUNCH to certify LAUNCH manufactured diagnostic tools to secure SGW vehicles' access.

Requirements:

Ensure Launch Software Subscription is active (valid software subscription required)

Tools need to connect to the Internet

Users will enter AutoAuth Credentials when prompted on the tool to unlock SGW vehicles

As of August 3, 2022, LAUNCH has 7 devices equipped with the AutoAuth gateway. Among them are: Phoenix Lite 2, Plus, Elite, Pro, Smart, Remote, Max. We will also continue configuring the AutoAuth gateway to Unlock FCA SGW in more releases.

2.How to access the AutoAuth on LAUNCH Diagnostic Tool?

Step 1: When you diagnose FCA models, the following prompt will pop up, please click yes.

Step 2: Log in to your AutoAuth account to unlock it.

NOTE:

*The actual display of diagnostic tools shall prevail

*Once you log into AutoAuth on your TOPDOD tools, your Approved Credentials will be Auto Stored in the Software

3.How to register AutoAuth account?

1)Go to https://webapp.autoauth.com/

2)Click REGISTER

3)Setup AutoAuth User Account – There is no payment until a user registers a service center (shop or technician). You will need to create a unique username. The username must be at least 8 alphanumeric characters starting with a letter. Usernames are lowercase. Once you decide on a username you will enter the other fields including:

First name

Last name

Email address

Password

Password confirmation

Once you accept the terms and conditions, click the “Signup” button.

This will create your account and AutoAuth will send you an email to confirm your email address. You are required to click the link sent in email to confirm your email address. Once this is done, you can then log in to the AutoAuth portal to manage your account at the AutoAuth home page. https://webapp.autoauth.com.

4)To pay for service, first log in to your account. You will see a welcome to AutoAuth message. Click “Service Center Signup/Independent Technician Signup”

You’ll be taken to the Service Center registration form.

Enter a name for your shop. (This can be changed later.)

Enter your username. (This cannot be changed later.)

Enter your password.

Enter your Address, city, state, postal code, and country.

Enter your phone number.

Enter your credit card number.

Enter your expiration date of your card.

Enter the CVV number of your card.

After reading the terms and conditions, check the box that you agree to them.

Check the box at the bottom to confirm you are not a robot.

Click the “Signup” button at the bottom of the page.

NOTE:

*The payment charge by AutoAuth directly, LAUNCH is not involved in any transaction process.

*You will now have “Manage Tools” and “Manage Users” available in your

menu at the left of the page as shown below:

The next step is to register your tool serial numbers.

5) After logging in as the shop owner, select “Manage Tools” from the left menu.

Click the “+ Add Tool” button.

Select the manufacturer of LAUNCH.

Select the model of your tool (Please Choose Others if your tool is not listed).

Enter the serial number for your tool.

Click the “Add Tool” button. You may now see the LAUNCH diagnostic

tool in your list.

Note that a LAUNCH tool serial registered to a shop can be used by all registered shop users. However, a tool serial cannot be used by more than one shop.

After your LAUNCH tools are added to your shop account, they are authorized by AutoAuth to unlock the secure gateway on vehicles. There is no delay after registering your serial numbers.

Done! That's how to unlock FCA SGW on Launch X431 Scanner.

Chapter 14: Separation And Encounter

Balmung sends the now-disbanded group an email telling them to meet with him in the Slums. Notably, he doesn't send it as an administrator but as Balmung of the Azure Sky. He tells them he invited others and that if they arrive, they should come prepared for a battle...

The chapter officially opens with Magi and Kamui finding out their prisoners have escaped. Kamui quickly figures out Zafie freed them and ruefully regrets not deleting her upon seeing her. Magi equally ruefully asks why management wouldn't approve their request to delete her. Kamui answers that it's not because they won't but because they can't. Magi is understandably confused but Kamui says that the twins and Zafie can be tracked easily, deciding to start looking for them in the Net Slums. Since Balmung is no longer employed by the CC, now Kamui is free to abuse her authority as much as she wants against those she discriminates against. Police brutality for all!

Kamui and Magi leave to go on a bug hunt...

Back to the twins! Rena tells Shugo they're probably the first players to break out of jail. Shugo cools her jets by telling her that they are now officially fugitives instead of heroes. Shugo asks where they can stay. Rena suggests logging out but Shugo reminds her that doing so would leave Zafie all alone. Also, logging out now will probably ensure they can never use their characters again. They'll keep fighting as Kite and the Black Rose for as long as possible.

Suddenly, the two are ambushed...by Kamiya. He has the actual balls to try to woo Rena before Shugo kicks him for, you know, selling them and their group the fuck out earlier. In fairness, Kamiya has come up to apologize. He really was just trying to be an asshole, not get the entire group thrown into jail. He sincerely apologizes to the twins...and oversells it to Rena, resulting in a punch from Shugo. Rena has to yell at them to chill, telling them they are known behind their backs as the "Clowns of Class 3-A". Even the shock of this epithet isn't enough to keep them from arguing, causing Rena to Death Glare them apart.

Suddenly, Rena tells Kamiya that Shugo destroyed his PC, apologizing and ordering Shugo to say sorry too. Shugo "apologizes"...and Kamiya, not only ungratefully unconvinced, says he's still mad over the disfigurement, like a baby. Zafie casually says she can fix it and does so...by uppercutting the sumofabitch like she was Goku in a non-serial movie. Kamiya is...fixed:

Well, Kamiya isn't exactly pleased with the results...but fuck him, we're checking on Balmung. He meets with Wiseman to mobilize the members of the Slums. The best way to do this is contact the Master of the Slums. This amuses Wiseman because apparently the Master and Balmung have had bad blood in the past. Balmung clarifies that he acknowledges the Master's skills but he has no idea how to deal with him. Wiseman leaves to mobilize and Balmung gets an email. It's from a mysterious guy who's acquainted enough with him to offer him his help apropos of nothing. Balmung laughs at his audacity and says he will fight on his, and their fallen friend's, behalf. Two other players show up, also acquainted with Balmung from the past and ready to fight with him.

Back to the twins! After repeated ass-beatings, Kamiya's face is back to normal. Finally grateful, he asks the twins if they were released because they were found innocent. They then reveal they broke out...to the guy who ratted on them in the first place. Yeah, not a smart move...The twins at least tell Kamiya not to get involved with them considering they're on the lam. Kamiya responds by offering to join their party. The twins are reluctant but...eh, they let in based on his utter lack of swagger.

At a base somewhere, Shugo and Kamiya keep watch over Rena and Zafie as they sleep. Shugo asks Kamiya if he's been playing the World for a long time, which Kamiya answers in the affirmative. Shugo, realizing Kamiya actually cares about the game as much as him and his sister, sincerely apologizes for fucking up his PC half a story ago. Kamiya accepts it...after all, thanks to Shugo, he gets to see Rena as she sleeps.

The chapter ends with Shugo getting an email. He wakes Rena up to see who it's from. Turns out it's from Mireille...

THOUGHTS

Another great chapter. Didn't expect Kamiya to be redeemed and, to be honest, I absolutely would not let the snitch who got me jailed in my group but whatever, I'm a pissy person. Kamiya's intentions still manage to come off as sincere and watching Balmung mobilize the troops is fun. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the group in the next chapter.

Your name: Azalea Nguyen

Context: You and your roommate who study at a university in Manchester, have to go and meet the new neighbour. Who happens to be none other than Jadon Sancho

First Person POV

"Azalea! Are you ready?" My roommate Theodore (aka Theo), called with annoyance.

"Almost! Let me just finish this last sentence! I'm like ten seconds away from finishing this paper!" I screamed in response.

"Just turn it in now smart bitch. You'll get a good grade anyway." Theo huffed, walking in the room with his arms crossed.

"I don't settle for mediocrity like you." I rolled my eyes.

I rapidly typed my last sentence while the software I was using scanned the document's grammar. When I made the grammar changes required I scanned through my paper quickly, sending it off to my professor in an email.

"You know I really should have decided to live on campus in a residence hall." Theo muttered.

I grabbed my phone and spoke with confusion, "But the residence halls aren't coed. How would we be able to room together?"

Theo sighed, "You're so dense sometimes Lea. The point of living there would be so I don't have to room with you."

I feigned hurt, "I'm really starting to wonder why my parents let me room with you."

"We're childhood best friends. Duhhh." Theo responded, texting away on his phone.

After I cleared my throat he looked up at me and shook his head.

"We're meeting the new neighbour. And I heard he's hot. You should change if you want a chance with him. Otherwise I'll take him myself." Theo smirked.

"Theo don't you have a boyfriend?" I reminded him.

"Uhm nope. We're not official yet. Anyway, can't I just admire a beautiful man when I see one?" Theo defended.

"How could you admire when you haven't even seen him?" I countered.

"Just go change Azalea." Theo ordered.

I shrugged my shoulders and went back into my room. I put my hair down and straightened it a little bit so I had a wavy look going for me. I then grabbed a semi short, red floral summer dress with thin straps. Upon looking at myself I'm the mirror, I pulled the dress down a little as it showed off a little more than I wanted it to. I finished off the look by putting on some white vans and grabbing my bag.

Upon walking out of the room I received a bright smile from Theo.

"Damn. See what a little effort can do to you." Theo complimented.

I chuckled, "We're bringing something over right?"

"I almost forgot. We're bringing scones." Theo said, dashing off to the kitchen.

He returned with a tray of fresh looking scones in his hands.

"Theo did you make fresh scones for the neighbours?" I questioned in shock.

Theo let out a cackle like laugh, "Don't be ridiculous Lea. I bought them from the store this morning. I sprinkled on some sugar just now to make them look homemade. And let me say, I did an amazing job. These scones looking banging."

I laughed at his antics and we made our way down the hall to the new neighbour.

"So what do you know about this guy? He could be a serial killer." I queried with caution.

Theo shrugged his shoulders, "All I know is that he's rich. Like rich rich. People have been coming to his apartment to offer him food all day. I figured we could hop on the bandwagon. I wanted to go earlier but there were a dozen people there."

"So he could be a serial killer?" I repeated.

"That's not out of the realm of possibility, no. But everyone who visits him has returned alive so we should be fine." Theo responded.

"Great." I murmured to myself.

"Oh 607! Right here Azalea." Theo directed.

I tapped on the door with the knocker. He waited patiently for someone to come and answer the door.

"We should probably look at little more excited." I whispered to Theo who immediately straightened up and put a bright smile on his face.

"Good point." He answered.

After about one minute, the door opened to reveal a certain footballer, Jadon Sancho.

"Hello! I'm Jadon." He greeted with a grin.

I nudged Theo to stop staring and he quickly got out of his daze and extended a hand to Jadon.

"Hi! I'm Theo and this is my roommate Azalea. We live over in 619! We just wanted to bring you some baked goods to welcome you to the building!"

Jadon gave Theo a warm hand shake before turning. His eyes stopped on me and we held eye contact for a solid ten seconds.

"So Azalea innit?" He asked.

"Uhm yeah. Hi I'm Azalea." I introduced.

"A beautiful name for a beautiful girl." He complimented.

I blushed a little before thanking him.

"Oh please come in! I'm so sorry everything's messy. I'm still in the unpacking process. Take a seat in the dining room here, I'll be right back." Jadon directed, welcoming us into his home.

Once he was out of earshot I gave Theo a look.

"Theo! Do you not know who that is?" I gritted my teeth.

"Your next boyfriend? Don't deny it, I saw those glances." Theo teased.

"No oh my days Theo! That's Jadon. Jadon Sancho! The footballer!" I sighed.

"You've really lost your marbles Lea." Theo shook his head.

"I seriously thought you of all people would've figured out who he was. You play sports for god's sake!" I groaned.

"I play basketball! You're talking football, two completely different things!" Theo responded.

I got out my phone and looked up a picture of Jadon Sancho on an article. I passed over my phone to Theo who scanned the photo and article.

"See?" I pointed out.

Theo nodded before zooming in on a picture where Jadon was at the beach. He looked at me and raised his eyebrows twice. I grabbed the phone out of his hand and shut it off before scolding him a little.

"We're in his house. You can't do this Theo."

Theo rolled his eyes and went back to smirking. Within a few more minutes, Jadon was back carrying some plates with him.

"Sorry it took a while for me to find these." He apologised sheepishly.

He laid the plates in front of us and again apologised for not being able to provide us with tea. He then sat down and we began a real conversation.

"So Jadon this is a lovely flat you have here. Very modern." Theo grinned.

"Thanks mate! Before moving in I only saw pictures but now that I'm here, I've realised the photos didn't do it justice." Jadon replied.

"Yes lovely place indeed. Now Jadon let me ask you, what do you do for a living?" Theo questioned innocently.

"Oh I work for Manchester United."

"You work for Manchester United?" I repeated, receiving a nod from him.

"What do you for Manchester United? Play football perhaps?" Theo rephrased.

Jadon laughed, "Yeah actually I do. Haven't appeared in a match yet but I'm hoping that'll change once the season starts."

"You think you can get United out of the Europa league?" I quizzed.

Jadon shrugged, "Hope so at least. Football fan are ya?"

I shook my head, "My family are huge football fans, not me. I just know the important stuff."

"So I'm important enough to be remembered then?" He smirked.

"Who said that?" I scoffed.

"You. You knew who I was then said you only remember what's important." He explained.

I rolled my eyes and bit my lip to keep from smiling. It was hard especially with Jadon's daunting, adorable smirk on his face waiting for me to crack.

"So, the scones. Let's tuck in." Jadon suggested.

Theo and Jadon both began eating but Jadon stopped when he saw I hadn't gotten one from the tray.

"You're not eating?" He asked with concern.

"No I'm fine. I just can't let myself eat sugary things. It's the only way I stay fit." I resonated.

It was true. Not all girls could eat whatever they wanted and not gain any weight. I wasn't one of those blessed souls with fast metabolisms.

"You sure? Why not eat one now and come to the gym with me tomorrow to burn it off?" Jadon offered.

"I think my idea of the gym and your idea of the gym are very different. I'm not trying to train for a whole marathon." I joked.

"It'll be fun! You should do it Azalea." Theo encouraged.

"We'll only go for an hour and a half. Plus, you'll be able to eat the scones that you're pushing away. And I uhm wouldn't mind if you gave me a tour of Manchester right after." Jadon suggested.

"Are you asking me on a date?" I mused.

"Maybe I am. Depends on what you say." Jadon smirked.

I laughed, "Okay fine. I'll go."

Jadon grinned but it was Theo who had the brightest smile in the room. He began to get up from his seat before I asked what he was doing.

"Oh I'm heading back. I totally just forgot that I left something in the oven. But you Lea, you should stay here and talk with Jadon about what you're doing tomorrow!" Theo recommended, obviously trying to get us to spend more time together.

"I'll have her back in two hours tops." Jadon informed, acting like a guy who was meeting his girlfriend's older brother for the first time.

Wait? Did I just call myself his girlfriend?

Theo nodded and waved goodbye before leaving. After he was gone, Jadon and I go to talking while eating our scones. He was insanely funny and cute.

"So, you want me to teach you how to make real scones? Not that these store bought ones aren't good but..." Jadon started.

My eyes widened, "You know that these are store bought? How?"

Jadon chuckled, "You know Miss Azalea, I'm actually quite the baker."

"Let's go to the kitchen now shall we?" I asked, holding my hand out for him.

"Quite forward of you aye?" Jadon raised his eyebrows.

"I learned from the worst." I shot back, directing it at Jadon.

Jadon laughed and grabbed my hand as he led me to the kitchen. Now, I ended up staying for way more than two hours because our fiasco resulted in flour and baking powder all over us.

"Jadon! No! You'll ruin my dress!" I screamed.

"That's the point babe!" He exclaimed, picking me up and twirling me.

Let's just say I ended that night a lot happier than I'd been in a while.

What is bus mode Ethernet?

Where did you even find that post buddy. That was so long ago *aide whispers in my ear* what do you mean only one month! December was four years ago!

So this is specifically talking about how wired networks are laid out. Nowadays, when you lay out a network for, say, a datacenter or an office, you lay it out in a star topology, using switches. That looks like this:

A switch is a smart appliance, which means it has an awareness of the network and can make decisions. If computer A decides it wants to talk to computer C, it sends a message down its link tagged with the address of C. The switch sees this packet and goes “ah-ha, I know where C is!” and sends the message down the right line. Notably here, B and D never even know this transaction took place. This is sometimes called point-to-point networking, because messages are only sent to the places they are needed.

Switches are popular nowadays, but there’s a problem: They’re computers. Because a switch is making decisions, potentially very fast decisions, it requires a fast processor. In the 90′s and earlier, such a device could cost an extraordinary amount of money: USD 100 per port was considered an absolute steal in 1997, and the further you go back, the worse it gets. A small office with a dozen computers probably doesn’t want to fork over USD 5000 just to network share sub-megabyte files and get emails.

The solution to this is Bus Networking.

It’s called Bus Networking because all traffic shares the same connections and thus share bandwidth. Y’know, like public transport.

This is a simple Ethernet Bus network. In this situation, if computer A wants to talk to computer C, it still emits a packet tagged with the address for C, but now there’s a difference: B and D can also see this packet coming through, and if they want they could ignore the addressing and read what it contains.

(note: those things on the end of the line represent signal terminators. On a long wire like this a message could bounce back from unterminated ends, interfering with traffic)

That’s not the biggest issue with bus networks though: the real issue is collisions!

If A tries to talk to C, but at the same time B tries to talk to D, two signals cannot travel on a wire at once. They mix up, and no one gets their message across. A collision has occured.

Fortunately for us, some Hawaiian researchers solved this problem in the 70′s when they were setting up radio communications between the Hawaiian Islands, a system called ALOHAnet. Radio has this problem as well: if everyone is broadcasting on one frequency, two people broadcasting can get muddled and now no-one gets to hear what was said. How can you efficiently send messages without collisions when you have no way to coordinate between members? Remember, trying to send a message to say “okay, you go first, then I’ll go” has as much chance of colliding as anything else!

We solve this with the ALOHA protocol, which is loosely as follows:

Pretend you are a computer. If you are already a computer, skip this step.

Send your message.

Listen for any messages from anyone else.

If you hear a message from someone else, then you know there’s been a collision. You can trust that they also heard your message.

Roll a small random number, let’s say between 1 and 6. Wait that much time. Everyone else on the network who wants to transmit does the same.

If you hear a message come through before you can send yours, wait for them to finish before you send.

Try and send when your timer expires and you have an opening

Listen for any messages from anyone else.

If you hear a message from someone else, there’s been another collision. Increase the size of your random number (try doubling the upper bound), roll again, and go back to step 4.

If you successfully transmit, you’re done!

This largely solves the problem. You have a way for all these devices sharing nothing more than a wire to communicate with each other. Make one of those devices a router with access to the network and you’re surfing the information superhighway!

On a not-too-busy network with a handful of users, this works surprisingly well, but it has a problem: as you get more and more active users on one network, the amount of time it takes for everyone to randomly roll the right numbers to transmit gets higher and higher, until the whole network bogs down. There are slight improvements to ALOHA that improve throughput, but you start to run up against mathematical limits pretty fast. With the addition of dedicated transmission slots rather than haphazardly counting down without a care in the world, ALOHA can reach about 35% utilization of a link.

An additional note: at this time, Ethernet didn’t run over CAT-5 like it does now. CAT-5 terminated in RJ-45 is what we usually use nowadays because we want to support 100-1000 megabit per second speeds,

Back in the Bad Old Days, ethernet generally ran over coaxial cable, sometimes called ThinNet, i.e. this shit, which you may recognize if you’ve ever used lab equipment.

Hence, you really could just tap off new lines from this pretty easily, you just had to join two wires and you were off to the races. This was actually preceded by a bigger serial interface, affectionately referred to as ThickNet. Both could run at about 10Mbps maximum, which, once you throw in that 35% utilization? You can see why we needed to move past this. 3.5Mbps was slow for a local network even in the 80′s.

Nowdays, you can buy a brand new switch for a pretty reasonable price, or a used switch for a downright bargain, running at speeds that would have blown the socks off a Cray engineer a couple decades ago. Bus-mode ethernet basically only exists in weird industrial and sensor applications where switches are impractical or unnecessary, plus we have Wi-Fi now. Wi-Fi doesn’t have to deal with the same problems as ALOHA, because it allocates little chunks of frequency and time to every device on the network, keeping most transmissions separate one way or another with careful negotiation.

Bus mode ethernet still works, even with modern networking! If you decided to splice a bunch of modern PC’s together with junction boxes and allocated addresses to them all, they would step in line and roll back to this antique networking technique because it’s all part of the standard.

An incredulous laugh bursts from your lips, your nails cutting crescent moons into the palms of your hands as you try and convince yourself that this isn’t actually happening.

“Do you have alibis for your whereabouts on Monday, June eighth, Saturday, June thirteenth, and Thursday, June eighteenth?” Spencer can see your leg bouncing rapidly under the table, your eyes flying over the pictures and the expression of Emily Prentiss. You seem genuine, but he can’t trust himself to get an accurate read of you anymore.

“I, uhm, I- I wouldn’t know off the top of my head. I keep a planner, I’ll forget things otherwise.” The burst of iron in your mouth is not something you’re unused to, having chewed your cheek so badly that the skin there has broken under your teeth.

“We’ll need to see that.” Emily isn’t sure whether or not she believes that you’re guilty, watching the way you seem to unravel before her. When you look at the crime scene photos, it isn't with any pleasure, but with disgust. Your nose wrinkles a little at the bridge and you keep looking away as the blood from your face starts to drain.

Either you’re a really good actress or you aren’t the unsub.

Emily says as much as she flips through the small teal planner that you’d willingly given them. Due dates for chapters, publishing events, book signings and days for book tours fill most of the pages in your most neat handwriting. Dates you plan to go visit your mother, grocery shop, doctor’s appointments, even plans to go somewhere and write.

Everything is explicitly stated, that way you’re never unsure of what you meant to tell yourself. That is, until around three weeks ago when a handful of days are notated with an ‘S,’ followed by a random doodle. Sometimes it’s a tiny heart drawn absentmindedly while you discuss the plans over the phone, other times it’s a cartoon bunny or a top hat.

Garcia is the first to take notice of it, her fingers faltering in their constant thrum against the keyboard in front of her. She glances out of the side of her glasses, raising her eyebrows suggestively.

“Looks like lonely girl found herself a boo.”

“That makes sense,” JJ says from the chair she’s pulled into Penelope’s office from the bullpen. A pen is stretched between her hands, her posture relaxed into the curve of the stiff, government-issued rolly chair.

All the girls have gathered into the tech analyst’s room while the men take turns interrogating you. Well, all except Spencer. He just stands behind that window watching your every move with eyes like a hawk. “What doesn’t make sense is why she keeps it secret even in her personal planner.”

“Maybe she has a stalker? That could be who is doing all this?”

“Then she wouldn’t keep careful notation of everything else going on in her life. A stalker would follow her every move, not just her romantic interests. Even if he is in love with her.”

“A partner, maybe? Like the days they planned the murders or days they were acted out?”

“None of the days line up with the crimes, save for this one,” Emily leans the book toward the two women with her finger just underneath June fifth, the day Alison Crane was abducted from outside her campus dorm room. It’s the third ‘S’ scribbled into the corner of a day in the entire book.

“And there is nothing else written in relation to this ‘S’ character?” JJ shakes her head, looking for any clues that could be nestled among the loops and curls of your writing. Reid would be better at this, he was the graphology expert among them. So why wasn’t he back here helping?

“Then I guess we better try and get her to talk about it. Meanwhile Garcia, we’ll get Rossi and Reid to head over to her apartment and you can hack into her computer?” Penelope spins the chair, a flash of bright colors and blond hair. She clicks her tongue in response, throwing up a fingers gun and winking.

“Whatever you need me to do, I’m on it like sexy on Derek Morgan stepping out of the shower in a towel.”

After some arguing, and maybe just a little bit of pleading, they manage to convince Reid to join Rossi on a trip to your apartment. He can’t help but feel a little uncomfortable, standing in your living room. Not because he’d been here before, but because he’d never been here before.

The empty mugs that litter every surface, smelling of old coffee and your favorite coffee creamer (he only knows it’s your favorite because you explicitly ask for that creamer at every coffee shop the two of you have ever gone to), is unfamiliar to him. He’s invited you to his apartment at least three times. How come he had never been to yours?

Small pages and notebooks of scribbled ideas and dialogues cover just as many areas as the coffee cups do, your handwriting messy and cramped in every note. It’s almost like you couldn’t get the idea out of your head fast enough.

The bed in your room is meticulously made without a wrinkle in sight, but that could be because of the obvious bed you’ve made yourself along the salmon pink couch that stretches out in front of your TV. A multicolored crochet blanket is thrown haphazardly over the back, a pillow still slightly squished against the arm.

On the coffee table is a half opened laptop, a notebook with red and black ink scribbled in the lines, and a still full cup of coffee. Rossi makes quick work of calling Garcia and helping her get patched into your computer. It’s strange, watching her move the mouse on your screen from miles away.

Reid never stops moving, walking the length of your studio apartment with his eyes peeled for any kind of information he could find. It’s obvious that you spend most of your time in the main room, which houses the kitchen, a small dining area, and the living room. A door leading into your room branches off to a small bathroom which is just as disorganized as everything else in your house.

Hair products, skin washes, and all kinds of makeup are scattered across the sink and back of your toilet. It’s funny because every time he’s ever met up with you, you’re bare faced and your hair is still drying from the shower you took before leaving your house. The tube of lipstick he picks up makes him think he doesn’t really know you at all.

On the nightstand in your room is a bottle of water with the label ripped off and the two Rossi books you’d bought that fateful day in the bookstore. The label from the water bottle is stuck between the middle pages of one of the books. The passages in question don’t lend anything to connecting you as a homicidal maniac, let alone a serial killer.

Back in the living room, Garcia is snooping through every aspect of your computer.

“I don’t know whether or not the be freaked out by her web history. There’s a lot of murder-y questions here. ‘Signs of a post mortem amputation,’ ‘How much blood can you lose and still live?,’ ‘Most brutal ways to be killed.’ It’s creepy.” Rossi is flicking through the notebook from the table, his eyes squinted as he tried to make sense of the abbreviations and scribblings of another writer.

“She writes crime novels so it isn’t entirely strange for her to be looking at those types of things.” Thankfully, the defense of your web search history comes from the older man who looks up as Garcia delves deeper and deeper. Spencer had thought it first, but hadn’t said anything to avoid suspicion. He’s smart enough to know that the truth has to come out eventually, but he wants to be sure of your innocence (or guilt, he reminds himself a bit glumly) before he reveals your link to him.

“I’m not seeing anything she could be using to contact a partner unless her partner is one of the publishing people she’s constantly messaging via email.” At this Spencer stops, leaning against the back of the couch with his weight resting on the heels of his hands. The stance appears relaxed. He is anything but.

“Why do we assume she has a partner?” Reid asks, impatiently pushing a stray curl away from his face. Rossi glances at him curiously, otherwise undistracted from the shake the movement gives the couch.

“Oh, Prentiss, JJ, and I were looking through her little teal book earlier and the only thing not explicitly stated was just the letter ‘S.’ It’s why they came back to interrogate and they sent you guys to her house. I thought they told you.”

Spencer wants to beat his head against the wall.

“That isn’t a lead, Garcia. You have to tell them that ‘S’ isn’t her partner.” The mouse on the computer screen falters, several saved documents for different rough drafts of books or drabbles are pulled up the way you might have papers scattered about in front of you.

“What is it? Do you know who ‘S’ is?” Rossi is turned sideways on the couch, looking over the back and up at the distressed man in front of him. It doesn’t take him long to connect the dots when they make eye contact. Penelope impatiently whines over the phone.

“I’m ‘S,’ I’ve been seeing her for the last three weeks. I’m sure if you tell me the dates then every single one of them will be days that we’ve had plans together.”

“I’m sorry, what?!” Before anyone has the chance to say anything else, the door to Garcia’s office opens and a second voice filters through Rossi’s phone speaker. It’s JJ.

“Let Reid and Rossi know there’s just been another murder.”

This time it’s a fifteen year old girl. Her hair is black and wet, her lips are as blue as the sky, and she’s naked. Water droplets from her skin have soaked into the sheet of paper that was layed over her chest. The bathtub she’s in is completely empty, but it doesn’t take a genius to know that she was drowned there. The bruises on her shoulders from the force the unsub used to pin her down are dark against the contrast of her already pale skin.

...The man leaned over the tub, his eyes squinted in thought and his lips skewed a little to the side. Ryder stayed focused on the crime scene, for the most part. But even detectives of her caliber, and higher, could easily get lost in the eyes that look up at her from beneath long golden-brown lashes.

“Detective?” She blinks the distraction away, looking back at the girl, her black hair wet and spiraling like the snakes on Medusa’s head against the ivory siding of the drained tub. Ryder can’t help but wish the girl had been lucky enough to turn her killer to stone. Maybe it would have saved her.

“Agent.” She crosses her arms, looking anywhere but at the man across from her, pretending to look for any useful clues. Ryder had gotten to the crime scene fourty-five minutes before the pair of FBI Agents had walked in. The man, who had introduced himself as Supervisory Special Agent Matthew Gray, had decided to join her in the second floor bathroom. His partner, a woman named Katherine Swift, had taken to looking for clues through the rest of the house.

Agent Gray is beautiful. It’s the only adjective that seems to stick to him with certainty, every other aspect of his personality just as elusive as the exact color of those eyes. Even as short as his hair is, the golden brown tendrils are unkempt and curl every which way. Ryder has to force her hand to stay at her side and not reach up to smooth an alfalfa that does nothing for the serious expression on his face.

She keeps imagining what it would feel like if he reached out to kiss her, curling his fingers into her hair and bringing her unworthy lips up to meet his. He’s tall so she would probably have to stretch a little, but she wouldn’t mind. Not when his hands are tangled in her hair and he’s giving her the kiss she’s been silently begging for since the moment he flashed that crooked grin at her.

The imagination is so vivid that she jumps when her own partner, Detective Russo, comes around the corner of the hallway and straight into the bathroom...

The paper crinkles in the evidence bag as Morgan places it on the table, trying to ignore the daggers being glared into him on the other side of the mirror.

Nobody on the team had been very happy with Spencer when they heard the news about your relationship, Hotch had nearly snatched him by the scruff of his neck when he made to go into the interrogation room. But after several minutes of thoroughly explaining himself, Hotch had sent Morgan in. To say Spencer was infuriated was an understatement.

“Do you know what this is, (Y/N)?” You look down at it, twisting the evidence bag so that you could read the Times New Roman font you always wrote in when writing in Microsoft Word. The words cover the front and back of the copy paper, but you don’t have to read it through all the way before you know what it is.

“It’s a page from my newest book.” The bag scratches against the tabletop as you push it away from you, crossing your arms over your chest. Your face is stoplight red with embarrassment at the thought of Spencer reading this page, mostly because you had pulled so heavily from your own thoughts when first meeting Spencer to write Ryder and Gray’s first meeting. You created Matthew Gray to write about Spencer Reid in a way that felt less ‘high school diary entry.’

“More specifically, it’s from the book you just started working on about a month ago. The one that only you and your agent have access to.” Finally, Morgan sits. Before, he’d just been pacing around you the way a lioness might stalk around her prey before she launches an attack. It made you uneasy, but that was the whole point, wasn’t it?

“Do you know where we found it, (Y/N)?” His muscles bulge against his shirtsleeves when he leans them up on the table. Derek Morgan is a very attractive man, you’ll give him that, but if making you uneasy and putting you in the room with a attractive man to fluster you was their strategy then they should have sent in Spencer.

“My computer.”

“We found it on the body of a dead girl.” Another picture joins the ones already shuffled around the table. You can barely look at it, nausea and tears building in your throat at the sight of another person dying the same way you’d written in a story. When you don’t respond, Morgan continues.

“‘She was found at the bottom of an empty bathtub, a pale leg hooked over the edge of the porcelain siding, and her arms pinned to her sides in death. Bruises discolored the skin at her shoulders, and Ryder knew at first glance that her cause of death would be asphyxiation by drowning.’” He drops the paper back to the table, having picked it up to read the passage from the end of the page.

“That’s wrong,” You say, leaning back over the table to look at the paper again. Derek looks down, like the words might have changed in the moment he looked away, but the text stays exactly the same as before.

“That’s exactly what is written here.” You shake your head, pulling the bag back to you and wrinkling your forehead in thought.

“I don’t doubt that is what you read, Agent Morgan,” Your eyes fly over the page, reading the end of the excerpt with overwhelming relief. The bag sticks a little to the pad of your index finger as you tap over the paragraph in question. “But I rewrote this scene only two nights ago. It’s on my computer, I’m sure your tech analyst can confirm my claim. This girl, Bella, she doesn’t die from drowning anymore. Her hands are tied above her head to the faucet and she’s strangled. I couldn’t decide if I wanted it to be by her sister or her girlfriend.”

JJ rushes back to Penelope’s office, on a mission to confirm your statement just as you had suggested. Meanwhile, Morgan’s mind is rushing to figure out the mess he is currently sat in. You lean back in your chair now, unsure if the dizziness you feel is from lack of food or the sudden realization that they couldn’t pin this to you anymore.

“I’m not your bad guy. If I was doing this to prove to my mother that my writing is good, that I chose the right career, as your profile says, I wouldn’t change the scene in my book and not change the murder.” In Morgan’s earpiece, Hotch tells him that you were telling the truth about editing the scene two nights ago.

“Unless you planned it to throw us off track. We know about your relationship with Spencer, you’ve probably found out all kinds of things to do to keep us from catching you.”

You clench your teeth, straightening into your chair and pinning Derek down with a look you’d learned from your mother. It makes him think of his mom, your eyes narrowed and your gaze so cold that it could cause frostbite. He watches curiosily as you tilt your chin up a little, trying to hide the pricks behind your eyes and the wobble of your lip. Derek notices them, the entire team notices. They’re trained to notice.

“I want a lawyer.” You say simply, you voice is sharp and quiet but it does the job of slicing through the tension already building in the room.

“Come on, you don’t need a lawyer.”

“That’s where you’re wrong again, Agent Morgan. I do need a lawyer. Because even though I have full-heartedly trusted the justice system since I was in diapers, and even though I came to these offices willing to help your team in any way that I could, you are still trying to use me as a scapegoat instead of actually doing your fucking job and finding the bastard who is killing people in my name.

“A study from criminal law bulletin says that 10,000 people are wrongfully convicted of serious crimes every year. One in every twenty-five people sentenced to death are innocent, Agent Morgan. Just since 1973, more than 160 people were exonerated from the death penalty. That’s not even counting the people who were killed. But you sure as hell aren’t about to make me apart of that statistic because you want to waste your time trying to piece an investigation around me. That’s not how you’re supposed to do your job. So until you can remember how to do it correctly, I do need a lawyer. Thank you.”

By the time you finish you’ve leaned over the table, your index finger jammed into the wood to make your point. It feels like your chest is on fire as you slam back into your seat and cross your arms, determined to keep your silence for the rest of the time you were forced to sit here.

Everyone on the opposite side of the mirror is stunned into silence, their eyes focused on you even as Derek gathers all the things from the desk and walks out looking a little flustered himself. If Spencer was totally honest, your outburst was actually kind of hot. He has to remind himself that you may have killed eight people in cold blood.

Your lawyer makes it to the BAU in record time, his red hair expertly gelled back from his face. His icy blue eyes only cracking when he sees you sitting by yourself in the interrogation room. Spencer can tell by the way that he lowers himself on the balls of his feet to talk to you, reaching out to touch the hand that sits on your thigh, that he knows you personally. He likes you, actually. Spencer tried to tell himself that it doesn’t make him glad when you pull your hand out of his and awkwardly pat his arm.

He’s been lying to himself a lot today.

Hotch is the one to go back in the room, he was the best at dealing with lawyers. Unfortunately his best wasn’t enough to keep you in custody and soon your lawyer, who Spencer learned was named Jeremy, was walking you out of the room for the first time in six hours.

Your back cracks when you stand, your shoulders rolling back to try and ease some of the stress you’d been holding there since this morning. The sound of the door swinging open for you is almost heavenly, the feel of the air outside of the room is damn near enough to make you cry.

When you look to the side, ready to leave out the second door that leads into the hallway and away from this mess, you meet eyes with the only profiler of the BAU that you hadn’t seen that day. Spencer looks back at you with an expression that you find hard to put into words.

He almost looks sorry, the regret evident in the slight widening of his eyes, but at the same time his chin is tilted up like he is facing an enemy he has vowed to take down no matter the cost. His shoulders are squared, but his arms are uncrossed and his palms are open.

And even though you knew you wouldn’t be there without him knowing, the reassurance that Spencer knew and even suspected you is like a blow to the chest and stomach. It robs you of air, causing you to stumble.

Jeremy reaches to steady you. You shake him off, pulling your eyes from the young doctor and focusing all of your attention on the door knob.

“I’m fine, Jeremy.” Your tone of voice is more harsh than you intended but you’re still struggling to collect oxygen, even when you slide into your car by yourself, it feels like you can’t get enough air. The walk from the BAU offices to the parking lot had passed in a blur. Jeremy’s talk about staying at home and keeping your head low had gone by even faster, and now that you have time to truly be by yourself, everything hits like a ton of bricks thrown at you from a speeding train.

In the midst of your panic attack, gasping for air into the palms of your shaking hands, questioning everything about yourself and your career, you don’t register the shuffle of movement in your backseat. You’re so deep in your mind that you almost don’t notice the cool press of a gun barrel against the back of your neck until a familiar voice lifts your head from your hands.

“Drive.”
