3/14/24.
lightheaded are a 3-piece band from Long Branch, New Jersey. Their cassette release last year on Slumberland. It received a fair amount of attention and rightfully so. It's great indie pop with a 60s flair. Now, the band is set to release a full LP on vinyl no less.
In an interview in 2021, the band described their influences as such:
We love The Pastels, mark that down first. Probably the reason we started the band. They set the template. The Feelies, New Jersey legends. Got to mention them. Stephen used to live in the same town as Stan! Dwight Twilley and Phil Seymour, we love all the sorta one-off power pop bands! Felt are very special to us. Belle and Sebastian. The Clientele’s first couple records... The Go-Betweens never missed... just cut us off now, we’ll take up the whole interview.
I still really feel there is a clear Aislers Set/Tele Novella sound going on here.

This is a quiet place these days, but if any of you are still here - PAINS will be playing our first LP in its entirety in Feb/Mar 2025 in Spain + Portugal.
Tickets go on sale Tuesday, August 20: https://bnds.us/gl7in0
Peggy Wang, Kurt Feldman, Christoph Hochheim, and I will be on stage together for the first time in a *very* long time (2012?). Alex is dealing with some (very good) personal stuff this year, so Eddy Marshall (he also plays with me in The Natvral) will fill in on bass guitar.
Spain has always been special to us. It's a place that welcomed our music with an enthusiasm that blew our mind when we first came in 2009 - and has allowed us to come back for many incredible concerts (and cañas and calimochos) over the years.
We hope to see you there!
x Kip

Reds, Pinks, & Purples - Fuchsia Dell (from Build Love ep)
I just love when Glenn Donaldson (Reds, Pinks, and Purples) does an instrumental song that you feel could have a melancholic and wordless short film to accompany it. That his song would serve as a great score, but you haven’t seen that film yet (but yet you already know how it would make you feel). Sigh!

Sit down gig in an old cinema with San Francisco's Chime School.   Been looking forward to this gig for a while as support came from Silkcuts and Lande Hekt so an evening of indie pop.  Chime School have a ton of pop tunes and they rolled them out tune after tune, so difficult to choose ones to share.  At times they reminded me of The Pains of being Pure at Heart and other times I got a hint of Choo Choo Train if anyone remembers them aswell as the classic C86/Sarah Vibe.  That sound will always be with us.

6/26/24.
Slumberland Records. They've been on another roll (when aren't they on a roll) with new releases coming from Birdie (great band with members from Dolly Mixture and East Village) and Chime School. I'm still sifting through the lightheaded, Neutrals and Lunchbox bundle I just received. Now, I've run across some of their older releases on amazing markdown (Bricolage, Summer Cats and Sarandon).
Sarandon (London) was active during the early 2000s and have a sound reminiscent of The Fall and Wire while still retaining pop sensibilities of bands like Josef K. I can't imagine that Allan McNaughton (Giant Haystacks and the aforementioned Neutrals) didn't enjoy Sarandon's output.
This 10" is aptly named "Kill Twee Pop!" I can confidently say after listening to a couple of Sarandon's releases, that this is a sincere sentiment.

three cheers!, the umbrellas (2023).
bay area jangle pop wizards the umbrellas return with another c86-inspired pop tune. at three minutes, it's satisfyingly catchy and and well-produced. matt ferrera's voice rumbles just like collins/pastel and the song's galloping drums and frenetic guitar agree. indiepop's inherently reiterative nature is best reflected here in what is very clearly a great tune that declines to reinvent the wheel. with how tempered it is, i wonder if the group has more energy hidden away. could i be wishing for a song as enormous and theatrical as 'therese'? of course. but i feel i'll be as happy as i can be if the 'paint a rainbow' sound of 'write it in the sky' is present on their upcoming album. i wouldn't mind if it were a bit noisier, too.
