SIV-B second stage of the Saturn IB booster that took the Skylab III crew of Bean, Garriott and Lousma into orbit on this day in 1973.
This stage is the same (with minor differences) as the third stage of the Saturn V. On moon missions, the Lunar Module would ride inside the adapter section, inside the open petals. On Skylab flights, the adapter was empty.

From Apollo to Commercial Crew: Get To Know Historic Launch Pad 39A
Originally built for the massive Saturn V rockets that sent astronauts on Apollo missions to the Moon, Launch Complex 39A also served as one of the two launch pads used by the space shuttle. Between Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz and the space shuttle, this launch pad has been the starting point for many of the nation’s most challenging and inspiring missions.
Tumblr media
In 2014, SpaceX signed a property agreement with NASA for use and operation of the launch complex for 20 years, and the company modified the facility to prepare for the processing and launch of its Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets.
Tumblr media
The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying the company’s Crew Dragon on its Demo-2 flight test to the International Space Station with NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley will lift off from the same historic site where astronauts first launched to the moon. Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida is also the site of dozens of space shuttle launches that helped build the orbital laboratory.
Launch Complexes 39A and B were constructed in the 1960s. Both launch pads have a long history of supporting launches for the Apollo and Space Shuttle Programs. Launch Pad 39A was the launch site for 11 Saturn V Apollo missions, including Apollo 11, the first Moon landing. The pad also was the launch site for 82 space shuttle missions, including STS-1, the first shuttle launch, the STS-125 final servicing mission for the Hubble Space Telescope, and STS-135, the final shuttle mission.
Tumblr media
After the space shuttle was retired in 2011, we began the process to transform Kennedy Space Center from a historically government-only launch facility into a multi-user spaceport for both government and commercial use. On April 14, 2014, the agency signed a property agreement with SpaceX for use of the launch site for the next 20 years.
Tumblr media
SpaceX upgraded and modified the launch pad to support its Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets. The company also built a horizontal processing hangar at the base of the pad to perform final vehicle integration prior to flight. The first SpaceX launch from the pad was the company’s 10th commercial resupply services (CRS-10) mission for us. A SpaceX Falcon 9 launched a Dragon cargo spacecraft on CRS-10 on Feb. 19, 2017. The Dragon delivered about 5,500 pounds of supplies to the space station, including the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) III instrument to further study ozone in the Earth’s atmosphere. Combined with SpaceX, we’ve launched more than 100 missions from Pad 39A.
Tumblr media
Because of our partnership with SpaceX within our agency’s Commercial Crew Program, Launch Complex 39A will once again be the site of crewed missions to the space station.
🚀 TUNE IN starting at 12:15 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, May 27 as NASA and SpaceX launch astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley to the International Space Station aboard the Crew Dragon spacecraft: www.nasa.gov.live.

Skylab Missions: Skylab 3
Tumblr media
*
Tumblr media
"These three men are the prime crewmen for the Skylab 3 mission. Pictured in the one-G trainer Multiple Docking Adapter (MDA) at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) are, left to right, scientist-astronaut Owen K. Garriott, science pilot; and astronauts Jack R. Lousma and Alan L. Bean, pilot and commander, respectively."
Mission Duration: July 28 - September 25, 1973
Time Duration: 58 days, 15 hours, 39 minutes, 42 seconds
"The Skylab 3 mission started out as routine, but was not without in-flight high drama of its own. Shortly after docking and entering the Orbital Workshop (OWS), all three crew members experienced motion sickness, delaying the activation of OWS on-board equipment.
Tumblr media
A more serious concern was raised on Mission Day-5 (MD-5). An apparent failure of two of the four thruster quadrants of the Command Service Module (CSM) reaction control system was detected.
Not only could an actual failure like this create an early end to the mission, it also could conceivably render the CSM incapable of supporting a safe return of the astronauts to Earth.
Launch crews at the Kennedy Space Center were placed on a 24-hour per-day, seven day per-week work schedule to prepare the Skylab 4 Saturn IB launch vehicle for flight in case an early launch was needed for a rescue operation."
Tumblr media
The Skylab 4 Saturn IB (CSM-118/SA-208) launch vehicle is rolled to Launch Complex 39, Pad B.
"A decision was made to continue the mission, and although the Skylab 4 launch vehicle had been rushed to flight-readiness, the CSM performed flawlessly during re-entry operations.
Tumblr media
On August 6, 1973 astronauts Garriott and Lousma performed a spacewalk which lasted 6 hours, 31 minutes. During this spacewalk, the astronauts were able to extend an external twin-pole thermal shield to replace the parasol thermal shield installed by the Skylab 2 crew. They also retrieved and replaced film from solar telescopes housed outside the OWS.
A second spacewalk by astronauts Garriott and Lousma was conducted on August 24, 1973. This one lasted 4 hours, 31 minutes. During this spacewalk, the astronauts retrieved and replaced film from solar telescopes housed outside the OWS and installed a cable for a new rate gyro package. They also performed some maintenance activities.
The third and final spacewalk of the mission was conducted on September 22, 1973. This one was conducted by astronauts Bean and Garriott and lasted 2 hours, 41 minutes. During this spacewalk, the astronauts retrieved and replaced film from solar telescopes housed outside the OWS and performed maintenance activities on other external experiment packages.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scientific experiments, including the observation of unanticipated dynamic solar activity, continued for much of the 59-day mission. The crew participated in classroom-oriented educational demonstrations regarding weightlessness.
Tumblr media
The Skylab 3 crew set a new manned space flight endurance record. Their in-flight health fared markedly better than the Skylab 2 crew, with the exception of the amount of bone calcium loss.
Tumblr media
A significant demonstration of long-term space flight and the long-term viability of the OWS was successfully achieved."
* Due to a NASA management error, crewed Skylab mission patches were designed in conflict with the official mission numbering scheme.
Tumblr media
An interesting side note, the wives created their version of the patch. I've covered the NSFW bits just so the Tumblr staff doesn't mark my blog as NSFW.
"The main feature on the second Skylab crew patch was Leonardo da Vinci's universal man, slightly retouched to make it 'G-rated'! Without their husbands knowledge, the astronaut wives also had a patch made which was a joke version of the official crew patch. The universal man figure had been replaced by a 'universal woman'. Instead of the astronauts names; Bean, Garriott and Lousma, their wives first names were shown: Sue, Helen-Mary and Gratia. The crew first became aware of the wives patch when they found stickers of them in their lockers on board Skylab."

Within just over a year, I had I won the London Music Award for ‘Best Undiscovered Talent,’ The Guardian’s ‘Future Music Award’ and released my first independent single, ‘Follow You Home.’īRIT was such a unique experience. I spent four years studying music alongside regularly gigging, performing or recording after school and on weekends. The following year I was lucky enough to be accepted to The BRIT School. But crucially, I found the self-confidence that I needed to continue. Not only because I went on to win the contest that year, but I also met lots of other talented musicians, many of whom I still work with regularly to this day. It was all very new to me and I’m so glad I took part. This was the first time I had ever performed my original music outside of school concerts, and there I was, playing to the streets of London. Nine years ago, I entered a performance contest in London called GIGS: Big Busk.

As I was only 11 years old at the time, the songs were mostly about movie stars I admired, but I knew then that I wanted to continue writing songs and develop my music.Īt just 22, you've achieved a lot of success. I switched to an acoustic guitar and began to write my own songs. I remember the very first time I heard Taylor Swift – I was in complete awe of her ability to narrate through lyric and song.

30 years ago... Last EVA Omega "Alaska III" Speedmaster September 1993, after a decade of spacewalk usage of the 4750 spacesuit glove series with sewn-in integrated Omega Speedmaster in the righthand glove, NASA started to use the Phase VI series gloves and NASA astronauts no longer wore a Speedmaster during EVA - spacewalks! During the 6th spaceshuttle flight, the 1st for "Challenger", NASA astronauts performed the first EVA - spacewalk wearing an Omega Speedmaster since the Skylab days of 1974! On this 4 hours long EVA, both Story Musgrave and Donald Peterson wore an Omega Alaska III "Radial Dial" Speedmaster chronograph, which was sewn-in the outer layer of their righthand spacesuit glove. This kind of spacesuit gloves was used for ten years, up to STS-51 “Discovery” in September 1993. From then on, NASA astronauts didn't wear the Speedmaster any longer for EVAs, but the Russian cosmonauts did, strapped over their Orlan spacesuits until 2022. Overall, the radial dial Speedmaster was worn in space between November 1981 (STS-2) and October 1995 (STS-73). Photos show NASA astronaut Story Musgrave in the cargo bay of orbiter “Challenger” wearing the EMU - Extravehicular Mobility Unit, with the Speedmaster sewn-in the extra pocket of the righthand glove’s outer TMG - Thermal Micrometeor Garment layer. Space history for Sunday.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On this day in 1973, Skylab III astronauts Owen K. Garriott (top. Get a shave, dude!) and Jack R. Lousma deployed the "twin pole" solar shield to help shade the Orbital Workshop.
Tumblr media
The solar shield built onto the workshop was torn off during launch and temperature inside the lab skyrocketed (if you will) to between 130°F to 150°F. The Skylab II crew installed the "parasol" sunshade that could be deployed from inside the spacecraft without an EVA. The "twin pole" shade augmented the "parasol" and brought temperatures down to the normal expected levels.
