Rescuing the Rescuer: Saving Myself from a Lifetime of Hurt
In this moving essay, Cathleen Calkins examines the cumulative emotional toll on ski patrollers who witness and respond to traumatic injury every day on the job.
"The alchemy between rescuer and rescued is strange: like a romantic relationship, only faster moving. The euphoria of starting simply at hello, I’m here to help before moving on and culminating at what feels like deep attachment. We say my patient, as in they transported my patient to the hospital, or my patient opted to return to the slopes, or my patient is in the bar. I felt possessive of those I spent so little time with because our paths crossed at a moment they needed my help. Perhaps I cared too much.
I used to wonder how the people I’d assisted were doing. Like the college student who snagged first chair to get on the snow early so he could make it home before his afternoon class. He didn’t look like a skier. His cheap snow pants were too big, his cotton hoodie soaked. I remember how crumpled he looked when I skied up to him and how his inaudible moans grew louder when we secured him to the backboard. Had his injury prevented him from leading the life he wanted?"

Great Colorado Sun article about skiing and board injuries over the past five years
However, there is an inference from the interviews that is incorrect. The ski patrol is not trained, licensed, or allowed to chase down people in skier v. skier collisions. Analyzing 5 years of injuries, crashes and hit-and-runs at Colorado ski areas by Jason Blevins Skier v. Skier collision is the term used to describe any collision between a skier, snowboarder, ski bike, or any other form of…

Changes for Izzy: 1994
The family heads to Blackhawk ski area for a weekend of skiing.  Usually Nic charges ahead, racing down the slopes on her new Solomon skis.  However, on her very first run she maneuvers to avoid a fallen child and crashes into a bank of trees.  Izzy sets up her own skis so that no one will run into Nic and skis as fast as she can to alert ski patrol.  Nic is taken by ski patrol in a toboggan off the mountain and to the doctor who x-rays her and casts her broken leg.  The girls agree to spend the rest of the weekend in the lodge together reading and playing cards so that their parents can enjoy some time skiing. Izzy learns that sometimes the best experiences happen when you forget about the plan and leave some room for fun.

Sunday Afternoon Coffee: A Story of God's Grace
It was my turn to share a testimony this morning of God’s grace in my life. I chose to tell this story: When I was 10, we moved to western Oregon. When I said that this morning, I think I said eastern, which is wrong. Anyway, we moved to Portland, which put us within driving distance of the ocean and Mount Hood, which is where my story took place. I was 12 by this time, and I had finally become…

Scrapped (?) thingy I made back during winter break lol
Concept was sorta based off of how bc Delphi was in a snowy region, it'd probably make sense for First Aid to be able to navigate in the snow? My other idea was redesigning First Aid and giving him a snowmobile altmode- (Might come back to it some day, but looking at my current WIP pile... unlikely ;v;)

it’s not gonna happen but if they do end up going in the direction of the next arc coupled w ivypool’s heart & whatever the second part is being involved with the return of the double dead cats in some way, & that’s where the voice in moonpaw’s head comes from, id love to see bristlefrost as the sinister voice over someone like hawkfrost or any other already evil cat. every single aspect of warrior life was used against her. she saw the warrior code weaponised, her vague ambitions & genuine compassion to contribute led her to a position in which she was ostracised and isolated under the power of an active threat to the safety of everything she loved, she spent her short life suffering for the sake of the clan and she never got her own future. she is absolutely a giving cat but i can see being stuck in some kind of purgatory for as long as she has been driving anyone to extremity. and it would be a lot fresher then just having Evil Cat #3 Returns! as the main issue.
this isn’t my ideal id much rather we do the twin thing or the moonpool thing & bristle staying dead is for the best but Scary Ghost Cats Again & Bristle Back are both things i can see them doing and this is a more interesting way of doing that? then generic evil cat & bristle returns to be a loving mother or whatever

Linked Universe Ski Patrol AU
(dreamt this up while skiing today and had to get it out of my head)
Warriors:
Senior Leader, Ski Patrol & Part-Time Assistant Coach w/Time
Skier - Speciality: Slalom Ski
Has the best drip on the mountain. Colour matched outfit and gear.
Technique snob. But he looks elegant af so it’s hard to turn your nose up at his advice.
Mostly teaches novice teen-adult ski classes. Tends to be the designated instructor for private lessons.
Knows the students in his class are crushing on him and taking sly snapchats, but he’s cool with it. Legend makes sure to body check him into a now drift if it gets to his head.
Lead coordinator for Search & Rescue.
Schedules all safety and team briefings for first thing in the morning (much to the annoyance of LITERALLY EVERYONE).
Is a stickler for rules and will enforce them if people are being unsafe on piste.
Will stop snow spray other members of the ski patrol (makes sure to have a swift exit strategy when he targets Legend & Four).
Wears those old school ski sunglasses.
Sky:
Ski Patrol Member
Snowboarder - Specialty: Big Air
Is so often late to morning briefing sessions, he is immune to Wars’ glare.
Rides goofy.
Tends to be a very laidback and confident rider and isn’t one to race down the mountain at mach speed.
HOWEVER, he will absolutely send it over huge jumps whenever he feels he needs to remind everyone how much of a badass he is.
Dude has no fear of heights.
Will occasionally assist in lessons, but is not a primary instructor and would prefer not to be.
Gives one of the smoothest rescue toboggan rides down the mountain.
Will stop and offer encouragement to new snowboarders.
Twilight and Sky have a long standing skier/snowboarder rivalry going and do not miss an opportunity to be little shits to each other.
Will give ONE free pass for rule breaking.
Wolfie:
MVP Ski Patrol Member
Best digger on the Search & Rescue Team.
Often found riding the lift with Twilight.
Will catch a ride across Twilight or Wars shoulders when too tired to run back down the mountain.
Barks encouragingly at the kiddos learning to pizza.
Sits beside the t-bar so he can get extra pats from riders heading up the mountain.
On his off duty days, he is more often than not, dog-napped by Wild & Hyrule to go skijoring.
Best boy on on the mountain, no debate.
Four:
Pro Shop Technician & Part-Time Ski Patrol Member
Skier - Blade Skis (that he CNC machined himself).
Has no end of patience helping fit the excitable kiddos with rentals. But can and will get sassy with entitled tourists who think they know more than him.
Prefers quick carving to really test the limits of his equipment.
Has fixed more equipment of Wild’s than he cares to think about. Four: “HOW IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE TO BEND YOUR SKI IN THIS DIRECTION?!?”
More often than not can be found at the terrain park.
Backpack, sunglasses, hands in pockets. He’s a whole vibe and knows it.
Runs a small artisan shop selling CNC’d speciality ski blades.
Fills in on Ski Patrol if someone is away/sick.
Much to his dismay, is usually designated as the ‘patient’ for practice rescue scenarios. But, admittedly, enjoys riding in the rescue toboggan especially if Hyrule is driving as he full sends it down the mountain.
Um this is getting a tad long. I’ll have to put the other boys full description in another post at a later date. But here’s the overview (mostly so I don’t forget!)
Twilight:
Senior Leader, Ski Patrol
Skier & Ski Mountaineering
Wild:
Wilderness Instructor & Part-Time Assistant Coach w/Time
Skier - Speciality: Freestyle & Nordic Ski
Ex-Ski Patrol Member
Legend:
Ski Patrol Member
Skier - Speciality: Moguls & Backcountry
Former National Team member
Time:
National Team Coach & Operations Lead, Ski Patrol
Skier - Regular Alpine & Telemark
Wind:
Junior National Team Member (& VERY jealous he is not old enough to join Ski Patrol)
Skier — Seriously thinking about transitioning to snowboarding as a primary.
Hyrule:
Wilderness Instructor & Ski Patrol Member
Snowboarder, Nordic Ski & Backcountry

Hi
For the wip game
What about the ski lodge au ? Thank you
💜
From WIP Game
Ski Lodge AU is a collaborative AU between @wahwahwashbear and myself. He posed the idea of ski patroller Joey who is forced to babysit Seto and his rich frienemies on their annual ski trip where they rent out a luxury chalet and do over-the-top shit like heli skiing. Joey and Seto start to grow close and fall for each other over the course of the trip.
Here's a snippet. I didn't get very far tbh.
---
"Seto Kaiba—"
Joey couldn't help but perk at the name. Somehow, the tech CEO was the most tolerable of the bunch? He wasn't exactly friendly, but he didn't go out of his way to antagonize ski patrol or other resort staff like his peers. As far as pretty faces went, Joey knew which one he rather be stuck babysitting all day.
"His brother, Mokuba Kaiba's also coming. And rounding out the group this year is Jagger Princeton."
Joey pulled a face. An elbow ribbed him and he looked to his left to find his buddy, Tristan, mirroring his expression. Who the hell named their kid Jagger, they both silently asked each other.
Taylor continued, "They're requesting the same arrangement as previous years. Two on-call patrol members to accompany their group for the duration of their stay. But given that they will be heliskiing, at least one person has to be a Senior Patroller, preferably with backcountry experience."
Again, Tristan elbowed him. There were only four Senior Patrollers in their chapter, Joey included. And of the four, he had the most wilderness survival skills under his belt.
"Pay's time and a half for the two weeks since it includes Christmas. Room is available at the chalet if you don't want to commute each day, but you'll be sharing with each other. Any questions?"
A tentative hand rose above the group. It was one of the newbies, straight out of college. "Isn't that like special treatment? I mean, we're here for everyone's safety, not just theirs, right? It doesn't seem fair to monopolize two of us for the eight of them."
"Since when do rules apply to the rich and obnoxious?" snorted Tristan.
Taylor was far more diplomatic in his response. That was why he was Patrol Director. "Yes, this is not how we usually operate. But we can't do our job effectively if we don't maintain our partnerships with the mountain's resorts. The management that owns the Sunridge chalet has kindly requested this accommodation." He paused for a second before adding, "And the guests have promised a generous donation to our chapter as thanks."
There it was. Money spoke at the end of the day.

thanks for the tag @guplia ! I'm just making a new thread cause that last one was really long lol
The first time i broke a bone was skiing (my collarbone) and i tried to convince myself i was fine...almost went up the lift for another run. If my group hadn't convinced me to stay in might've!
Happened early in the season and i missed out all of the good stuff that year. That was my first experience with ski patrol and now I'm one of them!
No pressure tags @kittenninja14 @wisteriixa @nickelwick @gracethefoundfamilyfan & anyone else who wants to join!
it's so weird to me that everyone on this website is a human person outside of their weird internet niche so rb this with a random bit of your lore
