Hi Josh! What was your career pathway to where you are now?

When I was in college, one of the few productive things I did was teach myself HTML, Photoshop (already kind of knew it), Illustrator, and Flash 3.0. I did a few professional website jobs, including the site for Steve's Tattoo in Madison, Wisconsin.

When I was about to graduate from college with a degree in history and no real idea what to do with it (I thought I was going to do web design and maybe become an apprentice at a tattoo parlor), my friend Michael told me there was an opening for a webmaster at Black Isle Studios in Irvine, CA.

I applied with an excessively long cover letter. Of the 62 candidates who applied, 3 knew Flash. Their first choice declined the position and moved to Seattle to be with his girlfriend. Thanks, dude.

I started at Black Isle in March of 1999 and my first job was to design the website for Planescape: Torment. By around November of that year, I had convinced Feargus Urquhart, head of Black Isle Studios (and still my boss at Obsidian), to let me work half time as a designer on Icewind Dale.

I eventually transitioned out of web (my last site design was the original website for BioWare's Neverwinter Nights) and worked as a designer full time on Icewind Dale. I was also a designer on the expansions, Heart of Winter and Trials of the Luremaster. I was the lead designer on Icewind Dale II.

In 2003, as Interplay was imploding, I went to work for about a year and a half at Midway San Diego (on Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows). That didn't work out, so I got a job at Obsidian as a senior designer on Neverwinter Nights 2. I eventually took over as lead following the departure of that team's original lead.

After that, I worked on Aliens: Crucible (canceled), then directed Fallout: New Vegas, then a project for Microsoft called Stormlands (canceled), then Pillars of Eternity, then Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. Around that time, I was promoted to Studio Design Director. And I'm currently also the game director on Pentiment...

Sapporo-Stone Brewing provides updates on their first phase of expansion.

ESCONDIDO, CA ... Two years following the announcement of its acquisition by Sapporo U.S.A., San Diego-based Sapporo-Stone Brewing, unveils the near completion of phase one of its expansion project at its Escondido brewery. The $20 million investment in the Escondido, CA facility is one of two significant investments for growth with $40 million invested in the company’s Richmond, VA operation. These investments will result in the doubling of the company’s capacity to about 700,000 barrels a year across its bi-coastal breweries. The brewing of Sapporo beers in Escondido, CA and Richmond, VA is now underway. 

Stone Brewing, Southern California’s largest craft brewery was acquired by Sapporo U.S.A. in 2022. The goal was to transition from an importer to a U.S. brewer, ultimately brewing, selling, and marketing all of Sapporo’s beers for the U.S. market locally. Richmond’s expansion will be unveiled this fall. By late summer, all production of Sapporo beers will have moved from Canada and Asia to the U.S. 

Sapporo-Stone Brewing is now a combined team of nearly 850 employees, about 600 of whom are based in San Diego County. In support of its expansion project, the company added 125 jobs locally and another 75 outside of San Diego County. More than 150 team members have been promoted or moved into new or expanded roles since the acquisition. 

“Operationally, this acquisition looks a lot like a merger,” stated Zach Keeling, Sapporo-Stone Brewing Interim CEO. “Our two companies are now fully integrated – Innovating, brewing, selling, marketing, and operating as a single, combined business. The Sapporo and Stone Brewing brands will maintain their individual identities, but we are Sapporo-Stone in name, operations, and culture.”

The Escondido expansion project includes additional tanks and packaging lines to increase capacity and efficiency. On the West Coast Sapporo-Stone now operates out of its two Escondido brewing and packaging buildings and a distribution warehouse with offices also in Escondido. It occupies additional warehouse space in San Marcos, CA and Downey, CA. The company operates two Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens and five Stone Brewing Tap Rooms. On the East Coast, Sapporo-Stone operates another brewery, an off-site warehouse, and a Stone Brewing Tap Room all in Richmond, VA.  

Now the nation’s 12th largest brewery by volume* Sapporo-Stone Brewing aims for a top 10 ranking. Finding growth in the beer market is challenging as craft consolidates and alcohol drinkers explore countless new innovations, but Sapporo-Stone’s craft-meets-import portfolio sets the company apart. In both the Import and Craft categories, Sapporo and Stone are gaining share over the last year. Sapporo is the number one selling Asian beer brand in the U.S., with sales up +13.1%, nearly double the growth of the Import category, +6.7%.** Most of this growth is attributed to its flagship Sapporo Premium. Stone’s best sellers include the Stone Delicious IPA family of beers, Stone IPA and Stone Buenaveza Salt & Lime Lager. Two hours driving out of the city of San Diego, the longest ride I've ever had with a man on a car. It seems like a lil road-trip. Semi escape from busy America's finest city. We always said that travel to escape life but so life doesn't escape you. But it feels like you are now my lil escape. On our second date, you join us with my friends for an adventure trip at Glamis Sand Dunes. We watched the sun goes down, had our first picture together. You’re not a fan of pictures but HA HA HA HA I got you. We just met but it feels safe when I'm with you, I don’t know it feels like we’ve known for so long. We had Mcdickies while on the road. I had my favorite, of course chicken nuggets with medium fries, sprite, ranch and honey mustard YUMMM. You said you're already had Taco Bell, you good to go. You're not a fan of taking pictures but we had the most beautiful pictures. We looked like a couple but this is just our second date. We hold are hands through out our drive and trip. We pulled up into the parking lot of that noodle house in the town of Brawley. We had our first real kiss. We kissed like it's the end of the world. Driving back to deygo was so fast, we didn't noticed it's already on my apartment. It was the best date so far.

This is a difficult announcement to have to write, and one we’d have hoped we’d never need to, but it is with a heavy heart we in Los Campesinos! need to announce the forthcoming departure of Aleks Campesinos! from our number.

After three years of LC!, in an incredible journey that has gone from inaudible student union side room gigs to playing infront of thousands in Caracas city centre; Aleks is now, as she always intended, departing the band in order to return to her studies.

In many ways, it would be great if there had been some falling out in the band and that Aleks couldn’t bear to tour with us anymore, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. We’re all better, closer friends now than we’ve ever been, and this makes the decision tougher on both Aleks, and the other six of us. We’ve always been very pragmatic when thinking about the future for Los Campesinos!, and it is at this point that Aleks has decided her future does not reside in flogging this LC! nonsense any  longer. Though she will remain a Campesinos! for eternity. There’s no escaping that.

It shouldn’t need saying, and perhaps it almost seems insensitive, but it’s inevitable news of this nature will cause tongues to wag, so it’s best to confirm that Los Campesinos! will continue as a band, stronger and more united than ever. Though this news is being announced only now, it’s something we as a band have been aware of, and preparing for, for the past year. The individual joining the band to take on Aleks’ duties, and more, has been a friend of the band for a long time and though we are understandably maudlin, nay, heartbroken, this is coupled with a great excitement for what we intend to go on and achieve in the near and distant future.

In the meantime, we are finishing up Aleks’ final record with the band, and can announce her final LC! shows – a US Tour, taking place in August. Taking in our biggest indoor shows to date, as well as a happy return to the site of our first US show (Lollapalooza), we navigate parts of America previously unchartered by us, before Aleks’ very last shows come with a weekend in the California sun.

The girl will go out in fucking style; we will make completely sure of that.
