act 3 scene 1 mercutio and benvolio is the most wolfstar conversation ever.
Benvolio: I pray thee, good Mercutio, let's retire. The day is hot, the Capulet's abroad. And if we meet we shall not scape a brawl, for now, these hot days, is the mad blood stirring.
Mercutio: Thou art like one of those fellows that, when he enters the confines of a tavern, claps me his sword upon the table and says, 'God send me no need of thee!'; and by the operation of the second cup draws him on the drawer, which indeed there is no need.
Benvolio: Am I like such a fellow?
Mercutio: Come, Come, thou art as hot a jack in thy mood as any in Italy; and as soon moved to be moody, and as soon moody to be moved.
Benvolio: And what to?
Mercutio: Nay, an there was two such, we should have none shortly, for one would kill the other. Thou! Why, thou wilt quarrel with a man that hath a hair more or a hair less in his beard than thou hast. Thou wilt quarrel with a man for cracking nuts, having no other reason but because thou hast hazel eyes. What eye but such a an eye would spy out such a quarrel? Thy head is as full of quarrels as an egg is full of meat, and yet thy head hath been beaten as addle as an egg for quarreling. Thou hast quarrelled with a man for coughing in the street, because he hath wakened thy dog that hath lain asleep in the sun. Didst thou not fall out with a tailor for wearing his new doublet before Easter? With another for tying his new shoes with old ribbon? And yet thou wilt tutor me for quarreling!
Benvolio: An I were so apt to quarrel as thou art, any man should buy the fee- simple of my life for an hour and a quarter.
Mercutio: The fee simple! O' simple!

my marauders heights HC is:
Remus - 193 cm (6’4 give or take) (never beating the allegations 🌴 )
James - 185 cm (a round 6ft) (athletic build, but not bulky)
Sirius - 181 cm (5’9) (hedi slimane x ysl model build)
Peter - 174 cm (5’7) (his rounder build makes him look shorter than he actually is! loves to be around lily because she makes him feel like a giant)
i like height difference wolfstar, but i don't think Sirius is necessarily short, only that Remus is a tree

Jilytober Day 2
Prompt: A: “If anyone does X I’m going to love them forever.” B: Does X.
Sirius leaned against the bar, flashing his most charming grin at Madam Rosmerta. “Come on, Rosmerta, just one Firewhiskey,” he coaxed, his voice dripping with flirtation. “I promise I won’t tell a soul. Think of it as doing your part to keep a poor, parched student from withering away.”
Rosmerta raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. “You know the rules, Black. Butterbeer or nothing.”
Beside him, James was only half paying attention, lounging casually with his elbow on the bar top. He was focused on a much more important task: flicking tiny wadded-up pieces of parchment toward an empty pint glass behind the bar. Each throw was carefully aimed, but even the best Chaser at Hogwarts had his limits.
“I swear, Pads,” James muttered, barely glancing over at Sirius, “if a girl can get one of these paper quaffles into that high glass over there”—he pointed to a particularly tall, slender glass perched on a high shelf—“I’ll love them forever. It’s the only one I haven’t managed yet.”
Sirius smirked, glancing at the glass in question. “I don’t know, Prongs,” he drawled, eyes twinkling. “If you, the top Chaser in our school, can’t manage it, I’m not sure anyone can.”
James rolled his eyes, flicking another piece of paper. It sailed just past the pint glass, falling short of the tall one. “You underestimate the power of sheer determination, Padfoot. One day, someone will do it.”
As if on cue, Lily walked up to the bar, glancing between the two boys before casually ordering a drink. Sirius’ grin widened the moment he saw her. “Hey, Evans,” he called, leaning in with a mischievous glint in his eye. “Reckon you can’t get a piece of paper into that glass over there.”
Lily didn’t even bother to answer. She simply rolled her eyes, grabbed the wadded-up piece of paper from Sirius' hand, and without a second thought, flicked it effortlessly across the bar. It sailed smoothly through the air and landed with a quiet plop into the tall glass. Dead center.
James' mouth dropped open in stunned silence as he watched her walk away, completely nonchalant, as if she hadn’t just accomplished the impossible.
Sirius broke the silence first, clapping James on the shoulder with a smug grin. “So, will that be a June wedding, then?”
James didn’t move, still staring after her. “Have I died? I feel like I just died.”
Sirius chuckled, shaking his head. “Easy there, mate.”
“I’m in heaven,” James continued, barely hearing Sirius. “And that was an angel.”
“Merlin, Prongs.” Sirius rolled his eyes, though he was clearly enjoying the moment. “You’re so embarrassing.”

Beast - September 17th - words: 920 - @wolfstarmicrofic
Sometimes, Remus caught himself thinking about what his life after graduation would look like. He'd have to get his own flat, because he couldn't imagine a reality where he'd be leeching off of Sirius or James. The flat would be tiny, walls getting damp in the cold winter, the ceilings too high, the radiator heat not quite enough. He'd have a job, he'd have to buy his own groceries, and cook, and clean. Life would be dull, because everyone's life eventually became that - reduced to daily routines, job and falling asleep alone in a bed made for two.
None of his friends knew that, deep in his heart, Remus was a romantic. The girls kept recommending him filthy romance novels they loved, thinking that he'd never read them, because that was something only girls did. But he read all of them, from cover to cover, and he kept imagining himself and Sirius in place of the main characters. And then once last summer the girls and he went to see a romantic comedy at a movie theatre. Remus kept pretending like he hated every second of it and yet, in the darkness of the theatre, he couldn't stop smiling. He kept glancing left and right to make sure nobody noticed. His grin was caused by the male lead, his hair just the most exquisite shade of black, although the length was too short to be a perfect match. But he let it slide easily because the man was handsome enough that Remus was quickly able to swap his face with Sirius's in his own imagination.
In those rare moments when he allowed himself to daydream, to enter the deepest parts of his imagination, to unlock the part of himself that he kept deep inside on a daily basis, he always came back to that one - his future. If he could choose it, he'd spend it all with Sirius. An apartment with two rooms, only one a bedroom and then the other one Sirius's studio, to let him have the space to paint in. Remus would come home from work every day, 8-hour shift full and stretching mercilessly, but he'd be happy, because he'd have a person that waited for him, the grey piercing eyes softening at the sight of him, the weight of the gaze doing something beautiful to Remus's abdomen.
He never told anyone about this, not even in the moments when his friends kept talking about all the girls they wanted to snog. They usually looked at him expectantly, waiting for him to spill. It was natural - he never told them about anyone, after all. He never even seemed to be interested in people, but that was because the only people that ever caught his attention were named Sirius Black. And Sirius was too interested in Mary to ever realise that.
"You're allowed to," James had told him once, in a futile attempt to brighten his mood after a particularly foul full moon. "You're smart, you're funny. Birds are waiting for someone like you. You just need to open up, live a little. You know, you're not some sort of beast that's never allowed to find happiness."
But that was exactly the point - luring anyone in was wrong, because he'd be subjecting the poor soul to a lifetime of full moons and needing help with every little thing for a week after that and scars that didn't heal. He didn't deserve love. He didn't deserve the warmth of the fireplace and the feeling of Sirius's head snuggled softly in his lap.
"Are you sure that it's okay?" Sirius asked. Remus only mumbled something he hoped sounded like a confirmation, too preoccupied with feeling how wrong it was. "Pomfrey told you to rest."
"It's okay, Pads," he said quickly. It was wrong but it didn't mean he wanted it to end.
The pair of them now had the common room all to themselves. They were lying on the comfiest couch, the one by the fireplace, and Bowie's voice was coming from the record player. Remus could spend eternity like this, not moving, only he and Sirius and the crackling of wood.
They didn't jolt even when James ran through the portrait, screaming, his face red and puffy from the hex Lily treated him with after yet another desperate try to make her notice him. James's eyes were tiny in comparison to the monstrosity his head has become.
Remus didn't react, trying to bite down on a laugh desperately, but when he felt a pat on his arm, he looked down. His eyes locked with the cold grey, the two of them erupting into laughter at the same moment. Remus collapsed himself downwards, to the soft fabric of Sirius's t-shirt; he inhaled the smell of fresh laundry, his shoulders shaking as he tried to steady himself.
In the moments like these, he allowed himself to think it was real. That it wasn't just in his head and instead Sirius felt the same for him.
"Do you think he's ever going to learn?" Remus asked with a snort after James went to the hospital wing. "Or find another object of desire?"
"No, you silly beast," Sirius said, and it was meant to be teasing, but Remus tensed at the words. "People like James never learn. And that's part of his charm."
Sirius had just confirmed his suspicions. He couldn't have this, not for long anyway - they had only four months of Hogwarts left and then it was all going to end.

Established Relationship (May 20th)
word count: 683
@wolfstarmicrofic
“What do you mean? What’s there not to like about summer?” Sirius asks, looking at Remus from above the book he’s reading. The book the both of them are reading, actually, except Remus is a quicker reader so now he has to wait until Sirius finishes to be able to talk to him about it.
“The stickiness of it all,” Remus says, resting his head on Sirius’ shoulder and closing his eyes. They’re sitting under their favorite tree near the Black Lake and today is their last day in Hogwarts until next September. Sirius is spending the summer with Remus and his family.
“When else am I going to spend my days eating ripe fruit and wearing too-short shorts? Summer is great.”
Remus smiles. “Sure. If you say so. You're burnt for three months straight, though.”
“I would’ve been too powerful if I had the ability to tan and not burn.”
Remus laughs. “Yeah, that does make me feel better about you being unfairly gorgeous. At least you can’t tan.”
“The universe gave me a boyfriend that tans beautifully though, so I’m not complaining.” Sirius looks at Remus. “You’re unfairly gorgeous.”
Remus’ favorite thing in all the universe is Sirius complimenting him. Still, he makes a face. “Gross.”
Sirius closes his book. Remus raises an eyebrow. “You are never going to finish that book, Godric. I swear you have until tomorrow before I spoil it for–”
“What do you want to do?” Sirius asks, kissing Remus’ cheek.
Remus blinks. “Like, right now? I want to read to you, maybe make out a little bit, you know how it is.”
Sirius laughs Remus’ favorite laugh. “Sure. I mean, I’d love to. I just meant, like, later. Like, next summer.”
“Next summer?”
“There’s no more Hogwarts after next summer.”
“Ah,” Remus says. Next year is their last at Hogwarts. “That’s a little terrifying, isn’t it?”
“A little.”
“I think I’d like to teach,” Remus says, then he flushes. “I mean, if I could. A werewolf teacher sounds pretty horrible, doesn’t it?”
Sirius flicks Remus’ temple. “I hate it when you say things like that. You’d be an amazing teacher. Academia looks too good on you, moonstone.”
Remus might die. Having Sirius believe in him even more than he believes in himself is something that is so dear to his heart. He wants to tell Sirius this but he flicks Sirius’ temple instead. “You’re sweet. You’d be an amazing healer.”
Sirius looks at him funny. “How do you know what I want to do, and I don’t know that about you?”
“I’m a better boyfriend,” Remus says, grinning. “Also, everyone knows everything about you because you are a professional blabbermouth.”
“I am not.”
“It’s cute.”
“I do not talk a lot,” Sirius says. “I will take a vow of silence right now.”
Remus laughs. “Don’t! Your blabbering is my favorite thing about you.”
“How romantic,” Sirius says. His voice is monotone but Remus knows he’s trying not to laugh.
“I’m excited about living with you. After school”
“You want to live with me?” Sirius asks, and he sounds sincere.
“No, I don’t, actually,” Remus says, and he flicks Sirius’ temple again because how can he not? “Don’t be stupid. Who else would I live with?”
Sirius’ smile is the sun. “I love that you love me. It’s my favorite thing.”
Remus’ heartstrings tug. “Why do you say things like that? Godric.” He pauses. “You loving me is my favorite thing, too. Whatever.”
“We need to learn how to break into vaults.”
“Sure.”
“I need to steal some of my family’s money. Really. I wasn’t thinking about buying a flat before getting disowned. I should’ve toned it down a little bit. Did you know I officially got disowned on a stupid Tuesday night while making new paper from old scraps of paper? It’s a whole thing where you shred it and then dunk it in water and wet tiny scraps of paper have such a weird texture. Anyway, It came out of nowhere, really. The disowning, not the paper making.”
Remus laughs. “You are such a blabbermouth.”

i find it so cute that you and five have formed an alliance and discuss cock sizes of wolfstar like ten inches is even a common thing. why are you insistent on making sirius black so small in every way and remus so big. it’s unrealistic the idiot got that much right
Scooch in for me Anon we need a chat.
Firstly, you say all that with full bass and round it off by calling someone else an idiot. You brought that point to a home run my guy.
Secondly, Five and I have had several conversations relating to many a thing fandom related and not, as one who is capable of forming friendships (I know this might be difficult for you) often does, and yes one of those topics has been the size of Remus J. Lupin’s horse 🐓. Now, the point of you saying I, or we, are insistent on making Sirius’ everything smaller is bizarre to me as someone (you) with adequate enough reading skills to understand the ask of Five’s you’ve garnered this information from, I’m going to make the assumption you therefore have enough to read/view everything else on our pages. One of these things is that Five’s Sirius is exceptionally tiny in comparison to their Remus— their, Remus, their Sirius, and their work is of course going to reflect that. As a supporter of a good size difference, I’ve gobbled that up since the word go and supported Five’s vision through drooling over their story and making subsequent art to reflect this very representation of Wolfstar.
What I haven’t done, is expressed any specific sizing that I myself visualise my default Wolfstar to be, only spitballed a range of heights (I got you, these were: Sirius being anywhere between 5’7 and 5’11 and Remus, 6’2 to 6’5). To save you the question, I’d say my default headcanon is Sirius as 5’10 and Remus at a whopping, staggering, unrealistic monstrosity of 6’4. Forgive me for enjoying a short(er) but very much average Sirius next to a tall Remus.
Keeping in line with your hot poker tone, I’ll agree with you on one thing and that is, ten inches worth of 🐓 is very rare but I’ll let you in on a secret as to how I personally, came to that figure that inspired Five’s vision and my own separate one outside of her gorgeous story— the man I’m dating. Might shock you to know real men exist outside the world of fanfiction, with big hands and obnoxious heights (6’7) and huge extremities between their legs (10”). Double figures can exist outside of your IQ.
Also, even if anyone does enjoy absorbing a huge Remus and an exceptionally tiny Sirius as a constant theme in their experience here, who the fuck are you to shame them for it. Fiction, is what you’re getting a twist over. Fiction. Go run off into the corner of the fandom where what you enjoy does exist and take a breath because it seems you stumbled across an adult conversation here, and it’s got you feeling all out of sorts.

Could you expand on the James was implied to be abusive?
So, to clarify, everything in this meta isn’t necessarily my interpretation. Some of it is, but some is in fact the opposite of my own interpretation (esp. re: Snape). But I’m going for a Doylist lens for once and trying to unweave what JKR was trying to do. This isn't normally how I analyze the text - but it's helpful to know so people can develop a more informed version of their interpretations.
I think JKR intended Jily as, at best, a dysfunctional marriage where they weren’t truly in love, and at worst, an abusive one. I’ve seen speculations that JKR based James on her abusive ex-husband - I’m not sure where that comes from or is true, it might be entirely made up, but I’m mentioning it here.
1.0 In Photographs
Photographs are regularly used in canon to show family estrangement and rejection, and in this section I'll demonstrate how they're used for the same purpose with James and Lily.
To start off, we see James and Lily in the Mirror of Erised, standing next to each other - but remember what the inscription on the frame means (I show not your face but your heart's desire), and what Dumbledore says:
[...] he noticed that she was crying; smiling, but crying at the same time. The tall, thin, black-haired man standing next to her put his arm around her.
“It shows us nothing more or less than the deepest, most desperate desire of our hearts. [...] However, this mirror will give us neither knowledge or truth. Men have wasted away before it, entranced by what they have seen, or been driven mad, not knowing if what it shows is real or even possible." (PS)
What we'll realize via a close analysis is that the image of James and Lily in the Mirror of Erised standing next to each other is exactly what Dumbledore says - it’s only Harry’s heart’s desire, it isn’t the truth. That Dumbledore’s words about the Mirror not being real isn’t just about James and Lily being dead, but the hidden meaning is that it also refers to James and Lily’s marriage.
Next, we get James and Lily's wedding photo, and in that photo James and Lily are standing arm-in-arm, according to Harry's POV Lily looks "alight with happiness", and Lily's also standing next to Sirius. So temporarily, in that snapshot, the image in the Mirror of Erised seems like it's still the truth.
But then we get to the Order photo in OoTP, the book Harry's meant to shed his idealization of his father:
“That’s Dumbledore’s brother, Aberforth, only time I ever met him, strange bloke... That’s Dorcas Meadowes, Voldemort killed her personally... Sirius, when he still had short hair... and... there you go, thought that would interest you!” Harry’s heart turned over. His mother and father were beaming up at him, sitting on either side of a small, watery-eyed man Harry recognized at once as Wormtail: He was the one who had betrayed their whereabouts to Voldemort and so helped bring about their deaths. (OoTP)
Most notably, James and Lily aren't next to each other, because Wormtail sits between them.
Note that Dumbledore is also standing apart from Elphias Doge and Aberforth, hinting at the way he keeps emotional distance from his friends with the former and family estrangement in the latter, and Remus is similarly standing apart from his friends - and just as important is where Lily is standing. Also note that the other married couple, Alice and Frank, are implied to be standing next to each other.
This is our first clue that what Harry sees in the Mirror of Erised and in the wedding photo is at least a partial lie.
Then, in DH, Lily sends Sirius a picture of herself and Harry - with her husband out of frame, to the point that Harry initially can’t even tell for sure it’s James in that photo:
A black-haired baby was zooming in and out of the picture on a tiny broom, roaring with laughter, and a pair of legs that must have belonged to James was chasing after him […] (DH) Then he ripped in two the photograph he was also holding, so that he kept the part from which Lily laughed, throwing the portion showing James and Harry back onto the floor, under the chest of drawers (DH)
Very like the following quotes and examples:
Only the photographs on the mantelpiece really showed how much time had passed. Ten years ago, there had been lots of pictures of what looked like a large pink beach ball wearing different-colored bonnets — but Dudley Dursley was no longer a baby, and now the photographs showed a large blond boy riding his first bicycle, on a carousel at the fair, playing a computer game with his father, being hugged and kissed by his mother. The room held no sign at all that another boy lived in the house, too. (PS) He couldn’t remember his parents at all. His aunt and uncle never spoke about them, and of course he was forbidden to ask questions. There were no photographs of them in the house. (PS) A photograph of the Weasley family stood beside the in-tray. Harry noticed that Percy appeared to have walked out of it. (OoTP) The china, which bore the Black crest and motto, was all thrown unceremoniously into a sack by Sirius, and the same fate met a set of old photographs in tarnished silver frames, all of whose occupants squealed shrilly as the glass covering them smashed. he had also managed to retrieve the silver-framed family photographs that Sirius had thrown away over the summer. Their glass might be shattered, but still the little black-and-white people inside them peered haughtily up at him, including — he felt a little jolt in his stomach — the dark, heavy-lidded woman whose trial he had witnessed in Dumbledore’s Pensieve: Bellatrix Lestrange. By the looks of it, hers was Kreacher’s favorite photograph; he had placed it to the fore of all the others (OoTP) The old man’s eyes traveled to the painting of the girl over the mantelpiece. It was, now Harry looked around properly, the only picture in the room. There was no photograph of Albus Dumbledore, nor of anyone else. (DH)
As displayed above, OoTP in particular introduces many estrangements: Percy's from his family, Sirius's from his family, Aberforth making his first appearance and hinting at his conflict with his brother, and of course the continuous emphasis on Petunia's estrangement from Lily, and all of these are emphasized via photographs... as is Jily's estrangement.
The comparison to the Dumbledores is probably the most apt - Aberforth and Albus both talk of Ariana very lovingly while being estranged from each other, similar to how Lily talks of Harry in her letter while there being minimal references to her relationship with James by itself.
Additionally, right before Harry reaches Lily's letter and the photograph with her and Harry, he views the photo of the Marauders on Sirius's bedroom wall and muses on the group's specific dynamics, and then thinks “or was it simply because Harry knew how it had been, that he saw these things in the picture?”
But the thing is, Harry can't see the truth in the picture Lily sends Sirius, that it's a sign of an broken marriage with James - because he doesn't know how it had been with Lily, will never know, and accepting that is meant to be part of his acceptance of death. (Worth noting that JKR wrote HP while her own mother was dying/after her death).
To summarize, Jily get farther and farther away from each other in these snapshots - they go from first standing next to each other, to standing apart in the Order photo, to not standing together again in the photograph Lily sends to Sirius - because James isn't in the photo at all.
Of course, the evidence here is circumstantial - I'm not going to make a judgment on i.e. Sirius and James's closeness by them not standing together in that or the wedding photo (Sirius and Lily standing together in both on the other hand…).
But since James and Lily are explicitly stated as standing next to each other in the Mirror of Erised, and the narrative goes out of its way to point out they aren't standing beside each other in that photograph in the same book you get stuff like "Lily loathed James and maybe James forced her to marry him", I assume it's significant, especially given the Mirror of Erised explicitly comes up several times in OoTP itself:
A great black dragon was rearing in front of him… His father and mother were waving at him out of an enchanted mirror (OoTP) He remembered seeing his dead parents in the Mirror of Erised four years ago. He was going to be able to talk to Sirius again, right now, he knew it — (OoTP)
2.0 Lily as The Golden Snitch
A very, very important point is that James doodling Lily’s initials with the Snitch was never meant to be romantic - because the hidden, true meaning of this is that Lily is represented by the Snitch and James playing with the Snitch represents James and Lily’s relationship:
Harry stared at Wormtail for a moment, then back at James, who was now doodling on a bit of scrap parchment. He had drawn a Snitch and was now tracing the letters L. E. What did they stand for? “Me too,” said James. He put his hand in his pocket and took out a struggling Golden Snitch. “Where’d you get that?” “Nicked it,” said James casually. He started playing with the Snitch, allowing it to fly as much as a foot away and seizing it again; his reflexes were excellent. Wormtail watched him in awe. [...] James was still playing with the Snitch, letting it zoom farther and farther away, almost escaping but always grabbed at the last second. Wormtail was watching him with his mouth open. Every time James made a particularly difficult catch, Wormtail gasped and applauded. After five minutes of this, Harry wondered why James didn’t tell Wormtail to get a grip on himself, but James seemed to be enjoying the attention. Harry noticed his father had a habit of rumpling up his hair as though to make sure it did not get too tidy, and also that he kept looking over at the girls by the water’s edge. “Put that away, will you?” said Sirius finally, as James made a fine catch and Wormtail let out a cheer. “Before Wormtail wets himself from excitement.” Wormtail turned slightly pink but James grinned. “If it bothers you,” he said, stuffing the Snitch back in his pocket. (OoTP)
Lily is the one James “nicked” aka stole, the one struggling against him, the one trying to escape but being grabbed at the last second by James AKA James finally managing to go out with Lily 7th year AKA James making a “particularly difficult catch”.
Lily as symbolized by the Golden Snitch is a really important part of canon that encompasses the whole text, not just SWM, and I promise I have a lot more evidence on that thread, but I'm writing a separate meta regarding that. (For now note that - Lily is the Snitch and Harry is the Seeker, because Lily’s playing hide-and-seek with him throughout the narrative and Harry has to seek her. Try doing Ctrl+ F + Snitch in OoTP and DH and see if you can spot patterns/hidden allusions to Lily).
3.0 My Analysis on SWM
(This section is most directly my personal thoughts)
It starts off with James attacking Snape specifically to get her attention, or at least, that's one of the reasons (“Snape lay panting on the ground. James and Sirius advanced on him, wands up, James glancing over his shoulder at the girls at the water’s edge as he went”). This is already a red flag. To clarify, in the context of the war and the atmosphere at Hogwarts, imo James attacking Snape even when Lily happens to be nearby isn't the issue, but doing something he knows upsets her specifically to get her attention is.
Second, he asks her out publicly, in front of a literal crowd. This is another red flag. This also goes back to him the imagery of him showing off with the Snitch - a.k.a showing off with Lily, liking the attention of others when he tries to "catch" her.
And the biggest red flag - blackmailing her with "I'll stop hurting Snape if you go out with me".
Now, I will say that it's questionable whether he 100% meant it or if it was a spur of the moment thing. I say this because when she says no, in a pretty dramatic and cutting way no less, he doesn't seem upset specifically by that. He just sort of moves on. (What he is upset by and his reaction to it, I'll get to in a bit). That said, if Lily had actually said yes, and they had had sex, that would've been rape.
Whether James asked her out repeatedly / harassed her, idk, I think it could go either way, from Sirius's words and SWM overall it is at least clear James making his interest in her known in showy and obnoxious ways even if he didn't directly ask her out before, despite her making her disinterest in him known just as much. But the way he asked her out in this scene is bad enough, even if it was just once.
Then James continues to call after her despite her speech making it clear she’s very infuriated and very not into him.
Then James doesn’t get why she’s upset at his behavior and goes “what is it with her” (putting the blame on her for her reaction) and then is so enraged by her rejection that he escalates his attack on Snape. This does not have great implications for what he’d do to Lily at other times when she similarly does something he doesn’t like.
As for Lily’s reaction in the scene, I think every word frankly speaks for itself regarding how much she dislikes James.
Lily compares going out with James to dating an animal at the bottom of the lake - this evokes the idea that dating James is equivalent to “drowning in despair”.
Also see how affectionately she talks about Harry's flight vs. the words about James (and this is a particularly sick burn towards James given Lily has been able to fly unsupported since she was 9 years old and Snape can probably fly unsupported by then too - Lily truly does NOT like this man).
“Messing up your hair because you think it looks cool to look like you’ve just got off your broomstick, showing off with that stupid Snitch, walking down corridors and hexing anyone who annoys you just because you can — I’m surprised your broomstick can get off the ground with that fat head on it. You make me SICK.” (OoTP) Thank you thank you, for Harry’s birthday present! It was his favorite by far. One year old and already zooming along on a toy broomstick, he looked so pleased with himself, I’m enclosing a picture so you can see. You know it only rises about two feet off the ground, but he nearly killed the cat and he smashed a horrible vase Petunia sent me for Christmas (DH)
“She turned on her heel and hurried away.” - Lily is hurrying away from James, she’s running away from him, she’s the Snitch trying to escape from him.
4.0 Harry's reflections
Harry muses on the Marauders' attack on Snape, and then we have these paragraphs right after it:
Harry reminded himself that Lily had intervened; his mother had been decent, yet the memory of the look on her face as she had shouted at James disturbed him quite as much as anything else. She had clearly loathed James and Harry simply could not understand how they could have ended up married. Once or twice he even wondered whether James had forced her into it... (OoTP)
To reiterate - Harry was just as disturbed by James’s treatment of Lily and Lily’s loathing of him as he was by the extreme violence towards Snape in that scene. The text clearly puts those things on the same level and on par with each other here.
And to reiterate again, JKR… literally had Harry wonder if James FORCED Lily to marry him. There was zero reason for JKR to include this if Jily was ever meant to be read positively. This isn't a "cute hate to love" type of framing, JKR clearly framed Jily as disturbing. The idea of James potentially forcing her, Lily literally saying she wouldn't go out with him if it was a choice between him and the Squid - the language here is consistently of force, of lack of choice.
Then Harry's misery about the violence towards Snape is again linked to his misery about James and Lily:
For nearly five years the thought of his father had been a source of comfort, of inspiration. Whenever someone had told him he was like James he had glowed with pride inside. And now... now he felt cold and miserable at the thought of him. (OoTP) “How come she married him?” Harry asked miserably. “She hated him!” (OoTP)
The descriptions of the struggling Golden Snitch a.k.a. Lily trying to escape from James is also likened to Snape struggling to escape from the Marauders' attack on him:
He put his hand in his pocket and took out a struggling Golden Snitch. Snape was trying to get up, but the jinx was still operating on him; he was struggling, as though bound by invisible ropes. “There you go,” he said, as Snape struggled to his feet again, “you’re lucky Evans was here, Snivellus —” (OoTP)
And another hint JKR might've put in is James greeting them both similarly ("All right, Snivellus?" and "All right, Evans?"). Now, regarding Harry's conversation with Sirius and Remus:
“If we were sometimes arrogant little berks, you mean,” said Sirius. Lupin smiled. "He kept messing up his hair,” said Harry in a pained voice. Sirius and Lupin laughed. “I’d forgotten he used to do that,” said Sirius affectionately. “Was he playing with the Snitch?” said Lupin eagerly. “Yeah,” said Harry, watching uncomprehendingly as Sirius and Lupin beamed reminiscently. “Well... I thought he was a bit of an idiot.” “Of course he was a bit of an idiot!” said Sirius bracingly. “We were all idiots! Well — not Moony so much,” he said fairly (OoTP)
Notice the language here when they talk about James in the memory - Sirius and Remus are smiling, they’re laughing, they’re affectionate, they're speaking of him eagerly, they’re beaming reminiscently - even at the stuff that i.e. Sirius was annoyed by in the actual memory (James showing off with the Snitch, etc). You can even feel the affection in Sirius going "we were all idiots <3”.
But then we get to the topic of James and Lily, and that totally and completely ends:
“And,” said Harry doggedly, determined to say everything that was on his mind now he was here, “he kept looking over at the girls by the lake, hoping they were watching him!” “Oh, well, he always made a fool of himself whenever Lily was around,” said Sirius, shrugging. “He couldn’t stop himself showing off whenever he got near her.” “How come she married him?” Harry asked miserably. “She hated him!” “Nah, she didn’t,” said Sirius. “She started going out with him in seventh year,” said Lupin. “Once James had deflated his head a bit,” said Sirius. “And stopped hexing people just for the fun of it,” said Lupin. (OoTP)
They are not effusive at all. Sirius in fact sounds just as unimpressed and critical of James as he sounded in the actual memory. (“Bad luck, Prongs”, “Reading between the lines, I’d say she thinks you’re a bit conceited, mate”, the double meaning of Sirius telling James to put the Snitch away).
Sirius emphasizes James showing off for Lily and trying to get her attention and "making a fool of himself" (again, not positive wording), and it’s only when Harry brings up Lily seeming to hate him that Lily’s feelings are addressed at all, and all Sirius says is “nah she didn’t hate him”, never saying she liked or loved him and painting it as very one-sided.
This text uses the word “love” very, very intentionally - and it’s never once used for Lily’s feelings towards James (or even vice versa, frankly).
And in this conversation, the emphasis here quickly goes to the fact that James broke his promise to Lily (sort of evoking a broken wedding vow, etc):
“You think you’re funny,” she said coldly. “But you’re just an arrogant, bullying toerag, Potter. Leave him alone.” “I will if you go out with me, Evans,” said James quickly. “Go on... Go out with me, and I’ll never lay a wand on old Snivelly again.” (OoTP) “Even Snape?” said Harry. “Well,” said Lupin slowly, “Snape was a special case. I mean, he never lost an opportunity to curse James, so you couldn’t really expect James to take that lying down, could you?” “And my mum was okay with that?” “She didn’t know too much about it, to tell you the truth,” said Sirius. “I mean, James didn’t take Snape on dates with her and jinx him in front of her, did he?” (OoTP)
Again the language here, it's clearly making an intentional reference to James's "promise/agreement" to never attack Snape if Lily goes out on a date with him.
This is likened to Voldemort's broken promise to Lily - Lily says "Leave him alone" three times before James says "I will if you go out with me", just as Lily offers her own life for Harry's three times (take me, kill me instead, I'll do anything) and says Not Harry seven times and Voldemort seals the agreement by taking Lily’s life, and then “breaks that promise” whenever he tries to kill Harry (Voldemort's broken promise to Lily is brought up many times specifically in OoTP in coded language, part of why the parallel seems intentional, but I’ll get to that in other metas).
To clarify, I don’t think James did anything wrong there - certainly by 7th year Snape would’ve been a marked Death Eater who already murdered people, I’m just pointing out what the text is trying to do here.
5.0 Some comparisons
5.1 Wearing masks with each other
It's emphasized that Sirius is the one James stops showing off for, not Lily, and that James's hair is different and voice is different when he speaks to Lily - basically, that James is wearing a mask with Lily:
Harry had the distinct impression that Sirius was the only one for whom James would have stopped showing off. “Leave him ALONE!” James and Sirius looked around. James’s free hand jumped to his hair again. “All right, Evans?” said James, and the tone of his voice was suddenly pleasant, deeper, more mature. (OoTP)
Again, none of this is positive framing for Jily. In comparison, in the Prince's Tale we have Snape taking off his long coat and is comfortable wearing his mother's clothes in front of Lily. In other words, unlike James who puts on a mask with her, Snape is taking the mask off with Lily.
And as James wears a mask with Lily, Lily wears a mask with him, because in the death scene memory, her face is covered by her long hair while she speaks to James, vs. the Lily from the Resurrection Stone who pushes her hair back to look at Harry.
This is Lily setting the terms of who is and isn't allowed to see her - because similarly, she's letting Sirius see her face (I'm enclosing a picture so you can see - the picture which not only includes Harry but also Lily herself laughing), she's repeatedly described as smiling at Snape, and of course she's letting Harry see her face, yet with James, we have these passages:
“Evans!” James shouted after her, “Hey, EVANS!” But she didn’t look back. (OoTP) his mother had been decent, yet the memory of the look on her face as she had shouted at James disturbed him quite as much as anything else (OoTP) A door opened and the mother entered, saying words he could not hear, her long dark-red hair falling over her face. Now the father scooped up the son and handed him to the mother. (DH)
In direct contrast to:
Harry heard Snape let out a tiny groan. Lily took off the hat, handed it back to Professor McGonagall, then hurried toward the cheering Gryffindors, but as she went she glanced back at Snape, and there was a sad little smile on her face. (DH) “Your mother’s coming…” he said quietly. “She wants to see you… it will be all right… hold on…” (GoF) One year old and already zooming along on a toy broomstick, he looked so pleased with himself, I’m enclosing a picture so you can see. (DH) but we've had to pack away all the ornaments and make sure we don't take our eyes off him when he gets going. (DH) Lily’s smile was widest of all. She pushed her long hair back as she drew close to him, and her green eyes, so like his, searched his face hungrily, as though she would never be able to look at him enough. (DH)
This is especially notable given the obvious significance of Lily's eyes and Lily's gaze as a "window to her soul" and most reflective of her true emotions.
This is echoed in the only true James and Lily emphasis in The Prince’s Tale being that of James not paying attention to Lily:
One of the boys sharing the compartment, who had shown no interest at all in Lily or Snape until that point, looked around at the word, and Harry, whose attention had been focused entirely on the two beside the window, saw his father (DH)
Again, James is 11, this is totally understandable and in fact it’d be weird if he was interested in Lily since he was 11, but I’m just pointing out how the language around James and Lily is consistently negative.
5.2 The Bloody Baron
“She sent a man who had long loved me, though I spurned his advances, to find me. She knew that he would not rest until he had done so." Harry waited. She drew a deep breath and threw back her head. “He tracked me to the forest where I was hiding. When I refused to return with him, he became violent. The Baron was always a hot-tempered man. Furious at my refusal, jealous of my freedom, he stabbed me.” (DH) “What is it with her?” said James, trying and failing to look as though this was a throwaway question of no real importance to him. “Reading between the lines, I’d say she thinks you’re a bit conceited, mate,” said Sirius. “Right,” said James, who looked furious now, “right —” There was another flash of light, and Snape was once again hanging upside down in the air. “Who wants to see me take off Snivelly’s pants?” (OoTP)
A note on patronuses and extracanon statements
I'm aware JKR has said Lily was attracted to James in SWM in extracanon, and has framed Jily's patronuses positively in relation to each other. However, these statements was years after the books were published - and it's clear JKR often changes her opinions about her characters and dynamics very often i.e. the way she framed Ron and Sirius in the early books vs the later books, so it's likely something similar happened with Jily in the other direction.
In the actual books, the doe patronus is only ever shown and discussed to emphasize Snape and Lily’s bond, it’s never discussed in relation to James and Lily. The stag patronus is firmly about Harry’s connection with his father.
As for the argument that Lily noticing James showing off with the Snitch signifies she’s into him - if some boy is constantly trying to get your attention and being obnoxious about it, you’d be hyper aware of his presence regardless if you were attracted to him. Snape is also hyper aware of the Marauders, Sirius was likewise watching Snape, etc. There is, of course the blush in her conversation with Snape - I'll get to that in a separate meta.
This is another meta about Jily as potentially abusive, I don’t agree with all of it but it’s worth reading.

Parties
Pairing: Sirius Black + reader
Word count: 1296 (I think I'm really loving these short and fluffy one shots)
Summary: You and Sirius fool around (not sexually) at a pureblood party
Warnings: light and funny hits and smacks, and nothing else I believe but lmk if you notice anything I didn't
Hey! If you think this didn't completely suck, feel free to check out my masterlist.

"On a scale of one to ten, how likely is it that one of the dads is going to get drunk and go off the hook?"
"Is there a number above ten that I can use?"
"No."
"Then ten, like you even have to ask." I reply with a grin at the absurd question. Every time there's a party one of the dads get drunk and off the hook, last time it was Avery Sr. His wife had to pull him off the table. I ask, "The question isn't if, it's who."
"Avery." Sirius replies looking at the man, smiling, no doubt picturing his red face wife trying to pull him down the table where he's swinging his tie on. I scoff, "Two times in a row? No way. I think Mrs. Avery has him drinking apple juice tonight."
"Well then who do you think it is?" Sirius asks, and I hum. I look around the room, looking for the older men. Mulciber has been drinking a lot tonight, but he's talking to Malfoy which means business so no way it's him. Then I hit the jackpot. I grin and say, "Your father."
"My father? No way, he's never gone crazy ever." Sirius scoffs and leans back in his chair. I lean closer to his side and start to explain as I fix my eyes to Mr. Black. I explain, "He's gone flushed, and he's not talking anymore which means that he knows that he's going to slur on his words, and he's already taken off his jacket."
"I think you're an idiot and that it's going to be Nott." Sirius says, and I punch him in the arm for calling me and idiot, then shake my head. I tut, "I don't think so-" I say in a sing-songy voice, then continue, "He holds his alcohol well."
"No, he doesn't. A few years ago, he was made a mess." Sirius says, but I still don't agree. I grab my drink from the table, and take a tiny sip before saying, "That was because he had signed the divorce papers from his first wife that morning, other wise he never would have drank so much."
"I still think he's a better guess than my father." Sirius says, rolling his eyes. He hates talking about his father, and he is absolutely right, he's a horrible man. I fold my arms and then suggest, "Alright, what do you want to bet on- and not money, merlin knows we both have enough of that already."
Sirius hums in thought, as he thinks of ideas. One of the perks of being in a pureblood family is the insane amount of money carried from one generation to another, one of the faults, the tedious parties, Sirius makes them better though. He clicks his fingers and I can almost see a light bulb go off in his head. He starts, "A kiss-"
"I already give you those-"
"And a date where I control everything." Sirius grins, and I groan, and cover my face with my hands. I groan, "But you're going to pick a shit place, like madam puddifoot's or something other absurd café."
"If you're scared that you'll lose, I can change it." Sirius taunts, and I look back at Mr. Black and he's already loosening his tie. I grin then hold out my hand to him. I say, "You're on."
Sirius takes my hand, shakes it one time with a firm grip, then hauls me close to him to give me a kiss on the cheek. I yelp, and then put my hand on his thigh to stabilize me enough to go back to sitting properly in my seat. I smack his thigh. Merlin knows what my mother would've done if she saw that.
"And if I win, I want full control over your hair for a month." I say, and watch that smirk of his fade away instantly. He grabs his hair, desperately and shakes his head. He says, "No way, that's same value as one date."
"If you're scared that you'll lose, I can change it." I say in a deeper voice, imitating him and saying his exact words. He gives me a glare, but folds his arms and pouts in his seat. I chuckle at his reaction.
The music is quiet, it's only the voices of chatter that really fill up the room. I look all around the room and notice that Regulus is with one of his friends chatting about something, I recognize the friend as Evan Rosier. Sirius taps my shoulder to interrupt my train of thought.
"Wanna get out of here?" He asks, and he already knows my answer because I soon as I say yes, he's already got my hand in his hand. He stands up, and we look around each of us making sure that none of our family members can see us.
Sirius leads me out of the room and into a corridor. This is Nott Sr.'s house, we knew only bits of it. We get out of the room, and Sirius presses me against on of the walls. He kisses me feverishly and I return it with a smile. His hands caress my waist and they go up and down and up and down, driving me insane.
"so this is why you wanted to get out." I tease, and he goes back to kissing me in seconds. I can't say I'm really complaining though. He breaths out in between kisses, "Can't blame me for wanting to spend time with you."
We part for some much needed air and Sirius looks around. He sees the closest door and he goes towards it, pulling me with him. He says, "Now, what could this be? A bedroom maybe?"
He opens the door and we're meet with the clatter of pots and pains and tiny house elves moving around everywhere, trying to get dinner ready. Sirius sighs in disappointment, and he turns to leave, but I break free of his grip when I see..."Scones!"
I trail towards them and grab a few off of one of the plates that the house elves were carrying. I shoved one in my mouth, and it tasted good. Sirius grabbed one from my hands and started eating it himself. I frowned at him and his reply was poking a tongue out at me.
I finish my scone and maybe two more, then I go to sit on one of the chairs. Sirius pouts when he notices there's no chairs. He grabs me, and lifts me up. I start screaming, "Sirius Orion Black, you better put me down right now. You babbling, bumbling, baboon-"
"You're the only good thing my parents have ever done for me, and quite possibly the best thing that has ever happened to me." Sirius says in one breath to shut me up. He always does this, randomly he just spills out bursts of emotion. He feels them at random times, but Sirius has never been good at expressing emotions, so I appreciate them when they come.
He sits down and puts me on his lap. I smile at his words and lean in to press a soft kiss to his lips. Sirius parts abruptly, "Did you just call me a baboon?"
"Oh no, we need some remedies, quickly!" One of the house elves, enter quickly into the room, and the rest of them bustle quickly trying to find a remedy for whomever just got severely drunk out there. Another house elf shouts, "Who was it this time?"
"Mr. Black."
"Yes!" I shout in triumph and get off of Sirius' lap to preform a victory dance. I clap and dance around, and I point at him and grin, "Get ready to have your hair green!"
"No!"
an: maybe I am starting this marauders era for me, I'm really enjoying it too. I think I should keep writing about them for a while + Reggie of course

Read on A03
Written for day 1 of Jily Week 2024
“How does he manage to look like that straight off his broomstick?” Lily Evans hissed to Marlene McKinnon. “It’s an absolute fuckin' tragedy!”
The girls were huddled in a corner of the common room, a short distance from the group of boys clustered by the fire, still decked out in their Quidditch gear. At the center of the chaos was James Potter, gesticulating wildly as if he were casting spells with his hands, while tiny magical figures darted around him, mimicking his every move. The only girls on the team, Fawcett and Fawn, the third-year twins, sat on the periphery, barely paying attention.
“Pay attention!” James barked at them, and they looked up, their faces a picture of remorse.
“Ugh,” Lily muttered, tilting her head towards the ceiling as if seeking divine intervention.
She had an uncharacteristically feral appreciation for the deep, resonant tone in his voice, but it seemed he almost regretted it, as he nervously ran a hand through his hair. Lily absently tugged at the ends of her frayed French braid, struggling to tear her eyes away from James and his gloriously disheveled hair. It was a love-hate relationship—she adored the glorious mess of it but loathed how it made it impossible to ignore her feelings for him.
"What’s the matter with you?" Marlene asked, barely glancing up from her Witch Weekly.
"James Potter’s the matter with me!" Lily nudged her urgently. "Just look at the state of him!"
Marlene glanced up, surveyed James, and then returned to her magazine. “He looks normal to me, Lily. See? He’s even ranting about quidditch.”
He was ranting loudly, almost everyone in the common room was watching. A few people snickered, knowing he was feeling the pressure of the upcoming match against Slytherin. It was James’ only match each year where he grew worried, not that he’d admit it out loud.
“I’m not talking about his ranting, Marlene,” Lily huffed. “I’m talking about his hair.”
“Aye,” Marlene mused. “I told Mary McDonald that half the boys in our year need haircuts—James Potter and Sirius Black especially.”
Lily let out a strangled, but still hushed, “you want James to cut his fucking hair?! Marley?! Are you kidding me? James Potter’s hair looks like it came out of a fucking quidditch magazine. Look at it. So wavy and perfectly messed up. It’s practically hairography.”
“What the fuck is hairography?” Marlene asked as she threw herself into the spare beanbag chair behind them.
“Like pornography, but hair.” Lily fell into the beanbag next to her. “I mean look at it. Have you ever seen a lad with better looking hair? That’s the hair of a snogging icon, I’m telling you.”
“You'd best be tellin' him that,” Marlene waved, “I can’t be bothered to care about anyone’s hair if it doesn’t come with a set of tits.”
“Just because you’re a lesbian, Marlene, doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate a man like James.” Lily shot back.
“He’s just a boy,” Marlene said. “In two years you’ll be bored of him and his mediocre hair.”
Lily said confidently, “Nah, I bet the hair in the streets, matches the hair in the sheets.”
Marlene shot an eyebrow up. “He’s a rich nerd who happens to be good at catching a ball, Lily, I just don’t see the reason you’re so caught up on him all of a sudden.”
“No one else has that hair.” Lily sighed, placing her chin in her hand, supported by her elbow on her knee. “Or those biceps, God, remember when he used to be rail thin?!”
“He’s still a rail, he just got older.” Marlene blew her yellow bangs away from her forehead. “He’s not even conventionally attractive, not like Sirius Black. James Potter’s hair looks like a rat's nest compared to Black.”
“James’ hair looks like James just got off a broomstick.” Lily said just as James ruffled his curls, making them even messier.
Marlene smirked before she sang, “or like he just got off you.”
Red snuck up Lily’s neck at the suggestion. “There are first years nearby, Marley.”
“You’re the one who compared his hair to porn.”
“It was just an expression,” Lily argued. “Besides, he doesn’t even fancy me like that anymore.”
Marlene actually snorted from disbelief. “Says who?”
“Says everyone,” Lily muttered with an eye roll. “The whole school was talking about how he was at Hogsmede with Tina Karloff just last weekend.” Lily’s nose scrunched up unhappily. “Remus Lupin said James took Tina to see the shrieking shack up close just to scare her. You know why he’d want to scare her? To freaking hold her hand, Marlene! It’s Boy Flirting 101! Trust me! I know boys!”
“Everyone knows boys better than me,” Marlene winked. “But either way, you’re being a drama queen. Just because he took out another girl doesn’t mean his crush on you is gone.”
“That’s exactly what it means.” Lily crossed her arms. “He’s gone and moved on to Tina Karloff, who probably doesn’t even appreciate his hairography.”
“What kind of name is Tina anyways?” Marlene chuckled as she reopened her magazine. “Imagine having sex with a name like that. There’s no sexy way to moan ‘Tina’ in the heat of the ‘mo.”
Lily crossed her legs as she replied, “but Tina’s a catch, Marley. Just two weeks ago I saw she had the Jezza Witch hat from Diagon Alley and she looked fuckin' amazing in it! Plus, she’s wearing a C cup bra now, according to her roommates. That is the largest in our year besides me.”
“She probably stuffs her bra with tissues.” Marlene mused wickedly. “You still have the best tits, Evans, take it from me. And they're real.”
“Tina Karloff’s tits are real,” Lily hit her friend’s arm, “we see enough cleavage since she never buttons her shirt all the way up.”
“How’d Tina Karloff afford a Jezza hat anyways?” Marlene asked jealously as she furiously tabbed to her lost magazine article, still caught up on Lily’s points against herself. “They’re at least five galleons! I thought Tina’s Dad worked at the misuse of the muggle artifacts department. They get paid like shit.”
But Lily didn’t answer her friend. James Potter had stopped talking. Another member of the team had taken center stage, while the handsome Quidditch captain leaned against the fireplace, his eyes fixed on her. She squeaked and looked away as soon as their eyes met.
“Oh Merlin, Lily,” Marlene laughed, throwing her head back when she noticed who was staring. “Just go ask him for a quick snog and stop acting like a wean who’s seen the boogeyman!”
“But what if I snog him and then don’t like him anymore?”
“What?!” Marlene dropped her magazine in disbelief.
“Come on, Marlene,” Lily said. “It’d be just like Sarah Jackson. She went on and on for weeks about Amos Diggory until Amos finally took her out. Sarah told me that when he kissed her, it was like kissing a waterfall—he had so much drool, she nearly threw up right then and there. Can you blame me for being worried James Potter will be a waterfall kisser?”
“There’s no such thing as a waterfall kisser.”
“How would you know? Have you ever even kissed someone?”
Marlene shot Lily the finger. “Not many openly gay girls around for me to snog, are there Lily?”
Sheepishly Lily apologized, “sorry, Marley.”
“Just go talk to him before I shove you into the broom closet with him,” Marlene pleaded. “And for Merlin’s sake, leave hairography out of the conversation.”
Lily groaned but got up from her spot. “Fine, I’m going,” she muttered, tossing a half-hearted glare at Marlene, who just grinned and waved her off. Lily wasn’t sure how she ended up in these situations. One moment, she was monologuing to Marlene, and the next, she was being forcefully encouraged to navigate the tangled mess of feelings in her head.
She wandered over to him from her safe bean bag chair, her heart pounding as she reached the thick of the quidditch players. And there he was, leaning against the fireplace, eyes zeroing in on her as she pushed between his two beaters so she could stand beside him. Lily felt her palms go clammy.
What was she doing?
But before she could turn and retreat, James smiled.
“Hey, Evans,” he sang out, moving away from the fireplace toward her. “What’s up?”
Lily fiddled with a strand of her hair, hoping her face didn’t betray how nervous she felt. “Nothing much, just—uh…” She glanced down at her shoes, feeling ridiculous.
“Yes?” He encouraged.
And then, Merlin smite her, she actually said out loud, “I like your hair.”
James blinked, caught off guard. “My hair?”
Lily nodded, not daring to look at him. “Yeah. It’s… fluffy.”
He scratched the back of his head, clearly not used to being on the receiving end of compliments. A faint blush crept onto his cheeks. “Uh, thanks. I like your hair too. It’s… really nice.”
Lily finally looked up and smiled, feeling a strange warmth spread through her chest. There was something disarmingly endearing about how flustered he seemed. Maybe Marlene had been right. Maybe he did still fancy her.
"Really?" she asked, more to fill the silence than anything.
"Yeah, really," James said, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. "It, uh… always looks perfect. I don’t know how you manage it."
Lily's stomach fluttered, and she let out a small laugh. "Well, I’ve got this potion..."
James grinned, his usual confidence creeping back. "Sleekeazy’s?"
Her eyes widened. "How’d you know?"
His grin grew even wider. "That’s the hair potion my dad invented."
"No way!" Lily gaped at him, incredulous. "You’re full of dragon shit."
James chuckled, ruffling his famously messy hair. "No joke. Dad’s been trying to tame this wild mane his whole life, and passed it down to me."
Lily raised an eyebrow. "And what’s your excuse for the hurricane you call hair? Don’t you use the potion?"
“Nah.” James leaned in closer, his nose almost brushing hers. "I embrace the chaos."
Lily’s breath caught as James leaned in, the warmth between them almost tangible. For a moment, her mind went blank, thoughts of excellent hairography and disastrous snogging vanishing entirely. Instead, she found herself hyper-aware of his closeness—the gold in his eyes, the crooked smirk on his lips. He had freckles dotting his nose from the summer sun. She’d never noticed that before.
"Is that so?" she managed, her voice softer than she intended.
"Mhm," James murmured, his gaze dropping briefly to her lips before flicking back up to her eyes. "Keeps things interesting, don’t you think?"
Her heart raced, but she refused to let him see her nerves. Instead, she smiled. "I suppose it does."
For a brief moment, the air between them crackled with something unspoken, almost charged with a deeper connection. But before it could escalate, a hand landed on both of their shoulders, and they jumped in surprise. Sirius grinned widely between them.
"Sorry!" he said, squeezing Lily's shoulder and shooting James a mischievous look. "Just... checking in."
James groaned, covering his face with his hands. "Sirius."
Lily bit her lip, quickly averting her gaze as Sirius eyed her with a knowing smirk, clearly wondering what was happening between them.
"Well," she said, straightening up and trying to hide her growing blush, "I should probably get going. But... thanks for the chat."
Peeking out from behind his fingers, James half-waved. "I’m down to discuss hair anytime, Evans.”
Sirius tugged on Lily’s braid mischievously. “Has he told you that he has a thing for redheads?”
“Oh, I think Marlene is calling me.” Lily squeaked, making her untimely departure as swiftly as possible. “Bye!”
As she pulled away from Sirius' grip, a wave of relief and embarrassment washed over her. Maybe things with James weren’t as complicated as she thought. Yet, judging by the disapproving glance James threw at Sirius, it was obvious he had more he wanted to say. She wondered if he did actually have a thing for redheads.
She cast a glance over her shoulder just as James wrestled Sirius into a headlock, Sirius’ laughter echoing loudly. James looked up and caught her eye just in time. She offered a soft smile, and he smiled back, releasing Sirius so abruptly that the troublemaker crashed to the floor with a yelp. She waved once more, feeling a flutter in her stomach that she couldn't quite ignore when James waved back. Something very much like butterflies danced inside her as she nervously twisted her red braid, considering that maybe she’d find another reason to speak to him again soon.
Or maybe she’d just back him up into an alcove when no one was looking, kiss him, and finally run her fingers through that magnificent hair of his. If Sirius black was right, he’d probably enjoy tangling up in her hair as well. Lily smiled to herself.
Hairography, indeed.

i like the headcanon that regulus dresses like a posh victorian boy, full three-piece suit and all, but the reg i have in my mind is a modern au reg who wears oversized hoodies and regular jeans. he sleeps in old baggy band t-shirts that once belonged to his brother and tiny shorts. he wears little silver hoop earrings and that chain necklace with sirius' name that he keeps hidden. he never goes anywhere without his noise-cancelling headphones and his old little notebook in which he writes his sad boy poetry, but only with a black ink pen - he'd rather die with his thoughts than write them in blue ink. he puts his head against the window in the bus and follows the rain drops with his eyes. he looks just like a lil guy - you'll never guess he has the sharpest tongue and the meanest stare.

Prompt 10 - Only One Bed/Room
@wolfstarmicrofic May 10, word count 860
Sirius and Remus had been sent away to a conference. They were to stay overnight and take notes of future implementations that could benefit the company.
They didn’t know each other well, Remus only having been at the company for a month, but they got on well enough. Remus, Sirius had found, was a tough nut to crack. He didn’t like to give up personal information, and small talk didn’t come easily to him.
Sirius pulled into the hotel's car park and turned off the engine. They got their bags out of the boot and headed to reception.
“Okay, Mr Black. I’ve got you and Mr Lupin in room 210. There is a lift to your left or stairs to the right if you prefer. If you need anything else, there will be someone here at all times.” The smiley receptionist beamed at him with bright red lipstick coating her lips.
“Wait!” Remus exclaimed. “Why is there only one room?” He looked horrified. The smile had faltered a bit on the receptionist's face as she double-checked with her computer. “We were almost fully booked when your office booked in, you got the last room in fact.” She looked at Sirius with a worried look on her face. “Erm,” She paused, trying to find the words. “There’s only one bed in that room.” She flinched when Remus slammed his hand down on the desk.
“Well that’s just peachy.” He growled. “Is there seriously nothing else?” She typed away on her keyboard.
“No, Sir. We’re fully booked all weekend.
“Let's at least go look at the room. You never know we might be able to make it work.” Sirius picked up Remus’s suitcase and purposefully walked towards the lift. Remus eventually followed once the doors pinged open.
They stood in silence as the lift travelled the short journey between floors. Sirius fumbled with the key card and opened the door to their room.
The bed was tiny. It was meant to be a double, but Sirius was certain it couldn’t be a standard one. There wasn’t even a sofa, just a metal chair.
“Nope,” Remus said and turned to leave. Sirius grabbed the back of his jumper before he could get very far. “Hey, let go!”
“It’s only two nights,” Sirius said. “Do you really have that much of a problem sharing a bed with another man?”
“No, Sirius,” Remus rolled his eyes. “It’s just—Oh, never mind.” He stormed past Sirius and dumped his bag on the bed. That seemed to settle it.
“Right well, I’m going for a quick shower and then do you want to go down to the restaurant?” He asked as he pulled out his toiletry bag. Remus just grunted, which Sirius took as a yes.
Showered and feeling better after their long drive, Sirius emerged from the bathroom and found the room empty. He wandered down to the restaurant and found Remus sitting at the bar with a beer. He flagged down the bartender and asked for the same and another one for Remus.
Dinner was quiet. Remus barely said two words, but at least the food was good. After another beer apiece, Sirius was ready for bed.
“I’m off up,” he yawned. Remus seemed reluctant to leave the bar.
“I’ll finish this and come up.” He told Sirius. That works out fine, Sirius thought. At least that way he could get ready for bed and not feel awkward about it. He brushed his teeth, changed into his baggy lounge pants and got under the covers.
The bed may be small, but it was ridiculously comfortable. Sirius snuggled into the plump pillows and felt his eyes already drifting shut. Then there was a loud knock at the door, which yanked him from his dozing state. He got out of bed and opened the door. They’d only been given one key card.
Remus stood there and gaped at Sirius. Sirius had a myriad of tattoos on his body and Remus’s eyes darted across the visible ones. He groaned and darted past Sirius, locking himself in the bathroom.
“Do you want your bag?” Sirius asked through the door.
“Yes please,” Remus replied, his voice slightly higher than usual. He opened the door wide enough to snatch the bag from Sirius’s hand. “Put a t-shirt on, for crying out loud.” He snapped before slamming the door in Sirius’s face. Sirius had no idea what he’d done to piss Remus off, but he went and grabbed a t-shirt from his bag and slipped it over his head before he got back into bed. He fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. He didn’t even hear Remus leave the bathroom.
The next morning, he woke half on top of Remus with his limbs tangled with the other man's. He carefully tried to disentangle himself without waking Remus, but those honey eyes met his with a scowl. Sirius swallowed.
“Sorry, I must have rolled in my sleep,” Remus didn’t say anything and got out of bed before locking himself in the bathroom again.
This was going to be a long weekend, and they still had another night to go.
