Everything That Rides Below The Surface
"Get in the damn car," Dean screams for the third time.
He shoves the gun in Kaia's face.
Subconsciously, the hunter can register Sam's placating gestures and Jack's horrified expression.
If this was any other day, he might have cared about heeding the advice of one and setting a good example for the other, but not now.
He did not grow up in this miserable life, working a thankless job, with a hole in his chest only to have it rip him apart 33 years down the road.
He meant what he said: he was going to have his Mother back no matter what.
Chuck help any little Dreamwalkers that stood in his way.
The girl does the one thing he is not antecipating, though.
The one thing that disarms him.
With a firmer grip than Dean would have expected from a teenager of her height and weight, Kaia grabs the barrel of the gun and touches the muzzle to her forehead.
She looks him straight in the eye, resolute. "Then, do it,” she says. "Do it. Shoot me."
Dean just stares, dumbfounded.
He is so unnerved that he nearly does pull the trigger out of surprise.
Kaia takes that as her cue to keep talking.
Or maybe she simply does not care.
"Shoot me, you bastard. You’ll be doing me a favour. You think I give a damn? I have been dealing with this shit since the day I was born. Nightmares. Monsters. Creatures you wouldn't believe. And it's only gotten worse."
There was something in the kid's exhausted, cynic tone that took him back over a decade.
To a little brother crying on the floor over visions he was just beginning to understand.
Back before the Leviathans, the Angels and the Horsemen.
To the helplessness and fear of knowing that this was no flesh wound.
He could not fix this with beer, a movie marathon and half a dozen "Sammies".
It was hard enough to learn to live with weird powers as adults, surrounded by people who were aware of the Supernatural. Good people that would teach you how to fight back and not call you "crazy for simply telling the truth.
He can not imagine what this must be like for Kaia, a normal girl from a normal family with a normal life to go on like this.
Yet, Dean can not allow himself to feel for her.
Not when his Mom is probably being tortured by the other Michael at this very moment.
If his musings show on his face, however, Kaia pays no mind.
"And that is only half of it. My parents fucking handed me over to the State, like so much as trash on the street. You see, being a Dreamwalker comes with this little problem where it is highly advisable that you do not fall asleep because, if you do, you will never want to sleep again. So I took the only option I had. I swallowed pills and I injected every vein that I could reach. I have been drugging myself for years, just so I can sleep through the night. I am poisoning myself every day. When my parents found out about my extra-curriular activities, they immediately sent me from rehabilitation center to rehabilitation center, nevermind the fact that me keeping waking up bloody and bruised is the real problem here. Still, it could be worse. No, wait, it is - and that is the best part, listen up - do you know what happens to kids in those places? Kids the staff know will not bother talking because, hey, 'who is going to believe what a stupid junkie says, right?' Do you know? So, yeah, go ahead, shoot me. No, seriously, shoot me. Because I am just done."
Jack can only stare as Dean lowers the gun.
He knew that humans could get hurt.
Sick.
Die.
He never even imagined that they could break.
Sam watches as Jack moves his hands as if he is holding a sword. He is not close enough to understand what he is saying, but the wind carries a distinctive buzzing to his ears.
Bless his heart, the Nephilim is probably trying to cheer up Kaia with tales of his favorite Star Wars movie. It is a privilege to have the chance to parent such a kind-hearted boy.
In hindsight, Sam can not believe how he could have ever thought that Jack would reach out to a biological father he has nothing in common with. No. Jack is Kelly's. And theirs.
Dean sits down beside him on the park bench, carrying two trays filled with greasy fastfood. "What are you doing?" he asks, leaning towards the screen of his brother's laptop.
"Excuse me, but are we really going to skip over the fact that you pointed a gun to an unarmed, civilian teenage girl that posed no threat to us? Because that's not you, man."
Dean unwrapped a burguer. "If we can skip over the fact that you stood by and watched while I pointed a gun to said unarmed, civilian teenage girl that was no threat to us..."
Sam pinched his nose. Touché. "Look, we all want Mom back. But kidnapping kids is not the answer. And she would agree. Kaia is the victim here. It is our job to help her."
The older Winchester laughed. "The girl is suicidal, Sam. Uses drugs. Has no one on her corner. And a very shitty gift. She is beyond any kind of help that you or I can give her."
"Like that's ever stopped us before. Look, Kaia was telling the truth, not that I ever thought she was lying, but there is more to it: she has been a Ward of the State for six years"
'Fuck," Dean thinks. That is a long time to go without a family, especially for a kid. 'Still not our problem, though', he tells himself for the umpteenth time. Mom is their priority.
"So?" Dean manages to get out, eating with gusto. Dean has always been a messy eater, but Sam can see it in his shaking hands and subject dodging tactics. He feels remorse.
This is the closest that Sam will ever get to feeling grateful for his older brother's mile wide guilt complex. If he feels regret about threatening Kaia, then that means he cares.
If he cares, it means that he is not so far gone that he can not be brought back to himself. So that when they do get their Mother back, they do not have any explaining to do.
She can have two mostly whole sons. "That means she is eligible to be adopted by 'upstanding, law abbiding members of the society.'" Sam explains, and lets the idea sink in.
Dean frowns. "Come on, Sammy. Don't you think we have asked enough of the good sheriff already? I mean, how many rooms do you think she has in that place of hers?"
"We can help keep an eye on her. And she can relate to Alex, Claire and Patience. Their lives were also affected by the supernatural. Besides... I think Jack has a crush on her."
Donna shifted the patrol car into gear, turned on the radio and got into the highway. She was expected in a Sheriff Convention on the other side of the state this weekend.
Instead, here she was, having just said goodbye to the Winchesters and their newest charge, with a precious, young new cargo keeping her company on the passenger's seat.
The first thing she had understood about her sidejob was that when Sam, Dean or Jody call you for help, you drop everything and get to it. Life or Death was the norm, really.
Case in point, sixteen-year-old Kaia Aisha Nieves. Native American kid with a long history of substance abuse and a small spreadsheet of petty theft to sustain said habit.
Poor thing had been committed at the age of 10 for both the addiction and the wild claims of vivid nightmares. Never got a visit or a call from her family. Not even a postcard.
The cop had gotten familiar with tragic lifestories like that from day one on the force. "We can't save everyone," her mentor had said. "Some people just slip through the cracks."
Right. Donna did not survive High School, Police Academy and a bitter divorce to let something like Status Quo or the The System stop her from helping kids in desperate need.
"You're not much for talking, are you? Here," she reaches a hand out to the glove compartment and retrieves one of several tin foil-wrapped sandwiches and passes it to Kaia.
"You look like you haven't eaten in over a day." Come to think of it, considering what they had told her, that was probably true. "We have long way to go before we get to Jody's".
Kaia can not resist long before hunger wins over. She takes two large bites, eyes closing as she savours the food. Donna cheers internally. Grandma's recipe. Worked every time.
"Jody Mills is the sheriff of Sioux Falls. A good friend and all around awesome gal. Got three foster daughters and a cottage by the woods. Nature can do wonders for the soul."
Kaia chortled, as if that was the most absurd thing she had ever head of. "Believe me, it is going to take a lot more than 'open space'. What I need is a freaking lobotomy, lady."
"We will see. Just so you know: I can be very, very stubborn, especially for a good cause". She then let Kaia finish eating and told her to take a long nap before they arrived.
Turning her eyes back to the road - safety first! - sheriff Hanscums vowed to herself that no one, human or not, would hurt Kaia again. They would have to go through her first.

Futures & Pasts | MRR #419
1144 words in this column; most of them are about Mark E. Smith & the Fall, but early ‘80s femme-punk heroines UT & Helter Skelter also get their due. As seen in Maximum Rocknroll #419 (April 2018), which happened to be the issue that caused everyone to collectively flip their shit because they thought MRR wasn’t going to review bands with Bandcamp pages anymore.
I don’t think that I can really get around mentioning Mark E. Smith’s passing a few weeks ago, given that I stole the title for this column from a FALL song, and that my feelings for that band are well-known enough that I had no fewer than five people send me messages right after the news hit, all saying something to the effect of “I immediately thought of you.” I’ve always openly admitted that there’s no way that I’d have learned how to play or even think about music in the way that I do now if it hadn’t been for having my entire consciousness flipped by Perverted By Language and Live at the Witch Trials and countless other FALL records, which helped me come to terms with the fact that it’s okay to write a song that’s just one single part repeated over and over again for its whole duration, and that it’s perfectly acceptable to get that same song out of the bare minimum number of notes (four is good, three can be even better), and that it doesn’t matter that you’re completely self-taught and that all of your “technique” is guided by invented patterns rather than any sort of concrete theory. But Mark E. Smith was also problematic as hell, particularly in regards to the verbal and physical abuse that he notoriously inflicted upon his bandmates, including a handful of his partners. Would I be as willing to listen to the FALL if they were a newly formed basement-dwelling punk group fronted by some asshole dude, instead of the band that essentially wrote the musical textbook that seemingly every DIY post-punk band from the past forty years has referenced at one point or another? Is it possible to acknowledge someone as being a brilliant artist while also recognizing that they’re an unequivocally shitty person? I was actually incredibly comforted to see so many of my friends grappling with that same dilemma as they spoke of how important Mark’s work in the FALL had been to them, because it’s something that’s weighed heavily on my mind for years, thinking back to every time I’ve pulled out “City Hobgoblins” or “Rowche Rumble” at one of my DJ nights, or when my band was recently crashing through a cover of “Big New Prinz,” or when I read Brix Smith Start’s The Rise, The Fall, and The Rise and Steve Hanley’s The Big Midweek, both of which chronicled the complex persona of Mark E. Smith in bluntly honest detail. When a co-worker friend dropped into my office on the afternoon that he passed, we talked about how formative of an influence the FALL had been on both of us as musicians, and I somewhat jokingly said that finding out about Mark’s death was my BOWIE/PRINCE moment, thinking back to how everyone in our workplace immediately went into collective mourning when they heard that those two had died. It’s really a much more fitting analogy than I had initially realized, though—in the midst of the posthumous narratives hailing BOWIE and PRINCE as creative geniuses, many people were rightfully pointing out some of those men’s past abuses and transgressions that shouldn’t be erased from the conversations surrounding their talent and cultural impact. The FALL were a truly mind-bending band, and Mark E. Smith deserves due credit for that, but as the man himself once said, “check the record / check the guy’s track record.”
No Wave heroines UT have just reissued their first two EPs (1984’s Ut and 1985’s Confidential) in a combined 2x12” collection on their own Out Records label. Although they started out in 1978 as part of the same community of New York City’s visual artists and avant-garde noisemakers who formed the core of the era’s downtown scene, the trio left for London in 1981 before releasing any proper recordings, which has left them somewhat disconnected from the commonly circulated histories that tend to center No Wave around the bands who were documented on the No New York compilation LP (TEENAGE JESUS and the JERKS, MARS, JAMES CHANCE and the CONTORTIONS, and DNA). One of the instigating factors for the group’s relocation was actually an UT cassette that fell into the hands of Mark E. Smith, who offered them slots supporting the FALL on their next UK tour, and it’s a historical footnote that I think provides some spot-on context for UT’s very FALL-aligned approach to dissonance and deconstruction through repetition. Sally Young, Nina Canal, and Jacqui Ham took turns rotating instruments and vocal duties on all of the band’s songs, with the various configurations of those roles (generally drums and dual guitars, but not always) and each member’s distinct performative approaches serving to refract the resulting sound from one track to the next in subtle but ever-shifting ways. On the self-titled EP, “Sham Shack” writhes at a slow but steady mutant disco pulse, dispensing with guitars altogether in favor of ominous organ, hypnotic tom-heavy drumming, and a loping, insistent bassline like BUSH TETRAS reinterpreting the more sprawling moments on Hex Enduction Hour, while the DNA-ish scratchy six-string strangulation and stammering vocals on “This Bliss” demonstrate UT at their most classically “No Wave.” By the time they had recorded the Confidential EP, UT were charting a very similar course as their former New York peers in SONIC YOUTH and transforming their tangled squall and razor-edged scrape with an almost conventional pop-leaning bent (just check that acoustic guitar break in the otherwise martial drone of “Bedouin”), but without completely smoothing out the sharp angles that made their raw post-punk clamor so electrifying. A very necessary reissue. (Out Records, utmusic.bandcamp.com)
Yet another entry in the “unjustly neglected ‘80s femme-punk outfits” archive: HELTER SKELTER, a Sydney, Australia quintet whose recorded output is limited to a two-song 7” from 1984 on Hot Records that expertly twists together gauzy coldwave and jaggedly rhythmic post-punk. There seems to be little to no trace of the band’s existence to be found in the deep abyss of the internet, but I’m guessing that they spun out of the same art-damaged Sydney post-punk underground responsible for similarly-minded (but far less enigmatic) groups like PEL MEL and SARDINE. “Make Believe,” the A-side of that lone HELTER SKELTER single, sounds like some parallel universe SIOUXSIE SIOUX fronting an early ‘80s Factory Records band, with guitarist Diannah Levy’s dramatically icy vocals cutting through the clatter of electronically-treated drums and trumpet. On the B-side, “The Party” is essentially everything that made me so enamored with PYLON—cavernous, repetitive bassline pushed to the forefront, sparse and trebly single-note guitar stabs, Levy’s fiercely detached delivery of her oblique lyrics, total anxious dancefloor energy for the freaks and weirdos. If you’re only going to put out one record, it should be as good as this one.

Opinion: Biden's decision to cancel Keystone is one the US will eventually regret First, Biden’s reversal of the cross-border permits for the pipeline kicks off a regulatory onslaught on the petroleum industry’s value chain, with unprecedented breadth, assertiveness and tangible investment impacts. Though this reversal won’t damage the oil industry much, and it isn’t absolutely essential to American oil right now, there are long-term consequences to this decision. When oil prices next boom (and trust me, they will), investors will resume interest in pipeline projects and whoever is in the White House may regret Keystone XL’s cancellation because the United States will have to rely more on less stable trading partners for oil. The aggressive and broad regulatory onslaught kicked off by Biden’s Keystone XL cancellation will prove that he is not kidding around when it comes to climate policy. The President is recruiting an extensive, experienced and motivated team of environmental policy officials adept at wielding the executive branch’s regulatory power. The well-planned campaign will feature conventional steps like federal leasing and permitting bans, including the temporary moratorium placed on oil and gas leasing in the Arctic, more stringent methane regulations and more expensive and time-consuming environmental reviews. Since nearly all require federal permits, pipelines especially are in the crosshairs, with the Dakota Access Pipeline being the next potential target if the courts don’t shut it down first. The Biden administration will also open other new fronts against the petroleum sector. It will deploy environmental justice policies to give disadvantaged communities or indigenous groups located near energy projects a virtual veto power over projects near their lands, such as the Standing Rock Sioux’s opposition to the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline. It will mobilize sweeping financial regulatory authorities to raise the petroleum industry’s capital costs and enlist trade negotiations with the climate fight. In short, Keystone XL is the start of something big. Research by my firm Rapidan Energy Group found forthcoming Biden administration regulations will lower US oil production by 1 million barrels per day by 2023 relative to a second Trump term trajectory. Keystone XL is widely viewed as uneconomic because Canada currently enjoys more pipeline capacity than it needs, and with oil demand on track to peak soon, expensive resources from places like Canada will not be needed. But complacency will last only until the next inevitable boom cycle in oil prices. Contrary to popular belief, diminishing demand for oil won’t keep oil prices low forever. And even if demand starts peaking soon, supply outside the Middle East will likely fall faster than demand slows. This will likely cause the United States to become more dependent on lower-cost Middle East producers. As oil production in the Middle East rises, the buffer those producers keep — called spare capacity — will go down. The lower their spare capacity, the higher oil prices spike when geopolitical disruptions occur. Oil’s next price boom will scramble industry and political priorities. The price and supply security of oil will go right to the top. Oil is, after all, the lifeblood of modern civilization. As President Jimmy Carter and President George H. W. Bush learned the hard way, spiking oil prices contribute to recessions and lost elections. Around the world, sharply rising oil prices have contributed to massive social unrest, as happened in the UK in 2012. And our dependence on oil is going nowhere fast, no matter how fast electric vehicles arrive. The International Energy Agency‘s sustainable development scenario assumes very aggressive climate policies. Still, it projects oil’s share of total energy production falling only eight percentage points over the next 20 years, from 31% to 23% by 2040. Therefore, future price booms, like past ones, will frustrate consumers, terrify elected officials and shift economic growth and import dependence to the top of the priority list. As oil prices boom, so will interest in Canada’s oil resources, the third-largest in the world. But they are landlocked, far from refining centers and costly to transport. Pipelines are cheaper and safer than rail, so projects like Keystone XL are essential. Alberta’s heavy and sulfurous grade of crude oil is prized by complex refiners in the US Gulf Coast and the Indo-Pacific. After Keystone XL’s cancellation, Canada will ship more heavy crude to Asia, where it gets a higher price, as a result of being far away from heavy crude suppliers, and less to US refiners, who will buy more from Mexico, Venezuela and the Middle East. This doesn’t matter much economically, but it is a major national security concern as Canada is a much more stable and friendly partner than others. Of course, energy wonks know oil is widely traded and globally priced, so no country is protected from price volatility. But history repeatedly shows that Washington goes into crisis mode and wonkery goes out the window fast when pump prices rise. So when the cost of oil heads back to $100 amid rising dependence on the Arabian Gulf, Biden’s day one cancellation of a significant pipeline from our largest source of energy imports will be viewed as a much more controversial step than it is today. I’m excited to announce that I’ll be a guest at SiouxperCon: Retromania this year! It’s at the Sioux Falls Convention Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, from September 30th to October 2nd! This is my first out-of-state event since 2018, and I’m super excited to meet new people!
I also want to say that I’ll be donating 10% of my earnings at SiouxperCon to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance in honor of Billy Kametz, who was scheduled to be a guest at the convention before his diagnosis and passing. As someone who has family struggling with colon cancer, it broke my heart to hear the news, and I wanted to help however I could. The Colorectal Cancer Alliance is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and is the largest and oldest colorectal cancer charity in the US. I hope that Billy’s memory lives on and that one day, colorectal cancer will be no more.

Opinion: Biden's decision to cancel Keystone is one the US will eventually regret
First, Biden’s reversal of the cross-border permits for the pipeline kicks off a regulatory onslaught on the petroleum industry’s value chain, with unprecedented breadth, assertiveness and tangible investment impacts.
State shuts down loans at Cash N Go in Sioux Falls, fast City

Genocide In Connection With Missing Murdered and Indigenous Women (#MMIW)
by Hannah and Natania
Image titled “Who’s next?”: A girl in regalia with a question mark on her face. Drawn by Danielle Evans, Member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe in New Mexico, Chemawa Indian School Class of 2019.
Women all across Native communities from Canada to the United States have gone missing or murdered. Native women are ten times more likely to be murdered or missing than any other group.
Native genocide began when colonizers took native land, killed them off, and forced religion on them. Genocide towards Natives has yet to end. Women have been going missing since the early 1980’s in Canada. Governments know about it but they fail to address the issue.
According to the UN Declaration, people have the right to the truth meaning they have the right to know what is happening to their relatives and how it is being addressed. In Native community women are the center, they are the givers of life and everything is from them. Women are very sacred in Native community, without them we are nothing.
Canada has a “Truth and Reconciliation” process to “help” with the atrocities against Natives. However, they have yet to reconcile what is happening. It is just a temporary bandage to keep Natives quiet, but soon it will began to bleed.
Genocide
Sociologist Bradley Campbell (2009) defines genocide as “organized and unilateral mass killing on the basis of ethnicity. While some have focused on genocide as a type of deviance, most genocide is also social control a response to behavior itself defined as deviant” (150).
What the United States government did to Native Americans constitutes as genocide. Between the nineteenth and twentieth-century the United States government to deliberate efforts against these people by forcibly assimilating them into “American” society. Some of those efforts include mass killing and forcibly removing children from their homes to be placed with “American” families or to go to boarding school. This tactic was done in order to force assimilation upon these people. The government did this in an effort to have social control over these people because they wanted to have power over them.
Sexual violence is a form genocide. It is evident that what has occurred to these people is genocide because it fits the criteria within the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Such as killing members of the group and forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. All of the points under international law can be applied to Native Americans. The United States government has still failed to recognize what they did.
There are lots of debates on what falls under the term genocide. Some find the UN Convention on Genocide definition to be narrow. Gallaher (2013) states how “regarding group identity, since the legal definition only identifies national, ethnic, racial, and religious groups, this means that if a political, economic, or gendered group is destroyed in its entirety then this cannot legally be defined as genocide”(13). In the case of indigenous women specifically some may not constitute as what has and is occurring as genocide.
When it comes to Canada the Supplementary Report of The National Inquiry Into Missing And Murdered Indigenous Women And Girls uses the term genocide to describe what Canada did to these people. The report states, “yet, in light of the National Inquiry’s work and of the truths it heard from family members, survivors, Expert Witnesses and Knowledge Keepers, the most appropriate term is “genocide” (149).
The report also cites other examples of genocide towards groups such as the genocide that occurred in Rwanda. The report also states, “i… these disappearances and these murders are simply the most recent iteration of this genocide” (151). The United States should take action to see that what they have done to these people and to missing and murdered indigenous women and girls as an act of genocide as well.
Our topic connects to human rights and settler colonialism. Within connection to human rights it is apparent our topic is connected to genocide because the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide was the first human rights treaty adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations. Boaventura de Sousa Santos states, “human rights can serve as a progressive politics that illuminates some of the dialectical tensions that lie at the core of Western modernity” (39). Therefore the human rights atrocities that have and still occur against missing and murdered indigenous women and girls is key to the discussion.
Our topic also connects to settler colonialism. Through how indigenous people’s lands were colonized through white people. Through being killed and forcibly removed from lands these people have suffered from historical trauma as a result.
Recent developments
Cases regarding missing and murdered Indigenous women are often not covered in the news/media. Missing and murdered indigenous women get lack of attention. Native American women are ten times more likely to be murdered than the national average according to the US Commission on Civil Rights.
However with two Native American women were elected to Congress in 2018 more effort is put into investigating disappearances and to prevent future devastation. Arizona has the third-highest number of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in the country. In May 2019 the Arizona Senate passed a bill to investigate/study missing and murdered Indigenous women.
Discussion question:
Is this historically deliberate and systematic pattern of violence and abuses against indigenous women considered genocide?
Image description: “The abuse of women is Well known in history, and tells you a lot about what is happening to our earth.” - LaDonna Brave Bull Allard (Standing Rock Sioux)
Image description: woman with a red hand print painted on her face.
Image description: Woman in a ribbon skirt with Urban Indian Health Institute statistics on MMIWG. 506 - MMWG cases were identified across 71 selected urban cities. 128 were cases of missing Indigenous women. 280 were cases of murdered Indigenous women. 98 were cases with an “unknown status.” The media age of MMIWG is 29 (source: Urban Indian Health Institute).

WATCH: Lana Del Rey Stopping Mid-Concert To Look For Her E-Cig Is So Relatable
Lana Del Rey is just like the rest of us. When her vape pen is gone, the entire world must stop until it’s found — even if that means putting a hold on the show.
That’s exactly what happened to the “Summertime Sadness” singer when she dropped her e-cigarette during a gig in Portland. Lana took to the mic for a quick pause as she, her band, and other crew members went on the hunt for her missing e-cig to no avail.
Ultimately she gave up — “Oh, f**k it,” she said.
Then, she carried on, asking the crowd to sing “Video Games” with her.
So damn relatable.
