Siobhan Reviews Movies : Blue Beetle
Tumblr media
I was almost going to bail on going to the movies (alone), but I'm actually really glad I didn't. Because that was a whole lot of fun. After a fair few eh movies, dc has made another decent one. I think it's because it's a small movie. No world ending, no time travel, no extra dimensions, just one guy in one city against one weapons manufacturer. Which worked.

📽️ Jury Duty (1995)
There is only one word to describe this movie: idiotic. I watched this because my sisters and I were on a Pauly Shore kick after watching Son in Law. I have to say this one was disappointing. It’s not nearly as funny or interesting as Son in Law. It was long and boring, actually. (It’s actually not a long movie; it just felt long because it was stupid.) It’s actually unfortunate that I disliked this movie so much because I really enjoy Pauly Shore, although I know that that opinion in itself is not super popular one. Either way, I won’t be watching this movie again and I wouldn’t recommend it unless you want to be bored. To (greatly) paraphrase Billy Madison, I am dumber for having watched it.
Sex/nudity: 3/10 (a few innuendoes and references, some suggestive scenes)
Language: 3/10 (no f words, many instances of God’s name, many juvenile words, some other cursing)
Violence: 1/10 (I honestly don’t remember but IMDb says mild)
Overall rating: 2/10

Eileen ('15'): Two Parts Thomasin Perfection to One Part Bat-shit Crazy.
#onemannsmovies #filmreview of “Eileen” (2023). #LFF. Almost the glory of a "Carol 2" until derailed by a bizarre 3rd reel plot twist. 3.5/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Eileen” (2023) (from the London Film Festival). Arrghh! You know that on One Mann’s Movies I very very rarely use my 5* rating. For about the first two-thirds of this film, I had the 5-star card out of my pocket and ready to apply. But then, through an utterly crazy plot-twist, the train came off the rails. The 5-star card went back into my pocket again. As such,…

No context or explanation, just tell me your favourite books/movies/TV shows as bullet points.
There's a way to be told I talk too much. Here's some recommendations I can offer of books I enjoyed.
Books
The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton
Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli
Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen
Bog Child by Siobhan Dowd
Rules of Prey & Eyes of Prey by John Sanford
The Plague by Albert Camus
My Friend Flicka by Mary O'Hara
Capt. Hook by J. V. Hart
Wither by Lauren De Stefano (This is a series but I only recommend Wither as the story rapidly devolves from the second book onward)
Boy Toy by Barry Lyga (TW: this novel is centered around the fallout of CSA of a teenage boy by his middle school teacher and how her abuse and impending release from prison upends his life 2 years later)
Movies
The Devil Wears Parada
Everything, Everywhere, All at Once
Klaus
Elemental
Train to Busan
Flu
The Menu
Soul
Secret Garden (original film)
Instead of TV shows, how about Long-form content creators I enjoy.
Cinema Therapy
MertKayKay
Coffeezilla
Sloan Stowe
Folding Ideas
Caitlin Doughty
Adam Conover
Sarah Z
The Right Opinion
Emily D. Baker
Wisecrack
Overly Sarcastic Productions
Sideways
Steve Reviews
Ethan Becker
Münecat
Super Eyepatch Wolf
Savage Books
Pyrocynical
Broey Deschanel
Skyehoppers
Johnny 2 Cellos
Terror formed
Flawed Peacock
And just saying, I am personally upset that Flawed Peacock made his YouTube channel before me because that sort of word play is my favorite type of dirty humor.

I Am Getting Tired Talking About the Designs
It is the main thing outside of Clois that I see talked about with My Adventures With Superman. I’ve even seen someone call the show’s style so far as ‘hyper realism’ because of how they’re doing the villain designs which... *stares at the person until holes bore into their skull* And here’s the thing: I don’t mind people complaining about the villains technically. The fact that both Livewire and Slade feel kind of samey next to each other doesn’t help the fact that the show is struggling to give its villains time to shine. They risk slipping into a territory where they feel there as a part of the mandate of this being a superhero show rather than interesting entities unto themselves and I’d be okay with people talking about that.
Or how about the fact that so far none have had a REALLY good or interesting fight with Superman so far? Ivo is the best on both fronts so far but otherwise we’ve see Clark grab someone’s fist before responding with an attack three times now and one of those was against a robot. The only one he hasn’t done it to is Livewire and she doesn’t exactly punch, does she?
I had my brother bitch at me yesterday, if you don’t want to talk about the villains, about Jimmy’s stuff needing a little more fleshing out if he’s suddenly going to be mopey about the two getting together, especially after pushing Clark and Lois towards each other at first. That isn’t an unfair complaint and even in my last review, for as much as I liked the episode, I still admitted there were issues and lacking payoffs, especially with Jimmy. There are issues. This isn’t a perfect show, though nothing should be perfect because perfect is boring. It probably does need to take a breath though because while it is shockingly well paced, it is juggling a lot at once and it is concerning for when one of the balls may drop.
But like... Unless they’re just fundamentally getting the character wrong with no chance for growing into their design, can we just stop bitching about them? Parasite from my knowledge was originally a dude who was fucked up by an experiment and went “Well, they can’t cure me so I guess I’m evil” which is way less interesting than actually having his personality and his personal goals be parasitic to some extent so that they match his powers thematically. I’ve heard Livewire is a cocky, annoying bitch. We all remember the “Smartest person here” banter, right? That bitch with real powers, and irreversible powers as was foreshadowed by her veins, is going to be INSUFFERABLE. And Slade? The fucker is twenty years younger, minimum, than his comic counterpart and has both eyes and his battle suit in the title sequence fits his aesthetics so maybe cut him some slack because his cocky attitude now is clearly setting up for a GLORIOUS fall.
Of course, this is all assuming the show does well by these characters but at least right now they definitely have potential to become like their comic counterparts, especially with the question of how Silver Banshee is getting her screams back after Clark broke her mask.
So unless you complaint is more than “I want them to look exactly like my comic books!” maybe let an adaptation be, you know, an adaptation. I mean, so far the show fits exactly how DC has marketed itself since... I dunno, from what I hear the New 52? Especially in television because *gestures at all the DC movies* so I might not be a comics guy but I absolutely see why DC was okay with this as the rights holder because this is EASILY the most interested I’ve been in literally ANY of Superman’s rogue’s gallery. And no, I’m not a comic book guy but I see people comparing the two and you know my response when people bring up the differences in design? Most of the time I’m curious. Like what is Siobhan like when she looks like some genetically altered mutant or just a straight up alien of some sort? What’s the backstory there? But I also enjoy the cocky, wanna be supervillain of Siobhan in the show with her glam rock hair and raspy voice.
But I will admit that I don’t know the pain of adaptation too well. The closest I’ve come is stuff like Guardians of Ga’Hoole (which frankly is a shockingly good movie for how much of a mess adapting that series to anything would be) and Percy Jackson, where I only bitched about Clarisse because making Annabethe Clarisse was both more boring and narratively pointless because Clarisse is KIND OF IMPORTANT to the second book of that series, bare minimum.
Nothing here strikes me like that and if you disagree... Let me know. I see adaptations like this as a chance to both enjoy something and learn but frankly, EVERYONE bitching about the designs and nothing else is just making me tired and that’s making me not want to learn which means afterwards, I won’t dig deeper which isn’t that what you want as a fellow fan of the character?

Song of the day: “Season of the Witch” by Donovan. Dark Winds used it. :D
I’m going to try to post personal updates more on Sundays lol. On Hailey Fe now. I miss Junel Fe, except Hailey comes with iron instead of sugar pills. Hailey is keeping my skin clearer than Lo Loestrin Fe did.
Speaking of PCOS, Delicate Condition is the first book I’ve read where a character has that. :D She doesn’t show up until the ending, though. There are some characters I headcanon as having polycystic ovaries. They’re just that: headcanons.
After hearing how Angelica Ross was treated on-set, I’m even more pissed by American Horror Story: Delicate’s casting. Despite the novel’s anti-misogyny, -racism, and -ageism messages… Well, those first two could have used some more work. Editing wasn’t great. Anna came off as an out of touch rich woman more than once. (Like this season’s cast.)
I felt horrible for her publicist, who was fired due to misunderstandings. It’s understandable why Anna thought she was being stalked. It’s the whole point of the book. But poor Emily never gets an explanation, much less an apology. Siobhan also claims resurrecting the dead is unnatural. Being part of an immortal coven capable of body hopping/genetic memory à la Dune isn’t??
Long story short, there are already reviews that remind me of The VVitch. Protagonist joins a coven that hurt her. Some fans claim female empowerment. Siobhan’s coven isn’t malevolent. But Anna was left ignorant that magic was being performed on her, which was the cause of her pain and hallucinations.
Danielle Vega did a great job at exploring ageism with number1crush’s attitude toward Anna. That has to be said. Fan (or anti-fan) entitlement is a pet peeve.
I haven’t read Rosemary’s Baby in a while and haven’t seen the movie, but the doctor’s name was also Hill. Dr. Carla Hill makes me think of Carl Hill from Re-Animator.
Right now I’m reading the Joe Leaphorn series after watching Dark Winds. Also, the Rev. Clare Fergusson Mysteries and almost done with Dr. Ruth Galloway. Mysteries are more my cup of tea book-wise.

walk-in review; An Cailn Ciúin | part one
DISCLAMER: i work in a large retail cinema here in ireland. part of my work is doing temperature checks inside of the screens, and whenever im assigned to that duty on my shift, i do just that every half hour (while sneaking in a minute or two of watching the movie). the first part of these reviews comes from whatever i happen to see when i walk into the screen every half hour.
i dont get to see a whole lot, thus this first review comes purely from ~5 minutes of watchtime in random intervals of the movie, and talking to people before and especially after the movie. as you can imagine, it isn't really comprehensive
however i dont watch trailers for movies, even ones that i already want to see, mostly because all of them edit together the best bits of the movie, leaving me disappointed at the shortcomings that they hid behind the big moments. so i count this first review as a sort of "trial-by-fire trailer" for said movie. essentially; "can a couple minutes of watchtime and word-of-mouth alone convince me to watch a movie?"
first i want to preface this with the best thing to come from this movie; the people who come to see it. to put it simply, most of them are quite old, and they are so adorably sweet it makes me so happy ! they always have something nice to say, they never spend too much, and theyre so chatty and lovely and i love old people and WILL DIE FOR THEM.
anyways, the actual movie.
An Cailín Ciúin, from what i can tell, is a movie about all the joys of growing up in rural ireland in ~early 1960s. including, but most certainly not limited to;
abusive and compliant parents
abhorrently obvious middle child syndrome
extensive breaks to your grandparents
cars driving on what can barely be considered as roads
in all seriousness though, this movie has everything to do with observation. (An Cailín Ciúin is irish gaelic for "the quiet girl" and oh boy is our main girl siobhan quiet ! ) our story follows siobhan, a young girl growing up in ireland. if im getting this right, then her parents had a child, needed a break away from minding all the kids at home so they could focus on just one, and in a standard Irish parenting move, sent one away to live with relatives for a while. siobhan is initially scared by the prospect, considering how shy she is, and how scared she is being in a completely new place (autistic coded characters??? in MY irish indie film?????), but she does agree to go, i believe in large part to her abusive father. really standard bad dad. y'know the type. "arent i allowed to have a drink after a long days work?" type beat. it helps the negative connotations that he's the only one who cant speak irish out of everyone in the house.
as an aside; i do believe the father is an allegory for ireland and the irish still feeling the effects of british rule, a time of history that has irreversibly destroyed our culture; a culture that this movie attempts to keep alive, and which it does beautifully. talking to the people who've seen it right after, they said how they felt taken back to a time that was much simpler, a time that was in many ways much better than present time. it's such a shame this movie is being written off by the larger public as "old people movie for old people only no younguns allowed", when in reality this film is trying to show everything that we as the Irish are best at, and where we as a culture shine, and how that's very very quickly being completely eroded to make way for the English way of life. if anything, this movie needs to be shown to the younger generations. it needs to be shown to people that have never experienced the feelings of community that came with being irish, and the incredibly beautiful language that gaeilge is. this movie is the perfect time capsule of Irish culture.
i frankly never got to see a lot of the middle of the movie, there was a plot of siobhan going to a funeral for the first time, and her struggling at school? but the middle of the movie is something i unfortunately have not caught a lot of, and understood less of.
the end of the movie is absolutely heart wrenching, even to me as someone who hasn't watched the entire thing start to finish. essentially, siobhan goes home, her trip is over. her, her siblings, her mother, and her grandparents are all in her house, talking and waiting for her father to get home. when they hear his car pull up, siobhan's mother gets very spooked, with a very worried look on her face. (look if it wasnt obvious at the start that the dad is abusive it really should be now). her grandad tries to reason with her mother, asking her to seek help, which of course the mother refuses. after all, it could take away her children, it could make him angry, it could do all host of things she doesn't want. its easier to just be complacent and suffer. one thing leads to another, and siobhan's grandparents leave. she, along with her mother and father, watch them leave. as soon as father is satisfied, he just heads back in, but mother talks to siobhan, asking her what happened while she was away. they share a stare with each other. mother's filled with dread and despair, and siobhan's with desire. then, siobhan runs down the road, attempting to catch up to her grandparents.
this... hurt to watch. how much she clearly loved and enjoyed life with her grandparents, and how much she hates life at her house, how she just wishes she could stay with them forever. however, as she embraces her grandfather, she sees him. father. she just repeats that, over and over. father. father. father. father. and then the movie ends. the pain in my heart from watching that ending was... unparalleled. it knew exactly how to tug at my heartstrings and did it so well and i hate it for that !!!! (i love it for that)
now that the stuff about the story is over, i wanna talk about close second for the best part of the movie; cinematography!!! and oh my GOD THE CINEMATOGRAPHY
first, most of the movie is shot lower than typical, which is done for two main reasons; to reflect both siobhan's physical and emotional height. obviously because she's a child, she sees the world shorter than most of us, but she's also really, really timid, and shooting low shots further strengthens that feeling of anxiousness that comes from a child, especially a child as quiet as siobhan.
second, the film is in 4:3, which i think is used as a passive reminder to the audience that the film is set in an earlier time frame, since most CRT televisions of the time period were in 4:3.
third, film grain. it isn't present in every shot, but the shots it is present in provide this super lovely and cutesy vintage feel to the movie, which just adds to how much i love the art direction of this film
fourth, focus. focus is barely used in this film, and when it is, it's usually in a shot that siobhan isn't the focus of, which i believe is used to remind us that siobhan is just a child, and children take in a lot more information than us. plus, it adds to one of this movie's greatest strengths; discover, don't show.
...and to be honest, thats all i have about the movie. essentially a girl just wanting to get away, but being scared to. i really like this movie, how it looks and how it sounds and how it feels. it makes me proud of being irish, it makes me want to preserve Irish culture. i love it and i will go and see it. i will either update this post or make a new post when i go to see it, to see if anything about my review changes, what i got right and wrong, and any more tidbits i have to add
(ignore the poll i can't get rid of it im sorry)

Siobhan Reviews Movies : Fall Guy
So I think someone decided that stunt actors weren't getting enough work at the moment, and decided to make a movie to give seemingly every stunt actor in australia a job. And also to smash up sydney. Because that was wild.
As I'm writing this, I'm getting distracted by the fact that they've put behind the scenes footage in the credits, and it's beautiful. It's pushed a 7/10 up to 9/10

intro
Fear inducing stories have been told since the beginning of time and thus it is unsurprising that when we began to make movies, we turned our written horror stories into horror films. Horror films were made originally mostly about Dracula, Frankenstein, as well as Doctors Jekyll and Hyde. In the 70’s and 80’s there came a new insurgence of horror films that were mostly what would be considered “slashers”, which are just movies where the antagonist murders multiple people throughout the film.
Tumblr media
youtube
There are many sub-genres of horror films and certain people may label them in different ways but there are paranormal and supernatural, slashers, folk horrors, psychological horrors, found footage, comedic, cosmic horrors, and many more. Each sub-genre has similar but different characteristics within them such as jump scares or isolation of the protagonists.
youtube
My focus is specifically on supernatural and paranormal horror films. When something is supernatural it cannot be explained . by science and defies the laws of nature. Similarly, the paranormal cannot, at this time, be explained by science and is not natural to this world. The slight difference here is just that some paranormal things could possibly one day be explained by science and supernatural most likely never will be. In films and literature, the supernatural and paranormal are sub-genres of horror in which many of the most popular movies of the past two decades have resided. These stories usually include things such as demons, ghosts, vampires, werewolves, witches, monsters, and pretty much any creature or presence that is not of scientific origin. There are also common themes used within these films such as religion, ancient burial grounds, possession, seances, and of course death.
Tumblr media
There are many famous writers, directors, and filmmakers involved in the supernatural and paranormal films that we talk about as well as continue to view, today. Important to mention, I feel, is world renowned author Stephen King who wrote the stories that were utilized for the infamous films It, The Shining, and Carrie.
Tumblr media
Jason Blum, being the creator of Blumhouse, also produced some of the important films of this time such as Paranormal Acitvity, Sinister, US, The Invisible Man, and Ouija. Who I think is most influential however is the genius, James Wan. James Wan’s films are the most of our time, including his combined work on Insidious and more personal work such as The Nun, Lights out. However, he also created two of the most truly world turning movies that paranormal film lovers have seen; Annabelle, and the most famous of all, The Conjuring.
Tumblr media
Even in these wildly influential films, there are still tropes that can be found within such as skeptical fathers, possessed children (or children who speak to see the spirit), families moving into old haunted homes, objects shifting and falling, haunted dolls, and such. Yet, we do not tired of horror films regardless of the tropes because our fear that generates from the films comes from the addition of the sounds and effects that creates what we really fear the unknown, unseen, and incomprehensible.

📽️ New in Town (2009)
This movie was boring. I am not a huge fan of Harry Connick, Jr., except in P. S. I Love You. Not that he was the one to make or break the movie. It was just very predictable, and that made it not very entertaining. The dialogue was also somewhat strange sometimes, and not in the places that it was supposed to be. I would not watch this one again, but it also wasn’t the worst movie I’ve seen.
Sex/nudity: 3/10 (some making out, a few innuendoes/remarks)
Language: 3/10 (a cut-off mf, some other milder cursing)
Violence: 1/10 (one accidental shooting played for comedy, no death)
Overall rating: 4/10
