THE DAMNED - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Vertical Entertainment
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: Rooted in the depths of Norse Mythology, THE DAMNED follows Eve and her crew as they come across a shipwreck and are faced with the moral dilemma to either help, or prioritise their own survival, and they begin to believe they are all being punished for their choices. Based on Norse mythology, THE DAMNED tells the story of Eve and her crew. After finding a shipwreck, they must decide whether to help the survivors or focus on their own safety. They soon begin to think their choices are bringing about punishment for them all.
REVIEW: Icelandic filmmaker Thordur Palsson received critical acclaim for the Netflix series “The Valhalla Murders” that premiered in 2019. THE DAMNED, which premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival, is debut feature film, and is shot against the beautiful and harsh Icelandic winter landscape.
Thordur Palsson and Jamie Hannigan’s “The Damned” blends supernatural folklore and psychological horror, creating a compelling and complex narrative reminiscent of Agatha Christie with elements of classical British ghost stories. Primarily told from Eve's perspective, the story depicts her and her community’s struggle to survive a harsh winter, compounded by a subsequent shipwreck. The narrative escalates the tension as their situation worsens, weaving 1800s beliefs and mindsets into a Grimm-like nightmare that blurs the lines of reality. Structurally, the story echoes “Aliens, with Eve’s journey paralleling Ripley's, evolving from being protected by soldiers, the fishermen, to becoming the heroine. While Eve rises to the challenge, the final plot twist offers no resolution for her or the viewer, leaving a haunting, classic tale that lingers like a chill to the bone.
Palsson and cinematographer Eli Arenson beautifully capture the Westfjords of Iceland, showcasing its beauty, desolation, and brutality. The deep shadows of nights of the fjords and the intense cold becomes a character, from which the creature, the Draugur, emerges. The film effectively uses both expansive landscape shots and then close-ups, creating a feeling of both vastness and claustrophobia tinged with paranoia, with a Hitchcock-esque style of editing. Period-accurate costumes, organic-feeling special effects for the creature, and Stephen Mckeon's score further enhance the suspense and terror of the experience.
THE DAMNED boasts a powerful ensemble cast, enhanced by on-location filming, especially the harsh conditions of the frigid nights. The actors present diverse beliefs, hierarchies, and responsibilities within the community. The boat scenes aren't just physically demanding; the actors must have been genuinely chilled by the frigid ocean, adding to their captivating performances under environmental stress. Odessa Young as Eve is a standout. She conveys a character navigating unforeseen, extraordinary circumstances, finding resilience while also expressing vulnerability and dread over the consequences of her actions.
Thordur Palsson’s feature film debut, THE DAMNED, is a haunting psychological horror film set against a beautiful yet deadly landscape. The film effectively captures dread, using the folklore of the Draugur in a refreshing and engaging way, enhanced by its nightmarish setting. Palsson creates a thrilling atmosphere and a solid period piece that instills fear of sounds on a cold winter night. This impressive debut leaves me excited to see what Palsson does next.

The series centers on Cora, played by Euphoria and Cuckoo star Hunter Schafer, a woman who has spent her life switching identities to survive. But when her brother’s future is on the line, she adopts one final persona and teams up with Olwen, a replicant grappling with her own mortality, portrayed by the Oscar-winning Michelle Yeoh. Alongside Schafer and Yeoh, the show features Tom Burke, Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Katelyn Rose Downey, Maurizio Lombardi, and Daniel Rigby.
