fish market
(Little bit of original writing)
We are walking down a hill. You and I.
The hill is steep. I have to overcorrect with each step. There is a pull in my stomach like a fish hook, dragging me down - so I grab onto your hand.
You, a counter-weight, a word I learned when building shelves.
At the bottom of the hill is the ocean (the Channel). It sprawls from us to France. I know there are fish in it because I’ve seen them while swimming and I know there are crabs because they sell them, de-shelled and made into paste, on the harbour.
When we get to the beach, we sit under the Arches.
(The Arches are hollows in the above walkway, backed up into the cliffside. People have sex there and do drugs there and families hide their children there, during hot summer days, so they don’t get heatstroke.)
You are carrying the bag and you open it. Inside there is wine (red), bread (French), and something that I can drink. I’m growing a thing inside me that means I can’t drink the wine.
It, a zygote, a word I learned in a beige-walled office at the hospital.
Growing it feels like learning words.
I’m drinking the coke feeling half guilty and half elated. It’s sugar caffeine something no one knows. Everybody knows what it does to mentos, to old coins, to jewellery, to dirty toilets. I drink it because it tastes too good not to, and the zygote makes me want it more than anything. It tastes like crisp air, fresh and cool, like the bubbles in my veins when you say you love me (I love you, I love you).
The wind comes from the sea. You, a steady presence, as you tear off a piece of bread and feed it to me with your fingers. Sturdy things that built shelves to hold my books.
We were here last year and watched a boat sink. You called the coastguard. We were here the year before and watched the harbour built. The year before, we watched the moon rise red. And before. And before.
This year we’re watching the beginning. Everything comes in cycles.
The fish come - their legs spindly and not legs.
The one at the front wears seaweed like we would wear a crown. Around what isn’t shoulders, a string of pebbles.
The ones in the middle carry driftwood and bales of plastic to build the market stall.
The ones in the back carry nothing, wear nothing, look a bit lame and like they’re still in the ocean.
The fish set up closest to the Arches. It’s a good spot because people like to sit under the Arches (and have sex take drugs hide their children). They build their stand and fill it with pebbles, seaweed; it smells like brine. (Open a pickle jar, take a swallow.)
You, an empath - a word I learned at university - ask if they need help. You’re taller than the fish, even the yellowfin tuna spreading the seaweed to look more appealing. They ask you to do the marquee. It’s an old thing of torn plastic, painted white with chalk from the cliffs. You help, secure it to the driftwood with old rusty nails one of the fish hands you.
While the fish set up, the crabs come out, sideways, rushing across the sand. They are all brown in colour, like mud, except for one which is a bit more brick-red. That one goes off by itself a bit, looks at the fish. Cocks its head in a way its exoskeleton (a word I learned from horror movies) shouldn’t allow it to. Then skitters - one pincer after another in a blur of movement - back to the group.
The crabs set up like a military. Efficient. They’ve been placed by the ramp entrance to the beach, which is a spot almost as good as by the Arches. People will pass them first thing in, while they’re still excited, and last thing out, when they want to hold on to the experience.
The crabs are displaying bottle caps. They are separating them into groups, but they can’t read nor see colour. The logic of it escapes me. Some of the bottle caps are metal, old and rusted, some plastic and brand new, white logos on reds and blues easy to identify.
You’re done helping the fish. I’m done watching the crabs. More stalls go up on the beach, manned by sea creatures I don’t know the names of. (Taxonomy, a word I learned from a joke on social media.) There are more fish groups, separate from the first one. Some are preparing to sell food. I expect it’s vegetarian.
More people are coming to the beach now. You know some of them from the bar, I know some from the library. The ones we know ask about the zygote. We make the same joke every time (“getting enough sleep now in preparation!”) and they all respond in kind (“when we had ours, etc etc”). The repetition is both grating and soothing. I get to rehearse before each conversation.
Misanthropy, a word I learned in a different hospital, at a different time.
You come back and drink the wine. I drink the coke. We both eat the bread and watch as a group of monkfish and a group of something that looks like plankton argue about a space they are setting their market up on. Someone got a booking wrong, evidently, because they’ve both been placed at a spot closest to the sealine.
A thing of salt and waves comes to check on them and stop the commotion. Diffuse the situation before it escalates. It is good at de-escalation, this thing. Calm sounds, although not a voice. I don’t know what this thing is, have no word for it. It hurts to look at it directly, but not the way it hurts to look at the sun.
It’s like a depth, underwater, like opening eyes in the Ocean and the sting of salt that greets them.
Are you ready? you ask and reach out your hand to help me up from the sand. You’ve packed our bottles and the empty paper-plastic bag the bread came in.
We weave through the stalls, you half a step in front of me. We’re not used to the change in my gait yet. I always lag just one breath behind now; before we used to walk step in step and hand in hand.
There is a stand with sole selling rainbow fish scales strung up onto wires to wear as necklaces. Next, mackerel with interesting pieces of driftwood, like grabbing finger bones, smoothed through an age spent in the water. You want to buy a couple of those. Will look good in a vase with some flowers you say, and I’m inclined to agree (because I always agree when you speak of the House - compromise or cooperation, both words I learned through trial and error).
The mackerel manning the stand looks old somehow. There is a suggestion of wrinkles around its beady, yellow-rimmed eyes and flat-split mouth. It doesn’t blink. It stares somewhere to the right of you, or maybe to the left, it’s hard to say with how the eyes are situated (one on each side of its head, monocular vision, prey vision). It’s probably handy for spotting thieves.
The mackerel want a lock of hair in exchange. It doesn’t say so, but we both understand anyway. They use it to make their nests softer, for the eggs to adhere to it instead of rock crevices. Makes it easier to protect the eggs from prediction, from cannibalism, accidents, even while they’re being guarded. Your hair is too short so I offer mine and the old mackerel snips a chunk of it off with rusted scissors. It’s a choppy cut. Not much, probably not enough to be noticed, but I leave a part of me with the fish, and we move on.
The thing of salt comes at us sideways, like it’s not coming at all. It looks to you, then to me, then to the zygote. Reaches out what isn’t a hand, touches the bottom of my sternum with what isn’t a finger. Says something like everything comes and comes again. I feel a flutter even though it’s too early and the thing says next year you will see.
We gather our purchases. Head back home, across the beach, past the crabs, up the hill.

For the first time in his life, Ed could really and truly relax. Stede made their home feel safe, and Ed enjoyed building it with him. In the past, Ed had never allowed himself to be surrounded by comforts, save for his brief time with Stede on the Revenge before the abandonment and the darkest time in Ed's life. But now their home was filled with nothing but comforts. Plush rugs you could sink your toes into, squishy throw pillows, soft sheets, soft clothing, and silly romance novels Ed enjoyed reading in his free time.
Their home was also filled with food. With the bit of treasure they'd taken from the ship, going to the market to buy food was no big deal. Ed was also improving at fishing, and brought home dinner himself many nights. Stede would go to the bakery almost every day, and return with freshly baked treats for them both. And at night, Ed slept like a baby, under a soft heavy blanket and with Stede spooning him.
There was a change that happened slowly. Slowly enough that Ed didn't notice it until it suddenly hit him all at once. He was getting pudgy. One morning he was getting dressed, and his favorite plum-colored pants bit into his tummy something awful when he got them buttoned up. He went to look at himself in profile in the mirror, and his eyes bulged at the sight. A chubby belly was muffining over the waistband, like dough trying to escape from a too-small bowl.
For the first time in months, Ed panicked.
He knew he was over-reacting, which just made it worse. He crawled into the bed, pulled the blankets up over his head, and got into the fetal position. He didn't undo the pants at all, and felt how mercilessly they pressed into his soft belly, a constant, tight reminder of what he did to himself.
Fat greedy pig. He didn't deserve 3 meals a day. He didn't know why Stede thought he did. 3 meals a day were for rich people, good people, and all the types of people he was not. He should consider himself lucky to get hardtack and dried meat once a day.
He had stopped having nightmares about his time in Hornigold's ship years and years ago. He laughed it off now, those old days back when he and Jack were paying their dues. But maybe his recent purgatorial encounter with him unlocked some old memories. Ben in his head tried to feed him soup. Hornigold from his past screamed at anyone who vocalized hunger pains, and reminded them all that they were unworthy rats who were lucky they didn't get crumbs from the floor. And if he was only verbally abusive that day, that was a good day. Often times he'd get the cat-o-nine tails and make a show. He was completely sadistic. Ed managed to avoid the worst of it. He was still alive, after all. He was already used to being hungry. His father drank away money that should've gone to feeding him. And he was quick and smart and light on his feet. He kept his head down. And he was just an unworthy dog.
An unworthy dog who was now eating like a king, with snacks between meals, multiple pastries a day, and growing fat off it. He suddenly felt nauseous, and curled up around himself tighter.
"Darling?" Stede called, entering their bedroom. "Edward, are you still asleep? There's a chili festival in town today, remember?"
He walked over to the lump on the bed, and noticed it was shivering. He slowly pulled down the blanket and found Ed tear-stained and red in the face.
"Edward!" Stede cried out, horrified. "Are you alright? Did you have a nightmare? What can I do?"
"I'm sorry," Ed sniffled. "I'm fat."
"You're not fat."
"I'm getting fat. I have to stop this, I have to lose it--"
"Why?" Stede asked gently.
Ed opened his mouth, and then closed it again, realizing any words about to come out of his mouth were straight from Hornigold, and he didn't want to repeat the awful things that man said.
"Don't deserve it," he whispered eventually.
"Can I touch you, dear?" Stede asked softly.
Ed nodded, and Stede put his hand on Ed's shoulder and rubbed it gently. "Of course you deserve it, love. You've lead such a tough life. You deserve lots of good food and to put on a bit of happy weight more than me, that's for sure."
Ed's eyes flicked to Stede's belly, which was, in fairness, basically right next to his face. It rested ever so slightly in his lap. Stede was so warm and soft, so him gaining a bit of retirement weight made sense. Stede had been slightly pudgier when they met than he was when they reunited, so it felt right to see him fill out again. He liked it on Stede. But for himself?
"I'm being greedy," Ed said. "And I don't deserve it. I'm just being a fucking pig--"
"Ed, please," Stede pleaded gently. "What brought this all on?"
"You're gonna think I'm stupid... but I just noticed..."
"I don't think you're stupid. I only really noticed it recently too. My pants are starting to fight with me," Stede said, laughing it off. "It happened slowly. We see each other and ourselves every day. It makes sense that we both missed it until it suddenly clicked."
Ed nodded. "And... I was thinking about... Hornigold... the old days. He never fed us enough. Izzy used to scoff at any sort of sweet purchase. He said it was impulsive and wasteful and that money could be better spent on actual food. And he was right--"
"Look, keeping the crew fed with proper food is important, but dessert is important to. It keeps the crew happy. It makes you happy. And you're not the kind of person to spend all your money on cake and leave nothing for meat and bread and such. I'm sure whatever you wanted was more than reasonable, and Izzy was just being... Izzy-like," Stede said.
Ed didn't respond to that. He let out a small sigh as he felt his body come down from its sudden panic.
"Do you think I'm ugly?"
"What? No! I could never think you're ugly, Ed. Do... do you think I'm ugly now that I've... put on a few?" Stede said, his bravado and confidence turning to anxiety and shame shockingly quickly.
"No," Ed replied, reaching out and putting a hand on Stede's thigh. "I like it. You look soft and happy. Like you're s'posed to be. It's nice to cuddle and squish and... I just like it on you."
"Well, I like it on you. You look safe, and happy, and relaxed. I noticed that whenever you eat a pastry, you do this cute little wiggle in your hips, and you look so happy. I like how it's visible proof that you're safe. That you can be soft, and you never have to worry about being hard again. And... it's very pretty, dear. It suits you very well."
Ed sat up and leaned his head on Stede's shoulder.
"Thank you."
"You're precious, and you deserve to eat whatever you want. And I'm your boyfriend who deserves to spoil you rotten. And if you get a little pudgy, that's ok, great even, if it means you're happy."
"Even if... I keep getting chubbier?"
"You can get as chubby as you want, Ed. I will love you just the same."
Ed put his arms around Stede, and Stede hugged him back.
Stede would never lie to him. Ed knew this from experience, and Stede had even said so explicitly multiple times. Which meant it really was alright that he was growing soft, and might keep growing softer, and that he wasn't a greedy pig for eating 3 square meals plus snacks and dessert, and that he wasn't an unworthy rat who deserved to starve.
Stede and Ed had exchanged a lot of stories of their childhoods and youths by this point, a lot of which were usually responded to with: "That's absolutely awful, you didn't deserve any of that." Ed was absolutely sure, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Stede didn't deserve the torture he was put through as a child by the hands of his fellow students. He didn't deserve a cold, unloving father, who called him a soft and weak spoiled brat. He didn't deserve any of that.
So Ed didn't deserve to have a father who drank and screamed and threw things and hit. He didn't deserve to spend years toiling away for Hornigold, with Jack as his only point of comfort. He didn't deserve the way Izzy treated him, as if his interests were stupid and he wasn't tough enough to keep being Blackbeard.
Ed deserves this. Ed deserves happiness.
"Let's get up," Ed said softly. "We need to eat breakfast. And maybe hit the tailor's before going to the chili festival," he said with a chuckle.
Stede chuckled with him. "Sounds like a perfect day."

Fisherman HX
Fisherman HX who finds an injured creature tangled up in an abandoned net. Not only does HX recognize this creature as a merman, but also as the infamous sinker of numerous shady ships.
He decides to help this merman anyway, their wounds look quite severe.
HX: “how bad can he be-?”
HC: [weakly hisses and tries ripping HX’s hands off]
HX: “GAH”
Nevertheless, HC’s wounds are too many and too deep. And he can only defend himself so much while trapped in the net. Eventually, he lets HX pull him up into the boat.
HX can’t believe he’s actually following through with this idiotic plan. He slowly unsheathes his trusty dagger, making sure the merman can see he means no bodily harm, just needs to begin cutting up the net.
This merman can’t seem to understand HX’s words but still gives him the most judgmental looks. Especially when they’re back in HX’s cottage, the human attempting to apply ointment to the bleeding scratches on his back, and some gashes on his tail.
However, the merman’s mobility seems to worsen over the next few hours. HX curses. There must have been poison involved. It would take him a couple days to properly identify it and concoct the appropriate cure. Because of the merman’s mild paralysis, HX literally has to tend to the merman’s whims.
A week goes by. The two have established a somewhat friendly relationship. And as it turns out, HC can understand human tongue
HC: “you fuckin’ loser”
HX, getting whiplash: “exCUSE ME!?”
HX decides to bring HC on his next fishing trip. The merman’s condition has improved enough. Plus, if HC can communicate with him, he should be able to offer advice on how to catch more fish to sell in the next market.
So here HX is, patiently waiting for the telling wiggling of his small nets below. HC is splayed out on the other end of the boat, chilling and ultimately making HX’s life harder.
It doesn’t get more exciting than this-
SPLASH!
A body shoots out of the water and yoinks HX overboard. The creature drags HX beneath the surface, constricting his limbs and going for his neck.
A series of aggressive clicks echoes underwater.
HX: [so this is how i die?]
One second, HX is being drowned by what is clearly another merman, the next moment he’s somehow back above the surface and gasping for air.
HC now insistently clicks at the other merman, who squawks then hisses as he brandishes HX’s limp body like a ragdoll.
HX: “Whasss goin’ on?”
HC: “Shut up, don’t say anything.”
He chirps one last time to the other merman.
***
HC beckons his mate closer, speaking in merman tongue.
“Love, let the human go. He saved me.”
Floating next to the boat, XL bares his teeth, his expression one of disbelief.
“Are you sure? I can still drown him if you want. He’s just a human,” XL says, still half-strangling HX.
Centuries ago, XL’s pod was brutally attacked by pirates. As an adventurous, young merman, XL had swam too close to the surface, consequently leading the pirates to his podmates. A few survived, but XL never forgets.
He will never let his vendetta against humans go.
Funny how things work out.
While XL was born a merman, HC was turned by XL when they mated. This explains why HC knows human tongue and has a better understanding of human behavior. It also helps him sink even the most advanced ships.
XL and HC started off extremely hostile, HC a merchant who sailed the waters XL resided in. HC even has a scar from their first meeting, which he jokes that it’s a love bite or something. HC always wore tough clothing so XL’s jaws couldn’t pierce through.
Feisty XL hadn’t hesitated to chomp HC multiple times.
Alas, the fates had plans for them. Over the course of five years, the merman and human fell deeply in love. HC had then offered his life for XL’s to have, and the decision to mate was made.
The transformation process is a difficult one, and has a very low chance of survival. It involves dark ancient magic; a ritual consisting of feeding from human flesh for one week straight; then drowning until near death before being saved with a kiss from a merman.
When HC’s two legs took the form of a beautiful, massive, crimson and black tail, the pair had lovingly intertwined tails while wrapping their arms around each other.
Many, many eras have come and went. XL taught HC the merman ways from how to swim at incredible speeds to how to avoid humans and the violence they bring.
The mated pair have been together since, swimming beneath the ocean’s surface, inseparable.
Now, XL has successfully stalked the human that took his mate. He doesn’t understand human tongue, and is prepared to slaughter this human and offer the flesh for HC to devour to recover.
Fortunately, HC explains the situation, and HX’s life is spared.
HC: “He’s honestly not that bad.”
XL: “...did you misbehave while you were with him?”
HC: “Not a single eating utensil left, water everywhere on his floors, and I managed to break his… he said teevee?”
XL, purring: “That’s my boy. ”
HX is still held in the feisty merman’s clutches. After a snickering string of clicks from the new merman, HX questions: “What is he saying?”
“Oh, he says thank you for helping me,” HC answers.
What XL actually said: “Why is his haircut so ugly?”
Soon enough, XL hoists himself up into HX’s boat. He deposits HX on the floor, then wiggles over to HC.
“Missed you,” XL says, petting his mate’s hair. HC responds by nuzzling his forehead against XL’s.
HX lays on his back, staring up at the sky. He now has two merman cuddling in his boat, and exactly zero fish have been caught.
“Why am I here?”
A few days later, XL approaches HX’s boat again and actually does offer human flesh for HC. HX gags and looks away as HC happily tears into the gory flesh.

Integrated Agriculture Businesses: A Sustainable Farming Model with Spirulina Farming
Integrated agriculture businesses are revolutionizing the farming landscape by combining multiple agricultural practices into a single, interconnected system. These businesses maximize resource efficiency by integrating crop production, livestock farming, aquaculture, and renewable energy sources like solar power. An emerging component of this model is spirulina farming, which offers a natural way to capture carbon while producing a valuable, nutrient-dense product. Together, these elements form a holistic, sustainable approach that enhances both environmental and economic outcomes.
What Is Integrated Agriculture?
Integrated agriculture refers to a farming system where various agricultural activities are strategically combined to create a mutually beneficial cycle. The outputs of one process become inputs for another, reducing waste and improving resource efficiency. For example, livestock waste can be used as fertilizer for crops, while crop residues can be fed to animals or used for bioenergy production.
The goal of integrated agriculture is to create a closed-loop system that enhances productivity, reduces environmental impact, and promotes sustainability.
Key Components of Integrated Agriculture Businesses
Crop and Livestock Integration: Crop and livestock farming are combined, where livestock waste serves as organic fertilizer for crops, reducing the need for synthetic inputs. In turn, crops provide feed for livestock, ensuring efficient use of resources.
Aquaculture and Agriculture Integration: Integrated aquaculture systems like aquaponics pair fish farming with crop production. Fish waste provides nutrients for plants, while plants help purify the water for the fish, creating a balanced, sustainable system with minimal waste.
Renewable Energy Integration: Solar power, & wind energy derived from agricultural residues are integrated into farm operations, providing a clean, reliable energy source. Solar-powered farms, for instance, use photovoltaic panels to generate electricity for irrigation, heating, and cooling systems, significantly reducing operational costs.
Spirulina Farming: Spirulina, a blue-green algae, is an eco-friendly addition to integrated agriculture. It captures carbon dioxide during photosynthesis, acting as a natural carbon sink. Spirulina can also be grown in solar-powered facilities, using minimal land and water, while producing a high-protein food source for human consumption and livestock feed.
Benefits of Integrated Agriculture Businesses with Spirulina
Maximized Resource Efficiency: Integrated systems recycle nutrients, energy, and water, reducing waste and improving overall resource use. Spirulina farming fits seamlessly into this model, capturing carbon and using minimal inputs to produce a high-value output.
Environmental Sustainability: Integrated farming reduces the reliance on chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and fossil fuels. The addition of spirulina farming enhances this by actively sequestering CO2 and promoting biodiversity.
Economic Diversification: Farmers benefit from multiple income streams—crops, livestock, aquaculture, bioenergy, and spirulina production—making their operations more resilient to market fluctuations and environmental challenges.
Circular Economy: Integrated systems create a circular economy where waste is minimized and outputs from one process are used in another. Spirulina farming contributes to this by utilizing solar energy, water, and CO2, while providing valuable nutrients and biofuels.
Examples of Integrated Agriculture Models
Agro-Solar Farms with Spirulina: Solar panels are installed above crops or spirulina ponds, generating renewable energy while providing partial shade for plants or algae. This dual-use system maximizes land productivity and energy efficiency.
Aquaponics with Spirulina: Combining aquaculture and hydroponics, fish waste is used to nourish plants, while spirulina absorbs excess CO2 and provides a protein-rich food source for both fish and human consumption.
Livestock and Spirulina Integration: Livestock farms can integrate spirulina farming to capture carbon emissions from animals, while spirulina can be used as a high-protein, eco-friendly feed for the livestock, reducing the need for external feed inputs.
Agroforestry and Spirulina: Trees are integrated into farming landscapes, providing shade, windbreaks, and additional products like timber or fruits. Spirulina can be grown in shaded areas, contributing to carbon capture and nutrient cycling in the system.
Challenges of Integrated Agriculture
Despite its many advantages, integrated agriculture faces some challenges:
Initial Investment: Setting up integrated systems requires significant initial investments in infrastructure, technology, and training.
Complexity: Managing multiple farming systems at once can be complex and requires a comprehensive understanding of each component’s role in the overall ecosystem.
Regulatory Barriers: In some regions, regulatory frameworks may not be fully adapted to support integrated systems, making it challenging for farmers to get the necessary permits or incentives.
The Future of Integrated Agriculture with Spirulina
As global demand for sustainable farming practices grows, integrated agriculture will continue to evolve. Governments, NGOs, and private investors are increasingly recognizing the potential of integrated systems, providing subsidies and incentives for farmers to adopt these models. The rise of renewable energy technologies, along with the increasing demand for nutrient-rich, sustainable food sources like spirulina, will fuel the future of integrated agriculture.
Conclusion
Integrated agriculture businesses represent a sustainable future for farming, where crops, livestock, aquaculture, and renewable energy work together in harmony. The inclusion of spirulina farming takes this model one step further by adding a natural carbon capture solution and a high-value product. As farms adopt these integrated systems, they will enhance their environmental stewardship, reduce their carbon footprints, and secure long-term economic resilience, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable agricultural future.

Cobalt river goby
I once bought fish, named emerald river gobies, Stiphodon elegans. The species was presumably misidentified, because those seen (rarely) in the freshwater aquarium trade, are S. semani, misidentified as S. elegans. Their usual trade name, is cobalt river goby, or blue neon goby. Though the genus Stiphodon, is not to be confused, with the marine neon gobies of the genus Elactinus, that are more common in aquaria. Their habitat, captive care, form, and function, are all dissimilar. On the other hand, a trade name might conflate more than one of the species included in Stiphodon.
S. semani is native to clear, coastal, moderately to swift flowing streams, with rocky and boulder strewn bottoms. This environment favors the growth of natural biofilms, which form the diet of these gobies. The reason these gobies live in coastal streams, is because their larvae are dispersed as plankton, by the neighbouring sea. However, the adults of this species, are entirely freshwater denizens. They deposit their eggs in the freshwater streams, for them to hatch, and the larvae to migrate downstream, as freshwater plankton.
No salt should be added to the aquarium water, if the adult S. semani are to be kept. These gobies require a biotope tank, but are not considered difficult to maintain, if their captive needs are respected. These fish are peaceful bottom dwellers, but any tankmates will need to share their specialised demands. Fortunately, they should be maintained in a suitably large social group. Nor does the aquarium need to be large, for these 4.6 centimeter, or 1.8 inch long fish. What they need is rocks, and oxygenated water with a good flow.
The pH that is best for them, is probably slightly acidic to neutral (6.5-7?) though I haven't seen data from collection localities, and I am inferring from other Stiphodon sp. and their habitat preferences. Because S. semani inhabits sunny, lowland areas in the wild, the temperture can be maintained at 24 to 28 degrees. Although the gobies are not violent, the males are competitive, so the decor should be places to break their lines of sight. A further consideration should be, that these gobies are good jumpers, and can also climb the glass, out of the water. Therefore, the lid must be escapeproofed, knowing that Stiphodon is slightly amphibious.
Stiphodon are sometimes described as, algae eating gobies, but that isn't really correct. They are best described as grazing biofilm, communities formed of microscopic organisms, or aufwchs, the small animals and plants that adhere to open surfaces, in aquatic environments. If the substrate is cobbles, S. semani will graze any biofilm that develops there, as well as the infauna associated with algal growth. Though always wild caught, S. semani are easy to feed on a captive diet, that is based on sinking foods, with both animal and plant components. Stiphodon will, for instance, rasp at commercial algae wafers marketed for loricarids, these wafers usually being suitable for omnivores by design.

Hokkaido is different
Hokkaido is different.
It’s still part of Japan, but feels different.
Maybe the things I’d read about the island before I got there that made me feel this way, I’m not sure.
The island north of Honshu was only colonised by Japan in the late 19th century, before that it wasn’t considered part of Japan.
It was home to the Ainu people, whose culture and heritage and language even were descimated by the Japanese.
Then when the country was opened up to international trade in the second half of the 19th century the island was at the forefront of the new buildings and technologies that were introduced to Japan.
The place I took the ferry from Aomori to in Hokkaido is Hakodate,
I buy the cheaper ticket for the ferry so I get a piece of carpeted floor in a common lounge area to rest and put my things.
The ferry is only a little busy, not Summer busy, the restaurant is closed.
I buy some noodles (another Japanese obsession) and a beer. Later I go up on deck, it’s my turn on watch to keep an eye out for Godzilla!
As we come in to Hakodate there are some announcements over the tannoy.
It’s all in Japanese so I’ve no idea what they’re saying, probably the usual ferry stuff, ‘go to your cars now’, or 'don’t go to your cars now’, or whatever.
Hakodate was one of the ports that were enforcedly opened up to international trade after the visit of US Commodore Perry in the mid 19th century.
As a consequence it was one of the first places to feel the impact of the western world in Japan, in the modern age.
Buildings that were built to accommodate the new dispensation still survive and give the city a theme park-feel, albeit a fairly disparate theme park.
They are interesting to see nonetheless, old consulates, public buildings and churches, from a time when Hakodate was centre stage.
The buildings aren’t particularly old but part of thing that makes them interesting is that they survived the war and the Japanese rush into modernity.
The owner of the guesthouse, where I’m the only guest, is full of things for me to do in town.
I’m to start off at the fish market, then on to the park…..
At the fish market I don’t feel so welcome as I’m seen as taking up the place of someone who might buy some fish, so it goes.
Some of the people are interested in where I’m from though.
Two young girls ask if I speak Japanese, 'no’, I tell them.
They jokingly say that they don’t believe me.
Then when I tell them I’m from Ireland they find it hard to understand.
Later I go to the international cemetery, which is mentioned in all maps and guidebooks as a thing to see in Hakodate.
It’s a bit outside of town, small scale and of no great particular interest other than the story it tells in the history of modern Japan.
There’s a separate Russian cemetery and an impressive Russian Orthodox church
which also comes from history and tells of our relative geographic closeness to Russia.
I go for dinner to a restaurant in a Pachinko hall.
Pachinko is another Japanese obsession.
Its a machine that you feed with tokens and little metal balls run around, lights flash and there’s a lot of noise, a lot of noise.
That’s what I made out of it anyway!
For the fine price of 310 Yen I get a bowl of rice topped with small chicken fillets, a separate bowl of udon noodles topped with seaweed.
Pachinko players taking a break from pachinko come in to fill their bellies on subsidized food.
A healthy older couple in their 60’s come in for food. They talk to the waitress and cook, two women in the late 40’s/ early 50’s.
The husband does the talking mostly. He seems a bit over familiar with them.
Not in a nasty way, just not in the reserved Japanese way that people who don’t know other usually treat in public.
The women giggle like schoolgirls, maybe he’s telling them how much he won on pachinko.
He doesn’t look like the kind of guy that would sink all his money in a pachinko machine.
Afterwards I take a walk around the pachinko hall.
In Japan you don’t 'win’ money as such when you win at pachinko. Although there are ways around this.
In Tokyo you bring the metal balls you won from the machine to a nearby apparently non-affiliated store and they pay out cash.
In Hakodate you bring your winnings to a different part of the pachinko hall and you can exchange your winnings for goods, everything from toilet rolls to watches.
From Hakodate I took a bus to the major city of Hokkaido, Sapporo.

What is a 1t/h Chicken Feed Making Machine?
Chicken feed machine is suitable for small and medium-sized agricultural farms, such as raising rabbits, chickens, ducks, geese, fish, pigs, cattle, sheep, water, and other farmers. Chicken feed-making machines can also produce sinking fish feed, as well as powder, pellets, crushed materials, lump materials, etc.
1. Raw material receiving and storage (cleaning) Impurities in the raw materials not only affect the growth of animals, but also easily cause blockage of pipelines and equipment, and even damage equipment (screens, ring molds, etc.). Screening, magnetic separation, and suction dust removal methods can be used.
2. Smash The purpose of crushing: increase the specific surface area of the feed, improve the digestion and utilization of the feed by the animal; improve the quality of the subsequent processes such as ingredients, mixing, and pelleting, and improve the work efficiency of these processes.
3. Mixing process Ingredients are the process of feeding and metering various feed materials with specific ingredients in accordance with the requirements of the formula. Mixing is a process in which various material components are stirred and mixed after the feed product has been metered and formulated so that they are mixed and distributed evenly.
5. Avoid automatic grading of feed ingredients and reduce environmental pollution. In the process of powder storage and transportation, due to the different volumes and masses of various powders, it is easy to produce a classification. After the pellets are made, there is no classification of feed ingredients, and the pellets are not easy to dust. During the feeding process, the pellets have much less pollution to air and moisture than powders.
6. Kill Salmonella in animal feed. Salmonella will remain in animal tissues after being ingested by animals. People who eat animals infected with this bacteria will suffer from Salmonella gastrointestinal problems. The method of steam high-temperature tempering and re-granulation can kill Salmonella in animal feed.

Aquafeed Market Growth Analysis and Strategic Outlook (2023-2030)
Aquafeed refers to the specialized feed given to aquatic animals, particularly those reared in aquaculture systems such as fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. It is designed to provide the necessary nutrients for the growth and development of these animals, similar to how livestock feed is formulated for terrestrial animals.
Aquafeed typically consists of a combination of ingredients such as fish meal, fish oil, soybean meal, corn, wheat, and other grains. The exact composition of the feed can vary depending on the species being raised, their nutritional requirements, and the stage of their lifecycle.
Fish meal and fish oil are often used as key ingredients in aquafeed due to their high protein and omega-3 fatty acid content. However, the reliance on marine-derived ingredients has raised concerns about sustainability and overfishing of wild fish stocks. As a result, there has been an increasing interest in developing alternative protein sources for aquafeed, such as plant-based proteins, single-cell proteins, and insect-based proteins.
2. Growth Drivers of the Aquafeed Market:
Several factors contribute to the growth of the aquafeed market:
a. Increasing demand for seafood: The rising global population and growing consumer preference for seafood are driving the demand for aquaculture products, thereby boosting the need for aquafeed.
b. Expansion of aquaculture industry: Aquaculture has witnessed significant expansion due to declining wild fish stocks, which has led to increased reliance on farmed fish and seafood. This expansion drives the demand for aquafeed.
c. Technological advancements: Innovative technologies have led to the development of efficient and cost-effective aquafeed formulations, promoting market growth.

c. Crustacean Feed: Specifically formulated for crustaceans like prawns, crabs, and lobsters, it consists of marine and plant-based ingredients.
d. Mollusk Feed: Tailored for mollusks such as oysters and mussels, it mainly comprises microalgae, phytoplankton, and other plant-based ingredients.
e. Sinking Feed: Designed to sink rapidly to feed bottom-dwelling species like catfish, it usually contains higher protein and lipid levels.
f. Floating Feed: Formulated for surface-feeding species like trout and salmon, it is designed to float on the water's surface and maintain its shape.
4. Key Ingredients in Aquafeed:
a. Fishmeal: A crucial protein source in aquafeed, obtained from ground-up fish or fish byproducts.
b. Fish Oil: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil is an essential energy source and contributes to the growth and health of aquatic animals.
c. Plant Proteins: Derived from sources like soybean, corn, and canola, plant proteins are used as an alternative to fishmeal, reducing dependency on marine resources.
d. Additives and Supplements: Vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and probiotics are added to aquafeed to enhance growth, immune response, and overall health.
5. Market Trends and Challenges:
a. Sustainable and alternative ingredients: The aquafeed industry is witnessing a shift towards sustainable and alternative ingredients to reduce reliance on fishmeal and fish oil, promoting the use of plant-based proteins and oils.

Goldfish Care!
Goldfish are some of the most commonly abused pets on the market. I would like to start this post by saying BOWLS ARE NOT APPROPRIATE HOMES FOR FISH! There are very few times a bowl is a good choice for a home. If that bowl is 30 gallons with a filter and a heater at the bottom, perhaps.
To start, goldfish can can live anywhere from 10-15 YEARS some living as long as 20. They often don't live this long due to poor conditions.
There are multiple different kinds of goldfish, all that require different kinds of care. For the sake of this post, I will be focusing on common goldfish.
None of these fancy fellows pictures above. If there was interest in a post about these guys, let me know!
It is recommended that a common goldfish is not kept in less than 30 gallon tanks. Thirty. This is due to the impressive size a goldfish can grow to, as well as their desire to live in schools. It is recommended that you add 12 gallons per fish. Single goldfish can be kept in around 20 gallons, adding for every one you have.
(fun fact, goldfish and coy fish are related!)
For your tank you will need:
Filters, an air pump, lights, plants, decorations, substrate, a cleaning kit, a water testing kit, and a water treatment kit.
As mentioned in the betta fish post, tap water MUST be treated before putting in your fish. Goldfish do not require a heater though, as they don't mind a range in temperature.
It is recommended to give your goldfish a weekly water change of 1/3 of your tank. Remember, this is 10 gallons of water every week.
Feeding your goldfish is relatively simple, most pet stores sell flakes and pellets that will suffice, but there are numerous options for feeding your goldfish. In fact, if you can avoid flakes at all. The reason for this is that flakes are difficult to clean and can pollute your tank. The most recommended food for your goldfish are sinking pellets. Sinking pellets are easy to scoop out of the water, and rather than floating, which can cause your fish to swallow air and bloat, sink to your fish so they can eat properly. You can also feed your goldfish veggies, with boiled shelled peas being the most healthy. Sometimes a treat of a frozen brine shrimp or other creature is welcome, too!
Like all things, variation is key and your fish will thank you for it!
In all, while goldfish aren't the most demanding pet you can own, there is a lot of taxing, and expensive work that goes into keeping them healthy and happy. If I were to recommend a starter pet for a family, I would never recommend a goldfish. Remember to always do your research!!

10 Best Bass Fishing Lures For those Who Love Angling
Angling is one of the oldest and most popular sports in the world. It’s been around for centuries, and for good reason: it’s a lot of fun. And if you love bass fishing, you know that the key to success is finding the right bass fishing lure. In this blog post, we’re going to outline 10 of the best bass fishing lures on the market today. From spinner baits to frog hooks, read on to find the perfect lure for your needs.
What are some of the best baits for bass fishing?
There are many different baits that can be used for bass fishing, depending on what you are looking for. Some of the best baits for bass fishing include worms, spoons, jigs, flies, crankbaits and bait casings. Worms are a popular bait choice because they offer a lot of action. Spoons are also a good choice because they can be fished deep or shallow and offer a lot of variety. Jigs are perfect for casting into tight spots and can be fished slow or fast. Flies work well when targeting fish in close to shore or in deeper water. Crankbaits provide plenty of motion and can be fished at different speeds to imitate certain types of prey items such as small fish or worms. Bait casings offer an extra step in attracting bass by simulating live baitfish.
What are some of the best ways to catch bass?
There are a lot of great ways to catch bass, but some of the most popular methods include fishing from a boat, using crankbaits and spinnerbaits, and casting jigs and flies. In this article, we'll focus on the best bass fishing lures for each type of angling method. When it comes to fishing from a boat, one of the best options is a spinning reel with a baitcaster setup. This will allow you to cast very close to the fish, which is important because bass are shy and tend to get spooked easily. Another great option when fishing from a boat is using a jigging outfit. These outfits come with weights so that you can sink your bait into the water column right near where the bass are feeding. When it comes to using crankbaits and spinnerbaits, one of the best options is something in the overall size range of 1/4-inch to 3/8-inch wide. You'll want to make sure that your bait has lots of action and looks like something that would be eaten by a bass. When fishing from a boat, it's also important to use heavy line when casting these baits in order to keep them anchored down so they don't get pulled out of the water by the current. Finally, when it comes to casting flies or jigs, one of the best techniques is always to target areas where there are lots of biting spots close together
Conclusion
Bass fishing is a popular sport that can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of their experience level. In this article, we have compiled 10 of the best bass fishing lures for those who are new to the sport or simply looking to up their game. From spinnerbaits to jigs, we have something for everyone. So get out there and start catching some fish!

I know I said I would stop complaining about my family, but I don't know if this counts as complaining so much as . . . bewilderment
While I was showering, this dramatic fucker came back from loafing around my grandmother's house at the main estate all day since sunrise, and when I came out to carry on with my evening business, oh, he's packing a little bento filled with what he says is "nothing", his clothes for tomorrow in a reusable grocery tote on his shoulder, mournfully sighing and muttering to himself.
"Why are you packing the sticky rice?" I ask him. "I can just make a fresh pot tomorrow if you want it for lunch tomorrow."
"I'm going," he tells me, like he's the poorest little orphan boy that even slummed the streets. "I'm so tired and hungry, and you guys didn't care to make me anything, boohoo."
"..." I try not to look at him like he's the biggest idiot alive. "There's a side and a half of the fattest tilapia fish Mum could find in the market that we baked early, in the fridge. And a plate of papaya salad enough to feed three people."
He... he full out acted like he didn't hear me, claimed again that there was nothing to eat, that he was exhausted, and then left, "considerately" letting me know to lock the door behind him.
After leaving his dirty socks by the kitchen sink
??????
Who the fuck is he trying to kid??????

A Brief ( but not really ) Complete ( but to be expanded upon ) History of the Realm ( based on about 8-9 years of headcanons and about 50 years of comic canon )
Long before there was Odin, Ve & Villi there were three brothers, Njord, Bor and Mimir....
The three sons of Buri. Njord, the eldest of the three brothers would succeed their father, leading their people into a time of peace and prosperity. Yet while their people flourished, the brothers could not find peace of their own. While Njord found joy in remaining within his borders, in making Vanaheim a place of learning, beauty, and culture, Bor sought to expand across the realms. Discontent with both his lot and the peaceful manner in which his brother lived, Bor left, taking those who agreed with him to a new home.
For many years Vanaheim flourished, her resources abundant with trees that could 'burn a bonfire to block out the sun' and oceans rich with fish that made for harbors bustling with ships and markets teeming with merchants and vendors. On their coasts vineyards thrived, their grapes fat, feeding on the rich soils and salt air. Their citadels rose high into the sky, a feat only possibly accomplished by the divine. The cities grew, crowned with jewels in the form of libraries, sprawling mouseions with courtyards bursting with beauty. The Vanir became looked down upon by the Aesir, regarded as the old gods, content, pampered.
Njord, Skadi & Freyja, in their marble palaces, became the symbol for this race of old gods. Beautiful, pleasure-seeking, gluttons. Content to remain in the company of scholars and musicians, sinking ever deeper into their magic and mysticism instead of fortifying themselves. Living upon their past glories while ignoring the ever-growing threat in the form of Asgard, now ruled by Bor's son, Odin. A man much like his father, but with even bigger dreams of what Asgard could be.
The Aesir regarded them with suspicion, distrusting their way of life and their abilities, yet Odin did not come first with force. First, he came as a student, eager to learn their ways, a young king with the freedom to explore the realms. He became a devoted student of Freyja's, fascinated by both her skills and beauty. By her fierceness in battle as well, this woman-- these people, were not the sort that his father had once described to him, and his next moves would have to be carefully calculated.
It was during this time that the young Aesir king met Frigga, a ward of Njord, a talented sorceress, gifted with the ability of prophecy. A woman who had seen his arrival years prior, and knew her role in his story. It was this chance encounter in the summer palace's gardens that gave Odin his grand idea. He could not marry Freyja, Njord's heir, but perhaps he could marry Frigga, a woman of standing in their court-- and in exchange, Freyja would marry one of his brothers.
Freyja objected to such a match, both that she would have to marry the second-born Ve and that she would have no hand in her marriage choice. She went so far as to refuse to leave Vanaheim and barricaded herself in her chambers on the night of their union. The union was never consummated, as with a queen to keep his affairs in order Odin could begin making his father's dream a reality, bringing Ve along with him. For years, wars raged, Odin's reach spreading across the realm like a dark cloud that rained blood down upon the earth.
Yet, Vanaheim was meant to remain untouched, their treaty keeping Asgard's influence to that of an ally, rather than an overlord, and they continued to know peace.
Then, what was meant to be the final war was over. With the birth of Thor and the banishment of Hela, Odin turned his forces upon Jotunheim, and with eight of the Nine Realms under his control, and plans for Vanaheim to fall under their control within his son's lifetime, he was content. At least, until Ve returned to Vanaheim, intent to see his marriage honored, and found Freyja pregnant. In his absence, she had taken a lover, Iwaldi, and along with showering her with gold and jewels, he had given her a child as well.
News reached Asgard quickly and what had once been a misgiving toward the Vanir became a festering hatred for them. In the eyes of the Aesir their prince and their friendship had been shamed. What had taken years to build between them would be ruined in nine short months.
The marriage was declared null and void, and though Freyja kept her life, she lost her reputation, becoming a harlot, a seductress in the eyes of all of Asgard. And with the birth of her first daughter, Sigyn, she would lose her realm as well. With no treaty between them, the two tribes of gods went to war.
In Vanaheim, Njord, Freyja, and the newly returned Freyr called upon the anti-Aesir sentiment that had sprung up in the conquered realms to fight back against Odin's aggression. It was Sutur, who took up their call, granting them his fire, his force, in the first battle with the Aesir. At first, Vanaheim held strong against Odin's forces. Its royal family leading many a charge against them...but time wore on, gold was quickly spent, for Vanaheim's defenses had long since grown out of date, its army made up mostly of poorly trained young men, better suited for building the next arena for games than war. Even with their magic, it was a lost cause.
For years they were forced back, further and further as Odin gained ground until one day they found him at the city gates. His army was vast, equipped to wait them out, trained to spread through the city like a plague, slaughtering everyone in their path. And though Freyja and Njord refused to kneel, their people did, fearful of what would become of them should they resist. There was no choice but to lay down their weapons and surrender to Odin.
But he was clever about it, and he forced Freyja to renounce her claim and have Njord decree Odin as his heir before abdication. In the long years of war, Freyja's eldest daughter had grown as well, now a girl of what would appear as twelve she was clever, pretty, the sort of girl who would someday fetch a great marriage price. The sort of princess who might have once been an heir, one Njord and Freyja would not risk the life of. Decreeing it an act of mercy, in hope that the friendship between their peoples would someday be restored between the realms, he made Sigyn his ward. And so, Asgard gained a realm and its means to keep its displaced royalty in line.
In his absence, Odin decreed a governor of sorts, while allowing the royal family to keep its titles ( though Njord was only known as a jarl now ). And the realm fell into disrepair. Heavy taxes were levied to pay for the losses Asgard had incurred, to teach a lesson that rebellion had a price. The beautiful marble palaces that had gleamed in the sunlight became cracked, the fine quays and roads of their cities becoming unusable. Inside of the libraries that had once been their pride and joy cobwebs grew, their collections gathering dust while the capitol's library had been picked over.
They were a shadow of what they had been, and Njord became imbittered. The years of his life that were meant to be spent watching over his prosperous realm would now be spent wasting away in his summer palace. Watching from his window facing the sea as the realm around him crumbled.
While Vanaheim fell to ruin, Asgard grew fat on her riches. Building with her resources, deifying themselves with the gold stolen from her palaces, yet Odin had made a mistake in selecting Sigyn as his hostage. The girl took the new opportunities she saw before herself, learning seidr from Frigga, eventually healing from Eir. Becoming dutiful in not only her lessons but in her observations, the daughter of Freyja knew when to be quiet, to observe, and when to present herself as an asset Odin could not afford to lose. He grew to disdain her for it.
Of course it was not an easy life, Vanaheim became mistified in the eyes of the Aesir once more. A realm of lechers. Of witches who would lure men to their ruin. Many saw her as one, especially when the second prince's eye turned toward her. Unlike her mother before her, she loved him too, and they planned in secret to find ways to marry, to return to Vanaheim and restore it to its former glory with Thor's blessing.
But that dream did not come to fruition, and following the crisis of Thor's cancelled coronation and Loki's regency, Vanaheim would find itself in ruins. Cut off from Asgard the realm descended into chaos, the forces needed to enact Odin's will could not reach the realm. A year of rebellion ensued, though the old king never lifted his finger, and held no hopes for a Vanir victory. He let his daughter handle it, allowed her to meet in secret to attempt a restoration to the old ways while in Asgard his granddaughter waged a different war.
With Loki gone and Thor attempting to quiet rebellions all over the Nine, Sigyn remained in Asgard, carrying Loki's child, and with it, the only certain future Odin had to keep his dynasty alive. She used it to her advantage, for, at that moment, she was the future of Asgard, and everyone knew it. Even with the validity of such a union being questioned, she pushed for greater freedoms for Vanaheim, for at the end of the day bastard or not, her sons would occupy both Thor & Loki’s place in the years to come. But it was always a delicate balance, a chance to take that might end up with her head on a spike the moment she gave birth.
This was strategy she would maintain when Thor once more disappeared and 'Odin' resumed ruling, though this time he seemed much more willing to allow her wishes. With Loki pretending to be Odin, Asgard's grip on Vanaheim loosened, and a slow restoration began. She grew bolder in her strategies while letting her family she had not seen in centuries know of the changes to be made, to cut entirely the possibilities of their keeper ‘forgetting’. It was not long before governor was sent back to Asgard, and Njord allowed to act in his place once more. Sigyn sent what funds she could and Njord allowed ‘errors’ in the ledgers. But this tentative return to glory could not last, Njord was growing older each day, and knew death was not far beyond his reach. His final triumph in life was learning of Odin’s death, and the fall of Asgard. Upon Sigyn’s return to them he slipped quietly from life, content in the knowledge that Vanaheim would once more be great.
With the fall of Asgard came the return of Vanaheim's heir. For five years she worked in secret, trading missives and overseeing first the reconstruction of the quays, and the roads, allowing the people's livelihoods to be returned, then the libraries and houses of art, and finally, when the treat of Thanos' retaliation against Loki's sons gone, Vanaheim had its first official monarch in centuries. Her coronation took place not in a palace, or in a grand mouseion with musicians and poetry marking the begin of a glorious reign, but by the ocean, the very body that had once been their lifeblood. The occasion was marked by no fanfare, for what sort of queen would allow for such frivolity when her people still starved in parts of her realm. When at its furthest reaches, now fallen Aesir soldiers and jarls still refused to loosen their grip and villages suffered.
In the years since the work has not stopped, and Vanaheim's influence continues to grow in a vision combining both Njord & Bor's. Peaceful, a place of learning, but one that exercises her might in the form of innovation and grows her power through diplomacy. The royal family too is a combination of such visions, Vanir and Aesir, a Queen, a consort, two princes and a princess meant to not only rebuild Vanaheim to its former glory but shape her into their own image. A future far beyond what the original brothers or their successors could have imagined.

MIROUNGA LINDWYRM
Miroungadraco major & Miroungadraco minor
"The Mirounga is a large, semi-social mammalian sea dragon. The females lives in large pods which offer protection in numbers. Their diet consists mainly of fish and squid, which they ambush with their long extendable neck. On very rare occasions they have been spotted following orcas and stealing food from them. Mirounga are usually very docile, but large males have been known to sink small vessels, viewing them as a threat. They use their armored body like a battering ram and slam into the underside of the vessels. The aggression they display towards boats may not be unwarranted, however, as there has been an increase in the poaching of these sea dragons for their meat, oil, fat, and ivory - which fetch a high price on the black market. During mating season males compete for the right to mate. This typically involves inflating the pleated skin on their neck to intimidate rivals. Rarely do these stand offs end in violence. One dominant male will form a harem and defend the females and his pups from predators and rival males. The rest of the year males are asocial and nomadic, following feeding grounds and places of rest. Bulls have been observed attacking whaling boats. Incidents like these have shown how ferocious the Mirounga can be when they attack."

Chapter 22: How I Met Your Mother
[prev] [next]
[masterlist]
“Okay, listen up my children!” Kiyoomi announces in the middle of the living room, the kids all looking up to him. “Your mother won’t be around for 3 days-”
Kin starts crying because of his father’s words, taking Sakusa aback. His boy must love you so much since he’s the only who seems affected that you are away. The girls... don’t care.
“Don’t cry! Don’t cry! We are only 30 minutes in and you’re already crying,” Kiyoomi sighs, picking Kin up from the ground.
“You should not have mentioned mama,” Kia scolds him. Kia takes a seat on the couch which Mina and Mira follows. She is their leader, not Kiyoomi. If a hierarchy is made in your house it would turn out like this:
You
Kia
Mina
Mira
Kin
Kiyoomi
Yes. Sakusa Kiyoomi, the provider and the pillar of the house, is at the lowest ranking in your house, simply because he isn’t around all the time. He only goes home once or twice a month, leaving all the childcare and managing of the house to you. The wedding planning is only the side dish of what’s on your plate. He has so much respect for you that he’s willing to lower his pride and hurt his ego.
Kiyoomi is more than happy to take care of the kids for you. You get to rest and he gets to spend time with your children. It’s a win-win situation for the two of you.
“Mama!” Kin cries harder, and Sakusa bounces him on his arm, hoping it will stop him.
“If you stop crying we will go see the fish!” Kiyoomi cheers and Kin stops crying. “We will change now and then go see fish.”
“Really?” Kia questions her father, already old enough to be aware of Kiyoomi’s fear of crowds and germs. She knows that there is no way that their dad will bring the four of them in the aquarium. Especially since it’s a weekend, so it’ll be packed with people.
And Kia was right. Kiyoomi didn’t bring them to the aquarium, but to a small fish market. Kia is disappointed but not surprised. At least Kiyoomi tried, right? “Where’s the fish?” Kin asks, looking around as he sits in his stroller. The place only has a few people and small stalls, which Kiyoomi really likes.
They stop in front of a stall where fish are laid on trays of ice, shocking the twins. Kia just face palms, and Mina is just standing there but is also in disbelief. “What? It’s fish.” Kiyoomi defends himself, shrugging.
“It’s dead,” Mina remarks as she stares at the deceased sea creatures in front of her.
“A fish is a fish,” Kiyoomi argues. Kia scans through the surrounding and spots a small tank with king crabs in it. She points at it so they go to it. Kin and Mira are now out of their stroller and are almost glued to the glass tank. The owner of the shop comes out asks if they’re going to it at the store. Kiyoomi says yes, since the kids look so excited to be seeing crab for the first time.
What he didn’t take in account is that the kids will recognize that the crab they were staring at outside is now their food. Cue the loud crying from Kin and Mira. The number of times Kia has face palmed because of her father is uncountable. Mina is chill, playing with the claws of the cooked crab, making her younger siblings cry even more.
“Stop crying. Try it!” Mina puts a piece of meat in Mira’s mouth and she stops. Kin halts as well, confused why his twin stopped wailing. Kia feeds him the crab and he falls in love with it. Kiyoomi sighs in relief, very thankful that he has reliable daughters.
One task done.
Their lunch finally ends and they head to the toy store. Kiyoomi has already planned to buy kinetic sand for the twins since he can’t bring them to the beach. It’s a scary place. He might be the most cautious guy in the country, but he’s still like any clumsy father. The chances of him losing one kid at that place is high.
“Do you wanna walk?” Kiyoomi asks the twins, not wanting to carry a stroller around. The two nod so he takes out the safety harness and puts it on them. Mina and Kia are holding hands, walking obediently beside their father. The family of 5 enters the store and the kids become excited immediately.
“We can buy anything we want?” Kia asks in awe, which Kiyoomi just nods to. “Let’s go Mina!”
“Don’t go with strangers, okay?” Kiyoomi tells them as the two run off somewhere in the store. He picks up tubs of kinetic sand, clay, and slime. Then, he follows the twins around the store, picking up whatever they seemed interested in.
“You want that toy car?” Kiyoomi asks Mira, picking them up from the ground so they can see a clearer view of the toys. Kin points at a toy gun at another shelf. “I’m sorry, buddy, but you can’t use that yet, and maybe your mama will shoot me using that if she finds out I bought you one.”
As Kiyoomi and the twins are picking more stuffed animals, Kia and Mina come running towards him. “Papa! Papa! Can I buy a bike?” Kia pleads, tugging on Kiyoomi’s pants. He takes a deep breath in before agreeing to his eldest daughter.
“Where are your toys?” Kiyoomi asks them, seeing that the two girls are empty handed.
“I only want a bike and Mina wants a picture book,” Kia answers. Kiyoomi furrows his eyebrows in disappointment, but in his mind he’s actually really happy that the girls seem to be taking saving into consideration.
“Are you sure?” Kiyoomi raises an eyebrow at them.
“Can I buy a skateboard too...?” Kia shyly requests, doing a cute pose. Kiyoomi chuckles and agrees with her.
“How about you Minari?” Kiyoomi asks the younger girl.
“I want paint,” Kia nonchalantly says and Kiyoomi does a thumbs up to her. After that, they start to run to wherever they can get their wants. Kiyoomi walks after his kids, the twins already asleep in his arms, their heads on his shoulder. He spots Kia, scanning through the wide catalog of bikes, a small skateboard already tucked below her underarms.
“Can I get the blue one?” Kia tells the employee who is assisting her, pointing at the baby blue bike she wants.
“You don’t want the pink one?” The employee asks, presenting the pink bike. Kia looks at him in disgust.
“Do you think girls only like pink?” Kia remarks, taking the employee by surprise. Kiyoomi smiles under his mask, amused by his daughter’s words. He internally taps the his back because he’s pretty much the reason behind her attitude. He’s proud to say that he has raised his children not to believe in gender norms.
Kiyoomi feels someone tug on his pants, so he looks down and sees Mina holding a small cart filled with coloring materials, picture books and papers. “Is that all you want?” Mina nods and holds his hand.
After checking Kia’s bike they head to the cashier to pay. Kiyoomi then realizes that he has done the one thing you told him not to do. Spend money on the kids. But you won’t know right?
One task has been failed.
As they reach the house, all the kids immediately go to the bathroom to wash. Kiyoomi knows that they adapted this habit from him, and he feels happy that they’re understanding his personality even at a young age. Kia even sprays alcohol in her sibling’s hand every time they come back to the car. It’s the little things his little kids are doing for him that makes him love them even more.
The four of them falls asleep after the bath so Kiyoomi arranges the stuff they bought. As he is arranging Mina’s books, he notices the abundant number of books that included dogs. “Does she likes dogs?”
Kiyoomi is tired. He has never felt this tired after intense games or practices. Childcare is a whole new level of tired. Just when he thought he can rest, Mina walks out of her shared room with Kia. “Hi, baby. Did you sleep well?” Kiyoomi asks Mina which she doesn’t respond to. Instead, she comes close to him and hugs his leg. Surprisingly, Mina starts crying. “What’s wrong?”
“I missed you, papa,” Mina explains. Kiyoomi sits on the foamed floor of the living room, giving Mina a hug.
Mina has always been quiet. She always waits for her turn silently. She never begs for attention even if she wants it deeply. Mina only shows affection towards you and Kiyoomi when she’s alone with you, but with her siblings around, she gives way to them. Sometimes, Kiyoomi feels guilty because of this. Unlike Kia, Mina has never spent time with you and Kiyoomi on her own. Plus, she was then followed by the twins when she was still a baby. He’s afraid that Mina might start thinking that she is less important than her siblings.
“I missed you, too, Minari,” Kiyoomi says back. He puckers his lips so Mina gives him a short kiss. He hugs her once again, calming her down from her cry. She calms down so Kiyoomi takes this as a chance to trim her bangs. “Should we cut your hair?”
The two of them go to your shared bathroom as quiet as they can, not wanting to wake the other kids up. Kiyoomi sits Mina down on the sink, then takes a pair of scissors out of the drawers. “Don’t move, okay?” He starts to cut her bangs, thinking he’s doing a good job. But once he lets go of her hair, the room becomes silent.
Sakusa messed up. Big time.
Mina checks her reflection at the mirror and giggles. “Weird,” Mina says in between laughter, causing Kiyoomi to chuckle as well.
“Your mom will be so mad at me...” He cuts some more length off, but no matter how hard he tries, it’s just an uneven. He then decides to stop, not wanting his daughter to look like an unidentified animal.
“I like it, papa. Thank you.” She doesn’t like it, but she doesn’t want to break her father’s heart. Mina hugs Kiyoomi after taking a look at the mirror. Kiyoomi kisses her cheek, then laughs at the result.
“You’re still cute.”
Two tasks done.
As they return to the living room, they see Kia sitting on the living room couch, staring at the wall emptily. She sees Mina’s new hairstyle and grimaces. “You’re bad at cutting hair, papa,” Kia says, unfiltered. Unlike Mina who is considerate like you, Kia is as blunt as Kiyoomi. He doesn’t say anything back since she was right.
“Can you teach Mina the alphabet while I make dinner?” Kiyoomi requests and Kia nods in agreement. Mina goes to Kia while Kiyoomi goes to the kitchen to make dinner. He’s thankful that he has such a reliable daughter. He would probably not make it without Kia around.
Three tasks done. Somehow.
At first, Kia was teaching Mina the alphabet, but then she had to go to Kiyoomi’s bathroom to wash her hands, and that’s when she saw Kiyoomi’s ripped jeans that he wore a day before in the laundry basket. She hurriedly called Mina and ordered her to bring paper and glue.
“Is papa poor?” Mina gasps as Kia presents the ripped jeans to her. They sadly look at the piece of clothing and feel bad for buying so much at the toy store while their father was wearing clothes with holes in it.
The older girl flattens the pair of jeans on the floor and starts to glue the colored paper over the torn parts. Mina mimics Kia and does the same thing to the other leg of the pants. Kiyoomi, still in the kitchen, wonders why he suddenly can’t hear his children. It’s never good when they’re silent.
“Kia! Mina! Where are you?” Kiyoomi shouts and he hears small footsteps coming from his room. He checks over the counter and sees his pants are now covered in decorative paper. He almost drops the knife he is holding from the sudden transformation of his pants.
“We covered the holes in your pants papa! You might get cold!” Kia reasons as she shows off their little project. How can he get mad at them when they are just worried about him?
“Thank you, Kia, Mina,” he laughs and snaps a picture of them on his phone. Things that his kids do that don’t make sense but is damn adorable.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Just go to bed. I beg you,” Kiyoomi pleads to his children who are still jumping on the bed. “It’s already almost 12AM. Please sleep.”
Kiyoomi is damn tired. How do you handle the four of them on your own? He suddenly feels bad for leaving you alone with them. And he hasn’t heard a complain from you even once. His love for you has become deeper just from taking care of the kids in one day.
“Bedtime story!” Kia cheers, putting herself inside the blanket, which her siblings follow. Kiyoomi sighs in relief. Finally.
“What kind of story do you want?” Kiyoomi tucks the blankets properly on their bodies, making sure that the four of them are comfortable in his bed.
“How did you meet mama?” Kia asks, causing Kiyoomi to smile.
“How I met your mother, huh?” Kiyoomi hums, thinking about how you first met. His smile grows, remembering every detail of how you met.
The first time Sakusa had met you was in Itachiyama. You were outside the volleyball gym, and he was on his way to practice. For some odd reason, you were smelling the roses by the wall. He thought you were the weirdest person he had encountered and judged you right then and there. After that, he would notice how you came to the same spot to smell the roses every single day. He didn’t even understand what smelled so good about them. He may or may have not tried smelling them after practice just to check why you kept smelling them.
It went on for weeks, but Sakusa never thought of talking to you. He just didn’t see see a reason why he should. Until one day, it rained so heavily that he became so worried for unknown reasons. On his way to practice, he stopped by the usual spot where you would smell the flowers and he didn’t see you there. Of course you wouldn’t be there, it was raining so hard. He didn’t care about you.
He was sure he didn’t care until he found himself carrying a bouquet of roses one morning to give it to you. He couldn’t believe it himself. But he couldn’t contain his feelings anymore.
You were a virus that slowly corrupted his mind that all he could think of is you. Maybe it be in class, during practice, on his way home, before he sleeps, after he wakes and sometimes he even dreams about you. Your virus then slowly travelled to his heart. He couldn’t explain it but every time he saw you, his heart would pound so fast he felt like he would suffer from cardiac arrest.
But it was also you who soothed him. When he was feeling down, he thought of your smile after you smelled the roses and he’s back up again. The calm he felt when he passed by you in hallways was enough to encourage him to do great in practice and in games. He didn’t even know your name but he already has a mission of taking your last name and replacing it with his.
You were his illness and his cure.
His cousin, Komori, wasn’t surprised to see him standing by the school gates with flowers in his hands. As the libero saw the roses, he immediately knew Sakusa was waiting for you.
Sakusa was never quiet about his feelings judgement towards you. Everyday the spiker would complain to the libero about how weird you were. Each day, Sakusa had something new to complain about. You cut your hair? He would say it Komori. You painted your nails a new color? Komori would hear about it. You were wearing a different bag? Komori definitely knew about it from Sakusa.
Komori had concluded that Sakusa had developed a liking towards you but the latter hadn’t notice yet. So when it rained hard the day before and Sakusa’s plays were bad, Komori knew Sakusa would do something about it. Sakusa was an honest man, even to himself, especially to himself.
You were on your way to school, when you saw Sakusa standing by the gates. Of course you knew him. He was famous in your school despite his too blunt personality and germaphobic tendencies. You had a little crush on him, but you also were aware he’d never like you back. You’d go outside their gym everyday to smell on the flowers and see him. He was a happy a crush. So, seeing him with flowers outside your school broke your heart.
‘So he had a lover, huh?’
You walked past him, head lowered in defeat. You heard murmurs and whispers as you continued to walk but you ignore them, head full of sad thoughts. Suddenly, you felt a hand on your shoulder so you turned your head and saw Sakusa standing before you, handing you the bundle of flowers. Everyone else was staring at you and Komori was hiding somewhere, taking a picture of the commotion.
“I think you got the wrong person,” you chuckled awkwardly, not knowing what to do since other students were looking at the two of you. And Sakusa Kiyoomi, the ace of the volleyball team, your happy crush, the man of your dreams, was handing you a bouquet of roses.
“You’re the girl who smells the roses outside our gym every afternoon, right?” Sakusa said as he pulled his mask down.
You literally short circuited. He was much more taller and more gorgeous up close. He smelled good, too. But what surprised you the most was that he lowered his mask to talk to you. Maybe you saved the world once in your past life to be able to experience this.
You nodded unsurely, glancing around you in nervousness, not able to look him in the eye. “Forecast said it’ll rain later in the afternoon so you won’t be able to smell the flowers outside the gym. So take this.” Sakusa explained to you.
You couldn’t believe it. The boy who you had a secret crush on since the first day of school had noticed you. You didn’t expect anything at all. Considering how he was with people, you thought you didn’t have a chance so you never made a move aside from stealing glances and watching from a far. To say that your heart was beating fast and that you felt butterflies in your stomach was an understatement. One more word from him and you would probably burst.
“Is that so?” A smile slowly grew on your lips, finally making eye contact with him. You were trying so hard to play it cool, but your reddening cheeks were giving you off. “Thank you. I’m (Y/N) by the way.”
“You can call me Kiyoomi.”
“And from that day on, I would bring your mother a rose everyday,” Sakusa tells Kia, fondly looking his children, the products of your love.
“So you liked mama ever since you met her?” Kia asks, seeing her father smile foolishly. A small giggle leaves Kiyoomi’s mouth and Kia teases him. “Papa is a simp.”
“Where did you learn that?” Kiyoomi gasps.
“Momo,” Kia answers and Kiyoomi takes a mental note to smack his cousin when he sees him again. “Papa, do you love mama?”
“We wouldn’t have the four of you if I don’t,” Kiyoomi answers with a chuckle. He checks his other kids and they have already fallen asleep. “Now go to sleep.”
“Good night, papa,” Kia greets him before closing her eyes. “I love you and mama so much. I am happy you are our parents.”
“We love you more.” He kisses their forehead one by one, before settling on the edge of the bed. He takes his phone out and messages you, hoping you were still awake.
All tasks complete.
