So the book I am currently reading for uni is actually very good. The writing is so well done, and I am actually invested even though it's not a novel. The only problem I have at the moment is that I am not sure on how to take notes for it. There's so much information packed in every sentence, but since it's a sort of linear story of early modern oceanic explorations, with a main focus on Magellan it does feel less like a traditional non fiction book. I really don't know how much detail I have to put into these notes. What is for sure is that as long as I have a map near me to visually check where they are moving around the globe the book is quite approachable, and actually pretty interesting so far. I am definitely very aware of the fact that I am moving at a slower pace than normal, but I am doing what I can.
Tasks I conquered today:
continued reading and underlining the book I am studying
got a photocophy of a map to keep in the book to avoid going insane (and did some diy because I had to print it in two sections)
updated weekly to-do list
duolingo
commute + lecture

hey so what makes me insane is the fact that troy literally fought for playa despite being a cop. he didnt want to arrest playa bc they were friends. he (probably but most definitely) wasted so much money for 5 years straight to keep playa on life support. morals and occupation out the window man he did everything for the saints and for playa. frankly thats the gayest shit a man could do, devotion to his level

i know i often say that shams' original district is based on iran and that there are multiple races inspired by said area, but when it comes to the athyans and where shams grew up, i would say that they are heavily inspired by the lurs and their tribes (bakhtiari lurs in shams' case). there are obviously distinct differences between both, but it's said that tribal elders hold a strong authority in the main region and lur women have much greater freedom than women in other groups within the region. they have more freedom to participate in different social activities. traditionally lur-i-kuchek (modern provinces of luristan and ilam) comprised the entire belt of mountainous region. the entire area came under the control of a local dynasty and they maintained a semi - independent dynasty and paid tribute only when the supreme rulers of iran were strong enough to collect tribute by force and those are factors that stayed when it comes to the district and those are things that can be translated in her world
i like to think about this often because it parallels with the way shams grew up (her father teaching both her and her brother ways of battle, her having much more artistic freedom than the rest of her district's women and femme presenting people) and how her district viewed it when her father became king, simply because the main area has a large number of people who view certain groups of reera as "lesser". and shams' family was exactly that. when she first stepped into the role, the interactions started with her own people (alongside the zherkari who reside east of her district) because the support was already there due to how they already accepted her role as the sar - tāj (the chief’s due, the person who will follow in the elder's footsteps) and then she had to move onto the rest of the area

Okay I might just be reading too much into this. But while I was watching the episode *cough cough* procrastinating *cough cough I realised that they don't show how the Doctor and Ruby got there.
And I know that it's probably just meant to be vaguely like 'they just went for fun'.
BUT this is the third episode in a row where we haven't seen them arrive. And for 73 yards it was clearly a doctor who episode when it started but it immediately gets rid of the doctor. ( I know that for 73 yards and for dot and bubble it was because Ncuti Gatwa was filming other stuff but let me cook) In Dot and Bubble you could effectively be forgiven for assuming that it was a random Black Mirror episode or something similar until the Doctor turns up, and tbh if you were just flicking through channels and haven't been watching Doctor Who you could probably basically not know for much longer. In Rogue they are just there, except for the title screen (the same for dot and bubble) you could basically watch it as a Bridgerton episode until the Chuldur turn up.
(And there's whole other rant about how the Chuldur fits into the theory about this basically being a TV show within a TV show, I don't know the name for this theory)
But anyway these episodes are increasingly separated from the Doctor and Ruby as plot points particularly in the beginning of episodes. They are more and more like an excuse to tell the story or explore the topic that the writers want to explore. Which isn't totally different from the occasional episode of previous series, but this is a lot more in my memory at least from previous series. So it feels a lot like they are skimming over the more sci-fi doctor who elements. Which fits in in my mind to the idea that the 'One who waits' is a representation of story telling. I've seen theories that it's Ruby but she doesn't know it which makes sense, I think it would also make sense for it to be her parent(s) who left her, or alternatively just it's own thing all together. But it feels very like that bit where Amy is living a life and starts to realise it's all fake.
The narrowing down of these episodes into not showing them arriving, and at least in Rogue - I can't remember in the others - not showing them leaving the story, feels very different.
It feels more and more like story telling. They have covered fairy tales, Period pieces/Romance, Dystopia, War/SciFi, Musicals, Political Drama. They are also showing the doctor playing his role, something that we see companions doing often enough but we seldom see the doctor doing it.
In Space Babies he is scared of a new creature. In the Devil's Code he sings a song that makes little sense in the story, he doesn't question the road making noise. In Boom he's more himself but it's also the closes to his 'normal' environment. In 73 Yards they just fully remove him from the story, which I realise was done for filming requirements but would have been so interesting to see the doctor in a Political drama. In Dot and Bubble he plays the role of the outsider bringing information to those living under a Dystopia, how is he UNABLE to access the inside, sure he plays a role that's fairly similar to himself but Doctor Who is really Dystopian.
In Rogue he is becoming more and more his role, he is playing the role of a sort of Elizabeth Bennet style character, a strong romantic interest for the brooding man. Which is great, he makes fun of the genre, but he is hyper aware of the genre and still ends up in its pitfalls. He trusts a man so quickly he ends up handing over his sonic, he gets proposed to and basically immediately accepts. Now I am really hoping that Rogue gets to stay around I really liked him as a character, regardless of which theory of his identity if any are true. But the Doctors reaction to him is still a little out of character, he is feeling what he is SUPPOSED to feel and he is acting how he is SUPPOSED to act.
It just feels to me like an increasing number of these episodes are more and more story like and more and more separated from the more Doctor Who elements. And the lack of an introduction of how they get there, and the lack of them leaving in the TARDIS is so unusual to me and stands out to my brain so much.
It feels like they are removing elements that don't fit the genre. Anyway not sure if that makes any sense but I'm vibing with it.

LITERALLY ANYONE WITH A BRAIN WOULD KNOW#THAT THAT WOULD NEVER FUCKING WORK???? THAT IT'S THE STUPIDEST MOST NAIVE PLAN AND VIEW OF THE WORLD IMAGINABLE????#WHY ARE YOU ACTING LIKE THIS IS A TODDLER INSTEAD OF A GROWN-ASS SOLDIER WITH YEARS OF MILITARY EXPERIENCE#Fyodor feels like the only one at this point that hasn't truly lost the plot in all this...... the only one with a goddamn brain#I HATE THAT I HAVE TO AGREE WITH HIM!!!!!!!!! I HATE THAT IT FELT SO CATHARTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!#and i hate even more that the series clearly doesn't want us to agree with him and instead believe that fukuzawa is still right#even though he was spouting the most naive braindead bullshit imaginable that early series Fukuzawa would NEVER SAY#WHAT ABOUT YOUR CHILDREN BRO??? yknow. vanitas’ mark from luna is in a rather weird position for drinking blood. it’s almost as if he had his arms raised in self defense, for the star mark to be on the outside of his forearm.
and also, the two books of the blue moon just lean even further into vnc’s twins aspect
#vanitas no carte#the case study of vanitas#vanitas vnc#revisiting vnc to see if anything’s happened since i last thought abt it and#hmm.#also still convinced that misha’s arm was lost around the time vanitas killed luna#leading him to think that for all intents and purposes misha should be dead prior to the carnival#also kinda wondering abt the circus connection w naenia/malnomen & vanitas’ dads’ troupe#also. i can’t help but feel vanitas’ mom will be important. given that she inadvertently had such a huge affect on his psyche#vanitas calls luna ‘she’ bc he was missing a mom & misha ‘father’ bc he didn’t have a father#& i can’t help but wonder if vanitas is ‘naenia’s’ son from when she was a vampire (as the queen’s twin) or something along those lines#to make that circus/naenia malnomen/vanitas grew up in a circus/twins/why he’s been so resistant to being rewritten so far#& no70 is a vampire to me. 69&71 were humans -> vampires experiment. 70 was vampire -> human experiment. to me.#it’s 3:30am idk what i’m saying at this point.#also. vanitas asking noé to kill him -> blue rewriting vanitas -> once he’s been too rewritten he’ll no longer be ‘vanitas’#so i can see him seeing death being a kindness. bc it’d no longer be him#or maybe luna & the queen r twins and there’s another set of twins naenia & ??? idk. they all have similar hair#& luna is ‘not from than world’ so maybe their original self was just entirely rewritten making them ‘not from this world’#the naenia claws/bracelets/hair connections w luna and then vanitas w the claws lives in my brain whoever#as does the kissing connections. anyways. vanitas is gonna kiss noé at some pt w connection to malnomen & i stand by that#(also. twins & having one ‘true name’ bc of that leading to the idea of one being cursed)#(idk if we’ll ever learn vanitas’ birth name bc of its connection w his ‘true’ self that’s being rewritten)#(however. i know it’d be thematically on point if we do ever learn it. names have power! & we’ve never learned vanitas’ protecting him)

♠ — IF YOU WERE A DEITY, WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DOMAIN?
Tumblr media
WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE. you are the divine guardian of truths both knowable and unknowable, of all words and languages spoken and unspoken. much like Death itself, you are perhaps one of the least understood of all deities, and yet the secrets you hold are highly sought after by scientists, philosophers, and theologians alike.
the origin of all innovation, your realm is the source of crucial advances in architecture, agriculture, political governance, and military strategy which have allowed many civilizations to become a dominant force in the mortal realm. your domain may also include the forces of magic and mysticism, and many cautionary tales exist among mortals of those who have unwittingly destroyed themselves or lost their minds in the reckless pursuit of mysteries and technology far beyond their comprehension.
your mythological equivalents are greece’s athena, egypt’s thoth, mesopotamia’s enki, and india’s ganesha.

#( dash games. ) ALRIGHT YOU OVERGROWN LARPERS! HERE!#OUGH this one was DELICIOUS. the questions! the answer options!! the result!!!#this answer is so tasty too like. you KNOW people would get the wrong idea about john acting as a guardian of truth.#you KNOW the general assumption would be that he's hoarding all the world's secrets for his own private use.#when the takeaway SHOULD be that the dude holding the key to raising his own empire is choosing each day not to pop the lock#john constantine as a deity of wisdom + knowledge is like if the prophet cassandra worked for pre-crime in the minority report#i mean!! how many times has he pushed people away from the truth in an attempt to protect them?#and how many times has the fact that HE'S the one pushing been the thing to make his good intentions blow up in his face?#Him. John Constantine. the guy who can't look away even when his curiosity is putting everyone around him at risk.#the guy making excuse after excuse for why HE just HAS to be the one to solve the mystery. fix the problem. stick his nose in.#HE'S the guy gatekeeping all the answers? saying 'iT's SaFeR iF yOu DoN't KnOw'? you've gotta be fucking kidding me.#motherfucker it is NOT safer if we don't know bc you have ALREADY made things not safe for everyone REGARDLESS!!#imo that's the whole reason gemma bites his head off when he tries to shut her out from dealing w/ the rosacarnis kids#despite 1) her already being involved by virtue of They Tried To Kill Her and 2) her involvement at all being His Fault bc they're His Kids#(tho that's just her angry perspective on the matter. since she didn't see what had been happening to john before she was targeted)#this is one of the areas where he is first and foremost a prisoner of his own persona i fear.#his hypocrisy is so legendary that it makes hypocrites of the people he tries to be honest with#he guards the truths of the world not bc they're desirable but bc the cost of keeping a secret is not even HALF the cost of Knowing#he's already overpaid. no refunds. the least he can do is try to dissuade others from Also paying more than the knowing is worth#anyway. one of these days i will not talk so much in the tags. but it turns out i have Feelings about this aspect of his life#ZERO people trust him to be honest but EVERYONE trusts that he knows the truth already. does this make sense#he's expected to keep the world's confidences but never allowed to keep secrets of his own. DOES this make sense!!!!#( character study. ) A WALKING PLAGUE OF A MAN.#sched.

interesting ideas about AI art and by no means am I trying to send hate but I believe majority of people hate AI art is because it's truly just the byproduct of a giant plinko board bouncing through pieces of art made by artists who put love and care and SOUL into their work. A visual product of a math formula. While it's "art" in the most litteral sense, not having a true human behind it putting though and effort into its every detail, for many people (myself included) devalues it from a tradition artists work.
I'm a firm believer in the idea that AI art is inherently unequal to non Ai art, specifically for this reason. (Hope this made sense sorry if it's incoherent)
I agree in that sense there. I personally do not find myself wanting to engage in a work when I purposefully know the creator had used AI to create the entire product. Something something,,,I cannot find myself getting invested in something that is little more than a product. I don't wanna read a fic about my blorbos when it was written by Chat-GPT
I also agree with the idea that a lot of people hate AI art because of this heavily emotional, debatably reactionary mindset that stems from one thing: fairness. It's the same sort of emotion I find one gets if all of the work on a group project gets shafted onto them whilst their fellow peers sit idly by. It feels unfair to sink hours into your craft, spending all this time fighting to develop your skills and flourish as an artist, only to see someone type half a paragraph and have a machine spit back something that looks not half bad. Let's be honest with ourselves here and say that AI art, at least in a visual regard, has progressed quite a bit to the point where most of the mistakes people find can be dismissed as wonky perspective and the line art being a bit fucky, which is something a ton of artists struggle with too
People develop a sort of a superiority complex over it. I can't blame them honestly. A number of times I've felt it too when people tell me they're using Chat-GPT as though it were Google and when I see my family members and friends playing around with AI art. I gotta bite my tongue and choke back a chortle, both because it's kind of a dick move and also because I don't want to relish in this feeling. It's infectious though to feel as though you have an edge over another person just because you abstain from using Chat-GPT or whatever. Not to be all "grrgrgrr you should LOVE Chat-GPT and if you dare to say anything bad then you are EVILL!!" of course though. It's emotions. They're messy, intense, and oftentimes you don't really realize when you're feeling since you get locked into your perspective. Yet, I think it's important to realize a lot of hatred of this generative AI stems from emotions. Reactionary ideals and claims stem from emotions after all
I think ultimately what the conversation about generative AI should revolve around is about the concerns of labour. The several strikes from a while back from VFX artists and scriptwriters come to mind. They are most at stake from generative AI as tools like Chat-GPT are cheaper and more cost-effective than paying an actual employee for their time and effort. I would also mention the environmental issues, but if we were to talk about that we would also have to acknowledge the fact that so, so much water is being used up daily to generate power for servers. Hell, this post alone will probably contribute to drying up some marsh in the greater scheme of things
Anywho yada yada TL;DR: I agree yes but I also think it's important to recognize that a good chunk of your hatred to Chat-GPT stems from feeling cheated and a sense of pride and superiority over others for simply not using it. There is no quality to Chat-GPT that makes it inherently evil. I can't get upset at my grandma for sending me a photo of her and her dog that went through an AI anime filter. I can feel maybe some exhaustion when seeing a fellow classmate using Chat-GPT to write their essay, but ultimately I write my own work for the love of the game. I can get upset however at those in higher power who use it to push artists out of jobs. Chat-GPT is a tool that has its pros and cons and I think it's reductive to just basically sit there and hiss like a vampire when presented with a cross when faced with the mere word "AI", especially when your only big argument for disliking it is based purely in feeling cheated when someone types a prompt into a program and art that would've taken you seven hours to draw gets spit out in about a minute or two
#sp-rambles#Not to mention there's nuance to be had when discussing students and employees using AI to do menial tasks#I'd rather students use something like Wolramalpha or whatever to do their math homework as Chat-GPT is functionally useless#I've seen it straight-up make up proofs and just do shitty math that SEEMS right on the surface but is meaningless when actually applied#And I also would hope that a student would write the damn essay instead of handing it off to Chat-GPT#As essays (in particular crit lit ones) are designed so you show the capacity to analyze and think about ideas presented to you#But ultimately I think Chat-GPT is seen as a release from these things since let's be real it is pretty agonizing to do homework at times#It's a convenient solution that encourages a person not to participate and learn but to hand off their work onto a tool#It provides respite. It saves one from restless nights and staying awake till the morning churning out a barely comprehensive paper#Once more I do not like generative AI. I don't use Chat-GPT#I think it is only important to see the other side. To comprehend why a person may do things and to recognize your own short-comings#For example I've interacted with a number of international students who have said they use Chat-GPT or other generative AI to help study#because English is their second language and they can't afford to sit there in agony trying to understand something in a unfamiliar languag#Not when their families back home are paying 20 grand a semester to help them get a degree and they also need a to work eight hours to live#There's a nuanced discussion to be had here other than generative AI good or bad#Anyways enough rambling I need to get back to mass reblogging sad white boy and yellow cloak man yaoi and watch YouTubers play video games#ask
