My final Fanfic Writers' Appreciation Day package has been delivered! Ten Prides in Portland by Leiascully and Simple Machines by coffeesuperhero continue the Leverage OT3 theme I've got going on this year. The fic aren't necessarily a series, but are thematically connected, and also the authors are married to each other. (It happens! My wife and I met writing Due South and Hard Core Logo fanfic lo these many years ago!)

There are some similar things I adore about both these fics. I love the sort of playing with structure in both of them, and watching the characters evolve, and also, seeing the queer community in all of its heartfelt messy occasionally infuriating glory. I also adore the thoughtful Eliot character exploration.

First off, Ten Prides in Portland! What it says on the tin. Ten years post-series at a certain brewpub in Portland, as Elliott finds queer community and figures himself out. This book is the reason I now have rainbow ribbon for bookmarks. As you can see, I went so very literal with this one. Homemade book cloth, acrylic paint, and cardstock endpapers printed with a map of Portland.

I had way too much fun with the layout on this one! It was an easy theme to lean into.

Eliot navigates a relationship with two people he loves, runs a restaurant, and figures himself out. I love the character dynamics, the cast of queer characters, and the way the second fic in the series is structured around brewpub menu items. The titles are from the iconic Mary Oliver poem Wild Geese, which is where the bird theme comes from. I used a really lovely fancy liquid mirror silver paint for the geese on the cover, which is gorgeous in person but hard to photograph.

More geese! Some menu formatting! Also, a food-themed illustration at the beginning of each chapter to match the menu item. (Thank you, stock images on The Noun Project.) This was another fun one to play with.

Not pictured here for either book: the insurmountable printer issue I was having where any page with an illustration turned out extra-dark, and the flip side was correspondingly lighter. BUT. I'm still pretty pleased with how they both turned out, happy to have both of these on my shelf, and even happier to send them off in a set together to the authors' hands.

i never properly introduced these mooks to the world, despite always wanting to. look at my white haired men (and yvit too, hi yvit) the main characters of my funny little fan-story called Tungsten Latticework. they have the protagonist curse of Never Being Allowed To Have A Nice Time Ever [read about them under the cut vvv]

being technically the same person, they share a rough upbringing. coming from a reasonably well-respected, but brutally harsh household, they never knew much kindness in life, and turned inward to focus on their studies - the only way they figured they might get the appreciation they desperately lacked. until the zariman incident, that is... they're both extremely intelligent (especially in the field of engineering), and extremely volatile people. bitter and resentful to the core, everything about them is sharp and unfriendly - inward and outward

to the left is 54 (fifty-four), or fif for short. he takes the role of the drifter, duviri's great and terrible outlaw. an eternity of waking up only to die left quite the mark on his psyche, coating his tongue in venom and sparking embers between his teeth. he'd give anything to get out of duviri once and for all, but he's halted by the existence of his counterpart in the origin system: two of the same person can't live in the same plane of existence. no matter how hard he tries, he's stuck in a prison of his own making. it drives him mad he makes quick friends (""friends"") with lodun. you know, the guy who killed him a kjhillion times. it works out as well as one might expect; two stubborn, bullish hotheads with a penchant for violence... but like knows like. "there's one guy in this kingdom who understands me and i fucking hate him". they somehow sort of get along. fif usually does whatever oddjob lodun tasks him with, purely to feel like he's doing something useful with his forever-time. to feel like he belongs

to the right is xenon. he takes the role of the operator, the fierce and fearless tenno. he hates that title. he hates all of it, he hates being a killer. so, after The Sacrifice, he too leaves the tenno faction. he opts to work with the corpus, to invent technologies to hinder his kinsmen. he works under alad v (who else would be insane enough to get a tenno on board), and despite taking a while to adjust, he flourishes in this environment. he finds immense success with his inventions and prototypes. it's killing him. he's never felt more unhappy in his life, but... this is what he wanted, right? he tries to choke the feeling down with praise from his accomplishments, and it almost doesn't fail he's still haunted by his past. not only that, but entities beyond his understanding seek to make his waking and sleeping hours just a little bit worse. the man in the wall torments him - mocks him - in the form of a mangled corpse-twin. from a different angle, a metaphysical copy of him is threatening to take the miserable little life he'd spent so long carving out for himself. xenon is terrified every single day of his life. dude can't catch a break

tucked away beside xenon is his cephalon, yvit. he is a sweetheart. originally an orange octahedron, xenon granted him a humanoid body as part of an experiment. he definitely has very specific feelings about it, but he manages to push them down deep inside. he would never reject a gift from his operator yvit certainly has a lot on his mind, but he's a competent and kind companion to xenon (who takes this love for granted like crazy. if only he allowed himself to be loved...). he particularly enjoys history and record-keeping, being able to recite many codices by heart (though he is a machine, so it's sort of cheating). likes keeping his appearance tidy, especially with his new body

Despite the usual registration issues these were SO much easier & cleaner than any of prev (bar printing aint easy) honestly. Finally mostly got my emulsion coating p consistent! The inks were flowing well! They (mostly) stopped bleeding the whole time! And it all just took most of the year!! god, lol

The image was 1/2 done w a forgiveness towards inaccurate registration in mind, but i still wouldve liked a bit more lining up. I had Z Merrill in mind when i actually bothered to put in reg marks this go, but i think working w the acetate as a reg sheet is an issue - at least w fabric. Not sure how to fix that just yet tho ://

The first time ever, as a species, immortality is in our reach. this simple fact has far-reaching implications. it requires radical rethinking and revision of our genetic imperatives. it also carries chemical weaponry to defend itself from organic attackers.

I have seen so many analysis on why Adam is a lazy villain and not well thought out at all, so here we go bitch- on why that's incorrect. And also my thoughts in general on the character (technically not canon, but we don't have more in depth scenes with Adam aside from him interacting with Sera and literally just death smiling at Lute.)

First and foremost - the man is a vindictive shit. Like what I get is that for episode 1, he was just going to tell Lucifer 'ok see ya next year' at that scheduled meeting. But Lucifer flakes out and sends his cuck child (which slightly irks Adam ofc). But the fact that she then tries to snake (haha joke) oil sell him on this stupid hotel shit is warrant enough for him to be like 'yeah, actuaaaaally... we gonna come back in 6 months now.' Cuz 1, it annoyed him, and 2- the subtle triggering of an old testament character that never got second chances as far as Eden was concerned and is very much in the 'you do to this to me ...I do this back' mindset.

So when Charlie actually goes over his head to Sera and exposes what they've been doing to heaven, that's when 'just coming back early' turns into attacking her hotel. He even shows this behaviour to Vaggie when she runs off to the bathroom instead of sticking around to help shut Charlie down like he'd told her to do- thus his rebuttal is exposing her angel lineage. It's all completely justified in his 'eye for an eye' equation.

Then when Charlie actually fights back that's another infraction and grounds for him lumping her in with all that should be exterminated too, deal or not. Because none of this would have happened at all if she had just 'stayed in her place' and hadn't attended that first meeting, let alone with her redemption plans.

Unfortunately how involved of a villain he is gets overshadowed by the dudebro jokes and memes. Viv actually did say she wished we'd gotten more time with Adam and most likely any hint of his actions and motives were overshadowed and not disclosed for it except the pretty little bow they put on him in the brief look he shares with Lute in the finale.

There's no question that Lute is like a protege to him and his views and values as they're always together/ sidekicks, possibly even lovers depending on how things pan out exposition wise. He's trained her to be about as insufferable and vicious as he is, and I don't think it's a coincidence aside from he just thinks it's funny as fuck to watch her go off on folks with her potential (and definitely exploitable) mental illness. In a sense, he's coaching her to be as insufferable as he is because then she won't ever be able to leave him (most likely his biggest insecurity sticking point) because no one else will tolerate her like he does. She clearly understands the assignment because even Adam gets occasionally rendered speechless by what comes out of her mouth as seen by her overly enthusiastic execution plans.

And lastly! Adam's abandonment issues are interesting in that he would blame everyone for leaving him being the reason why he treat folks as if they already had done that to him. But Lilith most likely leaves him because he tried to command too much of what happened between them/being a stifling, overbearing, and demanding partner. After that happens, he likely backs off a bit and takes a more lax approach with Eve in comparison because he doesn't want the same situation happening. Only it does BECAUSE he was too lax and thus was unable to be the voice of reason to Eve when she was being instructed to eat the apple.

Now because he knows neither approach will keep someone in their place, his final solution comes with how he interacts with Lute- basically convincing her and likely the other exorcists that the rest of heaven outside of the flock will never understand them and the lengths they go to in order to keep the peace in heaven. Because there's no clear way out of an echo chamber and you just keep returning to the source of it at the end of all things said and done.
