Avani. Avani. Avani. Avani.Avani. Avani.
They all chant her name. Inquisitively, out of anger or fear, the tone of her superior scolding her-- praising her for a job well done. Avani. Agent Avani. Help me. Kill them. Fetch this.
Avani. Wear this crown, be the new head agent and face of the BVD. Avani. Replace Adrian. Avani. You're the protector. Avani. You're the killer.
Nestor! But she cries it and it's enough to make her finger stall on the trigger for half a second.
What do you see when you look at me? She wonders.
I know what I see when I look at you. A terror stricken face, hands flexing at the ready to take action but she has no idea what to do. The victim of a cult, caught in the crossfire of bloodshed once more. This child Marie had once helped protect from all the evil the world tried to throw at her now stood bloody - willingly. With amber eyes set ablaze like a wildfire, widened with clarity and focus with every execution she exacted.
You're a cosmic joke of everything I could have been if I didn't go so wrong. The self-awareness is almost painful as her finger pulls the trigger. She doesn't look at the enemy agent, she is only looking at Marie. There's a disconnect almost as she watches her pseudo-aunt flinch backwards in horror as another corpse hit the once stainless floor. Searching... for that emotion that should be there.
But she's tired. Tired of looking for it. Tired of pretending her insides haven't been hollowed out. She works better alone if only because all this negativity drew entities towards her like a beacon. She works better alone because at the drop of a hat she was this thing that stole life with brutal efficiency.
And yet even as she stares in this disconnect she felt no envy for Marie and her emotions - for the tears that formed in her eyes. Yes, the truth of Nestor was that some part of her soul still wanted back that love and safety - to feel like she could be vulnerable again. But in this moment she felt no envy. She felt... too tired to carry such things.
Yes. In this moment she let such desires slip through her fingers like sand.
Behind this doe eyed face was a violence most should hope to never witness. She didn't want to be seen. She never wanted to be perceived like this if it could be avoided. This cruel thing that screamed inside of her day in and day out. Even now, with blood on her hands, it screamed still.
She knew Marie could see it. That horror wasn't just for the violence committed here and now, but because it still was there. In every rise and fall of her chest. To think, Nestor had been all smiles as they had fetched themselves ice cream earlier.
"Sure, Nessie can be a bit weird but she means well." Marie had once said.
Avani. Avani. Avani. Avani.Avani. Avani.
Amber eyes lowered to her hands, to the empty gun in her grasp. Confronted with something new. Something different. Do I... mean well? She had to ask herself now. I don't know... if I mean well.
I don't know... if I want to.
#main protag sits in a neutral zone when it comes to morality#and questions how brutal she needs to be to get the overall job done. which runs parallel to the secondary villain and head of simonia :')#reflecting the person she hates within herself by echoing his own processing and ways without realizing it#she could have turned out similarly to marie but she couldn't see a way to regain living life. there's just the job.#drabbles#when the random thought for a muse hits and then you run off again lmao

I love angry mean girls who are genuinely angry and genuinely mean. It isn't masking softness or upset, it's just cruel outrage.
Mortem is a furious woman. That fury is felt so deeply and only about four people really see it in the entirety of her life.
Her ally, head of the faction (Simonia) that resulted in her exile and traitor conviction. The man who has made the majority of her problems.
Nestor, because the type of dynamic they have affords it by then.
One of the time keepers overseeing the events.
And her own 'patron' fae. Who, honestly, loves to ensure she stays furious. Which she easily does, because he's also part of why she's pissed off.
Mortem's anger isn't hidden away or denied. It lives inside her, constantly burning. But to exist as long as she has, she has to compartmentalize that rage. She has learned various ways of being mean that aren't always so direct.
Which compliments Nestor's other fury. Mortem is unashamedly furious, she just doesn't much care for others to know her goddamn business on that personal of a level often. Whereas with Nestor, despite being the protagonist, is incredibly wrathful and thinks she should feel ashamed of it (even if she doesn't). So she swallows it down to be the polite protector the people need.
Mortem is outwardly warm but inwardly cold. Nestor's politeness appears warm when she's actually rather frigid, but her insides are on fire day in and day out. These mirroring factors are absolutely what contributes to Nestor being able to convince Mortem to give her aid. Because she can talk openly to the fury they both share at the circumstances they find themselves in.
And the way they are mean mirrors one another. Mortem intentionally, Nestor unintentionally. Mortem believes in the potential of people, likes people, likes the idea of people and therefore is honest with them usually. Which means being mean. Whereas Nestor is cynical, she wants to believe in people and so she tries, she doesn't want to engage with people - just do her job of protecting them. Her being mean is unintentional because is comes in the form of disengagement, neglect, false sincerity. Mortem will be sincere when she insults you. Nestor just is too tired to care. Direct, indirect.
I have just been having fun musing over my ladies, lmao.

Nihil sub sole novum
Come dire… son passati quasi mille anni e siam sempre lì…

She's laying on the bed in her hotel room now, her mama asleep in the next bed over. She'd seen a mech (cool!), seen more Grief Seeds than she'd ever expected in one place (utterly terrifying!), and even scored some for herself. But Simonia had brought up some good questions...
What did happen if her Soul Gem was broken, or fully darkened? Why did Kyuubey go looking for magical girls- Was it just to fight Witches, or was there something more to it? And, thinking on it... What did he do with the Grief Seeds they gave him?
She closes her eyes and reaches out telepathically, trying to reach the weasel, but-- No, nothing. "What a pain. He's never around when you need him unless he wants something." Well, maybe she could go looking for him sometime before they went back to Shinjuku, maybe ask around a bit, use those Grief Seeds as bargaining chips... Or she could ask the girls back home when she did return.
Well, that was a few more questions to add to the mystery of her life, alongside the one that she'd been coming back to more and more lately...
What did she wish for, anyway?

Prima parte Seconda parte Terza parte Parte quarta Parte quinta Parte sesta Badia a Passignano di San Michele Arcangelo “Angelo Guerriero” – Barberino Tavarnelle -

Pura Grazia.
.
Dante fa bene a incazzarsi.
