Dinner for Vampires: Life on a Cult TV Show (While also in an Actual Cult by Bethany Joy Lenz
US pub date - 10/22/24
Full disclosure: I’ve never watched a single episode of One Tree Hill.
Regardless of my not previously knowing who the author was, I was immediately pulled into her story. And read over two days with equal parts horror and sadness; it was an eye opening read certainly.
I’ve decided not to rate memoirs any longer, as I don’t feel it’s my place to rate the experience of someone’s life so I will say that this was a compelling read that kept me turning the pages.
In all honesty, I’m probably never going to watch OTH, but I would read more by the author.
I wish Ms Lenz peace and contentment.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for the DRC

This collection of books spans various important and sensitive topics such as racial injustice, juvenile justice, cultural identity, and social advocacy. From the memoir of a Brixton reggae-head to a graphic memoir of a Ukrainian-Nigerian-Canadian hockey player, the books provide diverse perspectives on personal struggles and societal challenges. Each narrative serves as a lens into the complexities of modern society and individual experiences, confronting issues of race, justice, and identity with honesty and depth.

My current print read is my ARC of @ahoffmanwriter #theinvisiblehour. She already had me at the poignant author note that opens the book. The novel is woven around Hawthorne’s #thescarletletter. It’s a fascinating story about the power of words and how readers and writers affect one another. #atriabooks #august2023 #bookstagram #readersofinstagram #simonandschuster https://www.instagram.com/p/CqRG2zHryux/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Adam Silvera - The First to Die at the End - Hardcover @adamsilvera #adamsilvera #theybothdieattheend #collectorsedition @simonandschuster #simonandschuster Simon & Schuster Wie heeft dit boek al gelezen? In NL of Engels? Wat vond je er van? ............ Inhoud: In this prequel to #1 New York Times bestselling phenomenon They Both Die at the End, two new strangers spend a life-changing day together after Death-Cast first makes their fateful calls. It’s the night before Death-Cast goes live, and there’s one question on everyone’s mind: Can Death-Cast actually predict when someone will die, or is it just an elaborate hoax? Orion Pagan has waited years for someone to tell him that he’s going to die. He has a serious heart condition, and he signed up for Death-Cast so he could know what’s coming. Valentino Prince is restarting his life in New York. He has a long and promising future ahead and he only registered for Death-Cast after his twin sister nearly died in a car accident. Orion and Valentino cross paths in Times Square and immediately feel a deep connection. But when the first round of End Day calls goes out, their lives are changed forever—one of them receives a call, and the other doesn’t. Though neither boy is certain how the day will end, they know they want to spend it together…even if that means their goodbye will be heartbreaking. Told with acclaimed author Adam Silvera’s signature bittersweet touch, this story celebrates the lasting impact that people have on each other and proves that life is always worth living to the fullest. ............ #instabook #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #bookstagramnl #bookstagrammers #instaboek #boekstagram #boekenwurm #booktrovert #books #reading #dutchbookstagram #bookmail #boekenpost #lezenisleuk #goldfoilcover #goldfoil #dutchbookstagrammers #dutchbookstagrammer https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpav6gHrl2Y/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

♦️5-STAR REVIEW♦️ The House of Eve by Sadeqa Johnson. Full review at http://www.thechaiseandlounge.com ❤️🩹This story just moved me so much because of the authenticity in the author’s storytelling. The characters and their journey were so compelling that I couldn’t stop reading their tale until the last page. I had to keep reminding myself that this story was set in the 1950-60’s because it was upsetting to be immersed in the plight of women, especially black women and their lack of options in education, love and healthcare options. The story weaves together the lives of a high school student named Ruby and a college student named Eleanor Quarles. While their family situations differ, both women are set upon a path that differed from their own choosing because they fell in love with a man outside their own circle/social class. The consequences are devastating but they eventually rose above like the Phoenix. The author’s ability to elicit emotions while educating the reader in reminds me of the Beverly Jenkins. I learned so much and felt so much at the same time. Can I say Intestinal Fortitude!!!! The characters were so well developed that the reader quickly becomes invested in their journey. I was rooting for these strong black women to achieve their educational goals because I knew that would be the truth vehicle to their upward mobility. I cried for them and cheered for them. At the end, I was so proud of them because they felt like me (if I lived in the 50’s). Thank you Sadeqa Johnson for this story and I am truly hoping to see it as a movie! It deserves to be told in a grand way. Just like the Yellow Wife, this will be one of my top reads of 2023. I LOVE THIS BOOK! #bookreview #thehouseofeve #sadeqajohnson #historicalfiction #blackhistoricalfiction #africanamericanfiction #lovedthisbook #netgalley #simonandschuster https://www.instagram.com/p/CpBPaNzvcHs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Grand rising grammers. It’s the first Sunday in December, so the year is rapidly coming to a close, and that means I will soon be posting my FABULOUS FIVE of 2022. I call them Andre’s Aces. I’ve settled on four and I’m torn on the fifth. Anyhoo, as always, stay tuned to this account. *************************** Let’s get on to SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT! And, listen. Hear me good on this one. Plan your preorders now. This book drops in March and you don’t want to miss it! What did I think you ask?>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I ✍🏾. Just extremely well executed. Drop of history due to her diligent research and a tough look at young women who are seemingly out of options. Is there a way to provide a safety net for these children. After reading The House of Eve, your imagination will awaken and possibilities will abound. Sadeqa Johnson makes the story of Eleanor and Ruby come alive with pitch perfect pacing and effortless prose. It’s a beautifully rendered novel that is extremely easy to fall into and find a rhythm. I don’t want to get into plot points and spoil it for potential readers, just know that as Eleanor and Ruby’s stories unfold in alternating chapters you can feel their lives will intersect and when Ruby is on her way to DC from Philadelphia, the only mystery is how these two women will cross into each other. The way Sadeqa Johnson builds this story and constructs the bridge from Ruby to Eleanor is simply extraordinary. Sadeqa exhibits all the tools of an accomplished novelist and deserves to be mentioned among the best writing today. I urge all who are reading this to mark their calendar for March 7, 2023 and get this book. Thanks to Simon & Schuster and Edelweiss an advanced reading copy. #thehouseofeve #sadequajohnson #simonandschuster #ownvoicesreviews #bookpusher #pushingbooksainteasy #bookblogger #bookreviewer #sundayspotlight #readologist #whodoesitbetter? #blackbibliophile #blackbooksmatter #readmorebooks (at Houston, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/Clv-qTGLD6n/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Men Have Called Her Crazy: A Memoir by Anna Marie Tendler
US pub date - 8/13/24
I was deeply impressed by the self reflection and insight Tendler shared within these page; the honesty that the author has recognized within herself and shared is remarkable and is one of my favorite books of the year so far.
No tawdry details, no tell-all. What this is is a beautifully written memoir which focuses on mental wellness and conveys so many of her experiences that, unfortunately, many people born female can relate to. I’m 50 and recognized myself in situations I was in in my younger years. It really upsets me that these experiences have really begun to seem synonymous with being a young woman - I wish that mental health and wellness were recognized as being equally important to physical health care.
Anna Marie Tendler is a talented creator and one whose future works I’m looking forward to - Men Have Called Her Crazy was a highly compelling read and has my strong recommendation.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for the DRC

𝚀𝙾𝚃𝙳: 𝙷𝚘𝚠 𝚖𝚞𝚌𝚑 𝚝𝚒𝚖𝚎 𝚍𝚘 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚞𝚜𝚞𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚢 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚍 𝚊 𝚍𝚊𝚢?
ℝ𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕘: 𝟛/𝟝 𝕊𝕥𝕒𝕣𝕤
I’m not going to include the synopsis since I feel like I could accidentally go into some spoilers.
✨This hurts to rate a Jennifer Weiner novel 3 stars. I've been a fan since 2008 when I read Certain Girls, which my grandmother bought me that book from a book fair at her work. What she did not know was that she was giving an adult novel to a 13-year-old. Then, I remember my art teacher coming up to me saying she was reading the same book as I, which was very, very awkward. But it was not until my college years that I picked up any book by Jennifer Weiner. I have always loved how Jennifer could suck you in with her writing and very flawed characters. Most of her books have her characters have POVs in the past and present.
✨I've always been a fan of that because I need to know all the juicy details of her characters. But what The Breakaway does is not that. We focus on the present with a few nods to the past. With The Breakaway, I was not drawn to the characters like I usually am with Jennifer's other books.
✨I enjoyed them going around New York biking and coming to different realizations about their lives as well as how to face their future.
✨But I kept getting a few characters here and there mixed up.
✨I felt like there was not many things going on with the characters that intrigued me to draw me into this book. I just thought they were okay and was like cool. I kept waiting for more backstory of the characters and more possible consequences/growth from them too.
✨Like I said: I still enjoyed this book for the most part but really, it's not love or its hate it's just indifference. I do look forward to future works by Jennifer and I think a lot of people will see the appeal of this book.

"You so Black, when you smile, the atars come out... You so Black, when you're born the God comes out." You So Black by Theresa Tha S.O.N.G.B.I.R.D. is food for the soul. It's a celebration of Blackness, it'd history and all its forms. It's a call to action but a call to stillness and adoration at the same time. This book is a love song of pride in Blackness. It's reminder that your Blackness is enough and always will be. This is a gem of a book and should be put in the hands of children so that it will bolster their self esteem and serve as reminder of who they are and who they're meant to be. The illustrations are gorgeous and will make you beam with joy. I am so filled with happiness that I got to participate on this tour and be a part of celebrating such a beautiful story.
