Jazz im Torhaus: Matthias Schubert kommt nach Bad Hersfeld!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Simon Nabatov Quintet - Last Minute Theory (Clean Feed, 2019) ****
Simon Nabatov Quintet – Last Minute Theory (Clean Feed, 2019) ****
[ad_1]
By Stephen Griffith
It doesn’t take a huge leap of faith to assume that fans of this genre of music have mental lists of favorite musicians who’ve never received acclaim commensurate with what they perceive to be their talents. The Russian born pianist Simon Nabatov is at the top of my list. Sure his releases receive positive, often glowing, reviews and I’ve never encountered anyone…

recommended digital releases, september 21st
a large majority of the music i listen to these days is done at work through a premium spotify subscription. the hardest part seems to be trying to remember when an album i’ve been anticipating finally comes out on whatever random friday.
i figure i’m not the only one so every friday i’m aiming to post five new releases from the past week (or so) as well as five recent releases from the past couple months that are available through spotify (and presumably the other streaming platforms).
new releases from the past week (or so):
hazel dickens and alice gerrard "sing me back home- the dc tapes, 1965-1969" on free dirt [spotify, bandcamp] hazel and alice started performing bluegrass together in the sixties when the scene was heavily dominated by men. these home recordings find the duo backing themselves on autoharp, guitar and banjo as they stroll through some favorite songs including carter family favorites, blues numbers and everly brothers tracks.
lonnie holley "mith" on jagjaguwar [spotify, bandcamp] lonnie holley's bluesy songs howl political poetry over bubbling jazz arrangements that recall the improvisation and stream of conscious lyricism of jandek.
noname "room 25" (self-released) [spotify, bandcamp] noname is chicago poet/rapper fatima warner. her second album features more warm but direct raps over jazzy funk production by phoelix. reminds me of a more modern take on the native tongues scene (de la soul, tribe called quest, jungle brothers) of 25-30 years ago.
the shifters "have a cunning plan" on trouble in mind [spotify, bandcamp] after a cassette and trio of 7"s, the shifters drop their proper debut on trouble in mind, recorded by al monfort (of dick diver, terry and more)! it's full of fuzzy, australian indie rock with occasional nods to post-punk and existential angst. i could have repeated last week's "five new australian releases" section but we'll try to ration them out a little in the name of variety.
fred thomas "aftering" on polyvinyl [spotify, bandcamp] fred thomas' latest album embraces his yin/yang by featuring both grubby pop songs (mostly at the start) and warm drone soliloquys (mostly at the end).
slightly older stuff:
akira sakata, simon nabatov, takashi seo and darren moore "not seeing is a flower" on leo [spotify] recording of live set from this quartet with akira sakata's sax and simon nabatov's piano leading the charge. don't miss sakata setting his instruments down to sings on 'ritual'.
beach bunny "prom queen ep" (self-released) [spotify, bandcamp] i came across beach bunny on an indie-pop spotify playlist by chris smith. they're from chicago and play jangly, emo indie pop.
shannon mcardle "a touch of class" on shandelion [spotify] third solo album (and probably my favorite) from ex-mendoza line member who has a melancholy paul westerberg vibe going. her lyrics always do a great job of consider all three sides of a relationship- what you think, what they think and what everyone else thinks.
the sunbathers "a weekend away with the sunbathers" on jigsaw [spotify, bandcamp] english, acoustic twee duo that have a little bit of a "field mice playing live at your local coffeehouse vibe" going.
szun waves "new hymn to freedom" on leaf [spotify, bandcamp] szun waves blend instrumental psych with jazz for fans of the blissed-out post-rock of the album leaf and the drift.

GERMANY: Jilman Zilman, Simon Nabatov ‎– The Loft Recording(GLM 2018)
Tilman Herpichböhm describes his new record “The Loft Recordings”. The album was named after the recording location, the Loft in Cologne. The not quite ordinary line-up consisting of drums (Tilman Herpichböhm), piano, Fender Rhodes, synthesizer (Simon Nabatov), alto saxophone (Julian Bossert), alto saxophone (Johannes Ludwig) and double bass (Peter Christof) is appearing especially good in this unfolding free space. There, the alto saxophones can meet sonically, in order to completely alienate themselves again in the next moment – they are the figurehead of the band. Simon Nabatov is new to the crew, after joint concerts Tilman Herpichböhm wrote the pieces especially for him, making him part of Jilman Zilman. He brings a breath of fresh air to the band – together new and playful compositional and improvisational possibilities are explored. .GLM

Niklaus Troxler Swiss Graphic Designer. Top right:  Jazz in Willisau, 1995 Top left:  Jazz in Willisau, 2009 Bottom left: Pierre Favre percussion solo, 2012 Bottom middle:  New year boesch, 2005 Bottom right:  Simon Nabatov solo, 2003
Many of the posters he creates are based around music/ music festivals, especially the Jazz festival in Willisau which he has created a variety of work for.  Many Swiss designers I have looked at previously have much more simplistic compositions compared to these. They are quite hectic and have a range of geometric shapes overlapping and going in different directions. It’s almost like they capture the music within them. Jazz music isn’t plain and boring, therefor the designs shouldn’t be either.
