spooky tuesday is a (now not so new!) podcast where we’re breaking down all of our favorite slashers, thrillers, monster movies and black comedies on the new scariest day of the week.

it's the third film in a hot horror franchise AND it makes the hop to hollywood, so the comparisons between maXXXine (2024) and scream 3 were inevitable — but are they a compliment or a criticism? in our latest episode of spooky tuesday, we're covering the newest (but perhaps not final) movie in ti west's spooky saga starring mia goth. a direct sequel to 2022's x but coming on the heels of prequel pearl, this flick has a tough job striking the right tone and trying to stand alone, but one thing we can say for it is that the accent work definitely makes it stand out.

SO.....

I just finished watching Daisy Jones & The Six and noticed similarities to 8th house synastry that I wanted to share to Astrotumblr. I recognized even in 8th house synastry that I've had with friends, family, and unrequited loves can be an intense transformative repeating cycle , if you're unable to acknowledge where all parties stand in a relationship. So, Very Plutonian.

*I just found out the series is based on a book by Taylor Jenkins Reid and now I'm curious to know, if there were any major changes made to the series vs the book.

Anyways,

8th house themes to me:

Transformation, Inheritance, Death, Rebirth, taxes, married couples, intimacy, Unspoken, mirrors, truth, subconscious & conscious, base comforts, gifts, reciprocity, true value, war, Scorpio, magnets, our obsessions, Mars, vulnerabilities, armor and weapons used to defend, The Aftermath or conclusion to a legal battle/divorce/separation.

How do these themes tie into Daisy Jones & The Six:

I think Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne represent a plutonian/8th house couple that recognize their mirroring selves and are constantly pulled towards another like magnets, but unable to fullfill their romantic desires because of their vices and life commitments.

Billy married Camilla his teen sweetheart.

He cheats on Camilla and has an alcohol addiction.( his alcohol addiction stems from failure in life, music career, to being a new father, and his absent father in childhood, who so happened to be a deadbeat drunk)🤔🙃

His ego and pride prevent him and rest of the band from reaching their highest potential because the fear of his shadow. ( Chiron in Leo, Chiron in 2nd, Chiron 3rd, Apollo placements)

Daisy comes from an emotionally neglectful household and resentful mother, which also inspires her to write her music and join The Six( Moon in 8th, Cancer in 8th, Moon, Gemini in 8th, Mercury in 12th house).

Daisy strikes it out on her own, meets Simone Jackson, Teddy Price, and eventually The Six.

Daisy and Billy are attracted to each other because they can relate to addiction, the need to fill their emptiness with substance abuse, and acknowledge their vulnerability with each other. They feel whole when they're together, but this isn't enough to keep them from destroying themselves and the band.

"1121" by Halsey is so Ghostsoap-coded in all its angsty glory. Like, "Bells in Santa Fe" & "Ya'aburnee" also give the vibe for these two as well, but "1121" really hits that desperation, that devotion, that despair.

The lyrics just scream of Ghost's love for Soap; how the Brit has never felt such feelings so strongly for anyone before until he fell for the Scot; how the Lieutenant is unwilling to accept the idea of ever losing his Sergeant; how Simon is willing to give Johnny his heart, the most fragile part of his very being, and how he'd break it himself to show how much he loves him.

The fact that song title is the numerical date for November 21st, and the final mission of MWIII, "Trojan Horse", takes place on November 21st is just sheer coincidence...

MWIII SPOILERS UNDER BREAK IF YOU STILL DON'T KNOW YET. NO SHAME IN THAT, BUT I DO ENVY YOU GUYS FOR NOT KNOWING

...and don't get me started on the lyric "Took one in the temple", because guess what happened to Soap!

"1121" may be about Halsey's love for her child, her surprise of being pregnant, and her fear of another miscarriage following many others. But for Ghost, it's his love for Soap ensnaring his very soul, fearing the inevitable day he'd lose him... and the despair of experiencing it on November 21st, his broken pieces barely held together by the rest of 141, a burning hatred growing within, compeling him to hunt down Makarov, even if it kills him & potentially sends Ghost to wherever Soap went next if he's lucky, or if Simon wonders if he even deserves to after everything he's done in his life...

...or, if you're more inclined to tell Activision to go fuck themselves, it could be Ghost holding a silent vigil in a dark hospital room, accompanied by the beeping sounds of medical machinery keeping his Scottish spitfire of a soulmate alive, his body battered & bruised, his sunshine dimmed, but still alive if barely by a sheer miracle, praying for the day his Sergeant wakes up sooner than theorized before he loses his mind...

...or maybe it's Simon, in the early morning hours, tracing his fingers across the scar on Johnny's head as they lay in the Lieutenant's bed. Simon, how needs the light breathes against his chest to remind him that Johnny still lives, that what happened in that tunnel was a nightmare they both woke up from. Simon, who reevaluates just how deeply in love he is, that he's even deeper than he thought, that he may have deeper to go still. Simon, who watches Johnny open his eyes slowly once more, another reminder of life still clinging to the Scot's flesh & bones, greeting him with his Scottish accent that he wants to hear forevermore until a more dignified end claims them both. Simon, who will soon get up after Johnny convinces him to stay in bed for longer, who gets dressed in his iconic dark garb & skull mask, who helps the rest of the 141 hunt down Makarov so he can put a bullet in the man's head for even thinking about killing his boyfriend. Simon, who returns to the same bed once the moon is high, finding bliss within two warm arms & a sun-tinged voice that reminds him of everything he's worth & more.

Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) está intentando abrirse camino como actriz seria en la industria, pero lo cierto es que el haber participado y estar participando en cine para adultos la condicionan para que las productoras la entiendan como una actriz seria. Por ello se refugia en el videoclub de su amigo Leon (Moses Sumney) que está debajo de su casa y con el que comparte mucho tiempo. También le insiste a su agente Teddy Knight (Giancarlo Esposito) para que le busque trabajos serios.

Maxine va a una audición para la película de terror La Puritana II, donde prodría compartir pantalla con la famosa Molly Bennett (Lily Collins), la directora de casting es Elizabeth Bender (Elizabeth Debicki) que decide apostar por ella y darle el papel.

Mientras Maxine sigue con su vida, viendo a sus amigas, Tabby Martin (Halsey) y Amber (Chloe Farnworth) que le ofrecen ir a una fiesta por la zona de las letras de Hollywood. Maxine no va, pero espera que sus amigas lo pasen bien.

Durante todo este tiempo vemos que por la tele se presentan los asesinatos del rondador nocturno, que están atemorizando a la ciudad. El asesino marca con pentagramas el cuerpo de sus víctimas y los torturas y así acaban encontrando a Tabby y Amber.

Por eso van a hablar con ella los detectives Williams (Michelle Monaghan) y Torres (Bobby Cannavale), afecta a Maxine, pero no lo suficiente, hasta que esa misma noche asesinan a Leon, y el asesino es el rondador nocturno.

Cuando va a la grabación para hacer su parte, Molly le dice que va a ir a una fiesta por la zona donde le dijeron Amber y Tabby y decide hacer algo.

Previamente, un detective privado, John Labat (Kevin Bacon), le da la dirección de una fiesta por esa zona donde, si no va, sacarán a la luz su pasado, todo lo ocurrido en las anteriores películas. Cansada de que la persiga y la amenaza, le da una paliza a Labat, y le pide ayuda a su manager Teddy contándole lo que este le hace.

Teddy, Maxine y otro amigo caza a Labat y lo encierran dentro de un coche en un desguace para hacerlo picadillo y que deje de amenazar a Maxine. Así lo hacen, lo aplastan y se quitan el problema para siempre.

Por eso y cansada de todo se cuela en la mansión de las fiestas, lo que no sabe es que los detectives la siguen de cerca.

Maxine se cuela y va hasta el final de la habitación donde sabemos que está el rondador nocturno que no es otro que el padre de Maxine, que está viendo videos de ella de pequeña cuando ya soñaba con ser una gran estrella. Su padre es el asesino (Simon Prast).

Huyendo de su descubrimiento y perseguida por su padre, tropieza con unas maletas que se abren y resultan ser el cadáver de su compañera Molly desmembrado. Ante el shock y la caída, Maxine pierde el conocimiento.

La joven se despierta atada a una palmera en medio de una piscina, y alrededor de ella hay un equipo de grabación liderado por su padre que va vestido de sacerdote, cuando las cámaras empieza a grabar adelanta que va a practicarle un exorcismo, como al resto de sus víctimas, para sacarle el demonio de dentro y que deje de actuar como "una zorra".

Maxine acorralada, no sabe como salir, pero los detectives comienzan a disparar, primero a su padre, y luego al resto de personas de la secta que van armadas. Se cubren como pueden y le piden a Maxine que se refugie. Se suelta gracias a una navaja que llevaba en el bolsillo, y sale en busca de su padre.

Este huye despavorido seguido por los detectives, pero rápidamente descubre que ambos han sido heridos mortalmente, y que su padre está tendido en medio del letrero de Hollywood herido en el suelo. Maxine coge una recortada y le apunta, pero justo aparece el helicóptero de la policía pidiéndole que suelte el arma.

Paralelamente, vemos el estreno de la película protagonizada por Maxine, la rodean los periodistas y los fans y todo el mundo la ama.

Mientras apunta a su padre con la recortada, le pide que repita con ella lo que decían cuando era pequeña "no voy a aceptar una vida que no merezco". Y a la vez que lo dice con su padre lo dice en el futuro en una entrevista del estreno. Después le vuela la cabeza a su padre. Demostrando que está dispuesta a todo por su sueño.

I Want to Live!

With its near-documentary depiction of the workings of the gas chamber and clear anti-capital punishment stance, Robert Wise’s I WANT TO LIVE! (1958, TCM) was quite the shocker in its time. Even knowing the film’s outcome, the final act dealing with the appeals and denials in the case of convicted killer Barbara Graham (Susan Hayward) are almost unbearably suspenseful. Yet from a contemporary view the picture also has a strong sentimental strain simply in the way the filmmakers bend over backwards to make Graham appear innocent, the victim of yellow journalism, lying confederates and her own bad choices. There’s also an interesting feminist angle in that the toughness the press exploits to tar her image during the trial is later explained as the product of her rough childhood. Strength in a woman is an aberration, yet it’s one of Hayward’s most appealing characteristics. My favorite moments are the times she sasses people who think they’re trying to help her.

The film starts with Hayward as a part-time prostitute and full-time party girl who hangs with some shady characters, including two who ask for an alibi that leads to her doing time for perjury. After her ,marriage to a drug addict goes bad, she’s back with her criminal cohorts, which leads to her being arrested with them for the murder of an elderly woman. With her criminal record and an ill-advised attempt to buy an alibi, her conviction is a given, as is the death penalty. That starts a harrowing chain of events as Hayward’s lawyer (Joe De Santis), a sympathetic psychiatrist (Theodore Bikel) and the reporter (Simon Oakland) who had originally helped smear her fight to get her conviction overturned.

The film’s opening feels somewhat choppy and contrived. When Hayward informs her criminal colleagues she’s going straight and getting married, one is building a house of cards that he knocks down as soon as she leaves. Wise then cuts to a fierce argument between Hayward and her husband (Wesley Lau) as their baby screams non-stop. In these scenes, Hayward seems to be rehashing the “tough broad with a heart of gold” persona she had developed in movies like DEADLINE AT DAWN (1946) and THE LUSTY MEN (1952). At one point she even takes the fall for a married man who’d paid her for sex just because she likes a picture of his family. Once she’s charged with murder, however, the film takes flight. Where Hayward had earlier been playing movie star realism (her hair gets slightly disheveled, but she always has perfect makeup), she starts digging deep and offers a fiercely committed portrait of a desperate woman. And it’s not all snarling. When a friend from her party-girl days comes to visit and offer support, the scene is a wonder of subtle reactions to the only person showing her kindness at that point. The supporting actors have the wisdom to play for subtlety without making Hayward look out of place, and Oakland is particularly fine. Johnny Mandel wrote the jazz score, making generous use of Gerry Mulligan’s combo. If you’re good you’ll spot small roles played by John Marley, Raymond Bailey, Dabbs Greer, Stafford Repp, Gavin MacLeod, Peter Breck, Brett Halsey, Hope Summers and Jack Weston.
