The Top 5 WORST Music Venues to Travel to (in the NYC/Tri-State area)
Disclaimer: This is my personal experience since I started going to local and big shows nearly 11 years ago. This is also focused in the tri-state area surrounding New York City.
Welcome to the first edition of The Top 5 Worst Music Venues to travel to in NYC/Tri-state area. This is *MY* personal list, so please comment/email me any other ones you’ve visited if you haven’t been to any of these. The first two are basically scraping the bottom of the barrel. I’m sure I have better stories, but this is what I was able to think of at the top of my head.
#5 – Revolution Bar and Music Hall – Amityville, Long Island (Permanently Closed)
From seeing acts like Symfinity and EXM to big names like Doro and Gemini Syndrome, it was always a good time to visit this venue. The walk sucked at night though. I’m from the city, and it was too quiet for my tastes. Formerly located at 140 Merrick Rd in Amityville, it was about an hour and a half taking public transportation to this venue. It’s last on the list because I did manage to go here a bunch of times, so I was used to the trek.
#4 – Ram’s American Pub – Holbrook, Long Island (Permanently Closed)
Sad to hear this place closed (presumably because of the pandemic), but I managed to visit here once, to see my friends Bending Over Backwards play. Formerly located at 236 Union Ave in Holbrook (and getting off at Ronkonkoma LIRR Station), it’s genuinely not that bad to get to. Still, it’s nearly a two hour public transportation ride, and then walking on the edge of the non-existent sidewalk (thanks Suffolk County!), before reaching the bar. It wasn’t that bad of a walk, like I mentioned, but it’s a bit annoying when all that construction at the time, surrounding the station and road, made it longer than it needed to be. Since it’s closed now, I can’t return to give you a better score sadly 😦
#3 – The Paramount – Huntington, Long Island
I’ve seen my favorite bands play here: The Dead Deads, Silversun Pickups… It’s a great venue and one that I wish I wouldn’t have hated its location. Why the hell is it a 30+ minute walk from Huntington Station to the ACTUAL town of Huntington? Why is the central area of the location, FAR from public transportation?!?!?! The amount of times I dragged my feet through New York Ave (symbolically ironic?)… I got fed up with it from the first time I ever went to this venue. It’s already about an hour to get to the place, and now I have to waste MORE time getting to the actual venue? What a tragedy. Just move the f**king town SOUTH!!!! Be like Westbury and The Space at Westbury!!!!! Located at 370 New York Ave in Huntington.
Tumblr media
#2 – The Chance Theater – Poughkeepsie, New York (Permanently Closed)
This one and The Paramount were a close second, but I opted to put this higher because it’s outside of the New York City area. If I’m stranded in Long Island, I know the train systems enough to get back home, or I have friends out here. Poughkeepsie and anywhere equivalent is No-Man’s Land. It’s a 2 hour Metro-North train ride, with walking through the city streets, passing through abandoned buildings just to get to the venue. If that wasn’t scary enough, I never attempted heading home back the same way – I was lucky enough to be driven back, or at least dropped off way closer to a southern station that seemed more human. It sucks that the Chance closed. I got to see Proxima Control, EXM, and a bunch of other local bands that don’t exist or I haven’t heard from in a while. I was lucky enough to fill in for bass at the Loft area of the venue! Now that it’s closed, I see no reason to ever visit Poughkeepsie ever again sadly. Located at 6 Crannell St in Poughkeepsie.
#1 – Northwell at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh, Long Island
The year was 2017. I wanted to see Silversun Pickups at Jones Beach, so I took the LIRR to Freeport, and attempted to catch a bus, which apparently wasn’t running. I split a cab with a guy and two ladies (the guy ended up dancing with the band during the set), and arrived to the venue. I enjoyed my show and didn’t want to stay for the headliner, Third Eye Blind. I walked across the parking lot, under a DESOLATE tunnel, and closer to the beach, where the bus stop was. I waited 2 hours. The police was nearby and came to me asking what was I waiting for. There was no bus they said. I walked BACK to the venue. Everyone had just gotten out of the show, and I had to split a taxi with EXTREMELY drunk obnoxious girls (who made fun of the cab driver for being south Asian, by the way). All in all, regardless of that experience of good and bad — Jones Beach is BY FAR, the WORST venue to get to. It’s MANDATORY to drive, unless you can magically catch the bus that apparently doesn’t run after 5pm or so. If you take public transportation like I do, you have to pay for a taxi, to and from. Lyft and Uber services didn’t work for me that year because it was “illegal” to serve Nassau and Suffolk counties (maybe they do now but I remember hearing that was the reason why 5 drivers skipped me), but I refuse to see any show at the venue if I don’t have a car ride. I wasted more money traveling to and from the show, than an actual f**king TICKET to the show. My solution? A dedicated bus/tram that drives from the two nearby LIRR stations and you pay the equivalent of a LIRR fare (the distance I mean). Because that distance from the LIRR train to the venue is IMPOSSIBLE to walk. Like, literally, there’s no sidewalks, only highway and marshes. Located at 895 Bay Pkwy in Wantagh, Long Island.
And so, to conclude…
What are your worst venues to travel to? While writing this, I just thought of another few, but I’ll save that for another edition 🙂

Silversun Pickups Announce 30-Date “Summer Gods” Amphitheater Tour with Third Eye Blind; Coming to Starplex Pavilion in Dallas on July 15th
youtube
Silversun Pickups will embark on a 30-date amphitheater tour opening for Third Eye Blind. The “Summer Gods” Tour celebrates Third Eye Blind’s 20th anniversary, and kicks off on Friday, June 9 in Miami, FL with stops including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, and New Orleans. Dates below and tickets will go ON SALE on Wednesday, January 25th. The GRAMMY Museum® will also welcome Silversun Pickups for their latest iteration of “Homegrown,” a series that features prominent California-based musicians performing in their intimate 200-seat Clive Davis Theater on January 25th, at 8PM PST. The night, which has sold out, will include an acoustic performance and intimate conversation with Silversun Pickups about the band’s career and their latest release, Better Nature, moderated by Scott Goldman, Vice President of the GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares.
Silversun Pickups will be playing their first ever South American shows in the Spring of 2017. The band has confirmed dates including Brazil, Argentina, and Chile’s editions of Lollapalooza, Colombia’s Estereo Picnic Fest, the country’s biggest rock and alternative music festival, as well as a performance at Brazil’s famed Circo Voador with Cage The Elephant. Silversun Pickups released their much-anticipated fourth studio album, Better Nature, on September 25th, 2015 via the band’s own New Machine Recordings. Produced by Jacknife Lee (U2, Two Door Cinema Club, Crystal Castles) and mixed by GRAMMY winner Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine, Nine Inch Nails, Royal Blood), Better Nature is a revelatory manifestation of a band entirely in touch with the muse and each other. Hailed for their inimitable merging of ethereal melodies and pure sonic force, Silversun Pickups are among the most dynamic and creative rock bands of the modern era. From the indie rock opening salvo of 2005's Pikul EP to 2012's far-reaching Neck of the Woods, each successive release has seen the Silver Lake-based band boldly venture into uncharted terrain, bravely pushing their imagination and ability toward new and surprising summits. Their 2009 album Swoon featured the Billboard Hot 100 hit "Panic Switch" and earned the group a nomination for Best New Artist at the GRAMMYs that year. Better Nature marks the debut release from Silversun Pickups' own New Machine Recordings. The label — which takes its name from the Pikul favorite, "…All The Go Inbetweens" — allows the ever-autonomous band to fully determine its own course without any interference. Silversun Pickups premiered their video for “Latchkey Kids,” on September 29, during their Reddit AMA. The video, directed by Maryam L'Ange, explores the realities and challenges of adolescence through the eyes of a teenager, played by Julian Rapaport, and you can watch it here: http://bit.ly/2gEMBwR Silversun Pickups also performed at Chicago’s Grant Park for 2016’s Lollapalooza Festival, and you can watch their stirring performance of "Panic Switch," off 2009’s Swoon, which garnered the band a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, HERE. Top 5 songs excluding tswift because this is 100% me looking for new things to listen to
It’s cute that you think the rest of my music taste isn’t just...basically trash mixed with Broadway showtunes. So, here are some non TS songs that I enjoy, but are probably not going to help you in your quest to find new music to listen to:
1. The entire Six the Musical Soundtrack, but specifically the last song, Six. But also, like, every single song on the album.
2. Hold Me Down, New Americana, and Strange Love from Halsey’s Badlands album
3. Jet Pack Blues and Immortals by Fall Out Boy from American Beauty/American Psycho and Save Rock and Roll by FOB from the Save Rock and Roll album
4. The Pit by Silversun Pickups, which is just one of those songs that I can have on repeat...forever.
5. The entire Hamilton Broadway Cast album, which after seeing Hamilton in 2017, I listened to it every day for like, two years.
Ask me my top-5 anything

The Best New Artists of the 2010s (According to the Grammys)
Tumblr media
It is official; the 2010s are coming to an end. As we look into 2020, the Grammys have unveiled their final “Best New Artist” list of the decade. Without a doubt everyone’s definitive list for who is going to have a lasting and successful career in music, the 2020 list of nominations feature some fan-favorites, interesting surprises, and odd snubs (we’re looking at you complete absence of a single BTS nomination in any of the 84 categories).
READ: 2020 Grammys Predictions: Who Is the Next “Best New Artist?”
With Billie Eilish, Lizzo, Maggie Rogers, Lil Nas X, ROSALÍA, Black Pumas, Tank and The Bangas, and Yola all finding themselves nominated for “Best New Artist” this year, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on some of the past winners. And after going back through a decade of winners and losers, it is safe to say “Best New Artist” may just be the wildest and most contentious Grammy category out there.
2010 - Zac Brown Band
youtube
2010 was a much simpler year. The Zac Brown Band had a hit on their hands, featuring none other than Margarita-loving and island-life-living Jimmy Buffet. The result would be a Grammy win for “Best New Artist,” beating out the likes of MGMT, Silversun Pickups, The Ting Tings, Keri Hilson. Not the best year for indie pop, but a great year for anyone who loves enjoying some fried chicken and beer to the sounds of the Zac Brown Band.
2011 - Esperanza Spalding
youtube
2011 may have been the biggest commercial upset to date. With some of today’s biggest pop and rock bands earning nominations–we’re talking Drake, Justin Bieber, Florence and the Machine, Mumford & Sons–the win would be a whole lot less pop and a whole lot more contemporary jazz. Acclaimed bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding would take home the illustrious award, proving that jazz was still alive and kicking, at least as of 2011.
2012 - Bon Iver
youtube
2012 marked a high point for EDM. Festival culture was ramping up and Skrillex had cemented himself as one the genre’s greatest innovators. Yet, 2012 saw the Grammys taking a step back and basking in the somber reflections of Bon Iver’s For Emma, Forever Ago. Taking home the Grammy over not just Skrillex but J. Cole, The Band Perry, and Nicki Minaj, 2012 was Bon Iver’s year and the year the Internet collectively asked, “Who is Bonnie Bear?”
2013 - fun.
youtube
If the crowd that boo’d Drake off stage at this year’s Camp Flog Gnaw were at the 2013 Grammys, there would be a veritable riot. With the majority of nominations leaning more in the country and folk tradition, fun. would beat out the likes of The Lumineers, Alabama Shakes, and Hunter Hayes. Yet, the true upset would lie in the indie pop-rock band taking home the award over R&B purveyor Frank Ocean.
2014 - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
youtube
2014 was an amazing year for music as a whole but hip-hop in particular. Yes, we had nominations for country-pop superstar in the making Kacey Musgraves, the only man who can turn down a check from Drake, James Blake, and one of the to-be biggest artists on the planet, Ed Sheeran, but the award would deservingly go to one of the best rappers of the decade, Kendrick Lamar. Just kidding. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis beat out Kendrick Lamar, taking home the award much to hip-hop’s collective dismay.
2015 - Sam Smith
youtube
2015 dodged a bullet in not giving the award to Iggy Azalea, whose list of feuds over the decade is enough to constitute both a standalone Billboard and Cosmopolitan article. Instead, the 2015 Grammys played it smart and safe by giving the honor to Sam Smith, who took home the honor over Bastille, Brandy Clark, HAIM, and the aforementioned Azalea.
2016 - Meghan Trainor
youtube
Not much to say here. Meghan Trainor took home the award over Courtney Barnett, James Bay, Sam Hunt, and Tori Kelly in a year where pop sounded a whole lot like country at times.
2017 - Chance the Rapper
youtube
2017 will always be my go-to-year for explaining why I will never quite understand the Grammys’ “Best New Artist” category. And no, it’s not because The Chainsmokers earned a nomination. Chance the Rapper took home the award, beating out Anderson .Paak, Maren Morris, and Keslea Ballerini, in spite of having released numerous mixtapes in the previous five years. The Grammys really knocked down my door in 2017 to ask if I had heard of this Chance the Rapper guy.
2018 - Alessia Cara
youtube
In a contentious year where pop-R&B reigned supreme, we saw some of our favorites pitted against one another. Khalid versus SZA. Julia Michaels versus Alessia Cara. Lil Uzi Vert just being Lil Uzi Vert. The award for “Best New Artist” would ultimately go to Canadian pop-R&B singer and songwriter Alessia Cara.
2019 - Dua Lipa
youtube
2019 marked a major change-up. Finding themselves as indecisive on me on any given day, the Grammys upped their number of “Best New Artist” nominations from five to eight. Making even more room for speculation, but not straying too far from the world’s ongoing obsession with pop-R&B, Chloe x Halle, H.E.R., Bebe Rexha, Jorja Smith, and Dua Lipa all received nominations, as well as Margo Price, Luke Combs, and Greta Van Fleet who all made a good case for country and rock. However, it was Dua Lipa who would ultimately take home the award, because, really, was there any other pop queen in 2019 quite like Dua?

BLIS. PREMIERE NEW SONG “BAD WEATHER” & ANNOUNCE FALL TOUR DATES
See them on tour along the east coast en route to The Fest in Gainesville this October.
Tumblr media
“Blis. will set off a blaze” - KEXP
“uplifting, sorrowful, and utterly riveting” - Consequence of Sound
Atlanta, GA’s Blis. released their critically acclaimed debut full-length No One Loves You (Sargent House) in October of 2017.  Almost two years later, Blis. have unveiled their first piece of new music since; their new single “Bad Weather” premieres in advance of their Fall 2019 tour, which takes them down the east coast and into Florida for their highly anticipated set at Gainesville, FL’s FEST.
The "Bad Weather" video, shot by Matt Foster and edited by Zak Washburn, is both eye and ear candy.  The sweeping, colorful visuals paired with the band's dreamy soundscapes defy categorizaion and blur the boundaries of emo, shoegaze, and post-hardcore.
Watch and share the excellent new music video for “Bad Weather” now on YouTube.
Blis. have spent the last two years touring on No One Loves You and their most recent run finished up earlier this month.  The album continues to receive praise; it’s an album of a band that’s lived a lot of life, exploring sonic realms that on the surface, should not go together, but manage to find cohesion. The record mosaics their influences—the intricate rock riffs of American Football, Pedro the Lion’s midtempo balladry gone awry with crucial aggression, indie rock sensibility that has mainstream press publications referencing Modest Mouse and Silversun Pickups. It was their 2015 Starting Fires in My Parents House EP that inspired Sargent House Records to sign them, a cathartic, unexpected release that garnered press from top-tier places like Pitchfork, Stereogum and Consequence of Sound. It’s easy to see that something’s in the water—and Blis. have come to prove that it’s not just hype. Far from it.
See Blis. on tour this October with Weakened Friends on select shows, and stay tuned for more news from the band soon.  "Bad Weather" is available for streaming + download here.
