An Islamic chaplain at Toronto’s main pediatric hospital was under scrutiny on Thursday after video emerged of him encouraging parents to show their children a clip of the founder of Hamas predicting the eventual destruction of the State of Israel.
The video clip — unearthed by the Washington, DC-based Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) — showed imam Ayman Taher praising remarks made by the late Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, the founder of Hamas, in a 1998 interview with the Qatari-owned broadcaster Al Jazeera.
“If you did not watch this, Google it and watch it, let your children watch it, because this is history that needs to be absorbed,” Taher — who serves as the Islamic chaplain of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and as imam of the Ibrahim Jame Mosque in Hamilton, Ontario — stated during a Dec. 18 speech at Palestine House in Toronto, the headquarters of a nonprofit organization that caters to the Palestinian community in Canada.
“When [Al Jazeera correspondent] Ahmed Mansour was asking Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, he said to him: ‘Sheikh…’ And the sheikh was barely out of Israeli jails, by the way. He said to him: ‘Do you believe that Israel will [be] finished?’ He [Yassin] said to him with confidence: ‘Yes.’ He [Mansour] said to him: ‘When do you think it will [be] finished?’ He [Yassin] said: ‘2027.’ And I said to myself: ‘How calm, how confident this man is.'”
Taher went on to eulogize Yassin, a wheelchair-bound cleric whom Israel held responsible for the deaths of several Israeli citizens and who was killed in a March 2004 Israeli strike on Gaza City.
“Sheikh Ahmed Yassin was handicapped,” Taher said. “The only thing that moved in him was his tongue. Allah gave him that faith to speak his mind and inspire the generations to come. In the most difficult time, when his own life was not safe, and we know how Allah has honored him.”
He said that when Yassin was in jail and after that when he was living in very difficult times, he never had doubt that Allah is going to give victory to his religion, we [also] should not, because he has inspired millions.”
He then added: “I know I am getting myself in trouble now for speaking on social media. Who cares, because if [we] do not get ourselves into trouble, we will not be getting victory.”
A spokesperson for the Hospital for Sick Children said in a statement shared with The Algemeiner that Taher had been placed on paid leave as a result of the video.
“Concerns about comments made by a member of the Spiritual and Religious Care Department at SickKids related to the war in Israel and Gaza and shared on social media have been brought to our attention,” the statement noted. “We of course take this extremely seriously and are investigating as per SickKids’ Code of Conduct. The individual is on a paid leave while we investigate. For confidentiality reasons we are unable to share any additional information.”
The hospital added that “all who come to SickKids are entitled to be treated with respect, professionalism and feel safe.”
Reacting to the announcement of an investigation into Taher, one X/Twitter user responded indignantly, “What is there to investigate? It’s right there in black and white. SickKids that should have acted before now. Repugnant.”

Day 3: Boris Karloff
This version is from 1950. For this version of Peter Pan, Barrie is long gone (He dies in 1937) but now the hospital has the rights to the play/book.
More notes in Keep Reading.
Peter Pan (1950), music and lyrics by Leonard Bernstein, an authorized Broadway adaptation. Intended as a musical, it was eventually staged as a "straight" dramatic version with only five songs. This version starred Jean Arthur as Peter Pan and Boris Karloff in the dual roles of Mr. Darling and Captain Hook.
Quote from the hospital's wiki:
Peter Pan
In April 1929 J.M. Barrie gave the copyright to his Peter Pan works to the hospital, with the request that the income from this source not be disclosed. This gave the institution control of the rights to these works and entitled it to royalties from any performance or publication of the play and derivative works. Innumerable performances of the play and its various adaptations have been staged, several theatrical and television adaptations have also been produced, and numerous editions of the novel have been published, all under licence from the hospital. The hospital's trustees further commissioned a sequel novel, Peter Pan in Scarlet, written by Geraldine McCaughrean and published in 2006. After the copyright first expired in the UK at the end of 1987 – 50 years after Barrie's death – the UK government's Copyright, Designs and Patents Act of 1988 granted the hospital a perpetual right to collect royalties for public performances and commercial publication of the work within the UK. This did not grant GOSH full copyright control over the work, however. When UK copyright terms were later extended to the author's life plus 70 years by a European Union directive in 1996, GOSH revived its full copyright claim on the work. After the copyright expired again in 2007, the terms of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act again applied. At various times, GOSH has been in legal disputes in the United States, where the copyright term is based on the date of publication, putting the 1911 novel in the public domain since the 1960s. The hospital asserts that the 1928 version of the play is still under copyright in the US.
The red words are important and will come back later. Also, I really want to visit this hospital cause it matters to me.
This is the link for the hospital and as well as the charity.
By the way, I would think it would be a good idea to donate to a hospital like this or others in your area. A children's hospital in Ontario, Canada; called Sick Kids, helped me through most of my childhood (that's another story) so I tend to want to donate to hospitals for kids.

Hi everyone! From Friday, November 10th to Saturday, November 11th, I'm doing a 24-hour Extra Life charity run of the Bachelor's route. I'll (try to) earn the Bachelor a total of 1,000,000 Money, while fundraising for a childrens' hospital near me! Come drop in to twitch.tv/rathologic, enjoy the challenge, and see Daniil fund his laboratory in-game while helping to defeat death in real life.
I have a number of donation incentives and milestones which will affect the playthrough, mainly by adding custom mods - if you can contribute, now's your chance to collectively make me sing a silly song about Bad Grief on air. If not, I'll really appreciate people stopping by to chat! To donate and for further details, check out my Extra Life participant page. Here are the individual incentives:
Upload a Painting: For a $10 donation to SickKids, I'll replace an in-game painting with an image of your choice and show it off during the marathon. You can provide the image link in the incentive submission window, or contact me here!
Color the Lamp: For a $25 donation to SickKids, one lucky person can change the color of the light from the Bachelor's kerosene lamp. This will affect the lighting in dark areas, such as the many, many infected houses I'll be raiding.
Rename the Bachelor: For a (generous!) $50 donation to SickKids, one lucky person can change the Bachelor's name to something other than "Daniil Dankovsky". I will update his name in the dialogue file and all applicable UI elements, and refer to him by that name throughout the marathon.
Again, this is 5pm EST-5pm EST on November 10th and 11th at twitch.tv/rathologic. Mark your calendars, and if you have any questions please contact me! Looking forward to seeing you all there. :-)
#pathologic#stream schedule#extra life#circulation appreciated on this one due to the links :-) super excited for it! the next week will be largely route planning/practice#& thanks to sourguppyworm for the daniil edit used in the first picture frame!#children's miracle network#extra life 2023

At least six doctors and healthcare workers were suspended at Toronto’s SickKids hospital for social media posts supporting Palestinians while doctors at St. Michael’s around the corner were allowed to share an hour-long lecture about Israel to staff and students.
Another half dozen physicians were removed from their roles assessing medical students’ residency applications at Queen’s University because they signed a petition calling for a ceasefire.
Meanwhile, medical schools are silent when it comes to doctors and a program director disseminating a list of students who signed the same petition with the intention of influencing their medical residency applications.
These are just some examples of what doctors describe as a recurring “double standard” in Canadian medical schools and hospitals where students and doctors say pro-Palestine advocacy is being silenced, even when similar actions for other causes—including support for the Israeli government—are allowed.
