It is no longer a slice of life modern au about the awkwardness of being in highschool with your great uncle- but it is now about your great uncle who is a retired magical girl. One that had to come out of retirement to save your ass from some shenanigans, and in the process you both awaken the demon that gave him his power in the first place. Oops.

I would really like to remind everyone that it’s canon (we didn’t make this up. We didn’t have to make this up Flanagan made it canon for us) that everyone just. Accepts that Will is Halt’s son. Gilan says that even though he and Halt will always be close, Halt and Will’s relationship is much closer and is father & son like. Pauline treats Will as her son. Horace sees Will as his brother and Halt as his uncle. Everyone sees Will and Halt and are like “this man. This man has adopted a child” which is so funny to me because imagine you’re in araluen and you see Greybeard halt who never smiles with his happy son who doesn’t shut up (AND they’re the same height). Flanagan does a lot wrong in the series but making Halt see Will as his son and the found family aspects are NOT one

There’s a lot to yap about with the world link event but looking back at this dialogue after Mizuki5 is :’) She knows running isn't a permanent solution and is putting so much thought in figuring out what to do after....

Though on a lighter note I also forgot how funny the Mizuki card is in context (mainly because of Meiko LOL) Look at her deadpan here she looks so unamused at Mizuki's stunt. If N25 Meiko has no fans then I’m dead etc etc

Going a LITTLE insane about Arafellin hair bells right now, because outside of a Southlander context in combat, they’re Borderlanders, they fight the Dark One, the bells are SUPPOSED to make a sound while they’re fighting, and would effectively scare off the ravens and rats that act as the Dark One’s eyes and his spies. Wearing something in combat, against the Shadow and otherwise, that would ‘scare off the eyes of the Lord of the Grave’ when they bring death to another, acting like a protective “ward” in a sense in battle. Is any of this explicitly said in the books? Not really, but it’s my interpretation.

Everyone thinks they can write a romance novel. Scratch that. They think they can write a romance novel better than all the other romance novels. Because of course they can. Romance is trite. It’s trashy. It’s simple.

Everyone thinks they can write a romance novel until they actually sit down to write one.

Because the people who disparage the genre are too embarrassed to engage deeply with the ideas that build the work, to make any meaningful commentary on anything, to add to any on-going conversations. They’re hovering above it all, too precious to land. Instead of writing a romance novel, they’re writing a novel that insists they’re beyond all of this, that says romance is beneath them, it’s not worthy of them.

So they end up with a parody of what they think romance is. I.e. they have written a bad romance novel.

I think it’s true that anyone can write romance. Anyone can do any of the cringey, heart-on-your-sleeve art. In fact, the hardest part is beginning.

Step one: You have to love the thing you’re making.

just the mental image of chapter 4 of the outsiders of johnny and ponyboy in the train car, and ponyboy falling asleep using johnny's legs as a pillow while johnny stays awake... i cry

johnny being unable to fall asleep so he just keeps an eye out as the train goes rattling on, and he can't help but rest a hand on ponyboy's hair, and look down at his best friend, and just like ponyboy thinks of him as a kicked puppy, all johnny can see is the wide-eyed, sweet little boy he met so many years ago.

ponyboy, who was the last of the outsiders gang to hold onto his innocence, who has now lost that because of the fight and bob's death.

johnny is probably the only person who sees how ponyboy feels about darry, and how their relationship has struggled. he sees how steve treats ponyboy, and knows that ponyboy needs some kind of constant, who won't fight with him, won't glare at him. someone who will make him feel heard, and protected, but not smothered.

and just like johnny is ponyboy's person, pony is johnny's. they're each other's entire world now that they're on the run.

and in the silence of the train car, johnny knows that if he had to do it all over again, he'd kill bob if it meant protecting his little brother.
