Fifth Review - Let’s Talk About DigiXroses

Been in a Digimon mood for a while, and I’ve spent part of that mood designing a few of my own Digimon. As I was planning and sketching things, I ended up coming back to Xros Wars (as I oft seem to do >_>). When it comes to fan created Digimon, I’d say 90% are based on Adventure (Child-to-Ultimate), with another 9% from 02 (Armors or Jogress) or Tamers (Bio-Merges). Very few OrigiDigi use the Spirit, Burst, or Xros mechanics, and the few times I have seen DigiXroses have been XrosUps (the blended forms seen in Boy Hunters).

However, the iconic DigiXroses are not XrosUps, but Xroses that utilize every element of the fusing Digimon in a very toyetic way, like a Megazord (maybe why I like them so much). I can count the number of times I’ve seen an OrigiDigi of this type attempted on one hand, and never more than a X2, which is where the above designs come into play.

I like Digimon, I like toys, and I like creature design, so I challenged myself to try designing a complete Xros of 3 or higher. As Shoutmon is loosely based on Omegamon, I used Dukemon as a rough base, then tried creating a new combination scheme. It was quite a long process, taking a few months of mental planning, and a few days of sketching.

I was so happy with this first attempt, that I ended up commissioning artist @/EL_POYOMON to render them in the traditional Digimon style (who you should go check out; they’re really cool and very nice).

Going through everyone in order, I wanted a small, Child-level-esque Digimon, similar to Shoutmon, which is where Partymon comes in. I mostly tried replicating Shoutmon’s general physique, with the head and dreads specifically being designed so they would form 1) a head piece similar to Dukemon’s, part of the reason he has non-standard eyes, and 2) the fingers for the right arm he would eventually form.

Since Shoutmon X5, MetalGreymon, and DarkKnightmon are all comprised of male Digimon, I specifically wanted a Digimon that was obviously female, hence Ladysmon. Her transformation scheme was probably the hardest, where I knew I wanted her to split down the middle, but it took me a while to figure out what to do with her arms. I also didn’t come up with the ladybug motif until I started planning names. I think my original plan for her was an angel? But I didn’t know what to do with her wings. Once I settled on ladybug, incorporating her wings into a Dukemon-esque shield became easy, and everything flowed after that.

The last of our trio is Comicmon. I settled on the dragon motif pretty early, as, like Ladysmon, Dragons are a pretty common Digimon staple that weren’t utilized in any of the canon Xroses. This design was probably the easiest to get to transform, and I’m pretty sure he has a drill because I needed something that looked like a lance, and drills are cool (and make great tails). Once I settled on a name, the POW using the eye as an O, and the comic-sound-effect-esque mane on the head and tail came quickly after.

There isn’t much to say about PartyKnightmon, since he’s a combination of all the above elements, so let’s talk about names. I don’t remember when I settled on “Partymon” as a name, but it existed long before any of the others had one. I was originally going to call their combined form “Partymon X3,” since Shoutmon is the only Digimon that uses that name scheme, and I wanted a second one, but as I was trying to come up with names for everyone else, the name PartyKnightmon popped into my head, and the names Ladysmon and Comicmon came soon after as they all had a common theme:

Party Night, Lady’s Night, Comic Night; PartyKnightmon, LadysKnightmon, ComicKnightmon. A unique name scheme that worked for possible X2s.

Maybe this is a little big headed of me, but one of my hopes in commissioning these guys was to inspire other people to try the idea. Compared to a usual Digimon line, DigiXroses are quite complicated when it comes to the toyetic design aspects, but it’s really a fun challenge. I’d love to see more artists with different design philosophies give it a shot.

And just because I cranked one out doesn’t mean I’m done with DigiXroses just yet. While these were being worked on, I started ironing out several more projects, including some evolutions related to these designs, a new X4 with intermediary Xroses, and a new evolution for the existing Greymon design. I don’t know if I’ll commission them all (because, remember, that costs money), but I will eventually post them "elsewhere” if you’re curious (@/EPY_RM).

Overall, this was a fun little self-challenge, which sent me down quite the design rabbit hole. I’d like it if at least one other person got a little inspiration from seeing these designs, as I really do want to see other people’s takes, so if you draw anything Xros Wars related, let me know! :)

Just for fun, here is a fight scene I helped write for an old Steven Universe/Digimon Xros Wars crossover I helped write years ago

The creature resembled a giant bear, wearing leather pants and a leather vest with bullet chains across his chest. On his right hand, it bore a strange looking weapon with three gun barrels extending from a circular metal piece. In its left hand was a massive spear, and attached to it was a white flag, with a strange symbol emblazoned on it; One half of it was a collection of hexagons, with the other half resembling half a radar. This circle was on a tilt, and put between what looked like a pair of bat wings. The cyborg bear planted the spear into the ground, and bellowed in a voice that could easily be heard by someone on the next continent.

 “HEATHENS!” the beast yelled, “I, CALLISMON, HAVE COME TO RETAKE THIS LAND IN THE NAME OF THE BAGRA ARMY FROM THE WRETCHED FUSION FIGHTERS!!!” Upon hearing the last part of the bear’s yellings, Garnet tensed, and heard a familiar set of voices in the back of her head.

 ‘Did he just say Fusion Fighters? one voice said.

 It sounded like it, Ruby, Another voice said, But how is that possible? None of the humans seem to have gems, and none of those creatures seem to have them either, so why do they call themselves Fusion Fighters?” Garnet looked on as the humans stared at the giant beast in shock.

 “Did he just say the Bagra Army?!” the red headed girl said in fear, holding onto a small pink rabbit-like creature while a wolf-like creature with orange and white fur which seemed to be covered in drills stood protectively near her.

 “I believe he did.” the wolf said in a deep serious voice before getting into a fighting position while baring his fangs.

 “Oh great.” said the small pink rabbit in the human’s arms, it’s ears pointed down and a scared expression on its face.

 “But they’re supposed to be gone” the younger blonde boy said, holding onto a small white and yellow creature.

 “This is not good, not good at all!” the creature yelled, clearly freaking out about the situation. 

 “Hmm…...it looks like this little reunion just got a bit more interesting huh guys?” said the older blonde with an annoyed expression as the more larger creatures stepped forward around him. A large dinosaur-like creature, a large mechanical bird, and a giant humanoid dragon wielding a two sided spear. While a smaller dragon stood beside the human.

 “It’s been too long since I’ve seen real action Christopher.” The dinosaur-like being said with a gruff voice and an attitude that reminded Garnet of a certain orange gem. “It will be just like old times.”

 “It has been a while since we’ve had a proper battle hasn’t it?” the large mechanical bird said in a much calmer tone while the cybernetic dragon just growled and aimed its spear at his opponent.

 “Shoutmon, wake up buddy we could really use your help right now” the goggle-headed boy said as he tried to shake the red dragon creature awake. 

 “Mikey’s right this is no time for napping!” a large mechanical beetle yelled at the smaller creature while the boy wearing green held onto him for protection. After a few seconds of shaking, the dragon stretched its arms and yawned before sitting up and looking at the human beside him. 

 “What is it Mikey? Can’t a ‘mon get a few minutes of rest for pete’s sake?” it said in a very tired voice before noticing the large threat standing before him. “Oh.” he said finally taking note of the threat. The dragon gestured for the boy, now known as Mikey to come closer and spoke to him briefly in a hushed tone, and the boy nodded and walked towards the bear-like creature.

 What’s he doing?! The first voice, Ruby, said, a tone of confusion entering her voice, That thing is five times his size, and has a giant gun! He’ll be vaporized in a second! Garnet was about to rush in and help the young children. But before she could do anything the human held up a small red device and said a phrase that shocked Garnet to her very gems.

 “DIGI-FUSE!!!”

 The object in the boy’s hand shown brightly, and a small group of the strange creatures were enveloped in a similarly bright light. The red dragon, the blue mechanical beetle, the wolf-like creature, a star shaped being which appeared to be wearing shades, and a collection of creatures resembling guitar picks were lifted into the air, and flew towards each other. When it looked like they would collide, the group were engulfed in a orb of light. It swirled and expanded, until it grew to a massive size. A silhouette appeared, and when the light dissipated, a large figure stood.

 The figure resembled a large mechanical man, with a body resembling that of the mechanical beetle, and legs of a style resembling the wolf. Upon its shoulders were the heads of the wolf and beetle, and a large red V crest was on its chest. It wore a silver helm, with three yellow horns jutting out of the front and back Along with the same yellow scarf that the dragon wore, now enlarged to fit it’s size. The mecha also seemed to wield a sword made from the star and pick shaped creatures, now covered in red hot flames. 

 “SHOUTMON X4!” the mecha announced in the same voice as the smaller dragon creature before it raised its sword, and charged Callismon. Garnet simply watched in shock at this new power. It seemed to emanate power stronger than even Sugilite. The large warrior attempted to slash at its opponent but before it could hit, the bear removed its flag-spear from the ground, and met the blade mid-swing. As the two clashed, the voices in Garnet’s mind began to panic.

 ‘Did they just fuse!?’ Ruby said within the fusion’s mind, ‘But they aren’t gems, how is this happening!?’

 ‘That boy seemed to use the object he held up to force them together’ the other voice, Sapphire, said, ‘And he’s forcing them to fight.’ Those poor creatures. Garnet looked on longer as the giant continued to clash with the bear, as the beast stepped back and aimed its right arm weapon at the large mecha.

 “RODEO BULLET!” he yelled as he fired a series of energy blasts at the mech, which the mech tried to block with its blade. As he did Callismon rushed forward in an attempt to gut the metallic man. However, a blast of energy cut him off before he could reach him. Callismon, as well as Garnet, looked up at the blast’s point of origin. The large mechanical bird was now diving at the Bear.

 “PLASMA CANNON!” the bird announced as he fired upon the beast. The blast hit him right in the face with deadly force. As Callismon held his face in pain the Dinosaur roared and charged at him.

 “HORN STRIKE!” it yelled as he thrust his horns straight into his opponent’s chest and sent him flying into a collection of trees. Callismon simply smirked.

 “Is that all you’ve got?” he said to his opponents. “Nothing will stop me from avenging Lord Bagra.” he said as he got back up and charged at the dinosaur. But before he could reach him he has interrupted by the spear-wielding dragon.

     “DEATH DIVIDER!” yelled the creature in a raspy voice as its spear into the ground and span around its shaft, striking Callismon multiple times with its tail. The two other creatures looked over to the blonde boy who Garnet remembers them referring to as Christopher. They nodded at him and, in a sort of silent agreement, he nodded back before pulling out a device similar to the one the goggle headed boy used only it was a royal blue color.

     “DIGI-FUSE!” yelled the boy as the two large creatures were enveloped in a similar light that created the titan.

     oh no. thought Garnet. Not another one. She watched as the two lights merged and when the light cleared, she could only watch in shock at the new creature. It resembled the large dinosaur like being Garnet saw earlier, but it was covered in mechanical parts. It wore a blue helmet with a red visor and spike on top, chestplate, and thigh guards, which had three red discs on each guard.  A pair of massive mechanical wings stretched from its back, turrets between them. A large metal claw shone on its left arm, and when its tail flicked, the gem noticed the head and neck of the mechanical bird had been added onto the tail of the dinosaur-like creature, extending its length. 

     ‘METALGREYMON!” yelled the newly formed armored creature. Meanwhile, Callismon had knocked the cybernetic dragon down with a powerful strike from his spear. The bear then noticed the new fusion that stood before him.

 “GIGA DESTROYER!” The cyborg dragon bellowed as it aimed all of its gun ports from the ones on its wings, to the two which flipped out from the wings’ bases, to one in the mouth of the mechanical bird’s head on its tail at the bear creature and unleashed another barrage of energy blasts.

 Oh no, Sapphire said, that titan was bad enough, but that poor creature looks even more deformed.

 We have to do something Sapphire! Ruby exclaimed from Garnet’s mind, Those humans are forcing those creatures into unnatural fusion. At this point, the dragon charged the cyborg bear, burying its horn into Callismon’s chest. The cyborg threw back its head, launching its enemy into the air.

 “Sparrowmon, Monitamon, go get ‘em” yelled the girl with the strange pigtails. A creature that appeared to be some kind of yellow jet-like creature with two guns in its hands then flew at Callismon with six small beings that appeared to have TV monitors as heads flew at blinding speeds towards him.

 “RANDOM LASER!” yelled the yellow creature as it fired off blasts of energy from its guns and from another that appeared on its back.

 “LIGHTNING FLASH!” yelled the smaller monitor-headed creatures as they fired off bolts of electricity beside the yellow creatures’ blasts. They hit dead on and created a big puff of smoke. The creatures yelled triumphantly before Callismon appeared out of the smoke screen and slammed all seven creatures back down to the ground with his right arm, creating a larger tower of dust.

 “Oh no, Sparrowmon!” yelled the girl as she looked on in horror. The dust cleared revealing the injured forms of the creatures. The large mechanical warrior saw this and the turned to Callismon, who bore a confident grin on his muzzle.

 “You’re gonna regret that.” it said as he charged at the beast with the armored dinosaur right beside him. The mecha swung his sword as the cyborg thrust his claw forward. A loud clang echoed as Callismon simply blocked the dragon’s claw with his right arm weapon and parried the sword with the pole of his spear.

 “You are the ones who defeated the great Lord Bagra?” questioned the bear. “This is almost too easy.” He said as he pushed against both creatures with enough force to throw them back several feet and landing very ungracefully with the mecha landing on its back and the cyborg landing on its front

 ‘He keeps mentioning that word’ Sapphire said within Garnet ‘Lord Bagra, Bagra Army. What does it mean? Garnet painfully decided to keep watching to get a better idea of what she’s witnessing. Without her future vision she’ll be running in blind. So she needs to get a good idea of what she’s up against. 

 “HAVE AT THEE BAGRA SCUM!” Garnet looked back at the fight to see the Knight like being charging at the beast wielding a large sword beside a platoon of smaller white armored creatures wielding spears. “CHECKMATE BREAK!” yelled the group of creatures as they became enveloped in energy and charged all together at Callismon. The bear simply chuckled a bit as he simply smacked the group away once they came close, sending them flying back towards the mecha and dragon.

 “Oh no, Knightmon!” yelled Mikey.

 “This is not how I wanted to spend this visit!” Yelled the boy in green clearly not keeping his cool in this situation. “‘Let's go visit the gang in the Digital World’ you said ,It won’t be dangerous at all’ you said.”

 “Oh, would you quit it!” The red-haired girl said, knocking him on the back of the head. “This is NOT the time to be freaking out.”

 “Knightmon! Are you okay?” asked the mecha. The knight, now known as Knightmon had spirals in his eyes as did the smaller warriors.

 “For the glory of the Duke of fruit baskets.” said the knight dizzily. The mecha mustered up all its strength to get up before turning to its cybernetic comrade.

 “Hey, MetalGreymon, get up will ya.” said the large warrior “You’re not starting to go soft on me are ya?” The armored beast stirred at the giant’s teasing before rising from its place on the ground to a standing position.

 “Not a chance, X4.” said MetalGreymon before it faced the bear creature. “You're in for it now, dirtbag!” he yelled as he charged at Callismon at top speed before delivering a strike with his armored claw “TRIDENT ARM!” he yelled as his claw shined with a bright red light before it connected with the bear-like creature’s chin which then sent him flying several stories into the air. “Take the shot!” The dragon snarled at the titan.

 “Right.” The titan turned to its airborne opponent, sword raised. “BURNING STAR CRUSHER!!” it yelled before bringing its sword down. The swing generated a V shaped energy slash which hit Callismon on his way down. Callismon yelled out in agony as he was hit with devastating force. He crashed to the ground in a puff of smoke. When the dust cleared the bear was badly injured, his form fading. With his last breath he uttered these final words: “Long…….live…...the Bagra…...Army.” and then burst apart into a collection of yellow dots. The group below cheered, but Garnet paled at the sight and stared in horror and confusion at what she just witnessed.

I might post the second fight scene between Xros Heart/Fusion Fighters and the Crystal Gems if I feel like it, or people request it.

Well today is apparently the 8th anniversary of Digimon Fusion, and while I’m going to go off of the sub (Xros Qars), if I’m going to do this re-watch liveblog thing it’s as good a time as any to start.

Haven’t really tried anything of this style, so I’m experimenting a little bit.

Pic of the day: Common sense

We open with a menacing army full of Mookmon, sorry, Troopmon, Tankmon, and some bigger baddies. Like physically bigger, I don’t recall them being very important. (I see you Valvemon in the top left.)  

Then we get introduced to a human and a trio of Digimon that will in no way be important.

There’s also an army of good guys, you can tell they are good guys because they show up in previous seasons.  I uh, only actually remember two of them appearing in this show.

Anyway, Taiki says Digixros a bunch, and the three non-silhouettes merge together into….x4?  Poor Starmon I guess, no recognition.  

X4 then solos the army of Mookmon, which is probably why the rest of the ‘good’ army never appears again, clearly they are superfluous.  But X4 gets taken down by a lone off-color Greymon because nostalgia.

..and it was a dream.

(So Akari and Zenjirou don’t matter....that sounds about right.)

We are then introduced to Akari, who is trying to deduce exactly which ball-based team sport she got stood up for.

She stops midway to take a selfie, kids these days, amirite?  Also to grab a bag with Taiki’s name on it...literally.

Taiki manages to pull an MVP move on the basketball court, by pretending to be in a sports anime when really just passing to a teammate.  Thus securing the team the win that he’s been looking for for months… sorry, I mean four days.

Yeah, that’s a Taiki thing.  The kid is a prodigy at nearly anything he picks up.  The implication is that he throws himself into it completely, and then:

He does not necessarily pick the best time or place for a nap.

Akari being the best character (of this arc)

Taiki reveals that his need to throw himself headfirst is because of a desire to help those in need, not because he’s just showing off.

(I am reminded how much his gary-stu ness annoyed me the first time I watched this.)

Zenjirou shows up and I’m def going to spell that name wrong at some point.  He’s mostly here for comic relief, but also to reinforce that Taiki can pick up a sport (kendo) in a couple of days and beat people who have been training their entire lives.

While Akari and Zenjirou rehash the great 1998 case of Bros V. Hoes, Taiki hears the voice of a dying king, then suddenly: chaos.  Cars merge into walls, phones stop working, the sky turns green, dogs and cats, living together.

Turns out, cars superimposed into building are not stable.  The strange voice warns Taiki of the falling car, and after he saves his friends, he is now able to see the tortured outline of Shoutmon.

All well and good, Taiki, but how do you propose helping the disembodied light?

(We also get a flashback to baby Taiki between these)

Shoutmon soft-mocks Taiki for trying to help him, and Taiki points out Shoutmon did the same, just in case you didn’t believe they were destined partners.

Floating toy with another disembodied voice.  Offering to help if Taiki accepts, he does and the x loader turns from white to red.  The others reasonably do not think touching the floating mystical toy is a good idea.

They wake up in a strange world, normal Digimon stuff, turns out the X-loader doubles as a Pokecenter, very convinent.

Then, suddenly the army of mookmon appear, lead by a new Digimon:

(Look. if the writers determined you were going to die every season, you wouldn’t be very happy either.)

But then dream Digimon #2 shows up to save them, alongside a bunch of babies.  Shoutmon also comes out to fight.  .

We get a quick sequence of the allies using special attacks to wipe the floor with the mooks, normal debut episode things.  Then Madleomon gets mad that a human is involved and absorbs all his friends to…Digivolve?

(They missed a perfect opportunity for raving MadLeomon)

Uhh, good plan?

The mysterious voice tells Taiki to use the x-loader, which he does to form…the top half of a super-fighting robot.  Which lasts long enough to get off one punch before dissolving. He then xroses the Starmon and Pickmons into a sword, (will happen a bunch.) just in case you weren’t sure of the core mechanic.

Madleomon’s powerup breaks, and he gets forced back, namedropping a greater villain.  Tactimon, obsessed with perfection.  Which is a good thing, because if he’s like half the perfectionist I know he’ll be too busy sorting out all the details of his plan to actually execute it.

Coming on a little strong there bub.  Maybe take him out for a coffee first?

The name of the kids this time is generals, but that also gets extended to some Digimon.

If you are used to normal Digimon seasons, this is going to be a bit of a jump.  It isn’t the normal 1 human 1 partner here.  This is a battle of armies, (but mostly just jogress ++)

And yeah, they know nothing.

Keep being creepy Nene.

And also blond blue boy featuring off-color Greymon. 

And thus ends the first episode that was mostly about introducing Taiki, and the concept of Digixrosing. Also uses a lot of X4 for never showing every component.

I think maaayyybe Vmon shows up in a limited capacity?  For a series that is perfectly willing to completely ignore levels and do something completely different in terms of evolution, there sure is a lot of nostalgia pandering.

Digimon Xros Wars Ep18 Liveblog

It’s time for the Forest Zone now! A Digimon called Stingmon protects the area, and attacks the team until Lilamon says that they’re all nice. Then, like always, the Bagra Army shows up.

everyone lingering in the sky before looking down and realizing that they’re in the sky like a scooby-doo cartoon is fun, especially sincr it is plausible that the nature of the Digital World allows for weird physics like that.

oh, it’s Nene’s brother’s Digimon who eventually suffers from a terrible fate. today, he is Lilithmon’s pet, which raises some ethical questions that I am not going to dig into.

i think the implication here is that Beelzebumon’s injury came from Zenjirou flailing around while Beelzebumon was trying to grab him and Akari? which is hilarious. but it also leaves Beelzebumon at an unfortunate advantage when Stingmon attacks him.

it’s always kinda cute when tough hero-types get all flustered around their crush, like Stingmon has

also, I can’t help but feel bad for Akari and Zenjirou... Lilamon’s insistance that they’re a lovey-dovey couple will probably make their friendship pretty awkward.

and so much for this being another Zone untouched by the Bagra Army. wait no, the preview showed Nene and the blue guy being in charge, so maybe this is actually DarkKnightmon’s army?

and now since Dorulumon left to look for Cutemon, X2 is used for the first time in a while and some other teammates get to show up for the first time in a while.

Tactimon is here, so that means this is an attack by the Bagra Army? then what are Nene and Kiriha trying to do? maybe they’re trying to beat the army to something important in the zone?

on yeah this is kind of a rematch against Tactimon. it has been a while, and X4B is a big number, so now Shoutmon can hold his own against Tactimon.

ok a lot just happened. Kiriha and MetalGreymon handily defeated Stingmon and the other Digimon protecting the area, but refused to attack further because he only wishes to fight strong opponents. But Nene seems to desperately need her plan to succeed (the reason why is unknown, and even Sparrowmon, who is noted to be incredibly close to Nene, has no idea what’s up with her) and insists that Kiriha continues his attack — an incredibly brutal order. But Kiriha refuses (likely dissolving his partnership with Nene’s team in the process), and DarkKnightmon reloads from Nene’s Xros Loader (to her dismay — did she have something to prove by taking care of the whole operation on her own?) to beat up Kiriha and his Digimon. but then X4 intercepts one of DarkKnightmon’s attacks, but then the shrine that the warriors of love were protecting swallows up Stingmon to heal him, and DarkKnightmon takes the opportunity and grabs Nene and walks into the shrine. what’s most notable about this is that being brutal is clearly stressful for Nene — although she is a General same as everyone else, she’s always saying stuff like “please stay out of the way” like she wants to make sure no one gets hurt unnecessarily. this tracks with her ultimate goal — she wants nothing more than to save her brother, and only does things that she thinks will further that goal. she doesn’t necessarily want to be fighting this war. this is unlike Taiki and Kiriha, who are far more invested in their roles as Generals.

also, it’s worth nothing that, if I remember right, “warriors of love” actually refers to all kinds of love (not just romantic love, unlike what Lilamon would like you to believe), which is going to come into play in the next episode and should mean something important for Kiriha.

Next time, Akari and Zenjirou ungraciously take up the mantle of warriors of love while Kiriha probably learns an important lesson.

Oh my goodness; new DigiXros content!? Did my birthday come early this year?

For a little context, the user "Ray Chan" on Behance posted a bunch of concept art from a game they worked on in 2013 under the developer The Playforge for a Digimon Fusions game commissioned by Saban. I'll leave a link [HERE] if you want to go read the full thing and see some of the mock-ups.

But I'm a big fan of DigiXroses (or in this case Fusions), having designed quite a few myself, so I thought it would be fun to go through all of them and give my thoughts. I know these are more in the style of things like DonShoutmon and BalliBastemon than the toyetic stuff I design, but a DigiXros is a DigiXros, and some of these are really cool.

Let's start with the Shoutmon stuff. Ray Chan mentions that they chose to fuse random Digimon together as an exercise, and all of the Shoutmon Xroses feel like that. Which, honestly, I think is a fun idea, and one I might try doing myself some day.

As for the Shoutmon X Shadramon design, I dig it. We have three versions here. The very superhero, uncolored design is probably my least favorite, if only because it's trying too hard to be cool. I much prefer the smaller version of the design. It does a good job of merging the already existing segmentation in Shoutmon's design with the Courage Armor aesthetic. The flame details on the mask are also very sharp. The lankier version is ok, but I think it suffers from the same issue I had with the uncolored one where it's trying very hard to be cooler than it needs to be. Those proportions feel closer to an Armor Evolved Shoutmon than a DigiXros.

Then there are these two, the last of the new Shoutmon X2s. The first Pharaohmon Xros is very fun, and I like the additional red. This one also feels very superhero, but Pharaohmon already has that silhouette naturally, so it works. The second design feels more like how the show would blend them, similar to things like PawnShoutmon or JijiShoutmon. It's not as visually appealing as the first, but small touches like the new shoulders really help it stand out.

I really appreciate that they did a Revolmon/Deputymon Xros, since he was a member of Xros Heart. As for the design, it's pretty great. There's a more subtle V incorporated into the poncho, Shoutmon's face is well incorporated into the bandana and horns. It really blends the two ideas to make something new yet reminiscent. However, it doesn't feel very DigiXros; if you used Shoutmon King instead, you could easily call this a Jogress in the same vein as Paildramon.

And we have a new X4! It's such a weird combination of Digimon, but that's part of why I like it so much. I like the humanoid design more, personally; Shoutmon, Lunamon, and Revolmon all have those general proportions, so it makes sense that a Xros of them would maintain that. The gun arms I also feel work in this case. Of all the versions they did of it, the one with the hat is my favorite, as it's obviously Revolmon's hat, but also blends Shoutmon and Lunamon into it. The one issue I have is Togemogumon isn't very incorporated apart from the feet and a few colors; this could have been a X3 with a little tweak.

The less humanoid design I don't like as much, but I also really appreciate it. Not every Xros should be cool; some of them should be weird or goofy. This version has a unique silhouette, and blends Togemogumon a lot more than the other, even if Revolmon is less apparent apart from the chest cannon (and even then, it's very generic). And there's nothing to say the same four Digimon can't Xros in multiple ways, something SkullKnightmon and DeadlyAxemon did in the show, and something I've been working with with Himemon XAT and XSR.

Now we move onto what is personally my favorite of all the revealed concepts, Sparrowmon X Guardromon. It stands out to me because, with a few tweaks, I could easily imagine this as a toy, where Guardromon's head flips into the torso, and its forearms open up and swap the hands for the drills. On the rare chance I get around to kitbashing a Shoutmon X5, I'd definitely want to try doing a Guardromon so I could do this form as well.

As for the design itself, the fact that its forms are so visibly separated is what probably appeals to me to most. The drills are most likely inspired by Sparrowmon's ray guns. The only thing stopping this from being a near-perfect toyetic DigiXros is the feet, but I understand the want for a visual shake-up.

And now we get to talk about the most interesting through-line in this series of concept arts; Dracomon. It seems like the designers had the idea that, to match Shoutmon from Xros Heart, they could use Dracomon as a similar-sized mascot character and center point for Blue Flare. Dracomon's combinations are much more Fusion than DigiXros, but I really like the idea of re-imagining the Blue Flare team with Dracomon as the center.

As for Dracomon X BlueMeramon, it's a neat design. I like the general shape and flaming wings, but it doesn't really feel like either of its components. The face is too different, and the armor shapes and core come from nowhere. It feels like a Lv5 evolution of Dracomon, like Wingdramon or Groundramon (do we have a Flardramon?). A really cool Digimon design, but a pretty bad DigiXros, sadly. Really glad they didn't go with the superhero shaped one.

And then, like Shoutmon, we have this random X4 using Yasyamon, MetalMamemon, and Catsuramon. Despite its appearance, having two Lv5s in there would mean it's probably pretty powerful. Unlike the previous one, this one actually incorporates all the elements of the component Digimon quite well, having Dracomon as a base, and various armor parts from everyone else dotted throughout in a slightly better way than Shoutmon's. I also really like the uncolored concepts as well, even if they feel less like DigiXroses than the one they went with. (Wonder if I could convince Poyo to draw #2?)

But I think the set of designs that will grab most peoples' attention are the Dracomon and Blue Flare Xroses. These feel like the only designs that were made for the game as a forethought, rather than being a fun experiment.

Dracomon X MailBirdramon is a pretty good Xros, borrowing quite a bit from MetalGreymon in the claws, tail, and wings, but the smaller nature and head design do make it feel more its own. I do wish it differentiated itself a bit more, maybe brought in a bit more green, reduced the armor a bit, but think it's a good start. I also really like how the changed the horns.

Then we get our Shoutmon X4 equivalent. I suppose this would be Dracomon X3? It definitely pulls a lot from it, with the heads on the shoulders and the humanoid silhouette. That being said, and knowing that's what it's trying to accomplish, I think it pulls it off really well (with the caveat of it being a Fusion and not a DigiXros). It does a good job of pulling in elements from all three Digimon. It also has a similar vibe to the WayGreymon design I did a bit ago, so I wonder if I can use some of these ideas as inspiration in the future? Still, I think this is a fun design, and accomplishes what the designers seemed to be setting out to do.

And the last design we have to look at for today is Dracomon X4. Funnily enough, this feels very show Xros, essentially being Dracomon X3 with elements of Cyberdramon added onto it. It definitely feels very final form, but maybe not hero final form? Though I suppose that works for Blue Flare.

At the end of the day, I'm just pumped to see more DigiXros content, even if it isn't the toyetic stuff I'm more fond of. It's also the first new DigiXros content we've gotten since Boy Hunters ended over 10 years ago, even if it isn't "official." Like I've said about my own content, I hope these inspire a few people to try designing a DigiXros. I'd love to see other peoples' takes. I'd also love to be not the only person who draws this stuff.
