At Ebooks Direct: today's annoyance

I had a note earlier in the week from someone who let me know that they'd tried to pick up a discounted ebook bundle during the sale over the weekend, but they hadn't been able to. They wanted to use their credit card, but the store wasn't showing any payment method but PayPal.
That was genuinely bizarre, because of course we take credit cards! So I went digging around a bit under the store's hood to see if I could find out what the problem was.
Sure enough, when I tested the shopping cart and tried to go through the. checkout process, no credit card option was displaying. And shortly, with further digging, I found out that an updated gateway app to our credit card processor (Stripe), after being installed, had not also been enabled. Hence the store's front end did not display the credit card option for the whole duration of the sale.

...Now, since we have another holiday weekend coming up—it's about to be the June bank holiday in Ireland—I'd already been planning to hold another weekend sale that would be publicized elsewhere. And that'll be going ahead as scheduled.

WARNING : OPINIONATED, AGREE TO DISAGREE, some speculative things. Mercedes shooter/snowflakes who hate getting their opinions hurt/who close their eyes blind fuck off
I'm a Mercedes defender but you CANNOT say that at ONE POINT in George's career, they can be manipulative af.
Two things can be TRUE, AT THE SAME FUCKING TIME:
1. Mercedes helps and choose George, George loves and choose Mercedes
2. At some point of his career, there were manipulative acts performed by Mercedes.
Let's talk from the beginning
I don't think i need to tell the story about George's powerpoint presentation saga anymore because all of us know it. But shortly,
His manager got a hold of Toto's email > George sent his CV > Toto saw em and invited George > George came ALONE to Toto's office and there were other higher ups > presentation > Toto mesmerized because of how George is very brave to go inside his office and present his "why you should pick me" CV alone without parents/manager > Toto want him in the junior team but can only offer an ass team > George refused for an English team (Carlin Volkswagen) > Toto say "i told you you're wrong but let's keep on contact"
Then George blew his expectations. Did a pretty good season in F3 EU first year. But he got into a financial problem which he later resorted to testing for BMW in DTM as he looked for plan B. He cooked their. First on the record, allegedly beat Audi and Mercedes too. BMW liked George so much that they threw him a $$$,$$$ contract directly. But the testing saga was leaked by an ex-BMW employee who moved to Mercedes and Mercedes came back to George.
Okay, if you're saying "oh awreeee, but george chose mercedes" oh amandaaa, for the second time, it was mercedes who approached george.

Although George in the end DID choose Mercedes, you can't look at this statement and tell me "oh my word! this is so pressure-less! i bet they're having tea over this talk!" 🥰🥰🥰 "Oh but Ari this is normal-" you're talking to me here as someone who will NEVER be in the position of money-less and your dream in the verge of getting over.
The keyword here is "It was absolutely clear from Mercedes-Benz". You are EIGHTEEN or SEVENTEEN with a career most possibly focused on racing. And a powerhouse company said "there won't be an option with Mercedes Benz in the future (if you pick BMW)". And if you look at it, you don't need to be a Law Student or a Comms Student to know that the deal they're offering to George is so fucking ass. Do ALL the sims for Merc, they test you on and off the track. All that and they say "oh but we won't be so sure tee hee~ we'll get back to you in October 🩵🩵🩵". All that while not letting him keep the BMW contract. George did choose Mercedes, but you can't tell me that there is no pressure (or minor gaslighting) at all from a big company who had ventures in GT/DTM/F1 to a 17/18 y.o who had financial problems and is desperate to continue his career.
Second. During this "test" period for George's second year at F3 EU. They also did not allow him to continue with Carlin despite George wanting to because Carlin is supported by Volkswagen. He had to opt for Hitech, a completely new team (rumored to get that discounted price seat in exchange for driver coaching his teammate Mazepin, whose father sponsors Hitech)

You can have a different opinion about this and you might say "eh but that makes sense, it's job obligation" but for me "why let go of Carlin VW when they don't even guarantee anything about George's seat in the junior team"
Other saga of this "shady ass slightly manipulative shit" Merc did? Whatever that Red Bull saga is

The fact that they said this while also thinking about someone else in that Merc seat in 2022 LOL 💀💀💀 Even when George was almost out of his seat in 2020, they'd rather send George to GT or DTM than let him go to Red Bull or other team. In 2020, he was linked to a Ferrari or McLaren seat. You can say "why would you want him-" and I'll say that you only say this because you're in the future now and you know George is in Mercedes. But if you were BACK THEN and he's on the verge of getting his seat grabbed by someone else and his team snoozed around just because they won't let him go, you'd want to bite their neck off too.
But yeah as I said earlier, this is my opinion and some of the red flags I see. You can't 100% glorify Mercedes for helping George. I'm very thankful they helped George throughout his career. George is in his place now partly because of Mercedes. But let's not act like Merc is a divine angel for helping someone out. They did some red flags too. George chooses them, YES. But let's not act like there is absolutely no pressure at all to a minor at that time.

When considering the various polymaths who have speckled history's pages, Hiccup Haddock was certainly more influential than many of his peers in this multi-talented category, with noted and far-reaching works in the economic, political, social and scientific realms.  Indeed, compared to the Arabian polymath Ibn al-Haytham, who passed away shortly before Haddock's rise to prominence, Haddock's direct effects on history are immeasurably greater.  This holds true even when putting aside the fact that Haddock encountered al-Haytham's writings later in life and immediately began to make use of them in some of the most earth-shattering scientific innovations of his career.  However, this is exaggerated to the point where, in much of the literature on the topic, he is held up as singularly influential, a world-changer without peer in his own or any era. 
What many of these historians have failed to consider is the simple facts of Haddock's life in comparison with those of other exceptional intellects—he was of the nobility, and as the first tamer of dragons, essentially sat on a treasury equal to that of the combined vaults of every contemporary European noble and royal.  This meant that unlike many other polymaths throughout history, Haddock, as his own patron, needed not labor for his supper; he was able to pour significant efforts and funds into his experiments without worrying about where his next meal would come from, and could afford to share his innovations freely.  Al-Haytham, in contrast, had to work as a tutor, and was once imprisoned under house arrest for ten years by the Fatimid Caliph while feigning madness to avoid punishment.  While Al-Haytham spent the time imprisoned productively, writing his famous Book of Optics and other treatises on math and the sciences, the obvious question arises of what sort of innovations the man might have produced had he possessed Haddock's resources and freedoms.
This is not to discount the distractions and diversions of focus that his diplomatic accomplishments cost Haddock, as he was the chief's herald and later the chief and king himself.  However, while his innovations and dragons attracted significant and intense interest from all over Europe and Asia Minor, the argument may be reduced to the point that, regardless of how many offers of alliance or marriage were made to Haddock and how many state visits he made over the course of his life, even with his complete upending of the status quo in regards to communications speeds, he still possessed idle time and resources in abundance for the pursuit of knowledge and innovation, something not available to most other polymaths in history.

Summary and Details…
Previous Chapter Recap/Context: Sebastian and Kate are on a trip in the Scottish Highlands, exploring the mysterious Blackfold Castle. Protective wards, set by a queen who took her own life, have kept curious treasure-hunters away for centuries. Somehow, Kate and Sebastian are able to enter the palace with very little effort. The great hall of the castle provides much information - a piece of parchment somehow interacts with them, asking them to view the memories of Queen Eilionoir through a Pensieve and promising a great reward for doing so. The memories tell the tragic story of Eilionoir Aitken and Neacal Brody, childhood friends turned lovers who planned to marry but were thwarted when a prince asked for her hand. Her family was destitute, and her father saw the marriage as economically and socially advantageous, agreeing to the match without a second thought. The night before her wedding, Neacal and Eilionoir met in secret and completed a magical ritual for reincarnation. Trapped in a joyless marriage, Eilionoir only found reprieve in writing letters back and forth with Neacal, but Prince Luthais eventually discovered their correspondence and deemed Neacal a traitor to the crown, executing him while Eilionoir watched. Shortly after becoming king, Luthais was assassinated. Still miserable, the queen dismissed the entire castle staff, placed protective wards over the castle, set up the great hall for her future visitors, and, presumably, ended her own life. Sebastian and Kate realize, finally, that they are Neacal and Eilionoir.

Chapter 43: A Legacy of Love
Kate touches Sebastian’s arm to halt him. “Wait, Sebastian.”
He turns to face her, wide-eyed and determined.
“Sebastian… Before we write to Eilionoir, we should take a moment. That… that was a lot to process.” She pauses, then smiles. “My love… Do you understand…?”
He gazes upon her for a long moment, grinning brightly. He takes her hands in his. “It was us. Kate… that was us.”
Kate squeezes his hands. “I never knew it was possible. Never. I thought reincarnation was one of those fantastical things people like to believe in.” She moves in closer, looking up at him. “But we did it. You did it.” She chuckles. “Of course you did it! If anyone could, it would be you, Sebastian. Your mind… your passion for learning… creating a spell that endured centuries, that defied death.”
Sebastian speaks warmly. “Don’t discount yourself. Look around, my sun. You did all of this. Your magic was so powerful! You could create protective wards that stood the test of time. You planned and left this here… I think you left this here for us… only us.” He gestures at the table and the Pensieve.
Her mind spins, considering his idea. “No one could ever come into the castle except us…” She trails off, then contemplates it more. “Is it even possible to set wards to only allow specific people inside?”
“Yes,” he replies quickly. “It is possible. I don’t know how, but I know it’s possible. And I’ll find out how you did it. Just give me time - I will research.”
She smiles at him, breathless, then embraces him. 
“Sebastian… It all makes sense now,” she whispers, pulling slightly away from him to look in his eyes. “It’s why we have always been so drawn to each other. It’s why I felt… complete… the first time we kissed…”
“You did?” he asks, quirking an eyebrow.
“Yes. Have I never told you that?”
“No,” Sebastian replies. “But I felt that way, too.” He pauses, suddenly realizing another clue. “And Kate - we met on the night of a full moon!”
“That’s right!” Kate gasps. “Good gods, it was all destined! We were meant to meet. To find each other.”
Sebastian presses his forehead to hers. “Kate, we were born for each other. This was always the plan.”
“It was. It really was,” she murmurs, her face filled with wonder.
Their lips press together in a long and serious kiss. When it ends, they spend a full minute in silence, simply searching each other’s eyes. Sebastian eventually pulls Kate back in, desperate to physically connect once more. Both smile and chuckle as their kiss ends. Neither can fathom that the first true case of reincarnation ever personally witnessed consists of each other. 
Kate feels so light, as if her soul is being carried towards the sun by lacewing flies - the impossible is, in fact, possible, and achieved because of their love for each other. There is a great comfort in knowing that her gut feeling, the one that insisted that this man was exactly who she was meant to be with, was not just a hunch. It was real and fated - and now they would continue a legacy of love that was once cut short.  
“We will do what they never could,” Kate muses. “We will get married. We will grow old together. Spend our entire lives in each other’s arms.”
“Oh, Kate,” Sebastian whispers, clinging to her. “If it’s even possible, I love you even more now. There’s no question, no doubt left for us.”
“No,” she replies, still grinning. “None at all.”
After some more kissing, giggling, and giddiness, they finally make their way to the table, hand in hand, breathless with excitement, their faces filled with pure joy. Sebastian cannot stop looking at Kate - his one true love, his soulmate.
Sebastian immediately dips the quill into the pot of ink, then writes in Scottish Gaelic, translating it all for Kate.
Queen Eilionoir, we have finished viewing your memories.
She replies quickly. I am glad to hear it.
May I ask how it is possible that you are communicating with us?
Ever the curious one. This parchment is enchanted to contain my conscious memory from the day I departed this world. Now, may I ask a question? Do you both know now why you are here?
Sebastian chuckles a little. “That’s kind of a loaded question.”
We, Kate and Sebastian, are Eilionoir Aitken and Neacal Brody, reincarnated. And we were meant to come here to make this discovery. 
Yes. You would never have made it into the castle otherwise. 
So, it is true. You set up the wards in such a way that only you and Neacal could enter.
Yes. I knew it was risky to do such a thing, but I was certain that Neacal’s soul would carry his adventurous nature and that someday it would lead him here. I trusted Neacal more than anything in the entire world. If he believed his spell for rebirth would work, I would never doubt it.
How did you set up wards this way?
There is so much to tell that I believe it a poor use of time to discuss enchantments at the moment. Besides, you will learn on your own. I know it. Now, ask a more important question while I still have time.
Kate glances and grins at Sebastian. He really must be so much like Neacal.
 Why? Why did you do such a thing?
It takes a moment for her next message to appear on the parchment, as though she is thinking and choosing her words carefully. I must tell you first that there was no sadness in my decision. I was overjoyed to shed this body and meet Neacal once more in the great beyond, and for us to have our next chance. I did it all for us. For love. I desired to give our future selves the best chance possible to succeed and to not suffer like we did.
How is that? By giving us this information?

Sebastian and Kate are silent for several moments, contemplating all they have learned. When Kate sighs, Sebastian stands up straight and brings his girlfriend into his arms for a long embrace. She melts into him, closing her eyes in satisfaction. He kisses the top of her head.
When they pull apart, they immediately see three things.
Queen Eilionoir’s correspondence is on fire, burning up.
The table now holds two rings and a much smaller piece of parchment.
Behind the pensieve, items materialize out of thin air, as if they had always been there, just invisible. A chest filled with coins. Emeralds, rubies, sapphires, pearls. Crowns set on pillows. Necklaces, earrings, and rings. A bronze handheld mirror, along with a golden comb. A scepter. Large shields. Several ornate swords. Breathtakingly bejeweled wand holders. A pair of golden slippers. Gorgeous pieces of fabric - silks and furs. An embroidered purple cloak. Dresses fit for royalty. Dragonhide boots. A large stack of old tomes. An antique lute. A huge banner bearing a coat of arms. A bronze compass. A marble bust of a woman wearing a tiara. Incredibly rare and exotic ingredients for potions.
Kate blinks several times, then rubs her eyes. How could this be? She turns to Sebastian, who wears a similar dumbfounded expression as he faces her.
“Is this really all for us?” Kate says in a hushed voice.
Sebastian nods. “I think so. Eilionoir said… she didn’t want us to worry about money. She didn’t want it to determine our future, like it did hers.”
Kate imagines what must have taken place. The queen must have gathered as many valuables as she could before exiting the castle for the last time, leaving the artifacts for the future Eilionoir and Neacal to discover. She must have carefully thought it all through. The trust she had in Neacal and his spell for reincarnation must have been positively limitless. Kate smiles, realizing it is a trait she carried on - absolute and unconditional faith in the man she loves. 
“Kate,” Sebastian says, interrupting her thoughts. “Eilionoir said we would only have about twenty minutes until the castle is destroyed. I know there’s a lot to process and discuss, but we must hurry if we are to take this all with us.”
She nods in response, coming to her senses. “You’re right. Yes.”
The two of them easily work in tandem. Inside her extendable bag, Kate waits for Sebastian to levitate the items and direct them to her, where she waits at the bottom of the ladder. She then works to organize and stack the items as carefully as she can. The small space, really, not much bigger than a walk-in closet, is quickly filled. She hurries up the ladder when they have finished packing, closing the enchanted bag. Then, she shrinks it and places it inside a pocket in her trousers.
Sebastian and Kate are about to exit the castle when she suddenly remembers what they saw on the table. She takes his hand and rushes to it. Unfolding the small piece of parchment, she shows it to him, since she cannot understand Scottish Gaelic. 
He breathes out, smiling. “It’s the spell. The reincarnation spell.” He carefully slips it into a pocket within his cloak. 
Then, there is nothing left on the table but two beautiful rings. One is dainty - the band is gold and twisted, leading to a gold setting that surrounds an oval moonstone. The other is weighty and masculine. A square moonstone sits in the center of the wide, green ring, bordered by golden leaves. 
To put these rings on would be momentous. Kate’s breath hitches, uncertain of what might happen. Sebastian weighs it in his mind. They are undoubtedly bound to each other, but placing the ring on her finger would feel like an engagement or marriage. Kate once told him that she wanted him to propose purposefully, after meeting her family. As he looks into his girlfriend’s bright blue eyes, there is no doubt in his mind that these are special items - beyond special - that will forever symbolize their connection and infinite loyalty to the other. As much as he wants to place the gorgeous ring on her finger, to impatiently propose here and now, he has learned his lesson. He knows this isn’t the right time. 
“My love, we should save these for each other. They are so precious,” Sebastian murmurs, opening her hand and placing the green and gold ring in her palm. Speaking so quietly, he is barely audible when he asks, “My sun, will you keep this ring safe for me?”
Kate closes her hand around it, nodding slowly. She does the same with the other ring, gently leaving it in Sebastian’s hand. She speaks softly as well. “And will you keep this safe for me, my moon?”
“Always,” he replies, touching his forehead to hers, “As long as is necessary.”

The cultural/racial/ethnic/socioeconomic backgrounds of the T7S gang, explained.
Donna: She's mostly Italian (northern), with a touch of Scottish. Having northern Italian roots, finding a fair amount of German blood (blame the Germanic hordes of the 6th century) is highly likely. Her paternal grandfather (near Rome) and maternal grandparents came from the Italian peasantry (near Venice), but her paternal grandmother's family was from Milan/descended from Scottish Catholic nobility, and was from old money. This is why Bob was tentatively accepted into Jack Burkhart's circle in season 1.
Eric: He's Irish and English through his dad, and Swedish through his mom. His mom's family, the Sigurdsons, settled in Wisconsin in the 1850s. His dad's family came around a bit later, in the 1890s, after residing in New York City for a bit (aka, they couldn't afford to move at first). On his Irish side, some of his ancestors definitely escaped from the potato famine, and there are definitely some protestant English colonists immigrating to Ireland mixed in there somewhere (hence the Forman surname).
Fez: His dad is largely native to Snake Island (a less snake-filled, larger version of the irl Snake Island), and his mother is a mix of Brazilian/Portuguese and Western European. The whole story is purposefully outlandish; read more here if you're interested.
Hyde: He's mostly African through his dad. It's complicated; most African Americans have an average of around 15-25% European blood, which is why they're lighter than their African counterparts. You can probably figure out why. His paternal grandfather and his family were survivors of the Tulsa race riots, and moved to Detroit shortly thereafter.
His mom's family is mostly Irish, and originally came from northern Appalachia, and were farmers and coal miners. Until his maternal grandfather, a royal piece of shit, started to float around the Rust Belt, with his family in tow. Bud was the one with the link to Point Place, simply.
Jackie: She's German, Dutch, and English through her dad. The German and Dutch ancestry is from old money, the latter settling in New Netherlands (before it became New York). Think discount Vanderbilt or Roosevelt vibes. The English is newer money, but they were descended from the Pilgrims (it's not uncommon for those with English ancestry). Her paternal grandparents moved to Point Place to oversee an expansion of the family's department store businesses (the new money), and Point Place is nestled between Kenosha and Milwaukee, so it made perfect sense.
Her maternal grandparents were Canadian (both French and English), but Pam was born in Madison. She had a sheltered childhood, and went to UW Milwaukee to find a husband (mostly). She met Dean the fireman, from Point Place, and later met Jack. Who is nineteen years her senior, so gross.
Kelso: He's a mix of Scottish, German, and English. His dad is Scottish, and is an only child who grew up in Kenosha. His mom is German and English (with the maiden name Casey), and grew up in Point Place. Her dad owned a toy shop.

My first experience purchasing jpop goods as an international fan (using CDJapan and DHL)
I already posted this on my old livejournal page last year, but I rarely use that website anymore and I'm more used to tumblr. Hopefully the people who might find these kinds of posts useful will still be able to find them here.
For some background, I became a fan of King & Prince in late 2022, but then 3 of their members announced that they would be leaving the group shortly after. It was then that I give in and decided to buy their latest CD release at the time.

Although I really wanted my own copies, I was very hesitant at first because I had never purchased physical goods internationally. Being from the Philippines, there were no options to buy them locally. I was worried about the shipping process because I was unsure of many things, like if there are other fees or customs requirements, and if it would be delivered straight to my address or if I still need to pick it up at a post office.
I saw this video which listed different websites to buy jpop goods from and gave more information about the whole buying and shipping process. It's very helpful, though it's from a few years back so I'm not sure if it's still up to date. I checked some of the sites mentioned and ultimately decided to buy from CDJapan since I had previously already heard of it and it seemed the most user-friendly.
I pre-ordered all 3 editions of the single, which also came with external bonus goods. The website had a discount code for first-time buyers which I made sure to use upon checking out. The currency the site uses is JPY, but it also displayed the amounts in my local currency, which made it easier for me.
They had a number of shipping options as well as a shipping cost calculator with other details for each method. I decided to go with DHL since it's guaranteed door-to-door delivery with full tracking. Although pricier than some other options, the shipping process was smooth and there were no extra fees. (Update: as of June 2024, they've started charging an additional fee of 430 PHP upon delivery)
Around a week before the expected release date, the order status on CDJ was already "in shipping process". Then 2 days before the release date, I received an SMS and email from DHL. I was a given a reference number and a link where I can track my package and choose to receive notifications at different steps of the shipping process. The estimated date of delivery was the next day (a day before the release date). There were also options in the link where I can change the delivery date or address, but I didn't try them.
I checked the tracking website often and there were periodic updates about where the package is and other customs-related info. The next day (the estimated delivery day) at around 10 AM, I received another SMS and email saying that the package is with a courier and will be delivered within the day. It arrived at around 5 PM. After giving my signature, I finally got it!
The discs and extra goods were all well-packaged and in good condition. The CDs and DVDs worked fine on my computer and I didn't need to install new programs to open them. I only listened to the songs using Windows Media Player and watched the videos using VLC. It's also possible to convert them to files using those programs.
Even though it costs a good amount of money, I thought this purchase was a very good first-time experience and I'm glad the process was as smooth as it could be.
After this, I bought a photo book along with more pre-order albums. The photo book came with its own box, so there was a recommendation to order them separately so the CDs can be packed more securely. But I did not want to pay for two separate packages, so I still ordered them together. I was able to get a small discount too using the points I got from my previous purchase. The package arrived a day before the expected release date again, and everything was still well packed and in good condition.
My only regret is that I didn't wait a little longer before placing the order. CDJ sometimes has promos and discount codes, so I was waiting for one before buying. But stocks for the photo book were running low, so I just decided to go ahead with the purchase. A few weeks later, I saw that they had a promo going on and that the photo books were restocked. Then again, I didn't know they would be restocked and I didn't want to risk not being able to buy it, so it is what it is! Would've been nice to get a bigger discount though.
I also had an experience ordering a CD just a few days before the release date. Unlike my previous orders, this one wasn't delivered earlier than the release date but arrived one day after, so it still wasn't bad at all.
I haven't tried any other online stores, but I'm happy with my experience with CDJ and DHL so far. The only drawbacks are that DHL can be more expensive compared to other shipping methods, and CD/album purchases on CDJ don't count towards the Japan charts as far as I know. I still use it since I like how straightforward it is, but of course it depends on what you prioritize.

Decent day, frustrating evening. Work was mellow enough that I was able sneak in a movie I've always wanted to watch: Klute, starring Jane Fonda in her first Oscar-winning role. I was compelled by the sad news that Fonda's co-star, the very fine Canadian actor Donald Sutherland, had passed away. Klute is flawed, though compelling, as a thriller; but it's dynamite as a showcase for the cast, director Alan J. Pakula and especially cinematographer Gordon Willis.
Following my workout (Leti again picked me up from the gym after her own workday), we decided to finally give Mimi a glimpse at one of the kittens we're sitting as a test of her tolerance. This resulted in Mimi growling and hissing at said kitten, plus pissing and shitting where she's not supposed to. So now we have our answer: no new pets until Mimi kicks the bucket.
Also frustrating: the Academy Museum didn't provide the promised 10% discount on our membership renewal. I hope they correct this without hassle when they read my email, which includes a link to the phone video I shot of my online renewal -- a precaution I took against exactly this kind of glitch, which was sadly unsurprising given their history of not being on the ball in ways large and small. But we love them in spite of their flaws.
I did a smidgen more writing today before watching the movie. But shortly before I left for the gym, BFF Jeff pinged me to ask if he should request time off in September for shooting the feature. I felt crappy about saying it won't be happening that soon after all. He was cool about it, but it was a real wake-up call regarding my lack of progress. I don't know why I'm so slow, not only regarding the movie but the podcast too. I should seriously consider giving myself a time card for each job.

Pennsylvania is a vibrant and diverse state with a mix of urban, suburban, and rural communities, with cosmopolitan urban centers in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh linked by lush farmlands and forests across the state. With its many institutions of higher education and its vast natural resources and outstanding outdoor recreation areas, Pennsylvania should be a booming population center in the Northeast. However, the major issues faced by the Commonwealth today and into the next decade revolve around population loss, especially in rural areas, oweing to the aging of the existing population and a brain drain of talent from the state. Looking at population projections from 2020 to 2050, the Center for Rural Pennsylvania projects an overall population increase of 1.6 percent, with growth located primarily in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Rural counties, on the other hand, are projected to continue to lose population. In addition, the existing rural counties will continue to age with those sixty-five and older far surpassing the number of residents under the age of twenty. The dependency ratio—the number of people not in the workforce compared to those in the workforce—continues to rise sharply. Most of this increase is due to the aging of the population.
Population loss and population aging contribute to the looming fiscal crisis for the Pennsylvania government. The structural deficit refers to the inability of Pennsylvania to raise sufficient revenues, through tax dollars or program fees, to meet the basic needs of its residents, including education and healthcare. Fewer people working results in fewer tax dollars. An aging population produces increased demands for public services, including long-term care, in-home care, healthcare, and transportation. A declining rural population also affects the viability of rural school districts and the makeup of the rural workforce. The Center for Rural Pennsylvania points to a graying of the rural workforce. The vast majority of rural counties exceed the state average for number of workers above the age of sixty-five. Contributing to the aging workforce is the persistent brain drain, which occurs when highly educated young residents leave the state shortly after completing their education. The brain drain rate for Pennsylvania has been around 20 percent for the past forty years. The bottom line is we are losing young residents and aging rapidly.
What are the solutions to these problems? Some ideas include marketing rural areas to newcomers with an emphasis on quality of life, pouring development dollars into Pennsylvania industries, and increasing efforts to bring university research to the marketplace. Other tactics include instating college promise programs to assist low income and minority students in attaining a college degree and increasing funding for vocational education, community colleges, and apprenticeships. All these ideas are meant to make Pennsylvania more attractive to current and potential residents and businesses. What about raising taxes? Pennsylvania does not tax pension income, making it a retirement haven. Could a controversial tax on higher income retirees present a solution to the structural deficit? Regardless, scholars and policymakers will continue to grapple with these issues for the foreseeable future.

As often happens, holiday sales got in the way of me getting this ecommerce news update published in a timely fashion, so please accept my apologies as you read the latest of the most important pieces in ecommerce over the past several weeks, including news from Etsy and other marketplaces, website builders, payment processing and shipping.

TOP NEWS & ARTICLES 
If you are in the US: the IRS has once again delayed  [Washington Post; gift link] the $600 threshold for receiving a 1099-K from online marketplaces and payment processors. The threshold will remain at $20,000 for the 2023 tax year, and will only drop to $5,000 for 2024. You can read the IRS announcement here. 
Etsy laid off 11% of its staff (225 people) in mid-December, due to stagnant sales on the site and an impending restructuring. It’s not yet clear what effect this will have on sellers in the long run. Further reading:

ICYMI, my coverage of the Etsy third quarter report, where I predicted they would need to make some changes in 2024. I was only a few weeks off. (or, perhaps more changes are coming…)
ETSY NEWS 
Sellers in Thailand, Ukraine, Japan, India, Chile, Argentina, and Peru can now use Etsy Payments, and must enroll by January 31, 2024 or else their shops will be suspended. (This is standard each time Etsy Payments is introduced in a new country.)
Anyone struggling to upload multiple documents to verify their identification or tax information on Etsy might benefit from this trick: combine all the documents into one file. 
Following up on the broken domestic pricing tool: Etsy is now refunding sellers for any sales that go through with the wrong price. (I’ve received several reports of this now.)
Etsy has been adding items to shoppers carts, usually items that were faved or even just viewed. They’ve also been adding coupon codes to shops’ backends, although I haven’t seen any reports of the codes being used. See threads here, and here, and here. So check your “Sales and Discounts” page just in case. 
Etsy’s bot takedowns continue; one shop got a counterfeit strike for using their own name in their listing. No one at Etsy will look at the facts and see how ridiculous this error is, so the listing remains deactivated for no good reason. [UPDATE: shortly after I published this, Etsy finally admitted the error and restored the listing.] Other legitimate shops continue to get listings taken down as well, and the Temu bot may be responsible for some of them. If any of your images show up on other sites, you are at risk of this problem, so make sure to pursue copyright infringement claims for photo theft elsewhere. 
But somehow, Etsy bots can’t take down the stuff that should be removed, namely deep-fake porn of celebrities. Forbes found a whole bunch [soft paywall]. One of the most notable things about this is that Etsy didn’t remove the listings that a lawyer contacted them about until 6 days later, when Forbes contacted Etsy about the story. I wrote more here. 
If you were thinking of signing up to use Square through your Etsy shop, now is the time, as they have a 6-month no fee offer for new users. Read carefully - there are lots of conditions! Then sign up using this link to get the offer.
Sellers in the US can now purchase UPS labels through Etsy. 
MIssing Etsy Check or Karen Check, and want a new place to look up Etsy buyer’s previous reviews? Koalanda has a free tool that will check customer review records from the beginning of 2022, which is a great way to do market research as well as look up current buyers before agreeing to do custom work etc. Beware it may be missing a few records; it doesn’t show feedback I left in 2022, for example.
Etsy quietly sent Israeli and Palestinian sellers a message letting them know that some October fees would be waived, and the rest will not be due until December. Oddly, during the third quarter earnings call CEO Josh Silverman said that all October fees would be covered, which cost Etsy around 1 million in lost income. They were told Star Seller badges from October will automatically roll over for November only; it's unclear if that was extended into December. 
Etsy’s colour for 2024 is “berry”, which they consider more “grown-up” than the shade of pink that trended most of the year. “[S]earches for hot pink decor items declined by 58%” in the past 3 months. Charms, denim and statement bathrooms are in, while gallery walls are already falling out of favour. Interesting piece on Etsy’s continued expansion into India. 
Etsy Support continues to get worse, with one seller told that flaws in Etsy tracking integration could only be fixed if the buyer confirms  via Etsy Messages that the order was received. This turned out to be incorrect, and Etsy later fixed the orders. 
Etsy signed the European Union's Digital Fairness Pledge, which is about buyer rights and consumer protections. More details on the pledge here.

ECOMMERCE NEWS, IDEAS, TRENDS (minus social media)
General
Michaels’ new handmade site Makerplace is out of beta, and is getting media attention. [soft paywall; Forbes] The marketplace allows buyers to return products to Michaels stores. They are definitely aiming for makers disenchanted with Etsy. “Our research found that nearly three in four makers believe there’s a void in the online marketplace landscape today, and that existing platforms come with pain points like high upfront costs, increasing fees for product listings and competition with an overflow of mass-produced goods.” 
Artisans Cooperative is holding their first board election January 22 to February 2, 2024. Candidates may submit applications to run from December 25 to January 12. 
Lots of retail companies are blaming Temu and Shein for lower sales recently. Etsy and The Gap are both quoted. [Soft paywall; Modern Retail] The former is losing money with this approach. “Temu makes a loss of around 30-35 percent on each US order, and an average of 40 percent on orders globally.” Temu is also cutting into dollar store sales, and is currently suing Shein for “intimidation tactics” against businesses that sell through Temu. Meanwhile, Shein has filed for their US IPO.
While the cost of ecommerce returns has grown, some companies are allowing buyers to keep lower-priced items, instead of spending more than the price to have them shipped back. 
Amazon
Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment fees are increasing next February, following most other carriers. 
Venmo will no longer be a payment option on Amazon, as of January 10. 
Amazon only places other ads at the bottom of Apple's pages, instead of higher up, after Apple asked the marketplace to remove other ads altogether. 
Zulily is the latest entity to accuse Amazon of illegal anti-competitive behaviour. One difference this time is that Zulily announced the business is closing just a week before. “In its complaint, Zulily said Amazon punished sellers who used both platforms, leading those merchants to raise their prices on Zulily’s website, take some products off Zulily or stop selling on Zulily altogether. In some cases, the sellers never contacted Zulily, the company alleged.In the span of one year, Zulily lost half of its sellers who sold on both Amazon and Zulily, according to the complaint."
Meanwhile, the FTC antitrust suit against Amazon probably won’t go to trial until mid-2026. Here’s more on the claims in that case. “Amazon executives acknowledged that these policies, which included requiring Amazon sellers to have the lowest prices online or risk consequences, had a “punitive aspect.” One executive pointed out that many sellers “live in constant fear” of being penalized by Amazon for not following the ever-changing pricing policy.” As well, “sponsored ads were often irrelevant to the initial search and caused “harm to consumers" and the overall experience on the site."
Like some other companies, Amazon sells many of its returned orders off in bulk for discount companies to resell. In Toronto, that included the original buyers’ private info.
eBay
eBay’s new Payment Terms of Use introduced several changes, including potentially longer holds for new sellers, and an admission they make interest on payment money and won’t give that to sellers. 
eBay had a slow third quarter, and didn’t predict the fourth Q would be any better. 
US sellers of patches, stickers, decals, greeting cards and seeds can now use eBay’s “standard envelope service”, for “items weighing up to 3 oz. and a quarter inch thick”.
There may be changes to eBay search early in 2024. 
I can’t wait to see how badly this goes for some: eBay releases AI tool for seller social media posts. 
Poshmark
Poshmark no longer operates in the UK, Australia and India, and plans on focusing on their markets in the US and Canada. 
Shopify
Shopify’s “marketplace” that has operated through the Shop app for a few years has now opened on the web. “Shopify would be the second-largest e-commerce retailer in the U.S. if all its merchants were treated as one”, but it doesn’t appear the website builder really wants to operate like that. 
There are lots of SEO guides for Shopify, but this one gets into a bit more technical detail, and includes optimizing your blog pages through Shopify, Google Shopping, and international page versions (Hreflang). 
Businesses using Shopify for their website pulled in $4.1 billion in sales on Black Friday 2023.
Squarespace
Squarespace got caught adding a setting that says individual site owners allow AI crawlers to use the site’s content - and they didn’t bother telling their customers. 
Walmart
Third-party sellers on Walmart can now use Shippo for labels, through a new integration. 
Walmart’s third quarter results beat expectations, but the stock dropped on short-term predictions of weaker sales based on the end of quarter performance. 
All Other Marketplaces
Some vintage sellers are moving to District.net, either joining other communities or starting their own. 
Bonanza moved to compulsory labels for most US-based sellers, and even though the company promised the lowest rates available, some sellers were not happy. 
Jane closed in mid-November, surprising businesses that sold on the site, who are apparently owed around $10 million. Lawsuits are possible. 
Spoonflower is changing how several things on the site work, including swatches, limits on new listings, and delisting “unpopular” items. 
All Other Website Builders
WooCommerce is now woo.com, which includes all of the company’s features, including the WordPress platform the payments system etc.  
Payment Processing
Businesses in the UK can now take payments through Square on their iPhones. 
US businesses using PayPal will no longer have seller protection for “Item Not Received" claims filed by buyers as chargeback claims with their card issuers, starting January 16, 2024. 
Buy Now Pay Later is still a thing, with Walmart Canada adding it as an option through Klarna, and Amazon Business choosing Affirm. 
Shipping 
Shipping label company Shippo has a new insurance that covers porch pirate thefts, but they don’t cover a lot of other things, including “Marring, chipping, denting, scratching”. The Canadian version doesn’t cover many common goods, including jewellery, antiques, art, glass, and ceramics. 
Amazon’s deal with USPS has flooded some small town and rural post offices in the US. [Washington Post; gift link] “Mail is getting backed up, sometimes for days, leaving local residents waiting for checks, credit card statements, health insurance documents and tax rebates. Routes meant to take eight or nine hours are stretching to 10 or 12. At least five carriers have quit, and the post office has banned scheduled sick days for the rest of the year, carriers say.” Delays are also reported around San Antonio, Texas. 
Wish is launching its own shipping service, which can be used for orders not made on Wish. Currently it will only be available for packages shipping from China to select countries.

The problem is shadow banning
I've said this a few times only.
The AI tools track what you say and sort out relevance, take out points when you say swear words, take out points when your video is too long, identify if your pictures are original or copyrighted, maps hashtags, and all of that influences on how you're going to be shown.
On Instagram, I have long videos, images from Pexels, a few swear words very occasionally and hashtags that might confuse to dissipate the categories which should be associated to my page.
It doesn't justify one of the best pedagogical materials in Brazil being hidden from public sight. They probably have a chain ranking, where my personal posts (or, to be frank, long posts) on LinkedIn might rank down, because apparently I'm against the rise of AI in educational practice while Microsoft is paying tens of billions for that kind of technology.
On Twitter, they banned my educational page because they found "the phone number was associated to a banned account", and that's where I told Jack Dorsey to f- off and got an immediate suspension.
So instead of focusing on how I wanna be able to talk to random people and insist that this is everything I'm asking for, I'll start talking about the technical aspects of everything they've done to shun down my outstanding social media presence and expose them. Maybe that will help.
Just so you understand: the course I offer has a price set to 50 real a one-hour class, once a week. That's a total of 6 months, with 24 classes and 12 themes we approach, throughout 300 pages of pedagogical material that I wrote myself and a lot of debate. One student will make me earn 200 bucks, in Brazilian real. Two, 400. Three, 600. It's enough to think I can manage 3. But it's also not impossible to think 10 people would be interested. 10 times 200 is 2000 real in my pocket, for 6 months. I would work 10 hours a week with something I enjoy thoroughly, that I produced carefully and in a very engaged manner. I would have to split classes, and serve 2 students a day, from Monday through Friday. If I wanted to "work for real", I'd work 8 hours (I've done more than that). With a 40 hour working week, I'd have 8000 real, but I don't think that's doable. It would make me change my life, but 40 people interested in a digital product with a schedule to be arranged is not realistic for me. For Facebook, it totally is. If I worked with groups, it totally would be. But that's how much I think I could handle: half of that, so I could have free time, with 4 people in a day, 5 days a week. 4000 real a month, for six months. I'd gather 24k, more than enough for a trip to the United States, my dream.
Facebook, X, Google, LinkedIn... these companies and their paying advertising customers are actively stopping that from happening. But the tech companies also implement rules that make my content less discoverable.
At least, if I worked with my own project, you know that I'd be making 200 bucks working 4 hours a month, with something I like, and without depending on shitty company policy and honestly, shitty people.
