NEW POST!
Short-Term Disability Insurance Is a Waste of Money… With Two Very Specific Exceptions
Here's an excerpt:
"In preparation for this article, I read a lot of stories from people who filed short-term disability insurance claims. I was dismayed but not surprised to see just how many people experience claim rejections.
As this ProPublica report explains, the claims rejection process is so murky it could easily be mistaken for a Rainbow Brite villain. On average, 20% of claims are rejected. But it’s often wildly erratic. One company rejected 66% of claims in one year, and 7% the next. And the sole arbiter of the claim is, of course, the insurance company itself. You know: the entity that has vast resources and a compelling financial interest in denying those claims?
HI, I DON’T LIKE THIS."

not to personal post but are any of y’all lawyers or knowledgeable on law?
all the other terrible, awful shit I have put up with from management aside, I recently realized that they have been underpaying me. not even just the past six months when I was promised a two dollar raise and they didn’t do it, but I realized I was being paid $21.58/hr when on my hiring letter it states I was hired at $22/hr
I did the math of what they would owe (including when they didn’t validate my promised raise) and they owe over $3,300
last week after I emailed management a few days later my boss met with me and told me they did underpay me “on accident” but that I was never going to get that money back
I now realize they have not only been underpaying me these last six months, but the almost two years I’ve worked here
I called the state legal aid org and they said they couldn’t help me and directed me to my state’s department of labor wage and hours division, and they said they can’t help either
we don’t have an HR that I can safely contact either. it’s either my boss (the owner) or her niece that does the paperwork and some admin
any advice or knowledge would be appreciated

Are you a video editor or smth? Did you have to get a degree for this or?
Yeah I’m a video editor or smth.
You don’t need a degree to be an editor, all you technically need is edit skills and a competent reel. However, employers like it when you do have a degree (especially if you’ve never worked in editing before), because it demonstrates that you’ve had experience working with deadlines, and with the constraints a brief. A lot of jobs will ask if you have a degree, and if not, for at least 2 years of relevant work experience.
In terms of actually learning editing though, you can just do an informal short course (which I recommend over learning through YouTube tutorials if you’re actually looking to work towards a career). They’re usually taught by freelancers who work in the industry, and can guide you on what specifically you will need to know for a job. They’ll give you more useful workflow best practises that companies like, which isn’t information you’ll necessarily find in YouTube tutorials. You will get to work with a brief and come out of it with something to put on a reel. And they are good networking opportunities! Students and tutors share job opportunities they find all the time. Same benefits of a degree, but much cheaper and less time consuming.
Short courses are also handy because they usually specify on certain softwares so you can learn for the type of job you want. Bear in mind it’s been about 4 years since I’ve had to look for a job, but at least when I was looking, the industry standard for traditional media (film/journalism/network programming) was Avid, although even back then you’d have to do a proper post production course to learn it cause no one else was arsed using it. New media companies usually go for Adobe softwares or Final Cut (but that one’s rarer). DaVinci’s editing software was fairly new when I was last job hunting, but people swear by it, so I imagine that’s a more common one now too. (It’s handy to know too bc it’s the industry standard for colour grading).
I would say the one thing a degree is useful for is that a lot of editing jobs are unfortunately not solely editing jobs. You might get lucky and find a company willing to hire you on your editing skill and train you up themselves on anything else they want you to know, but a lot of places are specifically looking for an editor/videographer, or an editor/graphic designer. More generalised media degrees are good to have for these jobs, because a lot of media courses encompass a lot of media elements besides editing, so you can say you have some experience in a number of things, even if it’s very little. Sometimes, knowing the basics is enough, and they’d be much happier taking you on and training you if they know you’re not starting from scratch. At the very least, I would always recommend anyone who wants to work in editing to learn how to operate some sort video camera manually, even if it’s just a shitty old DSLR.

the way we handle medical leave in the states even for people with good benefits is cruel
#the number of hoops i have to jump through. the way that my requirements for one surgery are apparently different from another surgery#even though there's nothing in the paperwork to indicate any need for that and the surgeries don't differ all that much#the way that they lost my initial letter and now i'm up against my deadline next week and they haven't even told me what day next week#so i'm worried that it's literally tomorrow#the way i am not receiving ANY pay for an entire month because of all the delays so i'm having to live off my savings#the way that every single person i've talked to has said something different about what is and isn't required#the way that for a lot of this i had to be navigating it while high on painkillers immediately post-surgery#the way that the group my employer contracts through has two different emails and names and flips between them constantly#the way that my healthcare provider does it differently than every other healthcare provider so i need special forms from them#instead of the leave group but then the leave group doesn't seem to accept the forms that they send#the way that the doctors office has seemed incredibly confused by my requests#the way that the ROI office told me they'd send over a completed form and never did#the way i literally don't even know who to call next to try and sort this out or if it's possible TO sort out#like i guess i'll call the leave group tomorrow and cry and beg for an extension. i guess i'll grovel bc it's the difference#of getting a few thousand dollars or not and i can't just be like oh well guess i won't get my short term disability pay#especially bc none of the hospitals have billed me yet and i'm getting scared bc i don't know what my ER bill is going to look like#bc they did xrays and a CT scan and they gave me a splint and a sling and a lot of drugs#so i do need the money. just sitting here like. idek what to do lmfao.#not tagging this bc i'm on desktop and i can't do the accent mark easily and idk where my phone is rn sorry

whoever is telling him what to do is actively trying to crash the economy.
my bets were on a large housing market and stock market crash in 2026-27 based on what my private broker was saying /against/ what both banks he works for say as "official public guidelines", but im giving it 6 months now.
i really don't wanna end up losing my job cause of this, cause this is hoover level bad policy.
i also think that's the only thing that'll get republicans to impeach him.... their portfolios crashing out.

I made the mistake of trying to offer advice to a GenZ government office girlie-pop about how her staunch belief of 100% honesty about every waking thing about her was never going to get her a job because office politics will eat her alive for it no matter where she goes and she just refuses to listen and thinks everyone else is wrong.
I hope she gets what she wants at some point, but I have my doubts and think she is going to be one of many of the most psychologically abused individuals in the workforce.

Omg and on top of it all I fuckin broke the straw off my water bottle so now I can’t,, drink water until I either get a new one or go buy a cup or plastic bottle of water and keep reusing that in the meantime. Didn’t want to do either of those things yesterday bc I was focused on Survival + my day had been fucked up enough I didn’t want another unexpected problem to fix.
The point of me sharing tho is I also need to find a new water bottle that’s dyspraxia accessible and i dunno where to look bc the one I broke was a (expensive) gift. And I wish nondyspraxics realized how hard it is to buy anything when all the little features make a difference in if you’re able to use it. You have one clumsy moment and now you’re like aw shit now I can’t Drink Water
#it sucked I had like finally taken all the steps I can for now regarding employment#and went to the pond which I’d planned to do hours before#enjoyed it for a good 10 mins in the sense of ‘my life is fucked but at least I’m not in a freezing cold room rn’#then proceeded to break my water bottle and start crying at the pond lol#and was like ‘man do I go check cvs or just kms’ which led to me calling the hotline#and I like woke up today being like ok things still suck but it’s a new day#I’m going to a fair and a concert w friends I haven’t seen in a while#and I like need a day in between today and yesterday tbh but I hope it will be fun#but I say that to say. I woke up and realized ah fuck I still can’t drink water#I can buy water at the fair at least but I should rly hydrate beforehand since I’ll be freaking moshing#my options are 1) go to a water fountain which only helps short term#2) buy a drink somewhere n reuse the cup which helps like. slightly more long term#or 3) go look for a water bottle today. which I rly don’t want to in this state#bc if I don’t find an accessible one I’ll be upset abt wasting more time#n then have to go be normal at the fair#so I think. I’m going w option 2#the thought processes u have to go thru every day when ur dyspraxic…#ALSO just now realizing I can’t take my pill without water#but I also only have 2 more pills left bc I don’t have insurance 👍🏻#luckily it’s not a pill that will have immediate affects from not taking it it’s more like a matter of months but yk#mine#txt#personal#vent post#suicide tw#(<- in tags)

Short-Term Disability Insurance Is a Waste of Money… With Two Very Specific Exceptions
Short-term disability insurance is an income insurance benefit you might get from your employer, your state, or a private insurance company. If you become too ill or injured to work, and your condition is covered, the insurance company will pay you a portion of your paycheck while you’re laid up.
Each policy is different. To give you an idea of what’s normal, an okay short-term disability insurance plan might pay out 50-60% of your former paycheck for a maximum period of 3-6 months. The most generous policy I’ve seen reimburses a full 100% of paychecks for 12 months. Some have a hard upper limit across all policies; I’ve seen $750 and $1,000 per week.
The only thing short-term disability insurance protects is your current income. Not your job, nor your future earnings, nor the actual health of your body. Understanding this is crucial to evaluating its worth.

Hi- er, this is my first-ever writer's strike, how does one not cross a picket line in this context? I know how not to do it with things like Amazon and IRL strikes, but how does it apply to media/streaming?
Hi, this is a great question, because it allows me to write about the difference between honoring a picket line and a boycott. (This is reminding me of the labor history podcast project that's lain fallow in my drafts folder for some time now...) In its simplest formulation, the difference between a picket line and a boycott is that a picket line targets an employer at the point of production (which involves us as workers), whereas a boycott targets an employer at the point of consumption (which involves us as consumers).
So in the case of the WGA strike, this means that at any company that is being struck by the WGA - I've seen Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Disney, Warner Brothers Discovery, NBC, Paramount, and Sony mentioned, but there may be more (check the WGA website and social media for a comprehensive list) - you do not cross a picket line, whether physical or virtual. This means you do not take a meeting with them, even if its a pre-existing project, you do not take phone calls or texts or emails or Slacks from their executives, you do not pitch them on a spec script you've written, and most of all you do not answer any job application.
Because if this strike is like any strike since the dawn of time, you will see the employers put out ads for short-term contracts that will be very lucrative, generally above union scale - because what they're paying for in addition to your labor is you breaking the picket line and damaging the strike - to anyone willing to scab against their fellow workers. GIven that one of the main issues of the WGA are the proliferation of short-term "mini rooms" whereby employers are hiring teams of writers to work overtime for a very short period, to the point where they can only really do the basics (a series outline, some "broken stories," and some scripts) and then have the showrunner redo everything on their lonesome, while not paying writers long-term pay and benefits, I would imagine we're going to see a lot of scab contracts being offered for these mini rooms.
But for most of us, unless we're actively working as writers in Hollywood, most of that isn't going to be particularly relevant to our day-to-day working lives. If you're not a professional or aspiring Hollywood writer, the important thing to remember honoring the picket line doesn't mean the same thing as a boycott. WGA West hasn't called on anyone to stop going to the movies or watching tv/streaming or to cancel their streaming subscriptions or anything like that. If and when that happens, WGA will go to some lengths to publicize that ask - and you should absolutely honor it if you can - so there will be little in the way of ambiguity as to what's going on.
That being said, one of the things that has happened in the past in other strikes is that well-intentioned people get it into their heads to essentially declare wildcat (i.e, unofficial and unsanctioned) boycotts. This kind of stuff comes from a good place, someone wanting to do more to support the cause and wanting to avoid morally contaminating themselves by associating with a struck company, but it can have negative effects on the workers and their unions. Wildcat boycotts can harm workers by reducing back-end pay and benefits they get from shows if that stuff is tied to the show's performance, and wildcat boycotts can hurt unions by damaging negotiations with employers that may or may not be going on.
The important thing to remember with all of this is that the strike is about them, not us. Part of being a good ally is remembering to let the workers' voices be heard first and prioritizing being a good listener and following their lead, rather than prioritizing our feelings.
