Like the asteroid that wiped the dinosaurs off the face of the Earth, nature or fortune has struck again, toppling another dinosaur: Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe. An eyesore by any definition, the struggling diner has held on for far too long, assaulting its patrons with its greasy food, bad service, and sub-par milkshakes. We can only hope that its charred remains will be swept away quickly, lost to the winds. No one was injured in last night's fire, which was called in around 9:30 p.m. Witnesses say the fire burned for nearly thirty minutes before the Riverdale Fire Department was able to arrive on the the scene. A very slow response time by anyone's standards. When the fire-crews did arrive, they found the structure completely engulfed in flames. The nearby gas lines located just outside the building made fighting the fire more difficult. The fire was finally under control and fire crews left the area just after midnight. Sheriff Tom Keller said his department is investigating and working to find a cause and origin of the blaze before determining whether the fire is suspicious. through many different ownerships but according to public records, Pop Tate is the current owner. The diner is currently run by his granddaughter, Tabitha Tate. Since its inception, Pop's diner has been the site of significant moments in Riverdale history. It was at the epicenter of Riverdale riots during the 1960s. In the late 1970s, there was an alleged UFO incident. People reported seeing a bright light appear over the sky outside the diner. And that the jukebox spontaneously began playing by itself. Most recently, it was the scene where Fred Andrews, former owner of Andrews Construction, was shot by the Black Hood. Followed by a robbery by a family in Serpent masks. It is estimated that the fire has caused in excess of fifty-thousand dollars worth of damage. It is still unclear whether the diner will re-open, given the severe financial straits Riverdale already finds itself in. Over the past year, Riverdale has seen it's [sic] fair share of fires. Some citizens believe that the fires that took place at Riverdale High, a private citizen's home, and to the Maple Groves may all be the work of a single arsonist.
