So today I finished Crime and Punishment, and i genuinely didn't expect an ending like this. it's odd, but it certainly feels right

It was a long, LONG 656 pages of suffering and bleakness, but the epilogue leaves the story with hope. something that was practically nonexistent throughout the entire novel. From raskolnikov's indifference yet persistent fear to sonya's own pointless suffering, hope didn't feel like a thing any of the characters could have- at least hope that wasn't blind and ignorant. it makes sense, this whole novel was related to the nihilism movement in russia at the time. I expected this book to have an ending that ended in despair that could have been cut short if raskolnikov had just ended it right after he committed the murders or at that bridge, but it didn't end that way. after so long of not looking ahead and not looking for more than what was, it finally happened. honestly that kind of punched me in the gut- in a good way

anyways this was a really good intro to dostoyevsky for me, and it was definitely worth while to read. im not very smart, so the messy analysis in my head probably isn't very accurate or useful, and there is definitely much more to be learned and analyzed in a political context. But it i enjoyed it! And i think that what i extracted from this is good enough. I'll look deeper, but i need to digest it lol. 10/10 would suffer again

-pretty much everybody is a two-time war veteran

-THE GOD APOLLO who just sometimes comes down to visit in the form of a teenage boy

-did i mention dionysus, god of wine madness and theatre

-also chiron, trainer of pretty much every greek hero ever
