Women's Suffrage Movement

The movement for women's suffrage took many decades to obtain voting rights. Women fought for their rights via smart political strategy. Dynamic leadership attracted several generations of women – mothers, daughters, and grandmothers formed national organizations and made alliances that brought women into the political sphere. The fight intensified during World War I due to women's work outside the home to help the war effort. Women now saw themselves as fully deserving of the same rights as men.

Purple, white, and gold were among the colors representing the movement. White dresses were worn by women as a representation of purity of thought and high-mindedness. Purple represented the vote and loyalty, constancy, and steadfastness. Gold stood for the torch that guides our way.

Not sure what to make of this 1961 Mid-century modern renovated home in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. It has 5bd. 4ba. $585K. I think that if you like swirly metal, you’ll like it. 

What a huge living room. It’s very light and airy with double mezzanines, marble floors and a fireplace.

I would imagine that the tree isn’t cemented into the floor. 

So, there’re stairs to the mezzanine with those wavy rails.

atTENTive Design

This past weekend, my wife and I attended Uprise, a Christian music festival in Shippensburg, PA. We camped for two nights, so I got to try out my new tent, the Wawona 6P from The North Face. It’s a luxurious tent—tall enough to stand up in with a doorway I don’t have to bend over to pass through, and at 86.11 square feet, it fit the REI Co-op Camp Dreamer Double Self-Inflating Deluxe Bed with room around it for our bags and stuff.

The tent has a number of thoughtful features, like air vents that prop open, plenty of internal pockets for storage, and a number of zippered flaps that can be rolled up to really air out the interior. The poles and trims are all color-coded to make setup simple, and it’s obvious a lot of careful thought and attention to detail went into the attachments.

Usually, the bag that holds the tent seems like an afterthought. They’re notorious for being too small to get a tent back into once it’s been unpacked, and they often are made cheaply, wearing out long before the tent. Not so with this tent bag. It was designed with the understanding that it needs to make it easy to get the tent back inside, yet shrink down to a reasonable size for transporting it. And it appears to be quite durable.

Of course, the part of the tent that really won me over was the vestibule. We can easily fit two camp chairs inside of it. It’s a covered front porch on a tent!

We used our previous tent for 28 years. We’re now in our fifties. This will likely be the last tent we buy. It’s perfect.

Rev. General Charles Calvin Rogers (September 6, 1929 – September 21, 1990) was an Army officer and a recipient of the highest military decoration in the US, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during the Vietnam War.

He joined the Army through the ROTC program at West Virginia State College, Institute, West Virginia, he was serving as a lieutenant colonel in command of 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam. On November 1, 1968, during Operation Toan Thang II, the 1/5th Artillery was manning Fire Support Base Rita near the Fishhook region of the Cambodian border when it came under heavy attack. He rallied his men in the defense of the base and, despite being several times wounded, continued to lead the battalion until the attack was repulsed. For his actions during the battle, he was nominated for the Medal of Honor. His nomination was approved and, on May 14, 1970, he and 11 other servicemen were presented with Medals of Honor by President Richard Nixon.

After recovering he attended the Army War College and received an MS from Shippensburg State College. He rose to the rank of major general before he left the army in 1984. He became a Baptist minister, serving troops stationed in Germany. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
