Favorite Ships Part 1 Discussion (1)
Shipping Poll Main Page · Full Ship List · Favorite Ships Results (Part 1) · Discussion (2)
Margin of Error
The margin of error for this poll is 6,7%, which means that the results I got might not represent the whole fandom. Moreover, it can render some of the results statistically insignificant. Consider the following table with the results accounting for the margin of error:
(The table on google sheets)
See how while Terridia received 12 votes and, say, Soryx got only one, according to my results, not only is it impossible to say whether Terridia is more popular as a favorite ship than Soryx, both results, at the end of the day, become statistically insignificant. Then again, Terridia can potentially be as popular or even more popular than Ruthari, while Ruthari is more popular than any ship after Terridia.
You can see below how Rayllum is the only ship with a certain placement in ranking and the rest can move up or down. The lines that have two colors are of ships that could switch places with the color above and the color below. The table features ships that got at least 5 votes:
Here's what we can say with certainty about the shipping preferences of our fandom:
Rayllum is most people's favorite ship.
Viravos and Janaya are just as likely to be people's favorite ship as Ruthari but are more likely than the rest of the ships.
Ruthari is just as likely to be people's favorite ship as both Viravos and Janaya, as well as Claaravos, Sorvus, Virrow or Terridia, but more likely than the rest of the ships.
So, realistically speaking, the ranking looks like this
Rank 1: Rayllum Ranks 2 and 3: Viravos, Janaya or Ruthari (i.e. any of these three can be number 2 as their highest rank, and Viravos and Janaya are unlikely to fall lower than 4) Rank 4: Viravos, Janaya, Ruthari, Claaravos, Sorvus, Virrow or Terridia (if Viravos or Janya are here, it means Ruthari is #2 or 3 and the other ships are automatically pushed to #5 or lower) Ranks 5 and 6: Ruthari, Claaravos, Sorvus, Virrow, Terridia, Claudium, Pyrren, Raydia or the rest of the ships (if Ruthari is here, it means Claaravos, Sorvus, Virrow or Terridia are at #4) Ranks 7 to 12: all the ships starting Claaravos, Sorvus, Virrow and down.
We can rewrite this table by the highest rank the ships can get:
Redistributing Polyship Votes
This one is tricky. Let's take Sorayllum as an example - some shippers will also ship Sorayla, Rayllum and Calren separately, some might only ship one or two of the three permutations, while others might only ship them as a trouple. However, if we assume, that a person who ships Sorayllum also ships the three couples that it implies, we can count a vote for Sorayllum as three separate votes, one for each couple it connects.
We had the following polyships (listed alphabetically):
Claarasef (Claudia x Aaravos x Kasef)
Laidriruthari (Lain x Tiadrin x Runaan x Ethari)
Rexavibeia (Rex Igneous x Avizandum x Zubeia)
Varrai (Viren x Harrow x Sarai)
Virdivos (Viren x Claudia x Aaravos)
Virrowvos (Viren x Harrow x Aaravos)
The votes for these ships where redistributed to the couple ships they're comprised of, with an exception of the cases when a person voted for both a polyship and one of its mono ship components, e.g. a Sorayllum shipper who voted for both Sorayllum and Sorayla.
So here's how that changed the rankings: Table on the right - the original rankings Table on the left - the rankings after vote redistribution Purple: ships that got additional votes Orange: polyships (excluded from the table on the left) Blue: ships that were created by splitting polyships into component but weren't voted for by shippers Red ship names: ships that fell in rank Black ship names: ships that didn't change rank Green ship names: ships that rose in rank
(This table on Google Sheets)
What we see is that changes are very small. Most ships that got extra points didn't even rise in rank (Virdia being the only ship that did). Claaravos cemented its position at #5, pushing Sorvus and Virrow to #6. Virdia rose from #10 to #9.
We can see that the margin of error changes are also quite small, with the only significant difference being that Claaravos is now essentially one vote away from being able to compete with Janaya for the third place.

Will Matt find out that Taniya dated Jamie? And When?
Oooh he definitely will find out about that! I’m not a fan of secrets and while Tanya has her reasons to not immediately burst out with that the moment she realizes Matt fancies Jamie, once she realizes that Matt has developed actual feelings for Jamie, beyond a crush, she is going to tell him the truth. ;)

Written for @azulaweek. Prompt - Friendship. (Thanks to @piandaoist for the screenshot!)
Summary: When you grow up in the Fire Palace, your friendships tend to come with ulterior motives. Sometimes they aren’t even your ulterior motives.
Slight warning for background Ozai being a controlling/manipulative parent.
Something more serious today. I had fun with this one, because it allowed me to pull in some of my OCs/headcanons.
~~~
Azula rarely visited her friends these days.
That wasn’t to say she rarely saw them - quite the opposite, in fact. Since Father had become Fire Lord, Mai and Ty Lee had practically become fixtures in the Fire Palace. Azula had needed the support of her friends after her mother’s mysterious disappearance and her father’s sudden rise to the throne, after all. And after the political upheaval had calmed down, well, Azula was of an age where it was important to start cultivating friendships that might benefit her later in life. So Mai and Ty Lee continued to be invited to the palace. Often.
Her friends had to come to her. It wasn’t often that Azula left the palace to visit them.
Mai didn’t care, because Mai didn’t seem to care about anything. She also claimed that the palace was less boring than her family’s home, so obviously she preferred spending her time there.
Ty Lee didn’t truly mind either, but she did seem more put out. “It’s a shame you can’t come visit my island. The coffee cherries are really good this year! But the juice doesn’t travel well.”
“Ty Lee, we’ve been over this,” Azula said. “I simply haven’t the time.” It wasn’t even a lie. Between her firebending training and her education at the Royal Fire Academy for Girls, Azula didn’t have much time to relax. More than Zuko, who had to work three times as hard just to stay almost-average - but still. Father expected absolute perfection, and Azula knew that almost would never be good enough. Zuko was proof of that.
Privately, however, she thought it was unfair. Lu Ten had had firebending training and army training and an education befitting the son of the Crown Prince, and he’d visited Kohimori Island often to see his friends. But shortly after Father’s coronation, Azula had learned not to request any visits to Kohimori herself. The last time she had, Father’s lips had thinned, his eyes had darkened, and he’d told her that as a princess she would do better to remain in the palace, where she belonged. Her friends, he’d said, ought to be honored to come visit her.
Ty Lee may very well be Azula’s friend now, but Ty Lee’s oldest sister and cousin had been Lu Ten’s friends first. The Kohimori Clan had been staunch supporters of Prince Iroh before Fire Lord Ozai’s sudden ascension to the throne. And as for Mai...well. Uncle’s wife had been from the House of Flying Daggers. Mai was a distant cousin to the late Princess Janya and Prince Lu Ten.
Azula hadn’t asked again if she could visit Ty Lee’s home island. She never even brought up Mai’s.
She went to Mai and Ty Lee’s houses in Caldera City occasionally, but more often than not they stayed behind the palace walls.
Today they were lazing in one of the gardens, the one directly below the Fire Lord’s office, and they were allegedly studying. Maybe Mai and Ty Lee were actually studying. Azula had never seen the point. She had a perfect memory, so she didn’t need to study, it was just a waste of time. So long as she did her required reading and listened to her instructors’ lectures, she would be able to recall her lessons with crystal clarity, and if other students needed to reread and pore over the same bits of information for hours, well, that certainly wasn’t her problem.
Her teachers at the Royal Fire Academy for Girls had been somewhat perturbed by this attitude, but they couldn’t argue with her academic performance. She had the highest marks in the entire school, let alone her own class. Upon seeing the results of her first year in classes, her teachers had all applauded her and her perfect grades - of course the Fire Princess would be so intelligent, of course she wouldn’t have to study, of course she was a brilliant young woman. More importantly, Father was pleased with Azula’s performance. The only professor who’d ever brought her concerns up to the Fire Lord and implied that Azula’s lack of study habits may be cause for concern had been shipped off to the colonies.
Azula had laughed when she’d heard that. It just proved her point. Her academic success came to her easily, and she saw no reason to study information she already knew when she could be working on her firebending instead.
Right now she was working on her firebending by manipulating the temperature of the little flame under the teapot.
“Azula!” Ty Lee complained. “You’re going to ruin the tea!”
Azula made the flame spit a few more times before she gave it up and swiped a cookie from the table the servants had laid out. “It’s a stupid drink, anyway. I’m surprised you even drink it. Doesn’t your clan supposedly grow the best coffee in the Fire Nation?”
“I would be drinking coffee cherry juice, if we had any,” Ty Lee said dejectedly. Then she perked up. “But Min says I’ll be old enough for coffee in a few years! I can’t wait!”
“I thought you said it tastes disgusting,” said Mai, glaring at her textbook like she wanted to stab it.
“It does, but Min says I’ll like it more when I’m older. And I can always add sugar to it!”
Azula and Mai exchanged glances at the thought of Ty Lee hyped up on caffeine and sugar.
“I don’t think I’d like it with sugar,” Mai said.
Azula snorted. “Clearly, you’re going to be one of those people who takes their coffee as black as their soul.”
“Mai’s soul isn’t black,” Ty Lee said, tilting her head. “It’s just a little gray and gloomy.”
“Mm-hm,” Azula said. “Is the tea ready?”
It was ready enough. Ty Lee poured it into cups. Azula sipped it and made a face. Tea never lived up to her expectations. Not that she knew what she expected from it, exactly. There’d been a time when she’d liked tea, she was sure, but that had been years ago.
Whatever. It was a stupid drink anyway. It had to be, if Uncle liked it so much.
Lu Ten had liked tea, too.
Azula suspected the last time she’d truly enjoyed tea had been when she was six. She also suspected if she asked Uncle to brew a pot, she’d enjoy it. She refused to entertain either notion for more than the split second it took to dismiss them.
Ty Lee sipped her tea. “I think it’s okay?” She had another sip. “It’s really not as good as Prin - General Iroh’s.”
Azula shot a look upwards, towards Father’s office window. It was empty. “Well of course it isn’t,” she huffed. “If His Royal Tea-Loving Kookiness put as much work into conquering as he does into his tea making, we wouldn’t have lost at Ba Sing Se.”
She meant the words to be mocking, but even as she said them, she could tell there was a heated edge to her voice. Ty Lee and Mai both blinked at her. Then Ty Lee nodded, and Mai shrugged.
Azula sipped her tea. It still tasted like disappointment.
“Oh, great,” Mai sighed suddenly, “my mother’s here.”
Azula looked to the far side of the garden, where Lady Michi was being escorted in by a servant. The woman practically floated over the grass. She always seemed perfectly at ease in the palace, Azula had noticed. Always happy to come take her daughter home instead of sending a servant to do it, always willing to pause and chat with whatever nobles or ministers were milling about the halls, always giving polite smiles and demure laughter and earnest small talk.
“Princess Azula,” Lady Michi said, bowing gracefully. “How are your studies going, girls?”
“Boring,” Mai proclaimed.
“We’re good,” Ty Lee smiled.
“I already know all this,” Azula said, gesturing at her history book. She’d read it earlier; there was no point in reading it again.
Lady Michi smiled. “Of course our princess would be an exemplary student,” she said, bowing again. “Mai, dinner will be ready in an hour. Be ready to go by then.”
“Yes, Mother,” Mai sighed.
Lady Michi nodded and glanced around the garden. “Oh,” she said, “there’s Lady Hiromi!”
Ty Lee and Azula followed her gaze and found Ty Lee’s mother standing under the covered walkway that bordered the garden. Ty Lee’s oldest sister was with her.
“I’ll just go say hello,” Lady Michi said, swanning across the lawn.
Mai sighed again. “Guess I’ll be going home soon,” she said.
“Oh please, your mother is going to take a whole hour to mingle before she leaves,” Azula scoffed. She watched Lady Michi greet Ty Lee’s mother and sister, and the women started chatting quietly. Lady Michi’s voice was light and airy, but the other two kept theirs lower, demure. While Mai’s mother was perfectly happy to be in the palace, Lady Hiromi and Lady Min Lee always seemed ill at ease - they didn’t make a point to stop and speak to everyone they met, and they never stayed longer than necessary.
There’d been a time when Lady Min Lee had spent entire days in the palace. Azula could remember her running around with Lu Ten, or studying with him in this very garden just as Azula now did with Mai and Ty Lee.
As though sensing her thoughts, Lady Min Lee glanced away from Lady Michi to look at the girls in the garden. Azula stared back at her. Mai didn’t bother looking up. Ty Lee raised a hand and waved at her sister.
Lady Min Lee smiled, removed one of her hands from her perfectly-enfolded sleeves, and gave a little wave back.
Ty Lee beamed.
But then Lady Min Lee’s smile went stiff, and a moment later Azula saw why - Uncle came strolling down the walkway, Zuko trailing after him. Uncle was smiling indulgently at whatever Zuko was prattling about - probably something stupid and useless. They were headed in the direction that would take them towards the training grounds though, so maybe Uncle was actually going to do something useful for once and Zuko might actually learn something. Uncle’s face turned from Zuko to look ahead, and neither his step nor his expression faltered when he saw the noblewomen conversing on the walkway.
Lady Min Lee and Lady Hiromi both turned directly to Lady Michi - who, despite her love of chatting up every politician in the palace, didn’t even glance in Uncle’s direction. All three women became absolutely engrossed in their conversation - something about someone’s prized hibiscus bushes somewhere - and as Uncle and Zuko walked past them, they didn’t even give Uncle a glance. Uncle gave no indication he’d even seen them, aside from the fact that he didn’t walk right into them. He passed them by without so much as a hello, and they let him leave without even making eye contact.
Zuko didn’t seem to notice the women either, but that was probably because Zuko was an oblivious idiot.
Azula felt a prickle on her neck, and she casually glanced back up towards the Fire Lord’s office - only with her eyes, not her whole head. Father stood there, framed in the window, and he was watching Uncle and Zuko walk away, his eyes tracking them until they rounded the corner and were out of sight. Then he looked to Lady Michi and Lady Hiromi and Lady Min Lee. If the women were aware of his attention, they didn’t show it - they just kept chattering as Uncle and Zuko’s footsteps faded away. Father’s gaze moved to Mai and Ty Lee next, considering.
Azula turned her attention back to her friends before her father’s eyes fell on her.
Author’s Notes
Thanks for reading! Kudos and comments are always greatly appreciated. ^_^
For anyone who's read my other works concerning Ty Lee's family, I hope you appreciated this post-Azulon look at their current political situation, ahaha.
Mai's family isn't in as much trouble for a few reasons - Ozai actually liked his sister-in-law, she's been dead for decades, she was from a cadet branch of her family instead of the lead, and that lead branch was pretty quick to accept Ozai as their new overlord. (Sidenote: When Zuko becomes Fire Lord, my Ukano and Michi are pretty quick to accept him as their new overlord too. Those two are happy to float wherever the wind takes them, and if it takes them to their daughter becoming Fire Lady, WELL, they certainly aren't looking THAT gift ostrich-horse in the mouth. I've always thought that Zuko's in-laws would be a major stabilizing force early on in his reign. The comics haven't changed my mind on this.)
Regarding Azula and her study habits - I pretty much read Azula's arc as that of a "gifted child." It's the same old story - kid who happens to have a good memory and acute book smarts (and possibly undiagnosed ADHD/Autism/Something) gets hailed as a little genius, gets easy A's without trying, the adults in their life figure the end justifies the means and are just proud to have a smart kid, said kid never builds up study skills or gains an understanding of how effort works, hits a point in their life where "being smart" isn't what they need to accomplish their goals, cannot comprehend this new reality they find themselves in and proceed to fall apart and assume they peaked as a teenager while all the adults in their life say things like "you had so much potential."
Zuko claims that "everything comes easy" to Azula, and while I believe he's a slightly unreliable narrator there due to childhood jealousy, I do think he isn't exaggerating much. Azula probably did put a lot of effort into certain things - her Firebending, for one thing, we see her training lightningbending and working hard to get it right - but it really does come naturally and she learns quick so it doesn't take as much effort as it does for Zuko. In other things, such as her schoolwork, I've decided Azula barely puts any effort in at all and still comes out on top. And life works out great for her......until it doesn't.
𝑴𝑬𝑻𝑨 01: 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑼𝑵𝑫𝑬𝑹𝑮𝑹𝑶𝑼𝑵𝑫
the black market seraphina works, fondly named “the underground,” is comprised of three groups of people: vendors, suppliers, and the council. they work inside &* outside of the space itself, but each role remains extremely important to the underground actually functioning within its means. NOTE: if one of these groups were to be dismantled, the balance would become way off &* there would be an excess amount of bloodshed within that community. below i’ll talk a bit about their roles ( though they’re fairly obvious ) & briefly list some people who work them.
THE * VENDORS
➙ the vendors, as obvious to their names, keep the market going at the most basic level: selling their stock, making money that goes both to them &* to the underground. the underground currently holds about 200 vendors &* stores as of current, with their names usually tailored towards the customer of choice ( vamps-r-us, 1-800-ZOMBIEBRAINZ, smoke[ing] and apparitions, just to give a few ) or just general dollar stores &* grocers for those who prefer a diverse ( or are omnivorous ) palate. this role depends on the suppliers, and so those who run vendors are usually cruel to them ––––– when the suppliers don’t deliver, their vendors fail &* their existence in the underground is questioned by those above. most of the vendors are owned by older creatures, having been in the family for centuries or longer. VENDORS ARE THE FIRST TO REPORT THEFT, a little too much pride in how much they’re selling for &* for how much lower than anyone else. some vendors who work are:
𝚅𝙰𝙻𝙴𝚁𝙸𝙴 𝙻𝙰’𝙶𝚁𝙰𝚈: an older ( actual ) vampire who’s been around for way too long, but she stopped aging in her thirties. she’s made of solid silver, her teeth replaced with actual ivory. she’s wealthy, full - stop. her shop runs vampire - exclusive house + personal ware, such as fang warmers, vampire - friendly sex toys, human - blood substitute for those allergic – your own much tinier kroger/aldis/walmart ! she’s been in the underground for centuries, her shop’s name 𝐅𝐀𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐘 𝐕𝐀𝐌𝐏𝐈𝐑𝐄 a household staple !
𝙿𝙰𝚄𝙻 ( " 𝚂𝚄𝙽𝚂𝙷𝙸𝙽𝙴 " ) 𝙼𝙾𝚁𝚃𝙾𝙽: some folks in the underground call this wolf - of - a - man an absolute delight!!! to have around, but he’s anything but that. he’s spoiled rotten, being the inheritor of his all - including vending shop ( &* chain stores ! ) funded &* founded by two pull - yourself - up werewolves, his family holding the title of oldest werewolf walk - in as of current. the ladies love him &* their boyfriends hate him, but they’ll be damned if they say something against him !
𝙹𝙴𝚁𝙴𝙼𝚈 𝚂𝙸𝙻𝚅𝙰: a reanimated corpse that’s been in the underground for going on two decades, he showed up out of the blue &* refused to leave, so the council allowed him to stay –––– and he’s not being removed ! no one knows what’s in his shop, it doesn’t have a name ( or one they haven’t heard ) but people always leave satisfied, though they’re unable to describe their experiences.
THE * SUPPLIERS
➙ the suppliers, once again obvious in their name, work mainly alongside ( for. ) the shops that sell fresh produce or have any type of beef with any other vendor. they supply produce &* in some cases ( in the past, ) meat, working to keep their vendors open &* active, delivering the best of the best all the time. most of the suppliers are human beings who have become disinterested in humanity &* show no attachment to them. othertimes, it’s younger ghouls who are just starting out in the working world, or the creatures who want a fast - paced, more violent occupation. some suppliers are:
𝙻𝙴𝙸𝚂 𝙵𝚁𝙰𝙳𝙾𝚁: a human being who’s decided to live among the supernatural, he works extensively with a cross - bow. most of his produce goes to the much smaller companies selling meat, but the meat is never the best quality. he’s nearing his own time, however, but plans on purchasing a few ingredients for an aging potion.
𝙳𝙴𝚂𝙰𝙽𝙶𝙴 𝙳𝙸𝙰: an oracle seraphina had a short - lived fling with, desange supplies holistic materials &* spiritual things for the witch &* apothecary vendors. her work is well sought out, and she gives her own readings to whoever wants them, for a very reasonable price ( the weight of your questions ).
THE * HIGH * COUNCIL
➙ the high council, or those who founded the underground at its beginning. comprised exclusively of five members, four of which are original members, they oversee the underground &* make sure everyone is in their rightful place. without them, there is no underground. they hold meetings weekly, and reviews happen bi - monthly, just to keep a tight ship &* keep everyone paranoid. NOTE: seraphina is not one of the original members; her spot was given to her in the will of the last vampire who was killed by a human. most of the other vampires are angry at this, but she reigns third - in - command on the council. i will only be listing two of the members, but i will not give any more than a simple description of them, as they will be getting their own metas eventually.
𝙰𝙼𝙼𝙰𝙳𝙴𝚄𝚂 𝙵𝙾𝚄𝚂: an older vampire, head of the council &* the final sayer-so. whatever he says, goes. he’s got a wife at home, two vampire children &* zero room for bullshit. he is not a fan of S. taking the reigns sometimes &* he wishes to knock seraphina from her post as third in command. a stickler for tradition, he is raising his children to take over his post as head of the council, and has graduated from vendor to actual store. his store &* restaurants have chains only visible to supernatural creatures, and he caters to everyone, with an emphasis on vampire cuisine &* delicacies.
𝚂.: no one knows if S. is human or not, nor does anyone actually know who they are. never visibly present at meetings but always there, S. communicates through an external speaker &* assistant, miss janya moray. they are second in command, but even ammadeus is afraid of them, so they act as if they’re the head. whenever they do come around, their face is obscured by a mask. their entire body is made out of metal &* flesh, some parts of their head covered in brain - matter that is frozen solid. when they do speak as just themselves, their voice is almost mechanical.
#meta. tbt.#THE HEAD * : who am i? i am the world; i am the divine. ( 𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒐𝒏 ‚ )#my first meta omg....#its so text heavy .. but thats easier for //me// specifically to keep my thoughts in order! but for the next one i will incorporate a gra#graphic** because it //does// introduce some npcs who are integral to seraphina's story.#what happened is that i stopped doing icons halfway. i rly hate doing icons kjsdkf#seraphina is third in command. really second in command.#her business as a meat vendor.. and her own supplier.. means she has such a deep foot in this business.#she depends on no one; unlike others who need an outside supplier for their shops; but she's Different.#and her meat is freshly caught and available and ready; she's literally almost always sold out; and any leftover meat goes to homeless#vampires and carnivores; those with hungry animals and dogs.#BUT YAY MY FIRST META
Yamato (男たちの大和, Otoko-tachi no Yamato) by Junya Satō - 2005
I became a passionate admirer of Japanese cinema, but I'm basically interested into so-called Golden Age of the films in Japan, related with names of Yasujiro Ozu, Kenji Mizoguchi, Mikio Naruse, Akira Kurosawa, Masaki Kobayashi, Tadashi Imai, and other directors. However, seeing nothing of new Japanese films remains an oversight for me. Since I wanted to prescind from the classical Japanese films I'm used to, I decided to watch a film about World War II Yamato (2005).
The film is dedicated to the last sail and fight of the Japanese battleship Yamato. Along with her sister ship Musashi, Yamato was the heaviest and most armed battleship in history. The events of the films tell the brief story of Yamato from commission till the date the battleship had met her demise. Yamato means "Great harmony" translating it literally from Japanese. Her last sail was one of the last features to complete this picture of violent, bloody and brave harmony surrounding the Japanese Imperial Fleet and army in general. Yamato was the last surviving Japanese battleship during World War II. Her participation in Battle for Okinawa and Operation Ten-Go was, in fact, a kamikaze raid to become the final Japanese naval operation.
This feature film directed by Janya Sato is important for two reasons. First, it gives us a room to rediscover the different historical events of World War IIfrom - from the Japanese perspective. There are quite a few important events and names being mentioned - it's good to dig into this page of the world's history. Secondly, we may think a little more about some motifs and reasons behind the war such as the economic blockade of Japan, the Japanese race for the oil and colonization. This movie gives a very good glimpse into the life of marines during the War, on how propaganda affected them and what was the meaning of honour and patriotism for these young men. Yet, we would see many irritating things on the screen while watching Yamato.
To begin with, Yamato is made with respect to Hollywood blockbusters of similar type. There are huge loads of pathos in actions, conversations, and events taking place here. We see almost Hollywood-like protagonists with Japanese faces. It's hard to define the proper reasons for them to fight and die this way. This pathos doesn't show the mentality of Japanese people correctly, from my point of view. They were forced to die, but showing it this way with melodramatic heroism is a bit ridiculous. I remember some Ozu's protagonists talking about the war, for example in The End of Summer. They had no illusions and pathos, being very modest talking about the war. Though, one of the protagonists in that film was a captain of the warship himself. And I think Ozu's way to depict it was more precise.
Yamato by Janya Sato is way too sentimental. We would be seeing dramatic scenes with the protagonists going to war, kissing goodbyes to their families, spending time in rumination watching sakura blooming. They talk with too much pathos. Again, comparing with some old movies where people were talking about the war and necessity to die, this is very different. Thoughts about Until We Meet Again by Tadashi Imai or Kurosawa's No Regrets For Our Youth remind of the modest or knowledgeable ways the Japanese were taking this bloody war. The protagonists of Yamato happen to be very furious defenders of honor and their county, and watching them falling down is a bit weird and unrealistic. The reality was much more violent, and I don’t believe the way we see in this film. From my point of view, the marines simply had no choice but to sail which explains why there were many teenagers on a heavy battleship. Provided no choice, they were ought to sacrifice. Falling victims of insane propaganda, they have not been giving up to commit suicides instead. To me, it doesn't really show the national mentality, it's more about the result of propaganda and yield the Japanese regime driven by radical militarists' doctrine had received.
While watching Yamato, I was thinking a lot about my favourite film about war Apocalypse Now. With no trace of heartbreaking drama, it was showing the war from the deep inside. The emptiness of this insanity soaking in people's madness, horror, violence is what we have seen in Apocalypse Now in the most realistic way ever. There was no single hero, good or bad guy in that film. There was no explanation to sacrifices and acts of war. It was just showing the dehumanization in a very precise way. After seeing all that, we could ruminate who had been driving this war in Vietnam for so many years and why?
Yamato is very different, as it is made as a blockbuster. It targets the basic human feelings and emotions making us cry about the young boys dying. All-in-all, it is saying that the war is awful and dreadful - yet we all know that. It doesn't operate with very deep and sublime reasons as Apocalypse Now used to do. This is a movie to enjoy the action scenes, to learn about the life of marines and to fill gaps in our view on the world's history. That's it, there is nothing much remaining! Nevertheless, I was watching it with excitement as I had received many important historical notions and reasons to read more about the history of war and Japan. In the movie of this type, there is no need to say anything about acting (with exception of Kenichi Matsuyama whose works are always quite impressive and excelling) or camera work. Though, Yamato strikes with cool effects making the battle scenes quite epic! Just like Hollywood filmmakers used to do.
If Iroh leaves Nanyue to offer aid to his brother, do the other high ranked military people in Nanyue remain there or.. Follow him?
Ozai stalked off his ship and down to the dock, practically fuming. He refused to turn around to survey the damage. Who could have thought a mere child capable of such destruction?
At least they were in port now, where they could get repairs and stop worrying about things like the hull giving out and the entire ship taking them to the bottom of the icy sea. Ozai was more than willing to turn the mess over to the shipwrights in favor of going to plan his next move. He needed a new ship and a cup of coffee and to check and see if there was another letter from Ursa -
Someone whistled. “What happened to your ship?”
Ozai whirled around to find the speaker. “Zhao?” The other teen was staring up at what was left of Ozai’s ship, looking grudgingly impressed. He was a bit taller than he’d been when they’d last met, and the sides of his face had sprouted a poor excuse for sideburns, but it was Zhao alright.
And if Zhao was here, that meant Admiral Jeong Jeong wasn’t far behind, and where Jeong Jeong was
“Brother!”
…Iroh was bound to be there, too.
“What are you doing here?” the younger prince demanded. Last he’d heard, Iroh had been making arrangements to wipe Nanyue off the map.
“I came as soon as I heard the news!” Iroh answered. “I am not going to let my little brother go up against the Avatar alone!”
Ozai stared at him. “What?”
“I’m here to help! Together, we will hunt down the Avatar and put an end to the greatest threat against our nation!” Iroh looked way too pleased with himself, the way he did when he swapped Ozai’s coffee beans out for tea leaves, or when he thought he’d managed to trick Ozai into babysitting Lu Ten.
“What? No!” Ozai snapped. “This is my mission! You can’t just cut in!”
“It’s not a mission, it’s a coming-of-age trip that’s turned out to be more than we thought it would be,” Iroh said flatly. “Also, it’s the Avatar. The Fire Nation’s number one enemy. Your sister-in-law would kill me if I left you on your own against him!”
“Janya needs to realize that I can handle myself,” Ozai grumbled. He noticed that Zhao was politely staring at something that was not him or his brother, but was doing a poor job of hiding his insufferable smirking.
“Oh, don’t worry brother, I’ll let you handle yourself - with supervision!”
“Ugh.”
“Whenever you two are done with your fraternal bickering, the tea’s ready.”
Ozai looked away from Iroh to see that Zhao had been joined by Admiral Jeong Jeong, who was looking between Iroh and Ozai with a completely unamused look.
“Excellent!” Iroh beamed. “Come, brother, we must go strategize!”
Ozai glowered at Iroh’s retreating back. “What kind of tea?”
“Ginseng,” Jeong Jeong said. At Ozai’s groan, he added, “The coffee is ready as well.”
“Admiral,” Ozai said, “you are a gift to this world.” And he headed after Iroh.
Behind him, he heard Jeong Jeong stop Zhao. “You are going to go to the top of that watchtower and work on your breathing exercises.”
“What?! But that’s all I did all morning!”
“It takes a long time to learn patience.”
Ozai smirked to himself as Zhao grumbled away. Iroh looked over his shoulder, saw what he assumed was his little brother in a good mood, and grinned. “Do not worry, brother! Together, we’ll find a way to defeat the Avatar! I’m going to need you to tell me everything about your encounter with the old menace.”
“Well, to begin with,” Ozai said, “he’s twelve.”
Iroh stopped in his steps and turned around, blinking. “Twelve?”
“From what I understand there was a magic iceberg involved.”
Iroh looked from Ozai back to the ruin of his ship. “A twelve year old did that?”
“Completely unsurprising,” Jeong Jeong hummed as he caught up with them. “Even twelve-year-olds can be destructive forces, given their lack of control. You should’ve seen the messes Zhao was making before I took him as my student.”
“Well, no matter,” Iroh said. “We have two Fire Princes, Admiral Jeong Jeong, and an entire fleet of Imperial-class ships! We’ll defeat the Avatar, I’m sure of it!”
“If you’re all here,” Ozai said, “who’s invading Nanyue?”
“The Avatar is our priority.”
“So…no one then.”
“We have troops stationed to monitor the situation and combat anything that might happen, but for now the Trungs are keeping quiet and the Avatar is the main threat.”
“Does Father know we’re procrastinating on Nanyue again?”
“I’m sure he’ll agree with my reasoning whenever he learns of it.”
Iroh for the character tag!
Thank you for the ask!! Wow, I wrote a bit, heheh
How I feel about this character: I love Iroh. He's my favourite character, honestly. I feel guilty because everyone loves the gaang, but I... Iroh's character really got me. His storyline is the one that made me emotional the most, he's great. I hope I'll get to esplore his character during the comic too, even if it's not about him. I want to show his character arc, how he went from an entitled general to a better person, even if someone who still has to learn a lot from life and has many contradictions.
All the people I ship this character with: I don’t ship Iroh with anyone. Well, maybe Janya from @caelum-blue's verse. But despite the nice headcanon i saw going around that Iroh might be ace, I don’t think he is, he’s too flirty (and... creepy too sometimes) through the series. At first I wanted to answer with “Ummh who would ship Iroh-” but then my coscience started screaming about my hypocrisy so uh. Umh.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: okay, so, I always incredibly love family relationships. And I love Iroh and Zuko's father-son relationship. So I'd say that one. Fun fact: despite being a Jeong Jeong Bitch(tm) right now, when I first saw Avatar, I really loved Zuko; I was in a particular moment in my life, I was having a lot of difficulties with my parents, and seeing that relationship really got me. I stopped loving Zuko after a while, but Iroh remained.
My unpopular opinion about this character: I disagree with the fandom's interpretation of Iroh's character. I think he's actually much more flawed than people give him credit for. He's selfish, and he is a war criminal. I really like the concept of having a second chance in life, and him redeeming himself and having a character arc, but in the end he still... did some entitled things. As said below, him going to live in Ba Sing Se is just very sketchy. ...but I'll talk about this in the comic too ;)
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: mmmMMMMMM finding his son I think. Finding out if Lu Ten is alive or not, as Koh's faces gave me a suspect. That, or seeing Iroh coming back to the Fire Nation and supporting his nephew instead of opening a tea shop in a city he sieged for 600 days and undoubtedly ruined many citizen's lives killing their loved ones.
