Guys I think there's something wrong with my copy of Mouthwashing what is this

So there's a mobile version of Mouthwashing that you can download and it's so bad but for some reason I've grown obsessed with it. Not for the bit, genuinely into it. So I gave my own twist on the character designs to make them distinguishable enough(Also some tiny side drawings while making this)

i touch on anya and nurse here but i also have an idea of shinsuke and co-captain jim… not sure about swanz or captain yet but we’re getting there

anya and shinsuke bond over daisuke (coming from @blimbo-buddy’s idea of them being cousins) (im also using their mobilewashing designs) and how he was in both of their lives. while daisuke was only present for a short amount of time in anya’s, she can see how he affected other people and how he was ultimately a good person in the end .

co-captain jim, when finding out about it somehow, does feel for anya’s hesitance and slight fear (? Sort of but im pretty sure there’s a better word for this). like, he’s an asshole but he’s not a total monster, y’know. not like jimmy was anyways. he’s willing to understand because, what the fuck do you mean he crashed the ship and blamed it on the captain? WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE TRIED KILLING EVERYONE ELSE ON THE SHIP?

also this is ridley jones or wilby jones. nurse and anya haven’t decided over it yet. shes their pride and joy and she loves running into walls and screaming at sticks

they also later adopted another cat who turned out to be riddles’ mother. nurse named her mama cat

Thought of some little facts for the characters in the Mobilewashing rewrite. Some of these may or may not be changed

Nobody knows Nurse’s real name. Not even Captain knows, somehow. When she got her employee card printed out there was an error and all that came out was “Nurse”, she made them give the card to her. If you ask her what her name is she just tells you “I am a nurse, you know me as a nurse, so I am Nurse to you.” 

Swanz has been divorced for nearly 10 years, but him and his ex-wife wanted to try and discuss everything and hopefully try again now that he’d been sober for a long while now and doing better. Swanz is also not his real name

Shinsuke has a cousin from the West coast who is younger than him by 3 hours. They both started their internship around the same time too! Shinsuke forgot the name of the company his cousin works for though… something about a horse mascot?

Jim Co-Pilot’s real name is Jameson but he refuses to go by it, opting for the hundreds of annoying nicknames given to him. Anger management stress toys also never work for him, they always end up popped or shredded or completely destroyed

Captain is so, so very Australian and considers [Company Name] (An Australian company) to be his pride and joy as a fellow Australian. He also managed to get Swanz a position at the company as a ship mechanic since he knew him for some time

Mobilewashing Character Rewrite Fun Facts Part 2 (View Part 1 here):

Nurse

Despite her buff appearance, she actually doesn’t care for working out as a hobby, it’s more of a way to get her energy out

Many aspects of her character (especially design) were based on Sigourney Weaver’s role as Ellen Ripley

She’s had multiple hobbies and jobs in the past but found joy in none of them

It’s not uncommon for her to skip a meal on accident, she gets very into her tasks

She wants to try getting into fishing after this shipment haul

Swanz

He hates the taste of alcohol and would much rather drink virgin cocktails/margaritas

After the divorce, he lived in his car for some time before meeting Captain

He’s owned the same pair of sneakers for the last 12 years. He takes good care of them though

Birds are his favorite animal

His decision to go sober came after an opioid overdose

Often kept an eye on by the medical staff of the freighter

Shinsuke

His spice tolerance is through the roof, it’s only fitting that his favorite foods are all spicy

He got his earrings after purposefully losing a bet

The fingerless gloves he wears lets him chew his fingernails easier. Nurse hates this

Solving puzzles is his favorite pastime, he brought plenty of puzzle games/toys with him onto the ship

He begged his parents for a mechanic internship at the company because he loves mechanical stuff. They were anxious about it but eventually let him apply

Jim Co-Pilot

He’s banned from his local gym for batting someone in the ribs with a pull-down bar

Cowboy western movies and shows are his favorite

He wants to save up for some nice cowboy boots since his current pair are shitty ones

The sight of any sort of injuries makes him feel sick, bruises are the worst for him (he’s thrown up at least one time during each haul because of this)

He’s really trying his best to manage his anger issues and has been given various pamphlets, magazines, music, etc. to help control it

Wait I got one more post before I hop off. Got a growing song list for my Mobilewashing AU that does not take good song/tonal transitions in mind because these were added as I went

Once I start developing the other characters in the au they'll be added too

Some of these have a deeper meaning (Mainly for the characters) but also there's ones that I felt just fit based on vibe

Mobilewashing could have been about the new artificial intelligence that has started to become implemented into freighter ships to replace regular workers, only for things to get fucked up when the "ai captain" redirects the ship off course. And the whole time during being stranded it's just the ai voices talking to each other also Shinsuke should be the only human on that ship because you gotta at least have a backup mechanic in the flesh

Ough just wanted to say, as someone guilty of falling into the fandom trend of forcefully 'found family-ifying' characters a LOT in the past, i find your mobile mw rewrite really compelling, especially from this '''family''' angle... Like i find the issue of fandoms doing this really fascinating, i LOVE whenever people explore the implications of something like that actually happening in-text!!!

Captains need for control and the way he views himself as a father to the crew, a papa bear like you said, is soooo compelling..... Hes convinced hes doing the right thing, hes trying to escape earth and real life and make a lie last longer... This coupled with the fact most of the crew dont even seem to LIKE him (?)(hope im not misremembering here) is so funny

Thanks a lot man! Seeing the sheer wave of people applying found family dynamics to Mouthwashing was one of the main reasons I went the route I did with tackling companies "being a family" while also critiquing the downsides of the family unit, the abuse and generational pain that goes unnoticed or is brushed off.

Captain, through forcing a family dynamic with his crew, unknowingly creates an environment that mixes all the bad of family

It's a place where you feel like you can't speak up about things that your other crewmates do/say that you don't like, it'll just fall on deaf ears

If it's even spoken about at all to begin with

Why exactly Captain is like this, I want to keep up in the air while also suggesting a few things about himself and his backstory

The crew either "tolerates" him (Like how you'd tolerate a bad/strange family member) or doesn't like him at all.

Something I'm really into doing with this story is having barely anything known about the survivors at the beginning, but have a lot known about the dead crew. Nurse, Shinsuke, Jim, and Swanz are all stuck together, but they barely know anything about each other.

This also ties into the themes of family negatives

Sometimes in our family, we barely know people but we're made to be in the same room with them because. Well. That's who we're related to.

But going back to how fandoms shove characters into family dynamics, it's admittedly something that we've all done at some point. Family's a tricky, complicated subject that seems simple at the surface. Hell, even I've had my moments with Mouthwashing where I've compared Anya and Daisuke to siblings.

Maybe there's some deeper explanation about it all. How we want to see positive family dynamics because the world has conditioned us to put up with horrible families, whether they be our own or others. But with my Mobilewashing au/rewrite, I actually want to play around with this in a sort of "ironic hypocritical way"

The characters (mainly survivors) sometimes do see the others in some kind of family dynamic

Maybe this is in the absence of their own families

Maybe the stress of the idea that they'll never see their own families again, so they do this to cope Whatever it may be, it's ironic that this is what the characters feel sometimes. To think that Captain's obsession with family would also lead the survivors to seeing one or more of themselves as siblings, aunts, uncles, or what have you.

Captain's obsession with having family is what killed most of the crew. It drove him to do all of this, to murder the crew, the "family". Does that mean the others will end up the same as him?

what is the mobile mouthwashing ripoff and what is the role of it in th e au?

the mobile mouthwashing ripoff is a mobile game that tried to be mouthwashing. if you search up mouthwashing ripoff theres like two videos detailing what it is. there’s five characters: captain, co-captain jim, shinsuke, swanz and nurse (yes this is Anya. yes her name is just straight up nurse) in the game its actually captain (curly) that crashes the ship and not co-captain jim (jimmy). jim’s just an asshole i dont know about him. there’s also mouthwash zombies. i think you should check it out its funny as fuck

anyways even though i said the rescue ship saved them, it was actually the MOBILEWASHING ship which finds curly, jimmy and anya. all of them are saved, even jimmy (which was a horrible ride home) and they are later brought back to earth where jimmy is arrested and curly + anya (along with a few others of pony express) sue the corporation that made them go through this in the first place. HOWEVER it is not the only time she sees them… because while she and curly were getting checked up by nurse, they end up becoming friends and anya and nurse keep in touch and they go to olive garden together (anya constantly feels like shit because shes never able to pay even though nurse says time and time again that its literally fine and whatnot)

anya becomes close friends with the mobilewashing crew and they have semi-fleshed out dynamics and eventually when anya is finally sure that curly will be okay she moves in with nurse and she continues healing from there. they get emotional support cats together

actually here’s a ranking of which duo would have the most beef between each other based on my rewriting of Mobilewashing from least aggressive to most aggressive

5. Shinsuke and Daisuke: I headcanon them to be cousins in my rewrite of the mobile game, they’ve been nearly glued to each other from the beginning and despite living in Florida and California respectively they talk so much on face time. People think they’re brothers with how close to each other they are. The most beef they get into is typical family stuff but also the fact that Daisuke is more out there and that causes a bit of push back from Shinsuke sometimes

4. Nurse and Anya: No bad blood between these two I’d imagine. Though Anya may be a tad bit (okay maybe secretly super) jealous of Nurse’s incredible medical capabilities and the fact that Nurse got into medical school on her first try (she mad as hell). A lot of it would be one-sided on Anya’s end but I would say that Nurse just feels bad for her, she’s trying and trying and yet keeps failing but she keeps trying, kind of sad to her, lot of accidental pity. I think they’d be good friends beyond that though, nothing more to say

3. Captain and Curly: Originally was going to put them at spot 2 but I think Curly would just feel really bad for Captain and not hold ill will towards him. Like Captain tried crashing the ship to stay with a bunch of people who he saw as family. Of course that doesn’t excuse the attempted murder-suicide and Curly is rightfully scared and scornful of it but there’s a deep sense of pity in the back of his mind. That’s really how it is with these two, pity. Captain would have more of an angry pity though because “What do you mean you’re trying to ‘work on your life being a place you don't have to fucking escape’? Isn’t your crew enough? They’re like family for god’s sake!”.

2. Swanz and Swansea: So they’re not super aggressive towards each other like how the number 1 spot duo is, but they’re like if you stuck the two angry as fuck uncles in the same room. Swanz often has a very “I don’t give a fuck do whatever” attitude about being a mechanic and Swansea is a little more strict on making sure that you stick to like, safety precautions and teaching the basics. Swansea sees that Swanz lets Shinsuke walk around heavy machinery with open toed sandals with socks and flips the fuck out

Swansea, red as a ripe tomato: “What do you MEAN you’ve been just lettin’ your goddamn intern walk around HUGE MACHINES AND PIPES this WHOLE TIME with SANDALS. And then you BARELY teach him JACK SHIT and expect him to know what every little fuckin’ wire does instantly? Are you trying to get everybody killed in a freak accident?! The fuck is wrong with you this is the most irresponsible shit I’ve seen, and I thought Pony Express hired some dumbasses waitin’ to be carried out in a body bag. Do you want that kid killed or somethin’, just wanting to get charged with manslaughter or some shit? God you’re givin’ me a big ass headache I can’t stand you”

Swanz who has been blacking out this whole time: “M’yuh-huh”

needless to say, Swansea thinks that Swanz is an irresponsible jackass and Swanz is winning the “I don’t give a fuck” war. This is as best as I can explain it. However there's still a level of respect between the two and I think they cut each other a bit of slack due to some shared background in addiction. I think they like to joke that their interns got swapped on accident

Jim Co-Pilot and Jimmy:
