Our second day on Naoshima we started off with a delicious breakfast set at Cafe Ipo, basically a husband and wife’s kitchen. From there we made our way through the 5 Art House Project installations. The first was an incredible sensory experience at “Minamidera” by artist James Turrell with the architecture by Tadao Ando. Second, we went to Go’o Shrine by artist Hiroshi Sugimoto which included an underground Stone Chamber which is supposed to reflect the Japanese Mound era. The passage way is so small you are shoulder to shoulder against the walls! Third, we visited “Kadoya” by artist Tatsuo Miyajima. An interesting meditation on time set in a 200-year old house. Fourth we visited “Gokaisho” by artist Yoshihiro Suda which turned out to be directly across from our guest house. Fifth we visited “Haisha” by artist Shinro Ohtake, an inspiring and whimsical two story sculptural/collage work of art.

The Art House Project restores traditional Naoshima houses, temples and shrines and transforms them into art spaces. Located in a ‘living’ district, they are interwoven with memories of a time when these dwellings were homes. Seven buildings are currently open to the public. . 《"Go'o Shrine" Hiroshi Sugimoto》 A shrine designed by Hiroshi Sugimoto in line with the reconstruction of the Go'o Shrine that has existed since the Edo period. . Glass stairs connect an underground stone chamber to the shrine above, uniting two worlds. . 《"Haisha" Shinro Ohtake》 Recalling a dream by retracing sensations.
