American Lady showing the Puppet Storybooks page by page

- I found these videos when trying to find out more about the Puppet Storybooks and I’m glad I did as because these books are vintage, they’re hard to find online to buy and also they’re Japanese/American so also hard to get to the UK for a good price seeing as they’re rare. These videos are useful to me in terms of aesthetic and layout and also page length, as the entire book is shown page by page. For the Hansel and Gretel book, there is a front and back cover and 16 pages with one image over 2 pages, meaning 8 images total, to tell the whole story, which is a good amount and I looked through my storyboards for the 3rd story and there are 7 parts, but probably 9-10 images, meaning it could be a 18-20 page book.

These books were a 14 part series and from what I’ve noticed from watching these videos are that they follow the same format, same page lengths and layouts, which is nice for the consistency and shows that you don’t need many pages/images to tell a story, especially in a children’s book. All the puppets and sets are also really nicely made and some things are repeated in separate books which is nice to see things being reused to tell other stories.

- The Snow White book was published twice, one slightly bigger than the other and with different puppets and an edited version of the story, but the page length is still the same and this was part of a 12 part series.

I also decided to look more into the Japanese puppeteers and game across this website (https://www.abebooks.com/book-search/author/tadasu-izawa-and-shigemi-hijikata/first-edition/) were more books are sold from that era.

This website notes another book they made (http://andiepants.blogspot.com/2013/03/lost-and-found.html) called Colours which lead me to this website (http://thetrashcollector.com/bookschildrens3Dbooks.html) showing that Tadasu Izawa and Shigemi Hijikata made more books than just fairytales and with different publishers, but all puppets! This is really interesting to find out and also discover that these books were very popular at the time (70s) in the USA and Japan, I’d never heard about them til today and it inspires me with my own rejigged project.

- The Cinderella one is by a different publisher, so the layout is different, there are 10 pages instead of 16, but there are more than one image on a page to tell the story so there are 7 photos and also the front and back photos so 9 photos in total, whereas the smaller book had 9 photos but more pages.

Animals and little Indians I seem to have started a little collection of children’s board books by some very talented Japanese ‘illustrators’, Tadasu Izawa and Shigemi Hijikata. I now have three of their books, all found at op shops. These books were all printed in Japan in the mid-70’s and released in Australia. They were amazing model makers; every photo is a little set with great pre-Photoshop techniques to make everything a bit more realistic. I love everything about these books, from the soft edging on the photos to the crazy background colours. Have a look for yourself:

When he spotted Ryuji, he waved enthusiastically at him with both hands (according to the report, cutely like a child xD)

At some point, during one of his entrances, he blew kisses to Ryuji.

[3] Soutaichou” - Loosely translated to “captain-commander” or “head captain”, and is a term that is used to refer to the person who leads the captains.

This title is used by both the fans and the cast/crew of Toumyu to refer to Kashuu Kiyomitsu who was appointed as the captain (“taichou”) to Team Sanjou in the “Trial Performance” and “Atsukashiyama Ibun”, and was the first Touken Danshi to officially be appointed captain in the Musical Touken Ranbu franchise.

In real life, it is a title that is used to refer to Sato Ryuji (the actor who plays Kashuu Kiyomitsu). He was considered to be one of the company leaders for the “Trial Performance” and “Atsukashiyama Ibun”, and was officially the company leader for “Bakumatsu Tenrouden”. During musical productions where he wasn't present, other actors have taken on the mantle of company leaders for the individual productions ("zachou"); therefore, he has been given the title of "soutaichou" as reference to his role as the general company leader for the entire franchise.

[4] This is a Japanese turn of phrase used to praise a person for being a good and reliable leader.

[5] The "Kashuu Dancers" is the name that the ensemble team who participated in the "Musical Touken Ranbu Kashuu Kiyomitsu Tanki Shutsujin 2017" call themselves.

[6] This will be the first time that a Musical Touken Ranbu production is going to Hokkaido. Additionally, it will also be the first time that a Toumyu production is heading to Sendai, which is Ryuji's hometown and another regional performance place selected for the "Musical Touken Ranbu Kashuu Kiyomitsu Tanki Shutsujin 2018" live tour.

Personal Comment:

The first experimental production since the Trial Performance as it would be the first time the Musical Touken Ranbu has done a full in-character 2.5D solo live, and it looks the first day was a huge success! Also, I'm loving how so many of, not just the cast, but also the staff and crew showed up to show their support for the franchise, the team and, of course, their soutaichou (loosely translated to “captain-commander” or “head captain”, which is the informal title that the production people and the fans use to refer to Ryuji because he was one of the unofficial company leaders for “Atsukashiyama Ibun” and Kashuu Kiyomitsu was the first Touken Danshi to officially be appointed captain in Toumyu) xD

And, we finally get a reunion of Team Sanjou after such a long while! It's fitting, I guess, that this happened during SatoKiyo's solo live with all of them showing up to support their captain ♥ How adorable is that fan with the comment of "Captain Kashuu!!" written on it (and with Shunya and Tsubatan obviously dressed in Kiyo's colours xD). Also, do I see a hint of red and black there Imarin? LOL!

I'm also kind of aw-ing at how many of them managed to turn up for the Genepro performance. I'm not sure about the rest, but Shunya had a LINE LIVE, Imarin had an evening performance in another production and Tsubatan had an interview on the same day right after the Genepro performance, and they still took time out of their busy schedules to attend as a show of their support ♥ ♥ ♥

Also, Digitarou-san xDDDD I’m still not over how he visited the final rehearsal, attended the Genepro performance *and* also attended the first public performance. The best part? He Tweeted about all of it. LOL! Once after the rehearsal. Once after the Genepro. And once after the first public performance.
