Watson is in mourning. Men did not wear as elaborate mourning as women in this era, but the extra wide hatband was one way to convey a deep personal loss. Who that loss is referring to is probably not something that Watson is entirely honest about, even to himself:

There's a theory from Madeleine B. Stern that Holmes's bookseller was a real life person named Alfred B. Clementson, and that he impersonates him in Empty House, so I nabbed that name.

Looks like these guys are okay, after all :)

The Lying Detective really shows how absolutely miserable Sherlock is without John. He attempts therapy, he relapses into his drug habit, he implies that he’s suicidal “you’re suicidal, you’re allowed chips. Trust me, it’s about the only perk”, he’s tired, his hair is messy and outgrown, his face isn’t shaved, his clothes are carelessly thrown on, he almost sends a client to the police because it’s “too weird for him”, his flat is a mess, Wiggins is practically looking after him to make sure he’s alive, there’s not a single person in his general vicinity that’s not worried about him

So yes you can deny Johnlock all you want but take one look at the state of Sherlock Holmes after being abandoned by John and tell me that he doesn’t love that man more than life itself

sherlock's drug use and TAB.

rewatched TAB and i just have so many things to say. as a lot of other people have pointed out, i'm still really frustrated with how moftiss pick and choose when they want to actually address it and when they don't. it's played for laughs sometimes, and taken dead seriously at others. but i wanted to talk about TAB specifically. first, i think it's really interesting that sherlock MADE a list in the first place. he thought he was going to die on that mission to (was it siberia? a whole cliche) anyway, he thought he was most certainly not going to make it back. we can make the safe assumption that he did in fact take the drugs before the plane -- as john says, he couldn't have taken it all in 5 minutes -- so maybe he made the list in case he suffered serious side effects before the plane took off, where mycroft and john would still be there? what i'm trying to say is that it doesn't make sense that he would take the drugs on the plane and still write a list. mycroft was still on the ground in britain and would never have found it. anyway, i am a supporter of the theory that he was intending for it to kill him, or didn't care. with what intention, i don't know what i think yet. moving on. i was just reading the script for TAB and found something of great interest to me:

sherlock's serious drug use abuse started at or before the age of 17

sherlock was in rehab at that age. it was serious enough for him to be in rehab. early 20s extends until 20-24, 25 maybe. if mycroft is 6 years older than him, then sherlock would've been 17, maybe 18, at the maximum in that rehab scene. CANONICALLY.

i hate that that scene got cut out. i hate that moftiss decide to drop these details about his backstory 4 seasons in and then do NOTHING about it. i hate that they take it seriously, and that john is at one moment worried, stricken, voice literally cracking on the "yapping?! sorry, were we interrupting your session?" and then in the next scene where they're digging, john just walks away with mary as if he doesn't care (though, wait, was that part coming from sherlock's mind palace john? in which case, even more telling that he'd imagine john as insulting and degrading to him for being an addict, and that he knows that he IS an addict, not just a user like he insists).

ugh i'm so going to address this in my fic i need to fix this. for my own psychological wellbeing
