"Terminal Spine Inquisition in the Third Degree: A Multidimensional Journey of Inquiry"
"Terminal Spine Inquisition in the Third Degree" by Shaun Lawton is a thought-provoking and intricately woven text that delves into the realms of storytelling, consciousness, and the enigmatic nature of human input. I explore the themes and stylistic elements present in Lawton's work, examining its structure, symbolism, and underlying inquiries. Unraveling the Narrative: Lawton's text presents a unique narrative structure, where a story is introduced and gradually unraveled, leading to a fundamental question concerning the whereabouts of human input. This enigmatic plotline invites readers to ponder the nature of storytelling itself, questioning the purpose and ultimate fate of the narratives we create. Automatic Feedback Loops: Within the syntherian mandate colony exorcism facility, Lawton introduces the concept of automatic feedback loops. These loops symbolize the cyclic nature of human experiences and the perpetual questioning of our actions and intentions. Lawton prompts us to contemplate the repercussions and significance of our input within the larger framework of existence. The Absence of Questions: Lawton challenges the necessity of questions by deleting question marks from the text. This absence signifies a departure from traditional inquiry and suggests that sometimes the structure of the question itself becomes the subject of interrogation. Lawton encourages readers to reconsider the role of questioning in our quest for knowledge and understanding. Converging Perspectives: Lawton explores the convergence of disparate viewpoints through consensus amalgamations. By uniting various perspectives and perspectives into a holistic panopticon, Lawton emphasizes the importance of embracing diverse viewpoints to attain a more comprehensive understanding of the world. This convergence allows for the emergence of new vistas and transformative experiences. Electromagnetic Resonance: The text delves into the workings of the electromagnetic planet core, symbolizing the powerful forces at play within the depths of consciousness. Lawton's vivid imagery and references to explosive mandalas illustrate the transformative potential of these inner workings, which challenge conventional binary perspectives and open up new realms of perception. The Persistence of Memory: Lawton explores the concept of memory and its decay over time. Through iconoclastic revenue extracted from decaying stellar recording tape, Lawton alludes to the fragility of human memory and the erosion of past experiences. This introspective exploration prompts us to reflect on the nature of personal and collective recollection. "Terminal Spine Inquisition in the Third Degree" takes readers on a multidimensional journey of inquiry, inviting them to contemplate the nature of storytelling, the significance of human input, and the transformative power of converging perspectives. Lawton's intricate prose and thought-provoking symbolism create a captivating work that challenges our perceptions and encourages us to embrace the complexities of existence.

Expatriate Polish director Andrzej Zulawski turned the stress of a bitter divorce and the pain of his having to leave his native land, which banned one of his films and halted production of another, into a work of art, POSSESSION (1981, Shudder), because that’s what artists do. Not every artist, however, would create such a queasy, visceral, absurdist take on marriage and alienation. International spy Sam Neill (who sounds like James Mason in this, which gives the film echoes of Nicholas Ray’s great deconstruction of the middle-class family, BIGGER THAN LIFE) retires to spend more time with his family in West Berlin only to discover his wife (Isabelle Adjani) wants a divorce. She lets him think she’s leaving him for another man (Heinz Bennent), but she’s actually taken another apartment, where she cares for a strange, tentacled creature.
POSSESSION doesn’t have a traditional exposition. You have to piece the characters’ backgrounds together from hints, and there’s little beyond the film’s style to explain some of their more outlandish behaviors. Yet the cast performs it with such commitment that they seem to have found the justifications for what they do. They often engage in strange, repetitive movements, as if they were dancing out their inner lives. Bennent and Neill have trouble keeping their hands off other characters, so much so that the gay private eye (Shaun Lawton) Neill hires to follow his wife thinks his client is coming on to him. Adjani has physical and vocal seizures, with the most intense being a lengthy scene in which she has a miscarriage in a subway tunnel.
You can’t really parse the film. Nothing falls neatly into place. Is the strange creature Adjani’s miscarriage, a figment of her imagination or an extension of her husband’s jealousy? Why does Adjani also play her son’s almost perfect schoolteacher? Is the wife’s best friend (Rainer Werner Fassbinder regular Margit Carstensen) trying to seduce Neill even though they claim to hate each other? Although I watched with full trust that the actors knew what they were doing, I’m not sure Zulawski cares about the answers. Logic takes a back seat to imagery. But the film has some beautiful, hypnotic Steadicam work and a marvelous creature design by Carlo Rimbaldi. It’s not for everyone — and the U.S. version that cut about 45 minutes wasn’t for anyone — but it’s likely to stay with you long after more logical films have faded from memory.

Teams: Manly's axing after show-stopping game
Tumblr media
The NRL's form player of the year, Tom Trbojevic, is set to make his return for the Sea Eagles after missing round 23 with a facial injury.Last week, Trbojevic was ruled out as a precaution amid conflicting reports the superstar fullback had damaged a pre-existing facial fracture.
Tumblr media
Tom Trbojevic (Getty)While serious injury concerns were put to bed, the Sea Eagles took no chance, resting their talisman who is set to make an emphatic return against the Bulldogs this week.Meanwhile, star teammate Moses Suli has been dropped from Des Hasler's squad despite putting up a stellar man of the match performance last week. Suli has been dropped to reserves, replaced by Brad Parker who slots straight into the centres.
Tumblr media
Moses Suli. (Getty)Elsewhere, it's tough luck for the Tigers who have the unfortunate task of taking on the Panthers without standout star Adam Doueihi who has been sidelined with a knee injury. To make matters harder for Michael Maguire's men, star winger Brian To'o has made an early return from injury and will line up on Sunday evening.Meanwhile, the Raiders have dumped halfback Sam Williams after back-to-back critical losses to the Storm and Manly.

Posthuman Review: Shaun Lawton & Nicholas Alexander Hayes
"In a few quick years, the first transhuman in vivo Minksian-Kurzweill clone emerges from its neonatal intensive care unit, eyes unblinking. Max quickly grows to establish the first CORE school (Consilience Of Recombinant Extropy) by the seasoned age of four. In the year 2020, eight-year-old Max engenders a transubstantiative doctrine reprising Heraclitus's ideas of flux. He publishes his manifesto >H by sending it back in time to his conception-year, where it now happens to appear on certain nodal points of the internet. Stars and their remnants, in the beginning, appear perfect with our skulls the shape of eggs while we listen to the music of the spheres. We never know we are dreaming, despite the uncanny appearance of our faces barely submerged below the surface of an image trapped on a screen, as if gazing at a host of cameras that were recording the whole scene and playing it back in overlapping sequences until rendered in 3D, a sort of holographic emergence as a film to show the whole fully recorded history of the human race intact in one performance taking hours to play out that tells the story of our pregalactic form expanding like a cell splitting into divisions congruent with the microchip cluster each acquires to their myriad snowflakes and fingerprints; no two are quite alike, this quality of uniqueness the most common attribute in the galaxy because it takes its shape from the constant force it has been from the beginning, a dorsal fin configuration pre-eminent to radial symmetry, subdivided from the pie & expanding in the recesses of our own mind at rates which we don’t share and we don't want to have to admit even to ourselves it could be the case but on the face of it our individuality evaporates along with the rest of the universe, siphoning itself back & forth both in and out of existence, in a blinking state of awakened beings cycled in an infinite figure eight Mobius strip, along the thermodynamic principle where the electromagnetic motors of creation pass along the triggering current arriving in its multiplicity of waves so here we are much further away from the start than we'd ever imagined before making it in a world on the verge of boiling over with accelerating change to the point it's quaking under this pretense we begin thinking about the stars & their remnants to which we end up belonging while the motion picture of our lives flashes inside our mind in an effortless gesture disarming the gravid affront with united civic resistance paving the way forward for the benefit of our progression into the distance only going to show which ends up being the case that it doesn't really matter so much as the belief we hold well and verily fixed foremost in our mind unravels before a hand to be woven in predetermined fashion foremost reveals the negative gravity bound pressure resistance capsule in the shape of a psychonautical skull transcript." - Shaun Lawton

Explanation: The equation Δ represents the dynamic nature of life and the universe. It encompasses a wide range of elements, from challenges (bugs, glitches, difficulties, etc.) to unique qualities (uniqueness of snowflakes, fingerprints, etc.) to the constant changes in the cosmos. The equation also incorporates the concept of time travel and the emergence of transhuman technology.

Saying No But Meaning Yes, Bluebirds & Survival Sex: BLACKSTAR Reviewed
By Shaun A. Lawton
What is Blackstar?  It’s a 1960 song by Elvis Presley: “Every man has a black star, a black star over his shoulder, and when a man sees his black star, he knows his time, his time has come.”It turns out David Bowie and Elvis Presley not only share the same birthday (January 8) but they were also drinking…

It’s just a hunch but I reckon Andrzej Żuławski was having a tough time on the marital front when he made this deliriously nuts arthouse splatter classic. Just a hunch, mind. Certainly Anna (Adjani) and Mark (Neill) are putting each other through the relationship wringer. Mark returns home to ‘80s Berlin after a long absence doing some shadily vague spycraft, only to find Anna’s been finding solace elsewhere. Like many couples in movies Mark and Anna shriek and bellow at each other while a child (Michael Hogben) looks tearily on, but the sense that the stakes are raised higher than Kramer vs Kramer (1979) is cemented when they meet in a café and Mark starts smashing things like smashing things is going out of fashion. It’s all very entertaining stuff, full of “deep” conversations delivered in a stagey way, but the bits where Mark loses his shit are best. Which is good, because during Possession Mark loses his shit a lot; he might even have surreptitiously stocked up on shit beforehand so much shit does he lose. Anna looks like a much better bet for any sense, but it turns out that she too is losing her shit, and her shit losing will reach truly operatic proportions before the credits roll and the viewer is left wondering just what the holy hell they just watched.

Things would be bad if Anna was just messing about with her ballet tutor, Heinrich (a thrillingly unhinged performance by Heinz Bennent, which doesn’t so much challenge the viewer but rather the entire concept of performance itself, and possibly singlehandedly redefines cinematic camp for the next hundred years). Unfortunately it’s even worse, she’s messing about on Heinrich as well with…well, uh, spoiler? There’s a reason the credits include Carlo Rambaldi, the renowned creature creator. I’ve never really been a Rambaldi fan, preferring instead Rick Baker, Screaming Mad George or even Rob Bottin, but Andrzej Żuławski keeps Rambaldi’s work off screen or splashed with gore, so any deficiencies are lost in the very effective shock the visual carries.

Possession’s greatest special effect is the city of Berlin itself; it is set in Berlin when the Wall was up, see. It seems like some kind of early John Carpenter riff now in 2018, but, yes, the city of Berlin was in fact, post WW2, separated East and West, by a big wall with barbed wire, machine guns and sallow men in warm hats peering through binoculars. A divided city, a divided couple, yeah, all that stuff is in Possession. As is doubling, every clever director’s device of choice. And of course the title has more than one meaning. Sure, you could get all chalk and elbow patches about Possession but that’s on your own time. It’s the crazy shit I warm to and…hoo boy! Because as everything around him becomes ever more unhinged, some semblance of sanity finally possesses (ho!) Mark and he sets a detective on Anna’s trail, and when that works out badly he sets Heinrich on the case. Things look like they are trundling to a possibly merely slightly nuts conclusion when Żuławski goes “Ha!” and sets course for the heart of insanity with a final act that becomes apocalyptically demented and then carries right on through.

Possession’s an overwrought wail of a movie but it’s not lacking in discipline, don’t think that for one hot second. The tell is how the characters’ apparent lack of control in front of the camera is balanced by the total control behind it. Characters stomp around, spin on a pin and hurriedly flail off again, in rooms, down stairs, out of doors up and down, in and out, round and round but the camera stays right with them, it never misses a single step. No mean feat in the ‘80s when cameras were as big as suitcases. Żuławski’s hysteria is (ta-da!) rehearsed hysteria but the seeming spontaneity is uncannily convincing. The director’s control clearly extends to the performances; given everyone is so simpatico in their oddness Żuławski’s plainly had a word in every actor’s shell-like. Everyone is good, but Neill, Adjani and Bennent are volcanoes of thespian awesomeness.

Adjani in particular is a revelation. She definitely has the hardest (because it is the most ambiguous) part, but she tears into it like a dog with a bag of hot chips. Actresses are eternally undervalued, largely because their roles are frequently underwritten, but here Adjani gets a chance to thesp until something snaps and she grabs it with both clawed hands. The bit where she has a breakdown (miscarriage?) in a pedestrian tunnel and ends up slouched in her own secretions of (apparently) milk, blood and fairy liquid is the kind of frenzied brilliance you’ll die happy you witnessed. Andrzej Korzyński’s earworm of a soundtrack certainly doesn’t hurt either. For a movie so apparently overheated and unrestrained  Possession turns out to be a thing of artistic precision and icy control.

Back in 1981 Possession was an unremittingly bleak spew in the face of optimism and yet…in 2018 the wall has gone, Berlin is united, Germany has healed and is doing just fine; so hope has snuck in retroactively. “This too shall pass” turns out to be the secret message of hope at the heart of Possession. A message secret even from the movie itself; a message equally applicable to divided cities and divided marriages; a message the movie wasn’t built to carry but then history always does the heavy lifting. I first saw this movie reviewed in “Starburst” (a British genre movie magazine, 1977 to present) in its year of release and made a pre-pubescent mental note to keep an eye out for it. Nearly four decades later I can rip that mental post-it note up. Possession was worth the wait.
