My whole life has been decided by fate. I think something more powerful than we are decides our fates for us. I know one thing — I've never planned anything that ever happened to me. - Sharon Tate

Eye of the Devil (1966)
Have you seen Sharon Tate as a satanic witch?
🏹Occult conspiracy is rooted in the French countryside. However, the story is about a Parisian woman (Kerr), whose husband (Niven) has to return to the family farm to take care of the vineyard. Despite her husband's opposition, she arrives there with her two young children, and finds threatening village community and strange rituals.
🍇There is a strong folk horror aspect in this movie. Local religion holds that the earth requires periodic sacrifices if it is to remain fertile.
🕊️The housewife ends up losing her identity as wife and mother through the denial of pagan magical beliefs and the rejection of witchcraft. In Eye of the Devil, the well‐intending wife/mother protagonist unwittingly intrudes upon an occult‐based society, in which the landowning family must periodically offer up its members for human sacrifice.
🪦The housewife Catherine and the “witch” Odile (Sharon Tate) each try to navigate the world around them. Catherine is unable to save her husband or her family from the evil forces around them, and she subsequently is changed at the end of the film. The difference between the two can be seen in the rooftop (best) scene, where Odile’s calm and soft voice tries to lure Catherine to her death. 😵💫
Kim Novák played originally the Catherines role but she was hurt during the filming in the horse riding scene.
👩🌾🧑🌾The next‐door neighbors themselves could be and are among the conspirators. Also, the British film comingles two sibling ambassadors (mute? David Hemmings) of the ambivalently ‘beautiful’ or ‘sinister’ postwar generation with the older villagers together as co conspirators.
Funny detail: Alex Sanders was used as a witchcraft expert in this film.
Quote: Did he lie to you? Oh, but you must be used to that by now. Men always lie. Personally, I have no use for them. (Odile)
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Setting, music, stars, plot, Tate
🫤🫤😴 Theatrical acting (especially Kerr), unintended funniness
