So, we want highlight and pay homage to the achievements of women over 50 who are continuing their reign as sensational musicians, including Tracy Chapman, Shania Twain, Barbra Streisand, and Mariah Carey, who affirm the value of experience and longevity in an industry often fixated on youth.
Gwen Stefani
Gwen Stefani is the frontwoman and co-founder of ska-pop-rock band No Doubt, a multi-platinum selling solo artist, fashion designer, a judge on The Voice, and the better half of Blake Shelton, with whom she’s recorded her latest single, “Purple Irises.”

Over Again - Mix CD & Playlist
I'll start posting the fic soon! Maybe this weekend? In the meantime, this playlist goes with the fic. The first 19 songs are the ones Joel and Sarah burned on a mix CD for you/reader late in 2001. After that it's just more vibes (and relevant songs…).
I was a teenager in 2000 and I grew up in the south (not in Texas, though I lived there later), so I was aiming for songs I would have heard on the radio and songs the reader and Joel definitely would have heard on the radio and when they went out dancing (we're talking two-step and merengue, and more). You'll see more of this later, but Joel teaches you to dance in this fic. Thank you to @thatoneobsessedlinguist-writes for your help and song suggestions!
Read on for my annotated list with headcanons for the first 19 songs.
Mild spoiler warning for the fic - there are some notes and context for various bits of the story, so I'd hold off on reading until later if you're not into that.
Joel & Sarah's ~Awesome~ Mix
Link to playlist here
Some general categories -
Songs 1-6: those inescapable songs you would have heard every time Joel took you dancing. Some of them were the songs playing when he taught you the steps.
Songs 9-15: the same, but for country night/dance clubs, for two-stepping and line dancing.
Just take a moment and let the truth settle in your heart - the Miller brothers know how to two-step and how to line dance. And they'll break those out or a bit of merengue or bachata and more on a night out or at family gatherings.
La Bomba - azul azul (2000) This song played in every club in 2001, and you can't convince me otherwise. Also, there's a moment with this song in the fic that cracks me up (no spoilers).
Suavemente - Elvis Crespo (1998) Just imagine Joel leading you through a bit of merengue to this song in a club. I'll wait.
Lambada - Kaoma (1989) I'll be honest, I can't imagine this playlist without this song. Everyone would have known it, they'd have heard it out and at every family gathering, forever.
Fruta Fresca - Carlos Vives (1999) Once you start to catch on, Joel throws these faster songs at you, whirling you around and keeping his eyes locked on you the whole time. Ese beso con que sueño, cuando, las penas me acechan...
Rie y Llora - Celia Cruz (2000) Sarah's Abuela/Joel & Tommy's mom loves Celia Cruz. Her songs play at every family gathering, and the whole family knows the entire Celia Cruz catalog. They have to. (This is the song Joel and Sarah are dancing to in the backyard in the excerpt I posted the other day.)
Arrasando - Thalia (2000) Another one of those songs that Joel throws at you once you've got the steps down. Ellie thinks the fast songs are the best ones, later.
Que Me Quedes Tú - Shakira (2001) We have to have a couple of slow songs, at least, and this album was huge in 2001. I think Sarah, a bilingual kid in Texas, would have loved it.
¡Que Bonito! - Rosario (1996) This is the song that plays when you and Joel are slow dancing in the backyard, after he teaches you to dance, when he kisses you for the first time. Qué bonito poder sentirte así...
Austin - Blake Shelton (2001) Look, they lived in Austin. This song came out mid-summer, 2001. There is no chance it didn't play in every single country night club in Austin for years.
The Way You Love Me - Faith Hill (1999) This song was inescapable. I've line danced to it myself.
What About Now - Lonestar (1999) Joel Miller would have loved this song. Imagine him taking you for a spin around the dance floor to this one. Baby, for once let's don't think twice...
Cowboy Take Me Away - The Chicks (1999) I feel that this one speaks for itself. I also think Sarah would have laughed at both of you every time you got emotional about it. Ellie would do the same 20 years later.
Man! I Feel LIke A Woman! - Shania Twain (1997) Sarah helps Joel make this mix CD as a gift for you. You know she'd add this song – you and Sarah would have sung this song at the top of your lungs while dancing around Joel and Tommy in the kitchen, as they watched and laughed. Joel also loves watching you line dance to it when it comes on at a club and the men clear the floor (this is exactly what happened in the early 2000s every time this song played, in my experience).
Boot Scootin' Boogie - Brooks & Dunn (1991) I think it might be illegal not to play this song at a country night club. I'm serious. Especially in 2001.
All My Ex's Live in Texas - George Strait (1987) They live in Texas. I'm pretty sure they're still playing this song in Texas, even though I haven't lived there in 8 years.
No One Needs To Know - Shania Twain (1995) In my mind, this song captures the moment you set eyes on Joel the first time, in the first chapter of the fic. And maybe you would have told him that, later, when it came on the radio one day in his truck. I met a tall, dark and handsome man, and I've been busy makin' big plans...
Forever and Ever, Amen - Randy Travis (1987) Joel Miller is a cheesy romantic. And he would sing this song to you in the kitchen like the big sap he is.
Amazed - Lonestar (1999) This is Joel’s song for you, like No One Needs To Know was your song for him. That man feels every single lyric as he slow dances with you to this song in his backyard. He also thinks this is the last song on the CD, which is romantic, but Sarah sneaks one more past him. I wanna spend the rest of my life, with you by my side...
Pickup Man - Joe Diffie (1994) At some point, you and Sarah establish an inside joke about this song and Joel, and it makes you laugh your asses off every time it plays. (You tell Ellie the story later, in the fic.) Joel pretends to be grumpy about it, but secretly he loves seeing the two of you get along like that. Sarah sneaks it onto the CD without Joel noticing until he hears it later and sighs, long-suffering, hiding his smile from the two of you as you shout-sing the lyrics at him in his pickup truck. I met all my wives in traffic jams, there's just something women like about a Pickup Man...
I can hear you, fellow olds - 19 songs? On a burned CD? Look, it’s not impossible. I definitely had a few with 18 or 19 songs on them. Let’s just assume it worked.

Audacy has launched its first FM broadcast station with Super Hi-Fi, an AI-powered radio service for broadcast and digital media companies. Starting Thursday, Audacy will power KQKS-HD2 (Front Range Country 103.1) in Denver with Super Hi-Fi's AI powered platform and toolset, including its Program Director Radio Operating System. Audacy launched Front Range Country 103.1 in March, 2023. The new station features over three decades of Country music, centered on hits from artists such as Garth Brooks, George Strait, Shania Twain, Brooks and Dunn, Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw, Trisha Yearwood and others, while also including modern artists like Zac Brown, Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney and Blake Shelton. The integration is a full cloud-first technology approach that dramatically reduces the total operational cost and complexity associated with traditional platforms. Additionally, this launch includes a move to a fully transmitter-based playout structure, underpinned by the Orban 5950 Super Hi-Fi Edition that recently won numerous awards at NAB Las Vegas. Audacy says that the combination of cloud-based AI radio tools, along with transmitter-based reception and playout, demonstrates how the next step in radio operations will be simpler and easier to manage, with significantly lower costs across the operations chain. I knew country artists who were popular around 2011 because thats when I started watching the CMAs
I got into Johnny Cash because of Joaquin Phoenix
WAS an Elvis stan before I found out he was a creep - idk if he's considered country I always felt he bordered country and rock and roll
Got into Dolly Parton and Billy Ray Cyrus because of Hannah Montana
Shania Twain, Blake Shelton, and Rascal Flatts are probably the only ones I discovered "on my own"
And The Country Bears
Can never forget The Country Bears
Need Disney to put the movie soundtrack on Spotify

Blake Shelton revealed plans for his long-awaited Las Vegas residency on Thursday, but he’s still holding his cards pretty close to his famous vest.
“At the moment, all I know is that I’m doing it,” Shelton told American Songwriters
“It’s been five or six years now that that’s kind of been a possibility, and I just kind of kept kicking the can down the road,” Shelton said. “It became obvious that it was going to happen at some, but I wanted to wait until Ole Red was completed and it was up and running and all the kinks worked out before I did the Vegas residency. Because I want to be able to play both of them honestly while I’m there.”
“The Voice” alum readily admits he’s uber-competitive. When he saw everyone from Shania Twain and Carrie Underwood to Garth Brooks, Luke Bryan and Keith Urban slapping down extended Vegas runs, he didn’t want to be left out.
“It seems to be the new watermark for, ‘Have you made it?’ whether you’ve had a Vegas residency or not,” Shelton said. “So, I definitely need to check this one off the board because it seems like anybody who is anybody is doing a Vegas residency. It’s just a cool thing to do now.”
When the February slot opened at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Shelton snapped it up. He said six shows is a short residency but that it’s the first time-possibly in his career-that he’s played six back-to-back shows in the same venue. The closest experience for him was going to work on “The Voice” every day, and that was a different beast entirely.
“I’m looking forward to it,” he exclaimed. “I haven’t really thought about what the show’s going to be or anything, to be honest with you. I mean, we literally just completed the agreement or whatever in the last few weeks. Now it’s time to start thinking about what it’s going to be.”
Blake Shelton Jokes He Won’t Hang From the Rafters
He said six shows is a short residency but that it’s the first time possibly in his career that he’s played six back-to-back shows in the same venue. Shelton went to 12 or 13 of his wife Gwen Stefani’s residency dates, so he knows how residency shows differ from typical concerts on tour. Carrie Underwood does aerial work during her residency. Bryan constructed a huge bridge over the audience. And Brooks leans heavily into the songs and his connection with the audience. Shelton quips that his show will be more like Brooks’ than Underwood’s because his physique is built more for holding guitars than swinging from scarves. “I don’t know what the weight limit is on the rafters over there, so I better not be hanging from anything,” he laughed. I kind of have an idea of how it’s different, what people expect, and what I want to do as far as something different than what I do on a regular tour. This will be way different for me, but I’m excited about it.”

At the Moody Center in Austin, Texas, the CMT (Country Music Television) Music Awards were presented on Sunday. At the conclusion of the evening, Kane and his wife Katelyn Brown made history by becoming the first husband-and-wife team to win the coveted video of the year award for their song "Thank God." 2023 CMT Music Awards
So today on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I will be talking all about the 2023 CMT (Country Music Television) Music Awards. The show originally aired on 8pm EST (Eastern Standard Time) on CBS (Channel 12 where I am at). The show was hosted for another year by Kane Brown & Kelsea Ballerini.
And we will include awards and performances from the red carpet leading up to the show as well. But first we will start with the performances that happened on this night.
Performances (Who played & what they played for us). Midland featuring Jon Pardi - Longneck way to go (Red carpet performance). Blake Shelton - No body. Tyler Hubbard - Dancin' in the Country. Gary Clark Jr. honoring Stevie Ray Vaughan - The house is rockin'. Lily Rose - Whatcha know about that. Carly Pearce - What he didn't do. Wynonna Judd & Ashley McBryde - I wanna know what love is. Cody Johnson - Human. Keith Urban - Brown eyes baby. Nate Smith - Whiskey on you. Lainey Wilson - Heart like a truck. Jackson Dean - Don't come lookin'. Gwen Stefani & Carly Pearce - Just a girl. Jelly Roll - Need a favor. Kelsea Ballerini - IF YOU GO DOWN (I'M GOIN' DOWN TOO). Kane Brown with Katelyn Brown - Thank God. Avery Anna - Narcissist. The Black Crowes with Darius Rucker- She talks to Angels. Alanis Morrissette, Lainey Wilson, Ingrid Andress, Madeline Edwards, & Morgan Wade - You oughta know. Megan Moroney - Tennessee orange. Carrie Underwood - Hate my heart. Chapel Hart - You can have him Jolene. All-star tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd featuring Warren Haynes, Chuck Leavell, Cody Johnson, Ethan Pilzer, Rich Redmond, Billy Gibbons, Slash, LeAnn Rimes, & Wynonna Judd - Simple man -> Sweet home Alabama.
Awards (Who won what and who should have won according to the MSR (Midnight Star Report) which is my weekly Country Music Countdown). Digital first Performance goes to Jelly Roll and was awarded on the red carpet pre-show (This one I voted for Scotty McCreery with his Damn Strait). Group/Duo Video of the year goes to the Zac Brown band - Out in the middle (This one I voted for Parmalee, they had the Billboard Country Music Airplay Chart for the year 2022). Collaborative video of the year goes to Hardy featuring Lainey Wilson - wait in the truck (This one i voted for Kane Brown with Katelyn Brown - Thank God). Breakthrough Female video of the year goes to Megan Moroney - Tennessee orange (I picked Morgan Wade - Wilder days, but didn't really have a strong choice here). Breakthrough male video of the year goes to Jelly Roll - Son of a sinner (I believe I picked Jelly Roll but it could have also gone to Nate Smith). Female Video of the year goes to Lainey Wilson - Heart like a truck (I believe I picked this one to win). Performance of the year goes to Cody Johnson - Cody Johnson - 'Til you can't (That's who I picked to win). Male video of the year goes to Jelly Roll - Son of a sinner (This is a shocker, and I picked Morgan Wallen - Wasted on you). Video of the year goes to Kane Brown with Katelyn Brown - Thank God (This one started with 16 choices, and I picked Morgan Wallen - You proof which had a lot of success on the charts). Shania Twain - Equal play award.
And that's a wrap for the awards and performances on this night. And on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I would give this show a 3.5 out of 5 stars. As usual, they could have played some newer songs and with that I give Jelly Roll's - Need a favor or Cody Johnson's - Human performance of the night. Thanks for taking the time to read this review. See ya all next time.

Country Music Recording Artist Chris Clark Releases New “Single Glass Half Empty”
Tribe 615 flagship recording artist Chris Clark is celebrating the release of his sophomore single titled “Glass Half Empty.”* Penned by the twenty-eight-year-old songwriter alongside Tommy Collier (who is widely recognized for his significant role in kick-starting Katy Perry’s career), and produced by Kolt Barber, the original tune is AVAILABLE NOW via all digital retail and streaming platforms. (Digital distribution and streaming provided by Ed Gertler/Digital Retail Services.) Vintage production combined with an infusion of country and R&B vibes creates a moody sway to enliven the melancholy retrospect of a love affair on the rocks. As a clever play on words, the whiskey bottle simulates an hourglass that’s running out of time and a relationship headed toward the bottom of the barrel. Wax and wane vocals, supported by moody guitar highlights, capture the emotional reverence. “The storyline recalls a romance that once poured over with excitement and hope for the future, and now, it just ‘exists’,” said Chris Clark. “The relationship is not 100% true; she’s no longer in it…and in hindsight, he’d do things differently. If he had a chance for a do-over, he’d work it out to the very last drop, lethal or not!” TIME SIPS AWAY FAST LIKE WE’RE RUNNIN’ OUTTA WHISKEY WHEN YOU’RE GOOD AND GONE THAT’S WHEN IT HITS ME LOVIN’ YOU GIRL IS LIKE A GLASS HALF EMPTY “It’s been a new creative experience working with Chris,” said producer Kolt Barber. “He’s got a knack to string lyrical structures that, when combined with the melody, are far and away from traditional country music compositions that play it safe and stay in the lane.” The track was recorded at the historic Hilltop Studios in Nashville (George Jones/Johnny Cash/Dolly Parton/Merle Haggard/Loretta Lynn) and features instrumental performances by award-winning, hall-of-fame musicians, including Brent Mason (George Strait/Alan Jackson/Shania Twain/Blake Shelton), Buddy Hyatt (TOTO/Lee Greenwood/Randy Travis/JoDee Messina/Tracy Lawrence) and Duncan Mullins (Amy Grant/Steve Wariner/Richard Marx). The release follows the momentum of Clark’s debut single “The Girls Of Tennessee” and is the first in his waterfall series of releases anticipated in 2023. The single will impact radio in early April.
