Music of Lands Between
Today I really want to ramble about the importance of music we can hear from Elden Ring NPCs bc it makes me feel A LOT. Here's a small video compilation
One of the things that make fictional world building actually GOOD and believable for me is the existence of art in the world. Often art is an urge to express the feelings in reaction to some events or to just cope; it's a catharsis. If the fictional world has history, it would have art history as well. What strikes me about the existence of music in Lands Between is the fact that this world is broken and ruined; and yet...there's an urge to create. The culture still exists and develops. The fact that the developers included these little details in the game's world makes it feel alive.
1) A page playing flute. It seems that they're playing it by the graveyard? I love how this melody fits the ambient music of Leyndell...and the atmosphere of it, too; the grief and the pain and the sombre hope in this city.
2) Chanting Winged Dame and her song of lament. What is interesting, is that the lyrics have a meaning - she signs about the sadness of the fate of this world. Beautiful song and I love that we can hear it from afar.
3) Nomadic Merchant's song. I love how sombre it is, I love how uniquely their culture is designed, I love the fact that the fingers are animated in sync with this melody, I love how it reflects the mood of the environment. They've lost everything, but the music, the important part of their culture, is still with them.
4) The songs of the Ancestral Follower Shamans is what made this place unique and otherworldly to me, such beautiful voice.
5) Frenzied Nomad surrounded by its people who went insane because of the Flame of Frenzy. Love the horrific contrast between the jovial melody and the horrid environment.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Six Song Soundtrack Game -
Thanks for the tag @fourraccoonsinacoat !!
Abelard, bring here those [checks data-slate] *garage rock stars* and give them back their flutes and xenodrums. Yes, the ones that van Calox confiscated, too. Don't fret, I'll distract him. Yes, Pasqal, you and Vigdis can play too.
Rules: If you're tagged, make a new post with links to music and/or lyrics describing the following -
Event that defines your character's past:
Apocalypse Please • Muse
Declare this an emergency Come on and spread a sense of urgency And pull us through And pull us through
And this is the end, the end This is the end of the world
How your character sees themselves:
bury a friend - song and lyrics by Billie Eilish | Spotify
Today, I'm thinkin' about The things that are deadly The way I'm drinkin' you down Like I wanna drown, like I wanna end me
Step on the glass, staple your tongue (ah) Bury a friend, try to wake up (ah)
How others view them:
Break on Through (To the Other Side) - song and lyrics by The Doors | Spotify
We chasing our pleasures here Dug our treasures there But can you still recall Time we cried
Break on through to the other side Break on through to the other side
Their closest relationship (platonic or romantic):
Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) - song and lyrics by Eurythmics, Annie Lennox, Dave Stewart | Spotify
Sweet dreams are made of this Who am I to disagree? I travel the world And the seven seas Everybody’s looking for something
A major fight scene:
Krigsgaldr - song and lyrics by Heilung | Spotify
What am I to do If I want to talk about peace and understanding But you only understand the language of the sword?
I sing my sword song for you, the lullaby of obliteration So I stand up with a smile and bliss in my heart And bliss in my heart, and bliss in my heart
[We can make Ulfar growl this and Argenta do the shaman parts (probably heresy, but who is going to say anything when he is so distracted)]
End credits song:
Fireflower - song and lyrics by Tiamat | Spotify
Always cold outside And it's freezing inside Into the fire we ride
A shortcut out of the white Until we're stitched to the night Our faith our light
You're lonely but so is the desolate one You're drowning but so was the first born son I'll soak you in fire, fill your black holes And free your soul
Mildly tagging @infernaldaydreams @nadas-dirthalen @thievinghippo @vitanithepure @saviinika @avas-poltergeist @just-another-pigeon to join this metal synth heretical pop lower decks disco if they wish.
Also, for your iconoclast 'fuck dat Imperium, we want to sip margarita on the beach' playthrough bonus track here:

The Role of Sound in Shamanic Practices
Tumblr media
Sound plays a crucial role in shamanic practices across various cultures. It is used to facilitate altered states of consciousness, perform healing rituals, and communicate with the spirit world. Sound is regarded as one of the most effective ways of establishing connections with the spirit realm, since it travels through space, permeates visual and physical barriers, and conveys information from the unseen world. Sound, therefore, is a means of "relationship" as well as a "transformation" of energy. Here are the key ways sound is utilized in shamanism:
Inducing Altered States of Consciousness
Rhythmic Drumming and Percussion:
Repetition and Rhythm: Drumming at specific rhythms (typically 4-7 beats per second) can induce trance states. The repetitive, monotonous sound helps to alter brainwave patterns, promoting a shift from normal waking consciousness to a trance state.
Instruments: Common percussion instruments include drums, rattles, and clappers. Each produces a distinct sound that can affect the practitioner's state of mind.
Vocalizations:
Chanting and Singing: Shamans use their voices to produce chants, songs, and mantras. These vocalizations can have a calming, focusing effect, aiding in the trance induction.
Overtone Singing: Some traditions use overtone or throat singing, which produces multiple pitches simultaneously, creating a complex sound environment conducive to trance.
Ambient Sounds:
Natural Sounds: Environmental sounds like flowing water, wind, and animal calls are often incorporated into rituals, enhancing the sensory experience and facilitating altered consciousness.
2. Facilitating Communication with the Spirit World
Spiritual Dialogues:
Invocation and Prayer: Shamans use sound to call upon spirits, deities, or ancestors. These sounds can include specific prayers, chants, or songs that are believed to attract or summon spiritual entities.
Response Mechanism: Sound can also be a medium through which spirits are believed to respond, with shamans interpreting these auditory phenomena as messages from the spiritual realm.
Ritualistic Soundscapes:
Ceremonial Spaces: The acoustics of ceremonial spaces (like caves or specially designed ritual chambers) are used to amplify and enrich sound, creating an immersive environment that enhances spiritual communication.
Echoes and Resonance: Natural acoustics, such as echoes and resonances in caves or built structures, may be interpreted as the voices of spirits or deities responding to the shaman.
3. Healing and Therapeutic Uses
Sound Healing:
Restorative Frequencies: Certain sounds and rhythms are believed to have healing properties, restoring balance and harmony to the body and mind.
Instrumental Healing: Instruments like drums, flutes, and singing bowls are used to produce sounds that are thought to facilitate physical and emotional healing.
Diagnostic Sounds:
Listening to the Body: Some shamanic practices involve listening to the body’s sounds (like heartbeats or breaths) to diagnose illness or imbalance.
Healing Chants and Songs: Specific chants or songs are used to target different ailments, with the shaman's voice considered a powerful healing tool.
4. Enhancing Rituals and Ceremonies
Ritual Structure:
Sound Cues: Sound signals different phases of a ritual, marking transitions from one state or activity to another.
Community Involvement: Collective chanting, singing, or drumming involves the community, reinforcing social bonds and shared spiritual experiences.
Symbolic Sounds:
Animal Sounds: Mimicking animal sounds or using instruments that produce similar effects can symbolize the presence or assistance of animal spirits.
Elemental Sounds: Sounds representing natural elements (like thunder drums for storms or rain sticks for water) invoke the power and presence of these elements in rituals.
5. Cultural and Contextual Variations
Regional Practices:
Cultural Diversity: Different cultures have unique shamanic traditions with specific instruments, vocal techniques, and sound rituals. For example, Siberian shamans might use drum patterns distinct from those used by Amazonian shamans.
Contextual Adaptations: The use of sound in shamanism can vary depending on the context, such as healing, divination, or community ceremonies.
Technological Integration:
Modern Adaptations: Contemporary shamans may integrate modern musical instruments and technology, such as electronic soundscapes, to enhance traditional practices.
Conclusion
Sound is an integral element of shamanic practices, serving as a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds. Through rhythmic drumming, chanting, and the use of resonant spaces, shamans induce altered states of consciousness, facilitate communication with spirits, and perform healing rituals. The study of these acoustic practices through archaeoacoustics can deepen our understanding of ancient shamanic traditions and their enduring impact on cultural rituals and spiritual practices today.

#37 for the kiss prompts?
37. …without a motive.
Thanks! The pairing I'm choosing is Flyby/Jake from Shadowrun: Returns
The Mitsuhama run had gone off without a hitch, a rare thing in the shadows, and now the crew was celebrating their payday at the Seamstress's Union.
Except, instead of having to spend money like Jake expected, he and Flyby were greeted with music, strobe lights, and free booze. While Jake and Flyby were gone, Mrs. Kubota, the Union's owner, had decided to throw together a little shindig to celebrate the fall of Seattle's branch of the Universal Brotherhood. Indeed, the people here had many grievances with that insect-worshipping doomsday cult. The death of Shane, the near-destruction of the city by insect spirits, and, of course, the murder of the beloved, yet contentious Sam Watts, resident friend, jokester, and all-around drekhead. While everyone here had many awful stories about the guy, they all had a soft spot for that particular regular.
At the very least, no one had wanted him to die the way he had.
Mrs. Kubota wasted no time popping the cork off the champagne bottle and filled the glasses of her inner circle. Flyby took her flute with a grunt of thanks. Jake smiled and thanked the lady of the establishment, though he would have preferred an ice tea.
"A toast to the Emerald City Ripper, may he rot in hell," said Mr Kluwe. Everyone toasted.
"A toast to Shane." Cherry Bomb said no more. No more needed to be said.
"A toast to Jessica Watts and the Universal Brotherhood," said Johnny Clean. "May those bastards be buried forever.
But when Mrs. Kubota toasted to Sam Watts, their dearest friend, Flyby angrily downed the rest of her flute while everyone else raised their glass. Jake did not blame his new acquaintance one bit, though he was hardly surprised at the turn of events. Jake didn't believe for a second that Sam had the nuyen to purchase such a ludicrous life insurance policy, and he believed that his old friend had the responsibility to keep up with the premiums even less. Flyby had been close with Sam longer than anyone else here had known him. And after all the work she did to avenge him--track down a serial killer, break into a megacorp, and take down a dangerous toxic shaman cult--and it turned out the 100,000-nuyen she had been promised as a fail-safe had turned out to be a bust.
Jake spent the next few hours chatting with the others, getting in as many free drinks as Mrs. Kubota would allow, and even dancing. When it was time for him to take his leave, he spotted Flyby in the corner, nursing a beer and clicking away at the keys on her cyberdeck. She had her visor over her eyes so that others couldn't see that she was deep in thought.
Jake smoothly slid into the seat from across from her. "Well, madame mastermind, you looking at cat vids?"
"Just catfishing the CIO of a mid-level corp," Flyby responded. "Let's see how long this dumb ass realizes he isn't talking to the chief inspector at Lone Star."
"Not enjoying the party when you practically made all of this happen by yourself?" asked Jake.
Flyby snorted in response.
"Still sore about the whole life insurance flop?" asked Jake.
Flyby stopped typing, her fingers resting over the deck. "I bet you think I'm a sucker. Look at me, the bakebrain coming to Seattle for a big payday gets suckered into doing thousands of nuyen worth of free labor for her deadbeat of an ex, isn't that right?"
"Sam did have a way of making himself feel like a best friend even when mooching off of people and getting himself and others into the worst kind of trouble," Jake said delicately.
'Perhaps,' said a voice at the back of his head, 'because in his own way, he was a best friend.' Even after all Jake had put up with with Sam, even he found it hard to say no to the poor bastard. He was a flake and an asshole, but there were some things he could be depended on that most others couldn't.
"The truth is even dumber," Flyby continued, almost as if she hadn't heard Jake's response. "I think deep down I knew he was bullshitting me, but...I don't know. It wasn't so much about the money. He was lousy in every other area, but when he and I ran the shadows together, he was the only person I could trust with my life. He always had my back when I needed him. Even though every instinct was telling me he was lying, after all this time I was just hoping he wouldn't let me down again, that for just this once, he would come through for me, like he used to."
Jake could sympathize. Loyalty was a rare thing in the shadows. Beyond the fringes of self-interested corporations and corrupt laws, everyone was only in it for themselves. You don't get close to anyone in the shadows; everyone either dies or finds a new agenda to follow. Jake had experienced true loyalty and trust only once in his career as a runner, and he'd do anything to experience it again.
Maybe what Flyby did for Sam wasn't so dumb or nonsensical after all. Even if Sam didn't deserve it.
Flyby's face lit up. "Son of a bitch, the idiot actually gave me his credentials!" She started typing furiously. "Let's see how the CEO likes an army of bots digging around company files..."
"I guess I'll leave you to it then..."
"Armitage wait." Flyby pushed aside her cyberdeck as Jake was about to get up.
"Yeah?"
"Look, I think you're charming, and funny, and you seem like a good guy, what do you say to us going off and finding someplace to stay for the night?" asked Flyby. "And before you make a joke, yes, I am propositioning you."
Jake was stunned, but he supposed that this was not completely unexpected. He and Flyby hadn't spent much time during the Sam debacle; their paths had only brushed up against each other once or twice. But each time was a high-intensity romp where each of them had to rely on the competence and loyalty of a relative stranger in order to stay alive and reach their goals, keeping each other's objectives in line so one still had reason to help the other out. It was easy to form an intense, if short-lived bond between two people.
Also, in the short time they've spent together, Flyby had both intrigued and impressed Jake. She may have been ruthless and mercenary, not caring if others get hurt for her payday, but she was a wizard on the cyberdeck and the fastest gunslinger he had ever met, just the kind of person he had needed to take out the Halloweener gang when it was just the two of them. Plus, she was drop-dead gorgeous: small and plump with a heart-shaped face, cobalt hair, blue nails, full lips which she always painted dark blue, wires running through skin that made Jake wonder where they all went, and--though Flyby would kick his ass if he ever said it to her face--under her visor were the most precious blue eyes he'd ever seen.
And there was the whole thing with Sam. Despite saying she only takes jobs that pay, this woman really came all the way to Seattle just to avenge the death of a friend, putting faith in their friendship that he would have been there for her like she had been for him. She even went the whole mile and tracked down who hired the killer when perhaps she could have technically collected her pay when she geeked the man who'd held the knife.
Trust and loyalty. Very rare things to find in the shadows. And they came from unexpected places.
Jake slid into the seat next to her. "Well, I think you're pretty, hyper-competent, and dangerous in the best way, so why not?"
Flyby grabbed his lapel and pulled him into a kiss. Her lip rings pressed a cold tingle against his, their hardness a contrast to her soft warm lips. When he held her, the wiring on her skin felt electric under his touch, like a tingling web over her inviting body. It was easy to get lost in the intensity of it all.
Jake supposed he won't be sleeping in a morgue slab tonight.

Misc Swordancer Thoughts:
Practice bone scrying (putting bones in fire and reading the cracks mostly. Also do wishbones)
BIG partiers. Look for any opportunity to throw a feast.
The Steppe isn't that close to the coast, but many clans have trade routs with the Coastal Clans. Shellfish and crustaceans are a rare commodity for them.
The Steppe has a salmon run bc i said so. It's a festival of peace and co-operation, with many clans gathering to fish together. A lot of cross-clan marriages happen during this time.
Oddly, though they love dancing and music, singers are rare amongst them. Sure, people sing, but they're not great at it. Most would rather use drums or bone flutes (Saskia can sing, of course)
idk if I've mentioned it here but most Swordancers are dun with minimal white. They do have an oddly high amount of leucistic members.
due to them cultivating hrihriwa milk, Swordancers have noticeable breasts lmao
It's unknown why they can change their gendered traits. Some think Swordancers are born with separate sexes for their different forms and just mix and match.
Falconers take their birds very seriously. Many couples have broken up if their birds don't get along. Insulting, or stars forbid HURTING someone's bird is a good way to get your ass thrashed.
A lot of Swordancer duels are playing chicken. Due to their horns, duellers will form elaborate dances to show off their skill and strength before risking injury actually fighting.
However you will get stabbed if you're that much of an asshole. They like aiming for flanks and shoulders.
Swordancers find Mountain Clan drama immensely amusing, but hate to get dragged into the politics. Most Swordancers will suggest the most drastic option. Why deal with a shitty leader, when you can just kill him?
They don't have much of an opinion on humans. They find magic fascinating and its one of the few things they fear.
They've like. never seen a Warden or Redling. Reactions would be mixed.
They're superstitious and carry out a lot of little rituals, have totems/symbols and worship the sun, but they're not terribly religious. They don't have many religious figures; outside of folk heroes and moralistic tales. As a result they don't really have any priests or shamans. The closest to a holy person they have are the Nightcallers.
Nightcallers are basically council-backed assassins lmao. i have a whole thing to draw for them
