Music of Lands Between
Today I really want to ramble about the importance of music we can hear from Elden Ring NPCs bc it makes me feel A LOT. Here's a small video compilation
One of the things that make fictional world building actually GOOD and believable for me is the existence of art in the world. Often art is an urge to express the feelings in reaction to some events or to just cope; it's a catharsis. If the fictional world has history, it would have art history as well. What strikes me about the existence of music in Lands Between is the fact that this world is broken and ruined; and yet...there's an urge to create. The culture still exists and develops. The fact that the developers included these little details in the game's world makes it feel alive.
1) A page playing flute. It seems that they're playing it by the graveyard? I love how this melody fits the ambient music of Leyndell...and the atmosphere of it, too; the grief and the pain and the sombre hope in this city.
2) Chanting Winged Dame and her song of lament. What is interesting, is that the lyrics have a meaning - she signs about the sadness of the fate of this world. Beautiful song and I love that we can hear it from afar.
3) Nomadic Merchant's song. I love how sombre it is, I love how uniquely their culture is designed, I love the fact that the fingers are animated in sync with this melody, I love how it reflects the mood of the environment. They've lost everything, but the music, the important part of their culture, is still with them.
4) The songs of the Ancestral Follower Shamans is what made this place unique and otherworldly to me, such beautiful voice.
5) Frenzied Nomad surrounded by its people who went insane because of the Flame of Frenzy. Love the horrific contrast between the jovial melody and the horrid environment.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

The Role of Sound in Shamanic Practices
Tumblr media
Sound plays a crucial role in shamanic practices across various cultures. It is used to facilitate altered states of consciousness, perform healing rituals, and communicate with the spirit world. Sound is regarded as one of the most effective ways of establishing connections with the spirit realm, since it travels through space, permeates visual and physical barriers, and conveys information from the unseen world. Sound, therefore, is a means of "relationship" as well as a "transformation" of energy. Here are the key ways sound is utilized in shamanism:
Inducing Altered States of Consciousness
Rhythmic Drumming and Percussion:
Repetition and Rhythm: Drumming at specific rhythms (typically 4-7 beats per second) can induce trance states. The repetitive, monotonous sound helps to alter brainwave patterns, promoting a shift from normal waking consciousness to a trance state.
Instruments: Common percussion instruments include drums, rattles, and clappers. Each produces a distinct sound that can affect the practitioner's state of mind.
Vocalizations:
Chanting and Singing: Shamans use their voices to produce chants, songs, and mantras. These vocalizations can have a calming, focusing effect, aiding in the trance induction.
Overtone Singing: Some traditions use overtone or throat singing, which produces multiple pitches simultaneously, creating a complex sound environment conducive to trance.
Ambient Sounds:
Natural Sounds: Environmental sounds like flowing water, wind, and animal calls are often incorporated into rituals, enhancing the sensory experience and facilitating altered consciousness.
2. Facilitating Communication with the Spirit World
Spiritual Dialogues:
Invocation and Prayer: Shamans use sound to call upon spirits, deities, or ancestors. These sounds can include specific prayers, chants, or songs that are believed to attract or summon spiritual entities.
Response Mechanism: Sound can also be a medium through which spirits are believed to respond, with shamans interpreting these auditory phenomena as messages from the spiritual realm.
Ritualistic Soundscapes:
Ceremonial Spaces: The acoustics of ceremonial spaces (like caves or specially designed ritual chambers) are used to amplify and enrich sound, creating an immersive environment that enhances spiritual communication.
Echoes and Resonance: Natural acoustics, such as echoes and resonances in caves or built structures, may be interpreted as the voices of spirits or deities responding to the shaman.
3. Healing and Therapeutic Uses
Sound Healing:
Restorative Frequencies: Certain sounds and rhythms are believed to have healing properties, restoring balance and harmony to the body and mind.
Instrumental Healing: Instruments like drums, flutes, and singing bowls are used to produce sounds that are thought to facilitate physical and emotional healing.
Diagnostic Sounds:
Listening to the Body: Some shamanic practices involve listening to the body’s sounds (like heartbeats or breaths) to diagnose illness or imbalance.
Healing Chants and Songs: Specific chants or songs are used to target different ailments, with the shaman's voice considered a powerful healing tool.
4. Enhancing Rituals and Ceremonies
Ritual Structure:
Sound Cues: Sound signals different phases of a ritual, marking transitions from one state or activity to another.
Community Involvement: Collective chanting, singing, or drumming involves the community, reinforcing social bonds and shared spiritual experiences.
Symbolic Sounds:
Animal Sounds: Mimicking animal sounds or using instruments that produce similar effects can symbolize the presence or assistance of animal spirits.
Elemental Sounds: Sounds representing natural elements (like thunder drums for storms or rain sticks for water) invoke the power and presence of these elements in rituals.
5. Cultural and Contextual Variations
Regional Practices:
Cultural Diversity: Different cultures have unique shamanic traditions with specific instruments, vocal techniques, and sound rituals. For example, Siberian shamans might use drum patterns distinct from those used by Amazonian shamans.
Contextual Adaptations: The use of sound in shamanism can vary depending on the context, such as healing, divination, or community ceremonies.
Technological Integration:
Modern Adaptations: Contemporary shamans may integrate modern musical instruments and technology, such as electronic soundscapes, to enhance traditional practices.
Conclusion
Sound is an integral element of shamanic practices, serving as a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds. Through rhythmic drumming, chanting, and the use of resonant spaces, shamans induce altered states of consciousness, facilitate communication with spirits, and perform healing rituals. The study of these acoustic practices through archaeoacoustics can deepen our understanding of ancient shamanic traditions and their enduring impact on cultural rituals and spiritual practices today.

Love & War
"Everything is fair in love and war."
Epilogue
Tumblr media
Years had passed since the birth of Seol, and the House of Gladiolus had witnessed countless moments of joy, growth, and love. Seol had grown into a beautiful young woman, inheriting her mother’s grace and her father’s strength. She was admired and loved by everyone in Goguryeo, known for her kindness and wisdom.
As the years went by, Seol had attracted the attention of many suitors, but it was a young noble named Jihoon from the neighboring kingdom of Baekje who had won her heart. Jihoon was a brave and noble warrior, much like Seonghwa, and he respected and adored Seol deeply.
The day of Seol’s wedding arrived, and the House of Gladiolus buzzed with excitement and anticipation. The same halls that once echoed with the sounds of Seol’s childhood laughter now thrummed with the preparations for her wedding. Beautiful decorations adorned every corner, and the fragrance of fresh flowers filled the air.
Seonghwa stood in the garden, watching the final preparations with a mixture of pride and melancholy. He had always known this day would come, but now that it was here, he found it hard to let go. Y/N approached him, sensing his thoughts.
“She’s grown into a remarkable woman,” Y/N said, slipping her hand into Seonghwa’s.
“She has,” Seonghwa agreed, squeezing her hand. “But it’s hard to believe our little girl is getting married.”
Y/N smiled softly. “She’s found her happiness, just like we did. We should be grateful.”
Seonghwa nodded, his eyes misting over. “I am grateful. More than words can express.”
The ceremony was held in the palace’s grand courtyard, where Seol and Jihoon exchanged vows under a canopy of blossoms. The air was filled with the sound of drums and flutes, and the sun shone brightly, casting a golden glow over the proceedings.
As Seol walked down the aisle, she radiated beauty and grace. Her hanbok, a mix of red and white, shimmered in the sunlight. Seonghwa and Y/N stood by, watching with hearts full of pride. When Seol reached Jihoon, she turned to her parents and bowed deeply, a gesture of respect and gratitude.
Seonghwa stepped forward, his voice steady despite the emotion in his heart. “Jihoon, you are a fine man. Take care of our daughter, cherish her, and respect her. She is the light of our lives.”
Jihoon bowed respectfully. “I will, General. I promise to honor and protect her with my life.”
The ceremony continued with the traditional rites. Seol and Jihoon exchanged gifts, bowed to their elders, and shared their vows. As the shaman blessed their union, Seonghwa and Y/N couldn’t help but reflect on their own journey.
After the ceremony, a grand feast was held. The palace gardens were filled with laughter, music, and celebration. Seol and Jihoon danced under the stars, surrounded by their loved ones. Seonghwa and Y/N watched from a distance, their hearts full of joy and contentment.
Later that evening, as the festivities continued, Seonghwa and Y/N found a quiet moment together in the garden. The same garden where they had shared countless memories and where their love had blossomed.
“It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come,” Y/N said, resting her head on Seonghwa’s shoulder.
Seonghwa wrapped his arm around her. “It is. But I wouldn’t change a single moment. Every hardship, every joy, it led us to this.”
Y/N smiled, looking up at the stars. “And now, our daughter starts her own journey. I hope it’s filled with as much love and happiness as ours.”
Seonghwa kissed her forehead, a gesture that had become their symbol of love and comfort. “It will be. She has the best parts of both of us.”
As the night continued, Seonghwa and Y/N stood together, watching their daughter dance with her new husband. The future was bright, and the House of Gladiolus would continue to be a place of love, strength, and new beginnings.
And so, with hearts full of gratitude and love, Seonghwa and Y/N embraced the next chapter of their lives, knowing that their legacy would live on through Seol and the generations to come.

Ocarina in the Form of a Seated Figure
Tairona
1100-1500
This ocarina, a flute-like instrument, depicts a shaman sitting on a double-headed crocodile bench and wearing elaborate garments, a large, feathered headdress, and a bat or crocodile mask. The ceremonial bench and both animals are associated with shamanic power. Crocodiles are powerful symbols that relate to fertility and the underworld because of their water- and land-based habitat. The musician would blow through a hole at the top of the headdress and place his fingers on the holes to control the tones. The Kogi people of Colombia still play ocarinas.

It was said that Eywa was the one who chose. Everything in Eywa’eveng was determined by her. Even her children or their loved ones. Everyone believed that, but Tonowari didn’t. He believed in his own destiny. The great Alpha, Olo’eyktan of the Metkayina, had chosen a partner.
That person was the strong, young Tsahìk Ronal. Still, Tonowari decided to follow his own path in life. He was not sensitive to Omega scent. He held out until the visitors arrived...
Jake Sully, an Omega of the Omatikaya clan. Too gorgeous to describe.
Tonowari could swear he had never seen anyone so beautiful.
The body, the scent... everything came together to form Jake Sully. He was a new visitor, but he had come with a family: the Alpha female, Neytiri, was Jake’s mate.
Oh Eywa, was this his punishment?
When he met those amber eyes, his heart screamed. He was his destiny.
Ma Eywa, what should he do?
That sin created a spark in his chest. Tonowari refused to accept his wife’s pleas. She wanted to stop the Sully family from coming to live among them. Although in his mind he knew that someday danger would come, right now he just wanted the man to stay.
His crush on the beautiful Omega was overwhelming. Tonowari had changed. Meanwhile, Jake was oblivious.
Every night, the two secretly met away from the tribe. Two bodies united as one following the rhythm of love. He didn’t care if the forest beauty would give birth to another half-breed or not.
“Ah... Tonowari,” a hoarse moan sounded in his ear. Like wanting to add more fuel to the listener’s fire. “Harder...”
“...”
There was no response from the Olo’eyktan but Jake knew. The reef man had no patience. A hand grabbed his leg tightly. The sudden and violent thrust brought tears to his eyes.
But also, happiness. Jake couldn’t separate himself from the Alpha. Tonowari, on the other hand, was too drunk in pleasure to walk away.
“Ah, yes ah- right there!”
The other man’s words were very taunting. Tonowari stopped moving and kissed the skin all over his soft neck with extreme moderation.
“You smell so good, Jake.”
“Ah...”
“My Omega.”
In the end, the smell of the forest male spread everywhere. The other’s large body expanded and pierced through the walls like a wild current.
Tonowari was going to give Jake a new life. One that the All-Mother would love.
Oh Eywa, this sin would be too difficult to escape from.
Still... please, Great Mother. Give him more of this sweetness, and he would be happy until she decided to punish him.

Tumblr media
big thanks to The Youkai Cafe discord for the fun questions about our OCs, with this question coming from @jadebrightwind...thought it might be fun to share my answers on tumblr!
ANSWER #1: Rei travels back in time to her own childhood
Rei lost her parents at a young age. Her aunt (her only living family) was supposed to take her in, but she declined, leaving Rei adrift. If Rei went back in time to an era in which they were all alive, perhaps back to Rei's childhood, I can absolutely see her befriending her aunt and parents with three goals in mind.
The first goal is to say goodbye to her parents. To spend time with them, really bask in their presence, because she doesn't have a chance in her current timeline.
The second goal is to understand her aunt better, in hopes of soothing some of the hurt still lingering from her aunt's betrayal/abandonment. She'd befriend her aunt and try to get to know her. Maybe even change her mind about why she abandoned Rei. But time is fixed, supposedly, so Rei has little hope of pulling that off.
The third goal (and perhaps the most important one) is to tell her younger self that everything will be OK. She wants to give her younger self the advice she'll need to make it through the next few years--the advice Rei was never given but could have used in a crucial formative moment.
ANSWER #2: Rei travels to Himiko's time period (AKA the Yayoi Period)
As we've learned in The Sight Unseen, Rei has an ancestor who was an ancient warrior queen, shaman, and psychic. This woman (Himiko, whose soul is currently sealed inside an ancient mirror) is the supernatural source from whom Rei draws her powers.
If Rei got sent back in time to Himiko's time period, I can absolutely see her tracking down her ancestor, kicking in the palace doors, and demanding A TRAINING ARC.
"Hey Grandma, you would not B E L I E V E the bullshit I'm going through in a few thousand years, so BUCKLE THE FUCK UP, you're my sensei until this time travel bullshit resolves itself! Eye of the tiger, lady! Let's fuckin' goooo!"
Cue the training montage set to a backdrop of shakuhachi flute and shamisen music. Let it be known Himiko would make Genkai's training camp look like a preschool.
ANSWER #3: The Roaring 20s
Because the first answer was so goddamn depressing, here's another "fun" answer to lighten the mood of this post: Rei would head to 1920s America so she could attend a bunch of parties and learn the period-accurate dance moves (and also make out with a few mobsters just for the fun of it).
THANK YOU ALL FOR READING! As always, you can read The Sight Unseen on AO3. Click Here!
