A Deadly Covenant by Michael Stanley
A Deadly Covenant
By Michael Stanley
Orenda Books
Publication Date: 8 December 2023
When I heard that there was a forthcoming novel in the Detective Kubu series I was excited to read it, particularly as it is a follow up to Facets Of Death which I had thoroughly reading a couple of years ago. This earlier book featured a young David ‘Kubu’ Bengu straight out of university and onto his first case which was an unforgettable diamond heist. While the writing team of Michael Sears and Stanley Trollip who write under the name Michael Stanley have written another six novels and two sets of short stories within the series featuring an older and more experienced Kubu, I am happy to follow the start of his career when he is still learning from his elder and superior officers such as his formidable assistant superintendent Mabaku.
Set in the late 1990s A Deadly Covenant like Facets Of Death portrays a Botswana undergoing great change. When during the development of a water irrigation process a skeleton is found in the remote village of Shakawe in the northwest of the country close to the borders of Namibia and Angola, it is gradually revealed to the reader how long it will take for the authorities to examine the body. The construction worker who makes the find knows he cannot continue working, but nor can he immediately contact his manager. He must either work a long distance to a house with a telephone or wait until the evening when he is due to be picked up. Neither is an attractive option under a scorching sun.
Kubu has been somewhat idling his time after the excitement of the heist when Mabaku informs him that he and pathologist Ian McGregor will have to travel to Shakawe so they can examine the body. For a young man who has rarely visited the countryside, this presents an intriguing but equally daunting prospect. The beauty and vastness of the land is shown through the book’s vocabulary while the convoluted journey is another reminder of the limited infrastructure at the time. The discovery of the human remains has caused considerable interest and when Kubu arrives he encounters a crowd of interested spectators including one man who believes the body could belong to his son who went missing 25 years earlier. Furthermore, while the water piping is driven by the hereditary local leader, known as the Kgosi, there are others who are more resentful and one woman who is very hostile to the process. Yet when the untouched scene of discovery is examined by McGregor he very soon realises that there are an additional eight skeletons on the site. Yet while these remains appear to be over a decade old, it soon becomes clear that Kubu and McGregor will be assisting the local police with some more recent suspicious deaths. A bushman known as Selelo, seen in the vicinity of the village is seen as a credible or at least convenient suspect for the police chief Balopi.
When Kubu raises his doubts about Selelo’s confession, he is joined by Mabaku who challenges Balopi on his approach. Kubu gains the respect of his superior by revealing his suspicions about the Kgosi concerning corruption and also suggestions of a potentially serious historical crime. The joint investigations into the historical and more recent deaths are overshadowed by a power struggle driven by the cultural differences between the local and urban police. Towards the book’s climax more unexpected crimes occur which finally shine a light on some hidden secrets. The roots to the mystery have been lain with the bones in the history of the region in a revelatory and multi-faceted story. A Deadly Covenant more than satisfies as a crime fiction novel and successfully fleshes out further the character of David ‘Kubu’ Bengu. As well as rich descriptions of the countryside, the novel reveals some of the contrasts between those in privileged positions and those within poverty within Botswana society providing a fascinating insight into a disappearing way of life.
Many thanks to Orenda Books for an advance copy of A Deadly Covenant and to Anne Cater of Random Things Tours for inclusion on the blog tour. Please check out the other reviews on this tour as shown on the above tour poster.
