Q and A with TOMMI MUSTURI
Recently following my trip to Europe, I collected a few comic books from artists in various countries. Mr. Tommi Musturi operates out of Finland, and has published a weird, whimsical series of wordless comics featuring a ghostly vaguely homer simpson-esque character and his adventures known as “Samuel.” This is the 2nd installment, and I decided to correspond via email a Q and A. He responded with some very thoughtful answers and I’m happy to share them with you here.
-Aaron Shunga

1. I grew up reading Moomintroll by Tove Janson as a kid. I notice a mysterious, fantastic quality in both her work and yours. What do you think the connection is here if any?
I suppose every Finnish kid has some connection with the Moomins. When I grew up I read the Moomin novels illustrated by Tove. My sister who is nine years younger grew up along the 90s Japanese animation and the generations after that were suddenly surrounded by all the merchandise, a new comic magazine drawn in the style of the 90s animation and so on.
It took until I was adult I really started to read the Moomin comics. They were originally made for adults and I remember trying to read them as a kid was kind of tricky. They were also all black and white which was of course lame in eyes of a 10-yo. The Moomin comic appeared (and appears) in several newspapers around Finland so it was familiar as well. However, an early 80s magazine version of the stories with covers taken from the late 70s puppet animation (I think it was made in Poland) existed for few years. I’ve been collecting those on my adult age. Didn’t know it existed back it was getting released.
What I still prefer are the actual novels. Beside being an artist, Tove was a great writer as well. The novels are more surreal and irrational as well. The atmosphere is really stong in all of them.
The comic version of Moomintroll is of course all great stuff as well. Notice that big part of Moomin comics were actually drawn by Tove’s brother Lars. I think for Tove’s career it was essential that she had such great people around her helping with things here and there. In the end she wanted to be a painter, not a comic artist. That’s kind of sad though but maybe presents the times and the fact that comics were seen merely as ‘cartoons for kids’ or something immoral. There was indeed a nice recent exhibition of her paintings in Finland just couple of years ago. It was not that bad but I still prefer the writings, comic & illustration work she made.
Anyway, there’s a Moomin museum in my current hometown Tampere and they present quite a wide variety of original art as well. I must say it’s some of the best drawing work I’ve ever seen. I could watch those small detailed pieces again and again and I think most of the people who visit the place feel the same. It’s inspiring of course. Especially her use of light and shadow. Sometimes there are almost no outlines at all. The forms appear in depth.
So, I think Moomins somehow come in our 'mother’s milk’ over here. I can’t really say that they inspired me to do this or that. However, I see things I share with Tove – there is sort of melancholic level that’s always present there below the surface, the taste of life is something I also aim at (meaning I tend to go through a variety of emotions in my work), she respects nature as well and there’s this sort of simplicity in it all, though the content is kinda complex.
However, if you at some point try to draw the Moomintroll you’ll notice how damn difficult it is.
2. One drawing that stands out to me in the book is an old man with a word balloon full of gestural abstract ink brush strokes. I feel that this is an aesthetic choice others try to enforce upon you. What is your opinion on Jackson Pollock and Gary Panter?
That image was indeed based on an idea that some people tell their views too late. So I present Samuel as this old alcoholic guy without any friends shouting alone in his dirty apartment. There is no one to listen to what he says so the language might as well something abstract. He could basicly say anything, have any opinion and there is no effect to the world around him. What makes this merely meta notation on Samuel’s comics in general is the fact that Samuel has been a mute comic until now. So, this was the first time the guy spoke out. Of course, Samuel as a character does not want to end up like that so the image of the old guy is merely a possible future. I think Samuel in general is much stronger indeed. Though he does not speak (or have any expressions on his face) his acts are usually statements to the world around him.
I’ve actually drawn now another image where Samuel speaks. There’s a small ad I did for Kuti magazine (a free Finnish comics newspaper, with English subtitles so get it!) with Samuel standing on Trump’s cut-off head and speaking to the reader. So maybe he’ll speak from now on but only in advertisements. This’d be perfect 'sell-out’. We all love capitalism and will do anything for it, won’t we?
In this 2nd book ('Simply Samuel’ that is) I’ve pictured several moments of Samuel’s possible life. So along this 'image of him as old’ I’ve drawn him as semen, showing how her mother and father met, how he gets younger and goes back to his mother’s vagina etc. It’s sort of play with time which this 2nd book does a lot. Sometimes time goes backwards. I’m fooling with the reader as I like that kind of stuff as a reader as well. It keeps you awake.
What comes to Pollock and Panter. Well, good artists of course. I indeed did a study on Pollock in art school. That’s like 20 years ago. I like his works but it’s of course bit out-dated these days. I wouldn’t have wanted to know him as a person. What comes to Gary, he is of course been an inpiration for long time. I used to run the publishing house Huuda Huuda (we quite a year ago in December 2016) and we ended up releasing a book from Gary in Finnish. Or actually it was two books as we made this big-size doublebook (that one can read from both ends) with both Jimbo’s Inferno and Purgatory. This was quite a project indeed and took us +one year to produce. The first translator gave up with Purgatory but the 2nd (Teemu Manninen, a Finnish poet) made great job with it. I spent two months lettering it all by hand. It was one of the most painful lettering jobs I’ve ever done. I think there was a tear in my eye at some point. Anyway, the book turned out great and I think the version of Purgatory is still the only translation of it. I remember that Gary emailed me after the project something like “I thought you couldn’t do it” which was the best complement I could’ve got.
What I like in Gary’s work is that is sort of 'a mash-up’ of different styles. I think 'style’ is merely a capitalistic tool and if you’re doing art you should try to stay far from it or put it all through a mincer.
3. Compared to your last book, there is much more violence and action. What led you to this decision? You have several scenes in which Samuel dies, via car crash or by fists.
In Samuel’s case it’s obvious that he can die whenever I want. I’ve always had this idea that the his novels are sort of 'longplays of a computer game’. So basicly he may die at any point and then I start from scratch in the next story. This is kind of reliefing thing for myself as an artist though I don’t really 'like’ to kill or torture him. It just happens. I like dark humour of course as that’s the key thing to stay sane 2017.
Anyway, I myself also noticed that this 2nd book of his is much more violent compared to the 1st one that’s overall mood was merely 'beautiful and melancholic’. I did not have any plans to do this so it all just happened. I’ve tried to analyze myself why it came out like this and the only thing I could think of is that it presents the vibes of the times. It is no secret I’ve felt utterly frustrated with what mankind is doing for the world that’s raising them. It think this frustration and pure anger somehow came visible in this new book. What comes to action, this 2nd book is more complex and has TWICE the amount of ideas in it compared to the 1st book. It’s more fragmented and complex in away as well. So, there’s more going on compared to the 1st book that was merely really calm in it’s storytelling. I might go back to that if I do a 3rd book.

4. There are instructional elements to your story, as if one were reading a manual on how to build a hobo guitar or bake artisinal bread. This reminds me of Chris Ware. What are your opinions on his work?
I’ve never read that much of Ware indeed I must say. I’ve got some 90s Acme magazines, some big Quimby-book and Jimmy Corrigan but I haven’t really read what he has done the past ten years. It’s good stuff of course but I think I respect him more because of his experiments with storytelling than because the actual content. He is one of the greatest contemporary comic artists of course, there’s no doubt. When it comes to his info comics I think I’ve seen this kind
stuff in early American comics & kids’ magazines. Silly Symphonies used to have the same kind of cut & paste parts. So I suppose his idea to use info comics came from there.
Anyway, in general I don’t read that much comics these days. I think most of comics are not very good indeed. I get couple of meters (in shelf-space) of comics every year that I try to go through though. However, if I had to choose in-between of a comic or a novel I’d choose the latter. Literature is inspiring. If there are maybe tens of important comic books ever made, in literature there are thousands.
Anyway, going back to my own drawing… when I was a teen I think I aimed to simplify what I did on paper. I liked Didier Comés and Charles Burns for example, both having very clear images. We had a really good comic store in Tampere during early 90s, with a mailorder of course (I lived on the countryside with my parents back then) so I bought a lot of stuff that FB and D&Q put out, along with lots of material from France and Belgium (like Freon & Amok releases, some Atak’s early stuff, Reprodukt’s releases etc). Anyway, when I was around 18-yo my drawings were very close to what my graphic novel The Book of Hope looks like – very clear line, simplified colours and so on. When I went to art school I indeed tried to 'destroy’ this style that I was already bored with. So I started to experiment with lots of different styles, equipment, techniques and sizes and even went to something that was more realistic. When I used these maybe more realistic styles with comics they never really worked that well. At some points (after few years and lots of work made) I came to a conclusion that in comic narration the art should be somehow simplified – it’s kind of unseperataple part of the comic storytelling. So, I went back to this simplified old style and started to work on The Book of Hope. Later I developed this mathematic thin & clear line for Samuel. Both of these works look very oldschool in a way. This is a trick of course as the content is much more complex than it appears. So, the reason I ended up in these styles was merely a result of experimenting and going through it all and process what I had done.
The info comics I’ve included in the recent Samuel book (there was some in the 1st book as well, originally published 2009) are actually inspired by a Finnish book from 1930s – Kodin taitosanakirja ('The Home Dictionary of Skills’). That’s a book that was sold even after wartime, there are tens of updated editions of it. The idea of this (thick!) book is simply: to tell how you should do things that are essential for life. So, basicly there are 'simple instructions’ on how to build a house (!), a boat, make porridge, rye bread and so on. It’s such a rich book so full of information that I keep on going back to it every now and then. Most of the things you wonder about can be found from it indeed. Anyway, what I like the most in this case is the basic idea of the book. That is what inspired me to add info comics in Samuel’s book as well. I didn’t want them to be just any funny informative comics but instructions that give value for life. First there was an idea to make a seperate big book with only these instructions but in the end I thought it might work better if I mix them with illustrations and more normal comics. In general I like diy-culture, repairing broken stuff and so on. It’s a view on life in all: you can do most of it by yourself. That’s could also be a motto for Samuel.
4. I notice in general the very clean, almost vector like aesthetic. Do you find yourself at peace with technology?
I did live pretty much nerdish childhood; Got my first computer (Commodore 64) when I was 9-yo, collected lots of different things etc. Anyway, I gave up playing games quite early and got involved with sub culture called 'demoscene’. It’s sort of audivisual culture where people create things together in small 'groups’. I ended up making graphics while some others in our group (that’s called 'Extend’ and it still exists) made musich and code. So I basicly learnt to draw on computer (pixel by pixle back then, with a joystick, it was mid-80s) before on paper. My relationship with computers and technology is kind of natural I think. For art it’s one tool next to a brush, lightbox, canvas etc. However, I prefer working on paper most of my time. Never owned a tablet or even tried one. The basic advice ’d be that one should always know what he or she is about to do when turning on the computer. You can easily see it in art if somebody is just trying out things in Photoshop without much knowing where to aim at. Working on paper means you do more mistakes and mistakes are indeed the key thing to learn something new. You should look at the mistake and think how you could use it. When drawing straight on computer people can try to get 'the perfect line’ as long as they want – even a crappy artist can aim at something out of his or hers artistic cababilities and reach it. However, the bad thing with this is that it is usually not his or hers image that was the target but an idea of something someone had made a specific technique or some image from subconscious. I mean: if you’re not aware of what you’re doing, this all usually leads to the actual result that they had in mind. With my own work I like to change the plan on the way all the time so the result is more an individual than the plan. I think it’s better to learn to live with the mistakes than trying to avoid them.
With Samuel and The Book of Hope I did all the colouring on computer. But for example in Samuel you can see 'a shadow’ layer on all the colours. This shadow was indeed as well done on paper so I basicly have always two originals for each Samuel page. The originals of the shadows look often like childish Sin City. In both books the colouring is bright and simple, kind of 'dead’ as well. In Samuel’s case the colours are important part of the actual storytelling. It’s really veeery slow process indeed and I don’t know why I do it like I do it. Well, maybe it’s ok not to reason everything.
5. There is a scene when Samuel enters a cave, and a panorama from above at three quarter degrees reveals a dungeon full of peril. Is this a reference to videogames, of the fantasy RPG genre? Do you think videogames influence your work?
As told before, there has been sort of idea of Samuel’s life 'as a game’ but that’s pretty much it. I stopped playing computer & video games early 90s to focus on doing stuff with the machines. I was also aware I could easily develope an addiction with games so it was better to focus on something else. Anyway, I still go back to that idea of a game every now and then when starting a new Samuel episode. It’s kind of liberating as 'with the new life’ you can start everything from the beginning. This doesn’t apply for OUR real lives of course, so I’m on a bit thin ice here.
This specific spread in the recent Samuel book was intended to be 'a labyrinth of daily routines’. The whole episode is kind of melancholic, Samuel is not doing much, just wandering around, throwing some stones, collecting fruits. On top of a hill he finds this cave and goes in just to find a labyrinth full of dangers, requirements, responsibilities, pressure etc. He manages to get through it (with minor damage) and gets out to find this paradise like environment again. I suppose this is a good example on how I use symbolism in Samuel’s stories and in all my comics indeed. The simple idea of this piece is of course that sometimes our lives are struggled (that’s part of a life, probable) and once you get through the struggles you will find something better. Very simple, spiced with small nuances in action.
What comes to games, I do actually like to play in general. I did sports for fun when I was a kid and teen. Started to play street basketball again couple of years ago… that’s more for fun as well. Anyway, we’ve tried some oldschool stuff recently. Indeed we made our own playing card game with my fiancee Tiina. It’s called 'Little Red Ridinghood’ and it’s indeed one of the best 2-player card games (with the normal pack) I’ve played. Suppose we should spread it around at some point. A year ago we indeed started to play the original Dungeons & Dragons again (after +20 years) which is kind of entertaining and educating because the world around the characters is so strong and evil one can die basicly any moment. I haven’t (yet) found much inspiration for my comics in it though. During summer we usually take some dices along when going in the forest or on the lake, play some Yatzy or stuff. I like the simplicity in that. Also playing Othello or Go with stones. Anyway, I never even tried PS or Xbox or something recent. Don’t have a smart phone either. There’s some lousy golf game in my crappy phone. It’s kind of entertaining though. What I like in “playing” in general is that it still very much the same experience as when you were a kid. So, I think all the adults should play all the time indeed. That’d make the world much better place already.

So, most times I get tagged in a tag game I put that post in my bookmarks for later cause I want to finish going through my dash first. Thing is, if it’s something that’ll take a little longer to answer I won’t do it immediately afterwards. And then it stays in my bookmarks, and then I forget even though it’s right in front of my eyes. And then I feel guilty when I notice the post again. Like this one.
rules: list 10 books that have touched your life in some way. they can be anything, even a short comic book, and there is no right or wrong answer. just 10 books that have stayed with you. tag 10 people including the person who tagged you.
I’m really sorry, @coldsaturn, that this took so long! >_< Back when you tagged me I wanted to link you to the time I already answered this, but then I thought I should give explanations why these books touched me just like you did - and realized I couldn’t even name reasons for some of them except that I remember liking them immensly back then. Now, since it took me so long I’ve read some more books and actually found two that deserve to be on this list so I’ll start with those.
1. The Rest Of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness Everyone who loves to read YA fantasy or postapocalyptic stories should read this book! It’s refreshing to read about people who aren’t the protagonists in some great story but, well, just live there when said story happens. What would be the main plot in some other novel is summed up in a few sentences at the beginning of each chapter while the story of this book is about a normal teenage boy trying to figure out who he is and what he wants. That he lives in a world where big supernatural events happen every few years and that his best friend happens to be a demigod doesn’t matter for him and his friends. They aren’t indie kids after all, and everyone knows that the big stories happen only to indie kids. The way this book shows up the cliché plot points of YA fantasy is great, because sometimes you do wonder what other people in that world would think of what’s happening, or where the Random Guy Who Saves The Day™ suddenly comes from - and here is this answer.
2. The Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx I was debating if I should list this but I think it deserves to be mentioned. Consisting of short diary entries spanning a year and some equally short explanations by the people involved that were added for publication this book is a rather quick read that gives insight in the life of an addict who happens to be a rockstar. A great reminder how drugs can destroy a life and an excellent source for writers on the POV of a drug abuser. Also, if you buy this book you do some good cause a part of the cost gets donated to Nikki Sixx’ fundraising initiative for an organisation that takes care of runaway and homeless youth.
3. Inferno by Dan Brown If someone asked me what book I would recommend for everyone to read it’d be this. Dan Brown is the best thriller author, he always manages to write novels you don’t want to put done until you’re finished. The series about Robert Langdon is always like a treasure hunt where he has to figure out one puzzle only to find another with beautifully woven in historic facts and entirely plausible theories. Inferno is no different yet it is. It not only entertains and gives you some interesting knowledge, it makes you think. Really think. Because this book is about trying to stop a Mad Scientist who wants to stop the overpopulation of the human species. It doesn’t gloss over the fact that overpopulation will in fact become a huge problem even though it is never talked about. And it makes you question which side you want to win.
4. The Dispossessed. An Ambiguous Utopia by Ursula K. Le Guin Sci-Fi at it’s finest. With the current developments in politics I find myself thinking about this book again. It’s about a scientist who lives on a planet with no laws and visits the neighbouring planet with a society similar to ours. While ‘no laws’ might make you think about chaos this is a story where anarchy worked out fine. People on that planet learn to share everything and respect each other from the very beginning, and the occasional black sheep gets punished by others. It’s a society based on kindness and respect, not materialism and egocentricism. And the book shows what someone from there experiences in a society like ours.
5. The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón The first novel that features the Library of Forgotten Books, and the one that does so extensively. It’s a hommage to books and how they can touch and influence your life. Truly beautiful, both in story and writing. This was one of those books that really didn’t let me go for days and weeks after I finished it.
6. All for the Game (known here as The Foxhole Court) by Nora Sakavic I love angst, I love to see characters suffering, and I love to see characters fight the impossible. This is a trilogy that has all of that and more. I never would’ve thought that a sport setting would appeal to me but this story is just perfect with the incorporation of the (fictional) violent sport exy. A boy on the run who dares to follow his dream which leads to danger catching up again, an emotionless boy who takes promises too serious, an alcoholic (ex)superstar, a whole team made up of young adults who carry their demons, the greatest coach with the best motivational speeches, a superstar with daddy issues, the yakuza, a mass murderer - everything about these books is amazing!
7. PS I Love You by Cecelia Ahern Yes, I do read romance novels! And I’ve been a fan of Cecelia Ahern from this book onwards. All her stories show life in a beautiful way, and PS I Love You does so with a bittersweet story about the big romantic love and finding your way back to happiness after you lost it. The protagonist’s husband died of cancer and left her twelve letters containing one task for each month of the next year. It starts with little things and goes on to finding more confidence and making great memories. It shows that love conquers death, and that true love means you’re able to let the other go when you have to.
8. Look Who’s Back by Timur Vermes A book that struck a nerve because it’s scarily believable. Hitler awakens in 2015 Berlin and gets mistaken for a very devoted comedian leading to him starting a career on TV. In the beginning it’s hard to stop laughing with all the hilarity of the misunderstandings, but as the story goes on a feeling of dread grows when more and more people start to agree with him and you can see that it would happen in real life too.
9. Killing the Shadows by Val McDermid Brillant and thrilling crime novel about crime authors getting murdered like the victims in their own novels. Before each new murder discovery stands the actual killing scene from those author’s novels, and Val McDermid managed to write each of those in a writing style different to hers. To one day write like her is the dream.
10. Julian’s House by Judith Hawkes Difficult to decide on the last one to put on this list. In the end I went with this one even though it’s been ages since I’ve read it, because it’s the reason I believe in ghosts. A couple moves into a supposedly haunted house and finds out it is. Doesn’t sound like much but I remember it as a thrilling story that’s different than expected. It taught me that energy can neither be created from nothing nor simply vanish, it can only be transformed. And since souls are energy...
After all this time it took me to actually sit down and write this I’d feel weird to tag people and expect them to do it. If you want to do it I’d be happy if you do and tag me so I can check it out though! :)
#i got tagged#this took me two hours#WTF#why am i taking so long to write a few sentences about books i love

Chapter 1: Rabbit Hole to Hell
Dante had chased fires for as long as he could remember.
It was hard not to, with a curiosity as endless as his. He'd burned himself on the stove despite his mother's warnings and he'd burned himself in the sun despite the protection his father slathered over him. They were both so busy with their work that Dante wandered aimlessly towards the fires.
He drew friends for tea parties, but those niceties grew boring. He counted eyeballs and their parts to himself in play, but it always ended on the same numbers. Searching for a proper adventure, he traipsed down the winding mountain trail behind their home.
(He was barely seven. Not even seven.)
(It was supposed to be a birthday gift.)
Usually, his mother or father held his hand the whole way down. If he was lucky, he'd get to play with Damon and Damon's Nanny. Mostly, though, he counted to himself until his mother became upset and his father carried him out of their space.
He was left alone more often than not.
Dante liked being on his own.
The path wound quite a ways, shrouded in shadow by the late afternoon sun. Dante wished to watch it like he could the rest of the stars. Wished he could one day go supernova just to prove he could.
Fire was unruly. Fire was fair. To bite back when handled without consideration; that was the goal Dante strove towards every day. To be known as something not to be toyed with.
At the end of the path was a dark cave. Not the iron door that usually greeted him. Someone had torn it out, maybe, and Dante peered inside, hoping to glimpse the cause of such destruction. A melting giant of slime resting in these mountains, perhaps. One of his good tea time friends with their spindly limbs and black blood, could be. Or perhaps a more traditional monster, like those in the storybooks he was so fond of.
(It wasn't a monster.)
(Dante was the monster.)
The sudden thought made him jolt back, made him doubt. What was he doing here again? Wasn't he supposed to be at school, with his friends?
Marina Royal. For gifted youth. Shadows, shadows, shadows, all sitting in rows of desks, staring at him from across the classroom.
Their blank white eyes were funny. Their stapled grins kept them laughing.
Dante shook off those foreboding images and walked down into this cavern. He'd find something fun at the end. He always did.
There were no lights, so Dante made his own. He followed the trail down, down into the heart of this beast. The deeper he went, the stuffier it seemed. Like he was inside some living thing, breathing around him and making the air musky.
(Wet and flesh walls. Eating him alive.)
He reached out to touch the wall and met with coarse rock. Enough to give him a scrape and he flinched back. So, not some belly. All the same, as he kept walking, he had the distinct impression that he was being swallowed.
The air grew thick with ash. Distantly, he could hear burning. Cackling. A steady hum, the whir of technology. Dante's parents always seemed to have spare tech around. Misfit eyeballs were his favourite. He loved pulling them apart and reassembling them in different configurations. It was something his parents actually encouraged. The differently coloured irises and each unique error were fun puzzles to solve. Which pieces fit together, which equations were correct, Dante had the most fun with those.
The ground beneath his feet gave out suddenly, without warning. He fell, fell into pitch black, unable to even scream.
He closed his eyes and curled himself into a ball, bracing for impact.
It never came.
When he opened his eyes, he was sitting on the ground in an unfamiliar and red landscape.
He stood up slowly, taking in as much of it as he could. The dirt below his now bare feet was a reddish brown. Plateaus, his mind helpfully supplied. The sky above his head was the colour of broken hearts. No clouds. No draw distance. And, situated around him in a neat little ring, was that fire he knew to be living beneath his skin.
Hell.
This was Hell.
It had to be.
He took an experimental step forward. The fire moved with him. He took in a deep breath and stretched himself up on his tippy-toes. The fire rose with his efforts. Delighted laughter bubbled up from him and he ran out to the edge of the plateau to look down into the frozen lake below, the ice just as red as the skies above.
(Simple times. Simple curiosity.)
"You certainly took your time getting here." A voice said from below him. He squeaked in surprise and tried to step out of their way. There was no one around him that he could see, however. "How dare you keep royalty waiting. Now, confirm your designation so that we may get started."
"Hi. Who're you?" Dante looked around the area once more, but it was a futile effort. At least they spoke Italian. Damon's English was hard to grasp at times. "Where are you? I'm Dante."
"No, no, that won't do." They laughed, a cruel and mechanical tone. Dante noticed the way his shadow rippled with the sound. "You're supposed to give me your designation. You're supposed to be frightened of me."
The shadow stretched out long like it was sunset, then pooled together in a spot just outside of his fires. The figure which rose from it was familiar. A friend. Their blank white eyes and stretched white smile made it unique. Different from all the other friends Dante had ever drawn. It had hair, too. Or, the impression of such.
"I am the first child, ruler of all the Kingdoms in Hell."
Dante hopped towards them with an excited, "Nice to meet you. Unless you're a part of me. In which case, it's nice to make your acquaintance again. You came out of my shadow."
The child stared at him for a moment, silent in contemplation. Silent as it loaded. Hell was for sinners and bad people. At least, that was what Sunday school always said. But Dante was much too curious to see how it really looked. Much too interested in this new friend, whom he was sure looked too familiar to just be new. Maybe even his parents would like this, would actually let him talk to them for a change.
(Never. Couldn't trust them. They caused this.)
"Designation: Inferno. Subject: Delta." The child said, its voice wholly mechanical now. Wholly devoid of familiarity. "Processing speed: bit crushed due to complications in framework."
"Ugh, again?" Complained another voice. A different voice. This one was much deeper than even Dante's father, sounded as gravelly as the stony wing beats which accompanied its arrival. "What's causing this issue? My White Rabbit won't be happy if we can't get this resolved in time."
Dante watched closely as this stately Gargoyle landed beside the shadow child. He'd seen them before adorning churches, in pictures, on the telly. This one had deep red eyes, much like his own. Had claws and a beak and wings as big as its body.
He didn't get a chance to ask anything of it, as it next advanced on him, hovering right over that circle of fire, and stabbed one of its claws right into his eye.
He screamed so loudly that he was sure he tore something in his throat.
"Hm. No response." The Gargoyle said, withdrawing its claw. The fires around Dante flared up, licking and biting, but the Gargoyle paid them no mind. It said to the child, "Subject 00, locate the anomaly within Subject Delta's framework."
The child snapped back into focus, info life. "Obviously, it's that nose of his. Gumming up the works." They said, an amused sort of taunt to their more natural tone. "I think it should get removed."
"Worth a shot, if just to isolate the code there."
The Gargoyle hunkered down, like a robot running out of batteries. The air around it hitched weirdly, pixelating and growing unfocused until it smeared the whole thing out of view. The splotches of grey that once made up its body turned into a more flesh-like colour until it sharpened right back into focus, revealing a Chimera where it once stood. A lion's head with a mane of fire, the body of a crocodile with fleshy scales, and three rows of sharp, shark-like teeth.
"Now hold still and this will go much more smoothly than last time."
It leapt at him and tore at his face with those teeth. Ripped at his body with its claws. Again, Dante screamed and the fires rose and no amount of flailing would get it off him. The pain was so searing that, as he faded from consciousness, he fell into a white void instead.
Recalibrating. Reconstructing.
Rebooting.
Dante blinked and his feet were once again on the ground of these red-brown plateaus, his body no longer torn apart. There was a hole in his face, though. He touched gingerly at the spot where his nose should have been and met with air. Surprisingly, absolutely painless. He stuck his whole hand inside the space devoid of all the important things, like his skull or blood or a brain.
"Stop messing with your code, Dante." The Gargoyle snapped, making Dante straighten up at attention. The Gargoyle was back. It held something small and fleshy between its claws. "This was, indeed, the cause of the error. Thank you for your scan, Subject 00."
"And you call me the unstable one." The child laughed, clapping its mitten hands together gleefully. There was no sound. Shadows didn't make sounds. Didn't have bones, either. Weren't constrained to things like sense and logic. "Delete the whole thing and start from scratch. This one's obviously a failure."
"You may be right. But that would be a waste of time." The Gargoyle turned its eyes sharply on Dante and he flinched. His whole body trembled from the memory of being ripped to shreds and the flames around him quivered in agreement. He had no power here. "Subject Delta. Do you know why we gifted you with this particular signature?"
(Change. Always changing.)
(Rules, glamours, warping.)
(Inferno, shadows, Hell.)
The Gargoyle approached him and he was, once again, frozen to the spot. A deer in the headlights. "Curiosity led you here. Creativity led to this realm's creation. And fear led to your demise." The Gargoyle said. It placed the nose back on Dante's face and he winced this time as it clicked and reconnected painfully. "Each of these things shall be your punishments. Keep providing us with the data we need and your life shall be spared."
"Until the day Hell reclaims your soul." The child joined in.
They cackled once more and, this time, the sound was completely off. Not the same as before. Mechanical, harsh, hurtful. He knew that voice. He checked the Gargoyle next and screamed at its suddenly human eyes. Suddenly recognisable and brown and disapproving.
Now, finally, he broke into a run.
As fast and as far as he ran, it didn't change the fact that he was in Hell. He couldn't log out. Still, his feet carried him as the fires died down, refusing to listen in his distress. His stomach was too cramped, begging for something to fill it. Starving himself of power, his flames of danger. He heard singing and continued to run. He heard a chorus of voices all clamouring for his attention, for his companionship, and broke free of all their tendrils grasping at his back.
He tripped down into one of the plateau's gaps and fell towards the frozen lake.
As he plummeted to his freedom, he closed his eyes and thought one desperate, commanding statement:
Wake up!
He gasped as his back hit the ice and his form shattered completely.
(All that was left was fire.)
(All that was left was fear.)
When he landed on his feet, he was no longer barefoot. No longer fire. He was almost seven once more, standing outside that cavern on that mountain path. Home again, home again. Was this Hell or reality? Was he awake or was he still dreaming?
His skin was too warm. Too restricting. Dante went to tear it off, to peel away the layers and release the fires pleading to get out, but was stopped by a startlingly solid, "Haven't you caused enough damage?"
When he looked up, his no longer empty stomach lurched. The world around him was full of demons, spectres, shadows, and ablaze with an unrelenting Inferno. The shadows stood amidst the thrumming flames, watching him with their blank white eyes.
No longer grinning. No longer laughing.
He wasn't the cause. He hadn't done this. He couldn't have.
"Don't lie to yourself, Dante." They reprimanded him with their many silent, booming voices.
He ran from the sight, up the path and towards his home. When he burst inside, the White Rabbit was there. Waiting for him. "Will the Queen be returning to join us for supper? Or have you made him late again?"
Her eyes were red, too. Devious and uncaring. And her voice echoed, as if coming from everywhere all at once. Dante wanted to scream again, but only a billowing cloud of smoke escaped his mouth. At this, the White Rabbit clicked her teeth together at him in disapproval.
"No fires inside, deerling. Burning our equipment would mean instant liquidation."
His friends, the shadows rose up all around him. Each one uniquely maimed. Each one missing something necessary. They clawed at his body with their dripping, messy limbs and whispered it was his fault, his fault, his fault.
They were all he could hear.
No matter how much he tried to answer them, all that would come out of his mouth was that choking, suffocating smoke.
(Marked for Hell. Marked for Hell.)
His mind shouted at him over and over as the shadows tore into his flesh, pulling him apart chunk by bloody chunk, searching for his heart.
Then all he could hear was singing, urging his head to pop and more smoke to spew from the flames.
