California school children possibly targeted by shooter due to 'Christian links'
A California school may have been targeted by a shooter because of its affiliation with the Seventh-Day Adventist church, police say. New details are emerging after the gunman opened fire on elementary school children at the Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, Butte County on Wednesday afternoon. The shooter appeared on campus to talk to the principal about enrolling a student. Only…

i attended a memorial service for a distant relative a few months ago, held in the local megachruch, and ive been thinking about it regularly since then. while i knew that i found the place and the very idea of the church fascinating,* the main emotion ive felt on reflection has been disappointment, and i didnt know why. but i figured it out;
the building is massive, the services must be huge and grandiose, and yet the pastor spoke of God in the most boring, uninspired way, and the whole church is industrial mid century modern. it was all just so bland and dispassionate and uninspired (the empathy and love on display for the dead was very genuine, im referring to the Rest of it). the place clearly feeds from the faith of its patrons but seems uninterested in inspiring them in turn
no ounce of me is religious, but i know for a fact the very idea of God can be much more beautiful and imposing and comforting than that. theres way to much blood and paint in its history for that not to be true. you have a huge congregation and all this money and youre selling one of the most captivating stories in human history and this is its presentation? this is sufficient? not only to the pastor and the church staff but to the people attending worship? i knew itd be strange and modern and absurd in there but i guess i expected at minimum a slightly-charismatic pastor and accompanying staff. or at least one with a confident and well presented knowledge of the bible
i felt disappointed cause it was disappointing

ok i like that post and i wasnt going to put it into the tags, but Catholicism is Christianity. Separating Christianity that way bugs me personally bc the sentiment echoes anti-Catholic biases of the past. A more accurate term would be Protestant and Catholic.

Long video (about three hours), but this is an interesting outsider's look at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, aka the church denomination I grew up in.
I still frequent Adventist circles due to most of my family and friends coming from the same community, though my friends and I have a... complicated relationship with the church (degrees of complication vary from person to person). I still have memories of being told that someday the government will break into our home and kill my parents while I have to run to the mountains and hide, waiting for the world to end. A lot of my parents' friends still bemoan the need to get out of LA and move to the desert because the government is going to start hunting Christians for sport at some point. There was a general sense in my parents' church during 2020 of "We should wear masks and socially distance, but also this is the United Nation's latest step in taking over the world." (The church owns numerous hospitals and medical facilities here in California, by the way.)
Funnily enough, what happened in Waco, TX was never brought up in my time going through the Adventist school system (I got out in college; if I had stayed, I theoretically could have spent my whole life from school to work in the church in some capacity).
Fun fact, if you ever keep track of my OCs and they mention being Christian, it's most likely this type of Christian. How much that affects them depends on how much I want to address things in my writing.

Okay I think I’m back in a bit of Lane Kim era. I have not been here long and I’ve been given The Great Controversy another book, 1 magazine, 2 booklets, 16+ pamphlets, and a faith counselor.

Submission Form
I think most of y'all kinda know the drill here. Submit as many denominations as you want (INDIVIDUALLY), but don't spam the form.
This poll is for PROTESTANT denominations and sub-denominations. Do not submit catholicism, JWs, or Mormons. This poll can also include "non-denominational" organizations so long as they have multiple churches and a distinct interpretation of faith. For example, the IBLP and the New Independent Fundamentalist Baptists can be submitted.
You can also submit denominations just because they suck and you want to see them beaten into the ground.
Here's the link. I'll be taking Top 32 make it into the bracket. The submission form will remain open until I feel that response is sufficient (so probably like 2000 responses).

BE A TRUE WORSHIPER OF GOD (John 4:19-24) and FELLOWSHIP with Him through Jesus Christ & the Holy Spirit AT ALL TIMES (1 John 1:3).
‼️MOST IMPORTANT: To become a true worshiper & TO HAVE A BLESSED LIFE, you must STAY AWAY from sin, idol worships, 'man-made' religion, its leaders/their churches/temples/fellowships/worship places, denominations & all ungodly traditions (1 Tim 6:5 KJV, Col 2:8, Matt 15:3).
ONLY THEN GOD WILL FILL YOUR LIFE WITH EVERLASTING JOY, HOPE & PEACE (Isa 51:11, 2 Thess 2:16, Phil 4:7).
God bless you & your loved ones.

Rant incoming:
As we look forward to more assholery around trying to ignore the separation of church and state and do things like write laws mandating the Ten Commandments in the classroom, I am BEGGING reporters and concerned citizens to hard on this one based on how this isn’t just about Promoting Christianity but in fact legalizing the promotion of some Christian denominations over others (also probably just ignoring Judaism in general).
Why?
Fun fact: depending on what religious tradition you belong to, the exact order and contents of the Ten Commandments changes. Oh, there’s a lot of overlap but there are material differences.
If the second commandment is the ban on graven images, it’s not Catholic, Lutheran, or similar denominations. It could be Jewish, or Eastern Orthodox, or another denomination that’s still side eyeing the Catholics for saying religious figurative art is a-ok because icons are fun.
Obviously that mucks the numbering up onwards. All traditions agree it’s very important to have Ten though, so they get around this by changing exactly how many unique commandments are needed to say No Coveting (the house, wife, and the rest of your neighbor’s stuff … that’s either 10 or 9 and 10, depending).
So, to these crusading politicians I want them to be asked: which version are you promoting? Why? Can you explain why these other (prominent and mainstream) denominations didn’t get their version picked? Do you consider them to be lesser?
And if you are trying to sidestep this debate by going with the nondenominational on a technicality version where it doesn’t count if you don’t include the numbering or cite a source, fuck you. If you claim importance because of “Western Civilization” but refuse to tie it back to the actual traditions that explain where this text comes from, you are a coward who can’t handle a little theological scholarship. You want to sneak your religion in without engaging with it, because it shows the hollowness of your actions.
